Components and defects approaching or past their known service milestones
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
On 4WD/AWD vehicles, neglected differential or transfer case fluid causes metal-on-metal wear. Replacement costs $1,500–$4,000.
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
One failed component has created stress on connected systems. Repair costs compound quickly — a $500 fix can become $3,000+ if cascade damage is ignored.

My 2022 Kia Seltos out of nowhere started smoking, losing power, total control and braking. There were no lights on the dashboard warning of any kind complete stall than a little bit of power hesitation stall no brakes. I managed to coast it into a parking space at a hotel with it smoking so bad I couldn’t see. It then burst into flames and golfing the entire Engine bay and melting the front of the car about 90 seconds after I got out of the car all of the symptoms here are completely aligned with the recall on this vehicle and the soul. In fact, my son soul had all the same issues except the fire and Kia refused to replace the Engine claiming that his lack of a recent oil change caused the problem that we all see reported here this vehicle was not in the recall VIN group but failed catastrophically just as described in the recall
The engine started to fail when I'm driving and on the highway it suddenly loses strength, the oil goes down and I don't know where it's going, the engine starts to make noises and burning smell, the ignition light turns on and minutes later goes out, a triangle signal also sometimes appears for 6 seconds and disappears, when this triangle appears the car starts to fail and give strong jolts, this has already happened on the highway and I almost lost control of the car due to the jock. I looked for a Kia store on 08/04/25 to recall and reported the problem, they said at the time that there was no vacancy to do the recall service 25v099 mileage 44232, so they managed to meet me only on the date 03/19/26 and said that the car was with the recall problem corrected, but 2 months later the engine power problems, oil lowering, noise and burning smell were intensifying, so today 05/15/25 I looked again the KIA 11295 Rosevelt blvd store and they informed that I could not do the service because the vehicle was no longer in the warranty of up to 60000 miles, but when I took the car to the store it was with 44000 miles and in addition to scheduling months later something that puts my life at risk, they simply told me that in the recall was fixed, but the problem that appears today from what I researched are characteristics of the errors caused by this problem and that at the time of the recall they did not
The contact owns a 2022 Kia Seltos. The contact stated that the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was able to be restarted, but the vehicle was jerking while driving. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 84,000.
Engine issue - unknown excessive oil consumption. I started the car to drive to work and immediately it had a very rough idle. I turned the car off and checked the oil level. The car was on a level surface and the oil level was below the acceptable range on the dipstick. It has been about 4000 miles since my last oil change (around 82000 miles) and I noticed the engine was consuming oil about 2500 miles after that oil change. I added a quart of oil to bring the level back within the dipstick’s acceptable range. Throughout all of this, there have been no puddles to indicate a leak, no smoke to indicate oil burning, and no “Low Oil” warning light. I took the car to a Kia dealership in August 2025 for a piston ring recall inspection, and I was told there was nothing wrong with my car. At the time, there was nothing noticeably wrong with my car. I now wonder if the inspection properly assessed the issue. After looking on the Internet, high oil consumption seems like a common issue with my engine that persists even after Kia’s recall inspection. There was no immediate threat to my safety this morning, but I am concerned that this excessive oil consumption could cause catastrophic engine failure before an owner has a reasonable expectation to check the oil level between service intervals.
Took my car in for oil piston recall. H&H KIA advised my oil level was low. I advised oil change just done 1/16/2026 and under the 6 month/7500 mile oil change recommendation. I provided screenshot that show it could indicate problem related to recall. Dealership did inspection and did advise no oil leak. When I asked about this they advised I had to pay for an engine clean and also an oil test. I questioned why should I have to pay if related to recall. They quickly said the recall was fixed by software update. When I asked again about low level of oil readings the answer was recommending the engine clean. Oil change totaling more than 300.00 . I fear my safety now driving my car due to this which in turn is causing a high amount of uneasiness and anxiety.
I was driving and my car halted to a complete stop.
Car is throwing a P1327 error code which aligns with this recall: 25V099. However, my VIN is not included in the recall despite being a 2022 Kia Seltos.
Certified shop said my timing chain was going as well as other associated components. My car is always low on oil even when mileage has not been met. Found my car is part of piston ring recall. Dealership stated my car is not affected however the issues the shop found most certainly confirm my issue which is going to cost over $2k to fix is associated with this. Dealership not only says my car passed piston ring recall but wanted $175 to diagnose what has already been diagnosed and then another $175 on top of that to "dig into the engine". Check engine light came on and car began making noise and not running properly on 2/7/2026 on 2/9/2026 called independent service center and car was checked out and diagnosed on 2/11/2026. Found out this is likely recall related 2/12/2026. Car was looked at by dealership on 2/17/2026 and I was told the aforementioned. However magically the two other recalls on this vehicle were remedied but not this one.
