Monitor Deferred Risk
The engine/powertrain system is the most-reported problem for the 2017 SUBARU WRX — 19 NHTSA complaints (36% of all filings). Prioritize it in a pre-purchase inspection.
⚠No odometer data on record. Items marked VERIFY below are age-based maintenance reminders — general guidance, not confirmed findings for this specific vehicle. Confirm actual mileage and service history with the seller.
COMMONLY REPORTEDCriticalEngine/Powertrain
19 owner complaints · 36% of all filings
Inspect the engine/powertrain system before purchase — the most-reported problem for the 2017 SUBARU WRX
Owners of the 2017 SUBARU WRX report engine/powertrain issues more than most other systems. Complaints concentrated in one area often signal a systemic weakness worth a targeted pre-purchase inspection.
COMMONLY REPORTEDCriticalElectrical
17 owner complaints · 32% of all filings · 3 crash-involved · 2 injuries
Inspect the electrical system before purchase — the 2nd most-reported problem for the 2017 SUBARU WRX

VERIFYCriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Typical interval: 120,000 mi / 10 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify timing chain tensioner service history with the seller
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
VERIFYCriticalWater Pump
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 8 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify water pump service history with the seller
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
VERIFYHighTransmission Fluid / Service
Typical interval: 60,000 mi / 5 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify transmission fluid / service service history with the seller
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
VERIFYHighDifferential / Transfer Case Fluid
Typical interval: 50,000 mi / 4 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify differential / transfer case fluid service history with the seller
On 4WD/AWD vehicles, neglected differential or transfer case fluid causes metal-on-metal wear. Replacement costs $1,500–$4,000.
VERIFYHighCoolant Flush
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 5 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify coolant flush service history with the seller
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
VERIFYModerateSpark Plugs (iridium/platinum)
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 8 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify spark plugs (iridium/platinum) service history with the seller
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
VERIFYModerateFuel Injectors
Typical interval: 120,000 mi / 10 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify fuel injectors service history with the seller
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.

Experienced catastrophic engine failure with no known cause. The car had been inspected and had an oil change 3,000 miles prior to the incident. Thankfully, I had already exited the thruway and was on a quiet backroad but if this had happened 15 minutes earlier on the thruway this could have been a much different story.

Hit a deer. Airbags did not deploy, however I have reasonable suspicion to believe my head hit the A pillar during impact.

ODI #11697979AIR BAGSCRASH1 INJURY

Going about 55mph, I struck a deer head on. It struck towards the center, but more so on the passenger side. During the impact, no airbags deployed, however, based off IIHS videos, it seems likely that they should have. Additionally, I have reasonable suspicion to believe I hit my head on the pillar of the door, which would have been unlikely if the airbags deployed.

Likely secondary air injection pump and/or its related relays, CEL P2444 came on 3 separate times. November 2024, brought it in to get replaced under warranty, came on again the day after picking her up in December 2024 due to faulty pump, didn’t get to bring her back in until March 1st 2025, fixed part again, brought her home [XXX]. Car engulfed in flames 10 days later on [XXX]. I do have the car’s ECU available for scan to check for previous codes. I could have been killed in a car fire, the building my car was in front of could have been turned to ash. No, the problem has not been reproduced, the car is totaled and in a pile of ash. Yes, the vehicle was inspected by police and fire force after the incident. The CEL light had come back on that morning. 9:11 am, came on, parked at 9:28am, car was on fire by 9:52am. I was parked and in an appointment when the cops came in in order to evacuate us because my car was in flames. Please contact Romano Subaru for information on my car, I do not have all of the paperwork available to me, but all of the work was done through that dealership. 315-475-7933 INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The current issues with my recently purchased used vehicle are as follows: Clutch, odometer tampering, steering rack, 2 axle leaks, electrical issues, inspection issues. I tried to see if the dealership that I bought the car from is willing to fix these issues they keep going back and forth with me on these issues even though I just recently purchased the car stating that I have to pay for it. I purchased this car [XXX]. There were several issues with this car prior to purchase that were not disclosed when I purchased it. The dealership that I bought the car from, highline car connection/Yankee Auto sales, insisted we buy an extended warranty. Upon inspection at Dan Perkins Subaru, one of the biggest safety issues with this vehicle is the clutch, I was informed that the clutch cover was missing and there were aftermarket bolts used, I was informed that the clutch is a normal wear and tear item such as an oil change and because of these two issues my warranty will not cover fixing the clutch. As you can see in my documents I just recently purchased this vehicle and had it for 28 days. I also noticed that there was odometer tampering, I reviewed the paperwork the dealership gave me for the carfax report and I went online to retrieve my own carfax report, there are several discrepancies in which I included with my documents. My vehicle has been in the shop since December 6th 2024 it is not safe to drive on the road in the condition it is which is the same condition the car was sold to me in. For the last week I have been going back and forth with the original dealership the insurance company Allstate with the warranty and Dan Perkins Subaru trying to figure out a way to get my car safe on the road and no one is willing to assist me properly. Please review the documents and get back to me at your earliest convenience thank you for your assistance with these issues. 1, At about 12000 miles the car's windshield wipers stop working. And did not ever work again for the past several years. Wipers which was checked the motor was replaced to admission to the key was replaced and wiper still don't work. 2, About 24000 miles Was turning the vehicle around on a inclined road in the mountains went to pull forward and the steering wheel would not work anymore which resulted in me crashing into a ravine dropping about 10 feet off the side of the cliff. 3, 33000 miles time issue occurred I was doing 75 on the Kansas turnpike and a curb came up as I entered the term for the curve that wheel would not turn and I kept going straighitting the guard railBut just only grazing it for I regained power to my steering at the last moment. And now currently again. dealership still cannot fix issue Instead they just charge me outrageous prices for not fixing anything and then threatened to call the cops on me if I don't pay it or agree to the service department's terms this has happened at 2 different dealerships.

