Deferred Failure Risk
Components and defects approaching or past their known service milestones
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.
One failed component has created stress on connected systems. Repair costs compound quickly — a $500 fix can become $3,000+ if cascade damage is ignored.

Black Nissan exterior driving recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic brake, checking several cars cut me off. Break check the FedEx truck in front of me twice. Was able to Veer to the right, avoiding directful impact with the FedEx truck in front of me. Airbags did not deploy, and my head cracked. The windshield seat belt was on as I had bruising on my ribs and across my chest from the seat belt
Car has stopped in middle of the road and engine just stalled. The battery light keeps flashing on and off even after alternator as been changed
My car is stalling, shaking, shuddering, not accelerating and downshifting while I am on the highway almost killing me while attempting to inch my way across the lanes to the shoulder. With NO WARNING my vehicle completely broke down with my children in the car one is Non Verbal and on the Autism Spectrum with a serious heart condition- I myself am clinically diagnosed with PTSD and the terror I have experienced is absolutely devastating! I have made multiple calls with no help and no assistance whatsoever!
Airbags did not deploy.
While accelerating the gas gage goes up but there is resistance when pressing on gas. The vehicle does not accelerate right away and there is a drag before the vehicle gets up to speed. It takes off really slow.
I bought this car from market place face book , the seller deleted his account. After the sale, so I felt suspicious and search in the google using rhe vin number and found out the mileage on VIN check page doesn’t match the number in the car
WITHIN 16,000 MILES OF OWNING MY I NOTICED IT WOULD RANDOMLY STALL SOMETIMES AT THE STOP LIGHT OF AN INTERSECTION. IT DOESN'T TAKE LONG TO START BACK UP EVEN ACCELERATING . SEVERAL MONTHS WENT BY WHERE THE ISSUE WAS NO LONGER PRESENT BUT OVER THE PAST FEW MONTH IT STARTED AGAIN. I GET TUNE UPS TWICE A YEAR
Took the car in for routine cvt fluid and filter change. Mechanic completed the task Took the vehicle for a road test and at highway speed the cvt transmission shifted to a higher gear and revved the motor rpms immediately over 6000 to 7000. Threw it into neutral and took back to the shop. It was diagnosed from their the transmission was ruined.
Starter clicks, doesn't turn engine. Tried rotating engine, engine will not turn past a certain angle. Removed spark plugs for cylinder inspection. 1,2, and 3 ok. Cylinder 4 spark plug extremely difficult to remove. Ground strap has been impacted by debris. Borescope inspection shows two broken off exhaust valves laying on the piston. Valve cover removed to inspect timing chain and sprokets. Chain and sprokets are intact. Engine reassembled besides cylinder 4 spark plug and coil pack.
I got an accirdent Jan 9,2025 and my car was totally wreck. Im in body pain and therapy right now and in working status report because of my situation. The airbag didnt deployed at the time of accident. Mitsubishi outlander has 7 airbags , but nothing has comes out. This is very dangerous. God is really works for miracles coz me and my daughter are alive even were having pain in our body. I have photo and video inside and out of vehicle that airbags didnt deployed.
My parking brake has stopped working/is completely locked up (like what is descrived in the recall, but my vin isn't included in thr recall list), and the airbags were missing at time of sell.
Rear brake calipers sticking constantly. Emergency brake also sticking or loosing tension.
I bought this car used less than 30 days ago. It had 21362 miles on it. It made a weird nose when putting it into drive. Thought it might be a heatshield. Took it to a mitsubishi dealership for an outstanding recall. Ask them to check underneath. The exhaust pipe was rusted out. 3000 dollars to repair. The dealership didn't believe it cost that much so they used a mechanic they new to fix the issue 10/15/2024. We are not impressed with that repair. It seems the exhaust is not covered under the extended warranty. We feel that mitsubishi should cover this because they do have a warranty of 5-6 years for the exhaust system. A car with this low mileage should not already have the exhaust rusted out.
Front calipers made a ratting noise, every time we drive over small street cracks or bumps, this happen when my car reached about 45000 miles, we replace the calipers now there is no more ratting noise.
Cannot remove key after car is off and in parked and engine lights keeps coming on and off throwing off a code making it hard for car to start sometimes
Vehicle will not go into reverse from drive. Must put vehicle in park then to reverse or it won’t back up.

