VERIFYCriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Typical interval: 120,000 mi / 10 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify timing chain tensioner service history with the seller
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
VERIFYCriticalWater Pump
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 8 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify water pump service history with the seller
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
VERIFYHighTransmission Fluid / Service
Typical interval: 60,000 mi / 5 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify transmission fluid / service service history with the seller
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
VERIFYHighDifferential / Transfer Case Fluid
Typical interval: 50,000 mi / 4 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify differential / transfer case fluid service history with the seller
On 4WD/AWD vehicles, neglected differential or transfer case fluid causes metal-on-metal wear. Replacement costs $1,500–$4,000.
VERIFYHighCoolant Flush
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 5 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify coolant flush service history with the seller
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
VERIFYModerateSpark Plugs (iridium/platinum)
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 8 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify spark plugs (iridium/platinum) service history with the seller
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
VERIFYModerateFuel Injectors
Typical interval: 120,000 mi / 10 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify fuel injectors service history with the seller
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.

- Roof and pillars I have been having for almost a year when trying to open and slide on the track. It is harsh and noisy. - Engine oil filter housing and coolant leak. This issue is critical. Finally on April 10, 2025 I ended spending $1007.52 to get the housing replaced to stop the ongoing drip drip effect. - Steering gear box. This issue remains despite the fact that I replaced struts. For almost a year since I bought the vehicle, there appears to be a clunking type noise especially when going over rail tracks on the road where I am forced to almost come to a complete stop to let the car go over the tracks out of fear of sustaining damage.

My 2016 BMW X1 28i is leaking coolant. I am also getting a smell of something burning inside the car when driving. This is consistent with problems associated with the 2024 recall for water pump. I was told by my dealership that my vehicle was not one affected by the recall. I think it might be one that is. The vehicle could catch fire if there is a failure of the wiring.

ODI #11664440VISIBILITY/WIPER

About 24 months back the sunroof curtain of my BMW X1 started having problems when I retract or operate it. It used to make stretching noises when I tried to open my sunroof and after a few times I heard a crackling noise and before I can stop it the curtain tore. Initially it was a small tear, so it did not bother much but over time the curtain completely left the guide/rail on one side and started sagging. Given it is a sunroof the curtain is as long as the vehicle and so now it is sagging to a point that it obstructs driver's visibly in back mirror. BMW won't do anything about it saying it is out of warranty and ultimately to avoid accidents I had to remove the curtain completely. I also tried getting it fixed, but the issue is not just the curtain but the rails of the curtain which is a non-replaceable part :( I would have to replace full sunshade assembly which is upwards of $1600. Also, it seems to be a common problem with these vehicles. Here are more examples of it: [XXX] . Please help me and other drivers be safe on the road. After I got my 2016 BMW X1 from Service, I heard a rough sound when I reversed the vehicle from Park. After a few days, I noticed my vehicle showing an error saying "Secure Vehicle against rolling" every time I parked the vehicle and advising me to use my hand brake. I then did some search on the web and finally took it for servicing at BMW Rockville, Maryland where the service department is managed by Auto Nation. They gave me a quote for around $2500 to fix this issue. Based on the research of this issue on the web, it looks like a $10 spring malfunction causes this issue. I have less than 55,000 miles on my vehicle. I am not sure if this issue is caused by some incorrect service work performed by Auto Nation The report from Auto Nation is at the link below [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The transmission lock sensor is defective in this car design- the spring in the gearshift assembly that contacts the transmission lock sensor has a faulty design and is prone to breaking. This leads to a warning in the car that the transmission lock has not occurred when the car is in park (although it is actually functioning). This creates a "false alarm" situation that then does not allow the user to know if the transmission is truly locked in park This defect has occurred in my car as diagnosed by both dealer and independent mechanic. This is a common and known defect amongst X1 owners (as well as the mechanical sibling Mini Cooper). It is also well known amongst the BMW dealer service; It should be consider a recall defect

And my console has a hazard warning that shows: Secure vehicle against rolling. This happens every time, even if the car is parked on a completely flat surface in no danger whatsoever of rolling. I've read SEVERAL X1 owners get this message and all state this needs to be a RECALL. They take their vehicles in for service and are told it's between $2500 and $3000 due to a tiny spring that breaks and the selector no longer communicates with the car in the parking position, and because of this there is an error message in dashboard in which warns you to make sure the vehicle is secure

