Recent Owner Complaints
Direct reports filed with NHTSA by Genesis G80 owners — 2022–2026 model years.
This is a follow-up to complaint #11714226 regarding an ongoing safety defect. The defect has now resulted in a crash. The vehicle experiences repeated unintended braking at highway speeds (50–79 mph) without driver input and with no obstacles present. During multiple events, the steering becomes temporarily unresponsive or “locked,” preventing driver control. The vehicle has also exhibited unintended lane departures, erratic lane changes, and unexpected acceleration following braking. Warning indicators including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Automatic Emergency Braking, Driver Attention Warning, Lane Assist, and Master Warning have illuminated without cause. This vehicle has been presented three times for repair attempts specifically for these braking and steering systems and has been out of service over 30 cumulative days. The manufacturer was unable to duplicate or repair the defect and returned the vehicle unrepaired. On March 12, 2026, Genesis Corporate (Case Manager Terrence) stated they were coordinating with Genesis of Selma to schedule a fourth repair attempt. However, on March 26, 2026, Mike at Selma Genesis stated via text: “We as a dealer won’t be working on your car.” This directly contradicts Genesis Corporate and has prevented further repair attempts. On [XXX], while traveling approximately 55 mph, the vehicle experienced a sudden loss of steering control combined with unintended braking, causing it to leave the roadway and collide with pistachio trees. Law enforcement responded. I sustained back and neck pain and sought medical care. The defect remains unresolved and poses a serious risk of injury or death. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The car was purchased on [XXX]. On [XXX]—only six days after purchasing the car—it failed to accelerate through an intersection while turning left in front of oncoming cars. Less than a week later, on [XXX], the car again failed to accelerate as it slowed down entering a rotary on [XXX] . The same thing happened again on [XXX] as it was driven out of the Savannah Bend Marina, turning left onto [XXX] , and yet again on [XXX] while driving around a traffic circle on [XXX] . On [XXX], the car once again failed to accelerate when attempting to clear an intersection on [XXX] Pooler, a Savannah suburb. On [XXX], after starting the car in the garage, it obviously had a problem running while idling. Backing out of the carport and pulling out onto the street, it barely responded. Even after the accelerator was practically floored, the car would go only about 35 miles per hour. On [XXX], the car yet again delayed in accelerating while turning left onto [XXX] from [XXX] . As it turned left and the accelerator was pressed down, the car slowly inched forward for a few seconds before finally accelerating and clearing the intersection, barely averting a collision with oncoming traffic. The dealership has had multiple attempts to repair the defect, but it has been unable to locate or remedy the defect. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Description of Incident: The car was sold with a passenger-front Dunlop tire that suffered a critical structural failure where the tread rubber completely wore away, leaving the internal metal cords and plies exposed (visual evidence attached). I was unknowingly operating the vehicle in this hazardous condition for 136 miles of highway and local driving until the defect was fully identified on February 14th. Component Availability: The tire was removed from the vehicle on February 14th by an independent service center during the emergency purchase of four new tires. While the physical tire was left for disposal at the service center, high-resolution photographs of the failure are available and attached to this report for inspection. Safety Risk: The vehicle was sold in an unsafe and illegal condition (IL Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/12-405). The exposed structural metal plies created an imminent risk of a high-speed blowout or catastrophic tread separation, endangering both the occupants of my vehicle and other motorists. Confirmation/Inspection: The problem was confirmed by a certified technician at an independent service center on February 14th, who identified the tire as unfit for service. The selling dealer (Jidd Motors) was notified of a defect on February 6th but refused to replace the tire. This incident has also been reported to the Illinois Attorney General and the Illinois Secretary of State Police (Dealer Operations). Warning Symptoms: There were no warning lamps, TPMS messages, or symptoms prior to the physical discovery of the exposed metal. The tire maintained air pressure despite the severe structural compromise.
While driving at highway speeds (55–73 mph), the vehicle has repeatedly and unexpectedly applied the brakes on its own and on at least one occasion experienced a loss of power. These events occurred without any vehicles, pedestrians, or obstacles present, and without any driver input. Road and weather conditions did not warrant braking. On multiple occasions, the vehicle suddenly decelerated while adaptive cruise control was engaged, then immediately re-accelerated back to the set speed. This created a serious risk of being rear-ended or involved in a high-speed collision. On one occasion, the vehicle experienced a loss of power while driving at highway speed, requiring immediate driver intervention to avoid a dangerous situation. These incidents make the vehicle feel unpredictable and unsafe to operate as intended. I regularly transport family members, and these failures place my safety and the safety of others at significant risk of serious injury or death. The vehicle has been inspected by an authorized Genesis dealership on two separate occasions. Despite extended road testing, the dealership has stated they were unable to reproduce the issue and no permanent repair has been performed. The manufacturer has been notified, and the defect remains unresolved. No warning lights or messages were present prior to the incidents. The failures occur suddenly and without advance indication.