Purchased my 2022 Kia Seltos new from my local dealership and stayed up to date with all scheduled service, as well as all manufacturer recalls and software updates. When driving it in January 2025, I experienced loss of power when accelerating and an engine stall. Took it to the dealer the same day and was told the vehicle was out of oil, and this caused engine damage that would not be covered by my warranty (I have approximately 44,000 miles on the car). Never had any kind of warning signs — no check engine light or any dashboard alerts. Also never had any issues with oil levels between regular oil changes at the dealership. Luckily, I’d not been driving in particularly heavy traffic when the issue emerged, or else could’ve caused an accident. And luckily I took it to the dealer when I did to prevent a more catastrophic engine failure. Seems to have burned through a ridiculous amount of oil in a relatively short period of time while giving no warning signs that it was doing so.
I purchased this 2022 Kia Seltos on [XXX] from Serra Nissan Volkswagen Inc, Birmingham. One week afterwards my vehicle cut off at the light while waiting for light to change....This incident has occurred more than 10 x since then. My vehicle have over a 100,000 miles on it which does not qualify for Kia yo check it out. I will be taking my vehicle to get a service check. My Seltos transmission heats up to such an extent that I have to get out of the car and park it for 45 minutes to have it cooled down. Has only 25k miles in it. Took to the dealership and they say nothing is wrong. Numerous reported issues of the same kind on Kia message boards regarding the same issue. Something to do with the dual clutch system and start/stop function
My 2022 KIA Seltos with 52000 miles shut down on me completely in the middle of a road while I was going full speed limit causing the car behind me promptly to change lanes to avoid the collision. It happened 2 more times until I got to my destination l. After I googled what could cause the issue I saw the recall info which I didn’t get any notification about. I brought my car to a dealership and they told me that it passed the recall but I have to replace the whole engine because they found metal filings in the oil. They are refusing to do it under warranty or recall because I cannot produce oil change receipts since January of 2025. I was under the impression that recalls need to be fixed but they denying that it is a recall even though it is to a tee follows the description of a recall.
My vehicle was sent to the Kia dealership for service after a front-end collision there was minor body damage however the car wouldn't move so long story short a modular had to be replaced on the transmission there was multiple issues trying to program it I was told there was an issue with my computer they had to reach out to Kia manufacturer for help. I received my car back and while it was there for service I had them do an oil change I hadn't drove 300 to 400 miles and all of my oil was gone from my car when I called Kia they had me bring it back in couldn't find anything wrong with it and said they want to do a oil consumption after I had already documented oil that I had to put into the car three times in the week up until my appointment because every time I check the car it was empty of oil. Now Kia is telling me to drive a thousand miles on it so they can do an oil consumption however my check engine lights on my oil lights on and it is clearly burning extremely high amount of oil. So in caution of not blowing my engine I added oil to my car yesterday one quart and now my oil light is back on after maybe 20 miles of driving. Haven't gotten to 400 mi yet total out of the thousand Kia wants me to drive and my car has stalled at three red lights and cause me to miss out on two job opportunities. My car is a 2022 and has 62,000 miles on it. Everything I research shows there's piston recalls on the engines that are causing these exact problems that my car is having except there hasn't been a recall put into place for my specific year and make. The 2021 and the 2023 Seltos are listed, but my VIN number shows no recalls. The car has a horrible smell now it constantly smells like burning rubber or oil rather, exhaust stinks now. Car is not performing as you would expect a car would with that low of mileage in less than 3 years of ownership. And related to my accident the only issue was the modular on the transmission according to the mechanics everything else was ok
My 2022 Kia Seltos repeatedly stalls and shuts off while driving, including in traffic and at stop signs. The vehicle has also had multiple electrical failures and an emergency brake malfunction. A few weeks ago, October 26th, while going through a Starbucks drive-through, My car completely stopped. I got stuck in the Starbucks line and multiple people had to help me push my car out of the drive through. I can get the name of the lady at the Starbucks and maybe her co-workers to collaborate if need be plus I have text messages with my family because I didn't know what to do. The vehicle has now been at Covina Kia for three weeks, and the dealership has refused to provide a diagnosis, repair timeline, or loaner vehicle. I called today to get an update and was told to expect a response or diagnostics in approximately 10 days. They won't even give me a rental car and I'm stranded without transportation. This is a serious safety hazard that could cause a crash. I am requesting NHTSA investigation and documentation of this defect.”
