Battery Management System completely exhausting the 12V battery resulting in the car acting as if it has no power. When this happens, you can't unlock the door or open the trunk. On two separate occasions, I have encountered a complete loss of power in my Sonata Hybrid, preventing me from unlocking the trunk or doors upon returning from extended trips. The first incident occurred after a ten-day absence last Fall, and the most recent was on Saturday, March 14, 2025. During the latest incident, I returned from a seven-day trip and found my vehicle parked at Orlando International Airport. Upon approaching the car, I anticipated being able to unlock the trunk, load my luggage, enter the vehicle, and drive home. However, once again, the vehicle was unresponsive. Accessing the car required removing the cap from the door handle and manually inserting the key, a process that took approximately ten minutes, which was particularly inconvenient and concerning in an airport parking lot. This situation was even more challenging considering I am a [XXX] woman of smaller stature attempting to resolve this issue alone at night. I believe this poses a serious safety concern for all owners under similar circumstances. Following the incident last Fall, I brought my Sonata Hybrid to Key Hyundai in Jacksonville. I was informed that this is a known issue for which there is a recall; however, my vehicle model year is not included in the affected range. It was suggested that I would need to manage this problem independently. I believe this recurring issue represents a known vulnerability that could potentially expose Hyundai and its dealerships to liability should an owner suffer harm while addressing this malfunction. Reported this previously, but more information was gathered, thanks to collision mechanic who guessed immediately when he heard 2023 hybrid Sonata - he said "they're notorious for it." Was at a stand still in a parking space/lot I know well. Cautious driver, watch my speed, very aware of other drivers, quick reaction time. Incident mid day, no pedestrians, distractions, no moving traffic. Vehicle doors shut, seat belt on. Not on incline. Pulled into parking spot I use weekly, spot has parking curb. Was at a full stop. Realized I had not pulled into the spot quite far enough, and attempted to inch vehicle forward. (Do not recall any warning lights, but this car usually alerts at literally anything - even shadows.) Very lightly applied gas to inch forward, slowly. Felt slight "scrape" of undercarriage on the parking curb. Put car in reverse, lightly applied gas to inch back. Car did not rev, no screeching tires, it was at a standstill previously. Was in Eco mode. All seemed normal, until vehicle suddenly launched UP the parking curb, full force, and into a building pillar directly ahead. The car never moves with that much force, I'm not a pedal-to-the metal driver. Eco mode on. No airbag deployment, injuries, etc. Sheriff took report for the building, simple incident. I couldn't make sense of it. I know how overly cautious I am while parking, what I do, and don't do. Took responsibility, but was still analyzing a week later, and explained what I remembered to the mechanic. He guessed right away. Said Sonatas were notorious for it. He said they're known for randomly applying the ebrake unexpectedly - and also randomly releasing the ebrake - and aggressively (and silently) switching from electric to gas when met with resistance, aka the parking curb. Insurance totalled the car. 2.5 years old, 17k miles. This was my 3rd Hyundai in 20 years, others were great. Discovered 40,000 Elantra hybrids, same year as my Sonata, were recalled due to "unintended acceleration."

Recall 286 my vehicle suffered from this causing heat module failure misfire in cylinder 2 and high pressure in gas tank. Sports Hyundai had previously done a 180 day repair under recall 9b1 for an expanded gas tank after the repair the car suffered from the updated recall 286 . I brang to the dealership 4 times with check engine and misfires and limp mode between 57k and 68k they refused to fix the car under recall 286 and cleared all the codes and continued to make me leave in a unsafe car. On February 14th it sport Hyundais negligence was the direct cause of an auto accident were the car was unable to move out the way because of lack of power /limp mode. I begged them in the final days of me having the car to fix it and saying I didn’t feel safe and they wouldn’t without an extensive amount of money I could not provide . I’m currently filing a claim with Hyundai consumer affairs and the dca in Newark and also my senators office and I have a lawyer also who might help I wish to report this to the NHTSA.

Vehicle WITHOUT WARNING will start to jerk then go into “limp” mode. Pressing on gas pedal makes the revving noise but with not physical movement made. This has happened on MULTIPLE occasions (13 times in 4 months) including in the snow and on the interstate while driving at 70mph where no shoulder is available to pull over. Car was taken to dealership 3 different times with no actual diagnosis, tests were ran all 3 times with nothing. Eventually the 3rd time at the dealership I was told the transmission was being replaced although they were not sure what actually caused the issue (this is written in the service report by the rep/mechanic). CAR REMAINS UNSAFE AND UNRELIABLE. Livelihood of myself, family and other drivers is at risk EVERYTIME I put the car in drive due to this mechanical issue. NO WARNINGS NO POWER NO FIX.

