Deferred Failure Risk
Components and defects approaching or past their known service milestones
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.

My oil light kept flashing on while driving until I come to complete stop. Had to take it to Genesis dealership in [XXX] Ms. They did a check on my vehicle and found the problem. I had to pay to replace these issues the sender assy-oil pressure & the harness-op sensor. The total bill was $1,012.14. Oil tank sensor
Oil pressure light started to come on at idle, goes away while driving.. heard this has been and issue and even the dealership knows about it.. there is also a recall in Korea for the same exact thing for the same exact cars but no recall in the usa..please make this a recall it is not safe nor should this be over looked
While driving the engine simply stops and won't restart. When this happens, the key fob won't lock the car or unlock the trunk. The trunk opening button won't open the trunk. It just flashes the parking light and gives a sound.
At 63,230 miles the engine oil pressure light would illuminate on my 2017 Genesis G80. I took it to the dealer and the technician found the oil pressure switch on my car went bad and in the words of the mechanic was leaking internally. This is a known issue by Genesis/Hyundai as they are performing repairs in Korea (where this vehicle is built and assembled) for this very problem. But in America they are refusing to honor the warranty which under powertrain is valid for 10 years/100,000 miles. Proper function of the engine is clearly a part of the powertrain. The warranty further goes on to state that under engine, "gaskets and seals" are covered. The repairs I had to have performed at great expense for a failed oil pressure switch seemed clear to me under the warranty. Not only a known issue and covered where the car is made, but they seem to know they have a huge issue based on Genesis Forums and their complaints the numbers are large; they don't want to have to make it right for the owners.
The cars engine shut down while driving. Once we got it stopped we put it in park and the car started and we drove it 30 minutes home.
Subject: Safety Concern Regarding 2017 Genesis G80 Dear NHTSA, I am writing to report an ongoing issue with my 2017 Genesis G80. While driving, I have experienced a significant safety concern related to the vehicle's acceleration. Specifically, when accelerating at various speeds, the vehicle begins to jerk abruptly and violently, causing a potentially dangerous situation on the road. After seeking advice, I was informed that the problem might be related to the engine malfunctioning or failing. I am deeply concerned about the safety risks this poses, both for myself and others on the road. I would greatly appreciate any guidance or investigation into this matter to ensure the issue is addressed promptly. Thank you for your attention to this serious safety concern. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The hyundai genesis and the genesis G80 have an oil pressure sensor defect. Practically, everyone i know with a genesis, in particular the 3.8 L engine, has this issue. The oil pressure sensor illuminates even though the engine oil level is fine and this issue can occur at any time regardless of mileage. I'd be surprised if this issue has not been reported to you all.

I want to file a complaint regarding the recall issued for my car. I am concerned that Genesis has not issued a resolution at all and suggests parking the car. If it's unsafe and could ignite itself on fire, a remedy should be issued immediately. Offer us a different model and year or fix the issue. This is people's lives at stake.

Recall 24V107000 issued 2-13-2024 for compartment fire while parked or driving. I received such recall from Genesis within the past two weeks, now 5-13-2024, not promptly as it should have been since it is a high rise of danger to users and passengers. Today I called the Genesis Customer care, there remains no remedy, and the agent could not authorize a rental car. I could rent a car at my expense and submit a claim once the remedy is installed and I may be refunded that cost. Another agent should be contacting me in 3 to 5 days referring to case number 23267478. First, the notice was untimely. Second, no offer of sidelining the car and providing free of all charges, a rental car. Seems to me that our lives are at risk with no immediate help from Genesis. Thank You.
I was made aware that my car has a recall. I took it to the dealership (World Car Kia Hyundai North, San Antonio, TX) to get fixed and they told me that there is no remedy for it. I stressed to them that I was worried about my car and that I have a child that is always in the car with me. They told me to keep looking on google and that google would tell me when there is a fix. I would like a different car or my money back but it seems like they will not do that for me.