This vehicle passed the piston oil ring recall in September 2025, by November 2025 the vehicle was burning through a quart of oil a week. Two different dealerships advised that this wouldn't be covered under the recall, stating the recall was for engine noise. The recall states that the issue in question can cause increased oil consumption that will then lead to noise. The vehicle was 5,000 miles out of warrenty
[XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] 2022 Kia Seltos [XXX] 54,000 mileage I am reporting two serious safety defects with my 2022 Kia Seltos: Engine Shut Off / “Push Engine to Start” Warning: Date(s) of occurrence:[XXX] Location: Throughout Portland, OR Description: While slowing down and stopping at intersections, the vehicle starts beeping very fast, then displays the “Push Engine to Start” warning, and then shuts off completely, creating a high risk of collision. Cruise Control Unintended Acceleration: Date(s) of occurrence: [XXX] Location: Throughout Charleston, SC and Charlotte, NC Description: While cruise control was engaged, the vehicle accelerated without any driver input. This happens infrequently. On two occasions, I was on straight open roads and watched to see how fast the speed would increase - 80 mph and 100 mph. I used the brakes to stop the increase in speed. This is a severe safety hazard. The transmission stutters at low speeds, causing the car to lurch: Ongoing issue - a few times a month since purchasing the car. Previous Claims / Service History: I have previously filed a warranty claim for other issues with this vehicle. The current issues have been reported to the dealership but have not yet been repaired or reproduced. Additional Information: No video evidence is available, as the events are intermittent and stop before a camera can capture them. I am concerned for my safety, the safety of passengers, and the safety of other drivers. Action Requested: I request that NHTSA review this complaint for potential safety investigation and recall consideration. While at red lights, my car shuts off. It happened within the first year I had my car but Scott Kia in Springfield, PA 19064 said "we can't duplicate the problem" and did nothing. Now this has happened 3 times within 3 weeks. This morning, it took several minutes and many tries before it restarted; I had to put it in park and hit the start button many times before the engine restarted. A few times, the dashboard would light up, but then go off and engine didn't engage. There have not been any warning lights. I am taking it to my mechanic, then Kia, again. Prior to this, it would turn off in drive, then reverse. I did report this to Kia (not Springfield, the main Kia) but nothing was done.
The contact owns a 2022 Kia Seltos. The contact stated that while driving on the highway at 55 MPH, they crashed into a buck. The hood came ajar and shattered the front windshield. The front end was smashed, and the radiator was leaking. The airbags did not deploy. A police report was filed. There was no reported fire. The contact sustained injuries to her neck with spasms and reversed neck and back pain; medical attention was provided. The collision alert was illuminated. The collision message was displayed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. The towing company referred her to the NHTSA hotline. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
When the car goes 75-80mph on the highway, there is a metallic "ticking" noise coming from the front two sides of the car, around the area where the tires are. KIA is refusing to do anything about it because they claim they cannot drive the car that fast due to speed limits. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? --unknown How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? It is unknown what is causing the issue since KIA is refusing to look further into the issue. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? - There is audio and video recording of the noise. However, the dealer is refusing to reproduce the issue. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? - No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? - No
Engine failure while driving. Car not accelerating. Check engine light came on. Pulled over, checked oil, found to be very low without evidence of leak. Oil should’ve not been that low, seemed to be burning up. Car towed to nearest auto shop for inspection/repair.
My car was part of the piston ring recall. It burns over half a quart of oil per 1,000 miles. When I took the car in for the recall inspection, it was deemed that it needed a new engine. They then called me and told me that they “revised” the test, and it no longer would be getting a new engine. The car is still burning oil and makes a ticking sound. The recall issue was not resolved, and my car still has the symptoms relating to the piston rings being faulty. Kia did not fulfill their duty of the recall.
My engine failed while i was driving on a busy street almost causing cars to hit me there were no warning signs about the engine, my battery also died as well that is the only sign that appeared.
My car was part of the original Kia engine recall for 2021-2023 Seltos'. At the initial appointment I was told that my car had failed the test and would require a new engine. Then I was called and told that Kia had issued an update on the recall and that I would have to bring it in for a different test. I called Kia's corporate office and was told on the phone by them (the guy refused to give me his name) that even if my car did fail a second time that it was hard telling when it could be fixed because they didn't have the engines to replace them with and they were on back order. Then I was told that my car had magically passed the second test. I maintained that I disagreed with them because my car still has issues going uphill and when you pull out it feels like all the power drains. They informed me that they disagreed and the technician had test driven it and didn't have any issues. They tried to coerce me into saying that it was fixed. Kia even contacted me multiple times trying to get me to "agree" that my car was fixed and I refused to answer their calls anymore. I do not agree that my car is fixed and I feel that they are just trying to rip people off.
