The engine fails to restart automatically after shutting off at a complete stop (such as a red light or intersection
sometime when the engine auto stops it doesn't start again
The Auto Idle feature has caused my car to stall multiple times. This is extremely dangerous because it always happens when I am in populated areas- sometimes at red lights and another time in stop/go highway traffic. My car is 1.5 years old and this keeps happening more and more frequently. I am very concerned that one of these times I am going to be rear ended because traffic starts to go, I let off the brake to drive and then my car stalls. I then have to turn my vehicle off completely and then back on to get it to not have issues. I do get a warning saying to depress the break and press the start button. Sometimes I get a red battery light on the dash.
The vehicle's Auto Idle Stop (AIS) system engaged normally when coming to a complete stop at an intersection, shutting off the engine to save fuel. However, when attempting go through the intersection after the light changed to green, the engine failed to restart automatically. The vehicle completely lost power in an active lane of traffic, creating a safety hazard. The vehicle had to be shifted into park and manually restarted to clear the roadway. This failure appears directly related to NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA25004 regarding Honda/Acura Auto Idle Stop restart failures.
The vehicle is experiencing an intermittent but highly dangerous defect involving the factory-installed Auto Idle Stop system. When the vehicle comes to a complete stop at intersections, traffic lights, or in stop-and-go traffic, the Auto Idle Stop system engages as designed and shuts off the engine. However, upon releasing the brake pedal to accelerate, the engine fails to restart automatically. Instead of seamlessly restarting, the vehicle completely stalls in live traffic. The dashboard instruments remain on, but the engine drops completely out of operational mode. To recover propulsion, the driver must shift the vehicle entirely into Park, press the start/stop button to cycle the ignition completely off, and then manually restart the engine. This creates an immediate and severe safety hazard. The sudden, unprompted loss of propulsion leaves the vehicle completely stranded in active intersections and roadway lanes, exposing the occupants to an imminent risk of a rear-end collision. The restart delay forces the driver to perform multiple steps to reset the vehicle while traffic builds around them. The manufacturer is aware of similar systemic restart failures across its V6 engine platforms, which are currently the subject of active NHTSA investigations and class-action litigation. However, this issue continues to persist on the newest model years, creating an active road safety risk.
The Auto Idle Stop (AIS) on our 2025 Honda Odyssey will cause the van to stall and the engine will not restart. When this happens, our only option is to put the van in park, shut it down and then restart. Sometimes that van has not restarted for almost 90 seconds. We have had it into the Honda dealership three separate times for this issue. The first time they told us the battery was drained so they recharged for over eight hours. The last time they said "the battery fails the load test at this time" so they replaced the battery and stated that the vehicle was "operating as designed at this time." Since the last time we had it in for service (and with a brand new battery), the AIS has failed on us twice. The last time (XXX) it nearly caused an accident on a busy road in Northern Virginia. When it fails to restart the van goes into a default type mode (where most of the service lights turn on or flash and we will have to put the hazard lights on, put the van in park, shut it off and then restart the van. This issue has happened to us about 12 times int he last 8 months. I am very concerned that this will cause an accident at some point and is putting my family's safety at risk. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
We have been experiencing issues with the car stalling while driving. Most recently, the car lost power a few feet into making an unprotected left turn leaving us stranded in the middle of an intersection in a vulnerable position for several minutes. This was deeply unsettling to have happen while making left turn maneuver. It seems to be a failure of the Auto Start/Stop function. After a few persistent trips to the dealer, they have now informed us that this is a known issue, but the parts are on backorder until January 2027. The workaround is turning off the Auto Start/Stop function, but this button does not have an indicator light, is not always confirmed on-screen, and is re-enabled by default EVERY time the car is started. It also appears that others have complained about this issue, and this deserves to be upgraded to a recall. It is unacceptable that a manufacturer would know about an issue with serious safety implications and not notice owners. This could have easily caused a crash and it is happening to others. This specific van is used to transport a disabled family member and outside aides often drive him in this car. We do not feel comfortable with a non-persistent workaround while others are driving this car while we wait for this part. - Auto Start/Stop and Drivetrain, available for inspection - Car stalls during maneuvers after stopping - Problem was reproduced multiple times. Dealer is aware. - Inspected by dealer. - No warnings, messages, or symptoms.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey has repeatedly failed to restart after the Auto-Idle Stop feature automatically shut off the engine while idling in traffic. This is a serious safety hazard that could leave the vehicle disabled in a busy intersection, exposing occupants and nearby motorists to the risk of a potentially catastrophic collision. Despite two starter replacements in October 2025 and October 2026, the problem has occurred multiple times. The authorized Honda dealership acknowledged this is a known issue but stated that no permanent solution is available. No warning messages were observed before the failures. A vehicle that can unexpectedly become inoperable in traffic presents an unacceptable safety risk and warrants urgent investigation and corrective action. Please associate the above statement with EA25-004.
When I come to a stop and the auto idle feature is enabled, my car sometimes fails to turn back on, and I am stuck, trying to get my car turned back on. It usually involves me completely turning off my car, opening the car door and then turning the car back on
Auto Idle start stop system failed to start vehicle while. We were stopped at a red light auto idle shut down the engine once the light turn green and we attempted to move forward the auto start failed to cycle resulting in a stalled vehicle on the road, potentially increasing risk to passengers and other drivers on the road. This has happened multiple times.
Engine and vehicle completely turns off when auto start/stop engages when at complete stops.
When idle start activates at a stoplight sometimes the car will not start when you take your foot off the brake. Car then takes several tries but it will start again. This is a dangerous situation and can lead to accidents. Only seems to happen randomly after the car warms up. Dealer did replace the battery but it did not fix the problem. My guess is the starter does not perform correctly after heat soak in the engine bay.
I've had multiple instances where I would be stopped at a red light, when when the light turned green, the car would not accelerate. I would have to turn the engine completely off and back on. This is a safety issue as I'm sitting in traffic and cars/vehicles behind me are expecting me to go. My fear is that someone not be watching my van but the light and accelerate before I am able to move forward. My son, a mechanic, looked at the vehicle. His suggestion was to replace the battery - the vehicle was purchased March 2025, and should be too soon to have to replace the battery. However, when attempting to start it, it sounded like the battery was dying. A couple of weeks after replacing the battery, there had been no issues. I had been driving the vehicle around 20 minutes, most of that at highway speed (80MPH on the toll road). I was idling at a red light. When the light turned green, the vehicle would not come out of the idle mode. I could NOT switch from drive to park. I could NOT turn off the engine. I sat in the road for a minute and a half to 2 minutes (as I sat through an entire light cycle) before the van would finally allow me to turn off the engine and turn it back on. There was no warning, messages or other issues prior to this happening.
I am providing formal notice of a recurring defect involving my leased 2025 Honda Odyssey Sport-L and requesting prompt investigation and resolution under Honda's warranty and applicable Maryland law, including the Maryland Lemon Law. I leased the vehicle on XXX, with approximately 18 miles. It currently has 17,370 miles and has been maintained at authorized Honda dealerships. The vehicle has repeatedly failed to move from a stopped position. On XXX, Heritage Honda of Westminster documented the issue (Repair Order XXX), recording a flashing "D," inability to shift, a transmission-system warning, and Diagnostic Trouble Code P07E4. The code was cleared, but no repair was made because the problem could not be duplicated. On XXX, the defect occurred again while I was stopped at a busy intersection with my five children in the vehicle. When traffic began moving, the vehicle would not move, the dashboard went black, and the vehicle required multiple restart attempts before operating again, creating a serious safety concern. Because this defect has recurred after a documented service visit and remains unresolved, I request that Honda open a case, perform a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation and repair, provide copies of all diagnostic findings and repair records, advise me regarding a loaner vehicle, and confirm the warranty and any applicable Maryland Lemon Law remedies. Please preserve all records related to this matter. I reserve all rights available under applicable state and federal law. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The vehicle idle start/stop feature has started struggling to reengage, particularly, it seems, in warmer weather. At least six times in the past two months (Sept-Oct 2026), the start fails completely during a drive. What this means is that the vehicle is stopped at a light and the start/stop kicks in. When I lift my foot off the brake to prepare to drive again, a warning flashes on (it disappears quickly but says something was detected) and the car shifts into park. I cannot put the vehicle into drive without turning off the car and turning it back on. This is very dangerous as I have been at the front of and in long lanes of traffic. Other drivers honk and try to go around me while I am getting the vehicle back up and running. The dealer has checked the car twice but cannot replicate the issue (both days they had the car, the temperature outside was below 80 degrees, and that seems to be a factor). Therefore, they cannot make or recommend any fixes other than turning off the feature everytime I turn on the vehicle.
When starting the car it takes a long time to officially start. This could leave me stranded. A Honda dealer has confirmed this is an ongoing issue as well as other car shops. It started to appear a few weeks ago. I have video I can send. The auto start stop system has shut the vehicle off in the middle of an intersection which could cause an accident or me being stranded.
The auto start-stop system fails frequently. If I do not turn off the system, when I stop on red light, the engine turns off as expected. However, it frequently fails to start. The car stalls and it's difficult to turn back on. I need to turn the car off completely first, then try to turn it back on. This usually takes 10-20 seconds. The situation presents a safely hazard as I'm not able to continue to drive through an intersection on a green light. I took the car to dealer 3 times. They were not able to reproduce he issue nor find the cause of the problem
Unknown. **Vehicle:** 2025 Honda Odyssey Touring **Component:** Engine / Electrical System / Automatic Idle Stop My 2025 Honda Odyssey Touring has repeatedly failed to restart after the automatic idle-stop system shuts off the engine while stopped in traffic. This problem began very early in the vehicle's life, at approximately 10,000 miles, and has occurred an estimated 8–10 times. The vehicle currently has 40,340 miles. When the problem occurs, the engine does not crank or make any clicking sounds. Multiple attempts are required before the engine will restart. On at least one occasion, the dashboard displayed the message "Press Brake and Push Start." I cannot confirm whether this message appeared during the other incidents because I was focused on getting the vehicle restarted and moving out of traffic. The problem has occurred exclusively following activation of the automatic idle-stop system. The vehicle starts normally when initially started after being parked. This presents a serious safety concern because the vehicle becomes unexpectedly immobilized at traffic lights or intersections, potentially exposing occupants to rear-end collisions or other traffic hazards. Honda issued a dealer communication dated May 21, 2025 (NHTSA document MC-11019246-0001), specifically concerning 2023–2025 Honda Odysseys failing to restart following automatic idle-stop operation. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this recurring safety defect.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey Touring has developed an intermittent malfunction involving the second-row passenger-side seatbelt buckle and warning system. The problem began at approximately 39,000 miles. The vehicle currently has 40,340 miles. The seatbelt warning system intermittently activates and produces repeated audible chimes even though the passenger's seatbelt is buckled. The warning can be triggered or interrupted by physically moving or wiggling the seatbelt buckle or latch assembly. This suggests an intermittent malfunction within the buckle assembly or its associated electrical components. I am concerned that the buckle assembly may be defective. Although the warning system is detecting a change in buckle status, I cannot determine whether the problem is limited to the electrical sensor or also affects the mechanical integrity of the buckle. This presents a potential occupant safety concern and causes repeated driver distraction due to false seatbelt warnings. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this possible seatbelt buckle defect.
Vehicle was at a stop light and engine turned off via the automatic idle engine stop. However, when I tried to press the gas the vehicle put itself in park and flashed a battery warning. I had to restart the car 4 times before it would turn back on and drive.
I've now had multiple issues with the car shutting off during auto-idle - pull up to a traffic light and it automatically enters auto-idle. When you let off the brake, the van shuts off. Brought it to the dealer and it happened to them immediately - and the starter was replaced. I thought we were fixed, but it continues to happen (n=4) and Honda says "nothing to do, they've already replaced the starter" since they cant recreate it the day they tried. It most recently happened with my family in the car getting off the interstate and cars behind honking and approaching since we couldnt move the car quickly enough. There is no advanced warning, it just dies and the dash reboots - then indicates that you are not in park (as it tries to restart).
There appears to be an issue with the automatic start-stop system. Occasionally, the engine will shut off at a stop light but fail to restart as expected. To get the vehicle running again, I have to turn the car off completely, wait a few seconds, and then start it back up.
Start/stop function failed. After stopping at a red light the start/stop function turned off the engine. After lifting off the brake, the engine died when attempting restart. This required turning the vehicle completely off and back on to continue driving.
The stop-start system that is supposed to idle at lights and when stopped causes the system to completely shut off. This is incredibly dangerous as I have to completely shut the car off and back on. It also eats at the battery so sometimes I have to 'start' multiple times before the engine turns over and actually starts.
At a stop light, car threw a large BRAKE warning and stalled when the foot was taken off the brake. The car then had to put in park and turned off and on again. Having a car die in the middle of traffic, even when at a stop light, is not safe. We took the car to the dealership, where they informed us the starter needed replacement. Prior to this the car has been jerky when coming out of that idle stop feature, but hasn't stalled. The BRAKE warning did flash on the screen earlier that day but the car didn't stall.
The idle stop failed to restart the vehicle on multiple occasions and killed the car in the middle of busy intersections. There is a known issue with the idle stop on late model Hondas and Zimbrick Honda said my VIN isn’t affected yet so I have to pay to have the known issue diagnosed. The problem is hard to duplicate but causes severe safety issues. I have an extended service contract and Honda is allowing unsafe vehicles to continue to operate with a known defect.
My vehicle completely shut off while stopped at a stop light. I have to completely turn off and restart the car. This is super dangerous!
The auto stop start system semi regularly stalls in the middle of traffic, shutting the van down. This requires a quick power off and restart that doesn't always succeed on the first attempt. This creates a risk of an accident, especially during busy traffic times. The dealer just told us that if it will start up eventually then the starter isn't bad, so there's nothing they can do. This is a known issue amongst Odyssey owners. The vehicle has only been inspected by the dealership. They don't acknowledge the problem, which is why I'm reporting it here. This is a common issue and nobody is doing anything about it. No warning signs. This has been occurring for several months, intermittently.