I AM A RIDESHARE DRIVER. ON FRIDAY, APRIL 23, 2021 PASSENGERS BEGAN TO COMPLAIN THAT THE RIGHT-SIDE SEAT BELT (ON THE 2ND ROW OF SEATS) WOULD NOT FASTEN. AFTER ARRANGING FOR PEOPLE TO MOVE AROUND TO THE OTHER SIDE (LEFT-HAND SEAT) FOR A WHILE, I FINALLY QUIT DRIVING TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUE MYSELF. AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR THE BUCKLE, I GAVE UP AND STARTED CALLING AROUND FOR THE PART--BUT COULD NOT FIND IT. FINALLY I NOTICED A RECALL NOTICE ONLINE FOR THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE IN 2014-2019 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDERS. ON MONDAY (APRIL 26) I CALLED SCOTT ELDER MITSUBISHI IN CEDAR PARK, TEXAS TO SCHEDULE THE RECALL REPAIR, BUT WAS TOLD THAT MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. THEY ALSO DID NOT HAVE THE PART AND COULD NOT OBTAIN ONE FOR AT LEAST A WEEK. I THEN CALLED THE MANUFACTURER DIRECTLY TO LEARN WHY MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED FOR THE RECALL EVEN THOUGH IT IS A 2019 AND HAS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL NOTICE. THEY COULD NOT GIVE ME A SATISFACTORY ANSWER, NOR ANY ALTERNATIVE RECOURSE TO RESOLVE MY ISSUE. AS STATED ABOVE, I AM A RIDESHARE DRIVER. I CANNOT DO MY JOB WITH AN UNUSABLE SEAT BELT. SWITCHING PASSENGERS TO THE OTHER SEAT WON'T ALWAYS WORK BECAUSE I OFTEN PICK UP 3 OR MORE PASSENGERS. EACH DAY I AM WITHOUT THE USE OF THE VEHICLE FOR WORK IS COSTING ME $250-$300 PER DAY (NOT COUNTING BONUSES).
WHEN USING THE BRAKE AUTO HOLD I STEPPED ON THE GAS WHILE SCRATCHING MY SIDE AT THE SAME TIME TO CROSS THE ROAD. I ACCIDENTALLY UNBUCKLED MY SEAT BELT WHICH THEN CAUSED THE BRAKE AUTO HOLD TO DISENGAGE AND AUTOMATICALLY APPLY THE PARKING BRAKE. THIS CAUSED MY CAR TO STOP DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I COULD NOT DISENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE UNTIL I REBUCKLED MY SEAT BELT.
THE EPB (EMERGENCY PARKING BREAK) WAS SOME HOW ACTIVATED, NOT SURE IF BY ACCIDENT OR WIRING ISSUE AND NOW WILL NOT DISENGAGE. I CANNOT DRIVE MY VEHICLE AND HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET IT INTO THE DEALER FOR 3 WEEKS.
ON DECEMBER 23, 2020 I WAS DRIVING APRX 30 MPH. I BREAK TO GO OVER A TRAIN TRACK BRINGING MY SPEED TO ROUGHLY 20MPH. I HEARD A NOISE THAT SOUNDED LIKE METAL BUT I FIGURED IT WAS FROM THE TRAIN TRACKS. THERE WAS A WIDE BEND A FEW FEET UP THE WAY. I GET MY SPEED TO 40MPH AND START GOING AROUND THE BEND. I SLOW DOWN AND TRY TURNING TO TURN THE WHEEL. I COULD TURN THE WHEEL BUT THE CAR WAS NOT MOVING IN THE DIRECTION I WAS TURNING. I PRESS THE BREAK BUT I BEGAN TO HYDROPLANE CAUSING ME AND MY 3 CHILDREN TO CRASH INTO A HUGE DITCH DRAIN. UPON FARTHER INSPECTION THE TOWER IDENTIFIED THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT WAS MY WHEEL ALIGNMENT. MY WHEELS WERE NOT POINTING THE SAME DIRECTION MEANING SOMETHING WITH THE STEERING BROKE (POSSIBLY THE NOISE I HEARD.) I HAVE RESEARCHED SINCE THIS DAY AND FOUND THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUES WITH THEIR OUTLANDERS STARTING IN 2008.
WHEN DRIVING IN THE RAIN THE CAR HYDROPLANED ON ME ON 5 SEPARATE OCCASIONS. IT HAPPENED TO ME WHEN AT A MILD TURN AT FREE WAY SPEEDS AND SOMETIMES WHEN STRONG WINDS HIT THE VEHICLE. LOSS OF TRACTIONS IS FELT AND THE CAR WANDERS INTO A DIFFERENT LANE. BREAKING PERFORMANCE WAS AFFECTED AS WELL. THE STOCK TIRES THAT CAME WITH THE CAR PERFORM POORLY IN THE RAIN WHEN DRIVING AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. OVER ALL THE CAR IS GREAT AND THE TIRES SHOULD BE INSPECTED. I LEARNED THAT I WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO EXPERIENCED THIS AND DECIDED TO CONTACT NHTSA.
WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD 55 MPH WAS THE SPEED LIMIT THE DING WENT OFF AIR BAG LIGHT FLASHED IN RED BUT QUICKLY WENT OFF. DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO READ WHAT IT SAID JUST SEEN AIRBAG ON THE DASHBOARD WHERE THE SPEED IS BIG LETTERS.