I own a 2022 Kia Seltos that has experienced a persistent coolant leak. I’ve brought the vehicle in multiple times, but each time I was told the issue couldn’t be duplicated. The coolant reservoir was consistently dropping week after week. Dealership had even marked the reservoir with a line for tracking purposes. Despite keeping the vehicle for several days, the technicians were still unable to locate the source of the leak. I was then informed that any further diagnostic work would incur a service charge. When I expressed concern about this, Mark responded by saying, “The mechanics do not work for free.” Before I picked up the car, Dealership called to let me know a technician had accidentally broken a part, which they replaced. He stated the broken part was unrelated and that the original issue still had not been identified. I retrieved the vehicle and, interestingly enough, for over a year afterward, the coolant level remained stable. After this I contacted KIA corporation and I was advised they could not help in the matter and I'm have to work with the dealership. While changing the oil on [XXX]—roughly three months since I last checked the reservoir—I noticed the coolant level had dropped again, below the “low” mark. I refilled it to avoid potential damage, but it appears the original issue has returned. Ive notified the dealership on 6/19/2025 the issues has returned, I haven't heard back from as of today. The vehicle is still under it's 100K mile warranty and I need help getting KIA to honor it's warranty and not force me to pay for diagnoses. I'm being told this should fall under the lemon law and get a lawyer. I'd rather not go this route , as it's still forcing me to spend money. The contact owns a 2022 Kia Seltos. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V099000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the contact had scheduled a recall appointment and was advised by the dealer that the recall had been placed on hold. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and advised the contact that the recall was on hold. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 MPH and ascending a hill, the vehicle hesitated while depressing the accelerator pedal, and failed to respond as needed. Additionally, the contact stated that vehicle was making abnormal knocking sounds while the vehicle was stopped and idling. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle had not been diagnosed by the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
Vehicle went into dealer for safety recall on 4/15. I was notified on 4/16 that my vehicle failed the test and would need a new engine. I was given a rental car. They were unsure of time frame. Later found out that recall had been placed on hold. 5/13 contacted that new test protocol had been released and my car passed under new testing. No engine would be needed. I asked for documentation of both tests the fail and the pass. I was told they are unable to print this out for me as it all goes into the Kia database. No reasonable explanation was given as to what changed that made my vehicle pass, when it previously failed. This feels incredibly suspicious. Now I am just driving around in this car that may or may not have a problem, and the value of the vehicle could be effected, should i wish to get rid of it. I do not feel this was handled appropriately.
The contact owns a 2022 Kia Seltos. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle shut off without warning. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to the dealer where an unknown sensor was replaced; however, the failure returned soon after the repair. The contact then received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V099000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The contact informed the dealer of the recall, and the dealer acknowledged the recall and that the piston oil rings had failed; however, the dealer informed the contact that the manufacturer had ordered the dealer not to perform the recall repair. The vehicle remained in the possession of the dealer. The contact was recently informed that the vehicle needed to be picked up from the dealer location because the part to do the recall repair was not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
I have called 2 dealers to schedule an appointment to get this major safety recall completed. Neither one is responsive. I called another and they told me that Kia put out a remedy, but that remedy was unsuccessful, so there is NO fix at the current time and KIA will notify me at a later time when another remedy is put out, then I'll have to call and schedule an appointment. This is my ONLY vehicle that I am paying a car note on. I HAVE to drive it while thinking about and risking it bursting into flames or causing me to crash. This is terrifying. I don't know what to do.