Start/stop function failed. After stopping at a red light the start/stop function turned off the engine. After lifting off the brake, the engine died when attempting restart. This required turning the vehicle completely off and back on to continue driving.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey has experienced repeated intermittent failures of the Auto Idle Stop system. When the vehicle stopped and the engine shut off as part of the Auto Idle Stop function, the engine sometimes failed to restart automatically as expected. The problem began after approximately the first eight months of ownership and occurred multiple times before the vehicle reached 36,000 miles. I reported the issue to the Honda dealership while the vehicle was still within the original 36,000-mile basic warranty mileage limit. The dealer asked me to leave the vehicle for two to three days for diagnosis, but because the problem was intermittent, I decided to monitor it and see whether it happened again. I reported the same issue to the dealer again at approximately 37,000 miles. I was then told that I would be charged for diagnosis and repair. This failure concerns me because the engine may not restart when needed at a traffic light or other stop, potentially leaving the vehicle unable to move when traffic resumes. I do not know the underlying mechanical or electrical cause, and the problem has not yet been diagnosed or repaired. I request that this recurring Auto Idle Stop no-restart problem be investigated. Please review whether it is related to any known Honda technical issue affecting Odyssey vehicles. The issue occurred repeatedly before 36,000 miles and was reported to the dealer before that mileage was reached. I would like this safety concern documented and investigated.
The auto stop/restart failed regularly at intersections. Being stopped at intersections and having to try to restart the vehicle was not safe for us or others at the intersection. The problem was not confirmed by the dealer, but the dealer did say they've seen similar issues with similar models. There were no error messages or warning lights. The dealer has tried resolving this by charging the battery.
My car has shutoff due to an orange system error of the idle auto stop/start system. This appears connected to EA25004. When at a traffic light, after the engine shuts off, my car occasionally fails to restart or is slow to restart when reapplying the gas. If the error occurrs, it requires me to shut off the car, restart the car, and shift into drive before I can move. This is dangerous for following vehicles in close traffic. The dealership was unable to replicate the issue and did not provide replacement parts.
Vehicle auto start/stop was turned on. Vehicle stopped at a red light, vehicle engine shut off. Upon releasing the brake pedal, vehicle engine failed to start, a series of warnings and messages flashed on the dashboard, then vehicle transmission slammed into Park, from Drive. Driver proceeded to turn the vehicle off entirely, and was able to successfully restart the vehicle and drive away. Dashcam video, which captured audio and video through windshield but not dashboard, available upon request (file size too large to submit via this form).
The vehicle's Auto Idle Stop system shuts off the engine when stopped at a red light, and the engine intermittently fails to restart when the brake pedal is released. This has happened sporadically, including twice on October 11, 2026. Each time, the vehicle was left immobilized in an active traffic lane and would not move; I had to fully turn the vehicle off and restart it to drive again. This matches the defect under NHTSA engineering analysis EA25-004.
Since XXX the engine fails to restart after Auto Idle Stop engages at a red light or stop. Vehicle shuts off. At least 10 times, ongoing. Relates to NHTSA EA25004. Honda case XXX open; Millennium Honda returned it Sept 22 without repair. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The Auto Idle Stop feature malfunctions when coming to a full stop with the brake pedal depressed. The car stopped and then the engine shut down. It was difficult to restart the engine. The concern is that I cannot move the vehicle until I am able to restart the engine which puts me in an unsafe situation, especially at intersections or in traffic. The message on the dash said to depress the brake and depress the start on/off button, which I did several times before the engine actually restarted.
I would like to report two incidents involving my 2025 Honda Odyssey Touring that may be relevant to NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA25004, which is investigating failures of the Auto Idle Stop system to restart the engine. The investigation includes 2018-2025 Honda Odyssey vehicles and concerns allegations that the engine fails to restart after an Auto Idle Stop event. On September 27, 2026, and again on October 12, 2026, my vehicle failed to restart after the Auto Idle Stop system shut off the engine while I was stopped at a red traffic light. When I attempted to proceed by releasing the brake and pressing the accelerator, the engine did not restart as expected. In both incidents, the vehicle automatically shifted into Park and displayed a message instructing me to restart the engine manually. This left me unable to proceed in an active traffic lane and created a potential safety hazard due to surrounding traffic. Both events occurred unexpectedly and without prior warning. The condition is consistent with reports of Auto Idle Stop no-restart failures that are the subject of EA25004. I respectfully request that this information be included in the ongoing investigation. Vehicle: 2025 Honda Odyssey Touring Incident Dates: September 27, 2026 and October 12, 2026 Failure Mode: Engine failed to restart following Auto Idle Stop activation; vehicle shifted to Park and required manual restart. Safety Impact: Vehicle became immobilized in an active traffic lane.
The Honda Odyssey’s Auto Idle Stop/Restart system has repeatedly malfunctioned. When the vehicle comes to a stop and the automatic idle-stop feature engages, the engine fails to restart as intended. This has occurred on multiple occasions, indicating a recurring problem rather than an isolated incident. The exact defective component has not been determined. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. This malfunction creates a serious safety hazard because the vehicle unexpectedly becomes immobilized in active traffic. When the engine fails to restart, I cannot immediately accelerate or move the vehicle as expected. This creates a risk of rear-end collisions, particularly at busy intersections, stoplights, and other situations where surrounding drivers reasonably expect traffic to move. The unpredictable nature of the failure makes it especially concerning because there is no way to anticipate when the vehicle will fail to restart. The fact that this has happened repeatedly increases my concern for the safety of my passengers, other motorists, and myself. No engine lights when this has occurred. I have to manually restart and it usually lags and cars behind me get mad and then try to zip around me. This makes me feel extremely unsafe- especially since buying this vehicle brand new.
The auto idle stop is causing the van to not start up after stopping at red light or stop sign and it causes the van to completely go dead in middle of the road. You have to turn the van completely off, while people behind you are honking their horns at you, and then crank the van back up in order to get it to go again. All dash lights are on but the engine dies and will not start without having to shut the van off. This is very dangerous and frustrating for any vehicle to do this, but especially a 2025!!!! This happened today 10/12/2026 but has happened several times already with my family.
Vehicle is equipped with automatic engine idle-stop (auto stop/start). On multiple occasions, when the system shuts the engine off at a stoplight or in stopped traffic, the engine fails to restart automatically when the brake pedal is released. The vehicle is left immobilized in an active traffic lane. Restarting requires shifting to park and pressing the ignition button, and even then the restart is delayed, leaving the vehicle stranded in the intersection with cross traffic approaching. This has happened repeatedly and creates a serious safety risk: a vehicle that cannot move out of an intersection can be struck by cross traffic, and occupants, including children, are exposed. No crash, fire, or injury has occurred. There were no warning lamps or messages before the failures. The component is available for inspection upon request. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by a dealer or the manufacturer for this issue. NHTSA is already investigating this exact failure mode in this vehicle population (engineering analysis EA25004, failure to restart after auto idle-stop).
The 2025 Odyssey Elite van randomly will completely stop at stop signs and traffic lights. This happens when the Automatic Idle Stop system is activated. The van will not restart once the brake is released. Instead, we have to go through various start/stop cycles to finally restart the van. This issue has been reported by countless owners and it is time for Honda to do a recall.
Vehicle: 2025 Honda Odyssey Component: Electrical System / Engine / Powertrain (Auto Idle-Stop System) Description of Incident: While driving my 2025 Honda Odyssey, the vehicle experienced a dangerous failure of the Auto Idle-Stop feature. Upon coming to a complete stop at a traffic intersection, the system engaged normally and shut off the engine to conserve fuel. However, when traffic moved and I released the brake pedal to accelerate, the vehicle failed to restart. The engine stalled completely, the vehicle remained entirely immobilized in the middle of active traffic, and the engine could not be restarted automatically by the vehicle's computer systems. To get the vehicle moving again, I had to manually shift the transmission into Park (P) and repeatedly cycle the ignition via the Engine Start/Stop button. This delay left my family and me dangerously exposed to oncoming traffic and vulnerable to a rear-end collision. Diagnostic and Repair History: The vehicle is well within its 3-year factory warranty period. I took the vehicle to an authorized Honda dealership to address this specific defect. The dealership technicians diagnosed a voltage issue and replaced the 12V battery, claiming this would resolve the problem. However, the exact same failure occurred again shortly after leaving the dealership. The battery replacement did not fix the root cause. Safety Concern: Local dealership technicians do not currently possess a viable or permanent corporate fix from Honda for this issue. This creates a severe and unpredictable safety hazard where the vehicle can randomly stall and immobilize itself at busy intersections, highway off-ramps, or left-turn lanes. Honda must issue an immediate safety alert and an official recall to replace the defective starter motor components or update the Engine Control Module (ECM) software before an injury or fatal accident occurs.
At 10 AM on Saturday, October 10, 2026, I experienced an issue with my 2025 Odyssey Touring while stopped at a traffic light waiting to turn left. The auto start-stop feature failed after around 1-2 minutes when I was about to go forward. The car was automatically put in accessory mode and I had to power cycle the car (park, turn off, restart) in the middle of a green turn. Had hazards on. Thankfully, I got it restarted before the next green but this is not acceptable. Serious safety issue. I am concerned this will happen again, so this feature will stay disabled until addressed by Honda.
I purchased a brand-new 2025 Honda Odyssey in June 2024. The vehicle currently has approximately 18,000 miles. The Auto Idle Stop system has repeatedly shut the engine off at traffic lights and failed to restart it. When this occurs, the engine does not crank, the dashboard remains illuminated, the radio and other accessories shut down, and the display instructs the driver to press the brake to start the engine. Pressing the brake and attempting to restart the vehicle does not work. The vehicle may remain disabled for several minutes before eventually restarting normally. This has happened multiple times. The vehicle has been taken to Honda dealerships twice specifically for this problem, but the technicians have been unable to duplicate the failure. On a separate oil-change visit, the battery tested low and was replaced. The restart failures have continued. Approximately two months ago, my wife experienced this failure while stopped at a traffic light. While the Odyssey was immobilized and unable to restart, a motorcycle struck the rear of the vehicle and fled the scene. The vehicle sustained damage. No police report was filed at the time. I am extremely concerned that this intermittent failure creates a serious safety hazard for my family and other motorists. I request that NHTSA investigate this recurring failure, including its potential connection to previously reported Honda Auto Idle Stop restart problems.
2025 Honda Odyssey. The auto idle-stop shuts the engine off at red lights as designed, but the engine intermittently fails to restart when the brake is released. Some days it happens, some days it does not; on occasion twice in one day. Restarting requires pressing the start button repeatedly. No warning lights appear before or during the failure. The vehicle is left stalled in active intersections when the light turns green, creating a risk of rear-end collision. The issue occurs only with auto idle-stop enabled.
While at a red light or complete stop, the car completely shuts down and often have to manually restart it. Sent it in for repairs twice. Once they replaced the battery. That did not help. Brought it in again and they worked on it. It seemed to help for awhile but now the car randomly will turn off at a stop sign or have a very slow start. It is very dangerous because traffic can be going or a light can turn green and the car needs to be restarted and often cannot be done quickly. Going to take it in again but googled this problem and it seems there are multiple complaints of an auto stop/start issue. It seems if I turn the auto start/stop off, it may help resolve the problem, but I cannot permanently do this. This is a dangerous situation
The idle auto stop is designed by default, multiple times the engine stopped in front of a red light and couldn’t start the engine right away. Sometimes need multiple times to restart the engine
Auto Idle Stop feature wouldn't restart vehicle while at an intersection. The vehicle eventually restarted, but not without causing traffic disruption. It took the entire light cycle(red-> green -> red) for my wife to be able to manually(had to push the start button several times) for the car to eventually restart. Warning light on dash said something to the effect of "unable to engage "something"(wife cannot remember, she was panicking due to being stalled in the middle of the road) This not the firs time this has happened, and we have had it in for this before but the the dealership has not been able to find any issue to date. Honda factory also is aware of the issue(maybe for over a year now, but still has not found a fix)
My Honda Odyssey shuts the engine off at a stop under Auto Idle Stop and then fails to restart when I release the brake. I have to shift to Park and press the start button. This has happened at least 5 times, including today, while stopped at a traffic light at a busy intersection. The van was immobilized in active traffic. Extremely dangerous situation.
The car’s starter has issues. Shortly after I bought the car, it had trouble starting. Twice, I had to restart the car at stoplights too. They changed my battery. Now it has issues starting again. It sounds like it almost won’t start. It sounds like it’s using a lot of power to start the car.
The car stalls out/does not start back up when Idle Stop is used. This causes a risk for an accident as the vehicle does not more forward when it should. This now happens daily for the past month. This happened in the past with this same vehicle and the starter was replaced by the Honda Dealership Service Department. It is going into the Honda dealership Service Department on 10/5/2026.
when car stopped at light, engine will turn off and go into park and will not start again unless the car is turned off completely, wait a few minutes and then restart the car. This has been happening since 2/2026 and reported Ed Voyles Honda Dealership twice and this was not identified. Their action in the receipt attached below.
The auto start/stop feature shuts my car off and doesnt start back up when I let off the brake pedal. It has done this 3 times while at a red light and its very dangerous getting stuck in the middle of the street with my kids in the car.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey Elite has recurring, intermittent difficulty restarting after the Auto Idle Stop system shuts the engine off at a stop. I purchased the vehicle in December 2024, and it currently has approximately 37,000 miles. When attempting to restart, the engine sounds as though it is struggling to turn over. Most of the time it eventually restarts automatically, but on some occasions it fails to restart automatically and I must use the ENGINE START/STOP button. An intermittent dashboard message sometimes appears during these events but disappears before I can read it. The problem occurs even after long drives and sometimes appears worse after a long drive. The vehicle has also struggled to restart using the push button after being parked for approximately one to five minutes following driving. It typically starts normally otherwise. A Honda dealership previously replaced the starter to address this problem. The vehicle improved for a period after that repair, but the symptoms have returned. The underlying cause of the recurring problem has not been confirmed. Failure to restart after an automatic engine shutdown leaves the vehicle unable to proceed from a stop until the engine restarts, creating a risk of a collision in traffic. The problem remains unresolved. Please consider this report in connection with NHTSA investigation EA25004 concerning failure to restart after Auto Idle Stop.
On numerous occasions, the START/STOP idle system could not restart the engine. Happens often but not predictably.
My car has stalled numerous times when it stops, and the engine goes into the fuel saving off mode. It stalls when I try to drive away as my foot comes off the brake. This has happened more times than I can count. In addition, as a side not I rented another 2025 Honda odyssey, and it also died when trying to go. The dealer has supposedly driven my vehicle when we bring it in but never has reproduced it according to them. They did admit that they knew about it but had no solution at present. There only response was to say to turn the engine shut off switch to disable it. There are warning lights after it dies but not before.
