Deferred Failure Risk

Vehicle-specific risks from this model-year's complaint record, known defects, and service milestones

38/100
Monitor Deferred Risk
The engine/powertrain system is the most-reported problem for the 2019 FORD F-150 — 46 NHTSA complaints (88% of all filings). Prioritize it in a pre-purchase inspection.
⚠No odometer data on record. Items marked VERIFY below are age-based maintenance reminders — general guidance, not confirmed findings for this specific vehicle. Confirm actual mileage and service history with the seller.
CASCADECriticalFailure Cascade
Cascade already triggered — downstream damage likely in progress
Have a specialist inspect all systems connected to the failed component before purchase
One failed component has created stress on connected systems. Repair costs compound quickly — a $500 fix can become $3,000+ if cascade damage is ignored.
COMMONLY REPORTEDCriticalEngine/Powertrain
46 owner complaints · 88% of all filings
Inspect the engine/powertrain system before purchase — the most-reported problem for the 2019 FORD F-150
Owners of the 2019 FORD F-150 report engine/powertrain issues more than most other systems. Complaints concentrated in one area often signal a systemic weakness worth a targeted pre-purchase inspection.
VERIFYCriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Typical interval: 120,000 mi / 10 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify timing chain tensioner service history with the seller
✓ Timing type per published engine specification
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
VERIFYCriticalWater Pump
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 8 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify water pump service history with the seller
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
VERIFYHighTransmission Fluid / Service
Typical interval: 60,000 mi / 5 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify transmission fluid / service service history with the seller
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
VERIFYHighCoolant Flush
Manufacturer interval: 105,000 mi / 6 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify coolant flush service history with the seller
✓ per Ford owner's manual maintenance schedule
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
VERIFYModerateSpark Plugs (iridium/platinum)
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 8 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify spark plugs (iridium/platinum) service history with the seller
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
VERIFYModerateFuel Injectors
Typical interval: 120,000 mi / 10 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify fuel injectors service history with the seller
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.

While driving on a residential road, my 2019 Ford F-150 (10R80 10-speed automatic with 88k miles) lost power to the wheels – the engine revved but the truck would not move. It did not recover after I shifted to reverse, then park, then shut the engine off and restarted. The vehicle had to be towed. This followed an earlier event on or around July 7, 2026 (at ~86,500 miles) where the transmission failed to downshift from 4th gear at a stop and stalled the engine, recovering only after cycling the shifter. The truck has a history of hard shifting into and past 4th gear for over a year now. No warning lights appeared during these events. The safety risk is that the transmission intermittently loses drive engagement and can stall the vehicle in traffic. When the engine stalls, power brake assist is lost after one or two pedal applications. Had the loss of drive occurred in an intersection or on the highway rather than a low-speed residential road, it could have caused a collision. An authorized Ford dealer has twice been unable to duplicate the fault on test drives, consistent with the intermittent 10R80 CDF clutch cylinder hydraulic leak described in Ford TSB 25-2126. The dealer’s technician suspects an F-clutch concern.

ODI #11767050POWER TRAIN

ODI #11766537POWER TRAIN

The truck has 55,000 miles on it. The truck shifted very harshly when slowing down creating a traction hazard. The harsh shifting cannot be mitigated by adjusting how it is driven. After a few days a wrench symbol appeared on the dash screen while driving on the interstate, I immediately drove the truck to the Ford dealership after the wrench symbol appeared. Code P07F7 was recovered. I was told that the torque converter is bad and the CDF hub is failing. I was told that the transmission will have to be replaced or rebuilt. The Ford dealerships own transmission specialist showed me how the faulty design is the cause for the break and showed me the new design Ford uses for the replacement parts.

The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the vehicle was difficult to shift into gear. The transmission was a hard shifting and vibrating. While driving 35-45 MPH, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where the transmission was flushed and fluids were replaced. After 3 days, the failure reoccurred. The Ford customer service was contacted. The dealer informed the contact that there were no recalls associated with the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 151,000.

Can phasers failed. Ford will not accept any responsibility for a known dangerous issue.Ford refuses to help even though they knew about this issue. They did not issue a recall, instead offering a Customer Satisfaction Program so they could dodge responsibility for future repairs. This is a dangerous defect as it can cause an engine to seize up on the highway. I’m stuck with a repair bill in the thousands of dollars and Ford will not even assist with the cost.