Engine failure on the highway driving 60mph , Rod bearing failed causing engine to be destroyed (new block , new pistons, new head needed). Car was under warranty . Dealership filed claim but subaru of America denied claim giving erroneous reasons for denial . Subaru of America has been sued for this before http://www.enginebearings.settlementclass.com/ but they are stating my car does not fall under lawsuit.

ODI #11500574FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

I have a 2017 Subaru WRX that stalls while driving (including at highway speeds) 2 to 3 times every day on my commute to work through the mountains. This has led the vehicle to skid sideways and lose control. When I looked into this problem, I found that Subaru has a recall on its fuel pumps for 2018 to 2020 Subaru WRX vehicles but somehow my VIN does not appear to be considered AN affected vehicle. This issue is life-threatening, and I believe the model years eligible for recall, must not have captured one year earlier model with presumably the same faulty fuel pump. I believe the recall needs to be expanded.

ODI #11497425ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

The Direct Injection Engine causes valves to become coated in carbon build-up, unlike indirect injections which constantly clean the valves. This issue then results in the sudden loss of power and engine stalls (often when attempting to accelerate from low speeds) which are extremely dangerous when attempting to merge or turn in traffic. Subaru has not addressed the issue but based on online searches it appears to be a major issue for all 2.0l direct injection engines.

