Deferred Failure Risk
Vehicle-specific risks from this model-year's complaint record, known defects, and service milestones
Owners of the 2015 VOLVO V60 report engine/powertrain issues more than most other systems. Complaints concentrated in one area often signal a systemic weakness worth a targeted pre-purchase inspection.
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.

The engine consumes an excessive amount of oil, requiring the addition of about one quart every few hundred miles. There are no visible external leaks, and the issue appears to be due to internal engine components such as piston rings allowing oil into the combustion chamber. This poses a risk of engine damage and loss of power. The problem has been observed consistently and confirmed by a repair shop. No crash or safety incident has occurred, but the vehicle's reliability and safety are compromised.
Engine oil consumption issue. It was a known issue. Completed the recommended repair of the piston and rings. Have had constant issues since the repair. Looking for reimbursement for the repair. My engine fell under the guidelines to have the repair covered.
Volvo cars from 2014-2016 has oil consumption due to the bad piston rings design and the manufacturer don’t want to issue a recall for this problem, it’s a serious problem with these models
My Volvo has a known by Volvo defect of consuming too much oil resulting in me needing to top off oil roughly every 6 weeks. Volvo will not cover the repairs in full, I believe this is a safety issue as it could result in a catastrophic failure.
The contact owns a 2015 Volvo V60. The contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing an abnormal oil consumption. The contact stated that the vehicle was consuming 2 quarts of oil for every 1,200 miles driven. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where an oil consumption test was performed, and the contact was advised to return after driving 1,000 miles. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the oil consumption test would be covered. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.
This car has an oil consumption problem but Volvo advises it will not repair. Other, similar models have similar oil consumption problems that are the subject of recall. This was also subject of class action lawsuit We have had to spend hundreds out of pocket to repair. Why isn't this model year in the recall? Other years - same engine - before and after this are subject of recall?
The contact owned a 2015 Volvo V60. The contact initially received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V378000 (Seat Belts). One- and one-half years after receiving the notice, the recall repair was performed at a local dealer. While driving 25 MPH, the contact suffered syncope and struck a tree. The seat belts failed to restrain him and his passenger. The Low-Speed Collision Avoidance and the Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake Systems failed to operate. The passenger struck her head on the windshield. The contact and the passenger were transported to the hospital. The passenger was treated for a severe spinal injury, severe lacerations to her head, a paralyzed vocal cord, fractured ribs, and sternum, a hematoma in her chest, and a fractured right index finger. The contact sustained fractured ribs, a fractured sternum, a fractured right pinky finger, as well as a hematoma in his chest and pain in his lower back. A police report was filed. The vehicle was initially towed to an independent mechanic and later to an impound yard and deemed a total loss. A police report was filed. The manufacturer, Volvo, has now been notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 70,377.
Excessive oil consumption. Piston ring failure. Cylinder 1 spark plug failure due to oil buildup.
Water is leaking inside my 2015 Volvo V60 from the windshield creating a distraction while driving. The Service Rep. from my Volvo dealer said they do no repair windshield seals, only windshield replacement. I brought my car to an auto glass repair shop. After 45 minutes of diagnosis, the mechanic confirmed there is a leak in the windshield seal. The windshield on my vehicle is the original and has never been damage or replaced.
The latch on the driver side door stuck in the open position and the door latch would not function. The door remained unlatched and unsecured. All of the door latches were replaced at the dealer on 28 Dec 2020 per recall R89978. The problem hasn't been confirmed by the dealer yet but is scheduled. The car was parked at the time so no indication of a problem until I sat in the drivers seat and the door remained ajar with the handle stuck in the open position.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 VOLVO V60. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 19V849000 (LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES) HOWEVER, THE PART TO DO THE RECALL REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE VOLVO STORE (1051 W WEBSTER AVE #3033, WINTER PARK, FL 32789;(407) 628-0550). THE DEALER REFUSED TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT DUE TO PARTS NOT BEING AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE IF THE ISSUE AND STATED THAT THE PARTS WOULD BE AVAILABLE SECOND WEEK OF JUNE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCE A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
SHARP EDGE ON BOTTOM OF STEERING WHEEL METALLIC MOLDING CAUSED A INJURY. A LACERATION AND BLEEDING OCCURRED. INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE TURNING. WHEN STRAIGHTENING OUT OF THE TURN, THE STEERING WHEEL WAS SLIDING PAST THE DRIVERS HANDS, CATCHING AND CUTTING THE SKIN OF THE DRIVERS FINGER. DRIVER NEARLY LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AFTER PAIN CAUSED THEM TO RELEASE THE WHEEL FROM THEIR CONTROL.