I am filing this complaint regarding Recall 25V-796 (Hyundai Recall 286). On November 27th, while driving, my vehicle made a loud popping noise twice and then began sounding muffled. About a week later, while on a long-distance drive, I attempted to refuel and the gas would not go into the tank. At another gas station I was able to fuel it, but afterward the vehicle began rapidly leaking fuel while I was driving. The fuel gauge was also malfunctioning. It showed 53 miles remaining and then suddenly jumped to 200 miles. It was not accurately reflecting the fuel level. When I stopped again for gas, the same muffled noise occurred and the fuel level rapidly dropped again. Due to safety concerns, I took the vehicle directly to the dealership.I dropped the vehicle off on December 6th and it has remained at the dealership ever since. The vehicle is currently sitting in their lot with no remedy available. I am still making monthly payments on a vehicle I cannot use. Although Hyundai provided a rental vehicle, it has now been over three months of inconvenience, including having to exchange rental vehicles for service. This has caused disruption to my daily life and financial strain. Hyundai has offered to pay off my loan and provide 8% toward the purchase of another vehicle. However, I am a single mother who is currently rebuilding financially after losing my job in prior years, and my credit score has been affected. I do not believe I should be pressured into purchasing another vehicle due to an unresolved manufacturer safety defect. I also attempted to seek guidance regarding Florida Lemon Law, but was informed that I may not qualify because the vehicle was purchased in April 2023 and the issue occurred after the two-year period. However, this is a manufacturer recall involving the fuel system, and I believe it is unfair that I am left financially responsible for a vehicle with a serious safety defect and no available remedy. I am requesting investigation

Car was parked, full stop, doors shut, seatbelt on. Foot on brake. Car then seemed to lurch forward by itself forward hitting parking cement block. Put in reverse to back away and car stayed still...then I tapped the gas again to back up and insted vehicle plowed forward.instead.of reverse ...went over the parking block and hit concrete beam in front, when the car should have backed up in reverse. I'm a person who drives speeed limits, and ulta careful when i drive, and parked at this place/spot for years. This has never happened not sure why it did. No injuries or other people involved thank god, but scared the heck out of me. Wracking my brain, my recalls and software and service appts are up ro date.Nothing out of ordinary that day. I'm confused and shaken, why the first lurch forward and why did going in reverse move it forward? ugh. It drove home fine. Commute to work daily for years, no issues. All I can guess is gear didn't click to reverse and was somehow in drive? Ive been going over the possibilities in my head for human error but they dont make sense - again I've been driving for 40 years. If it happens to other models, would love to know! Car will go to repair tomorrow as "my fault" via insurance, hoping they can see more if any error codes, to at least say if Reverse didn't engage or something else happened. May have been human error but it's so out of the ordinary for me. Thanks!

My Hyundai Sonata 2023 is experiencing two recall codes. The first one was 9b1 which was resolved, but the other one is indefinite which is 286. I dropped my car off on December 4 of 2025 and a month later Hyundai’s corporate team reached out to discuss the state of my car. They asked me for things such as the payoff balance of what I owe through CarMax who I’m financing the car from, they asked me the mileage on the car, the registration and the lien. They then told me they would provide me with an update by certain dates it’s been over two months and I haven’t received any updates. The car shop called me to come pick up my car because one of the issues was resolved, but after reviewing the recall code 286 and seeing that there is very much so a safety risk when driving the car, I ultimately chose to leave the car with Hyundai. Hyundai has been unsuccessful with providing me with the solution. I’ve waited two months almost 3 months and I believe that this vehicle is a lemon and I need a solution. Hyundai took back the loaner, I have nothing now and they keep telling me they’re going to follow up, but have not followed up with anything I need help. I don’t want to risk my life, driving the car and being paranoid that it could catch on fire and harm me or other people driving in it please help.

On January 6, 2026, during my morning commute in heavy traffic, my 2023 Hyundai Sonata engine unexpectedly turned off, causing a sudden loss of power. This created an extremely dangerous situation, and I came very close to being involved in a major collision. While I was fortunate to avoid a crash, the incident posed a direct threat to my safety and life because of the dense surrounding traffic.

ODI #11708428FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Hello Sir/Madam, While driving on Interstate I-75 at approximately 70 mph, the yellow check engine warning light suddenly illuminated. Immediately afterward, the vehicle began to shake violently, lose engine power, and run extremely rough. The vehicle experienced a sudden loss of power, and pressing the accelerator pedal did not result in normal response or acceleration. The throttle input was significantly reduced, making it difficult to maintain speed and safely control the vehicle. At highway speed and in heavy highway traffic, if we had not been able to safely exit the roadway, this loss of control could have put not only the occupants of this vehicle but also other drivers at serious risk. Fortunately, we were already in the exit lane, and a McDonald’s parking lot was located immediately off the exit. This allowed us to leave the highway quickly. Otherwise, this situation could have been extremely dangerous in active, heavy highway traffic. As the vehicle continued to shake, a strong smell of gasoline and a burning odor entered the cabin, raising concerns about a possible fire hazard. We safely stopped the vehicle in the McDonald’s parking lot and then shut the engine off due to the severity of the symptoms. After shutting the vehicle off, we attempted to restart it, but the engine would not start. The vehicle had to be towed to a Hyundai service center for inspection. The Hyundai service center later confirmed that the failure was caused by a faulty fuel injector, and they have changed all 4 injectors as I attached receipt from Hyundai This failure created a serious safety risk due to sudden loss of engine power, reduced accelerator response, severe shaking at highway speed, and fuel and burning odors inside the cabin. Regards

