Critical Deferred Risk
Critical deferred failure risk — 3 safety-critical or high-cost components are past their service interval. Without immediate attention, repair costs will compound significantly.
No odometer data on record. Mileage is estimated at ~108,000 mi based on average annual driving. Items marked EST. OVERDUE may already be due — verify service history with the seller. Items marked OVERDUE are confirmed past-due based on vehicle age alone.
DUE SOONCriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Service interval: 120,000 mi · Est. ~108,000 mi (no odometer on record)
Schedule Timing Chain Tensioner service before 120,000 mi
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
EST. OVERDUECriticalWater Pump
Service interval: 8 yr · Vehicle age: 9 yr · Past due by age
Service Water Pump immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 8 yr interval
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
EST. OVERDUEHighTransmission Fluid / Service
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 9 yr · Past due by age
Service Transmission Fluid / Service immediately — already past the 60,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
EST. OVERDUEHighCoolant Flush
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 9 yr · Past due by age
Service Coolant Flush immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
EST. OVERDUEModerateSpark Plugs (iridium/platinum)
Service interval: 8 yr · Vehicle age: 9 yr · Past due by age
Service Spark Plugs (iridium/platinum) immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 8 yr interval
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
DUE SOONModerateFuel Injectors
Service interval: 120,000 mi · Est. ~108,000 mi (no odometer on record)
Schedule Fuel Injectors service before 120,000 mi
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.

I have been trying to register my vehicle in California for several months, however, in order to do so, I need the car to pass SMOG. Initially I was told that the issue was related to an emissions sensor and that I had to drive the vehicle a few more miles to get the sensor to register properly. This turned out not to be the case. A short time later, the fuel gauge completely stopped working. I took it to an authorized Audi repair shop that told me the issue was related to a the "Fuel Tank Sending Unit". That part was replaced by the repair shop, however, the issue persisted. The authorized repair shop is now telling me that it the entire tank needs to be replaced in order to fix the issue.. I have searched and this seems to be a common issue among Audi vehicles; the sensor stops working and the gauge stops responding. Audi seems to know that this is an issue. Can this possibly be investigated.

ODI #11682928EXTERIOR LIGHTING

The headlights on my 2017 Audi A4 have developed stress cracks in the headlamp housing. According to the inspection performed by an authorized Audi dealer, these cracks will obscure headlight projection and lower the visibility range at night. The dealer specifically noted there were no signs of outside influence or misuse, and the issue is likely due to internal headlight temperature, external ambient temperature, and age. This defect directly impairs visibility and makes it unsafe to drive the vehicle at night or in low-light conditions. Headlights are a critical safety system. The problem has been confirmed and documented by the Audi dealership in a written inspection report. Audi of America has acknowledged that the defect is unrelated to misuse but refuses to fully assist with repairs, despite admitting it impacts visibility. The issue is ongoing and worsens with time. There were no warning lamps or dashboard messages related to the defect prior to its discovery. The vehicle and documentation are available for inspection upon request. This is a safety concern that puts me and others at risk due to reduced nighttime visibility.

The Audi "Drive Select" transmission function switches to "Sports Mode" in rain and snow. This makes the vehicle dangerously jumpy in slippery conditions. This has happened to me (I think) three times in the last couple of years, always in rain or snow. My knowledge of the car allowed me to slowly delve into the screen functions to reprogram the transmission while driving in these dangerous conditions, but I don't know if I could always do it again, or if others might find it too confusing in the moment.

I experienced similar undesirable engine behavior on two occasions. Upon coming to a stop, the auto start/stop system stopped the engine. Shortly after, when attempting to drive away, the stop/start system attempted to start the engine, but failed; the starter briefly activated to turn over the engine, but the engine did not start and continue running. The car was left in the following condition: Engine off. Gear indicator showing "D". Accelerator pedal unresponsive. Regaining engine power required turning the car off, applying the brake pedal, turning the car on, and selecting "D" with the gear selector. This behavior occurred on two occasions on different days; once on 16 March 2024 and the first time within several days prior. Both occasions occurred before the engine was at full operating temperature, and while the car was on a slight uphill slope. Ambient temperatures were in the high 40's or 50's Fahrenheit. By luck, neither occasion resulted in an unsafe traffic condition.