OWNER IS EXPERIENCING A LOUD POPPING SOUND IN THE DRIVER DASH AREA THAT IS TRIGGERED BY TURNING, ACCELERATION, OR GOING OVER BUMPS. THE NOISE SEEMS TO BE COMING FROM THE FIREWALL AREA WHERE THE STEERING PASSES THROUGH THE FIREWALL. THE OWNER HAS HAD IT AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR TWICE NOW AND THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THE SOUND, BUT CANNOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM.
CAR EXPERIENCES PREDETONATION/PREIGNITION OF THE SPARK PLUGS. THIS CAUSES THE TIMING TO BE RETARDED, CAUSING A VERY DANGEROUS LACK OF POWER, I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR IN 7X FOR RESOLUTION, THEY HAVE REBUILT THE ENGINE, ISSUE IS REOCCURRING. VOLVO CARS OF NA IS DOING NOTHING TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. THERE ARE MULTIPLE REPORTS OF THIS ISSUE ON THE INTERNET (SWEEDESPEED ETHUSIAST FORUM) AS WELL AS MANY OTHER EXAMPLES OF THIS YET, ONCE AGAIN, VOLVO CARS NA IS REFUSING TO ADDRESS OR RESOLVE THIS ISSUE RESULTING IN A DANGER TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC. I HAVE INCLUDED THE LETTER I SENT TO SCOTT DOERING, VP OF CUSTOMER SERVICE, HE HAD ONE OF HIS TEAM CALL ME TODAY TO DENY MY REQUEST TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY OR RESOLVE THE ISSUE. IN MY LETTER IS THE CHRONOLOGY OF SERVICE VISITS, OF WHICH I ALSO HAVE THE RECEIPTS. *JS
VEHICLE HAD BEEN FUNCTION PROPERLY UPON DEPARTING SUFFOLK COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE SELDEN NY. DRIVER MADE SEVERAL TURNS AND BRAKED MULTIPLE TIMES. AT OR ABOUT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT DRIVER NOTICED A BURNING ODOR. DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE. BRAKES DID NOT FUNCTION, DRIVER PUMPED BRAKES AND THEY HAD NO EFFECT. DIVER DOWNSHIFTED THAT CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO MODERATELY SLOW. DRIVER IMPACTED VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF HER AT APPROXIMATELY 20 M.P.H. IN ADDITION TO BRAKES NOT FUNCTIONING AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY INDICATING A MORE SYSTEMIC/CATASTROPHIC MECHANICAL FAILURE. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS AND CORRESPONDENCE ADVISING MANUFACTURER'S US OFFICE TO THE BEST OF REGISTRANT'S KNOWLEDGE NO REASONABLE ACTIONS HAVE BEEN TAKEN BY MANUFACTURER TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE OR ADDRESS THE PROBLEM.
DURING ACCELERATION, ENGINE MAKES A PING/KNOCK SOUND AND THEN THE CAR LOSES POWER FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS. THE ISSUE IS INTERMITTENT. IT HAPPENS SEVERAL TIMES PER DAY. PLEASE SEE VIDEO FOR FULL DETAIL. HTTPS://YOUTU.BE/B2XMBDNE2B0 THIS ISSUE CAUSES PROBLEMS WHEN JOINING TRAFFIC. YOU NEVER FEEL CONFIDENT WHEN JOINING TRAFFIC. ( HTTPS://YOUTU.BE/B2XMBDNE2B0 )
THE STEERING WHEEL PADDLE SHIFTERS AUTOMATICALLY TURN THEMSELVES OFF. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS IN SITUATION WHERE ENGINE BRAKING IS NECESSARY (INCLEMENT WEATHER, STEEP DOWN GRADES. WHEN USING THE PADDLES TO DOWN SHIFT AND SLOW THE CAR, THEY WILL AUTOMATICALLY TURN OFF, THE CAR THEN SHIFTS INTO HIGHER GEARS, CAUSING THE CAR TO ACCELERATE (WHEN GOING DOWNHILL OR WHILE SLOWING IN SLIPPERY CONDITIONS). THE CAR CAN BE PUT INTO "SPORT MODE", BUT THIS CAUSE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO BECOME VERY TOUCHY, WHICH IS UNSAFE IN SLIPPERY CONDITION. THE PADDLE SHIFTERS SHOULD NEVER AUTOMATICALLY TURN THEMSELVES OFF, IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE THE DRIVER THAT ENGAGES AND DISENGAGES THEM.