Oil sensor oil sensor in 2017 Genesis goes bad & Genesis knows it. When the vehicle is at a complete stop or is slowing down, oil pressure sensor comes on. Whenever you begin to accelerate, it goes off. Genesis ALREADY KNOWS this…which is why they ALREADY issued a recall on “DH” body style models (like my 2017 Genesis G80) in Korea, where the cars are produced, but REFUSES TO ISSUE A RECALL IN THE US MARKET. Upon googling I see that this is a common problem that an insane amount of people have also experience, again, enough of a problem to cause the Korean market, where these are manufactured to issue a recall. It’s not covered under warranty & the sensor is located so deep in the engine behind the manifold, it typically is a $800–1250 repair for a sensor that cost less than $200 due to the labor involved to repair it, however some local Genesis dealership quoted as much as $1600 to get it, replaced due to how much they charge per hour of labor. The quote from my local dealership in Houston Texas was $1250. This doesnt seem to be a problem w/ the new body style Genesis vehicles but is for mine the 2017 Genesis G80 (this body style is known as“BH” & was called the “Hyundai Genesis” in its 2015 & 2016 models, the 2017 model was 1st year as “Genesis G80” when Genesis broke off Hyundai to be separate but its the same body besides the badge which makes sense why the problem continued into the 2017 & 2018 Genesis G80) Not only should this not be such a common issue where you have so many people talking about how it happened to their car (& who knows how many people this happened to who didn’t post anything online) but Genesis owners in the US shouldn’t be on the hook to pay upwards of $1600 for an issue Genesis ALREADY KNOWS exists…which is why they ALREADY issued a recall on “DH” body style models (like my 2017 Genesis G80) in Korea, where the cars produced, but REFUSES TO ISSUE A RECALL IN US MARKET..clearly they know or wouldn't have issued recall in the Korean market
The contact owns a 2017 Genesis G80. The contact stated that the vehicle shutoff while driving in the rain. There was an unknown warning light illuminated. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V107000 (Electrical System). The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 78,000.
1.What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? -> While I was driving on the highway, All Dashboard was blacked out and can't driving at all
Oil light comes on intermittently due to faulty sensor. Apparently this is a recurring issue for this model.
The contact owns a 2017 Genesis G80. The contact stated that upon attempting to enter the vehicle, he became aware that the driver's side rear passenger door failed to unlatch. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the door latch. The contact was informed that the door had to be forced opened to complete the repair. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 51,000. The VIN was not available.
On May 9, 2023 @ 3pm. We were traveling at @60 mph when another vehicle pulled out in front of us. I hit brakes and swerved to miss the vehicle (which I did miss). I slid @ 350 feet, hit two divided highway medians/curbs and hit a concreted double legged (with at least 4 crossbars) stop sign with large solar panel and flashing lights. The front driver side of was crushed, the windshield and sunroof shattered as the solar panel and lights of the sign hit the car. The car was towed by the insurance company (Geico) and is awaiting their inspection. There was a police report/crash report created (Arkansas [XXX]) There were no warning lights or other indication of problems on the dashboard prior to the accident. The front passenger hit head on front and middle side beam and door glass. Has concussion. No airbags deployed and I don't think the automatic braking ever alerted or engaged. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
oil Pressure sending unit I tried to get it fixed at a local shop but they refused because it was too tough a job for their skill level, I was confused about s until I saw a video showing the sensor being under the manifold and between cylinders and someone had broken their timing cover while replacing. Driving with the faulty sensor could lead to not knowing if an oil pump has failed causing engine failure upon driving. problem has been confirmed have not taken to dealer for inspection, mostly because I have not had the money to pay for the job started around 68k miles, oil light went on.
I am the original owner and when my vehicle reached approximately 65,000 miles just past the warranty the oil service light would come on sometimes then go out. i have had documented oil changes from my dealer approximately every 3500 miles. Everything seems to be normal in the car and the oil level checked on a regular basis is always ok. When the RPM rises above 2000 rpm the oil service light goes out and returns when the rpm is lower. After visiting a Genesis vehicle Forum web site which i subscribe to i discovered that it's a common problem many vehicles owners of the Genesis model particularly the G80. I am told that the remedy is costly due the need to remove the entire vehicle's intake manifold to get to the device and replace it which is causing the problem. This appears to be a factory device part failure as was explained to me and it may or may not fail within or after the warranty expires. Also whenever it rains my ABS warning light comes stating that the system is inoperable. Never comes on in dry weather.
