ODI #11753735POWER TRAIN,ENGINE

The vehicle experienced a catastrophic internal engine failure caused by connecting rod bearing failure. Prior to the failure, the engine developed abnormal internal knocking/noise, indicating bearing deterioration. The engine is currently available for inspection. While traveling approximately 55 mph on [XXX], the check engine warning light illuminated. Within about one mile, the engine rapidly lost power and developed a severe knocking noise. The sudden loss of power at highway speed created a serious safety hazard by reducing my ability to maintain traffic speed and safely maneuver the vehicle. I had my child in the vehicle, and both we and surrounding motorists were placed at risk of a collision while I attempted to move to exit traffic. The failure has been confirmed by an independent repair facility, Absolute Automotive LLC in Parker, Colorado. Their inspection determined the engine suffered internal damage due to connecting rod bearing failure. I have the engine replacement invoice, technician's diagnostic notes, and photographs documenting the engine damage. The vehicle has not been inspected by Honda. I contacted Honda to report the failure and request assistance, but I was informed there was no recall for the 2021 Honda Passport equipped with the 3.5L V6 engine and that Honda would not provide assistance unless a recall existed. Before the engine failed completely, the engine developed abnormal internal knocking/noise. While driving on [XXX], the check engine warning light illuminated, and within approximately one mile the engine lost power and produced a heavy knocking noise, rendering the vehicle unsafe to operate. I am submitting this complaint because a sudden internal engine failure resulting in loss of power at highway speeds presents a significant safety hazard and should be investigated. Honda has a recall on certain vin numbers for the starter. My starter i was told to replace at a $2500 fee from reggie jackson honda in raleigh nc. I had to visit the dealership 3 times, they said its the battery, replaced the battery at my cost, now they said its the starter. They said there is a recall but my vin number was not included in the recall. The starter is worn out from the auto start and stop feature at stop lights. My issue is it will stop at a stop light and it wont start again then a warning comes on the screen about collision detection issue, then the warning goes away quickly and eventually i will get it to start but it is a safety issue that honda is aware of. I am asking honda to do partial credit on repair costs, but i dont understand why my vin number was excluded. The managers name was ruben lopez who informed me that the starter is causing issues, and sometimes its the battery, but that my vin wasnt covered. I just want my vehicle to not get stuck at after stopping in traffic when honda knows of the issue it should be covered for a lifetime warranty or recall. The stopping issue where it wont start again happens approximately 1 time per month, and seems to be in warmer weather but i cannot confirm this nor do i keep an exact log of when it happens. Thank you.

ODI #11751267LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

The multipurpose front camera on my 2021 Honda Passport failed without warning, causing mutliple Honda sensing safety systems to become inoperative. Warning messages appeared indicating failures of the collision mitigation braking system, adaptaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist system, road departure mitigation system, and other driver assistance features. The vehicle has not been involved in a front end collision and the camera failure was diagnosed by a Honda dealership as requiring replacement of the multipurpose camera assembly. This is a significant safety concern because the failure of a single component disables numerous advanced driver assistance systems that are designed to help prevent crashes. I have learned that similar front camera failures have been reported by owners of other Honda models using comparable Honda sensing technology. Because this failure affects critical safety systems and appears to be more than an isolated incident, I am submitting this complaint so it can be documented and investigated.

4th occurrence. Car fails to start. The instrument display reads: AUTO ENGINE IDLE STOP SYSTEM PROBLEM. Electrical system including radio, A/C etc were working. (Including the car alarm which begins honking the horn as soon as I open the door) Repeated attempts to start the car failed to do anything except to annoy anyone within earshot as the horn kept honking! Roadside assistance was not able to get the car started either so it was towed to the dealer. I've had the car into the Honda dealer for recalls but this problem has not been solved.

ODI #11735989ENGINE

My 2021 Honda Passport Elite suffered cataphoric engine failure at 90,000 miles. The 6th cylinder bearing was missing when my vehicle was towed into Honda for diagnosis after my engine shut off while I was traveling 55 mph. I had no warnings for this failure including no engine noises and no check engine lights. I had to have a new engine put in my vehicle and Honda refused to cover the cost at 100% because they stated there were no open recalls at this time. I feel this is a manufacturer engine defect that is the same as the open recall defect Honda has on the 2017, 2018, and 2019 Pilots with the same 3.5-liter V6. The engine failure descriptions are exactly the same.