When turning on the car, the right side of the dashboard (digital panel) will not turn on, it will not display rpm, gas or speed. The turn signals are not making the click noise. The issue happens randomly and I haven’t been able to replicate it in the presence of the dealer. Once the dashboard is back on the service engine light will come on and a service code is noted on the diagnostic system. This has been ongoing since the car was brand new, the first instance at 1,200 miles
I am submitting this report to document a serious and dangerous safety defect involving my Genesis G70. Note - Your system pulls my VIN as a G80, I own a G70. On two separate occasions, the vehicle applied braking without driver input and abruptly veered to the left, despite there being no obstacles, vehicles, or road hazards present. During the first incident, the vehicle was operating in Comfort mode with Lane Assist enabled. During the second incident, the vehicle was operating in Sport mode with Lane Assist disabled. In both cases, the braking felt as though it was applied to the front-left wheel, causing an immediate and forceful deviation of the vehicle to the left. Both incidents occurred while the vehicle was traveling at speed and required immediate corrective action. I was forced to divert the vehicle onto the shoulder to avoid a potential collision. My family was present in the vehicle at the time. Had there been a vehicle in the adjacent left lane during either event, a collision would have been unavoidable. No warnings, alerts, or visual indicators were displayed prior to or during either incident EXCEPT late / after or during about Checking Lane Safety Warning There were no objects, lane intrusions, or traffic conditions that would justify autonomous braking or steering intervention. I am reporting this issue as a critical safety defect that poses a serious risk of collision, injury, or fatality. I am also reporting the issue to my authorized dealer, Global Auto Mall (Route 22, North Plainfield, NJ), for immediate inspection and diagnosis. I am aware of other similar reports involving this behavior and believe this issue warrants investigation. I am submitting this complaint to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to document the defect and to help prevent potential injury or loss of life.
The contact owns a 2023 Genesis G80. The contact stated that after fueling the vehicle with gasoline, there was a strong fuel odor inside the vehicle. The failure persisted, and the contact stated that the check engine warning light became illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the contact was informed that the failure was caused by the gas cap not being properly secured and closed tightly. The contact was also informed that the fuel tank might be overfilled, causing gas to splash down to the vapor lock, and the contact disputed the claim. Despite the dealer's diagnosis, the contact stated that the failure remained and that the fuel odor was smelled hours after fueling the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 41,700.
Car less than 1 month old with approx 500 miles caught fire from the engine and was totaled. Nearly took the driver and house with it.
On Oct 14, 2025 I was traveling on route 287 north in cruise control set at 67 mph. Suddenly the dashboard screen went black and the car floored itself. The gas pedal went to the floor. It took a few seconds to realize what was going on. When the dashboard lit back up I was going over 100 mph. I quickly applied the brakes which disengaged it. It never happened again. The car is currently at the dealership but they could not reproduce the problem. They said it did not throw a code either. I felt it was important to report this so I am.
Driver attention warning "consider taking a break" too sensitive, too frequent and too random, happens every 7-15 minutes with loud beeps. Very annoying and distracting, and the feature cannot be turned off.
The contact owned a 2023 Genesis G80. The contact stated that a 2001 Ford F-350, pulling a tow trailer, ran a red light while traveling at approximately 50 MPH and crashed into her vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. The contact sustained injuries to her left side, arm, neck, and back, and medical attention was provided. A police report was filed. There was no reported fire. The vehicle was towed to an auto recovery site. The contact called an unknown local dealer who referred her to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was contacted, and they opened a claim. The failure mileage was 22,750. The vehicle was deemed a total loss.
Any time I step on the gas to accelerate from the current speed to by pass a car (by changing lanes), the transmission down shift to third gear and does not Up-shift causing the car to reach the top speed of the 3rd gear which is slower then the speed before the shifting occured. This episode causes the car behind me to have a knee jerk reaction and could result in rear ending me or trying to avoid an impact with me by abruptly changing lanes and possibly hitting incoming cars............. the first time it happened to me I only got the finger which I gladly accepted considering the alternative... I do hope that this is an isolated incident but I wanted to report it to ahve it on record in case it happens to other drivers.