My car was having an issue where it was losing all the coolant, causing my engine to overheat twice while driving down the highway. Unfortunately I couldn't find a leak anywhere and there was no fluid leaking in my garage. I lost an entire reservoir of coolant overnight. After taking my car to the dealership to get repaired, I was told that it was leaking my coolant into the exhaust system and burning it up. I was also told "it was a know issue, they had a bulletin from Hyundai on how to fix the problem, and Hyundai completely redesigned the part to stop the leak and it had to be special ordered." I was without my car for a week and left with a $1300 bill as apparently it was not covered by my warranty. I have no idea how a known issue is happening so frequently that requires a nationwide bulletin and a part redesign, yet somehow is recalled. Especially considering it left me stranded on the side on the side of the highway in Indiana during a snow storm but someone seriously needs to investigate it.

ODI #11700476ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

I am reporting a serious coolant system defect on my 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid with about 13,500 miles. The vehicle develops an internal coolant leak while driving. Coolant burns off and white steam/smoke comes out of the exhaust, especially during acceleration. When this happens, the coolant level drops quickly, the interior heater stops working, and the car soon displays an engine overheating warning, forcing me to stop driving. This has happened multiple times and makes the vehicle unsafe. When I checked under the hood, coolant was at a low/empty level after overheating events. The car becomes undriveable once the alarm appears. I took the vehicle to a Hyundai dealer, and even though the vehicle is only 2 years old, they told me it was “out of warranty.” I had to pay about $1,500 for repairs, and since the dealer refused a loaner, I paid $250 for a rental car. I called Hyundai USA on 9/13/2025 and opened Case Number XXX. Hyundai acknowledged they are aware of coolant issues on the Sonata Hybrid but said no recall exists. This issue appears widespread. Many other owners report the same symptoms: white exhaust steam, coolant smell, coolant loss, no interior heat, and engine overheating. Hyundai released TSB 23-EM-009H, describing a failure where coolant leaks internally in the Exhaust Heat Recovery System (EHRS), causing white smoke and overheating—matching my symptoms exactly. This defect is a safety hazard because overheating can occur suddenly while driving, risking engine damage or breakdown in traffic. I request NHTSA investigate this issue as a potential recall-level defect on the 2023 Sonata Hybrid. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Fuel injectors cause car to lose power while driving in traffic, on the highway which can cause accidents. This event happened twice one while entering the highway and one while going past a light. The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at 35 MPH, the fuel mileage abnormally increased from 320 to approximately 431. An unknown message was displayed, and the contact received a notification on the Mobile App about a diagnostic trouble code for the EVAP sensor. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the EVAP system valve was stuck open. The dealer replaced the EVAP system, and the dealer then determined that the fuel tank was swollen due to the failure. The contact stated that the rear seat sensor was malfunctioning and was causing a warning light to illuminate erroneously, which the dealer related to the fuel tank swelling and lifting the metal underneath the seat. The dealer also replaced the fuel tank. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and covered the repairs. The failure mileage was approximately 73,245.

The fuel injectors failed on my Hyundai Sonata in two instances. Once on 5/23/24 and once on 9/7/25. During the first instance, I was driving on a local road when the accelerator stopped working and the engine started sputtering. We were fortunately able to stop at a nearby parking lot before the engine completely stopped working. During the second instance, I was also driving through a local road when the accelerator stopped and the engine started sputtering again. This time, we weren't able to reach a safe stopping point and the engine died on the road. My family was with me at the time, so we had to push the car in neutral to the closest safe space. In both cases, our safety and the safety was others was put at risk as the car become unable to accelerate, and the car stops moving. We had to get out on the road and push the car with oncoming traffic. The problem was confirmed by the dealer in both cases, and they replaced the fuel injectors in both cases. So far, they've replaced 3 out of the 4 fuel injectors so I still drive in fear of another fuel injector causing a breakdown while I'm driving. There were no warnings or symptoms prior to the failure so there was no way to know to stop driving and to stop in a safe spot. We were fortunate to be able to move the car to a safe place for both instances, but if this had happened on the highway or secluded location, our lives could've been at risk. I've requested Hyundai to replace the last fuel injector but they're refusing to do so. I only feel safe driving in local roads or short highway trips as I fear for the reliability of my car, my safety, and the safety of others.