Several (more than 5) times over the past 2 months my car has had the same issue occur. The automatic Idle Stop feature was turned on and the engine was idling at a stop sign or red light. When I went to press on the gas to begin driving again, my engine would not restart and I received an error message. I was unable to change gears and had to manually turn off my engine, wait a few seconds and restart the engine, and then put back into drive. Again, this has happened several times over the past couple months. My safety was at risk because I was at risk of beging in an accident if the car behind me started to drive when the light turned green, not realizing I was stuck with an engine in idle mode, unable to drive my car.
Idle Stop system - NHTSA EA 25004 My 2025 Odyssey fails its auto-restart from a stoplight, stumbles, and then has a very rough secondary start.
I’ll be at a red light and when it’s time to go the car is off and I have to put on the emergency lights until I get car on usually after three times of pressing the brake and pushing the start button. The car shuts off while idling at a red light and does not turn back on when brake is released.
On September 25, 2026, I was stopped at a traffic light in my 2025 Honda Odyssey when the automatic idle stop activated. I was at a busy intersection with a line of cars behind me. When the light turned green, I took my foot off the brake and pressed the accelerator, but the vehicle shut off. I tried several times to restart the vehicle but was unsuccessful. It took several minutes before I was finally able to get the vehicle started again. During that time, I had a line of cars behind me waiting for me to move. Being stuck at a busy intersection with a vehicle that would not restart was very unsafe. I was concerned that a vehicle behind me could hit me because I was unable to move when the light changed. There were no warning lights or messages before this happened. This has never happened before. There was no accident or injury, and the vehicle is available for inspection. I have an appointment with a Honda dealership on October 9, 2026, to have the automatic idle stop failure investigated.
> While driving our Honda Odyssey, we have experienced a recurring and extremely serious safety issue involving the vehicle’s Auto Idle Stop/Auto Stop feature. When the vehicle comes to a stop at an intersection, the system automatically shuts the engine off as designed. However, on multiple occasions, when it is time to proceed, the vehicle has failed to restart. The engine remains off and we are unable to immediately get the vehicle restarted or move it out of the roadway. > > **This is not an isolated incident. This problem has occurred frequently and has recently begun occurring with increasing frequency.** We are extremely concerned that the condition is becoming progressively worse and that we cannot predict when the vehicle will fail to restart after the Auto Idle Stop system activates. > > During one particularly serious incident, the vehicle failed to restart while we were stopped at an intersection. When the traffic signal turned green, our Honda Odyssey remained disabled in the active traffic lane. We attempted to restart the vehicle but could not immediately get it running or move it to a safe location. > > This created an extremely dangerous situation. A vehicle approaching us from behind nearly rear-ended our stopped van. The approaching driver swerved at the last moment and thankfully avoided striking our vehicle, but subsequently crashed their own vehicle. Had that driver not been able to avoid us, we believe this could have resulted in a very serious rear-end collision, significant injuries, or fatalities. > > Because this problem has happened repeatedly and appears to be occurring more frequently, **we have also contacted the Honda dealership, Penske Honda on 96th Street in Indianapolis.
Vehicle intermittently failed to start. On one occasion following an Auto Idle Stop event, the restart was difficult (details in the "additional details" field). The vehicle did not restart as intended after disengaging the brake from Auto Idle Stop and manually restarted causing a several second delay in the roadway. On another occasion, after filling for gas, the engine cranked normally but did not start on the first attempt and started normally on the second attempt. Honda dealer diagnosed a defective starter and is replacing under warranty. Replacement starter is currently on national back order. Vehicle is included in NHTSA's active investigation (EA25004) regarding Odyssey starting/no-restart issues. General Guidelines responses: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? -Starter, available upon request until replaced by dealer How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? -The delay in the roadway could have caused an accident (to me and others) when the vehicle failed to start as intended after the brake was disengaged Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? -Dealer has confirmed there is an issue with the starter and will be replacing it under warranty when it is available from back order Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? -Only the dealer Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? -No prior warning. However, the vehicle does sound "rougher" when it cranks as opposed to my other vehicle now that I'm comparing the two. Restart issues first occurred within the last week.
Drove over railroad tracks and the seat belts locked up on the driver and passenger. Smelled smoke right after.
Several dozen times now the vehicle’s engine shuts off at a stop via the auto engine stop system when depressing the brake. When releasing the break, the car engine doesn’t restart. It requires putting the car into park, turning off the car via the ignition button, and turning it back on. This has happened 5 times at a busy intersection, and people start honking. Now when it happens, I need to put the emergency blinkers on before starting the entire restart process. I try to press the auto engine shutoff button when I turn the car on so this doesn’t happen, but I often forget. There should be an easy way to disable this incredibly unsafe feature, considering we usually have young children passengers.
The car's auto start stop shut off and did not restart. It took over a minute at a stop light of a busy intersection to get the car to restart. This has occurred multiple times now.
Engine won't start. This problem began as intermittent no start after driving for more than 30 minutes in hot weather. Such as stopping for fuel or a roadside rest on the interstate. It has progressed to intermittent no start in the mornings, or after work. Or after short drives for errands. Vehicle has been evaluated by the Honda Service Center. They stated they couldn't reproduce the problem, but it is a known problem. They also stated that there isn't any parts available. And there won't be any parts available until January 2027 or later. I asked what's my options, this car isn't reliable and it's going to leave my family stranded. The service center told us to not use AIS (Auto idle stop) We haven't used it since we bought it. No loaner, rental or other options. No replacement parts for 5-6 months isn't acceptable. This vehicle only has 20,000 miles and is 18 months old
With auto idle stop enabled, the engine frequently fails to restart upon brake release. To restart the engine, I have to turn the car off and back on again using the engine start button. This has happened many times at traffic lights if I forget to disable the auto idle stop. Twice in the last month I have almost been hit by the car behind. The Honda dealership was unable to recreate the issue. It is apparent that many other new model Honda Odysseys are also experiencing this same issue from an online search, leading me to suspect Honda has a hazardous design deficiency.
The Auto Idle Stop (AIS) failed to work properly for my wife when she was stopped at a stoplight. When she stopped at a stoplight the engine stopped. When she took her foot off the break and applied pressure on the gas pedal a warning of some sort showed on the screen where the speedometer is and the car failed to restart and move forward. This caused a hazard because the people behind her lurched forward because they assumed she would move forward once the light turned green. When our car failed to start she wasn't sure what to do to fix the problem so all the cars backed up behind her for a short time before she realized she needed to put our car in park, turn it off and then restart the engine. I will take my car in to the dealer as soon as possible. Until then we will have to disengage the auto stop function so prevent any further dangerous incidents.
The issue is that auto-idle intermittently does not restart. There have been multiple instances when the car has failed to restart after auto-idle, and most recently, this happened in the middle of the day on a very busy road at a red light. Stopped at the red light, the auto-idle turned the car off and it did not restart. I had to sit with the vehicle until I was able to get it restarted, which took about 4 minutes. Being on such a busy road, it caused a traffic backup with other vehicles having to move from behind me, causing others to swerve into other lanes and also drivers approaching to slam on brakes. As for warning light-there are none until the car stalls, and then every warning lights seems to come on. At that point, the warning lights are useless as the issue has already occurred without warning, causing an immediate safety risk to me, as well as drivers around me. We took the car to the dealer, which said they have had to repair multiple vehicles of the same make and model for this very issue. We had to pay for the full repair, as the car is recently out of the warranty coverage.
Auto stop start sometimes doesn't work even though battery was just replaced. Sitting at stoplight and when the car turns off with auto stop it does not turn on automatically when trying to move the car. Have to cycle the ignition and sometimes does not start.
2025 Honda Odyssey experienced an Auto Idle Stop no-restart condition. While stopped at a traffic light, the Auto Idle Stop system shut the engine off, but the engine failed to restart when attempting to proceed. The vehicle was disabled at an intersection, creating a potential safety hazard.
9/22/2026- the car idle stop failed to restart at a intersection. 9/23/2026- the car did not start after stopping to get gas. I have not taken it to the dealer yet. Will do it as soon as I get a chance. When the idle stop fails the car shift into parking and only the accessories are on.
Problem with the idle auto off feature failing in traffic. Will be driving fine, come up to a stop (at a stoplight, stop sign, etc) and the engine will shut off as intended with auto off, but engine will then fail to restart/stall. Have to push the start button on/off several times before the engine will restart and we can continue driving, the delay leads to safety concerns and possibility of an accident with traffic behind us accelerating expecting our vehicle to be moving or other drivers not being able to predict our actions due to erratic start/stop. There is no option to permanently disable the auto start/stop. No warning or maintenance lights indicating there's a problem. This issue has happened 5-10 times since we purchased the vehicle late 2024. We have not taken the vehicle in to the dealer yet.
This car has on multiple occasions now just turned off the Enginee when stop at a stop light and the Enginee idle feature is on. It makes you restart the car when you are trying to go from a stop light this is dangerous and causes angry driver behind you. I took my one year old car to the Honda dealership and they said they couldn’t help. This is a safety issue. It’s happening more and more frequently
Multiple instances of the auto start not reengaging while stopped at intersection. Have to completely shut off and restart vehicle.
We have had several incidences occur with the auto idle stop system. It has failed to restart at stop lights/signs, car turns off and you must restart it. It happens unexpectedly without warning and you do not realize it until you press on the gas pedal. It causes panic and anxiety due to traffic behind you. It has also occurred in parking lots and in our driveway. One incident occurred on a trip, driving for a long distance and then pulling off the road to stop, the car turned off and took several tries to restart it. We thought we were going to have call a tow truck. Luckily we were off the road and it did finally restart. Scary rest of the long drive home. We have not noticed any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to failure. We are extremely worried we will cause an accident if we leave the auto idle stop system on. We try to remember to always turn it off. This has been happening since we bought the car brand new. The auto dealership has checked it and cannot find a problem and are of no help. We noticed a forum on the internet where there is an ongoing investigation into the problem. Hopefully, something will be remedied to be able to fix it. Until then we have to remember to press the system off button.
When traveling to multiple destinations, upon attempting to start the van, it will not start. This is also the case with the auto start/stop program. The van's engine will stop at dangerous locations, such as a busy traffic light, or at any other stop where the engine turns off. There were no warning lights, but the van would only start if tried multiple times. This is incredibly dangerous and nerve-wracking.
During auto idle stop (usually happens after more than 5 seconds in idle stop) the van will stall (put itself in park and engine turns off). Restarting takes approximately 30 seconds because the van will not turn back on right away no matter how many times the ignition/start button is pressed. I was advised by the dealership we purchased the van from, to allow it to happen more frequently so that it can be properly diagnosed so we have not been turning off the auto idle stop. But I feel this is a safety issue and should be addressed immediately.
Component and availability: The engine fails to restart after Auto Idle Stop shuts it off and now also fails to start on normal starts. The failure involves the Auto Idle Stop system and the engine starting system. The vehicle is available for inspection on request. What happened and safety risk: On approximately 8/5, I was stopped at a stop sign with Auto Idle Stop engaged. The engine shut off as designed but did not restart when I released the brake, and the vehicle automatically shifted into Park. The start button would not restart the engine, the vehicle could not be shifted out of Park, and the button also would not turn the vehicle off. The vehicle was stranded in an active intersection, where other drivers had to go around it, until it eventually restarted after several tries. Since then we have turned off Auto Idle Stop on every drive, but the vehicle has now also failed to start on normal starts: 9/17, 9/18 and several others in the 8/5-9/17 period. The car would not crank and start, it would only start after several (3-5) tries. A vehicle that cannot be reliably started or restarted risks leaving the driver and passengers stranded in traffic or unsafe locations. Dealer confirmation: This car has been seen by the dealer previously (i.e., in summer 2025) with the same issue, and had battery and starter system replaced. However, the issue recurred after several months. This vehicle appears to fall within NHTSA investigation EA25004 (Auto Idle Stop failure to restart). Warning signs: No warning lamps or messages appeared before or during the failures; dashboard and interior lights worked normally throughout. The only earlier symptom was slow or rough engine restarts after Auto Idle Stop on hot days.
2025 Honda Odyssey - seems to have issue with auto-start auto-stop. Frequently, the minivan is unable to turn back on after it auto-turns off when stopped at a light or somewhere. Creates very dangerous situation because I am stuck as the driver, and the car is unresponsive. You have to put car in park, turn off the car, turn it back on, put in drive. People are honking and in one case we almost got hit because it was a stop around a turn and we couldn't move. I've checked for recall and it's not there. I'm taking it in to Honda dealer as soon as available. It's not everytime, but it's frequent. Probably happened 4 times in last two weeks.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey has repeatedly failed to automatically restart after the Auto Idle Stop system shuts the engine off while stopped at traffic lights or in stop-and-go highway traffic. The problem began approximately four months ago and is intermittent, occurring roughly once per week. When the problem occurs, the Auto Idle Stop system shuts the engine off normally while the driver is stopped with a foot on the brake. When the driver releases the brake, the engine does not restart as it should; instead, the vehicle automatically shifts into Park and the instrument panel displays “Accessory Mode” or similar wording. The driver must then press the brake pedal and push the engine start/stop button repeatedly to restart the vehicle. So far, the vehicle has eventually restarted each time, but it can take approximately 2–3 minutes and multiple attempts. This creates a significant safety hazard because the vehicle becomes disabled in an active traffic lane, including at busy intersections and in stop-and-go highway traffic, while the driver attempts to restart it.
The start stop malfunctioned. This put my family at risk of being rearended when others were trying to move at a green light and I was stalled.
The vehicle will slam on its brakes with nothing around it. This has happened more times than I can count now and has almost caused us to wreck on multiple occasions
This vehicle will randomly turn these features on and instead of keeping you in your lane pull you off the road, I have had to pull over to turn the vehicle off to get it to turn off
Would die at lights and so on, starter replaced and its started doing it again. Dies at lughts, stalls out at stops then will hesitate to start again and will throw itself forward making a clunky noise
The automatic door will not close. It will bounce back open like something is in the way when nothing is. You either have to turn that feature off and close it or you sit there hitting the button 40 times for it to finally decide to close. Has been happening for months and have brought it up to the dealership repeatedly. I have multiple videos of this issue
The transmission has been having issues since it had 10 miles on it, it locks at certain speeds and wont go higher than 35, it misfires at lights, it will randomly make clunking sounds when driving and you can feel the vehicle throw you forward, ive taken it in multiple times, we have multiple cases open with Honda and they will not respond but it doesnt give any lights so dealership says they cant do anything even though theyve said they have felt it
Screen wont turn on, it just stays black, sometimes it will start to work sometimes it doesnt without the car being turned off and turned back on. Apple and android play dont work always, it just randomly decides to work sometimes
Vehicle auto engine stop engages at intersections. Car fails to restart when system is supposed to reengage. The vehicle then has to have ignition restarted causing unanticipated dangerous situations. There is no warning that the system will fail to reengage and the problem is intermittent. This has happened several different times causing dangerous traffic hazards.
