The brakes system is the most-reported problem for the 2014 HYUNDAI Accent — 21 NHTSA complaints (26% of all filings). Prioritize it in a pre-purchase inspection.
⚠No odometer data on record. Items marked VERIFY below are age-based maintenance reminders — general guidance, not confirmed findings for this specific vehicle. Confirm actual mileage and service history with the seller.
CASCADECriticalFailure Cascade
Cascade already triggered — downstream damage likely in progress
Have a specialist inspect all systems connected to the failed component before purchase
One failed component has created stress on connected systems. Repair costs compound quickly — a $500 fix can become $3,000+ if cascade damage is ignored.

VERIFYCriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Typical interval: 120,000 mi / 10 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify timing chain tensioner service history with the seller
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
VERIFYCriticalWater Pump
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 8 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify water pump service history with the seller
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
VERIFYHighTransmission Fluid / Service
Typical interval: 60,000 mi / 5 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify transmission fluid / service service history with the seller
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
VERIFYHighCoolant Flush
Manufacturer interval: 60,000 mi / 5 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify coolant flush service history with the seller
✓ per published maintenance schedule
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
VERIFYModerateSpark Plugs (iridium/platinum)
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 8 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify spark plugs (iridium/platinum) service history with the seller
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
VERIFYModerateFuel Injectors
Typical interval: 120,000 mi / 10 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify fuel injectors service history with the seller
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.

This vehicle has the Hyundai 1.6L GDI engine, which has been recalled in other Hyundai models, just not the 2014 Accent. Just after passing 100,000 miles, this vehicle's check engine light came on indicating something was wrong with the camshaft timing. We brought it to a mechanic and found out the camshaft sprockets on the exhaust are faulty and it requires a new timing chain as well. If these repairs were not done, the engine would seize up and fail. The repair is estimated to cost $2,800, but this issue is the same as on other 1.6L GDI engines that have been recalled and either replaced or rebuilt. We would like this vehicle added to Hyundai's recall of the 1.6L GDI engines and our money for this repair to be reimbursed.

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Accent. The contact stated that while driving at undisclosed speeds on several occasions, the steering wheel seized. No warning light was illuminated. The brakes locked up, causing a tire blowout. The contact stated that the tie rod was replaced. The contact stated that a neighbor assisted with freeing the steering wheel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but the vehicle was not diagnosed. The contact was informed that, due to the age of the vehicle, the struts and brake pads should be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

While driving at approximately 70MPH on the highway, my 2014 Hyundai Tucson Limited suddenly locked up with no warning lights, no noise and no prior symptoms. The engine completely seized, causing immediate loss of power. I was barely able to coast off the highway exit to a final stop on the feeder shoulder, in a desolate area. The vehicle has always been properly maintained and is in excellent condition. Upon research, I learned that Hyundai has known of internal engine defects caused by metallic debris left from manufacturing since 2010, which can cause bearing failure and engine seizure. My Tucson's failure matches the same pattern described in Hyundai's Theta II engine recall and warranty extension campaigns. This sudden failure created an extremely dangerous situation at highway speed and possibility of injury while being stranded on an open road. Many owners, myself included, were never properly notified of the risks. I am filing this report because this incident represents a serious safety defect and potential recurrence among similar vehicles that may not yet be covered by recall. I respectfully request that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigate this issue and ensure Hyundai expands its recall and warranty coverage to include affected 2014 Hyundai Tucson Limited vehicles exhibiting this defect that was well-known to the Hyundai Corporation. Date of Incident: October 23,2025 in Houston Texas. Vehicle towed to Hyundai dealer which diagnosed Engine Seized and currently awaiting Warranty Extension Approval (TXXC/TXXI)

When driving my 2014 Hyundai Accent, the brake system completely failed and I lost all ability to stop the vehicle. I was able to stop the car by downshifting to a lower gear and use the emergency handbrake. I was able to avoid other vehicles and no accident occurred. The vehicle was towed to a Hyundai dealer and determined the brake lines corroded and fluid loss caused loss of braking. No warning lamps indicated an issue and no loss of brake fluid was seen prior to the incident.

I can be at a stop and literally wiggle it loose and releases. I have researched it online through multiple platforms there's over a 100+ hyundai owners with the same problem. Please look into this issue! I have 3 children 1 is gonna start driving soon. (2014 hyundai accent) Thank you!