While driving at highway speed, my vehicle suddenly lost power due to fuel injector failure and could not be restarted, creating a serious safety risk for myself and others in high-speed traffic. This is the second vehicle of the same year and model that I’ve owned to experience the exact same injector failure. In the first case, one injector was replaced under a Hyundai service bulletin before I sold the vehicle. This second occurrence confirms that the issue is not isolated and should be escalated to a formal safety recall. The most recent failure was diagnosed and repaired by Hyundai, confirming the problem (this time replacing all injectors). The vehicle has not been inspected by police, insurance, or other outside representatives. There were no warning lamps, messages, or symptoms prior to the failure—it occurred without any warning, significantly increasing the risk of a crash

I was driving my 2023 Hyundai Sonata with 22,000 miles on I-96 near Grand Rapids Michigan at or slightly below the speed limit of 70 MPH. Suddenly, with no advance warning of any kind, the engine shut down. I was able to coast and maneuver to the right shoulder of the road while avoiding traffic, including a large tractor trailer that almost hit us. The vehicle than had just enough power to get off the next exit and on a local side street. At that point the vehicle would not restart and you could smell a strong odor of fuel. It was a terrifying thing to experience and my safety was at risk due to my vehicle decelerating on a busy street. I had to call the police to help shield my vehicle from other drivers. The problem has been confirmed by a dealer upon inspection and diagnosis, and the police officer that was at the scene also could see that my vehicle would not start. This dealer works at the company that manufactures Hyundais. Prior to the fuel injection failure, there were brief moments where the 'check engine' light would illuminate but it would never stay on long. Directly before my vehicle shut off on the road due to the failure, there were no light/lamps/or other symptoms noticeable.

On June 4 as son was turning, the car started shaking & went to park. He managed to slip into a nearby parking spot & tried to reverse. The car turned on, put into reverse & then after about 2 seconds it went to park & stopped. This happened several times. It was towed to the dealer who today, June 10, reported it was a transmission flaw. The car was being driven at about 30 mph on a 2 way street. Had it been on the interstate at a higher speed, it may have caused a dangerous situation with a sudden stop.

My car stalled while driving through an intersection and nearly caused a T-Bone collision. The car would not start afterwards and towed to dealership. The car currently has 32000k miles on it. The inspection report stated leaking fuel injectors causing misfires. This was covered by warranty. The parts are currently backordered with no eta on possible repair indicating it might be a widespread issue. There were no warnings or lights prior to incident. The car had just been serviced at 30k miles by the dealership with no indication of possible failure given to me by maintenance department. The dealership is out of loan vehicles and I’ve been without a vehicle for 6 days now causing work and personal issues.

I have had this car checked out 3 times and on my way to the 4th appointment. I can be in the middle of the road or pulled up in my driveway the RPMs go crazy shuts off every light comes on then clicks and I have to waite and try to restart. This car has been a problem since we bought it brand new even the chrome has come loose on it. Took to 1 dealership they said it's not throwing a code so nothing they can do I pulled out of the dealership onto the busy highway and the rims went crazy lights came on and it died called the mechanic that said nothing was wrong he came out got it running took it back came back said nothing showing up so there was nothing he could do. I'm driving another 3 hours away hoping I make it to another dealership that said they would look at it after I sent pictures and a video to the mechanic. I will NEVER buy another hyundai again and definitely tell anyone I know not to.

The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, there was a loud sound coming from the rear end underneath the floorboard like a part slamming on the undercarriage of the vehicle. The contact stated that the fuel gauge suddenly indicated that the fuel tank was EMPTY. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the gas valve and electronic control unit (ECU) had failed. The contact stated that the gas valve was replaced, and the electronic control unit (ECU) was updated. After receiving the repair, the contact noticed that while attempting to accelerate, the vehicle downshifted before shifting to the desired gear and accelerating. The failure was most persistent while driving uphill. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to another dealer, All Star Hyundai (3950 Century Ct, Pittsburg, CA 94565) who was unable to diagnose the vehicle due to not having the tool necessary to detach the fuel tank. The vehicle was then taken to another dealer, San Leandro Hyundai a Carnamic Car Center (1066 Marina Blvd, San Leandro, CA 94577) who diagnosed that the pressure valve was swollen and the entire fuel tank and pressure valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Due to the inconsistency of diagnostic results, the contact decided to take the vehicle to another dealer, Fremont Hyundai (43690 Auto Mall Cir, Fremont, CA 94538) who diagnosed that the pressure valve was swollen but had not diagnosed that the fuel tank needed to be replaced due to not finding a failure with the fuel tank. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately failure mileage was 75,000.

Good afternoon. My issue is related to an existing recall that Hyundai Motor sent to me back during the beginning of January 2025 for a gas valve, tank inspection (replaced if necessary.) and ECU computer update. I've been to a total of 4 Hyundai Dealers and none of them have been consistent with this recall. The first Dealer is "Future Hyundai" in Concord, California. Initially, I'd took my car there for both recall and sound coming from the gas tank and my fuel level dropping. I was told by a service advisor by the name of Hayley, that it would cost a diagnostic fee to locate the issue. I didn't have the fees. But, seeing that the gas tank was part of the equation. It was free. The gas tank inspection was never done. I was told by Hayley that the fuel valve was replaced. But they mechanics only done a quick visual. I wasn't reassured that my issue was resolved. So I'd took it to a another Hyundai Dealer. This dealer told me that part of the procedure is to take off the tank and inspect it. I didn't get that far because I was told that a tool that was used is used to take off the tank was broken. A bleeder tool. Which doesn't make sense, because the tool is used for Bleeding out air from the fuel system. "Allstar Hyundai." The last two of the 4 dealers, "San Leandro Hyundai" and "Freemont Hyundai", told me that my fuel pressure hose in my gas tank and had swelled up. San Leandro dealer told me that my gas tank expanded. But the "Freemont Dealer" only mentioned the fuel hose. But never mentioned the gas tank. But decided to add it anyways. None of these dealers have been consistent regarding the recall. "Freemont Hyundai", the last of the 4, the service man told me that my tank is available. But his story changed from the time that I can get the job done 4 times. To having to have my car for two days before they can order the part. He'd order the parts, verified to me, when I was at my appointment. But now that conversation changed.