.Auto off feature malfunctioned in traffic light .The vehicle's engine powered off while resting at stop light and the brake pedal was pressed .When the light turned green, lifted the foot off the brake pedal. The vehicle automatically went into park mode and locked itself. .The cars behind me went honking as it is a single lane road forming a massive line, since my vehicle stalled. .Had to turn the power off the vehicle and turn it back on, in the middle of the road while blocking everyone else behind me. .Issue occurs frequently
My auto start-stop idle function is malfunctioning. When I stop at a traffic stop light or the car comes to a stop, the car completely stalls when pressing the accelerator to go forward. This is resulting in very confusing and chaotic situations in the middle of the road with cars behind me honking. I need to turn off the engine completely and then wait a few seconds and then restart the car before going again. This is creating hazardous conditions on the road for my family and other cars.
My wife had just got off of the Interstate in Raleigh, NC and pulled to a stop light and the Auto Idle shutoff took over and stopped the engine. When my wife took her foot off the brake the motor cut off and stalled the behind in traffic. It was supposed to start the engine but did not. It then displayed a transmission error and took a minute or so before the transmission reset and allowed her to restart the vehicle. An online research shows this is a common issue with the Honda odyssey. We contacted the dealership and they have refused to complete the repair. And stated it doesn’t affect our year model.
The vehicle experiences a sudden and complete engine stall while at a complete stop in traffic (such as a red light) due to a failure of the Auto Idle Stop (AIS) system. The engine shuts down smoothly as intended by the fuel-saving feature, but fails to restart when the brake pedal is released or the accelerator is pressed. The vehicle drops into a total shutdown state, requiring the driver to fully shift into Park, switch the ignition completely off, and manually press the Start button to restart the engine. No warning lights, error codes, or dashboard messages appear before, during, or after the failure. This creates a severe safety hazard by leaving the vehicle unexpectedly stranded and unresponsive in active intersections.
The Auto Idle Stop system intermittently fails to restart the engine after the system shuts the engine off while the vehicle is stopped. When this happens, the vehicle remains disabled and I have to completely restart the vehicle before I can continue driving. This has happened twice while stopped in highway traffic. On both occasions, traffic began moving while my vehicle failed to restart, creating an immediate crash risk and nearly resulting in collisions from vehicles behind me. The problem is intermittent. The vehicle has previously been brought to a Honda dealership for this concern, but the failure continues. I have contacted the dealership again and have also contacted the manufacturer regarding the issue. There were no consistent warning signs before the failure. The problem occurs after the Auto Idle Stop system activates. Because the vehicle may fail to restart unexpectedly in active traffic, I am concerned that the condition presents a serious safety risk to the occupants of the vehicle and surrounding motorists. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. This condition appears consistent with NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA25-004 involving Auto Idle Stop no-restart complaints on Honda Odyssey vehicles.
The van got stuck in park after backing out of a parking lot. Changed to drive but gear shift back to park. Have to restarted the car twice. People were honking nonstop. This is not safe.
My 2025 Odyssey stalls. The engine will turn off when I am stopped and will take at least 2 retries to get the engine to turn over. Once I was at a stop light on an interstate off ramp when it stalled. Once I was at a stop sign when it stalled. Twice I have been unable to start it at a store. I will settle the brake & push the start button & nothing will happen. I will try again. I have to take my foot fully off the brake, wait a few seconds, & try the steps again. It eventually starts, but I'm afraid that someone will hit me and hurt my children or myself as I'm a sitting duck.
My vehicle has failed to restart numerous times at stoplights with the auto start engaged. It also failed once when it was disengaged. It also stalls to start on initial start quite often. Even when it is disengaged, upon stopping my vehicle makes a type of quiver in the engine that sounds like a stall or like it is about to cut off. It usually evens out after 5-10 seconds. I had people drive around me, in heavy traffic, after a major fail at a red light. I had an aggressive drive pass around me quickly at another incident at a smaller redlight intersection. I have had it cut off, with my family, over 50mls away from home. A dealership replaced my battery that was under warranty. I was told there were no other issues and to keep my auto start disengaged while driving. I'm not sure that is my safest option at this point. I am extremely concerned it will happen at an intersection and I will roll into traffic with my family.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while coming to a complete stop at a red light or a stop sign, the vehicle stalled and shut off unintendedly. There was no warning light. The vehicle was restarted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that there was an ongoing investigation associated with the failure. The vehicle was not repaired.
On Tuesday, September 8, 2026 while sitting idle at a red light I had my foot on the brake and when the light turned green, I went to push on the gas and the van would not go, nearly causing the car behind me to rear end me because they figured I was going since it was a green light. I turned my hazard lights on, and there was a warning that appeared on the dash but I did not catch what it said in time. When I looked down, the car had put itself in park so I shut the van off and when I turned the van back on, there was a red battery light on the dash and it said “ to continue to drive depress brake pedal and push switch”. The van would not go into gear so I then had to call police (I was blocking a traffic lane) and a tow truck. The van is still at our local Honda dealer where it was purchased and to my knowledge has not been looked at-today is day three of the dealership having possession of the van. Also, on the same day-two stop lights previous to this it had a severe lag from brake to gas.
The idle restart function causes the van to shut off completely when at stop lights in heavy traffic. It does not immediately restart and we have to sit in traffic while folk are honking at us to go. It doesn’t do this every time, but has happened 3 times in the last 3 months.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while at a complete stop in traffic, the Auto START/STOP system failed to restart the vehicle on several occasions, and the vehicle was manually restarted. The contact stated that the failure had become more frequent and posed a safety risk for the family. The manufacturer, American Honda, was notified of the failure by phone, and the contact was provided a case number and referred to a dealer to have the vehicle repaired under warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000.
The auto idle system shuts off the vehicle completely at a stoplight or intersection and fails to restart when you release the brake. The vehicle is stuck in traffic and doesn’t restart for a few minutes mine had to be jumped started this THIRD time it happened. This created a hazardous safety condition for my family in which kids are always traveling. The dealer has not provided solution. Concerned this can cause a fatality because I can get rear ended.
I drove my kids 5 miles to school and was on my way back home going thru a school zone with a stop sign. As I stopped at a 4 way stop car went into idle and I went to proceed and car stalled and automatically went into park. I had to wave people around me. Luckily I was able to still put on hazards. The battery light came on, but I was unable to restart my car after several attempts. I opened my door to wave on more people and when I tried to start my car again it finally started. I am so luckily I wasn't at a busy intersection and took a different route home and lucky my kids weren't in the back either. This was very scary and am now worried for it happening again.
My vehicle has been failing to restart at stoplights after the auto start/shutoff turns off the vehicle. Instances where it does start, the starter frequently struggles to kick the engine over and when it does fire the vehicle jerks forward before driving.
Auto Idle Stop malfunction-- it happened twice during my travel (1)[XXX] , around 7pm. The car stalled and failed to restart at a local street of Hasbrouck Heights, NJ after signal turned green; (2) [XXX] around noon. The same problem happened at a [XXX] of Goshen, NY when a semi track was behind me. I reported to NHTSA immediately after the 2nd incident, but I cannot find a confirmation number before going to my dealer, so I re-file the complaint. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The idle stop function failed to restart the vehicle while in traffic at a red light. The vehicle was in traffic on a state highway and was unable to restart without shutting the vehicle off and on again. The problem has happened frequently the past few weeks to where I was able to reproduce and record the incident. The battery light appeared before shutting off the car with the push button on/off.
Engine failed to restart after AutoStop function engaged at a red light. We were stranded and had to manually restart the car, which took long enough to figure out that we were stranded in traffic for a bit.
I am experiencing a serious and recurring safety issue involving the engine unexpectedly completely shutting off while the vehicle is being driven and separately, the engine intermittently failing to start after the vehicle has been parked. 1.The engine unexpectedly and spontaneously shuts off when the vehicle is stopped or slowing down, including at stop signs, traffic lights, and during traffic slowdowns. These events occur without warning or notice, and the vehicle does not reliably restart immediately. In nearly all instances, the engine has failed to restart for several minutes despite multiple attempts. This creates an extremely dangerous situation. When the engine shuts off unexpectedly in traffic, I am concerned that drivers behind me will not realize that my vehicle is experiencing a malfunction and may collide with my vehicle before I am able to restart it and safely move. These incidents cause me significant fear and stress each time they occur. I am not certain whether the vehicle’s Auto Start/Stop system is involved in these incidents or whether another component or system is malfunctioning. I am requesting that Honda and the dealership fully diagnose the cause rather than assuming that the behavior is normal operation of the Auto Start/Stop system. 2.Separately from the engine shutting off while driving, the vehicle also randomly and spontaneously fails to start after it has been parked. I have documented some of these incidents by video, including instances in which the engine failed to start. in which the engine failed to start despite multiple attempts. 3. As soon as these problems began, I took the vehicle to the service department of the dealership where I purchased it. At this point, the repeated engine shut-off and failure-to-restart conditions remain unresolved. I am requesting a thorough investigation and requesting that Honda identify the underlying cause of these failures and provide a permanent solution as soon as possible.
Vehicle restarted itself at a traffic stop to. Vehicle stalled at another traffic stop. Both occurred on the same single day drive.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while at a complete stop in traffic, the idle stop system failed to restart the vehicle, nearly causing the vehicle to be rear-ended. The vehicle was restarted after several attempts. The check engine and battery warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and the battery was replaced; however, the failure recurred while attempting to start the vehicle at the residence. The vehicle was restarted after several attempts with the same warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was determined that the failure might be associated with the starter; however, the contact was informed that no further repairs would be performed until the dealer received a service bulletin from the manufacturer. The failure mileage was approximately 19,000.
It was approximately 8:45 pm at night. I was sitting in my 2025 Honda Odyssey stopped at a red light with my foot on the brake. There were no other cars in front or behind me. It was a long light so the car engine stopped as it usually does due to its auto start-stop system to conserve gas (although electricity in the car remained on). However, when the light turned green, I took my foot off the brake and pressed the accelerator. At that moment, the entire car shut off unexpectedly, including all lights, electricity, etc. It appeared to be a "normal" shutdown as the "check rear passenger seats" indicator flashed before the car turned off (this is expected in a normal shutdown since we have a carseat in the rear seat). Fearful of being rear-ended at night, I quickly pressed the brake and hit the power button (the typical process for turning the car on). Thankfully this worked and the car restarted as normal. It took about 15 seconds for the car to power on such that I could shift the car into Drive and begin driving as normal. After that I proceeded to drive a further 20 minutes on highway + rural roads + stop lights and nothing else happened. - I do not know which component failed, but I suspect it was the starter as the car failed to restart after the auto-start stop system was engaged. - My safety was put at risk as the car was at a traffic light and turned off when I attempted to drive it when the light turned green. This meant my car was sitting in the dark with no lights on, at night, for about 15-30 seconds as I restarted it at a green light. I could have easily been rear ended at high speeds as people would likely not see my car at night trying to go through the green light. - The problem has not been reproduced by a dealer/service center. - It has not been inspected. - No messages prior to the failure.
The vehicle experienced multiple sudden engine stalls while driving in traffic. Specifically, the engine shut off unexpectedly and the transmission automatically shifted into Park (P) while on the road, leaving the vehicle immobilized and unable to be manually shifted out of P. Restarting the vehicle was extremely difficult, which created a severe safety hazard and nearly caused a rear-end collision. The vehicle was inspected and confirmed by an authorized Honda dealer that the starter failed. The starter has since been replaced. The failed component is available for inspection upon request.
Vehicle stalls at stop lights when the air conditioner is on when idle stop is engaged.
For several weeks, my 2025 Honda Odyssey, with approximately 30,000 miles, had been jerking while being driven. An independent mechanic believed the problem might be transmission-related. I brought the vehicle to an authorized Honda dealership, reported the jerking and specifically stated that I suspected a transmission problem. The dealership recommended and performed a transmission-fluid service. On August 24, 2026, at approximately 4:00 p.m., my wife was driving on the New Jersey Turnpike with our children when the vehicle suddenly jerked and behaved as though the transmission was attempting to engage reverse while the vehicle was moving forward. This created an immediate loss of predictable vehicle control and nearly caused an accident. My wife managed to pull into a parking lot. The vehicle then would not move in reverse and displayed a transmission-system warning. The vehicle was returned to the authorized Honda dealership. The dealership subsequently determined that the transmission required replacement, and it is currently being replaced under warranty. No collision or physical injury occurred, but this sudden transmission malfunction placed my wife, our children and other motorists at serious risk. The vehicle is currently at the dealership, and the failed transmission may be available through the dealer or manufacturer. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate whether this is a safety defect affecting the transmission or powertrain in the 2025 Honda Odyssey.
The vehicle comes equipped with “Auto off/on” at stoplights the vehicle will turn itself off to preserve fuel and is supposed to turn back on. Instead the vehicle dies in the middle of the road. I have to turn vehicle back to off and hope it starts back up. When it does finally start, it’s a slow start, it struggles. There’s been two incidents where it had to be jumped in the middle of the road/ intersection. Honda has confirmed it is a bad started. The vehicle is a 2025. There is no reason why the starter should be bad and there is no recalls on this and I’m not the only person with this van that is having the same issue. There needs to be an investigation in this matter.
When I was at the set of lights my vehicle put itself in park and refused to go back in drive. The dashboard started to flash "shift to park" cars were honking at us people we screaming because we weren't driving when the light turned green. But my car refused to go back into drive. I had to shut it off and turn it back on. I had all my kids (5) in the car. I brought it to the dealership and they said that there was no code recorded. And because of that they couldn't do anything about it. Almost as if it didn't happen. Then it has recently happened two more times. I'm bringing my vehicle back in to the dealership, but they told me if it didn't record a code then they couldn't really do anything about it. It was of the scariest things to ever happen. 21
The Auto Idle-Stop system is causing the vehicle to stall at stop signs, requiring a full shift into Park, engine turnoff and turn to restart to get moving again. This has happened two times in four days
2025 Honda Odyssey Elite. Approximately 12,000 miles. Vehicle has experienced 4–5 instances where Auto Idle Stop engages while stopped and the engine fails to restart. Vehicle cannot immediately be restarted with the push-button ignition and must be completely shut down before it will restart. Battery was replaced by Honda, but the condition is ongoing. Vehicle can and has become disabled at an intersections and traffic lights creating a potential collision hazard.
