VERIFYCriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Typical interval: 120,000 mi / 10 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify timing chain tensioner service history with the seller
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
VERIFYCriticalWater Pump
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 8 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)

My 2015 Hyundai accent started having problems with oil consumption around 65000 miles. I got it checked regularly and the mechanic noticed it after it was having issues accelerating and losing power then cutting off completely. I had to constantly check oil each week or sooner. A couple months later it started losing power on high way and there was a clicking/ticking coming from engine. I pulled over and cut it off. Then drove it slowly (under 30 mph) to car store down the road to add oil but it was fine. Was able to get back home on back roads going slowly. Mechanic told me there oil consumption was a problem with these types of cars and likely causing engine problems. The whole time I had problems the check engine, battery, and oil light would constantly come on and go off. When they hooked it up to see why check engine light was on there were about 15 different codes. One of them being the Variable Valve Solenoid which I ended up replacing both first but still had problems. It would accelerate but there was still a ticking noise upon accelerating. I didn’t drive it for a few weeks then the day I was going to take it back to shop, My husband, his friend, and I were on highway a couple minutes from home and hit a bump and heard a loud thud when the ticking stopped but the car beside us was waving to get our attention that the car was on fire. There was smoke coming through a.c. And you could see it in the rear. My husband quickly pulled over and when I went to get out of passengers side, flames shot up my side of the door so I quickly jumped across out his side. We were able to all get out ok. Luckily there was a firetruck coming down the highway before I could even get ahold of dispatch on 911. The cars front end was engulfed in flames which they were able to put out quickly. The hood was roasted. I’m not sure if they determined the cause and my car is still sitting in the lot where they towed it. Unfortunately I had a lapse in insurance because I was out of work

Around the middle of May 2024 I received a recall notice #23V651000. I made an appointment for approximately 2 weeks on June 5. When I arrived I was told the part was never ordered. Coconut Creek Hyundai said they would order the part and call me in a few days. After not hearing for 2 weeks I went back to Hyundai and was told the part hadn’t come in and to go home and they would call me in a few days. After several more weeks I went back and was told the part still hadn’t arrived. It was about a month and a half and still no part. The service manager told me that Hyundai USA was placing a low priority on my model car and manufacturing that part last after all the other models. It’s now 4 months later and I have never received any call from Coconut Creek Hyundai. When this first happened I contacted both Coconut Creek Hyundai and Hyundai USA. Hyundai USA said they couldn’t interfere with the local dealer even though it’s a Federal Safety Recall! Hyundai Coconut Creek basically blew me off. I think this is deliberate on the part of Hyundai USA to service higher cost vehicles before lower cost. They are playing games with my personal safety and that of my car. They are deliberately defying the recall! I believe whatever compliance procedures you have in place should be enforced to the fullest including fines if necessary. Again they are defying the recall and putting my safety and other Accent owners in jeopardy simply for profits.

ODI #11605678POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE

My 2015 Hyundai Accent started having issues with oil consumption at about 80,000 miles or so. I was having to check and add oil to the vehicle regularly in addition to oil changes. The oil consumption issue got worse as the vehicle got higher in miles, having to check and add oil every 600-1000 miles approximately. I was not aware of the known issue with Hyundai motors and the oil consumption so I was not tracking milage or dates of adding oil unfortunately. At about 100,135 miles, the vehicle suddenly broke down on my way to work. There was no warning other than the oil consumption problem. The car RPMs got very high and the car started decelerating until it wouldn't go forward anymore and was stalled on the side of the road. I had the vehicle towed to a Hyundai dealership and at this time it waiting for the diagnosis, however, they are sure that the head gasket has to be removed (for $500) to get that diagnosis. When the car died, there were no warning lights on at all, however, previously, there had been lights for low oil occasionally, but not always, when the oil was low. Many times when I checked and the oil was low, there was no light that indicated that it was low.

On [XXX] the engine in my 2015 Hyundai Accent suddenly failed while traveling on [XXX] near Milesburg, PA. While attempting to accelerate, the vehicle completely stopped. It was able to be coasted to the side of the roadway, but was unable to be driven after that. It was towed back to South Williamsport to Steve Shannon's garage (where it still sits). After inspection by the mechanics it was noted that there was a hole through the engine (not from puncture) to where they were able to watch the pistons moving from underneath. There were no warnings or issues prior to this event. This event put my brother, sister in law and two toddler nephews in danger as they sat on the side of [XXX] waiting an hour for me to get there to pick them up, as they were borrowing my vehicle to take a family trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo. I believe the speed limit in that area is 65mph. Therefore, traffic (to include semi-trucks) were traveling at least 65mph passing the vehicle and my family on the side of the road. PSP was able to come out and stage with their lights activated until my arrival. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Okay, I'm going to try my best at explaining what I am experiencing. This is my SECOND Hyundai Accent. The first car I had was a 2004 Accent. The second car I have now is a 2015. Both cars have the same exact problem. And I am NOT fixing it. This is definitely a MANUFACTURING ERROR. It's so dangerous too, because my engine could just BLOW UP. Anywhoooo, both cars just BURN OIL LIKE GAS. I repeat, BURN OIL LIKE GAS. I need to check the oil every (at the most) 2 weeks because of how badly oil is just burning up. Also, there is a "Check Engine" code being thrown for something small in the EVAP System. Same cars, 11 years apart. Same problems!? I don't think that is right WHATSOEVER. I have researched ongoing recalls & expired recalls. To my disappointment, I find NOTHING. This is a MAJOR ISSUE. There is absolutely zero irony in 2 cars, being 11 years apart, newer one being a 6 speed manual, having the SAME ISSUES EXACTLY. I was so happy to get a newer one, thinking, "oh there can't be possibly anything wrong with this model". WRONG. Absolutely, positively NO CAR should have to dump almost 5 quarts of oil in your car every 1000 miles or less. I constantly need to buy 1 or 2 quarts of oil BIWEEKLY for this 2015 Hyundai Accent. I can't just get rid of it, cars are expensive! This is absolutely the manufacturers problem. So I am going above their heads to get this taken care of. Monday, I want to try and call Hyundai, either the one near me, or some "hotline". This is unacceptable. My car will show that "low oil pressure" light and my heart just drops. "I just put oil in it!". I say to myself. Do not get me wrong. I love my car. I want my car taken care of. As, when I bought it, Blaise Alexander *apparently* didn't know about it. And they flat out lied about the check engine light! I've had numerous people look at it. They hardly have an answer. Its expensive and labor intensive. Please help me solve this problem. I am NOT the only one. -Morgan Buerk