2023 Sonata N-Line, complete loss of power while driving on seven (7) occasions over the past year. In all cases above 60mph creating a dangerous condition to myself and fellow drivers while attempting to pull to the side of the road while rapidly losing speed. In all seven (7) cases, the DTC code is P065312. I have asked the dealership to note the recurring issue in my service records and I have reached out to Hyundai, mostly so that if I am involved in a serious accident because of this issue, there is a paper trail for legal purposes. The dealership folks are nice but basically unless the car rolls into the dealership with smoke pouring out of the engine, they want to charge a diagnostics fee and keep the car for multiple days which isn't helpful because like most, I need the car and the issue is extremely sporadic. It is disappointing and I hope Hyundai takes note and provides remedy for the issue sooner rather than later as this is my sixth (6th) Hyundai vehicle and really do like the car otherwise. I was driving into work on a major road (about 45 mph) when my 2023 Hyundai Sonata stopped accelerating and my engine gave out. Initially I thought I was accidentally pressing on my break pedal but when I realized I wasn’t pressing the break, I had just enough time to turn on my hazards and get out of traffic and onto the shoulder of the road. I was stuck between a main exit and the major road. My battery, oil, and engine lights came on (no service lights had been on prior to this incident) and my car was just very slowly rolling before it automatically engaged my parking break - which makes me fearful of what would have happened if I had still been in busy traffic. I could gotten very badly rear-ended. My car only has just over 5600 miles and I never had any issues with it before and kept up with the general maintenance. I attempted to restart my car to no avail and about 30 minutes later I was able to restart my car but there was a very strong vapor smell in the cabin of my car. I got my car towed to a dealership and was informed one of my fuel injectors was misfiring/gone bad - similar to many other incidents on this site. I asked the dealership if they were able to view the state of my other fuel injectors and was told they were unable to do that, so I am unsure if other fuel injectors will go bad in the future.

Twice within the first 26k miles i had 2 individual fuel injectors go bad. Both times my check engine light came on in the middle of driving, and then my car would no longer increase in speed and left me stranded on the road. Luckily, i was able to pull over to the side of the road. The random malfunction of the vehicle could’ve caused an accident or put my life, as well as the drivers on the road, in danger. When my vehicle arrived at the dealership, i was told that it was “because of the gas i was putting in my car”. I have never had any problems with any other vehicle when using the same gas, and have never heard of it from anyone else except from people with the same make and model as me. The dealership refused to replace the other 2 remaining fuel injectors because “they aren’t in need of repair” but acknowledged that I will just have to wait until the other 2 fuel injectors go bad and possibly be stranded in the middle of the road again. When picking up my vehicle after the seconds repair, I was told that my timing cover was leaking oil and that was repaired as well. When asked how that happened, the service center told me it was a factory malfunction. The first incident where Cylinder 2 went bad was on 12/27/2023 at 13,143 miles The second incident where Cylinder 3 went bad as well as the leaking timing cover was on 12/2/2024 at 25,890 miles

I bought the new car on 11/21/22. There have been two incidents with the same cause. Incident #1: On 1/25/23, while I was on a six lane highway with high speed traffic and rush hour level traffic, the car began to fail, with 'bucking', failure to respond to the gas pedal, loss of power, and difficulty steering. At that time, the check engine light also went on (it had not been on previous to the event starting). I was able to get the car off the highway, where it completely died - it would not move. It was towed. Mileage at this time was 1,330 miles - the car was 2 months old. It was diagnosed that "Cylinder #3 fuel injector is stuck open causing drivability issue". The likelihood that I would have been hit, by another car on that multi-lane highway with cars at high speed, and hurt or even killed is extremely high, if not certain. I did not file a report with NHTSA about the first incident (I was not aware of this service.) Incident #2: On 12/7/24, while I was again on a six lane highway, high speed traffic, night darkness, rain, and rush hour level traffic, the car began to fail in the exact same way as in 2023, 'bucking', failure to respond to gas pedal, slowing, difficulty steering, etc. I was able to get off the highway before it completely 'died'. It was undriveable and had to be towed. There was no warning light prior to the event occurring. Mileage at the time was 21,091. The probability, considering the rain, the dark, and the fact that I was on a 'super highway', that I could have been hit, hurt or even killed is extremely high. The diagnosis was 'TSB indicated #3 Fuel Injector be replaced." I do not have any of the old fuel injectors. In addition, I routinely - multiple times a week - have small children in this car. These events could have happened when I had a carful of small children with me. My routine schedule means there was also the high probability of others being hurt.