Keep getting the following warning "Transmission - secure vehicle with parking brake". It seems this is a known issue relating to a simple spring in the gear shifter that causes the computer to not recognize that the vehicle is in park. During the parking of the vehicle (gearbox shifter in “Park Position") and after turning off the engine, the iDrive system shows the following message: “Secure vehicle with parking brake and have the problem checked by dealership. This happens when I start up the vehicle in park and when turning off the vehicle. Also, when the vehicle is parked on level ground the error will remain even if the parking brake is applied. After turning on the engine again and putting the shifter either in R or D position, the error goes away. Dealership error computer diagnostic shows the code “420106” - Shift Lock solenoid: Selector lever wrongly not locked in Park. I shared with the dealership that this is a manufacturer problem and if they could fix it for free or give me a discount to fix the problem due to safety issues and I was told “No” I have to pay the total cost to repair this problem. Currently I am still driving a vehicle that can increase my risk of injury and the injury of bystanders. I purchased this vehicle after I retired because BMW makes good vehicles and this would be the last car I would purchase in my life.

During the parking of my vehicles (gearbox shifter in P position) and after turning off the engine, the iDrive system shows the following messages: "Transmission: Secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center." This happens each and every time and also when the vehicle is parked on level ground the error will remain even if the parking brake is applied. After turning on the engine again and putting the shifter either in R or D position, the error goes away. I have ever come to dealer for help, but they charge 300$ for any diagnosis. So I went to a local BMW body shop, and they are able to reproduce it and couldn't fix it completely. After studying this issue on one of the biggest BMW global forums - [XXX] , I came to the opinion that the problem most likely is either in weak design of the gearbox shifter unit or in the gearbox mechatronic unit and unfortunately is a common problem for BMW models. I'm concerned that BMW hasn’t announced any recall procedure, despite the fact that both of the units mentioned are quite expensive and definitely shouldn’t appear after such low odometer readings that are displayed. Other than me, many BMW X1 owners are experiencing the same issue: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

On 6/27/23 the car dealership confirmed that the emergency brake sensor has broken and the car now misinforms the driver of whether the emergency brake has been activated. This had been an Issue for a few months. The display screen informs the driver that the brake is not activated, even if it has been activated. The result of this is that a driver may start to ignore the incorrect warning and may cause a driver to get confused regarding whether the brake is activated. A failure to properly activate an emergency brake could result in life threatening injuries. The car was taken to the dealer who confirmed the above problem with the sensor. I explored online blogs and found that many other X1 BMW owners have experienced similar issues. It looks as if this is a failing of the sensor system in this model car.

My BMW X1 started to display a message on the screen that says "Secure vehicle against rolling". This message has been displayed every time I turn the car on for the past year. I was quoted over $2000 for BMW to repair this issue. The sunroof shade is a common failure point on these cars that’s not being addressed. A quick internet search provides hundreds of reports of the same with the 2016+ vehicles. While it may seem harmless, my 3 year old constantly had the sun beating on the top of his head, especially in the hot summer sun. I had to pay somebody to install 5% tint on the glass because the sun was enough to give his skin a light sunburn. BMW wants $2500 to fix what’s obviously a defect.

When parking or starting the car a warning message is issued indicate that I should secure the vehicle against rolling and the transmission is flagged as the problem. I did some research online and found out this is a very common problem with the BMW X1. A small spring breaks in the shifter linkage. https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1840937. BMW is charging upwards of $3000 to make the repair even though it is a known common defect in the car. This should be covered by a safety recall.

I took my car to the dealer after I started to get an error message saying that I needed to put the parking brake on to prevent rolling. It was very stressful driving the car while this error message was in place. When I took it took the dealer, I was charged $200 for a diagnostic and was told there's nothing operationally wrong with the car but the sensor can't tell that the car is in park and is giving me this error message. I was quoted over $2,500 to fix this--replacing the entire gear shift assembly apparently because there is a broken spring somewhere in the system. This absolutely should be a recall issue. It's ridiculous that owners should be required to spend so much money to get this fixed just to get peace of mind and feel assured that the vehicle we're driving is safe. I have gotten all required and suggested maintenance religiously and promptly, but this one is a tough pill to swallow. BMW should do the right thing and recall vehicles to correct this. If they're not willing to do this voluntarily, they should be forced to do so. Thank you very much for looking into this. My car is available for inspection and I'm happy to provide photos or anything else you may need.