2022 KIA SELTOS S AWD [XXX]- ENGINE FAILED, PISTON SCORING, PISTON OIL RING FAILED, OIL BURNING, KNOCKING IN ENGINE. THIS KIA'S VIN NUMBER IS PART OF THE KIA RECALL THAT WAS PUBLISHED 2/17/25 AND ANNOUNCED TO CONSUMERS VIA MAIL ON 4/4/25. My [XXX] daughter & I purchased a used 2022 Kia Seltos on [XXX] Mileage at time of purchase was little bit under 60,000 miles. On [XXX], while on vacation in Florida, my daughter noticed sluggish acceleration, smoke coming from exhaust and some from hood, a knocking sound from engine and then engine then seized in the middle of the road. If they wouldn't have stopped, this engine would've started on FIRE! This event caused SIGNIFICANT DANGER to my young daughter and her 3 passengers! My daughter and her friends had to push the vehicle back to a safe location off the road so they didn't get hit by a car. We are from Wisconsin and these kids were stranded in Florida on vacation without a vehicle. We had to have the vehicle towed to a Kia dealership in Panama City, FL on 3/28/25. Inspected and RECALL testing done by Kia in Panama City, FL. It is now 5/2/25 and we are STILL WAITING FOR KIA TO APPROVE A NEW ENGINE FROM THIS RECALL. NO ONE WILL GIVE US ANY UPDATES. These 2022 Kia Seltos engines are a complete danger! Engine needs to be REPLACED ASAP INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I took my Kia to Moritz Kia Alliance, Keller TX on 4/24/25 for the current recall and letting them know that my vehicle has experienced issues outlined in the recall notice (almost all of the oil was burned and we had to add a quart to get it to the dealership, car has lost power while driving, car has stalled). They tested in 4/25/25 and called to let me know that it failed the test and would require a new engine. I called on 4/29 to inquire about a loaner vehicle and the dealership notified me that KIA halted the test due to software issues and I was required to pick up my vehicle. I messaged KIA customer service who advised that the new software would be available 5/1. I did not pick up my car due to the issues I had experienced and did not feel safe driving it. Today 5/2 the dealership said that the second test failed but KIA has halted testing for a second time stating software issues. The dealership has had no concern for the safety of my vehicle and KIA appears to be halting testing and requiring individuals to drive these vehicles exhibiting potential recall related issues with no concern for the general public.
RECIEVED A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL EARLY APRIL 2025, SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE RECALL OF MY SELTOS AT THE WESTSIDE KIA DEALERSHIP IN KATY TX ON APRIL 14TH 2025 THE VEHICLE WAS DROPPED OFF. APRIL 16TH THEY UPDATED ME STATING THAT THE ENGINGE AND PISTON RINGS AT FAILED THE INSPECTION AND A FULL ENGINE REPLACEMENT WOULD BE NEEDED SO THEY ORDERED IT BUT SAID THERE WAS NO ETA ON WHEN IT WOULD BE COMPLETED. KIA CUSTOMER CARE SAID THE SAME THING, BOTH KIA CUSTOMER CARE AND THE DEALRSHIP SAID THAT THE CAR COULD NOT BE PICKED UP BECAUSE THE RECALL COULD CAUSE COMPLETE ENGINGE FAILURE, FIRE, OR COULD CAUSE YOU TO CRASH. TODAY 5/1/25 I AM BEING TOLD THE RECALL IS ON HOLD EVEN THOUGH MY VEHICLE HAS FAILED THE INSPECTION THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE REPLACING THE ENGINE RIGHT NOW AND I AM BEING TOLD TO PICK IT BACK UP DESPITE IT NOT BEING FIXED. I INFORMED THEM AGAIN OF WHAT THE RECALL STATES AND THE SAFETY RISK AND KIA CUSTOMER CARE SAID I AM NOT OBLIGATED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE BUT DUE TO THE RECALL BEING ON HOLD I NEED TO PICK IT UP AND I NO LONGER QUALIFY FOR RENTAL REIMBURSEMENT. PRIOR TO ME TAKING MY VEHICLE IN I WAS GOING THROUGH OIL MORE FREQUENTLY AND MY MPG DROPPED SIGNIFICANTLY.
The contact owns a 2022 Kia Seltos. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V099000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the dealer informed the contact that the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The engine keeps stalling and there’s a recall on the engines and I had to wait a month for dealership to say the recall isn’t the problem! How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I drive on the highway and busy street and my car will just stop or make smoke for oil reserve. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes the number Ted that they hear the noises on my car. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? 2 months ago I started hearing a grinding noise, oil light came on irregular from oil consumption and metal shards in oil.
My Kia Seltos has a recall on the engine because the piston rings leak oil. My car is now losing massive amounts of oil and has damaged my engine. I brought car to dealership and they wanted me to go through my warranty and refused to honor the recall and kicked me out.
ENGINE SEIZED WHILE DRIVING ON VACATION IN FLORIDA. PUT THE DRIVER AND 3 PASSENGERS AT MAJOR RISK FOR AN ACCIDENT AND/OR FIRE! HAD TO PUSH VEHICLE BACK TO A SAFE SPOT. HAD NOTICED SLUGGISH ACCELERATION ON AND OFF AND SOME SMOKE COMING FROM EXHAUST, ENGINE KNOCKING WAS VERY PRESENT, OIL LOOKED DIRTY AND GRITTY. NOTICED THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS KIA- ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED DUE TO THIS RECALL ASAP. WE HAD TO PAY FOR PLANE TICKETS TO GET ALL 4 PEOPLE BACK HOME TO WISCONSIN, HAD TO PAY FOR TRANSPORTATION BACK AND FORTH, LOST OUT ON DAYS OF VACATION, HAD TO HAVE THIS VEHICLE TOWED TO KIA IN PANAMA CITY, FL AND WILL NOW HAVE TO HAVE IT SHIPPED BACK TO WISCONSIN, WE WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR A RENTAL VEHICLE WHILE THIS IS INSPECTED AND FIXED. KIA SHOULD REIMBURSE OR PAY FOR ALL OF THESE THINGS! MY DAUGHTER AND HER FRIENDS WERE STRANDED IN ANOTHER STATE DUE TO THIS BAD ENGINE AT ONLY 60,800 MILES!