ODI #11765619POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

I am writing to formally escalate my ongoing complaint regarding my Ford truck and the repeated problems I have experienced with it over the years. At this point, this is no longer simply a matter of dissatisfaction with a dealership repair. I am asking Ford Motor Company at the corporate level to take responsibility for reviewing the complete history of this vehicle and the repeated unsuccessful attempts to correct the problems I have experienced. Most recently, my truck was brought to **Salem NH Ford on August 25, 2026, because of the ongoing powertrain malfunction and sudden loss-of-power problem**. This was the **fifth time** I have brought the truck in for this same ongoing powertrain problem. The dealership kept my truck for **ten full days**, from August 25 through September 4, 2026. During that time, Ford provided me with a loaner vehicle. I was eventually contacted by the dealership and told that my truck was ready to be picked up. I was also told that they believed they had fixed the powertrain problem. Unfortunately, that was not the case. ### THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION RETURNED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY After picking up my truck on **September 4, 2026**, I began driving it again. Then, on **September 7, 2026 — only three days after picking it up from Ford — the powertrain malfunction happened again**. This was extremely upsetting and frustrating. Ford had my truck for ten days. This was already the **fifth service visit for the same ongoing powertrain problem

ODI #11765705POWER TRAIN

2019 f150 with 115,600 miles equipped with 10r80 transmission recently experienced a 10th gear shift down to 1st gear while doing 65mph down a bridge almost causing a really bad accident. Since then truck has randomly and sporadically shifted out of higher gears into lower gears I cannot afford to repair a factory defect.

ODI #11764640SERVICE BRAKES

The brake master cylinder on my 2019 F150 had a seal leak which caused all brake fluid loss while towing with my family. Luckily we were able to stop safely, not only for us but others nearby. I know this is a recall that affects vehicles in other years but mine was not included and I feel like it should be because we had total brake failure. This is already documented by Ford recall number 25S37 (which aligns with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's number 25V-236). I feel like Ford needs to expand the recall to other years as it seems the defective part is more widespread to the ones they recalled. I had a Ford dealer replace the master cylinder and brake booster which is Ford's recommendation based on the rear seal leak of the master cylinder. A low brake fluid warning was all that appeared and by the time I was going to safely stop to check fluid level, there was no braking pressure.

ODI #11764811ENGINE

The valve cover on my 2019 Ford F-150 equipped with the 5.0L V8 engine has failed and is leaking engine oil directly onto the exhaust. The vehicle was inspected by a professional technician, who confirmed that the valve cover itself is the source of the leak rather than simply the replaceable valve cover gasket. The technician also advised that the valve cover on the opposite side is showing signs that it may develop the same issue and recommended replacement of both valve covers. This creates a safety concern because engine oil is leaking directly onto hot exhaust components. I am concerned that continued oil leakage onto the exhaust could result in smoke or an underhood fire. At this time, I am not aware of an actual fire occurring. The failure and location of the oil leak were confirmed by a professional service technician. The vehicle/component has not, to my knowledge, been inspected by Ford specifically for this issue. I am not aware of any warning lamp or dashboard message that appeared before the leak was discovered. The affected valve covers are composite/plastic components. Replacement of the complete valve cover has been recommended because the technician determined that the cover itself, rather than only the gasket, is causing the leak. The failed component can be retained and made available for inspection upon request after replacement. I am submitting this complaint because failure of the valve cover is allowing engine oil to leak directly onto the vehicle's hot exhaust components, creating a potential fire hazard.