The CMBS malfunction lights come on every time I start my car. The only time it went off was when I drove straight for about 15 minutes without stopping at a light It started a few months ago out of nowhere. I thought it was my camera, I took it to a Honda dealer and they said I needed to buy another camera for 2500 dollars. I don't have 2500 dollars they told me I could drive it but I won't have that safety feature. I only had this car 6 months and already the camera is acting up. Another dealer said it could be the battery. I really don't know why at this point that everyone is having these issues with the Honda sensing camera. I think it is a safety issue because it should be working at all times

Driving to work in normal speeds and conditions. The emergency braking enabled and slammed on the brakes to my car - despite there being no threat or need. The brake was with such force that I jerked forward. This is the third time this has happened with this car in the past week. Car is available for inspection if needed. The car has not yet been inspected by Honda for this situation.

I bought my car in 2021. Two weeks ago 4-5 dashboard signs came up on my screen. I contacted local dealer and they said they need nearly $3000 to fix it. I told them it’s a safety issue and they refused to budge. I complained to Honda through X and they refused to help me. They are not taking it seriously

ODI #11725679UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

I purchased a used 2021 Passport the end of May 2025. While driving, the 'collision mitigation braking system' or CMBS would activate the braking system and would intermittently just brake, causing panic for not only myself, but I'm sure drivers behind me for suddenly braking with no imminent threat in from of me. This happened multiple times without receiving any warning or notifications, just suddenly. It would happen without warning, or sometimes nearing a bridge or a cover plate on the road, which almost caused accidents multiple times to get rear ended. I have driven for decades and never felt anxiety until I drove this vehicle for a few months. I felt scared driving this vehicle, feeling uncertain when it would suddenly just brake. Eventually after a few months of driving, I got a reading that said CMBS problem on the screen. I scheduled an appointment with the dealer. The dealer suggested a near $3000 replacement for a camera (on a 2021 vehicle). At the appointment, I ultimately returned this vehicle to the dealer where I bought it and unfortunately lost out on thousands of dollars after having the vehicle about 6 months. I have always liked Honda, and have had 2 prior Hondas, but with this vehicle purchase, I felt the most unsafe I have ever felt in a vehicle, and moving forward will not feel comfortable purchasing Honda.

After having constant issues with the idle stop and the car alarm going off in the middle of the night and day for no apparent reason I took it to the dealer to get it fixed. After supposedly fixing the idle stop, about two weeks later I was going up a ramp during a heavy traffic hour and the car completely shot down. It took me a few minutes to get it back on. I’ve had issues with this car from day one (brand new). I’m currently trying to get another car.

During an oil change my magnetic drain plug was caked with magnetic gray material with specks of silver flake in it. This oil change has 6142 miles on it. I am concerned because my passport was built in Sept of 2020 right at the transition of the previously recalled j35 motors were produced. Car has been serviced at the Honda dealer since new except last 2 oil changes which were performed by me.

Auto idle malfunctioned. At a stop light the engine turned off and it took 5 minutes to restart the engine. No warning lights or messages appeared before it happened. Had the PGM-Fl Idle stop software update done 9/16/23 at 17,582 miles. Took to dealer they could not re create , the car has 46,359 miles now. This is 2nd vehicle this has happened to me , other vehicle same exact auto idle problem started at 60,000 and I drove it for 13,000 miles experiencing stalling out at lights and in stop and go traffic for over a year ( very dangerous and scary experience ) I took it to 2 different Honda dealers numerous times before they finally replaced starter assembly , starter relays and adjusted the valves per the March 2023 warranty extension notice .

One day the lights just started flashing. Took to dealer and was told that someone must have backed into me and would be about $2500 to replace the camera (which is behind the windshield). Occasionally it will function but clearly seems to be a malfunction. In research online there appear to be many others that have experienced the same issue - can’t just be a coincidence. Shouldn’t happen on a reliable four/five year old car

ODI #11713500POWER TRAIN

During a winter storm in approximately 10°F weather, my vehicle became immobilized due to a no-start condition. The starter initially engaged and cranked the engine several times, then failed and would only free-spin without turning the engine. After this occurred, the vehicle could not be shifted into neutral because it is equipped with an electronic shift-by-wire transmission. The only method to move the vehicle requires a proprietary Honda mechanical neutral-release tool (07AAA-TZ3A100). This tool was not supplied with the vehicle, was not available to the owner or responding tow operators, costs over $200, and local Honda dealerships do not carry it in stock. As a result, it was not possible to obtain the tool in an emergency situation. Two flatbed tow trucks responded. Both operators stated the only way to load the vehicle would be to drag it while locked in park, which would likely cause damage to the transmission, drivetrain, or tires. This was not a safe or acceptable option. As a result, occupants were stranded from approximately 1:00 PM until 6:30 PM in 10°F weather with no heat, because the vehicle could not be moved. A single common mechanical failure should not render a vehicle completely immobile with no accessible emergency override. Requiring a costly, proprietary tool that is not provided with the vehicle and not available to dealers or emergency responders creates a serious safety risk due to cold exposure and inability to move or clear the vehicle during emergency conditions.