My 2022 Kia Seltos engine seized and Kia refused to fix the problem. This engine has a safety recall related to the engine and the manufacturer refuses to change the seized engine. We had to pay almost $6000 from our pocket to replace the engine as we need the car to go to work.
The contact owns a 2022 Kia Seltos. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle or while accelerating, there was an abnormal amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust, with droplets of oil. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed and the contact was informed that the piston rings had failed due to oil build-up and the accumulation of moisture inside of the cylinders and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V099000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING); as the possible cause for the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 64,000.

I bought this car for my daughter during her second year at IU Bloomington, IN. She called in a panic, saying the car hesitated and stopped. She also shared if she turns car off, the car will restart. I advised her to take it to the nearby KIA dealership for inspection. The mechanic, after a test drive, reported no issues and found no error codes using an OBD-II scanner. When my daughter returned home, I took the car for a test drive and noticed a clicking noise. I checked the oil and added three quarts of Valvoline full synthetic oil 0W-20. I'm disappointed with how she was treated at the dealership. I've learned that adding an oil additive every 1,000 miles is recommended for this common problem. Now that the car has 60,000 miles, the cost of oil is significant, and I won't be repurchasing a KIA. I also feel guilty about trading in this car and possibly passing on issues to another owner. I'm reporting this now due to the added costs and worry that others might not share their experiences.
My car horn won’t work consistently. Works sometimes and other times not at all. Please help and let me know if there’s a recall for the horns because there should be always been like this. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I was stopped in traffic for about 40 minutes and the over heating transmission came on. warnned to pull over and wait to cool off.
The contact owns a 2022 Kia Seltos. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed with the Navigation system activated, the instrumental panel started behaving erratically and failed to display pertinent vehicle safety information, prompting the contact to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway to turn the vehicle off. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The contact stated that several warning lights were illuminated and flashing. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was able to duplicate the failure but was unable to provide a cause for the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 30,000.
A few months ago noise was coming from the engine. I could not find the noise so I just happened to check the oil level and it was down 3 quarts of oil. I put the 3 quarts of oil in and the noise stopped. Now it down almost another quart. I went to Taca Kia and talk to a lady that works in service told me it was normal for the SUV to burn a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. I never heard of a new car burning oil that much. I Heard that Kia put the wrong oil ring in some makes a models.
This is a problem that has occurred in several Kia models. While driving all of a sudden all the warning lights from every safety related item come on and at the same time the power steering goes off as well as the air conditioner. Sometimes if you stop the car and restart the engine everything returns to normal other times it does not and occasionally the shifter locks itself in park. I have taken it to the Kia dealer twice and they "repaired" it one time and the problem continued. The second time no problem codes were shown in the OBD and they said there was nothing they could do. We have limited our driving this car because it is a ticking time bomb. A quick look at the Seltos forum shows that many owners have reported this problem. Please go to this link below. Engine is burning excessive oil have to add a quart every 3000 miles
A flapping sound started in the engine, then no acceleration when I used the gas pedal. Pulled to the side of the road and black smoke and sparks began coming from the engine. I exited the car and it burst into flames. The was no warning icons that appeared to alert me to any problems. Car was total ingulfed.
Tried to remote start vehicle and it would not work. Went and manually started car so it could warm up and returned to house. Went back outside and car was backed into a ditch with all warning lights illuminated on dash.
On June 10, 2023 I was driving and in stop and go traffic. My 2022 Kia Seltos transmission over heated. I pulled over, let it cool, and cautiously drove home. I made an appointment with the dealership I purchased the car from and requested that they inspect the transmission and explained what happened. This is when I was informed that my vehicle had a "design flaw" in the dual clutch system and that if I did not put my vehicle in park or neutral while on stop and go traffic, my vehicle would overheat. I was given the all clear, but a month later I had to have my car towed to the dealership for further transmission issues.