Airbag light turns on/off. Had dealership investigate and found that it is related to the occupancy sensor mat in the passenger seat. Code was reset (no work performed) and remained off 7 months and now is back on. Could be related to weather (comes on more frequently during fall & winter). Dealer states it is a B1767 code and will need OCS mat replaced.

The contact's niece owns a 2015 Hyundai Accent. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle was stalling. The vehicle also made loud unknown ticking sounds. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the residence. An independent mechanic who diagnosed the failure to be engine related. The contact also stated an unknown dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired; however, only the oil was changed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was unknown.

The steering wheel, when in use in turning, emanates a fairly distinct "clicking" sound, whether turning left or right. I have been told this happens in hyundai and kia vehicles, and that there has been some movement from manufacturer to replace the "Steering Coupler" in some models. I first noticed mine approximately 6 months ago. Will I receive a letter for my dealership to replace mine? I bought new (August 2015) and now have only 57,000 miles on vehicle. I am afraid if this gets worse I might loose ability to steer and that it could happen at the worst possible moment. Can you help? My check engine light came on and stayed on, while the oil light appeared when my car was in idle and the engine began to knock. My AAA approved mechanic determined that the engine had a rod knock and the oil pressure at idle was only 3 psi. In other words, the the engine had completely failed and would have to be replaced. At 36,000 miles !I had the car towed to the local dealership where they confirmed this diagnosis and noted excessive metal debris in the oil and oil pan. My research revealed that an identical engine manufacturing defect had resulted in a class action suit against Hyundai which was settled in 2018. Hyundai was forced to replace the engines with new ones and cover all the owners costs for 3.9 million complainants. They also suffered a huge fine by the NHTSA. Because of Covid lockdowns, I had driven my car very little in 2020, otherwise this catastrophic failure would have occurred well within the the 5 year warranty period. As it was, the warranty had expired approximately 4 months earlier. The dealership contacted Hyundai N.A. and I was offered a "goodwill offer" which allowed me to pay over $3200 for a reconditioned engine with a warranty of only 1 year or 12,000 miles. It is my contention that no reputable car manufacturer would consider an engine life of only 36,000 miles to be acceptable. There is no question that the engine failure was, in any way, my fault and I have the maintenance records to prove it. My "goodwill offer" expired and I towed my car home. Of course, I was fortunate that my engine did not fail on the freeway, at high speed, or burst into flames as some Hyundai engines have been known to do.

1 YEAR AFTER PURCHASING CAR, I HAD A CHECK ENGINE SENSOR SHOW UP. I TOOK IT IN AND A DIAGNOSTIC TEST SHOWED AN O2 SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I REPLACED IT AND THE PART WAS DEFECTIVE, SO I TOOK IT BACK AND THEY REPLACED IT AGAIN, AFTER WHICH IT APPEARED TO BE FINE. THEN LESS THAN 6 MONTHS LATER, IT BEGAN TO RUN POORLY AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PROPERLY AND SEEMED TO NOT BE GETTING FUEL OR OXYGEN OR SOMETHING. I TOOK IT IN AGAIN AND ENDED UP HAVING A CATALYTIC CONVERTER PUT IT FOR OVER $500. IT RAN FINE FOR MAYBE A MONTH AFTER AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AGAIN, IT WAS RUNNING POORLY AGAIN, LOSING POWER ALMOST STALLING OUT WHEN PUSHING ACCELERATOR, IT SMELLED LIKE BURNT OIL. I HAD OIL CHECKED AND CHANGED 3 TIMES DURING THE TIME THIS ALL WAS HAPPENING TOO BECAUSE OF THE SMELL OF BURNING OIL. EACH TIME THE OIL CHANGE WAS DONE THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN SAID IT APPEARED NOT O HAVE BEEN CHANGED BECAUSE IT WAS BLACK AND BURNT AND LOW, WHICH IS NOT POSSIBLE, DUE TO HOW FREQUENTLY I WAS HAVING IT CHECKED AND CHANGED NOT KNOWING WHAT ELSE TO DO!!! The blue line shows 70 total NHTSA complaints filed over 12 years, with the worst year being 2024 (11 complaints).

The amber reliability line averaged 94/100 across the vehicle's life — relatively stable, with the lowest point of 88/100 in 2018.

Notably, despite 70 complaints on file, no recall has been issued — either the defect pattern has not met NHTSA's threshold for a formal campaign, or a recall may be forthcoming.

Red dots on the amber line flag 4 years (2016, 2018, 2020, 2022) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