During a normal drive we came to a stoplight, seconds after stopping, an emissions alert displayed along with transmission and VSA (I think). Upon seeing these codes I began to drive into a gas station and the vehicle barely moved with little power. We were able to park about 40 feet away and the vehicle would not move any further. This sounds similar to the existing recall but this model year is not included. I had to have the vehicle towed.

Vehicle has been having AIS issues for a couple of years, requiring new batteries, new starter/relays and countless internal computer updates (none of which have helped btw...). This morning she had the AIS engaged, went to turn left at a green light and when she released the brake the vehicle threw itself into Neutral and flashed a "Auto Idle Stop System Problem" message on the dash. She put it into park and tried to restart, which failed, she then had to turn the vehicle off completely and restart from there. As I mentioned, none of the computer updates Honda has done for this vehicle have helped and it's my understanding there is a block of vehicles in this age range (all Passports, Ridgelines and Pilots) that continue to have problems with the AIS as well. Honda needs to disable this "feature" on any vehicles they cannot fix via computer updates IMMEDIATELY before they get someone killed. Not to mention, we are sick and tired of having to replace the battery and/or starter every couple of years. Honda should not be putting tax breaks above their customers safety and satisfaction. You know it's bad when their 30+ year techs go out of their way to buy a used Honda just to avoid the AIS because they don't know what to do with it at this point either.

In addition, the vehicle vibrated abnormally and drove roughly. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the high-pressure fuel pump had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer suggested that the fuel injector and throttle body needed to be cleaned; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired due to the cost. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. No incident has occurred. However, my concern is that a recall was issued on February 1, 2024 (NHTSA Recall Number 24V-064), and as of October 31, 2025, Honda is still stating that parts are not available to complete the repair. I first contacted Honda in March 2025—over a year after the recall was issued—and was informed that the necessary parts were still unavailable. I called again in October 2025, and received the same response. We are now approaching two years since this recall was announced, and it is unacceptable and inexcusable that Honda has yet to provide the parts needed to correct this safety issue.

To preface: All of these issues only occur when the engine idle feature is on. I have not experienced any of these problems when the feature is off. Question #1: When I release the brake with the engine idle on, the vehicle will sometimes completely shut off. When this happens, the steering wheel and brakes lock up, and I am unable to restart the vehicle for at least 60 seconds. Question #2: On one occasion, my wife, our 8-month-old child, and I were stuck at a green light for about 60 seconds while unable to restart the vehicle. Cars were passing by at over 50 mph, and we were relying on other drivers to notice us in time. This situation has happened multiple times and poses a serious safety risk to both us and others on the road. Question #3: I have not taken the vehicle in for service because the issue is difficult to reproduce consistently. That uncertainty is part of the problem, along with the anxiety of not knowing whether the car will suddenly shut off. Question #4: For the same reason, I have not been able to demonstrate the problem on demand. However, the main concern is that I should not have to worry about my vehicle stalling when I go to accelerate. Question #5: The vehicle has completely shut off four separate times over the past year. On one occasion, after releasing the brake, the engine struggled to reach normal RPMs and the check engine light came on. I pulled over, turned the vehicle off, restarted it, and it seemed fine afterward, although it had noticeably less power while the check engine light was on. Lastly, there have been several instances where the engine did not completely shut off when the idle feature was on, but when I released the brake to accelerate, I heard a clicking sound and the vehicle seemed as though it was about to stall. It then resumed operation normally as the idle system re-engaged. Since this happens intermittently, it has been difficult to recreate during a diagnostic inspection.