NO ACCIDENT HAS OCCURRED AT THIS TIME. I AM JUST REPORTING WHAT I CONSIDER A SAFETY HAZARD DRIVING CONDITION. The push buttons for hill control and all wheel lock are on the wrong side of the console for the shifter handle. They cannot be seen without taking eyes off of the road and leaning around the shifter handle. It's like this set-up was designed for foreign designed KIAS where the driver is on the opposite side from American drivers. There are empty button positions on the driver's side of the shifter console that can accommodate these control buttons and eliminate the AMERICAN driver from removing their eyes for an extended amount of time to see which buttons they need to use.
Vehicle stalled and shut completely off then back on. Vehicle shut down during an attempted left turn almost causing deadly collision with oncoming traffic. Vehicle completely a hard break, shut off then back on in the middle of a left turn.
Summary: Failure of Vision system causes unpredictable computer behavior, and such failure may not be known by vehicle operator. 3 Separate Incidents on same car . Occurance 1, 10/22: Brakes locked (with smoke) and stalled in heavy traffic; fortunately traveling only 5MPH so no accident. Restart allowed car to run, although rough. NOTE: Front collision Avoidance turned OFF but computer reset system anyway on camera failure. Kia towed to nearest dealer, admitting that it is NOT SAFE to drive. Once computer went blind, the front vision system reset defaults-including braking control. The Camera system was replaced, seamingly fixing situation. *Occurance 2, 12/29/22 HOA cruise control set at 65, traffic moving 50- car started to accelerate, not seeing car in advance. Braking put up a dashboard message "HOA Disabled, Radar blocked", then "Conditions not met, radar blocked". I also discovered that Front Collision Avoidance was not functional. NOTE THERE IS NO CONSISTANT WARNING TO OPERATOR, only periodically, a "FCA disabled, Radar Blocked" message appeared, but would disappear within 5-10 minutes (but system was still offline). visit 1, 1/10 > No problem found, reset default settings visit 2, 1/17 > took back to dealer again- problem replicated, camera ordered visit 3, 1/24 > vehicle dropped off for camera replacement *Occurance 3, 1/24, System failed on test drive after repair. Dealer did not provide details. Dealer arranged rental "This car is not safe to drive"
We purchased a new factory 2022 Kia Seltos for our child, because of its 6 standard airbags and its other safety features. Our child was in a vehicle accident on Black Friday were he hit his head and suffered a severe head concussion. It was a frontal crash and none of the airbags deployed. Because of this our son could not complete his Firsts Semester of College and had to take an “Incomplete”. Before the accident there were no malfunction warnings, and we received nothing from his Kia App stating nothing wrong with his vehicle. As a matter of fact, the cops, ambulance and Tow Driver were all shocked that his airbag did not deploy. Our insurance company had the car towed to its collision center so they could review the extent of the damages. The insurance and collision center deemed the vehicle a total loss because the vehicle was over the 75% threshold to be repaired. The vehicle was totaled because it had a frontal bent frame, no front bumper, headlights, sensors, radiator etc. We did report the accident and findings from our insurance company to Kia America and the Dealership where we purchased the vehicle; but they seemed not to care.
I had a flat tire and replaced it with the spare tire that came with the car. Because the vehicle is AWD, the tires need to be the same size, however, the spare tire was smaller. As a result, the car started smoking and driving very rough within 10 miles of the spare being put on. It turns out that the differential went out because the spare tire was rotating faster than the others.
My engine is malfunctioning. My safety has been at risk when I am driving on the highway 50 miles per hour and it just shut off, when turning the steering wheel to make a turn, the car will shut off and it has shut off while waiting at a red light. However, It will start back up after I switch the gauge into park and restart the car. I have taken my vehicle in to the Kia dealership, and they have taken pictures of the engine, to have it evaluated by the KIA headquarters. I am currently waiting for approval to change the engine to a new one.
Car is giving codes C162604/ C164202 stating there is an issue with the electric stability control as well as lane keeping assistance. Emergency break lines came on (abs) as well. There was no incidents before this happened. This was a previous issue with the 2021 Kia Seltos that may have not been addressed properly while making the 2022. I am unsure if I am able to drive the vehicle safely to the dealership due to the stability control issue.
I purchased the vehicle for my daughter. Two times now she has had the power (to the steering, brakes...) and the engine fully shut off when she stopped at a traffic light. A message popped up on her screen that said "battery discharge warning." She was not able to get the car to restart for 20 min. A dangerous situation at a busy intersection. The first time she took the car into the dealer and they could not find any problems. The second time the dealer didn't ever call her back, so I though I would share the problem with the NHTSA. The problem first occurred on June 11th and then again in July.