Engine failed to restart after turning off at idle at a stop. When releasing the brake the engine tried to turn on but stalled out. It is available for inspection upon request. No major safety concern, traffic behind the vehicle was prohibited from moving until the vehicle could be restarted. The failure has not been reproduced by a dealer or service center, or inspected by anyone else. There were no warning lights but after the failure a message displayed saying “To continue to drive, depress brake pedal and push switch”. The failure first appeared after 10,000 miles and occurred between 5-10 times since then.
Vehicle was using an off ramp and shutdown in the middle of a lane. It was 10:00pm and all systems were shutdown, including lights. Vehicle refused to restart and could not be placed in neutral, the vehicle could not be removed from the interstate off ramp. This issue has been brought to the attention of Honda, the started assembly was replaced on March 5, 2026. This vehicle has been delivered to Honda for similar electrical/starter issues 4 times since October 27, 2025. The first report was filed with Honda on October 27, 2025 with all lights on dashboard lit when vehicle was active. Had to wait until a tow truck arrived before vehicle could be safely removed from the scene.
Came to a stop at traffic light. Vehicle shifted into park. I was unable to put it back into drive. I shut engine off. After two tries, I was about to start engine again and was able to shift into drive. Incident happened again when I stopped at another traffic light about 2 miles later. Had to restart vehicle in order to enable drive mode.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey shut off in Auto Idle Stop while at a busy intersection. The car was unresponsive and would not engage the motor. After five minutes of trying to turn the car off and on, it eventually restarted and the motor came back to life. This issue put me at great risk of bodily harm. Given the fact the car was unresponsive in such a surprising way, I was very lucky not to have cars crash into me from behind as they few by for the 5 minutes I was stranded. This is the first instance and has not been reproduced as I am too worried to drive the car now. No inspection of the vehicle has been completed as this incident just occurred. No waring light prior to the incident, but the battery warring light did come on while the car shut off and unresponsive.
Engine fails to restart after auto off.
My van will stall at red-lights. It started three weeks ago. The car is a year and a half old. The auto- idle stop system is activated. We stop at a red light. Car stops. When we go to start car dings and thankfully has started 3 times. This time, the car made a ding and did not re-start. I was stuck at a now green light and couldn't move. The dash flashed hit the brake to re-start. I did numerous times. I couldn't get the car to switch to park or drive. I tried switching the car on and off and couldn't get it restarted. I was disabled for about 2 minutes before it kicked back on. My kids were in the car and this scared me.
Our 2025 Honda Odyssey Touring has repeatedly stalled or nearly stalled while driving. Of at least three dealer visits, the stalling issue was first formally documented on XXX, when we reported the engine shutting off twice while driving and the brake warning light activating twice. DTC 15477 ("failing starter") was recorded, and the starter was replaced. XXX, my [XXX] daughter was driving alone when the van lost power at a red light and would not respond to the accelerator once the light turned green. She was unable to shift gears or shut off the engine, and the van remained unresponsive in live traffic for several minutes before power returned on its own. A bystander helped restart the vehicle and move it to safety. I believe this defect is the subject of open NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA25004 (opened XXX), covering 2018–2025 Odyssey and related Honda/Acura models for Auto Idle Stop failing to restart after a stop. On XXX, the dealer confirmed the software was current, the battery was healthy, and replaced both relays, completing every step of Honda's documented repair bulletin. Hours later, on the drive home at 27,942 miles, the van stalled again at a stoplight. The dashboard instructed the driver to depress the brake and press the switch to continue driving. The driver powered the vehicle off and restarted it to regain control. Video of this incident: [XXX]. Dates of incidents: XXX – Two engine shut-off events and two brake warning light events reported; starter replaced. XXX – Daughter's incident described above. XXX – Software, battery, and relays completed per repair bulletin; vehicle stalled again the same day at 27,942 miles. Repair history: Full documented scheduled maintenance and bulletin remedy applied (starter, software, battery, relays) across three or more visits; vehicle stalled again hours after the final step was completed. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I am filing a safety complaint regarding a recurring, severe defect involving the 2025 Honda Odyssey's starter motor and the factory-installed Auto Idle-Stop (idle-stop) system. While driving, the vehicle's Auto Idle-Stop system engaged as designed when coming to a complete stop in traffic. However, when trying to accelerate, the vehicle failed to restart automatically. The engine completely stalled out on an active roadway. Attempts to manually override the system and restart the vehicle using the ignition button failed completely, resulting in an immediate and dangerous loss of propulsion. This defect presents a severe and immediate traffic hazard, as it unexpectedly leaves the vehicle completely disabled and stranded in active lanes of traffic. It strips the driver of the ability to clear the roadway to safety, significantly increasing the risk of a rear-end collision. Multiple occupants, including passengers in the rear seats, were exposed to extreme danger due to this sudden propulsion failure.Despite bringing the vehicle to an authorized Honda dealership, the manufacturer has failed to provide a permanent safety remedy. Also Honda corporate has deny warranty replacement for the starter that’s causing the issue.
Starter failure due to heat. Vehicle has failed to restart several times while stopped in traffic and at a traffic light due to the Auto Idle Stop function.
Engine failed to restart during Auto Idle Stop event. Nearly created an accident.
The vehicle experiences sudden, intermittent engine stalling while idling (either when coming to a stop at traffic lights or while idling in traffic). The engine shuts down completely and fails to automatically restart via the Auto Idle-Stop feature, forcing the driver to manually cycle the ignition or shift to Park to restart. This has happened multiple times since I bought the car at Stevens Creek Honda in September 2025 and have taken it to get it service at Livermore Honda in November 2025 and again in August 2026. The dealer has been notified but the defect remains unresolved, presenting an immediate safety risk of being rear-ended in active traffic due to sudden loss of propulsion.
5 times since July 2026 the vehicle 2025 Honda Odyssey fills with the smell of gas. The smell fills the entire garage. After the 4th incident, it was brought to the dealership on 8/18/2026, however they were unable to reproduce the issue smell. They stated the EVAP system was function and at the time there were no obvious leaks. Despite it being a known issue, there are no recall or repairs per the dealership. They stated that Honda is apparently aware and are "investigating." The smell recurred today and was immediately brought to the dealership since the problems was not reproduced when previously in their possession. It was noted by multiple staff member but since there is no known fix, there was nothing the dealership could do. They are aware of several other Honda Odysseys with this issue in the same area. I was instructed not to park the vehicle in the garage which makes me concerned for mine and my family's safety. The smell can be very overwhelming and makes me lightheaded.
After stopping at a red light the engine auto stopped and would not restart after releasing the brake. After 20 minutes of trying to turn the vehicle on/off it finally restarted. Serious safety concern since it was a busy road and the vehicle couldn’t be put into neutral to push it out of the lane. The vehicle is under 20,000 miles and in the warranty period. I haven’t taken it to the dealership to determine the issue however they did say there are no service bulletins for this issue. This is the first time it has happened but I have since turned off the auto start/stop before every drive in fear that it will cause a crash in the future.
My car, 2025 Honda Odyssey intermittently develops a raw gasoline odor inside the passenger compartment, particularly when traveling over bumps/rough pavement. Honda dealer inspected the vehicle and could not identify a leak or reproduce the problem.
While driving our 2025 Honda Odyssey, my wife came to a complete stop at a red traffic light. The vehicle’s Auto Idle Stop feature was enabled, as it is by default each time the vehicle is started. When the light turned green and she attempted to accelerate, the vehicle would not move. The engine appeared to be running/revving when she pressed the accelerator, but the vehicle remained stationary as though the brake was still engaged. A message appeared on the instrument panel instructing her to depress the brake pedal and press the start/stop button. Initially, we believed the electronic parking brake might have been engaged, so she attempted to disengage it, but this did not resolve the problem. She was stuck in an active traffic lane at an intersection and unable to move the vehicle, creating a significant safety concern. Another person advised her to completely turn the vehicle off, wait approximately 10 seconds, and restart it. After doing so, the vehicle operated normally again. After this incident, I learned that NHTSA is already investigating Auto Idle Stop/no-restart complaints involving Honda vehicles, including 2025 Honda Odysseys, under Engineering Analysis EA25-004. I also learned that Honda has previously communicated with dealers regarding Auto Idle Stop no-restart incidents involving 2023–2025 Odysseys. This was an extremely concerning failure because the vehicle unexpectedly became immobilized at a traffic light and could not be driven until it was shut down and restarted. I am concerned that this could happen again in a much more dangerous situation. I am submitting this complaint so that this incident is documented as part of NHTSA’s investigation and to request that NHTSA determine whether a safety recall or other corrective action is necessary.
While waiting at a stop light, the engine turned off and the vehicle forced itself into park. Taking my foot off the brake, had no effect. I was not able to put the vehicle back into drive. I had to shut off the engine and restart it in order to drive again. Of note, the AC and carplay were running at the time of the engine failure. No warning lights appeared. Cars behind me were honking at me. I have an appointment scheduled with the dealership to assess the auto-idle function.
Vehicle turns off unexpectantly at red lights/intersections when auto idle engages and will not restart automatically. It takes 1 to 2 minutes for the vehicle to restart. There is no predicting when the issue occurs. Causes vehicle to be immobile in busy and congested intersections which results in safety issues to us and oncoming traffic. There is a potential for a head on or T-bone collision when this happens. We've had starter replaced before at 22,000 miles and now we have to do it again at 36,000 miles. The Honda dealer said he sees this issue twice a week so we aren't the only ones. To my knowledge, Honda has yet to come out with a permanent repair.
My car slammed on the brakes on its own. I was almost rear ended. I was going 45-50 miles an hour. I think it saw a shadow. Previously it has alerted me to brake because of shadows. This is the first time it braked hard on its own.
At a stop light and in traffic several times the vehicle has failed to restart when stopping for the idle start/stop. The vehicle will not immediately restart and takes several minutes, leaving me idle in the middle of traffic. The vehicle has been to the dealership several times for repair however I'm still experiencing this issue. This is a serious safety concern for my family.
Starter issue both during idle start/stop mode and going from off to on. Owned for about 20mos and happened first maybe 6mos ago and has happened a dozen times since then. So dangerous! We have had idle start freeze at a green light and are worried we’ll get hit. Sister in law has the same problem with hers. This needs to be fixed immediately!
When the engine is hot, the car hesitates to start for a couple seconds. Occurs on really hot days especially after stopping and starting the engine such as after getting gas or on idle stop at a redlight. The motor starter has been replaced by Honda to a new one but the issue can re-occur as the part being replaced is the same with the same build and will likely fail again in hot conditions.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while sitting at a traffic light, with the Auto START/STOP feature engaged, the vehicle completely shut off. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts. The failure was a recurring failure. The battery was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Action Number: EA25004 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.
While at a stop light on a major road, the vehicles auto start stop engaged. Upon the light turning green, I released the brake and vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle put itself into park and flashed a warning message "problem detected....." . I pressed the start button, and at first the vehicle failed to start, making a clicking sound, consistent with a dead battery or starter. I had to press the start button 4 times before the vehicle restarted and I could proceed. I was extremely concerned as I had my wife and three kids in the car, unable to move forward on a major roadway. I have an appointment at the dealer for this Friday.
I was at the red light and the car wouldn't come out of idle. The battery light came on and the i tried to turn the car off and it just keeps cycling. I had to open the door for the car to cut off and then restart the car. This is the 3rd time this has happened and almost resulted in me and my children being hit.
While stopped at a red light or intersection, the vehicle's Auto Idle Stop feature engages and shuts off the engine as designed. However, on multiple occasions, the engine has failed to automatically restart when the brake pedal is released. The vehicle remains stalled and unresponsive in the middle of the intersection or traffic lane, creating a safety risk to myself and other drivers, particularly at busy intersections. In some instances, the vehicle needed to be fully powered off and restarted before it would move again. This is a known and widely reported defect affecting Honda and Acura vehicles with the Auto Idle Stop system, currently under NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA25004. The problem has occurred repeatedly and unpredictably, with no consistent warning beforehand. The vehicle and its Auto Idle Stop system are available for inspection upon request. The problem has not yet been confirmed by a dealer, though I intend to bring it in for diagnosis. There were no warning lamps or messages before the failures occurred; the only symptom was the engine simply not restarting after an automatic idle stop.
After driving the vehicle and stoppping for gas or to run a quick errand the van sometimes will not start, or gives difficulty starting. Slow to crank or turn over, sometimes has to be started multiple times before it will restart. It happens after the motor has been running. It never has issues first thing or the first time turning the car on for the day. The issues come once the motor has been run. -took the vehicle in to Honda dealer on 6/8/26 they recharged the battery. -7/9/26 took van into Honda dealer they replaced the battery. 8/15/26 van still having issues starting once engine warm. Dealership said starter is failing and replaced the starter.
Sometimes the engine wouldn't start. Sometimes the engine would be slow to start. Checked battery and nothing wrong with it. Took it to Honda and asked to look into common starter problem. They did say the starter was faulty and replaced it.
Vehicle with 37k miles. When the idle stop feature is activated at a stop, it causes the vehicle to stall requiring a restart. The starter occasionally does not work as well. Starter and battery was replaced at 12k and the issue has resurfaced. This poses a significant safety risk.
Auto start stop feature caused car to shut off at lights- happened 4-5x. Very dangerous. Battery replaced but then still had issues. Starter replaced.
Starter is very weak when hot. 2 hour drive in summer heat and the van would not start after stopping at a gas station.
My van has an auto-stop feature that shuts the engine off at stop lights. This feature will now occasionally shut the car off, but then fail to restart it. We have stalled out at intersections with the van not restarting for up to a full minute. This is incredibly dangerous and needs to be addressed immediately
I was stopped at a stop sign and my 2025 Honda Odyssey shut off. I stopped the AIS engaged, then when I took my foot off the brake the engine didn't engage. The car wouldn't move. I took me about 30 seconds to get the mini van's engine to engage. This is the second time this type of incident has happened.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that her husband had the rear drivers side door open while leaning halfway in to the vehicle when the door suddenly began to close unintentionally, the contacts husband began to frantically push on the door until it was dislodged from the channel. No warning lights were illuminated. The local dealer was contacted however the vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 50,000.