My Passport has shut down 4 times recently while idling at a stop. There is a auto start/stop feature on the car that shuts down the engine at stops until the brake is released. The problem is that it sometimes does not restart after releasing the brake. The first 3 times it happened at an intersection so it was no big deal. The last time, today, it stalled on a highway as soon as I stopped for heavy traffic. The car was automatically put it neutral and it took me about 40-50 seconds to realize what happened and to restart while the lanes next to me started moving at highway speeds. I looked up the problem online and saw a "Honda Idle-Stop Class Action Suit ([XXX])" and found out that it is happening to others as well. Owned the 2021 Honda Passport for 4 years and have had multiple issues over that time. 1st. Electrical issues. Randomly while driving the center/head unit will continuously restart on a loop until vehicle is turned off and turned back on. 2nd. The speakers make crackling noises randomly while driving. Even when the audio/speakers are turned off the crackling continues. (Very loud and annoying) 3rd. The Passport sometimes shuts off completely when stopped at red lights and has difficultly turning back on / restarting. This showed an error that there was a battery issue, which the battery had just been replaced a month or two earlier. It said something about being in accessory mode. 4th. The sensor that tracks oncoming traffic goes off sporadically. There are times on single lane roads that the car forces the breaks on because it senses cars on the other side. 5th. There has been issues while accelerating that feel like the car is having trouble shifting. It continues to rev but not go, when letting off the gas it almost feels like its doing an engine break to get back down to a certain rpm or something. Had the whole car bouncing, had to pull over and turn off the car to get it to start working properly. *** All of that said, this car has been and continues to feel unsafe to drive for multiple reasons listed above. My passenger seat weight sensor was supposedly finally replaced on 4/9/2025 (I kept being turned away due to the part not being available), but it is still not working, as it is not illuminating/communicating with the dashboard appropriately. I told the dealer this the same day and they said it was late in the day so I had to bring it back. I went back to the shop twice and the second time they kept my car for 5 hours and said they couldn’t figure out why it’s not working so I would have to go back to the collision shop from 1/9/2024 to see if it is a wire or air bag issue. I got in my car and noticed that now the passer seat belt alarm is on so I took it back. They told me they can’t keep examining my car and I would have to pay for a full diagnostic test to see why the seat belt alarm and weight sensor is not working. I kept going back and forth with them that this is a safety issue and it needs to be fixed and I should not have to pay for this because at least the seat belt alarm was working before I went to them on 4/29/25. I also asked for a supervisor and was told no one was available and I would have to come back a 4th time. I left and instead of going back for who knows how long, I called the collision shop on 4/30/25 and have gone back and forth with them about finding out why my car is still not fixed. It is now 5/7/2025 and neither my passenger air bag sensor or seat belt sensor is working properly and the alarm is still beeping unless I lock the passenger seat belt. I do not trust the dealership and I am pissed off at the collision shop because no one seems to care that there are safety defects that are still not working correctly. I should also not have to pay for something that was out of my control and should have been done correctly the first time. I need some help now as this is an urgent matter and I do not feel safe or that my passenger will be safe in my vehicle.

I purchased this vehicle from a dealership 1 week ago. Prior to receiving the vehicle it had been serviced by the dealership and had passed inspection. The vehicle is a 2021 with low miles and appeared to be in very good condition with no appreciable rust, corrosion or wear. Since purchase, I have driven the vehicle about 160 miles on my daily commute. I did have issues with one of the automatic systems, but will submit that as a separate report as I do not believe it is related to this issue. Tonight I was driving home from work on a hilly, curved two-lane road and came upon a vehicle parked across the opposite lane and slightly into my lane. I was traveling at about 45 mph and pressed on the brakes suddenly but with reasonable force in order to slow to pass with caution. I immediately felt loss of brake pressure and did not stop as expected. I continued on at the same speed and passed very close to the rear of the stopped vehicle. Fortunately, I was able to swerve to avoid a collision. Once the brake pedal was pressed completely to the floor, the vehicle began to decelerate gradually as I continued down the hill. No warning lights or alerts came on at that point. At the bottom of the hill, I turned onto a flat quiet road to drive slowly and assess the situation. I determined that the brakes were compromised and that most pressure had been lost. I parked the vehicle and about 15 minutes later turned it off and back on and numerous warning systems came on saying that the brake fluid was low and other steering and traction control systems were compromised. I got out of the vehicle and brake fluid was pooled on the ground by the rear tire on the driver's side. When the roadside assistance person arrived we confirmed the leak by putting more brake fluid in, which gushed out onto the ground when the brakes were applied. The vehicle was transported by flatbed to a repair shop. There was no warning prior to this incident and no emergency system alert until well after.

I have encountered two types of brake issues: 1) my vehicle seems to flash BRAKE occasionally when oncoming vehicles pass by for no reason - they are not entering my lane or doing anything that should cause the message to flash. The vehicle type does not seem to matter - they have been old and new models, and have been both cars and trucks. My vehicle has only visually warned, but does not engage brakes, so no further safety issue is involved. It has done it frequently on some days and then none for awhile. We have tried to make note of vehicle type and model for consistency, but have not found any. 2) If my vehicle has its cruise control on (which is often) and a vehicle in front of me moves into a left-turn lane to turn - often with plenty of notice - my vehicle will engage it’s brakes and slow down even though there is no danger of hitting the other vehicle. So long as I take it out of cruise control, it will continue on driving. I suspect that if cruise control is not disengaged, it could fully brake and cause a bigger issue of an injury or accident.

Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No - I’m not sure how this would be done. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No

No warning messages on dashboard. The drivers side mirror goes off like there's something there but there's nothing. Same with the braking display light comes on when I'm no where near anything, yet I've had cars pull out in front of me thankful no crash has happened because it doesn't go off then. I plan to take it into the dealership soon. I can't give an estimate of how long exactly it's been doing this. Especially side mirror warning. That's been going on. The braking thing has probably been a month now

The sensors simply don’t work. CMBS system constantly raises warnings, often alarming me as a driver, almost creating accidents. On one occasion, coming into a turning lane of intersection with green arrow and cars moving forward into left turn, CMBS actually applied the brakes for about 1 second, alarming me and causing the driver behind me to react as well. There’s no permanent disabling of this feature, which is a mistake by mfg, and we often forget to turn off starting each drive. Blind spot is often throwing false alarms. Lane detection too, but we permanently turn off lane detection.

When driving my vehicle the emergency braking system alerts and initiates the brakes at inappropriate time. While driving on a straight road with a curve ahead if there is a car coming the opposite direction around the curve the braking system will engage. I am not at the point to go into the curve yet so my steering wheel is still straight. If I have starting to turn it will not engage. This happens daily as it is a road I take to work. This has been happening since I purchased the vehicle in January 2023

Our 2021 Honda passport EX-L sometimes hits the brakes on its own. It happens every now and then, like when I'm exiting a freeway, or sometimes even when going with the flow of traffic. I've seen this issue talked about in the [XXX] , but today I saw an official article citing NHTSA concerns, so I'm writing to say that I too have experienced this potential dangerous issue while on road. My vehicle randomly brake checks on its own when it falsely detects the situation in front of me, which could result in a rear end collision. I'd like to see this issue resolved, so please feel free to contact me if you need any more information. Even back in 2022, I was experiencing this issue. This has happened occasionally. The last time was about a few weeks ago on the freeway. Please see the forum screenshot for my reference-- I'm [XXX] in that thread. I purchased my vehicle in August 2023 (used). Phone calls (both through using CarPlay and with the phone unplugged and with genuine cables) sound terrible on the part of the recipient. We replaced the FAKRA cables and harness late last year and just replaced the microphone (and I got charged a diagnosis fee). The issue is continuing. It's gotten so bad that I have to use my AirPods to make any calls for my recipient to hear anything I'm saying (which is illegal in my state and should not be a requirement in a car that is less than 3 years old). I've dug in to forums and this is a common issue for the EX-L trim level in the 2021 model. Additionally, this can impact the backup camera and other lane keeping assist issues. I have factory reset it multiple times and it's still having similar issues.

When the passport is in cruise control I have been driving up a very steep mountain and have had the car slam on brakes with no indication to the cars behind me or me intially causing everyone to come to a halt going up a mountain with a 9% incline. I realize you can adjust the distance but it still gives no warning and it is not as if you are tailo the car in front. I turn in my subdivision daily and if I let off the gas which I have to I the neighborhood and not have to break at five or ten mph something underneath feels as if it is catching like a bike break too close it scrubs. The final thing. I have started the car remotely many times. I have done it twice in parking lots and it has jumped forward . Had someone been in from of the car standing it jumped hard enough to hit someone. Or it the car facing mine had been closer it would have hit that car as well. Thank you

Forward Collision Warning (FCW): At random intervals, the FCW will give a false positive warning of an imminent collision with a car approaching from the opposite direction. This has occurred at various times over the past 2+ years. Comments to this effect to the Honda service representatives have indicated that this anomaly has been reported previously. They have not provided a fix or software update to correct this issue. The event is a safety issue because of the distraction from focusing on the road ahead. Although the automatic braking system has not been employed, the driver may in response to the false warning apply the brakes and cause an accident inadvertently.