2017 A4 Audi Allroad- while making turns at low speeds with the steering wheel, the vehicle makes cracking, popping and vibration noises. The noise was inspected and reproduced, confirmed on 1/4/2023 by Audi Fletcher Jones, Costa Mesa, California and advised to replace engine mounts, and both front upper control arms, total repair bill $3240.27. After vehicle repairs the steering noises and vibration returned again with no warning lamps, or messages. The vehicle was dropped off at Audi Fletcher Jones, Costa Mesa, CA on 11/28/2023. Audi Fletcher Jones now states it is due to possible defective steering rack and quoted $4,237.9 for repairs on 12/27/2023. Possible safety risk to myself and others if there is an Audi Manufacture defect within the steering rack which can cause loss of steering. Steering rack failure should not be occurring on a vehicle with mileage - only 46,742 miles. NHSTA please investigate Audi of America for possible manufacture defects of engine mounts, control arms, and steering racks. My vehicle is available for inspection upon request.

2017 A4 B9 premium plus model, AWD, 2.0T. I have had an Audi dealership service my car for all major service intervals outside of oil change, not only at recommended intervals but even early. 3 years ago I had my 40K mile service done at 35K miles. Spark plugs were replaced by Audi Hawthorne in Westchester county, NY. One week ago, at 49K miles (well before the 6 years or 60K miles Audi says their spark plugs will last) my engine seized while driving and was misfiring. This caused an engine shut down WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION on the highway. I was able to restart and make it off the highway where the car seized again. I had to then be towed 30 miles back home. Took it to my locally well known body shop that I have used for years for them to say: 1. My spark plugs were loose and installed incorrectly and 2. The electrode at the top of the plug had broken off TWO SEPERATE SPARK PLUGS and fallen into the engine, causing scoring to the engine and #4 piston as well as blow-by during combustion. They said this had to be caused by a manufacturing defect PLUS incorrect install. they fixed what they could and recommended I take it to Audi. Audi is now saying I need a whole new engine because of damage to piston 4, and not saying they will cover the replacement cost of $21,500.

ODI #11521754ENGINE

Start Stop system failures. Upon engine restarting, it stalls instead. This has happened on multiple occasions and the dealer response is to just turn it off every time you start the car. Causes dangerous situations due to inability to move car until full power cycle happens.

I was driving on the freeway at night. There was a sudden explosion that sounded like a gunshot. I was shocked and afraid. I heard the rain outside, so it seemed like there was a hole in the car. I pulled off the freeway and went to a well lit gas station to inspect the car. The sunroof had exploded upward. Fortunately the fabric sunshade was closed so the shards of glass remained above it. There was no hole in the fabric so nothing had fallen through the glass. There is no trajectory of a rock kicked up by another vehicle that could have exploded a roof outward. I did not go under an overpass from which something could have fallen. There was no rock or meteor in my car—as mentioned, the underlying sunshade was not pierced by a falling object. This occurred suddenly and without warning. Consumers are clearly complaining about this problem but nothing is being done. I will talk to my insurance company and Audi tomorrow as this happened late on a Friday night. Audi should not only eat the cost of this repair but these manufacturers should be forced to fix this problem. It is a horrible sudden sound, shards of glass could have hit me driving if the fabric had been open, and anyone in the back seat could have been injured or blinded by shattered glass. This problem has been a problem for years. Shame on everyone for allowing this to continue.

