How the Comparison Works

  • Fair, per-year normalization. Recalls and complaints are averaged per model year so a nameplate that's been around for decades isn't unfairly penalized against a newer rival.
  • Reliability Index. A recency-weighted 0–100 score from NHTSA recalls, complaints, and crash involvement — recent model years count for more.
  • Honest confidence. When a model is brand-new or thin on data, we say the result “leans” rather than declaring a hard winner.