Regarding NHTSA Recall Number 23V-174 Honda Campaign Number: FE5 Service Bulletin Number: 23-035 On May 1st, 2023, we dropped off our vehicle for service at Rick Roush Honda in Medina, Ohio for the recall noted above. Both side mirrors were replaced per the recall. Upon getting the vehicle back from the service department, we noticed that the driver's side (left) mirror had waves in it that made it look like a 'fun house mirror'. The dealership didn't have an additional mirror on hand, so we drove with this replacement mirror for a week until an additional replacement came in. The second replacement was just as bad as the first. Upon pulling off this mirror, the service department grabbed the first replacement as well as the original mirror and compared all three. The waviness didn't appear in any of the mirrors when they weren't installed, however, upon attaching either of the replacement mirrors to the mirror assembly the waviness returned. The service department then decided to install the original mirror back on the vehicle until they could find out what was wrong with the replacements. It's now been 85 days, and the service manager, [XXX] , hasn't heard back from his contacts at Honda in California. He stated they have had 7 to 8 others with the same complaint and are waiting on resolution for them as well. On October 29, 2022, the CMBS emergency braking system slammed the brakes on for no obvious reason. This happened at least four or five times while traveling eastbound on I-40 in AZ. There were no cars in front of or changing into my lane. After it happened a few times, I called the dealer RSM Honda in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, where i service the car to see if i could turn it off. They suggested reducing the sensitivity, which I did. After changing the sensitivity, I still experienced two or three more incidents of surprise emergency braking for no reason. After the fifth or sixth incident, I pulled over and searched a pdf copy of my owners manual and found a way to turn off the CMBS with a button on the dash. This worked to stop the braking incidents, but I had to do it over again every time I restarted the engine after stopping for gas, etc. This scared me and was dangerous as this would happen while i was going 70 mph. I think every instance occurred while I was passing a "big rig", but I was never in the same lane as the truck. Sometimes it was on a very gentle curve, but other times we (truck and I) were both going straight down a straightaway. I had done similar trips previously in February, June, and July without having this issue, but had it happen multiple times on my October trip as described above.

I am writing to make you aware of an alarming incident that happened with our 2021 Honda Passport this fall. It said that the antitheft system had lost power and that the power button needed to be pushed to restore it. She finally got the car to start by pushing the “volume” button, NOT the power (engine on/off) button. The message disappeared. If this would have happened while actually on the road, there could have been serious consequences. Can you image your vehicle suddenly shutting off on a highway? About a two months later, I also received the same message when driving through my subdivision, but the engine did not shut off. I immediately took the vehicle a local Honda dealer who tested the battery (the original battery – just about to turn two years old) and found that it needed to be replaced. There was no indication that it was going bad prior to these incidents. As I stated earlier, it is the first scenario that is a red flag. Why did the engine shut off? Have other Passport or Honda owners had a similar experience? I thought you should know what happened to us.

The first incident occurred on a busy through street and a small car about 1/2 block in front of me did a tight U turn and proceed along the medium on the other side of the street and I was also next to the concrete medium on my side of the street. My car went into full slamming on my brakes, with no warning light o and I had no control of the car. Last year my wife and I purchased a 2021 Honda Passport. For the past year we have complained to Honda that the sensor for the Brake Assist was not working properly when the vehicle is in a curve. The sensor could not distinguish the vehicle's lane of travel and would sense oncoming traffic in the other lane as though it was in my lane, and would flash "Brake" with a high pitch alarm. Up until last month, this was only an annoying issue. We complained to the dealership, who said they know about the issue, but Honda does not have a fix. We were under the impression the problem was only a passive issue. Given the lack of vehicle inventories, we decided to keep the vehicle. Two weeks ago, the sensor caused the vehicle to abruptly brake, causing an extreme change of speed from 65 mph to 45-50 mph. My wife struggled to keep the vehicle in the lane of travel. We spoke to the Honda dealership, who advise this active response is also a known issue, especially at night, and there is nothing they can do about it. We asked about a recall notice or fix. The dealership said there is nothing from Honda Corporate. The dealership service department commented that the sensor has issues distinguishing the vehicle's lane of travel, especially at night, and can cause the active braking. Our frustration is with the obvious severe safety issue. My wife and son almost struck another vehicle on the freeway because of this. Had we known about this safety issue, we never would have purchased the vehicle. They contacted Honda tech support and they stated it is a known design defect. They will not address it in anyway even though there are many possibilities to address this. Noise is energy and energy has to dissipate. I am concerned the grinding noise will start to wear something out and cause a failure later in the life of the transmission or the cooler.

ODI #11453643EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

Vehicle has LED headlights. In snowy conditions at night, buildup on headlights caused extremely reduced visibility. Required frequent pulling over, getting out of vehicle, and clearing headlights. Not a safe situation in the snow. Never had problems with halogen or HID lighting so I suspect it’s a heat issue due to LED lights operating much cooler. Also, snow buildup on grille emblem that houses radar for accident avoidance causes system failure which results in instrument display of failure. The warning box completely covers the speedometer so you have no idea of your speed. Also not good in snowy conditions. This can be turned off, but not while moving, and defeats the purpose of the avoidance system.