ODI #11763574POWER TRAIN

I had my Transmission serviced at my local Ford dealership. After the service I was told the vehicle may shift "weird" for a while as the computer learns my driving. During this time unbeknown to me the service caused my CDF drum to fail. In the time after the service the vehicle shifted hard, which I though it was "learning" as they stated it would. As I was driving I came to a redlight. When the light turned green I started to make my right hand turn. The vehicle moved into the intersection and then shifted to neutral. During this time the lights indicating the gear started jumping around and finally the transmission went into third gear and started to move. By this time cars were waiting for me to get out of the intersection. I then decided I should not drive the vehicle anymore and get it back to the dealer. Before I reach my residence I have to cross a two lane highway. This crossing is at the bottom of steep decent through woods with lots of turns. There is a turn approximately 600 feet above the crossing. From the time you see a vehicle until it reaches the intersection is about 7 seconds. As I started out into this intersection the transmission went into neutral again and the vehicle came to a stop. Again the shift lights bounced between gears and finally settled in third gear and the vehicle started to move. I am not sure how long I was in the intersection but luckily there was no vehicles in sight. Had one been coming down the hill I probably would have been hit. I then took the vehicle back to the dealer and found out what was actually happening with the transmission. I also found out that these transmissions have a high failure rate for this same issue. Luckily I live in a rural area where there is not a lot of traffic. I feel this issue could be a safety concern and though I should bring it to the NTSBs attention.

Engine failure due to oil consumption. Low compression on bank 2. Changed coil packs, spark plugs and bank 2 Catalytic converter misfires stayed. Took to dealer for diagnostics and found low compression and recommended engine replacement. Now getting new truck because of expensive engine replacement causing me to roll the negative equity to my new truck.

ODI #11763427UNKNOWN OR OTHER

My 2019 Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost with the 10-speed 10R80 transmission has developed severe shifting and acceleration problems that create a safety risk. The transmission frequently appears to skip 2nd gear and bangs very hard into 3rd. This 1st-to-3rd harsh shift is persistent and does not go away after the truck warms up. I also experience delayed shifts including 3rd-4th, 6th-7th, 8th-9th and sometimes 9th-10th. Downshifts into 4th can also cause a hard bang. More concerning, the truck intermittently hesitates and loses forward momentum when accelerating. This happens with light, moderate or heavy throttle. It commonly occurs during the first 3-4 miles but can happen with a cold or warm start. It can also return after the truck has been driven, parked briefly, and restarted. This creates a serious crash risk when I pull onto a main road or merge onto a highway. After I commit to entering traffic, the truck can hesitate and lose momentum instead of accelerating. I must wait for an unusually large gap in traffic because I cannot predict whether the truck will accelerate normally. I regularly have my two young children in the vehicle and no longer feel safe driving it. There are no warning lights. An independent mechanic found the transmission fluid low and topped it off. The PCM/TCM programming was also updated. Neither corrected the problem. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by Ford for this condition and is available for inspection. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this as a potential safety defect because the unpredictable loss of acceleration while entering or merging with moving traffic creates a risk of collision. The hesitation can occur without warning after I have already entered moving traffic, leaving little opportunity to avoid an approaching vehicle. I believe the unpredictable loss of acceleration creates an immediate risk of a side-impact or rear-end collision.

We were about 75 miles from the destination when going down hill the transmission would not shift to the lower gear until we were going to fast and then it would down sift very hard. While going up a hill it would down shift ok but as we got up to speed the transmission would not shift up but stay in the lower gear. Finally at very high RPM it would shift up to the higher gear with a very loud clunk. As soon as we got to our destination we took it to a ford dealer and they said we were lucky because the transmission was on verge of failing completely. Ford has a 60k power train warranty and they said even though it was less than 60K miles my warranty ran out of time 6 weeks ago. If the transmission had failed completely, the car could have had a major safety issue with the trailer behind us. We were not pulling weight more than rated but going up the mountains and the down with only brakes would have been very dangerous. I read that many ford owners are having problems with their 10R80 ten speed transmission in the larger heavy vehicles such as Expedition or F150. Ford Authority reported expeditions pulling trailers have the 10R80 transmission failing after 30K miles.

I reported transmission issue to my dealer years ago. It started when I would start the truck in the morning and put it in reverse. It would do nothing than al of a sudden lunge in reverse. Than it would clear up and not do it for several months. I pretty much got the blow off from the dealer. Cold Oil, linkage sticking bs. Of course, now it’s out of warranty. The transmission shifts hard and even slips out of gear. It stalled tonight at a stop light because it banged into gear. I have less than a hundred thousand miles on this truck. It’s not even safe to drive down the road. You never know when it’s going to shift out of gear . Or lunge forward when it shifts into the next gear.