Auto idle/stop system engages while sitting at a traffic signal as designed. When attempting to proceed, the engine fails to restart and all electrical components completely shut off for several minutes. All components stop working (information screen, gauges, hazard lights, and door locks are non-functional) and the vehicle is unable to turn on for several minutes. This creates an unreasonable safety risk for the occupants of the vehicle and for surrounding motorists when this failure occurs in active traffic lanes as the vehicle when it is reasonably expected for the vehicle to resume propulsion and with no ability to turn on hazard lights to warn approaching motorists of the vehicle's disabled status. The failure of the door locks during the event traps the occupants inside the vehicle, which we are in Florida so, hot summer days the internal temperatures can reach deadly levels within minutes with no way to escape. The vehicle was initially inspected by a manufacturer authorized dealer service department on 7/8/25 and the issue was dismissed. The vehicle was again inspected on 7/30/25 by the same service department and confirmed. A starter motor assembly and relays were replaced by the dealership and the vehicle returned to use on 8/4/25. Again, on 8/5/26 the vehicle exhibited the same safety defect while in an active traffic lane. The vehicle was returned to the same service department on 8/6/26 where it remains as the date of this report with no communication on resolution for the problem from the manufacturer. There were no warning lights or messages prior to the failure.
Numerous times since purchasing my van it has failed to start. At first it was just random at a stop light when I would forget to turn off the idle stop. Leaving me stuck at stop lights with a vehicle that won't turn on without multiple attempts. More recently it struggles to start after stopping to run errands or get gas or in drive thru lines. Having to depress the break pedal to the floor (much further than needed to even stop the car) and press and hold the on/off button while it chugs and attempts to start. The issue was able to be recreated by the dealer and they indicate that it is a starter issue but the part is on back order. Upon further discussion it appears that this isn't an unknown issue and that there is a current investigation into this issue. However, the service manager indicated to me that this isn't common and this was a "one off" incident.
I have now had three instances within the last three months where my car has stalled out at traffic lights when the Idle Stop was engaged. The first two times, the car stalled out when I pressed the shut off switch for the Idle Stop on the center console. I am not sure about the first time since I was surprised the car stalled. The second time it happened, I hit the button twice in immediate succession and then the car stalled. The third instance was this past Thursday, 8/6/26. I did a double tap on the brake pedal when the traffic light turned green and the car stalled out. The safety of myself and my children in the car with me has been put at risk since each time it happed we were stopped at a red light at a major intersection on busy major roads. Cars were coming up fast behind us and could have rear ended either myself or the cars behind me (when there were cars behind) pushing them into my car and injuring all drivers and passengers involved. Today, I took the van into the dealership where I bought it for their service department to investigate. The VIN on the van is not covered under TSB 23-027 but I did not ask them yet whether is is covered underJuly 31, 2025 nationwide dealer bulletin ("Request for Visit: 2023–2025 Odyssey/Passport/Ridgeline Auto Idle Stop No Restart") which explicitly covers 2023–2025 Odyssey with no VIN-range cutoff, based on manufacture date after 11/2022. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure each time.
2025 Honda Odyssey with 21.5k miles on it. Pulled up to a stoplight after a 3 hour drive. Auto stop turned the van off. When the light turned green the van failed to restart. Put the vehicle in park, turned it off, waited a few seconds and attempted to re-start it. Van restarted but very sluggish, like the battery was dead. Pulled in and parked. Van started normal the rest of the day. Took it to the dealer 2 days later. They noted the battery was a little low but no codes and no explanation for why it failed to restart. They checked alternator and starter and claim they are both good.
2025 Honda Odyssey with 21.5k miles. Noticed the van shaking when braking. Took it to the dealer for warranty service and they claim that warped rotors were the issue. Declined to provide warranty service claiming brakes are only covered for 12 months. Rotors should not be warped after 20k miles, especially when never used under heavy load.
UNKNOWN, while driving when I was waiting at the signal (waiting for green signal to move) my vehicle automatically shifting from direct to park gear.Once shift to park then no other gears/buttons do not work, only I can turn off the vehicle and restart then all gears/buttons work to move on. This safety issue happened three times (6/25/2026, 7/13/2026 & 8/10/2026) on the road. I took my vehicle on 7/14/2026 to the dealer and they said they didn't find any issue after keeping the vehicle for six days with them. If this issue happens while a vehicle is moving on the road it is going to be a big disaster. After the 08second incident I reported to the Honda manufacturer too.
RE investigation EA25004. We have had two instances of the van failing to restart after it shut off automatically at a red light. This caused a dangerous traffic situation where the van would not start up while traffic was approaching. The battery is in good condition and the van has just over 10,000 miles on it.
Vehicles turns off when the brake is pressed and does not turn back on. The van has to be put into park and the start button has to be hit 2-3 times before it will restart. This has happened 3 distinctive times where it was difficult to restart. We try to disable the start/stop system each time we drive. It has left us stranded at traffic lights for up to 20 seconds trying to restart the van, impeding traffic at high speed interchanges. The van does eventually restart but each time it feels like it’s getting more difficult. This problem first appeared about 1 year after purchasing the van with about 23k miles on it and now has 26k miles. There are warnings that display because the vehicle is still in drive when it shuts off and it needs to be placed back into park to restart it. It occurs the most during a long drive on the highway. It can be very jerky when it restarts, perhaps slamming into gear. It is available for inspection and I plan to go to the Honda dealership soon for a scheduled oil change. I have not been there since the 18k mile oil change.
After driving for awhile, stopped in a store for a minute and came out and my van barely started. Made my next stop a minute down the road, and when I came out the car wouldnt turn over. Let it sit for a minute and still heard the start click once and nothing. Let it sit for 10 15 mins then tried to start it and it worked. Had battery and alternator tested at Auto Parts store and both ok. After reading some forums and researching, I see that it is an overdraw from the auto start feature. I also saw the model of starters on my year of van were only used one year, so it seems like its a problem Honda has known about. Im seeing a lot of these issues, and the guy at the auto parts store even knows about it, so it is something that needs a recall. Clearly these starters are a problem. My van just rolled over 36k miles because we drive a lot so its not under warranty still.
When the idle system kicks in, for example, if the vehicle has stopped at a red light, randomly the vehicle will die. Then it will have to be restarted. It has a faulty starter and there’s an issue with the idle system when the vehicle dies at a red light, it creates a safety issue because they are vehicle vehicles coming up behind me and my vehicle is dead and will not move until I turned the vehicle completely off and restart it. It does not happen all the time, but it has happened here and there since I got the vehicle new and now it happens more frequently. They say it will require a new starter motor assembly to repair.
In approximately October 2025, while stopped at a traffic light, my 2025 Honda Odyssey's auto idle-stop system shut the engine off as designed. When I released the brake, the engine failed to restart. The vehicle remained disabled in active traffic for about one minute. After several attempts and shifting into Park, it finally restarted. There were no warning lamps or messages beforehand. This put me and others at risk because the vehicle was unexpectedly immobilized at an intersection and could have been struck from behind. An authorized Honda dealer diagnosed the starter as causing a slow/no-start condition and replaced it under warranty on October 9, 2025, at 21,211 miles (repair order #192362). The problem has recurred. I began noticing hesitant or slow restarts and normally disable auto idle-stop because I am afraid the vehicle may again fail to restart. On August 4, 2026, at 40,990 miles, the same Honda dealer diagnosed the starter as needing replacement again (repair order #203412). The battery passed its reserve-capacity test. The dealer documented a 0.600-volt ground-side drop, a 0.275-volt positive-side drop, and onboard voltage falling to approximately 7 volts during restart. Honda TechLine directed the dealer to replace the starter (TechLine case #5009355). The vehicle and current starter are available for inspection. The original starter was retained or disposed of by the dealer after the first repair. American Honda case #16533911 is open. No police or insurance representatives inspected the vehicle.
My brand new vehicle continues to leave me stranded at stop lights because of the auto start stop system. Even though I have already taken it up to the dealership before and had it repaired. (There is a class action started over this)
Idle stop system failed at red light. Rather than restarting when light turned green, car turned off and required being turned off and back on in order to restart.
The Auto idle stop feature fails to restart the car during a stop. This happens intermittently but requires one to fully put the car in park and restart the car. This issue has caused concerns as I was at a stop light with a long line and did not know how to recover until I tried to full shutdown, set the car to park, and restart.
The brakes on the 2025 Honda Odyssey has a defect. The safety issue is with the brakes making a loud high pitched squealing noise can be a warning something is not safe or working correctly. Yes the problem has been reproduced and recorded on video for the dealership. They said it is from wear and tear but the brakes have more than 7mm left of life. The dealership says it’s normal for the brakes to squeal. It’s became a safety issue because I can not decipher if or when my brakes are or will become unsafe. The Honda mechanic even mentioned that my new cars brakes should not be making that noise. The brakes have been squealing since before 10,000 miles and squeal when I’m going lower speeds.
Incident Description: The vehicle entered an Auto Idle Stop event at a traffic light and stalled completely instead of restarting when the brake pedal was released. The red battery warning light illuminated, and the vehicle had to be shifted into Park and the ignition key cycled multiple times to eventually achieve a slow, sluggish crank and engine restart in active traffic. Another vehicle was almost going to hit me from behind since red light turned to green when this happened, and that driver from far behind was thinking that my vehicle will start moving and did not slow down. That driver started honking and yelling. It was scary since I had 3 small kids in my vehicle. Dealership Diagnostics: I dropped off the vehicle at a local Honda Dealership to get this checked. From the invoice/service document, I see this note: Cause: Took several attempts but was able to duplicate concern of when vehicle goes into auto start stop it will not always restart, will have to cycle key. Noticed when it did restart it is slow to crank. Battery tested good, and had good reserve voltage. Used tech line as a resource and found this issue is caused by starter not having enough voltage to properly engage auto stop start. rec replacing starter. Correction: Replaced starter.
When the vehicle comes to an idle stop and brake is released, the vehicle shuts off and does not kick back on. Only solution in the moment to get the engine to restart is trying to start the car repeatedly until it comes back on. Vehicle has been looked at for this issue but they were unable to replicate the issue. Engine light will sometimes come on when this occurs. Other times the charging system light comes on, as well having multiple warning lights coming on at once. Causes a safety issue when it’s not restarting while in traffic. Issues started a few months after purchase. Took it into the dealer and they determined the throttle body needed to be replaced.
This is for 2025 Honda Odyssey. The component/system that appears to have failed or malfunctioned is the automatic engine stop-start system and/or related vehicle power/drive-control system. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. When stopped at a traffic light or in traffic, the automatic stop-start feature does not restart or re-engage properly, and on several occasions the vehicle became completely disabled and would not move when the accelerator pedal was pressed. During these events, there was flickering/interruption of power, and I had to turn on the hazard lights, shift to Park, turn off the air conditioning, and attempt to power or restart the vehicle before it would move again. My safety and the safety of my passengers were put at risk because the vehicle was unexpectedly immobilized in active traffic. In one incident, the vehicle behind us almost struck my Odyssey because traffic had begun moving after the light turned green, but my vehicle remained stopped. This has also occurred while stopped on the freeway, including in a construction zone, creating a risk of rear-end collision and leaving my family, including children, vulnerable in traffic while other drivers were honking and attempting to move around us. The problem has occurred at least three times, but it has not yet been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. The vehicle/component has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others. Prior to or during the failure, the main symptoms were the stop-start system not restarting the vehicle correctly, flickering power, and the vehicle failing to move despite pressing the gas pedal. The symptoms first appeared during stopped-traffic situations, such as at red lights or during traffic stops on the freeway.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to restart after being turned off. The Auto START/STOP system failed to operate as needed. The contact stated that the battery was in good working order, but the starter was not operating as designed. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled while at a traffic light. The vehicle was restarted after another attempt with several unknown warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was associated with NHTSA Action Number: EA25004 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 16,000.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving from a complete stop, the Auto START/STOP system failed to restart the vehicle while depressing the accelerator pedal. The vehicle was manually restarted. No warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the battery was fully charged and tested, and the contact was informed that the battery was in good working condition; however, the contact requested that the battery be replaced. The contact expressed concerns that the battery replacement might fail to resolve the issue. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: EA25004 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000.
I have experienced numerous instances where my car will stall at a stop light and then fail to restart, even with switching gears to park before resuming to drive.. I have had to turn on and off the engine multiple times at a si hole stoplight before the car would resume movement. This scenario has now happened at least 3 times. I am a mom driving a minivan of kids and this is concerning for our safety. These are not long stop lights. Sometimes even at a stop light I feel a strange pulling sensation.
While driving my 2025 Honda Odyssey, the Auto Idle Stop system shut off the engine at a stop as designed, but the engine failed to restart when I released the brake pedal. This left the vehicle stalled at an intersection. No warning lights appeared. This has occurred 6 times. Dealer was contacted; service is scheduled
Right side middle row seat belt does not detect when the seat belt is connected and beeps constantly on and off. Started happening right after the manufacturers warranty ended (36k miles).
Starting problem. The vehicle sometimes (randomly) refuses to start after shutting off. For example, after filling gas, or turning off (idle off) at a stop light. It just refuses to start. Terrifying. Researched on the Internet and found thousands of complaints about this going back years. This needs a recall.
The AIS system does not start back up at a light. Sometimes throws itself into park. Last week it started up, but everything shut down about 75 after the traffic light. The entire car loss all power. In the middle of traffic. Needed a policeman to wave cars around e in the middle of the street. Took to the dealership; they kept it for two days and could not recreate the situation. The car had the same problem with start up two days later after leaving the dealership
Several times, The Odyssey won’t restart after the Auto Idle Stop kicks in at a stoplight.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the engine auto start-stop system failed to restart the vehicle while at a complete stop, requiring the driver to manually restart the vehicle after several attempts. The message "Shift to Park to Start Vehicle" was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a loose battery cable and the battery was replaced; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not further repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that a case manager would follow up. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000.
The van is experiencing the auto stop-start defect causing major safety issues for my family. The car stalls randomly at stop signs and stoplights and is unable to be restarted quickly, creating a major traffic and safety hazard. The car often will not turn on at start up. The dealer stated that it needed a new starter. Then said that Honda would not replace the starter until a tech looked at it. Then after several weeks still had not moved forward getting a tech. Then said to bring the van in for them to keep until they could get a tech, and offered a small car without room for the kids as a loaner for the indefinite amount of time they want to keep the van. There were no warning lights when it has happened. This issue is already being investigate by the NHTSA - Investigation Number EA25004. This is a known issue for Honda and I am unable to get a safe vehicle or get my vehicle fixed. Below, i have to choose a date for the incident, but this is ongoing and has happened on more dates that I can possibly log. It happens weekly, if not daily.