The contact owned a 2014 Hyundai Accent. The contact stated that while driving, the drive stick shift failed to change gears from first gear. The drive stick shift became abnormally stuck when depressing the brake pedal and attempting to shift gears. The contact merged to the shoulder of the road with the assistance of the emergency brakes and noticed smoke. The contact was able to safely exit the vehicle when it caught on fire under the front passenger side. The police and fire departments arrived on the scene however the vehicle was consumed by the fire. The vehicle was towed to a salvage lot and deemed a total loss. No injuries were sustained. The VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V651000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC) and the contact believed it was related to her failure. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

I was entering highway on entrance ramp there was a loud pop and I could see plumes of smoke coming from under the car, so I turned the ignition off on the car and pulled over to the shoulder, the brakes failed so I had to let it coast to a stop. Then I waited until I could safely exit the vehicle and did so quickly. I had the vehicle towed to a local shop, and they told me I should report it. There was no warning that it was about to happen and yes its available for inspection still sitting at the shop I had it towed to. They also said I should have it towed to the manufacturer service center but this is my first time dealing with anything like this so Im unsure what to do. I did do a cursory inspection under the hood with a mechanic from the shop and there was a burnt wire and a bunch of what looked like oil down at the bottom of the engine, but the oil was still full so I dont think it was oil.

ODI #11611271SERVICE BRAKES

There have been 2 recalls in which this vehicle was serviced for within the past year- 1 for undercoating 2 for leaking brake fluid fuse. Neither time were my brake lines inspected for any damage. One month after the fuse was replaced, my brakes went out with the dealership saying the lines were rusted through. Now, we are stuck without a vehicle because there are no brake lines available for this vehicle, everything is on back order with no eta. Had either time this car was serviced for these band aid recalls been looked at, we would not be in the situation we are now. No vehicle, no parts available, a dealership completely unwilling to work with us. Research was done and every vehicle in the 2014 Hyundai class except for the Accents were recalled in Canada for brake lines rusting out after undercoating in Canada. This needs to be looked into because as it stands, our estimate is $2600 to fix an issue that should had been better addressed with these recalls. We were driving back from an outing with our grandchildren when the brakes went completely out with no warning. The brake light did not come when the brakes failed. By the Grace of God we were able to get this car to a Hyundai dealership where it sits today due to poor communication on their part, no parts, and complete frustration on our end.

The emergency "e brake" will not engage & is non-functioning. Contacted Hyundai Headquarters for recall resolution as this issue could harm/kill my child &/or others. The car is unsafe to be driven. Hyundai resolution rep made an appt for at a local dealership. The dealership stated they would repair the car regardless of the recall, but I would have to pay & have Hyundai "try" to reimburse me as they do not have a "fix" for the recall as it could supposedly start a fire &/or lose braking system. Question? How can you repair a vehicle due to recall failure, yet NOT have a "fix" for the recall? Something not adding up. Start of incident with car July 2023. I continue to have to pay for insurance and tag registrations for a car that cannot be driven safely as Hyundai states there is no "fix" as of yet. Due to fire risk the car must be parked outside to endure weather elements which deteriorates the vehicle.

On 02/18/2023 at approximately 5pm, my family was driving on the highway, when unexpectedly, my check engine starts flashing and there is a noticeable decrease in acceleration and my vehicle feels rough/jerking as I head to the nearest exit. My spouse checks the vehicle and believes it is a spark plug/coil issue and we head to the nearest auto parts. The store rep is able to confirm engine misfire on all 4 cylinders, which does seem to indicate that spark plugs/coils should be replaced. We replace the plugs and coils, yet the replacement does not correct the problem. On 02/21/2023, I am able to have a certified mechanic diagnose my vehicle and he performs a compression test and confirms that 3 cylinders are at slightly lower PSI, and the 4th is at 0 PSI. Unknown to me, this means my engine needs to be replaced. The mechanic provides additional information that there are known issues with Hyundai engines and recommends I contact dealer, as he has also had a number of Hyundai owners with the same issue. I did further research and I discovered that my specific vehicle is not included in any current recalls. Yet I also discovered that there is an open Class Action lawsuit to expand the recall, which appears to include the engine in my vehicle. I did contact the Hyundai consumer affairs on 02/21/2023 and I am directed to contact my nearest Hyundai service center. I contacted the Hyundai dealership in Auburn, WA yet after my initial contact the representative fails to return my messages or follow-up. As this appears to be an ongoing issue with certain Hyundai vehicles, I want to make sure that there is a record of this incident for your review. The one ongoing issue I can confirm is that my vehicle appeared to burn oil. Although, it was inconvenient, I was able to get top offs at Jiffy Lube.