The transmission started to clunk into gear very heavily when I started my drive and then as I was driving down the highway going 60mph, the 10r80 transmission suddenly downshifted from 7th gear to 1st gear, and jolted the truck and I lost all power and it took around 5-7 seconds before the throttle was registering again to pick up speed. A car was a ways behind me but if it had been closer, there is no doubt I would have likely been hit. After this happened, in trying to increase speed back to the speed limit, the transmission would not shift back into 7th gear, and a wrench and code popped up on the dash.

Beginning approximately one year ago, my Ford F-150 has intermittently experienced a serious transmission problem during acceleration. The transmission appears to momentarily lose the connection between the engine and drivetrain. When this occurs, the truck hesitates or fails to deliver power when I press the accelerator, then suddenly and very harshly engages the next gear. The problem can occur when the vehicle is cold or fully warmed up. This creates a significant safety concern because the vehicle can unexpectedly fail to accelerate when needed, particularly when merging onto a highway, climbing a hill, or accelerating from a traffic light with other vehicles behind me. The sudden, harsh engagement that follows the hesitation is also unexpected and could affect the vehicle's stability or the driver's ability to control the vehicle. I contacted my Ford dealer on August 17, 2026, regarding the problem. The dealer indicated that they are familiar with this type of problem on this transmission and stated that their repair procedure is to replace the entire transmission rather than attempt to repair it. I was told the estimated cost would be approximately $10,000–$12,000. The truck currently has approximately 71,000 miles. Although it is no longer under warranty, I am concerned that a major transmission component is experiencing a potentially serious safety-related failure at this mileage. I believe Ford should investigate this issue and determine whether there is a defect or widespread failure affecting these transmissions. Given the nature of the problem and the potential safety consequences, I also believe Ford should provide financial assistance toward the repair, particularly if this is a known or recurring transmission problem.

CDF drum failure and torque converter failure. Started at 70,000 miles by shifting hard going into 8th gear. Now it has completely failed at 81,000 miles. It is a safety concern because now the vehicle goes straight to 4th gear when you shift out the park. Fourth gear is too steep to leave from a stop and can lead to somebody getting rear-ended. This is a well-documented problem for the 10r80 transmission and something needs to be done about it.

What happened is i bought a truck that Ford knows good & well has a defective CDF drum and outer shell but they refuse to issue a recall to fix the transmissions in those year models! Yet in late 2022 they acknowledged the problem and updated the 22+ year models with the correct parts while leaving those of us with the prior 4yrs of trucks out in the cold! My truck is currently undergoing getting a new transmission and it hasn't even reached 70K yet. At 61K I had to have all timing components along with a new oil pump replaced due to the common oil consumption issues on the 13th gen models. Now 8K miles later I'm having to have a new transmission because it started with all the common problems and known issues that everyone else has had with the 13th gen trucks. This is absolutely ridiculous and no if's, and's or but's about it Ford should be liable for it! Every single one of us especially those of us below 100K should be reimbursed. It is a disgrace to own and pay for a vehicle that spends more time at the shop than it does in your driveway! I am fuming mad. Due to my age and health condition this was supposed to be the last vehicle I ever buy yet being on a fixed income I now have a truck that I cannot trust to get me safely to my Dr's appointments or even the local places I have to visit on a weekly basis. Absolutely ludicrous! I have all invoices of all work that has been done and that info has also been put into the Carfax records. The shop i use is very proficient when it comes to recording the information. Within a week once the new transmission is installed I will have that invoice as well as it being loaded into the Carfax records.

I bought my 2019 F-150 a few months ago used. Since then it’s been nothing but problems and honestly, terrifying one’s. The truck has shifted and driven rough since I bought it. But on some occasions it goes from rough driving to potentially accident causing. The truck will randomly decide it does not want to shift from a gear, meaning I can’t speed up on busy 95 traffic or move out of the way of aggressive drivers when needed. The truck also will occasionally shift up or down on its own without warning causing me to slow down quickly while already at interstate speeds. At this point, because I have no choice but to drive it to work, it’s a matter of waiting for the day it downshifts too far while in the interstate causing a crash. The fact that I am scared at times to drive my own vehicle and the manufacturer not being willing to fix it is alarming. Alarming because if this is something they can get away with now, what will they get away with in the future.