VOLVO CLEARLY RATES THE V60 FOR TOWING. HOWEVER VOLVO DOES NOT SELL THEIR TOWING HITCH AND ELECTRONICS MODIFICATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES. THIS IS CONCERNING AS THEIR HITCHES ON ALL OTHER CARS INTERACT WITH THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEMS TO ALTER ITS BEHAVIOR WHEN TOWING. FURTHER THEIR EUROPEAN HITCH DOES NOT END UP UNDER THE REAR BUMPER ENERGY ABSORPTION STRUCTURE LIKE ALL OF THE AFTER MARKET ONES AVAILABLE (LIMITING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ENERGY ABSORPTION ABILITY IN A REAR IMPACT. THEIR DEALERS HAVE NO RECOMMENDATION TO MAINTAIN A SAFE VEHICLE WHILE TOWING AND YET VOLVO CLAIMS A TOWING CAPACITY. I'VE ALSO CONTACTED VOLVO VIA THEIR CUSTOMER SUPPORT LINE AND THEY HAVE NO ANSWER FOR HOW TO SAFELY TOW AS WELL AS EMAILING THEM AND GETTING NO RESPONSE.
I AM A SINGLE MOM WITH AN AUTISTIC SON, AND TWO OTHER CHILDREN. I USED TO WORK FOR MITCHELL VOLVO IN SIMSBURY, CT AND JUST PURCHASED MY 2015.5 VOLVO V60 IN DECEMBER AND ONLY HAVE 10K MILES ON IT. I DRIVE, LITERALLY, THREE MILES PER DAY, EXCEPT FOR MY FIRST INCIDENT: IN EARLY JULY 2016, I DROVE TO ROCHESTER, NY FOR A FUNERAL FOR MY UNCLE. UPON PULLING OUT INTO RT 495, I HIT THE GAS, AND NOTHING. I HAD MY AUTISTIC SON AND 87 YEAR OLD FATHER IN THE CAR, I PANICKED AS CARS WERE COMING, AND CAR WASN'T MOVING, I SLAMMED ON THE GAS, AND THE CAR BANGED INTO GEAR AND WENT. BROUGHT IT INTO MICHELL'S AND A TOTAL TRANSMISSION FAILURE WAS FOUND ON THE ENGINE. IT WAS "SUPPOSEDLY FIXED". AFTER THAT, THE CAR SHIFTED FUNNY AND THE GEAR SHIFT ITSELF WAS LOOSE AND YOU DIDN'T FEEL THE TIGHTNESS OF FEELING THE CAR GO INTO GEAR AS YOU SHIFTED FROM PARK TO DRIVE, ETC. THEN TRAVELED TO THE CAPE TWO WEEKS LATER, WAS BACKING UP, BACK UP CAMERA WAS ON, THEN HEARD THE ENGINE REV, AND LOOKED DOWN AND CAR HAD SLIPPED INTO NEUTRAL. I CALLED MITCHELLS AND THEY COULDN'T GET ME IN FOR THREE WEEKS SO THAT I COULD HAVE A LOANER VEHICLE. THE CAR IS IN THE SHOP NOW, MITCHELL VOLVO, AND THEY ARE FINDING NOTHING WRONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION! THIS CAR IS A DEATH TRAP! I'VE BEEN A FAITHFUL VOLVO CUSTOMER, HAD A NIGHTMARE 2005 XC90 AND IF YOU LOOK AT MY RECORD WITH VOLVO, I HELPED 20 OTHER FAMILIES WITH THE SAME ISSUE RECEIVE FREE SECOND AND THIRD FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS FROM VOLVO. I DON'T TAKE FAULTY/POORLY DESIGNED VEHICLES THAT CAUSE MY FAMILIES SAFETY TO BE PUT ON THE TABLE LIGHTLY. I HAVE ALREADY FILED ON THE EDMUNDS BLOG YET AGAIN! I WILL BE FILING WITH THE NTSB, EDMUNDS CONSISTENTLY, AND THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT CONSUMER PROTECTION AND MOTOR VEHICLE UNLESS VOLVO IS FOR ONCE WILLING TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE THIS TIME. THIS CAR HAS SO FEW MILES, VOLVO SHOULD DO SOMETHING.