The contact owned a 2014 Hyundai Accent. The contact stated while driving 45 mph, another vehicle intersected her lane, causing her to steer to the right and crashed into another vehicle. No air bags were deployed and the front driver-side seat belt failed to retract, causing her to hit her right knee with the dashboard and her chest on the steering wheel. The contact was unable to lift her legs or hip and was taken to the emergency room where by ambulance and sought medical attention. The contact stated the other driver sustained unknown injuries and also sought medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was not drivable. The insurance company deemed the vehicle a total loss. The vehicle was towed to a towing lot first and then to the Copart lot. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

The driver's seat belt unbuckles randomly while driving. This issue seems to be more prevalent depending on the seat position and dimensions of the driver. Nevertheless, it has happened to him as well.

The seatbelt unbuckles on its own when driving. It is happening each time my husband or I drive the vehicle. I’m concerned that the seatbelt will unbuckle in case of a collision. I’ve been looking online, and the 2014 Hyundai Accent does not have any reported issues with the seatbelt that I can find. I have not yet taken the vehicle for inspection, but I’m not sure what to do next. No lamps are lighting up to indicate this problem. It just happens randomly at any speed.

ODI #11467461ENGINE

Due to a premature engine failure in my 2014 Hyundai Accent, I was prompted that I needed to swap out my engine by Hyundai. I had my engine replaced by a licensed mechanic and we used the same engine recommended by Hyundai. The donor engine came from VIN # [XXX]. The engine was properly installed into my Hyundai Accent in September of 2021. I only put 5,000ish miles on the car and I started hearing a weird sound from my car. I got it checked by 6 different mechanics and they told me the noise that I was hearing is coming from a bad rod bearing. One of the mechanics prompted me to look into recalls for that engine. Low and behold... there is a recall for this engine for the same exact issue I am experiencing!! I looked up the VIN for the engine on Hyundai's website and it is Service Campaign 966. I took my vehicle to Hyundai and filed a claim, but they did not want to do anything for me since I don't have the original car. It bothered me though because even if I did have the original car, they did not seem like they wanted to fix the issue at hand. I kept getting the run around from them without any path forward. My car has been in this situation since March of 2022. The Key of Manchester Hyundai wants me to do another engine swap for $7,000 dollars or to lease a vehicle from them. I have been in a very dismal situation and I don't know what to do or who to turn to. I was at risk when I got the vehicle to them and they allowed me to drive away without even batting an eye. The engine started burning oil at about 105,000 miles, despite it never missing an oil change and never abused. Apparently other Hyundais and Kia’s have also experienced early engine failure due to the manufactures poor quality control. It’ll burn about a quart of oil about every 1,500 miles. The engine has about 127,000 miles on the odometer.

The contact stated that while driving at highway speeds and when sitting idle the air conditioning warning light would flicker the rpm would drop down or go straight to zero, the speedometer would drop down zero and the vehicle began to have hesitation as if it intends to stall. The contact stated that when the issues occurs on the highway they would pull over to the side of the road where the vehicle would then stall once they were idle. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer who was not able to find the cause of the failure. The dealer performed an induction service. The failure reoccurred immediately after. The contact stated that they then took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who confirmed the dealer's information. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. After he did a diagnostics on my vehicle he said he couldnt find anything besides that the engine is burning oil and they couldnt figure out why or where it was that was causing this problem. THIS CAR AND ITS SEAT HAVE GRADUALLY ERODED BY LOWER BACK AND SPINE. THE SEAT IS SHAPED IN AN SUCH A WAY THAT IT FORCES THE SPINE INTO AN UNNATURAL POSITION. WHEN FACTORING IN THE FACT THAT EVEN MINOR BUMPS IN THIS CAR CAUSE ITS WEAK SUSPENSION TO SEND VIBRATIONS THROUGHOUT THE SEAT, MY BACK HAS SUFFERED LONG LASTING DAMAGE. NO AMOUNT OF BUILT IN LUMBAR SUPPORT OR ADDED CUSHIONS HAS RESOLVED THIS ISSUE. IN ADDITION THE ONLY WAY TO GET ADEQUATE LEG ROOM IS TO HAVE THE SEAT BACK BUT THE POSITION OF THE STEERING WHEEL PULLS THE SHOULDERS FORWARD. THIS HAS RESULTED IN A GREAT AMOUNT OF PAIN AND PUTS THE SPINE IN A FURTHER VULNERABLE POSITION TO BE SUBJECTED TO VIBRATIONS FROM THE ROAD AND FORCES AN UNNATURAL SITTING POSITION. IN THE ATTACHED IMAGES, PLEASE NOTE THE POSITION AT WHICH THE STEERING WHEEL IS IN RELATION TO THE SEAT. IT DOES NOT ALLOW FOR A NATURAL BEND OF THE ELBOW. PURCHASED THE CAR USED IN 2015 WITH LESS THAN 30,000 MILES AND IN LESS THAN 6 MONTHS THE POWER STEERING STARTED MALFUNCTIONING REGULARLY. WARNING LIGHT WOULD COME ON WHILE DRIVING AND THEN THE NEXT TIME I'D START THE CAR IT'D BE OKAY. THEN THE SAME THING WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN 3 DAYS LATER, OVER AND OVER AGAIN. TERRIBLE.