The Thermostat and it's house is failing on my of the 2017 audi a4 causing the coolant water to leak which makes the car heat up quickly due to leak and not having sufficient coolant water. So many of the b9 generation of audi a4 owners are also complain about this issue. Audi is charging $2500 to fix this known issue.

There was no warning light illuminated. The contact disengaged the seat heater. The contact stated that upon arriving at her destination and exiting the vehicle, she noticed that a portion of the seat's lumbar support had melted and created a hole. Additionally, the contact noticed that there was a hole in her coat. There was no warning light illuminated. There was no injury sustained. The contact was able to drive to her residence. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V874000 (Seats, Air Bags) as the VIN was included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 83,867.

Symptom of low coolant in overflow reservoir; below minimum line. Pressure test concluded leak in thermostat/water pump part. Appears to be a rampant problem spanning over a decade and affecting multiple trims and redesigns (i.e B8/B9 redesign/updates). Safety put at risk for possible vehicle fire or high pressure damage for engine coolant/radiator. The problem was reproduced and confirmed at a local (non-audi dealership) repair shop. They stated that the low level of coolant was due to a small leak in the thermostat/water pump housing. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance. It will soon be in the local Audi dealership for a second opinion and/or possible resolution. I received a warning indicator on the dash and written pop up message on the dash board that indicated low coolant reservoir level. No OBD codes were collected by the independent service shop. They said that non were being displayed or read besides what was displayed on the dash.

Engine light on Dealership found a rodent nest in the engine space in the car. Dealership considers that fluids used to coat Audi engine wiring attract rodents. Dealership considers this to be a health and safety issue. Dealership considers it essential to replace the Audi air filter. Dealership is checking wires to assess any gnawed damage. I need the engine to be power-washed and the nest area treated w/bleaching agents. I do not have the total estimate on this but it will be greater than $1,000.

The power steering on my A4 went out randomly with only 52k miles on the odometer. Thankfully it went out while the car was parked, but if it went out while I was driving it could've caused an accident. I towed it to a shop to diagnose the issue and they confirmed that the power steering rack went bad. While doing research I found that Audi extended the warranty on the steering racks for 2013-2016 model year A4s. The part number for the 2016 steering rack is shared with the 2017 steering rack as well, which means audi should've included the 2017 model year with that extended warranty.

My 2017 Audi A4 transmission started to fail as it frequently was not able to shift gears unless I came to a complete stop and restarted my car. This made it difficult to drive at a higher speed when I was on a major road or highway. I took it to a mechanic specializing in transmissions and he confirmed that the transmission was failing. The car would give me an indicator light of a transmission malfunction. I find it ridiculous that my cars transmission would go out around 5 yrs/60,000 miles. Since the pandemic, it hasn’t been driven a whole lot as I’ve worked from home.

While dropping off a passenger at a store front during a rain storm and a few seconds after the passenger exited the vehicle the sunroof glass exploded upward spontaneously! Some glass chunks flew out of the car and then gravity pulled the rest back down inside onto me and scattered around the interior in tiny little shards. Fortunately I was wearing a jacket and nothing got in my hair or on my face so I was able to brush off all debris. My passenger was already outside the car so she was safe. The insurance claim adjuster inspected the damage and it they will cover the repair. My local Audi dealer will be doing the repair. There was no warning of the problem. The glass was in perfect condition prior to this so I am not sure how it could just happen all of the sudden. I am shocked that the glass does not have the plastic layer to prevent shattering when used overhead like this. I just wanted to report it so someone knows it and can try to prevent it from happening again.