I have also changed my rotors once, resurfaced them another then, and I am in the process of changing them again. Now to this day, my calibers are shot. They will take 2 months on back order to come in from Korea. Maybe Hyundai needs to look into N lines in specific as I have read many people complaining about the same thing. I just picked my car up today after leaving it for 6 days. On my way home the emergency breaking system activated for no reason slowing my car down on the interstate. Both of these issues could get me or someone elas killed. I have not even had this car for 2 years and I am afraid to drive it. Please help. I know I am not the only person with this issue because I can see others on the internet who also have been told that the dealership can't dupe the problem. While driving on the country side, my car engine stopped providing power to the car and started making some noise. The engine rpm would fluctuate and increase due to downshifting but there was no power. Luckily, the car had some speed around 50 mph, the road was slightly downhill and nobody was behind, managed to coast to a gas station half a mile away. The engine shut itself off after the car stopped. I was able to restart the car but it would shut itself off within 2 seconds of restart. Car was towed to the dealership and I was told that it had a faulty injector. The injector was replaced a week later and I received my car back later.

My name is [XXX] , and I am the frustrated owner of a 2023 Hyundai Sonata SEL. For context, I am a [XXX] woman who had never experienced the frightening event of a “brand new” car breaking down—until now. I am still in shock and trembling from the experience I had with my “new” 2023 Hyundai Sonata on the morning of [XXX]. At 9:30 a.m., I was driving on [XXX] . I was driving the speed limit (55 mph) and cruising along when, all of a sudden, as I went to accelerate, my vehicle instead began decelerating rapidly. I pressed the gas pedal, thinking I might have let up too much or accidentally had my foot on the brake. However, pressing the gas only caused the RPM to spike, with no change in my speed. I had to act quickly, paying close attention to the surrounding traffic as my car slowed down. Thankfully, I managed to maneuver from the far-left lane to the shoulder of the highway. My speed had dropped to around 30 mph and was decreasing. Trying to safely navigate a slowing vehicle on a highway filled with traffic is an adrenaline rush I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I was in a state of severe panic. As I steered the car onto the shoulder, I noticed it was shaking and struggling to move forward. White smoke was also coming from the exhaust. Once safely stopped, I put the car in park and turned off the engine to let it cool down. After a few minutes, I restarted it and noticed the engine, oil, and battery indicators were all illuminated on the dashboard. My first thought was a battery issue, but the car was still able to turn on. However, the engine did not start. A notification appeared, stating the car was not in a condition to be driven. After receiving the car back from the Hyundai Dealer I was notified that the issue was due to fuel injectors failing. The dealer has reproduced the problem but can't get enough information for the tech line to approve a new transmission even though the dealership has repeatedly said that is what it needs. On 3 separate occasions the vehicle decelerated, lights flickered and stated to produce a burning smell through the engine. Each time the car would not allow me to accelerate and eventually stalled out. The car would no immediately start. After a few minutes it would start but not accelerate. After about 30 minutes it would start and would drive about 5-15 mph, enough to get me to my location. On the first occasion I was coming home late in the evening after working a 12 hour shift and had to have a family member get me after being stranded by the side of the road. The second time I was taking my 4 to son to his planned surgery in a bigger city and it broke down on the way. It was not safe driving in the city barely being able to excel but we did it for my son. The third time I was in a larger time in traffic and missed an appointment as I tried to stear my decelerating vehicle out of multiple lanes of traffic to a safe location. I could not use the air conditioner while I attempted to let it rest in 100°+ heat. Each time the lights would flicker and dim. There would be a smoke from the exhaust. After the first 2 occurrences we took it to the dealership but they were not able to replicate the problem or identify a causative code. During the last occurrence we were able to get it to the dealership very slowly and they deemed it to be the fuel injector malfunctioning. This was fixed after about a week or so of being in the shop . About a week or two after the fuel injector was fixed the check engine light came on. We took it back into the service department and they "reset" the system thinking it was an error. The light came back on in less than 24 hours. The vehicle has been running a little harder, not as fast or responsive as normal. A service/evaluation date was scheduled and the code was checked indicating it was likely the catalytic converter. We scheduled another service appointment once the part was in which is 2 weeks from the evaluation appointment.

I have had three occasions where the dashboard lights would flash and the car would lose all power. The first occasion occurred on December 29th at around 12:20 pm at a crowded intersection. The dashboard lights lit up and all of a sudden the car had no power at all. I managed to get it through the intersection and pull it off to the side of the road. To start it up I have to TURN OFF THE CAR by putting it in park and start it up again. This is stressful and terrifying to think about if this had happened on the freeway. Additionally, I took the car to get serviced and was charged a $1,800 bill to fix it in January. This repair took two weeks to complete. The car has since turned off two additional times on February 15th going down a hill at 40 mph and March 26th on a mountain road going 60 mph. I am very concerned this will happen on the highway and I will get into a serious accident or worse. To make matters more difficult, I have taken the car back to the Hyundai dealer again to have it looked at in April and will most likely be without the car for at least another week. I bought the car brand new and the check engine light has gone off four times since then.