The contact owns a 2021 Honda Passport. The contact stated while driving at a slow speed, the brake pedal would intermittently fail to operate as needed without warning. The contact stated that he had to repeatedly pump the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. The dealer was notified of the failure and an appointment was made to inspect the braking system. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 400. Incident happened twice. Vehicle failed to stop when brakes were applied, brakes were applied several times before it stopped without a collision. Second incident happened while consumer shifted the gear in reverse in the parking lot brakes applied would not work. Consumer hit the bollard in front of the parking lot. Speed was approximately 5-10mph. Odometer reading was about 1600. No further occurrences after windshield replacement.

Multiple times when my car is in drive I will receive a message on the dashboard saying "Transimission Problem. See Manual" When this happen the car automatically shifts into Neutral and will not shift back into any gear other than Park unless I completely restart the car. Many other people have also had this problem, can be seen here https://www.passportforums.com/threads/major-transmission-failure.2984/ I believe there is a major issue with the transmission on some Honda Passports that is potentially fatal. I took the car in once to get it looked at and they could not find anything wrong with the car, it has happened since I took the car in to repair.

The vehicle's horn no longer functions properly. The vehicle's windows failed to open and close and the vehicle turned completely off in the middle of the highway losing all power. The contact stated the failure caused an oncoming vehicle to end up rear-ending them. There were no injuries and no medical attention was needed. The vehicle was towed. A police report was filed. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who was informed by the manufacturer that they were not to proceed forward with any diagnosing or repairs for the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case regarding the matter. The failure mileage was 3,627.

Car shifted into neutral on its own while accelerating up a freeway on ramp with a transmission error warning light on dash and could not get the vehicle to go back into gear until ignition was cycled a couple times. Obvious safety risk as any vehicle movement was impossible, and was not able to completely coast out of the traffic lane. There was no known symptom prior to this event and the vehicle is currently at the dealership for repair/warranty evaluation though they state "it is not showing any error codes on the diagnostics plug in", they did state that on test drive it "behaved perfectly until coming back to the dealership and acted up again....again showing a dash warning but no diagnostic code."

When I bought vehicle it came rated with 5000lbs towing. To achieve that towing rating I had to buy and get installed the Honda Transmission Cooler. I got the kit installed and right after install there is a noise when the vehicle shifts from 7-8 gear. It sounds like rumble strips. I did some research and there are others who have the same issue. See link to Honda passport forum. https://www.passportforums.com/threads/noise-when-shifting-from-7th-to-8th-gear.2923/ Took vehicle to dealership and they looked it over. They checked fluid level and spoke to Honda tech support. The dealership told me that Honda knows about this and if they fix it they will let me know. To me this means that this is a known engineering defect and they didn’t say if they have a fix or not. The reason I bought the vehicle was because of the towing capacity. To get the towing capacity I had to install the trans cooler. I paid and had it installed and now the vehicle does not run like it did when I bought it. As for safety risks there could be unforeseen issues. Because the transmission is now making a noise of unknown origins it could get damaged and cause a loss of power/malfunction. The noise (through fluid dynamics) could also cause damage to the cooler causing the transmission fluid to leak out and cause the vehicle to lose power.

ODI #11413746LANE DEPARTURE

HELLO I'VE HAD MY 2021 PASSPORT AWD FOR ONLY A WEEK AND HAVE NOTICED IT PULLS NOTICEABLY TO THE RIGHT. THIS EVEN HAPPENS WHEN " THE LANE KEEP ASSIST" IS SWITCHED OFF. IT IS A CONSTANT STRUGGLE TO KEEP IT FROM DRIFTING INTO THE RIGHT LANE AND OTHER CARS. THIS HAPPENS ON ALL TYPES OF ROADS BUT IS MOST NOTICEABLE OF HIGHWAYS. THE PULL IS SO STRONG THAT IT MAKES THE LANE KEEP ASSIST SYSTEM (LKAS) UNUSABLE. WHEN USING LKAS ON CRUISE CONTROL THE VEHICLE KEEPS DRIFTING INTO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD AND EVEN CROSSES THE LINE. I WENT TO THE NHTSA.GOV WEBSITE AND FOUND THAT HONDA IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE ON THE 2019 PASSPORT (OFF-CENTER STEERING /PULLING) AND HAS SENT COMMUNICATIONS ABOUT IT'S INVESTIGATION TO IT'S DEALERSHIPS. THE ALIGNMENT BEING OFF ON A FACTORY CAR THAT IS BUILT FOR OFF-ROADING IS HIGHLY IRREGULAR. FOR COMPARISON, MY HONDA HR-V WHICH I HAD FOR 3'YEARS HAS NEVER HAD ANY ALIGNMENT ISSUES..