The engine fails to restart on its own from a complete stop at traffic light, following the release the brake pedal (Auto Start - Stop). The vehicle will turn off in Drive while idling at the traffic intersection stopped for traffic light. This is a safety concern, that the safety sensor allowing for the vehicle to turn off while vehicle is in drive, could this also happen while driving.
Ever since taking delivery of my vehicle, we notice a strong machinery/oily smell lingering on ourselves (clothes/hair) and our children’s car seats and strollers that are in the vehicle when it is warm outside and the ac is being used. Additionally, since taking delivery of the vehicle, I started experiencing health issues which worsened in the warmer weather when we were using the AC more. The biggest symptom is severe skin rashes which we realized are in the areas that the air vents blow on me/where they hit the steering wheel and I touch the steering wheel. In order to manage my symptoms I needed to start biologic injectables and even with them the rash was still lingering. I was documenting the rash for my doctors and we recently realized that my symptoms align with owning the van. I believe vapors are entering the cabin through the HVAC system in the car. The smell that lingers on us/our things is specific only to this vehicle, and we did not experience it with my previous vehicle, which was a 2023 odyssey touring, or my husbands 2024 Honda prologue, or the loaners that the dealer has had us in that are also all Hondas. The vehicle has been with the dealer in the service department currently for about 55 consecutive days as they continue to look into the issue. Eventually during this period they agreed to replace the evaporator core—Honda did not approve it through the warranty, but the service manager was at a loss on what else it could be causing it. At this point the repair is still not complete and I am unsure if that is truly the solve. I truly believe this is a defect of the vehicle causing vapors to enter the cabin and cause my health issues because in this time of not being in the van for an extended amount of time my skin issues have cleared up fully, even without the use of biologics. I also wanted to note I never had these skin issues before having this vehicle, they started 2 weeks after purchase and resolved within weeks of being out of it.
When on a stop either stoplight or stopsign the vehicle will completely shutoff. I will need to manually start the car
I was driving on a road around 30 mph when the engine cut off and shifted itself into park. No warning, no power, no movement. Car was dead in the road and I was unable to move it to the curb. I tried to press the drive button. Nothing. i pressed the starter button. Nothing. Parkway Honda said they could find nothing wrong other than replacing the battery. Car is brand new. Bought used at 6,000 miles and have only driven it 4,000 additional miles in roughly one year. Very dangerous defect for which they have no explanation.
Internal starter failure.
The transmission slips and misses constantly, ive taken it to the dealership repeatedly they say they feel it then they dont, its getting progressively worse
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that on four occasions while stopped at an intersection with the engine idling, the idle stop feature activated, and the vehicle unexpectedly shut off. The mechanic was able to restart the vehicle. There were other drivers behind the vehicle who started honking their horns. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer to be diagnosed. The dealer inspected the vehicle and determined that the battery and starter needed to be repaired. The battery was replaced. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 22,000.
When the van is turned off it does not want to start easily again. This has now happened approximatly 5 times. I had the battery checked at O'reilly's and the battery was fine but the starter was not.
Idle stop and restart problem: After stopping , the engine shut off and won't be able to restart. Happened multiple times even after the Honda services department re-programmed it.
Auto idle system shuts down and stalled vehicle on intersections twice. Had battery replaced. Continued. Replaced starter (around 15,000 miles) Now at 34,000 miles it is starting to do it all over again. Stalled at intersection, battery sluggish. I turn off the auto idle system as soon as I start the car, but cannot remember to do so every time. Extreme safety issue where I live in major stop and go traffic with multiple children in my vehicle at all times. They are currently checking battery and starter again. No codes ever came on to indicate issues. Vehicle just stopped when auto idle engaged.
The vehicles auto start/stop system has failed to restart the vehicle at stop lights multiple times, requiring a full system reset. At least 2 of those times it has failed and would not restart with a the button press reset.
This is at lesat the second time that our Odessey has failed to restart at an interesction following the start-stop system turning off the engine the when stopped at a red light. After a couple of moments of trying to restart, it started again.
My 2025 Honda Oddessy with only about 31,000 has stalled in the last 2-3 months about 5 times at stop signs/stop lights. It throws itself in park and doesn't recognize that I'm pushing any buttons. On the dash it only says "press the brake" which I am doing. I called Victory City Honda in Michigan City, IN [XXX]) and arranged a diagnostics check on XXX. They said it wasn't throwing codes and didn't replicate when they test drove the vehicle. If I turn off the auto start/stop it doesn't seem to happen but if I forget to push this button each and every drive - it stalls and won't start for up to 10 minutes. Once we were parking at home and it would not allow us to shut the vehicle off. Upon research I found NHTSA investigation ID#XXX with the exact problem I am experiencing. I called my Honda dealor to report and they stated they are not able to do any software updates without a Honda recall. I have another appointment with them on XXX to check the battery and possibly the brake pedal sensor. Please help. With idle start/stop enabled, there have been multiple occasions where the system has not restarted, causing my wife to almost get into an accident with my two young daughters in the car. Honda has looked at it on two occasions and claims there is no issue. However when researching this online, it has let me to find a NHTSA investigation, as well as hundreds of complaints about this are found online.
While the vehicle’s idle stop feature was engaged at a stop light, I took my foot off the brake to start moving again, but instead of starting again, the engine hard stopped and the van turned off completely. It told me to push the brake and start button to start it again but it took trying that several times and eventually holding the brake and start button down before it actually turned back on. Meanwhile, drivers stuck behind me were becoming increasingly irate and people were trying to get around me, despite heavy traffic. This is the second time it’s happened to me in this car. The first was about a month ago.
The two most recent incidents occurred on XXX. During one incident, we were stopped at a red light on a road with a 55-mph speed limit. The vehicle shut off and did not restart normally when traffic began moving. We were left immobilized in an active traffic lane while vehicles approached and passed us at approximately 55 mph. We had difficulty getting the vehicle restarted and moving again. This presents a serious rear-end collision risk because approaching drivers expect traffic to move when the light changes. Four children regularly ride in this vehicle, and we do not believe it is safe to continue driving. We contacted the Honda dealership again after the battery replacement failed to correct the problem. We were told that unless technicians could duplicate the issue, there was nothing further they could do. Because the failure is intermittent, we cannot predict when it will occur, but it has happened approximately 10 times and has continued after Honda’s attempted repair. We also opened a case with American Honda Motor Co., Inc. Honda case number: XXX VIN: [XXX] Vehicle: 2025 Honda Odyssey Approximate mileage at most recent incident: 15000 We are reporting this because the vehicle can unexpectedly leave our family stranded in an active traffic lane and unable to move out of the path of approaching traffic. Our 2025 Honda Odyssey has repeatedly shut off or failed to restart while stopped. This has occurred approximately 10 times. The vehicle was previously taken to an authorized Honda dealership for this issue. The dealership diagnosed the battery as the cause and replaced it, but the same problem continued afterward. The two most recent incidents occurred on 7/21. During one incident, we were stopped at a red light on a road with a 55-mph speed limit. The vehicle shut off and did not restart normally when traffic began moving. We were left immobilized in an active traffic lane while vehicles approached and passed us at approximately 55 mph. After AIS engaged, the engine wouldn’t come back on. This has been at intersections, etc where it was dangerous to have no engine. It is ridiculous that the feature has not been removed after problems going back to the 2018 model. All to game an emission standard. Shameful.
2025 Honda Odyssey with approximately 22,000 miles. On multiple occasions while stopped at traffic lights or stop signs, the vehicle's Auto Idle Stop feature shut the engine off normally. When I attempted to accelerate, the engine failed to restart, leaving the vehicle disabled in the travel lane. The battery warning light illuminated, and on one earlier occurrence I believe a "Shift to Park" message may also have appeared. I was able to restart the vehicle by pressing the Start button, shifting back into Drive, and continuing normally. The most recent incident occurred while stopped at a traffic light. When the light turned green and I pressed the accelerator, the vehicle did not restart or move. I had to manually restart the engine while stopped in the intersection before I could proceed. This created a safety concern because the vehicle unexpectedly became disabled in active traffic. The vehicle has never exhibited difficulty starting during normal operation, either when cold or warm. The problem has only occurred after the Auto Idle Stop system shut the engine off at a stop. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by a Honda dealer, but an appointment will be scheduled.
2025 Honda Odyssey. When the auto start/stop engaged, the engine failed to turn back on when the brake was released. It left my family stranded at a stoplight for multiple minutes before my wife could get it going again. After going rounds with the dealership and Honda not being able to 'recreate the problem', they finally put in a new starter and the van worked for the next year. Fast forward one year later and it did the same thing. Now the dealership cannot recreate it again, and I am concerned for the safety of my wife and kids. Brand new vehicle should not do this and Honda is not doing anything to rectify the situation. I have read there are over 2 million complaints on this issue on this website but don't understand how a recall has not been implemented.
auto idle stop/start system malfunctions intermittently. The car will shut off at a red light/stop sign then will not automatically restart. Will require shifting to park and restarting the car at the intersection.
UN KNOWN
Vehicle failed to start occasionally, which could be a hazard with the auto start/stop feature. Issue was confirmed with dealer and corrected under warranty. Starter was replaced.
I was stopped a stop light and the auto start/stop engaged. When I let go of the brakes when the light turned green, the engine did not restart and an ERROR message came on the dashboard. The Parking Brake light on the dashboard came on too.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal and stopping at a traffic light, the gear shifter independently shifted to park(P). The vehicle was turned off and restarted, and the vehicle then operated as intended. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed; however, the diagnostic result was unknown. The vehicle was not repaired. The insurance company had not been contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case. The failure mileage was 26,000.
Waiting at traffic light to turn left onto Dixie Hwy from Kyles Lane in Ft. Wright, KY. After taking foot off brake, car went into park by itself. Unable to put into drive or put on hazard lights. After calling 911, turned car off, then it restarted. Cars behind were honking. Thankfully an accident did not occur. Will take to Honda dealer on July 20, 2026 to check it out
When stopped at a red light today, our minivan's Auto Idle Stop (AIS) system stopped the engine with the brakes depressed (as advertised). Once the light turned green, the driver released the brake to re-engage the motor, but the starter did no restart the minivan and a battery light flashed on. The start button had to be pressed several (~4) times to get the motor to restart and to turn the battery light off.
The vehicle experiences dangerous, unexpected engine stalling immediately following an Auto Idle Stop event. Upon coming to a complete stop at intersections, the engine shuts off as designed, but fails to automatically restart when the brake pedal is released. The vehicle completely locks up, leaving my family stranded in live traffic and requiring a manual reset of the ignition, which takes time to restart several minutes or longer. The local Honda dealership states they cannot duplicate the intermittent issue, posing a severe ongoing safety hazard. Honda has a ticket open for the year of my Honda but has yet to approve or make a fix. It's happened several times first notice it back on XXX and Honda dealer could not duplicate the issue so they did nothing. It has happened several additional times before now but this last time it happened XXX we were on a highway at night and it almost caused us to be rear-ended. The first times it happened back in XXX I sent them a photo of the dashboard light up when it was stalled, but they said they couldn't duplicate the issue and did not fix anything. This was all done through First Texas Honda in [XXX], which is where the vehicle is at now. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
This has been addressed by the dealer once before and the starter was replaced, however the problem is happening again. The auto start/idle feature will not start the car back up while stopped on occasion. For instance, yesterday while stopped at a red light the auto idle/start feature kicked in, as expected. When releasing the brake to drive when the light turned green the car beeped and would not start again. We had to power the whole van down at a busy intersection and restart. Thankfully it started. We didn’t catch what warning lights flashed when the van beeped, but no warning lights were present before the issue. As mentioned, this has happened before to the point the dealership replaced the starter. But unfortunately, it is happening again. The van often has a rough start as well when using it, but not every time.
My vehicle has experienced repeated unexpected engine shutdown/no-start events, creating a significant safety hazard. The engine has unexpectedly shut off or failed to restart while stopped in traffic and while entering traffic, resulting in a sudden loss of propulsion. On one occasion, the vehicle would not restart for approximately one minute. The vehicle was inspected by an authorized Honda dealership, and the starter was replaced under warranty in July 2025. The repair did not correct the problem. Since that repair, the same failure has occurred multiple additional times. The issue has now occurred at least six times over approximately one year. Because the condition is intermittent, the dealership has not permanently identified the root cause. The vehicle is currently being returned to the dealership for further diagnosis, and I have requested that the matter be escalated to Honda Technical Assistance (Tech Line) and Honda Engineering. This defect creates a serious safety concern because the vehicle can unexpectedly lose power while in or entering traffic, increasing the risk of a collision. There were no consistent warning lights or messages before the failures, and the condition occurs intermittently without warning. The vehicle remains available for inspection.
I bought a brandnew vehicle 1/31/2025 and it was a White Honda Odyssey 2025. I was in search of a bigger and safer car for my family of 5. Within months I had major issues with the vehicle. I would bring my car in and it would get returned unfixed. My vehicle has now gone in for a 6th time (twice in a week) for service for shutting off while the vehicle was IN MOTION (on the highway , busy rotary and roads) I have spent hours and hours and hours speaking to people and James Brown at Parkway Honda. I have been lied to about how much my vehicle was driven and tested with them not knowing I had tracked the mileage on there at dropoff and checked at pickup. I feel very small in this situation as Parkway Honda keeps brushing me off and not fully getting that a vehicle shutting off while in motion on a highway or in a busy rotary is wildly unsafe. My kids and I have been SOO lucky that this has not been fatal. Honda keeps saying it's the battery, etc. My car was in there for over 3 weeks last Summer for this issue and has been in and out multiple times and it was brand new. This is criminal on their part and they know they are bigger than I am and im sick of it.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while stopped at a red light, the message "Severe Damage Alert" was displayed on the instrument panel. The accelerator pedal was depressed and the auto idle stop feature engaged, and the vehicle stalled. The failure had occurred on several occasions. A dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
WHILE STOPPED AT TRAFFIC LIGHT, ais cuts off engine but stall engine, won’t stray immediately. Have to cutoff engine and restart. Takes several tries to restart. Has happened several times over the last 6 months.