But the seatbelt sign keeps showing up with the beeping sound, and the sign says Safety System Malfunction with front airbags off.... I called the Audi Fletcher Jones dealership in Irvine, California, the service team told me that they don't have the part to help fix this recall and there is nothing they can do. They also would not tell me when this recall can be fixed. I called a few other dealership in Orange County, California, seems none of the dealership has the parts to fix this. ODI #11457955VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMCRASH

I have been an Audi A4 owner for more than 10 years. During that time, I have had 2 incidents where I could have easily been killed as well as injured or killed passengers in oncoming vehicles. The latest was this morning on March 23, 2022. The other was nearly 10 years ago. My personal investigation has led me to a conclusion that I have not yet seen anywhere else. In both cases, I am trying to get into a heavy flow of traffic. I know that I will have to "gun it" to get up to speed. For that reason, I have one foot on the accelerator and one on the brake. When traffic opens to where I think it is safe to proceed, I press the accelerator while my foot is still on the brake. In the situation this morning, I intended to execute a sharp right turn into the closest lane of a road with 2-lanes going in that direction. I pressed the accelerator hard while turning the steering wheel. Instead of turning right, the car shot across both lanes of traffic, wiped out a traffic sign and entered the lanes of oncoming traffic. I had zero control. It was only dumb luck that I avoided traffic in both directions (both of which were travelling at roughly 60 mph). Even though I knew about this risk from my earlier incident, I didn't think about it at the time. I realize that my actions send conflicting signals to the car (go/don't go), but the last thing the car should do is propel itself forward with no control on the part of the driver. I don't know if this is limited to Audi or the A4, but I wanted to make my experience public to possibly avoid a serious or fatal accident by someone else. It is very avoidable with proper knowledge and attention. I'd be interested in knowing if you have been notified of any other incidents of this type.

My 2017 Audi A4 Quattro is now five years old. There is only 26,000 miles on the vehicle. Mostly local miles. I noticed drops of red fluid on the garage floor under the engine compartment. My mechanic investigated and found the issue to be leaking coolant from the thermostat/pump housing. It is obvious that the leak has been occurring for awhile as there is dried white residue all around this area. The engine cover under the engine compartment was all wet with coolant. The coolant reservoir was also low. The car's information system did not indicate an issue, but I am sure it would have eventually (at probably a very inconvenient time and location ! ). I've noticed several other Audi owners complain about this same issue. This will no doubt be an expensive repair which is totally unacceptable for a car like this with such low mileage.

I went to Audi Fort Worth (116 University Dr, Fort Worth, TX 76107) to fix my PODS recall currently on my Audi A4. After a day of servicing my vehicle for the recall the dealership handed me back my vehicle in the condition attached in the photo. You can see the huge gap in the seat which is a safety hazard considering there is high voltage wires in the seat and they just left it exposed with a considerable gap. They refused to reassemble my seat so I am unsure if my airbag sensors even work now, it has been a week of waiting and my VIN still shows that it has a recall even though the service was completed a week ago. I asked for a service ticket of he work preformed but Audi Fort Worth refused to provide me one. I went in for the recall service on 1/24/2021. Is there any way we can remove my VIN from this recall list since the service was completed? I have messaged the Audi Service manager Veronica about this issue but still no response from her. Even left her an email and voice message. I just would like to file a complaint about this service center, and get my VIN removed from the recall list since the work was performed according to Audi.

It's unacceptable that a luxury car needs such a major repair with few miles (many users are experiencing this well before 40k miles) and if you are out of the original warranty, you're stuck with a $1k+ bill. My car with just about 47k miles on it has been slowly leaking from this part for about a year now and will need to be fixed soon as my coolant level is dropping steadily.