MY REAR PASSENGER TIRE WENT FLAT, WHILE REMOVING THE STUDS , ONE BROKE OFF, THIS IS A NEW 2019 VEHICLE, THIS VEHICLE IT TOO NEW TO HAVE THE STUD BREAK OFF MY VEHICLE WAS IN MY DRIVEWAY
I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE ON NOVEMBER 19TH.IT HAD 32 MILES WHEN I PULLED OFF THE CAR LOT. IN JANUARY, NEW BREAKS HAD TO BE PUT ON IT DUE TO WEAR AND LOUD SOUND. THEY WERE REPLACED. IN FEBRUARY, TERRIBLE SOUND COMING FROM BREAKS AGAIN. TAKEN TO SHOP, WORKED ON THEM AND ADVISED THEY JUST NEEDED TO BE OILED. BROUGHT BACK TO SHOP EARLY MARCH, SAME PROBLEM, THE WHOLE BREAK SYSTEM WAS REPLACED. NOW HERE IS IT MARCH 23RD AND THE SAME THING IS STARTING TO HAPPEN AGAIN, SCREETCHING, LOUD SOUND COMING FROM BREAKS.
I WENT TO TURN ON MY CALL AND MY BACK WINDOW ON THE PASSENGER SIDE SHATTERED. IT DIDN'T HAVE PHYSICAL DAMAGE TO IT AND IT SHATTER IN AND OUT IT WAS LIKE IT WASN'T INSTALLED CORRECTLY OR SOMETHING. IT DAMAGED MY PAIN ON THE DOOR AND THE INSIDE PLASTIC AS WELL.
I WAS WAITING IN RED LIGHT BETWEEN SUNRISE BLVD AND US1 WHEN A VEHICLE IN WRONG WAY CRASH MY VEHICLE IN THE FRONT. THE WHEEL AIR BAG DEPLOYED WRONG. I SAW THE RIGHT PART OF THE AIR BAG FLAT WHILE THE LEFT PART WAS FINE. IT CAUSED INJURES IN MY CHIN AND TONGUE, 5 RIBS, IN THE RIGHT PART OF MY BODY, BROKEN AND STERNUM BROKEN TOO. CAUSING POSSIBLE CINTURILLA IN MY HEART AND BRUISES IN MY LUNGES.
BRAKE ACTIVATED AND AT A COMPLETE STOP, THEN THE CAR STARTED MOVING FROM A COMPLETE STOP WHILE FOOT IS ALL THE WAY ON THE BRAKE. CAR DID NOT REGISTER SPEED AT THIS TIME.
ON 12/13/2019 MY DAUGHTER HAD A ACCIDENT IN 2019 MISHIBISHI OUTLANDER SHE HIT FENCE FENCE POST ELECTRICITY BOX AND 2 SIGNS DOING DAMAGE ALL AROUND THE VEHICLE HER SEAT BELT NORE MY NEWPHEWS SEAT BELT LOCKED UP AND SHE HIT HER HEAD ON THE STEERING WHEEL THE PASSENGER IN THE VEHICLES SEAT BEAT LOCKED UP THE BACK SEAT BELT DIDNT LOCK UP I HAVE ALOT OF PICTURES BUT WILL ONLY ALLOW ME TO UPLOAD ONE
FRONT DRIVERS SEAT IS LOOSE. IT IS ROCKING FROM THE BASE. I PURCHASED THE CAR NEW
I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE 11/3/19, TRADED IN MY 2016 MITSUBISHI FOR 2019 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER. 3 DAYS LATER MY LIGHTS WENT OUT AND I TOOK THE CAR TO VICTORY MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP IN THE BRONX AND THEY SAID IT WAS A LOOSE FUSE. THEY TIGHTED THE FUSE AND MY LIGHTS CAME ON. ON 11/26/19, I WAS ON THE CROSS BRONX HIGH WAY IN TRAFFIC AND DROVE BUT COULD NOT STOP THE CAR. MY BRAKES FAILED. I GOT OFF THE HIGHWAY AND CALLED THE POLICE AND GEICO. THE POLICE DID NOT COME AND I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO JUNIORS AUTOMOTIVE CENTER IN THE BRONX. MY GEICO ADJUSTER WILL INSPECT THE CAR ON 12/4/19. I SHOULD NOT BE GOING THROUGH THIS. I KNOW MY CAR WILL EVENTUALLY BE REPAIRED BUT I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE CAR.
WHEN TURNING ON THERE IS A KNOCKING SOUND. ALSO WHEN DRIVING IT SLIDES TO RIGHT. WITHOUT TURNING. KNOCKING SOUND ALL THE TIME. BRAKING IT SLIDES.

Component Failure Cascade Risk
Known patterns where one defect leads to more severe downstream failures
▸ Valve and piston damage — timing chain/belt failure causes immediate catastrophic engine damage at any speed
▸ Complete transmission failure — repair costs $3,000–$8,000+; vehicle may become undriveable
Complaint & Reliability Timeline
Annual complaints (blue) vs. composite reliability score (amber) — recall years marked in red
The blue line shows 47 total NHTSA complaints filed over 9 years, with the worst year being 2024 (11 complaints).
The amber reliability line averaged 91/100 across the vehicle's life — relatively stable, with the lowest point of 83/100 in 2025.
The red dashed line marks recall issuance — the first recall came 4 years after owners began filing complaints, a lag that indicates the manufacturer was slow to formally acknowledge these problems.
Red dots on the amber line flag 5 years (2019, 2020, 2021, 2025, 2026) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
