Deferred Failure Risk
Vehicle-specific risks from this model-year's complaint record, known defects, and service milestones
Owners of the 2023 GENESIS G80 report fuel system issues more than most other systems. Complaints concentrated in one area often signal a systemic weakness worth a targeted pre-purchase inspection.

My car was diagnosed with burnt wiring causing the Complete front wiring harness needing replaced. The Company Genesis don’t want to repair/fix the problem or the Warranty company. The Service Manager Mr. Daryl has said this is a manufacturing defect issue. They have repaired several on this particular vehicle and somebody should cover it. If anything happens to me, I am suing or my Family will. Burnt wiring can cause a fire.
Description of Incident: The car was sold with a passenger-front Dunlop tire that suffered a critical structural failure where the tread rubber completely wore away, leaving the internal metal cords and plies exposed (visual evidence attached). I was unknowingly operating the vehicle in this hazardous condition for 136 miles of highway and local driving until the defect was fully identified on February 14th. Component Availability: The tire was removed from the vehicle on February 14th by an independent service center during the emergency purchase of four new tires. While the physical tire was left for disposal at the service center, high-resolution photographs of the failure are available and attached to this report for inspection. Safety Risk: The vehicle was sold in an unsafe and illegal condition (IL Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/12-405). The exposed structural metal plies created an imminent risk of a high-speed blowout or catastrophic tread separation, endangering both the occupants of my vehicle and other motorists. Confirmation/Inspection: The problem was confirmed by a certified technician at an independent service center on February 14th, who identified the tire as unfit for service. The selling dealer (Jidd Motors) was notified of a defect on February 6th but refused to replace the tire. This incident has also been reported to the Illinois Attorney General and the Illinois Secretary of State Police (Dealer Operations). Warning Symptoms: There were no warning lamps, TPMS messages, or symptoms prior to the physical discovery of the exposed metal. The tire maintained air pressure despite the severe structural compromise.
The contact owns a 2023 Genesis G80. The contact stated that after fueling the vehicle with gasoline, there was a strong fuel odor inside the vehicle. The failure persisted, and the contact stated that the check engine warning light became illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the contact was informed that the failure was caused by the gas cap not being properly secured and closed tightly. The contact was also informed that the fuel tank might be overfilled, causing gas to splash down to the vapor lock, and the contact disputed the claim. Despite the dealer's diagnosis, the contact stated that the failure remained and that the fuel odor was smelled hours after fueling the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 41,700.
The contact owned a 2023 Genesis G80. The contact stated that a 2001 Ford F-350, pulling a tow trailer, ran a red light while traveling at approximately 50 MPH and crashed into her vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. The contact sustained injuries to her left side, arm, neck, and back, and medical attention was provided. A police report was filed. There was no reported fire. The vehicle was towed to an auto recovery site. The contact called an unknown local dealer who referred her to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was contacted, and they opened a claim. The failure mileage was 22,750. The vehicle was deemed a total loss.

The contact owns a 2023 Genesis G80. The contact stated that after a routine maintenance, the “Service Required” warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the local dealer who was unable to reset the warning light. The vehicle was diagnosed that the computer in the back of the radio needed to be replaced. The part was ordered but was defective. While driving the Navigation system, door locks, and radio became inoperable. The vehicle was taken back to the local dealer where the part was replaced. While driving, the battery discharged message was displayed. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer provided a loaner vehicle. My TWO WEEK OLD 2023 Genesis G80, which has less than 1000 miles on it, lost all motive power (i.e. power to the engine) after driving for approximately four hours. We were sitting in stop-and-go-traffic on the George Washington Bridge in New York, with the engine off (because of the vehicle's auto-off function). When the car ahead of us moved, I lifted my foot off the brake pedal, pressed the gas, and the engine immediately failed to respond, sputtered, and stopped. After about a minute, we were able to restart the engine and continue driving. We drove for another approximately 1.5 hours, including a short rest stop. Then, while traveling at highway speed of ~75 MPH in the left passing lane of Interstate 84, the engine again lost all motive power. When the accelerator was depressed, there was no response. I was able to (narrowly) safely maneuver (drift) my car into the breakdown lane, and when the car finally stopped, the engine stopped entirely (it had been sputtering while coasting). After a few minutes, I was again able to get the car re-started, and we were able to drive another five minutes, before the car again lost all power, forcing us to drift off the interstate into the breakdown lane, near the beginning of an off ramp. I saw that there was a Hyundai dealer approximately a mile off the ramp, and so tried to reach the dealership. The car lost all engine power multiple time, just trying to reach that dealership. In the parking lot, we were unable to even start the engine any time in the next three hours. Most concerning, after having the car towed to a Genesis dealer, the dealership reports that the car showed NO FAULTS OR ERRORS, and they are completely in the dark as to why the car lost all power, both while stopped, and at highway speeds, and failed over and over. The lack of any reported faults or errors is both baffling and extremely worrisome. The dealer "hopes" but is unsure, that replacing the GDI fuel pump will resolve the issue.
Component Failure Cascade Risk
Known patterns where one defect leads to more severe downstream failures
▸ Engine stalling at speed — fuel delivery failure can cause sudden loss of power in traffic or on highways
Complaint & Reliability Timeline
Annual complaints (blue) vs. composite reliability score (amber) — recall years marked in red
The blue line shows 9 NHTSA complaints on file for the GENESIS G80 — a relatively low volume that spans from 2023 to 2026.
The amber reliability line is declining — recent years score around 91/100, lower than earlier in the vehicle's life. This pattern indicates issues are accumulating over time rather than being resolved, which is a concern for used buyers.
The red dashed line marks recall issuance — the first recall came 3 years after owners began filing complaints, a lag that indicates the manufacturer was slow to formally acknowledge these problems.
Red dots on the amber line flag 2025, a year when complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
Legal & Regulatory Actions
Known class action lawsuits, settlements, and manufacturer extended warranty programs
5-Year Total Cost of Ownership
Estimated based on EPA fuel data, risk-adjusted maintenance, and depreciation
Estimated 5-year cost of ownership: $23,984 (~$400/mo). Repair risk buffer is standard due to vehicle risk profile. EV maintenance costs are lower (no oil changes, fewer brake replacements).