This raised the RPM, but it dropped quickly and stalled the engine again. Made a couple more attempts after and eventually, the engine light came on. Shortly before this incident, I had about 10-15% of gas left in my tank. After this happened, bluelink reported that I had 1% left. Got the vehicle towed to the dealership, where they confirmed the condition and found that the fuel injector for cylinder 3 needed to be replaced. I consider myself lucky that this happened while my vehicle was parked. This would've been a huge safety concern if it happened out on the road.

The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that on two separate occasions while driving at various speeds, the vehicle started to shake, and the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was pulled over to the side of the roadway and turned off. The vehicle failed to restart on both occasions. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel injector needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 11,000.

Forward Collision Warning appeared, vehicle lost power and would not accelerate. Vehicle kept loosing power. Multiple codes appeared. I am an ASE certified mechanic, so I went to my own business to get my scanner and there was a list of codes. Vehicle is currently at dealership and they are tracking down issues. Currently blaming an ECM but unsure. This is the second vehicle I have had this exact issue with. I have video that it won't allow me to upload of all the codes. I have a video of a previous issue, with a different vehicle. It's a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe

MY 2023 HYUNDAI SONATA LIMITED HAS AN ISSUE WHERE WATER ENTERS THE REAR LEFT DOOR AND GETS TRAPPED BETWEEN THE LOWER DOOR SEALS. WATER POURS OUT WHEN THE DOOR IS OPENED. A GOOGLE REVIEW OF "SONATA REAR DOOR LEAK" SHOWS THIS IS A WIDE SPREAD ISSUE WITH THIS DOOR AND CAR MODEL. IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR IN A NORTHERN CLIMATE THE DOOR WOULD HAVE ICE COLLECT BETWEEN THE DOOR AND DOOR SILL AND PREVENT THE DOOR FROM OPENING IN AN EMERGENCY. GOOGLE SHOWS NUMEROUS PEOPLE HAVE TRIED TO GET THIS ADDRESSED . MOST WITH NO SUCCESS FROM HYUNDAI. I HAD TAKEN MY CAR TO COCONUT CREEK HYUNDAI IN COCONUT CREEK FLORIDA IN AUG 2023 AND WAS TOLD "THIS CONDITION IS COMMON TO THE MODEL". NO FIX ATTEMPTED. I ESCALATED TO HYUNDAI USA, AND THEY LITERALLY STATED THEY CANNOT SUPERCEED THE DEALER AND TO TAKE THE CAR ELSEWHERE. THEY IGNORE THE DOOR ISSUE AND ALSO STATED ON RECORDED CALL ( THEIR RECORDING) THAT THIS CONDITION IS COMMON TO THE MODEL. I FEAR THE FIRST ACCIDENT THAT THE DOOR CANNOT BE OPENED DUE TO INTERNAL ICE COLLECTION. PLEASE JUST GOOGLE "SONATA WATER IN DOORS" TO SEE HOW COMMON THIS IS!

The brake rotors are faulty and become warped at 9k mile I now have 27k and are extremely warped causing braking issues at higher speeds. I have been waiting over two months for new rotors from the dealer with no word as to when they will arrive. If the vehicle is left un-driven for a couple days the rotors will become rusted. Even the brand new vehicles in the Hyundia showroom are covered in rust. The suspension of the rear shock are extremely weak and bottoms out on the smallest rut. Cornering I’m the vehicle is subject to enormous amounts of whee hop which could result in an accident.

My concern is a potential unintended acceleration forward as. I was. parking vechicle. Sudden burst of speed, went thru shrubbery and off a 2 foot wall. Felt as if we were taking off a runway in a plane. Car went nose up over the wall and then dropped into a neighbor yard digging a divot, ripping rear left fender and bumper with some undercarriage problems. My spouse and I were seatbelted and not injured. I can not recall any safety warning until car stopped and then do recall a message being on dash but cannot presently recall what it said. Purchased a new Hyundai 2023 Sonata from McGovern Hyundai Rt 2 May 22, 2023. After two weeks of driving the vehicle, I noticed it hesitates when I push down on the gas pedal. I had planned to have the dealership take a look but have a very busy schedule, the issue continued each time I drove the car to the point it was hesitating, basically pausing as I cross intersections. On the 26th of July I was driving on the highway, as I started to experience issues when stepping on the gas. Entering a tunnel in Boston, I pushed down on the gas pedal and noticed the car was decelerating, I was losing speed, in a panic in the center lane of the tunnel, I was able to get the car over to the far right. The car was shaking aggressively then finally just gave out and I called 911. They towed the vehicle to the police headquarters, I called Hyundai for assistance. Had some hiccups but two days later they were able to service the vehicle, supposedly found a faulty fuel injector. They changed out the 1 faulty injector test drive and said the problem was fixed. I picked up my car on July 28th 2023. There is something still wrong with the car, it still has some hesitation and now misfires. Have not heard from Hyundai, I was assigned a case manager and told someone would follow up, no one has reached out. So lucky my children were not in the car and that i'm safe. I could have been killed, others could have been hurt/killed. This should not happen to brand new cars.