Transmission: Secure vehicle from rolling I just began getting this warning chime without an error code. However, when I search online there are hundreds of BMW X1 owners (2016) reporting the same issue. In addition, owners of Mini Coopers (Minis) which are built on the same chasis, with the same components as the BMW X1 also report this same issue. NTSA should issue a recall if this issue is as serious as BMW service says it is - that the car may not stay in PARK after the gear shift is put into park. However, BMW only covers this clearly design defect for up to 50,000 miles warranty. This should be a safety recall before someone's car that is not securely in PARK because of the defect accidentally rolls into a person or pedestrian.

2016 BMW x1 has a key component (SHIFTER LINKAGE SPRING) and system failure per my local BMW dealer in Atlanta, Georgia -- it states: "Secure vehicle against rolling" when placing the vehicle in park -- even though the Parking Brake shows being engaged. The dealership agreed it is a common linkage spring issue that creates this safety issue however, they want to charge my family for a gear selector replacement. Everything still shifts completely fine in the car, the parking brake supposedly engages, and the car shifts into park fine however, know one at a dealership is able to validate that parking brake actually is engaged? That said, I live in a house that is on a hill and I park on the street each night....how in the world is this not addressed as a safety issue?

The panoramic sunroof shade blind has become detached due to failing adhesive. The consequence of this failure renders the vehicle difficult to drive and impacts safety of occupants and non occupants. To illustrate this issue, it is easier to quote the incident. On driving the vehicle the sunroof shade became unattached from its rail (right side). A natural thing to do is attempt to open the shade and close again in the hope that it re-attaches itself. This only made the situation worse. The loose shade impedes the drivers view out the right side of the vehicle. Driving the vehicle, it is crucial that this view should be clear and unobstructed (especially when lane changing on a freeway!). A corollary to the above issue is that the sagging loose blind is a distraction to the driver of the vehicle. The drivers attention needs to be 100% dedicated to the operation of the vehicle and the safety of others. This flapping distraction reduces this significantly.

The sunroof shadescreen failed to close: it is a safety issue because it is impossible to close the shade anymore and the sun is hitting your head and eyes all the time: when I first noticed it I was driving and a sound came from the sun roof and if I looked it would have been a crash. Taking to the dealership iwould cost 2000 dollars to replace. It is a manufacturer defect that that something that is used so infrequently fails so easily. To be honest we have probably used it only a couple dozen times since we have the car and I can’t believe it would fail so easily. I also read on forums that this happened to a lot of other car owners who are complaining about the same issue so it is something that the manufacturer should cover:

I took the car to BMW of Rockville Maryland where i was told the message from the parking breaking was not being registered by the transmission thus i needed a new gear shift. My car the BMW x1 only had 32411 miles at the time. I had purchase the car in 11/2019. In all my years of driving cars up to 100,000 plus mile i have never had to replace a gear shifter. A car with such low miles should not have a gear shifter issue. This is a manufacture defect and a huge safety issue. My safety was put at risk and the general public the car could have rolled away while parked bc the car did not recognize it was in park. The car could have rolled with me causing me to run into someone , another car or a structure? The manufacture warranty had already expired and i had to pay 2400 to get this issue fixed. On the BMW forum on line there are plenty of other owners of this vehicle with this very same issue. I contacted BMW head quarters and they flat out refused to pay for the repair as a good faith repair. BMW should have recalled this model and corrected this gear shifter free of charge. From my understanding its a faulty or cheap spring that is the cause of this issue. This should not be the burden of the consumer. I WAS TRAVELLING ABOUT 50MPH AND SLOWING DOWN TO THE EXIT RAMP; THERE WAS NO VEHICLE AHEAD OF US. HALF THE WINDSHIELD GOES VERY DARK , NEARLY BLACK AT NIGHT. IT IS FACTUALLY DANGEROUS AND IF I HAVE TO DRIVE AT NIGHT MY SPEED IS GREATLY REDUCED AS I CANNOT SEE AT ALL. I CANNOT SEE MORE THAN 30 FEET IN FRONT OF ME AND CANNOT SEE TURNS AND CANNOT SEE AT ALL WITH HILLS. EVEN DRIVING VERY SLOW, 10MPH OR LESS IN A PARKING LOT THE EXTREME LACK OF VISIBILITY BECOMES 100% OBVIOUS AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. BMW CORPORATE OFFICE SAYS THEY ARE NOT AWARE OF ANY TECHNOLOGY THAT DIMS THE WINDSHIELD, THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP IS CLUELESS TO THIS AS WELL. I HAVE READ THAT A SAVVY AND HONEST DEALERSHIP CAN ADJUST THIS THROUGH THE ON BOARD COMPUTER CONTROLS. I REALLY DONT KNOW. I AM SCARED TO DRIVE AT NIGHT THAT IS BOTTOM LINE, NO ONE CAN SEEM TO HELP ME DESPITE IT BEING ALL OVER THE INTERNET WITH ALL TYPES OF VEHICLES. I WANT THIS DOCUMENTED IF CRASH OR INJURY OCCURS I WANT PROTECTION LEGALLY. EXAMPLE-DRIVING POSTED SPEED NO ONCOMING TRAFFIC AT NIGHT APPROACH SLIGHT TURN OR INCLINE AND IN AN INSTANT THE DARKNESS DESCENDS AND THE REACTION IS TO HIT THE BRAKES AS YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU ARE ON THE ROAD. THIS IS THE FRONT WINDSHIELD. I BEG OF YOU PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS, I AM SHOCKED THERE HAS NOT BEEN MORE DEATHS OR CRASHES AND INJURIES. I BROUGHT A 3RD PARTY WITH ME TO SHOW THEM AND THE REPLY WAS, "I CANNOT SEE AND I AM THE PASSENGER" "OH MY GOD ITS BLACK IN FRONT OF ME" ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS DRIVE ANY NUMBER OF VEHICLES AT NIGHT AND YOU WILL SEE. ADAPTIVE HEADLIGHT ISSUE, SOME CHEMICAL ACTIVATED THING IN WINDSHIELD? DONT REALLY KNOW.

ODI #11372658SERVICE BRAKES

THE FRONT BRAKES HAVE AN ISSUE THAT BMW KNOWS ABOUT, AS THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME IT WAS A COMMON ISSUE WITH 2016-2020 X1S AND X2S. THE BRAKE PADS ON THE FRONT WHEELS HAVE AN ISSUE WHERE ONE BRAKE PAD WILL WEAR EXTREMELY QUICKLY WITHIN 5,000-20,000 MILES. WHILE THE OTHER BRAKE PAD WILL WEAR AS IT SHOULD. AS THE BRAKE PAD THAT WEARS DOWN QUICKLY IS THE INNER BRAKE PAD. TO ACTUALLY SEE THE BRAKE PAD ONE MUST REMOVE THE CAR WHEEL TO ACCESS ANY VISIBILITY OF THE BRAKE PAD ITSELF. DUE TO THIS VISIBILITY ISSUE, THE DEALERSHIP ALLOWED ME TO LEAVE WITH LESS THAN 2MM OF BRAKE PAD LEFT ON THE INNER SIDE OF THE CAR. THIS IS A HAZARD FOR ANYONE DRIVING THIS YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL AS THEY WILL NOT HAVE ANY STOPPING POWER WHILE DRIVING. THE CAR WAS STATIONARY.

The blue line shows 159 total NHTSA complaints filed over 11 years, with the worst year being 2023 (38 complaints).

The amber reliability line averaged 94/100 across the vehicle's life — relatively stable, with the lowest point of 89/100 in 2023.

The red dashed line marks recall issuance — the first recall came 3 years after owners began filing complaints, a lag that indicates the manufacturer was slow to formally acknowledge these problems.

Red dots on the amber line flag 2020, a year when complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.

N20 and N26 2.0L four-cylinder engines suffer from timing chain wear and tensioner failure — particularly in lower-speed, short-trip driving. The failure mode can lead to sudden engine stalling or catastrophic engine damage if the chain jumps or breaks. BMW extended coverage on timing components in many markets.

HOW TO CLAIM: Contact BMW NA or your BMW dealer with your VIN. Reference N20/N26 timing chain extended warranty and Service Action 12 17 500. If out of coverage, replacement of chain, tensioner, and guides typically runs $2,000–$4,000.