Intermittent low oil pressure light (at low RPM) TSB issued for Korean customers, not for US Customers.
Approximately May or June of 2022 I noticed my 2017 Genesis g80 began intermittently hesitating and hard shifting when I was driving so being that I hadn't had it even a year I contacted the dealer and Genesis. I was told the warranty was up with Genesis and advised to contact the extended warranty by Carvana (the dealer). I did, but when they didn't have any shops in network who felt comfortable working on my vehicle and a recall came up with the vehicle I contacted Genesis again and was sent to an authorized dealer who fixed the recall and also agreed to check my transmission fluid to make sure it wasn't the issue causing the hard shifting. Now, the problem is back and on Genesis owner forum it shows it's actually a known problem that they issued a TSB about as of September 2021 and my vehicle falls in the effected vehicles, but I wasn't made aware of this and they only want to honor repair if vehicle is still under warranty not as a recall which is insane since it's a safety hazard. The hesitation can make someone run into the back of you or your car hesitate to accelerate and they've since upgraded to using a different type in their cars due to the issue. So, if they are going to allow them to be sold and resold either Genesis or the dealers need to be responsible for making sure they are safe and the defective parts are repaired before selling the car.
THE DOORS ON THE VEHICLE EITHER REAR OR OTHER WILL NOT OPEN FROM OUTSIDE OR INSIDE AND PERSON CAN GET TRAPPED IN THE SEAT. PROBLEM HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED BY DEALER AND MANUFACTURER HYUNDAI. HYUNDAI HAS EXTENED RECALL WARRANTY BUT NOT FOR THERE SISTER COMPANY GENESIS WHO HAS SAME PROBLEM. INSPECTED BY DEALERSHIP AND CASE NUMBER PROVIDED BY GENESIS # 20424715 NO WARNINGS GIVEN AND HENCE NO ABILITY TO PREVENT THERE ARE NUMEROUS CARS WITH SAME DEFECT
The contact owns a 2017 Genesis G80. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65-70 MPH, the moon roof was closed and shattered. There was no impact to the moon roof to cause the failure. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the moon roof needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 38,000.
My trunk iced over and I accidentally hit the key fob to release the trunk. Next time I go to access the trunk, to my surprise, it does not open. I tried the key release, dash release, manual key unlock, and interior emergency trunk release - none worked. There was no way the to access the trunk. I had to wait a few weeks to take it to the dealer and I’m now sitting here waiting for the resolution. Either way, there is no time or circumstance I should not be able to access the trunk automated or manual; however, that is the design flaw case with this model Genesis.
Both passenger side tires had to be replaced. The car has less than 9,000 miles. Front tire had a sidewall bubble. Rear tire had a sidewall tear with metal showing. Service men detected tire defect during routine oil chage. I do not recall any incidents that would have caused these defects. I'm a 66 year old woman and don't drive carelessly. These tires were damaged too easily and with too few miles on them. Can I apply for any replacement costs? P275/35/ZR19 and P275/40/ZR19 The vehicle was damaged and repaired on 10/8/2020. There was no tire damage at that ime.
When steering car to left 2 or 3 times some days it sticks and I have to yank it back. Obvious safety hazard and I see where other owners on car blogs/sites have experienced the same dangerous situation. Sounds like on chat rooms dealers and mfg. acting like they've never heard of such a thing. Time for a recall? I'm taking to dealer this coming Wednesday. They have a bulletin out I just saw on your website number 20-st-004hg which may be the fix. Isn't this a possible life threatening situation?Shouldn't this be a recall?