ODI #11488486ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

I own a 2017 Subaru WRX. On 8/10/2019 I had the battery replaced at the dealership because it does for no reason. The battery died overnight and I had to jump the car to get it to the dealership. This happened again and the battery replaced at the dealership on 9/29/2022. This time the battery got weaker each time I started the car over a period of 3 days then one day it didn't start. I had to jump to get to the dealership. They reaplaced the battery and I said I didn't want to pay because this is the 2nd time it's been replaced in 4 years. He told me to join a class action settlement for defective batteries.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the dealer then confirmed that the parts were not available for the recall repair. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. I had parked my car in front of my house and did not use it for 2 days. When I went to drive the car, it with not turn on. I had to call AAA to jump the car and I let it run for 30 minutes then drive it for the next 30 minutes. I parked the car again and 6 hours later went to go out and it would not start again. Called AAA again and had them come jump start the car. Both AAA mechanics said this is a problematic battery. I went to my Subaru dealer in Rye, NY and they said my battery is fine and I had a loose negative terminal. This was a lie and incorrect. The battery was first put it on 7/15/2019 and this was less than 2 years later that it died on me twice. WINDOWS SCRATCH JUST FROM DUST SO THEY LOOK HAZY AND WINDSHIELDS COST ALMOST $2000 WITH ALL SAFETY CAMERA JUNK. ONLY ONE AIRCON VENT BLOWS COLD AIR WHILE ALL OTHERS JUST BLOW AIR. THIS CAR WAS A LEMON BEFORE 2018 ENDED. SUBARU REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE PROBLEMS WHILE UNDER EXTENDED BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY. I TRIED TO FILE LEMON LAW AND LOST BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T SAVE MY COMPLAINT VISITS IN COMPUTER SYSTEM. IM CERTAIN THAT WAS INTENTIONAL SINCE THEY ARE THE LEMON KINGS! SUBARU IS A TERRIBLE COMPANY NOW AND I RECOMMEND YOU DON'T OWN ONE. THE SURGING IS VERY DANGEROUS AS THE CAR LITERALLY HOPS AND SOMETIMES YOU PUSH ACCELERATOR AND NOTHING HAPPENS FOR WAY TOO LONG. DANGEROUS WHEN PULLING INTO TRAFFIC. FIGHTING WITH WINDOWS WHILE DRIVING IS ALSO DANGEROUS. LED LIGHTS ARE THE WRONG COLOR SO IT'S HARD TO SEE MANY THINGS AT NIGHT. BOUGHT THE CAR AND EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM DEALER USED WITH 33K MILES 11/21/19 A COUPLE MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE I WAS GETTING ONTO THE FREEWAY AFTER WORK (6AM) AND THE RPMS WERE GOING UP BUT MY SPEED WAS NOT. CAR HAD 38K MILES. I PERSONALLY ONLY HAD 4K MILES SINCE OWNERSHIP AND I WOULDN'T THINK THE CLUTCH WAS SHOT DUE BEING A REGULAR MANUAL DRIVER. I USE THE VEHICLE TO COMMUTE ABOUT 40-50 MILES DAILY. 3/4/20 WAS THE DAY I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP. DEALER DID NOTHING TO HELP FINANCIALLY. CALLED SOA AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD HELP PARTIALLY PAY FOR THE REPAIR. 13K MILES AFTER THE CLUTCH REPLACEMENT THROW OUT BEARING STARTED CHIRPING WHEN CLUTCH WASN'T ENGAGED. 2/26/2021 - AFTER AN OIL CHANGE I NOTCED A FLUID ON THE BOTTOM OF MY TRANSMISSION AND WENT ONLINE LOOKING TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG. IN MY SEARCH FOR THAT I FOUND SUBARU SERVICE BULLETINS AND SEEN INFORMATION THAT THEY HAD BETTER PARTS THAT WERE AVAILABLE TO INSTALL ON 2015-18 WRXS. I WAS NOT OFFERED ANY OTHER OPTIONS OTHER THAN PAY FOR REPLACEMENT OR DRIVE IT BROKEN. AFTER FINDING OUT THAT INFORMATION I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS THEN INFORMED THAT FOR THE CLUTCH PARTS, IT'S ONLY FOR PROBLEMS OCCURRING IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS, AND THERE'S NOTHING THEY WERE GOING TO DO FOR ME. AS FOR THE THROW OUT BEARING I WAS TOLD IF I BROUGHT IT IN WITHIN 12K MILES FROM THE REPLACEMENT THEY COULD HAVE FIXED IT, BUT SINCE I'M AT 53K MILES (15K MILES SINCE REPLACEMENT) ONCE AGAIN, NOTHING. AS FOR THE FLUID ON THE TRANSMISSION THEY ROUTED IT TO THE CV AXLE AND ACCORDING TO THE PAPERWORK IT WAS DEEMED "ACCEPTABLE" PER SUBARU. I'VE OWNED A MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLE SINCE 2007 AND NEVER HAD ANY CLUTCH ISSUES THAT I'VE HAD WITH THIS CAR. AND BEING TOLD THAT SQUEEKS AND LEAKS ARE ACCEPTABLE IS EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING.

THROW OUT BEARING GAVE OUT TWICE AT WITHIN FEW THOUSAND MILES IN LESS THAN 1 YEAR. VEHICLE WAS LESS THAN 36,000 MILES. DEALERSHIP REPAIRED IT TWICE. SYMPTOM WAS RATTLING NOISE THAT RESOLVED WHEN CLUTCH PEDAL WAS BEING PRESSED. RATTLING NOISE PRESENT IN GEAR AND IN NEUTRAL.

I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAD THE CAR IN 6TH GRADE. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE DASH DISPLAY TELLS ME I'M IN 4TH GEAR INSTEAD OF 6TH, AND I DIDN'T EVEN TOUCH ANYTHING. THEN THE TACOMETER STARTED BOUNCING AROUND AND WHEN I PUSHED THE GAS PEDDLE, IT SOUNDED AND FELT LIKE IT WAS OUT OF GEAR. ALL OF A SUDDEN SMOKE CAME POURING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND INTO THE CAR. SO I PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY. HAD A TOW TRUCK COME GET MY CAR, AND THE CLUTCH IS FRIED! UNKNOWN WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM. IT HAD SOME THIS TO ME ONCE BEFORE, BUT ONLY THE PART WHERE IT TOLD ME ON THE DASH THAT IT WAS IN A DIFFERENT GEAR THAN IT WAS IN. THAT TIME, I TOOK IT OUT OF GEAR, PUT IT BACK IN, AND IT WAS FINE. THE TIME IT BROKE DOWN, TAKING IT OUT OF GEAR AND PUTTING IT BACK IN DIDN'T DO ANY GOOD.