ODI #10895967STRUCTURE

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI ACCENT. WHILE DRIVING HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THE PANELS BELOW THE FRONT HEADLIGHTS FELL OUT AFTER HITTING A BUMP IN THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRACKETS WERE FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,500.

ODI #10874896WHEELS

I BOUGHT A 2014 HYUNDAI ACCENT WITH 16,XXX MILES ON IT AND AFTER A MONTH OF DRIVING THE CAR I NOTICED A BUBBLE IN THE SIDE WALL. WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND THAT "I MUST HAVE CAUSED THE DAMAGE" WORDS DIRECTLY FROM THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. I HAVE ANALYZED THE TIRE AND THERE IS NO SIGN OF HITTING ANYTHING (POTHOLE, CURB, ETC) VERY DISPLEASED WITH THESE TIRES AND THE FACT THAT ITS $120+ FOR A TIRE THAT SHOULD'VE BEEN RECALLED.

ODI #10761198UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)

I BOUGHT MY HYUNDAI AROUND MARCH OR APRIL 2015. AFTER ABOUT A MONTH I NOTICED THAT THE ESC WAS COMING ON AND OFF. WHILE VISITING FAMILY IN FISHERS INDIANA IN AUGUST I NOTICED THAT NOT ONLY WAS THE ESC COMING BUT ALSO ALL THE OTHER WARNING LIGHTS I.E. ABS, AIR BAG, PARKING BRAKE AND EPS. ON AUGUST 17 I TOOK MY CAR TO THE NOBLESVILLE HYUNDAI DEALER. ON THE 18TH I WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS A NEGATIVE COMPONENT NOT GROUNDED AND WAS FIXED. ABOUT 1.5 WEEKS LATER THE PROBLEM RETURNED PLUS NOW THE LOW TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT WAS COMING ON. ON THE 31ST OF AUGUST I WENT BACK TO THE DEALER EXPLAINING THAT THE PROBLEM HAD RETURNED. AS OF SEPTEMBER 2 THEY STILL HAVE NOT DETERMINED WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. PICKED UP MY CAR ON SEPTEMBER 3RD AND WAS TOLD THAT SINCE THEY COULDN'T GET THE CAR TO ACT UP THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO SO I TOOK MY CAR. I'LL JUST HAVE TO SEE IF AND WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURS AGAIN THEN TAKE IT STRAIGHT BACK TO DEALER.

ODI #10733497STEERING,AIR BAGS,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)