I have a Genesis G-80 2017 There was a recall earlier this year and I took my car in for that repair about a month ago. As of 7/12/21, my car feels hot from the floor up. My air conditioner works fine When I park my car in the garage and close the door, it is so hot until I will leave the gavrage door open. The recall was for the ABS system to hae a fuse system replaced that could affect more than breaks (this is what I was told). Specifically, the car was at risk for catching on fire because of this fuse. My ABS caution light is on along with other warnings and because of the recall, I am having difficulty getting my car serviced. I called Genesis Corporate and he told me not to park the car in the garage and he asked if I needed numbers to other dealerships for repair. My concern is why sale something that you are not equipped to repair? I want it documented that this car was supposedly repaired, but clearly there is something else going on I am not sure what your agency's role is with recall, but this is a government agency so I am assuming that you guys have some checks and balances in place for safety. There is something else going on with these vehicles When my car catches on fire with me in it or while parked in the garage at the hospital where I work, I wan you to know. Thank You
Hyundai Motor America and Genesis Motor America are recalling my 2017 Genesis G80 vehicle to address a risk with anti-lock break system (ABS) modules because it could malfunction internally and case an electrical short over time potentially resulting in engine compartment fire. I contacted the dealership and they claim that do not have the required part to resolve the issue. Also they do not have an estimated delivery date for the part. Please advise.

REGARDING NHTSA RECALL REPORT #21V-160 THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME CONFUSING INFORMATION REGARDING ACTION TO BE TAKEN BY THE VEHICLE OWNER. IN THE SECTION DESCRIPTION OF THE SAFETY RISK IT SAYS THAT THERE IS A RISK OF A FIRE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS "PARKED OR DRIVING". IN THE SECTION DESCRIPTION OF REMEDY IT STATES "CUSTOMERS CAN CONTINUE DRIVING THESE VEHICLES". IT SEEMS BASED ON THESE TWO STATEMENTS YOU'RE TAKING A CHANCE OF A VEHICLE FIRE IF YOU CONTINUE TO DRIVE. THE FIRST STATEMENT SAYS THE PROBLEM CAN OCCUR WHILE DRIVING AND THE SECOND SAYS YOU CAN STILL DRIVE THE VEHICLE. BASED ON INFORMATION FROM OTHER SOURCES QUOTING GENESIS THE INSTALLATION OF A PARTICULAR FUSE, LOCATED IN THE ABS MODULE WILL PREVENT THE CHANCE OF A FIRE. I'M ASSUMING THIS IS A TEMPORARY FIX SINCE GENESIS IS STILL TRYING TO LOCATE THE EXACT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. CAN YOU ELABORATE ON EXACTLY WHAT FUSE SHOULD BE REPLACED. MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND GENESIS NATIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT THIS FUSE STOP-GAP MEASURE AND ARE REFUSING TO LOOK FURTHER INTO THE MATTER. AT THIS POINT, BASED ON THE INFORMATION IN THE NHTSA REPORT I AM AFRAID TO USE MY CAR. CAN YOU PLEASE CLARIFY WHETHER OR NOT I CAN SAFELY OPERATE MY VEHICLE? CURRENTLY IT IS SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY AS I DON'T WANT TO TAKE A CHANCE TRANSPORTING MYSELF OR FAMILY. THANK YOU.

G80 WAS IN THE LEFT LANE ATTEMPTING TO PASS A VEHICLE ON THE RIGHT. THERE WAS A VEHICLE AHEAD OF THE G80. DRIVER NOTICED ANOTHER VEHICLE COMING UP FAST FROM BEHIND UNTIL IT WAS VERY CLOSE TO THE REAR OF THE G80. WHEN DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE AWAY FROM TAILGATING CAR, ENGINE REVVED, AND DID NOT ENGAGE. IT APPEARED DISCONNECTED FROM TRANSMISSION AS IF IN NEUTRAL. TACHOMETER NEEDLE SWUNG WILDLY. VEHICLE SLOWED SINCE IT WAS NOT ENGAGED, CREATING MORE RISK FROM TAILGATER. THE TACHOMETER BEHAVIOR AND GEAR NEUTRALITY PERSISTED FOR APPROXIMATELY FIVE SECONDS AND THEN ENGINE ENGAGED. TOOK CAR TO DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO REPLICATE BEHAVIOR OR DETECT SYSTEM ERRORS AFTER THREE DAYS OF WORK. DEALER REPORTED THAT MANUFACTURER'S ENGINEERS WERE UNABLE TO RECOMMEND ANYTHING. NO REPAIRS MADE.