ODI #11297868STEERING

I RECENTLY EXPERIENCED A STEERING RACK FAILURE DUE TO LEAKING SEALS ON THE GEAR ASSEMBLY ON MY CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED 2017 SUBARU STI. THE POWER STEERING FAILED TO OPERATE BOTH IN MOTION ON THE HIGHWAY AND AT SLOW SPEEDS IN A PARKING LOT AND LOCAL STREETS. THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST MAKES IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO SAFELY CONTROL AND CHANGE OF DIRECTION FOR THE VEHICLE. BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE AND THAT OF MANY OTHERS I KNOW IN THE SUBARU COMMUNITY THIS IS A COMMON FAILURE POINT ON THE LAST TWO GENERATIONS OF THESE CARS. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY SUBARU CONTINUES TO IGNORE THIS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS PART FAILURE AND HAS DONE NOTHING TO HELP OWNERS LIKE MYSELF WHEN THE ISSUE OCCURS.

PAMPERED 2017 SUBARU WRX, AUTO TRANSMISSION, 61,545 HIGHWAY MILES AND PROOF OF OIL CHANGES BETWEEN 5,000 AND 7,000 MILES, SYNTHETIC 5-30. CAR IDLING AT STOP LIGHT WHEN TAPPING NOISE STARTED AND THEN OIL LIGHT LITE UP BUT QUICKLY WENT OUT. PULLED OVER TO CHECK OIL AND FOUND OIL LEVEL MID LEVEL IN SAFE ZONE. ENGINE DIDN'T BURN OR LEAK OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. GILES SUBARU IN LAFAYETTE LA SAID THE ENGINE "MUST HAVE BEEN RUN LOW ON OIL." THEY BELIEVE IT STARTED WITH THE #2 ROD BEARING GOING OUT. I'VE BEEN A MECHANIC FOR THE LAST 38 YEARS, I CHECK OIL LEVELS OFTEN. SHORT BLOCK REPLACEMENT WAS $9,957.50. REPAIR TOOK 31 DAYS. GILES SUBARU ALSO EXTENDS THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY TO LIFETIME IF YOU PROVE PROPER OIL CHANGES AND GO IN FOR AN INSPECTION EVERY TWO YEARS. DENIED MY CLAIM FOR NOT COMING FOR TWO YEAR INSPECTION. SUBARU RATED MY 2.0 TURBOCHARGED ENGINE AT 268 HORSEPOWER WITH THE 15.9 PSI OF BOOST. RESEARCH VERIFIED ITS THE ONLY CAR SUBARU USES THIS ENGINE IN. SUBARU'S CROSSTREK USES THIS 2.0 BUT AS A NON TURBOCHARGED ENGINE RATED AT 152 HP. NO OTHER CAR IN SUBARU'S LINE UP HAS THAT MUCH HORSEPOWER RATED PER LITER. RESEARCH SHOWS SUBARU ADDED A TURBOCHARGER TO THEIR 152 HORSEPOWER ENGINE BUT DID NOT UPGRADE THE LUBRICATION SYSTEM TO HANDLE THE HIGHER STRESSES. SUBARU HAS LUBRICATION PROBLEMS WITH OTHER ENGINES AND HAS THREE CLASS ACTION SUITS NOW. I SEEN MY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS WARRANTY WAS INCREASED BY SUBARU RECENTLY AND DEMANDED BY A COURT TO COVER REPAIRS PAST AND FUTURE UNTIL 100,000 MILE WARRANTY. NOT THAT THEY'LL ACTUALLY PAY FOR IT IF IT BREAKS OR ANYTHING. THEY'LL SAY YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG. SHOULDN'T THIS BE ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE? SUBARU WAS DEMANDED TO NOTIFY THE CURRENT OWNERS OF 2017 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS BUT I HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANYTHING. IS SUBARU PRACTICING GOOD BUSINESS? IS THE GOVERNMENT MAKING SURE THEY DO BUSINESS FAIRLY?

Chart Analysis

The blue line shows 53 total NHTSA complaints filed over 9 years, with the worst year being 2021 (10 complaints).

The amber reliability line averaged 92/100 across the vehicle's life — relatively stable, with the lowest point of 86/100 in 2025.

Notably, despite 53 complaints on file, no recall has been issued — either the defect pattern has not met NHTSA's threshold for a formal campaign, or a recall may be forthcoming.

Red dots on the amber line flag 5 years (2018, 2019, 2020, 2023, 2025) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