I am filing a safety complaint regarding the transmission in my 2019 Ford F-150 equipped with the 5.0L V8 and 10-speed automatic transmission. My vehicle currently has approximately 88,000 miles. The transmission began experiencing abnormal shifting, including skipping/hesitating between gears, harsh shifting, shuddering, and delayed engagement. At times it would appear to skip 2nd gear and go directly into 3rd. I brought the vehicle to a Ford dealership for diagnosis. Ford of Spartanburg performed testing and a road test. Their written diagnosis states that the PCM was tested and had no related DTCs. The technician documented delayed 1-2-3, 2-4 and 3-4 shifts, a 400-500 RPM flare during the 2-4 and 3-4 shifts, and a shudder during the 1-2 shift. The technician checked the transmission fluid and documented that the level was good but that the fluid appeared “super burnt.” The technician further stated “suspect CDF drum bushing shifted” and recommended replacement of the entire transmission assembly. The Ford dealership's estimate for the recommended transmission replacement is $8,737.05. I am concerned that a major internal transmission failure involving the CDF drum/bushing can occur at approximately 88,000 miles and result in delayed, erratic, harsh or unexpected shifting. I am particularly concerned about the potential safety implications if the vehicle unexpectedly loses acceleration or does not respond normally while entering traffic, passing, or traveling at highway speeds. I am requesting that NHTSA document this complaint and investigate whether this represents a broader safety-related defect affecting Ford vehicles equipped with this transmission. I have retained the Ford dealership's diagnostic documentation and can provide it if needed.

Dealership determine and confirmed hard/harsh shifting between 3rd, 5th, 6th while skipping 4th and 5th. No codes or warnings found upon download by the technician. Technician could not replicate it shifting from high gears to 1st and locking the tires. Recommended and completed adaptive learn procedure, but vehicle is still hard shifting 3rd and 4th gear. I started noticing hard and delayed shifts from 7th into 8th gear. My RPM's were not increasing when this happened, and then on a very crowded major road I lost all power, vehicle shut off and drifted, then started up and jerked again very hard. This failure could have caused a severe accident and jeopardized the well being of my wife, daughter, her friend and myself along with any other people that could of potentially been involved in a collision if one had occurred. My dash showed no warning lights. After lots of research and consultation with a private owned mechanic shop, I learned the 2019 F150 has a sever and known transmission issue with the learning tables and the transmission control module resulting in failure. Further research reveled a law suit against ford ([XXX] v. Ford Motor Company (Case No. [XXX] in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, targets Ford over alleged defects in the 10R80 10-speed automatic transmissions equipped in 2017–2020 Ford F-150 trucks) regarding this exact issue I was having with my truck, with only 72,000 miles on it! Bob Bell Ford in Glen Burnie Maryland, was less than helpful and the staff was rude when I was explaining what was happening and the information I learned, and quoted me a price of around $12,000.00 to replace the transmission, and that they knew there was a problem with that transmission. I had the vehicle repaired by Glen Burnie Transmission in Glen Burnie Maryland for $8,200.00. That shop told me that they replace several of these transmissions a month (confirming it is a sever issue) and the service tech could tell me what the 8th digit in my vin was based on the symptoms, and he was spot on! I was told the CDF drum and bushings failing—that cause harsh, erratic shifting, sudden lunging, jerking, hesitation, and gear slipping This repair costed me $8200.00 to replace, and another $450 to Bob Bell Ford for them to repeat to me what I already told them. Since purchasing this vehicle new in Dec 2019, I have had issues with hard shifting/clunking when going from park to reverse and driving. There is also a vibration going down the road and hard, erratic shifting up through the gears, as well as when slowing down. At around 15,000 miles I took it back to the dealership where they could not figure out what was wrong and just reprogrammed the software on the learn to drive system. That would corrected it for a short period of time. This was again done at around 25,000 miles. I brought this up at least 3-4 more times while having it in for servicing at Kruse Ford in Marshall MN and it was always, "cannot duplicate." I took it there at 58,000 miles before the warranty was up and again they said they could not duplicate the problem... It showed up as soon as I pull off the lot.. On 8/6/2026, now with 80,000 miles on it, I took it into Atwater Ford in Atwater MN where I purchased it new and they pulled up Ford TSB 25-2475 where it says the CDF clutch cylinder and a bunch of parts need to be replaced in the transmission. This TSB identified a previous TSB so I went back to see when they came out. In all I found a handful of TSBs on this issue that FIRST came out in May of 2023, well before my warranty was up and when the mileage was under the 60,000.