PURCHASED THIS AUTOMOBILE THAT HAVE A VIBRATION WHILE RIDING IN EVERY TYPE OF ROADS THAT I NOTED AFTER RIDING BACK HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP. AT THE MOMENT OF THE INITIAL TEST DRIVE THIS CONDITION WASN'T NOTED SINCE WE TEST DRIVE A PASSPORT EX-L TRIM MODEL. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP (APPOINTMENT ON RECORD) AND INFORMED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF THE ISSUES. I WAITED AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR 2.5 HRS AND THEY INFORMED THAT THEY VERIFIED THE ALIGNMENT AND WHEEL BALANCES AND NOTHING WAS FOUND. I RETURNED HOME AND CALLED BACK THE DEALER AND INFORMED THAT VIBRATION CONDITION STILL OCCURRING. THEY SUGGESTED TO CHANGE THE 4 TIRES AND WHEELS SINCE MAYBE A FROM FACTORY ISSUE. I ASKED THE DEALER TO PERFORM A TEST RIDE ON A NEW SIMILAR UNIT. WE DID IT, DROVE THE NEW UNIT AND NO VIBRATIONS FOUND, SO THAT IS NOT A NORMAL OPERATING CONDITION. DEALER TEST DRIVE MY AUTOMOBILE AND NOTED THAT THE VIBRATION STILL THERE ON THE DRIVER'S SEAT AND STEERING WHEEL. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN AND LEFT THE CAR FOR CORRECTING THE VIBRATION ISSUE. THEY STILL WORKING ON THE SAME SERVICE ORDER AND DIDN'T CLOSED THE PREVIOUS ONE. TODAY, THEY CHANGED THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE (DOESN'T LOOKS NEW) AND THEY MENTIONED THAT THEY REDO THE WHEEL BALANCES. AFTER A SECOND REPAIR ATTEMPT, WHILE DRIVING BACK HOME I NOTED THAT THE VIBRATION STILLS. DURING THE RIDE BACK HOME I NOTED THAT WHILE BREAKING, THE AUTOMOBILE WAS VIBRATING ALSO NOW. NEW ISSUE. MY AUTOMOBILE WAS LEFT AT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT FOR A COMPLETE VERIFICATION WITH THEIR TECHNICIANS. I ASKED THEM BEFORE DELIVERING THE AUTOMOBILE TO ME TO PERFORM A FINAL TEST DRIVE INSPECTION WITH THE SHOP FOREMAN AFTER CORRECTING THE ISSUE. AS A NOTE, VIBRATION CONDITION HAPPENS IN NEWLY ASPHALTED ROADS, OLD ASPHALTED ROADS, HIGHWAYS, FL TURNPIKE, EVERYWHERE. I FEEL UNSAFE WITH THESE VIBRATION CONDITIONS.

THE VEHICLE IS SUPPOSED TO AUTOMATICALLY GO INTO PARK IF THE DRIVER STOPS THE VEHICLE AND EXITS THE VEHICLE WITHOUT TAKING IT OUT OF DRIVE, REVERSE, OR NEUTRAL. IT'S DESIGNED TO DO THAT ON THE PUSH BUTTON TRANSMISSIONS USED IN THIS VEHICLE. THE SENSOR THAT DOES THIS IS ACTIVATED BY UNBUCKLING THE SEAT BELT. IF SOMEONE IS USING A SEAT BELT EXTENDER AND UNBUCKLES THE SEAT BELT FROM THE EXTENDER AND LEAVES THE EXTENDER PLUGGED IN THIS SYSTEM IS DEFEATED. THE VEHICLE CAN MOVE FORWARD OR BACKWARDS CREATING A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE USE THESE EXTENDERS DUE TO WEIGHT ISSUES, WEARING BULKY CLOTHING, AND VARIOUS OTHER REASONS. THE SENSOR SHOULDN'T BE IN THE SEATBELT, IT SHOULD BE IN A PRESSURE SWITCH IN THE SEAT MEASURING THE ABSENCE OF WEIGHT ON THE SEAT. THE SAME TYPE OF SENSOR THAT ACTIVATES THE AIRBAGS.