The contact owns a 2022 Kia Seltos. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled without warning. Upon restart of the vehicle, the vehicle would enter into limp mode as the vehicle would fail to accelerate above 40 MPH with the accelerator pedal depressed to the floorboard. The vehicle was taken to a dealer but was not yet diagnosed. The contact made multiple attempts to reach the manufacturer; however, each attempt was unsuccessful. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 2,000.
The backup camera has failed twice in two months. When vehicle was put in reverse the camera would flash off and on and stated no signal for the backup camera. The problem clears when next trip is made. Dealer said they are not aware of this problem and cannot diagnose unless it is happening. This is a fairly common problem as a number of others have reported this on the Facebook Seltos owner's page. This creates a hazard when in reverse.
I would like to express that in December 11 they gave me the vehicle at the car dealer and I had not been driving for even 20 minutes, when I heard a noise and looked and my glass had shattered. I turned to the dealer and they replaced him on March 11. Today April 21st I am driving on the highway with no car near me and I come back I hear a noise and I look and again my glass is broken. It is incredible that it is already twice in less than 5 months that in different scenarios that the glass shatters. I am very worried and I fear that in an accident my glass will not be strong enough.
Sunroof exploded while driving for no apparent reason. Shade was open but the actual sunroof was in closed position. Car has less than 3,000 Miles. Its brand new. I heard a terrible explosion suddenly and was startled. I was driving alone in the car. At first I thoght it was something near by. Then I looked up and saw that the entire sunroof was shattered, glass all over the passenger seat and flying into the rear seat. Part of the sunroof glass was still in tack, bowing outward. I was able to drive to the Auto Body Shop that KIA dealership recommended. They said they had never seen anything like this before and that it did not appear to be an obstacle that hit the sunroof from the outside, rather an explosion from within causing the glass to bow outward (what was left of the glass). My insurance company was notified and we are in process of ordering a new glass sunroof. I did some research on the web while at body shop and found out this kind of thing happened before to different models of KIA. The body shop applied some protective plastic to the top of car so I could drive it. They also noticed the glass had left scratches on top of the car and in the hatch back of car. I then drove to the KIA dealership where I had just purchased the car and talked with them. They told me to contact the service manager the next day and ask him to call a KIA REP to have that person inspect the car. The Auto Body Shop took 22 pictures of the car. I also filed a Police Report on-line. I am horrified by this experience and angry that this type of incident has apparently gone on for years with not only KIA cars but other cars with sunroofs exploding as well. I will keep pursing this with the KIA dealership and a KIA REP as well since why should my personal insurance company pay for this when KIA should take some responsibility. I am just glad that I was not injured physically.
wireless CarPlay suddenly disconnects leaving drivers unable to use the navigation system and audio including music, call, navigation instructions, maps, and other features. This is a potential hazard for drivers who depend of navigation systems in an unfamiliar environment. Also, propose a potential risk because the driver may be distracted trying to fix the connectivity issue while driving exposing them and other drivers near to a car crash. I bought a brand new 2022 Kia Seltos a month and a half ago at Monroeville Kia dealership. On December 11, the car started manifesting a transmission temperature overheating problem in the middle of traffic. Once the transmission overheated, the engine lost power. I was driving in busy traffic and had to pull the car over to allow the engine to cool down. The police came over and made me start driving my car again, indicating that I could not pull over in such busy traffic. This is a major risk to my safety and can potentially cause a car accident. I reported this case to Kia Manufacturer and I opened a case. The case number is 14537410. The manufacturer told me to have the dealership evaluate the car. The dealership evaluated the car and said “This is a known defect and, per Kia’s engineers, there is nothing they could do to fix the car.” I need reliable vehicle, especially because my job requires me to travel. I am concerned that this issue will continue to manifest and will likely cause a serious accident. I am filing this case because I need arbitration and I need this issue to be fixed or i need a refund.
Component Failure Cascade Risk
Known patterns where one defect leads to more severe downstream failures
▸ Valve and piston damage — timing chain/belt failure causes immediate catastrophic engine damage at any speed
Complaint & Reliability Timeline
Annual complaints (blue) vs. composite reliability score (amber) — recall years marked in red
The blue line shows 66 total NHTSA complaints filed over 6 years, with the worst year being 2025 (33 complaints, including 2 crash reports).
The amber reliability line is declining — recent years score around 31/100, lower than earlier in the vehicle's life. This pattern indicates issues are accumulating over time rather than being resolved, which is a concern for used buyers.
Notably, despite 66 complaints on file, no recall has been issued — either the defect pattern has not met NHTSA's threshold for a formal campaign, or a recall may be forthcoming.
Red dots on the amber line flag 3 years (2023, 2025, 2026) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