I BOUGHT MY CAR IN FEB 2014, SINCE THAT THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) INDICATOR HAS COME ON SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING. WHEN THE ESC IS ON, THE OTHER INDICATORS AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT, ABS, PARKING BRAKE & BRAKE FLUID WARNING LIGHT, LOW TIRE PRESSURE TELLTALE AND ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING (EPS) INDICATOR WILL ALSO TAKE TURNS TO COME ON FOR A WHILE AND THEN OFF FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN BACK ON AGAIN. AFTER I RESTART, ESC LIGHT WILL STAY ON AND THE OTHER LIGHTS TAKE TURNS TO ON AND OFF. THIS WILL LAST SEVERAL DAYS AND THEN BACK TO NORMAL. THE WORST THING HAPPENED ON JUNE, 2015, AFTER THE LIGHTS HAVE BEEN ON AND OFF THE DAY BEFORE, THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING WAS LOST WHEN I STARTED MY CAR. AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT, ABS, PARKING BRAKE & BRAKE FLUID WARNING LIGHT AND EPS WERE ALL ON. I WAS TOTALLY IN SHOCK BY WHAT HAD HAPPENED SINCE I BASICALLY COULD NOT BACK OUT FROM THE PARKING LOT WITH THE STIFF STEERING. I RESTARTED SEVERAL TIMES AND COULD NOT WORK OUT. WHEN I FINALLY GOT TO DEALER, THE TECHNICIAN TURNED ON THE CAR, EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL. THEY TRIED TO GET A CODE FOR ME BUT NO CODE SHOWED ANY MALFUNCTION. SINCE THEN, I WAS DRIVING IN AFRAID THAT THIS MAY HAPPEN AGAIN AT ANY TIME AND I MAY LOSE CONTROL AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.

ODI #10717087TIRES,WHEELS

MY DAUGHTER RECENTLY PURCHASED (JAN 29 2015) A 2014 HYUNDAI/ ACCENT/ GLS, VEHICLE # [XXX] FROM HADDAD OF THE BERKSHIRE HADDAD HYUNDAI, 689 EAST STREET IN PITTSFIELD , MA 01201 THIS VEHICLE CAME EQUIPPED WITH 4 KUHMO TIRES (LOW PROFILE # [XXX] . WE HAVE HAD TO REPLACE TWO OF THE ORIGINAL TIRES THE DRIVER LEFT FRONT TIRE DEVELOPED A GIANT BULGE IN THE SIDEWALL (THE TIRE AND RIM HAVE NO INDICATION OF SCRAP ON THE SIDE ), WE ALSO NOTICED THE RIGHT REAR TIRE IS DEVELOPING A BULGE IN THE SIDEWALL. I JUST HAD THE LEFT FRONT DRIVERS TIRE REPLACED AT THE ORIGINAL DEALER HADDAD OF THE BERKSHIRE HADDAD HYUNDAI, 689 EAST STREET IN PITTSFIELD , MA 01201 . UPON REVIEW WITH SERVICE ASSOCIATE THEY DETERMINED THE TIRES ARE NOT FAULTY AND ARE NOT COVERED AS WARRANTY. I FEEL DIFFERENTLY ABOUT THIS ISSUE, THREE PROBLEMS WITH TIRES ON A CAR LESS THAN OLD LEAVES ME WONDERING ABOUT THE KUMHO TIRES AND THE TIRES COMPATIBILITY AND ABILITY TO PERFORM ON THIS HYUNDAI ACCENT. DEALERS COMMENTS" I REVIEWED YOUR EMAIL WITH [XXX] , OUR SERVICE DIRECTOR AND WE ALSO SPOKE TO [XXX] AT HYUNDAI. THIS BULGING CONDITION ON THE TIRES IS CONSIDERED A ROAD HAZARD WHICH IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. IT IS CAUSED BY POT HOLES AND WHEN THEY ARE HIT, IT BREAKS THE SIDE WALL STEAL BELT. THIS CAUSES THE BULGE WHICH EVENTUALLY WILL POP. THE TIRES ARE ALSO A LOWER PROFILE TIRE. " IT APPEARS TO ME THERE IS A DEFECT WITH THESE TWO TIRES THAT BULGED OUT, KEEP IN MIND THE RIMS AND TIRES IN QUESTION HAVE NO SCRAPS OR DENTS.. IN MY OPINION THE KUMHO TIRES / DESCRIPTION [XXX] LOW PROFILE POSE A SERIOUS HAZARD TO ANY VEHICLE THAT IS EQUIPPED WITH THEM DUE TO THE ABILITY TO DAMAGE UNDER NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS. IF AN UNSUSPECTING OPERATOR HITS A CURB OR HOLE THESE TIRES CAN BLOWOUT. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

Chart Analysis

The blue line shows 80 total NHTSA complaints filed over 11 years, with the worst year being 2024 (24 complaints, including 1 crash report).

The amber reliability line averaged 92/100 across the vehicle's life — relatively stable, with the lowest point of 87/100 in 2024.

Notably, despite 80 complaints on file, no recall has been issued — either the defect pattern has not met NHTSA's threshold for a formal campaign, or a recall may be forthcoming.

Red dots on the amber line flag 8 years (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