The power-operated driver seat has moved on its own, without warning, while the vehicle is in gear, potentially moving the driver away from being able to reach the brake pedal or otherwise control the vehicle. The vehicle uses seat position memory pre-sets and/or driver profiles, such that even if a new driver sets the seat position manually or by using a pre-defined memory setting, will move the seat to the position it was last driven in. The driver can stop the seat from moving further by either activating the seat position controls or by selecting a seat position memory setting.

When I approach an intersection to stop my car auto shut off engages. When trying to hit the gas to release my car from auto shut off the emergency auto shut off engages and I must put my car in park. Turn the ignition to off and then crank my car back all the way on. Release the park and drive. This happens intermittently for several weeks and I’ve almost been rear ended several times. I have taken the car to a Hyundai dealership for the issue and they tell me nothing is wrong.

This is the second incident with the same issue. Both times the car starts to shutter and when you give it gas it doesn't do anything and then it just dies. No steering no brakes nothing. You may or may not be able to restart the car to move it if it breaks down when it's in traffic, luckily we were able to get it fired up long enough to move it off the road.

I want to say through this message exactly a month ago that I bought my Hyundai sonata sel 2023 and today driving the car it completely lost power when accelerating so I had to stop immediately I put my turn signals after that I turned off the car! I opened the hood and I didn't see any smoke coming out until that part, everything was fine. Then when I tried to start the car, it made a strange noise and a strong smell of gasoline began to come out! try several times and the same result that the car does not start the engine makes strange noise and the smell of gasoline is very strong that I had to get out of the car and leave it off, at the time I write this message I am still waiting for assistance!

I was driving on the freeway, at the speed limit, cruising along. Then all of a sudden, my vehicle starts to decelerate from 65 MPH and I push the gas, thinking I must have let up too much on the pedal. However, that only causes the RPM to drastically rise with NO change in my speed. I thankfully managed to maneuver from the far left lane to the freeway shoulder on the far right. The whole time, my speed was around 40 MPH and dropping drastically. Trying to safely navigate a slowing vehicle on a 65+ Texas freeway is an adrenaline-rush that I wouldn’t wish on anybody. I was severely panicking. I was almost hit by several vehicles in my maneuvering. I could have died last night. Once on the shoulder, I tried to start my car. I thought it may be a battery issue, but it turned on. It didn't start, though. The lights came on, as did all of the typical system/dash lights that usually indicate when a car’s engine hasn’t “turned over.” I used Bluelink to call for roadside assistance (since I’m only a little over 2 months into ownership) and waited. I was escorted off of the freeway to safety — thanks to a 3-car police escort AND free city tow trucks — and eventually picked up by Hyundai-serviced AAA. The latter then towed my vehicle to the dealership where I bought my Sonata. My car is currently being checked/inspected by my dealer (North Freeway Hyundai) and I only have gotten the following notice from Bluelink: "A possible condition with your Engine Control System has been detected with your 2023 SONATA on 02/22/2023 at 07:23 am CST. A full system check is recommended to be done soon." I checked and there are no open recalls (currently). Even more concerning, my car recently underwent complimentary maintenance, including an oil change, through my dealer (on February 13, 2023 - I have the receipt), was good on gas, and had no warning lights displaying. Until it stopped running — the time I tried to start it on the side of the road, the dash showed an “engine” light.

While on the highway, my car suddenly started shaking violently and losing power. I lost steering and was unable to accelerate. I pulled over to the side of the road and the vehicle would not start again. I took it in and a fuel injector was stuck open and it had flooded my engine. This was the second time with this vehicle that this happened.

On a highway cruising at 70mph with the ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control ) on and following distance set at max a car from another lane turned into my lane and then continued to an off ramp. My car initially braked and then downshifted from 8th to maybe 4th and accelerated hard - scaring me and my passengers. I did add to the actions of the car by pressing the following distance button on the steering wheel a few times. I had owned a 2016 Sonata with ACC and drove over 100K miles with ACC operating. That is why i pressed the following distance button - to lessen the actions of the car when the car entered my lane. The 2016 also had a ACC setting of Fast, Normal, & Slow (I used normal). The 2023 has no ACC setting. I did complain to my dealer and he said this was normal and nothing happened. I feel this is dangerous so reported it to Hyundai Customer Service. They told me to go to my dealer.

Chart Analysis

The blue line shows 79 total NHTSA complaints filed over 5 years, with the worst year being 2024 (24 complaints, including 1 crash report).

The amber reliability line is declining — recent years score around 10/100, lower than earlier in the vehicle's life. This pattern indicates issues are accumulating over time rather than being resolved, which is a concern for used buyers.

Notably, despite 79 complaints on file, no recall has been issued — either the defect pattern has not met NHTSA's threshold for a formal campaign, or a recall may be forthcoming.

Red dots on the amber line flag 3 years (2023, 2024, 2026) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