THE CAR, 2015 VOLVO V60, BEGAN SHUTTING OFF ITS MOTOR WHEN I CAME TO A STOP OR WHEN I PUT IT IN PARK AND A FEW TIMES WHEN I CAME TO A HARD STOP. THIS WOULD REQUIRE MY PUTTING THE CAR IN PARK, IF NOT ALREADY, PRESSING THE BREAK PEDAL AND PUSHING THE START BUTTON. DURING THESE TIMES, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD LOCK UP AS IT SHOULD IF A DRIVER PURPOSELY TURNED THEIR CAR OFF. THE SYMPTOM WOULD HAPPEN INTERMITTENTLY. I LEFT MY CAR FOR A WEEK WITH THE LOCAL VOLVO DEALER HOPING THIS SPORADIC PROBLEM WOULD BE SUCCESSFULLY DIAGNOSED. A SERVICE DEPARTMENT TECH DROVE MY CAR FOR THE WEEK. AT THE END OF THE WEEK, I WAS TOLD MY CAR DID NOT EXHIBIT ANY OF THE SYMPTOMS, BUT, IF A WARNING APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD, THIS WOULD PRECIPITATE A DIAGNOSIS. TWO MONTHS LATER THE PROBLEM BECAME MUCH WORSE AND SCARIER. MY HUSBAND WAS SAFELY PASSING ANOTHER CAR WHICH WAS GOING TEN MILES UNDER THE SPEED LIMIT ON A TWO WAY ROAD. AT THE POINT HE IS BESIDE THE OTHER VEHICLE, THE VOLVO LOSES POWER. HE APPLIES EXCELLERATION, BUT THE CAR DOES NOT RESPOND. THE CARS WHICH WERE BEHIND MY HUSBAND HAVE CLOSED THE GAP HE JUST VACATED MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR HIM TO MOVE BACK IN POSITION. NOW ONCOMING TRAFFIC IS HEADED HIS WAY. FORTUNATELY, HE IS ABLE TO CUT IN FRONT OF THE SLOWER MOVING CAR LEAVING LESS THAN A FOOT OF CLEARANCE BETWEEN HE AND THE OTHER CAR. THIS TIME THE WARNING "REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE" IS DISPLAYED ON THE DASHBOARD. THE CAR IS IMMEDIATELY TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALER WHO, AGAIN, DRIVES THE CAR FOR A WEEK AND FINDS NOTHING WRONG. MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE DASHBOARD WARNING APPARENTLY CARRIES NO SIGNIFICANCE, BECAUSE A CODE IS NOT PULLED DURING COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS AND THERE IS NO OTHER RECOURSE. I AM SENT HOME WITH AN UNSAFE AND DANGEROUS VEHICLE. I BOUGHT A VOLVO FOR ITS SAFETY AND RELIABILITY. HOW IRONIC! I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER. SHAME ON VOLVO. BUYER BEWARE.
Complaint & Reliability Timeline
Annual complaints (blue) vs. composite reliability score (amber) — recall years marked in red
The blue line shows 21 NHTSA complaints on file for the VOLVO V60 — a relatively low volume that spans from 2015 to 2025.
The amber reliability line averaged 97/100 across the vehicle's life — relatively stable, with the lowest point of 88/100 in 2023.
Notably, despite 21 complaints on file, no recall has been issued — either the defect pattern has not met NHTSA's threshold for a formal campaign, or a recall may be forthcoming.
Red dots on the amber line flag 2 years (2017, 2023) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