ODI #11434300AIR BAGS,SEATS

The passenger side air bag warning light and/or passenger seat sensor mat has failed 3 times (twice since we've owned the car and once before). We purchased a used 2017 A4 Audi Sedan in October 2019. In early November 2020 the passenger side airbag warning light came on. After adjusting the front passenger seat, the light went off. Thereafter, the light would intermittently go on and off. We took the car to the dealer from whom we bought it - Royal Automotive Group in San Francisco. Their technician tested the car and confirmed a fault code #DTC B1225F1. They found "tsb #2051242/5 for issue and fault" and installed "cable tie per tsb." We continued to drive the car without incident until September 2021when the problem happened again. The passenger side airbag warning light began going on and off intermittently both when the front passenger seat was occupied and when it was not. Since we had moved from San Francisco to Novato, we took the car to Audi Marin. They verified the concern and found fault code P122F51. They confirmed the tsb recommended repair had already been done and told us it was first repaired on August 2, 2019 (before we bought the car) and again in November 2020 when we reported the problem to Royal Automotive Group in San Francisco. Audi Marin's recommended repair is to replace the passenger side seat POD which would cost approximately $2,000. We have been advised that the defective passenger side air bag and/or seat sensor pad constitutes a safety hazard because the airbag system may not work. We have since learned that several Audi models have been recalled for defects in the passenger occupant detection system (PODS). In March of 2021, it was announced Audi is recalling virtually all A3, RS3 and S3 cars built from 2015 to 2020 to address the risk that the PODS may malfunction and turn off the airbag when someone is in the front passenger seat.

I took my car in for a routine check and the dealership noted a potent is coolant /transmission fluid leak. However they said that it could have just been when coolant bubbled over so they decided not to repair anything and to just monitor. The next time I brought my car in my warranty was done and they noted the same issue and told me that I now had a coolant / transmission fluid lead that requires $3,000 to repair. I can clearly see the coolant reservoir tank leaking and upon googling this issue, it looks like a lot of 2017 A4s have the same issue, yet there has been no recall to fix this issue.

Our 2017 A4 suddenly had the passenger airbag warning light illuminate while driving. In addition a different warning stated "safety system malfunction." We took the car to the dealer. They saw that there was a code in the computer but said that this could be "because a wire moved." They claimed it was "fixed" by "restarting" the car. They did no repair despite our protests, and told us to bring it back if it happened again. The next time we drove the car it happened again. We returned to the dealer. They stated the following (1) there is nothing wrong with the car and we should ignore the random intermittent safety light and continue driving; (2) that "probably you won't have a crash during the malfunction, so it should be OK" and "Audi engineering won't pay to fix this under your warranty because "sometimes your seat heater can trigger this warning for no reason if you don't use the seat heater." Audi is refusing to fix this obvious safety error impacting the airbag system.

ODI #11426691TIRES

While driving on Interstate at normal speed the tire pressure light for the driver rear came on. There was no road debris or road hazard material present. On exiting the tire was going flat . The car was placed on the jack and removed and noted tread separation and protruding steel belt wiring . The steel belt wiring protruded through the tread in several places up to several inches away from site of the tread separation and exposed steel belt material . There was probably 10000 miles on this tire. The tire was purchased from the Audi dealer in Charleston , SC. The dealer was 100 % unhelpful in requesting help with having Pirelli inspect this tire for its structural failure. I have had multiple emails with Pirelli and they have been unhelpful with my request for them to examine this tire failure. I feel there is a manufacturing defect that needs to be evaluated . 245/40 R18 97H M+S I have the tire at home for inspection. The photos do not show the protruding steel belt wires well.

While driving on the highway, there was a message that flashed on the dashboard about the coolant system, within a couple minutes, I felt like the car was shutting down while going 65 miles per hour. So I pulled over on the shoulder of the Turnpike Southbound in Miami. This cased a great safety problem for me, as this happened while I was driving on the highway then I had to be on the right shoulder of the highway and had to call for road ranger. When the road ranger came to inspect the car, he tried to add coolant and realized that there was a fuel leak, the car would not start, the coolant drained completely out of the car. I then had to call AAA to get the car towed.

The amber reliability line averaged 57/100 across the vehicle's life — dropping as low as 10 in 2021 when complaint severity peaked.

The red dashed line marks recall issuance — the first recall came 5 years after owners began filing complaints, a lag that indicates the manufacturer was slow to formally acknowledge these problems.

Red dots on the amber line flag 3 years (2016, 2017, 2022) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