THE CAR RANDOMLY DOES NOT TURN ON WHEN I PRESS THE START BUTTON. NOTHING HAPPENS. IT'S NOT THE KEY FOB EITHER BECAUSE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WORKS IN THE CAR AT THAT POINT. I CAN'T OPEN THE TRUNK USING THE BUTTON INSIDE THE CAR, LOCK OR UNLOCK THE DOORS, NOTHING. THE CAR IS ESSENTIALLY A USELESS HUNK OF METAL. AFTER ABOUT 15-20 MINUTES THOUGH, THE CAR WILL JUST RANDOMLY TURN ON. I DON'T PRESS THE START BUTTON - IT'LL JUST TURN ON. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS SO FAR.
WHILE DRIVING ON AN INCLINE TOWARD A STOP SIGN, THE VEHICLE TURNED OFF. WHILE MOVING FORWARD AS CARS PULLED OUT OF THE STOP SIGN THE CAR LURCHED (SIMILAR TO IF YOU WERE HIT FROM BEHIND) AND ALL SCREENS WENT DARK AND ALL ELECTRONICS WENT OFF. EVERYTHING CAME BACK ON WITHIN 1-2 SECONDS AND THE CAR PROCEEDED AS NORMAL.
TERRIBLE BLIND SPOT RESULTING FROM SIDE MIRRORS AND ROOF PILLARS WHEN TURNING RIGHT OR LEFT. WORSE ON RIGHT TURNS. CAN'T SEE PEDESTRIANS. THE MIRROR AND ROOF PILLAR CREATES A 24 INCH WIDE BLIND SPOT. MAKING IT WORSE IS THE FACT THAT THE POWER SEAT DOESN'T GO HIGH ENOUGH FOR ME TO SEE OVER MIRRORS( I AM 5'8"). NO ACCIDENT, ONLY CLOSE CALLS AND SURPRISES.

BOUGHT CAR AS NEW MAY 2018. 1 BLOW OUT AND 4 WOUOD BE BLIWOUTS IF I DIDNT SEE BUBBLE IN TIRES PROBLEMS ARE WITH THE FRONT TIRES 33 PSI IS INCORRECT ON ROAD BALANCE MACHINE I PROVED TIRES ARE UNDER INFLATED. I MADE HYUNDAI AWARE I OWN THE CAR 10 WEEKS IT SAT AT 2 DEALERSHIPS A TOTAL OF 3 WEEKS BETWEEN ORDERING TIRES AND FIGHTING OVER WHO'S PAYING FOR IT. I ASKED MANY TIMES FOR A REGIONAL MGR TO LOOK AT THIS CAR. THEY ARE TOTALLY NEGLIGENT. NOBODY LOOKED AT AND NOBODY DROVE. WHAT THEY SAY IS TIRE MFG SAYS THAT 33 PSI IS BEST PERFORMANCE AND BEST GAS MILAGE. ITS GONNA TAKE A FATALITY FOR SOMEONE TO GET INVOLVED AND CHECK THESE CARS OUT AND I GET THE FACT THAT THERE LOW PROFILE TIRES WHICH MEANS NOTHING. I HAD A 2013 CADILLAC XTS FOR 30 MONTHS AND PUT 65K MILES ON THE CAR WITH NO PROBLEMS. I WAS A. ADDILAC CUSTOMER FOR 20 YEARS AND USED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE ONCE. I HAVE THIS CAR 10 WEEKS USED ROADSIDE 3 TIMES. BOTTOM LINE ITS UNSAFE. FOR SURE THE TIRES ARE UNDER INFLATED ITS A FRONT HEAVY CAR AND PROBABLY THEY SHOULD BE USING A DIFFERENT TIRE IF ANYONE GETS INJURED OR WORSE I SENT HYUANDI PLENTY OF EMAILS AND RECORDED PHONE CONVERSATIONS THERE BEYOND NEGLIGENT TO NOT LOOK AT THIS CAR. AND THEY PROMISE A GENESIS SERVICE LOANER WHEN THE CAR IS IN THE SHOP. NONE OF THESE DEALERSHIPS HAVE THEM. THE GENESIS EXPERIENCE IS THE GENESIS INCONVENIENCE. I HAVE BIG TIME BUYERS REMORSE.