The idle restart does not always restart the car following an automatic idle engine shutdown. The result is that the car is stalled at an intersection or other areas where the brake is applied, the engine shuts off, but the car is still in drive. Only fix found is to shut off the car systems and hit the ignition to get the car started again.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey intermittently fails to restart after the Auto Idle Stop system shuts the engine off at traffic lights or stop signs. When I release the brake to proceed, the engine does not restart as it should. Instead, the instrument cluster displays messages such as “Shift to Park to Restart” and/or “Press Brake to Start.” At that point, the vehicle is immobilized in traffic and I must shift into Park and manually restart the vehicle using the Start/Stop button before I can continue driving. The problem occurs intermittently, making it difficult for the dealer to reproduce. It appears to happen more frequently when the air conditioning is running, although it has also occurred under other conditions. This creates a significant safety hazard because the vehicle can become stranded in the middle of an intersection or at a traffic light, exposing occupants to the risk of being struck by other vehicles. I took the vehicle to a Honda dealer, but because the condition could not be reproduced during the visit, no repairs were made. The issue continues to occur. I am reporting this because the failure of the Auto Idle Stop system to restart the engine presents a serious safety concern and appears consistent with reports from other Honda owners.
There is an idle function on the engine that shuts the engine off when at rest, the engine has failed to restart and the car dies in the middle of the street, without warning, as if the battery is dead. The handful of times this has happened the car has been able to start back up within two or three tries. Honda acknowledges the issue as far as I know. The dealership let me know this is a known issue. It is unacceptable that there is no fix to this problem.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while attempting to accelerate from a complete stop occasionally, the vehicle hesitated while the accelerator pedal was depressed. No warning lights illuminated. In addition, the contact stated that while Eco mode was activated, the failure occurred more consistently, causing the air conditioning to fail to power on in hot climates. The contact stated that the failure became persistent. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, who diagnosed that excessive heat caused a starter seal failure, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 16,598.
The vehicle suffers from an intermittent electrical/charging and starting system failure tied to the Auto Idle-Stop feature. While driving and coming to a stop at active traffic lights, the engine stutters and completely shuts down. It then fails to automatically restart, requiring multiple manual attempts to crank the engine back over. This creates a severe safety hazard, leaving my family suddenly stranded and vulnerable to being rear-ended in live traffic. The vehicle also intermittently struggles or takes multiple attempts to start after being parked in lots. The issue has been brought to two separate authorized Honda dealerships within a 30-day window. The first dealership diagnosed a failed battery and replaced it under warranty, but the stalling recurred. The second dealership held the vehicle for five days for diagnostic testing but stated they could not replicate the defect, returning it with no repairs made. Immediately upon picking the vehicle up from the second dealer, it suffered another starting failure in a parking lot. No warning lamps or error messages appeared on the dashboard prior to these failures. The components are intact on the vehicle and available for inspection upon request.
Stopped in heavy traffic in a four lane highway. Auto start/stop shut the engine down as expected. Traffic ahead cleared. I took my foot off of the brake to step on the gas. The engine didn't start up, and the radio and all lights inside went blank. Traffic behind me approached at about 45 mph. and were swerving around to avoid hitting my dead vehicle from the rear. I pushed the start button. Nothing. Again. Nothing. Several times more with my foot on the brake, or off the brake. Nothing. I put it in park and kept trying the start button. Finally it started, the radio and dash display came on, and from then on it operated as usual. Scared the hell out of us. There was no warning that anything in the car was malfunctioning before this happened. Took it to the dealer. They looked it over, kept it overnight. Told me the next day that the battery can get drained too much if the air/cond is on max and the start/stop feature doesn't like that. They used a machine to drain the battery and recharge it and they tell me now that it should be good. I don't believe one has to be aware not to use the air on max while the start/stop is enabled. I'm afraid to drive the car now! Our lives were in danger.
When stopped at a stop light, the car went into idle stop. Upon taking my foot off the brake to accelerate, the car stalled and required me to push the brake and ignition button to shut it off completely and then restart the car. This has happened on 8 separate occasions. It seems to happen more frequently when we have the AC on on a hot day. It's scary to be at a light with cars waiting to go around you sometimes in the middle of a busy road and your car just stops. I feel anxious when driving on the highway that the car will just stop, though I think that is unlikely given how this happens. We have gotten into the habit of turning off the automatic idle stop feature when we drive and that gets around it, but you have to shut this off every time you start the car, so we forget sometimes. No warning lights before the failures occur nor after. We are going to visit the dealership, but this is a known issue that is already under investigation and so I am just adding our report to the pile of others as additional evidence.
1st concern- while in an intersection the van powered off after lights on dashboard said something about a system failure. I tried restarting vehicle several times as I was really nervous being in an intersection and it finally started after a few tries. This same thing happened l, to my husband, while parked in our garage about to leave. 2 nd concern- last week on XXXI drove to [XXX] for a short vacation and while at a stop the dashboard had multiple warnings going off 1) electrical power steering system problem 2) Hill start assist problem. Vehicle may roll upon brake release 3) adaptive cruise control problem 4);power steering system problem. I called Roadside assistance and we waited about an hour and a half. He used a tester and said all was coming back fine but to take van to a dealer the next day. We took it to Egg Harbor Honda dealership and they said if the codes have cleared, which they had, then there is nothing they can do and to just take it to our dealer when we return home. I have an appointment for tomorrow at XXX at 915 am at [XXX] of Honda in Abington, PA. I have pictures of all the "2nd concern" warnings. During the 1st concern I was driving and did not feel comfortable capturing the warning lights with my phone camera. When I am stopped at a red light, the auto shutoff is activated, and when I lift off the brake and try to accelerate forward at the green light, the vehicle stalls for about 15 seconds, leaving the driver and passengers vulnerable to a car accident. One of the passenger seatbelts triggers the "no seatbelt" alarm, even when the passenger is buckled. If no one is seated there, there is no alarm. This only happens when someone is seated there. In order to bypass the alarm sound, the passenger has to unbuckle and re-buckle so that the car knows that the passenger is seated. Once the car shifts after a turn or curved road, the alarm will sound again. During an average 20 minute car ride, it'll probably do this 5-6 times, depending on how many turns or curves there are on the route.
We purchased a brand new 2025 Honda Odyyssey in Nov. 2024. Within a couple months of owning our new vehicle we began having issues with the Auto Idle Stop system. The vehicle will not turn back on at random when stopped at any time when driving. This is a huge safety risk as this has often happened while stopped at a light. It’s also happened when in the drive through. Essentially any time stopped to then go from the brake to the gas. There are times I can get the vehicle restarted quickly and other times it just won’t turn back on for about 30 seconds. The battery light flashes at times when this happens, but not consistently every time. The screen also shuts off and all power to vehicle until I get it restarted. I have had moments where I thought someone was going to rear end me. This issue occurred three or more times prior to our vehicle being outside the warranty and prior to the mileage being outside the warranty. The dealership has since given us an issue now that we are outside the warranty saying that any repairs now fall on us even though this is a recurring issue. They “attempted several repairs” to which none have fixed the problem. We have spent more time in a rental vehicle and switching back and forth to different vehicles waiting for the vehicle to repaired then any family should deal with a brand new vehicle. We are a family of 7 and in no way have time to be completely jerked around and in a manner that the dealership is now trying to wash their hands of. They essentially promised a resolve till we got outside of our warranty window and now it’s no longer their responsibility. We feel completely strung along as now they informed us we don’t qualify for lemon law even though we absolutely did. We were also informed by Janelle the service manager that our vehicle isn’t made for short trips. We have videos of the vehicle having these moments and we have everything documented through text with the manager and service manager of Honda Checkered Flag.
Power loss when idle; it fails to restart normally, and then the car stalls for several minutes. It happens frequently despite the van being less than 2 years old (at least 3x weekly)
Engine Idle Stop shuts off engine at stops but completely fails to restart when the brake is released. The vehicle stalls in traffic and requires a manual restart. This has happened four times from a stop, and once while driving on the highway.
Auto idle stop feature causes vehicle to shut off completely at red lights and stop signs. This is very dangerous as cars can be coming up behind us in stop and go traffic. Has happened multiple times since we purchased new vehicle in Feb 2025. Vehicle has been serviced by Honda dealership but problem persists.
The malfunction involves the Auto Idle Stop / Auto Start-Stop restart system on my 2025 Honda Odyssey, including related battery, charging, starter, starter relay, brake switch, and Power Distribution Module components. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The vehicle has shut off while stopped in traffic, usually at a red light, and failed to restart normally. This has happened four separate times. This puts my safety and the safety of others at risk because the vehicle can become disabled in an active traffic lane or intersection, creating a rear-end collision hazard and blocking traffic. I took the vehicle to Hill Country Honda in San Antonio, Texas. I told the dealership the vehicle had stopped and failed to restart normally multiple times, and I provided video and pictures to the service advisor. The dealership stated the battery had run down because of the Auto Idle Stop system and charged the battery for approximately two hours. I was also told that if it happens again, the procedure may be to charge the battery again before moving forward with further diagnosis or repair. As far as I know, the dealer has not reproduced the failure while in possession of the vehicle. However, they were made aware of the repeated failures and reviewed the video/pictures I provided. I do not know whether American Honda has inspected the vehicle. It has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives. Warning messages appeared during the failure, including “System problem detected. Shift to Park” and “To continue to drive, depress brake pedal and push switch.” These appeared when the Auto Idle Stop system had shut the engine off and the vehicle did not restart normally. I had no clear warning before the first incident.
Once the vehicle's auto idle stop system engaged at a traffic light, and the engine failed to restart automatically leaving us stranded in active traffic. We usually disable the system but forgot that time. It has also required multiple manual push-button attempts to start from a parked position at home and in public parking lots. The vehicle was brought to an authorized Honda dealership for this issue. The dealer stated they could not replicate the symptom, diagnosed it as a low battery, and charged the battery. The issue persists. Failing to restart at a traffic light creates an immediate rear-end collision hazard and leaves occupants vulnerable in the middle of active intersections.
On multiple occasions, after the engine auto start/stop has turned the engine off at a stop, the engine fails to restart. This leaves the car stalled in the roadway. This has led to multiple unsafe situations as traffic flow is disrupted must divert around the stalled car in the middle of the roadway. There have been no other warning signs or symptoms leading up to this issue. The vehicle has not yet been inspected, a inspection at a Honda service center is scheduled for next week
Mother single , sole support 4 babies and going through divorce needed a vehicle right away . Carvana rated this car 94 after its 150 pt inspection . It was noted that it was in an accident. Driving the babies on interstate the Pilar flew off, later on still on interstate , ck engine light came on, then steering warning, brake warning and sudden loss of speed . Car would not accelerate beyond 40 miles per hour . Day 32 car was taken to Honda where she found she could not open the hood. Car was then sent to Gerber A very quick look found upper tie bar was “buckled” the dipstick bent and radiator “floating” also impact bar was missing or bent … read Gerber report for clarification , told with hood misaligned and latch bent way back hood could possibly fly up and no front end protection in a collision. I am horrified and begging for emergency swap… they are claiming cosmetic … BUCKLED upper tie bar?? They are waiting on a more detailed report gambling with 5 lives or more ! I loaned this child7000 to help lower payments . I wanted her to have a safe vehicle to drive. This is undrivable yet she cannot afford rental.. why are they waiting for detailed when we know it was wrecked January 13 2026 and obviously NOT a 94 and safety inspection 150 was clearly fraud I would never have let her and those babies buy a wrecked piece of junk! I am scared EVERYTIME she gets behind the wheel. The amount of time is taking away from her new job. She is sole support please help emergency swap now
My 2025 Honda Odyssey has experienced the same problem 4 times when stopped at a light. The engine shuts off when stopped at a light but then fails to restart and instead the vehicle automatically shifts to park and stalls; the battery light illuminates and the whole vehicle has to be shut off before the vehicle will restart and be able to shift into drive. It appears this is a problem with the "Auto Idle Stop feature." It happened twice a few weeks apart and then happened twice during the same 30-minute drive. The vehicle also jumps/jerks forward occasionally when my foot is removed from the break at a stop sign or light in a way that doesn't seem normal.
While the start stop feature is active, there have been several times where the van will not restart at a stoplight. In some cases, I have had to turn off the A/C, or other electrical systems to allow the car to restart. This has happened in traffic and caused several backups while I tried to restart the car. Took this van to the dealer and while they checked the systems they did not find any issued. As we progress through summer and into fall/winter, I do not want to have to worry about this in poor weather.
The vehicle has an Auto Idle Stop no-restart/stalling issue. While stopped at a traffic light/intersection, Auto Idle Stop engaged. When attempting to proceed, the vehicle did not resume driving normally, shifted itself into Park, dashboard warning lights flashed, and the only way to move again was to turn the vehicle completely off and restart it. This left the vehicle disabled in traffic and created a serious rear-end collision/intersection hazard. The issue was confirmed by a Honda dealer on 06/26/2026 at approximately 11,804 miles. The repair order states that code P07AF was stored and that a snapshot showed a drop in cranking voltage due to a failing starter. The dealer advised that the starter must be replaced, but stated the starter is on severe backorder. The vehicle remains unrepaired. Honda customer service case #16464445. The vehicle is a low-mileage 2025 Honda Odyssey purchased new in April 2025 and used as a family vehicle to transport children. Prior Honda service records show maintenance was performed at approximately 9,800 miles, including a multi-point inspection, and the battery terminals/cables/mountings and battery condition were checked OK at that time. This appears related to NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA25004, “No Restart After Auto Start/Stop Engages,” involving 2018–2025 Honda Odyssey vehicles. The failed starter/vehicle is available for inspection upon request.
I was waiting at a stop light. The idle system kicked and the vehicle turned off, as expected. Upon lifting my foot off the brake, the vehicle failed to start and the car went into park. I was unable to restart the car after holding the brake pedal down and pressing the start button multiple times. After many failed attempts, I shut off the power to the vehicle, waited a min or so and restarted the vehicle. I then put the car in drive and continued thru the intersection. This was in a busy intersection and could have easily caused an accident, but thankfully it did not. This is the 3 time this has occurred with this vehicle.
I have been in my vehicle at a red light and my van will not start. The start button is pressed and the vehicle makes clicking noises or won’t make a sound at all. Finally it starts
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while at a stop with the Auto BRAKE HOLD engaged, the vehicle stalled. The contact activated the hazard lights. The contact restarted the vehicle, and the vehicle resumed normal operation. There were no warning lights illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 14,600.
2025 Odyssey with 19k miles; Starter failure; After running/ driving vehicle continuously for 45 minutes in 80(f) degree weather, stopped and turned off vehicle completely. Tried restarting after 5 minutes, engine turned over twice, but did not start, and auxiliary features stayed on as if vehicle was running. Attempted again, heard click, as if engine attempted to turn, but no start. Checked engine visually, noticed engine bay was hot, but fluid levels all were within recommended ranges based on container-marked levels. After turning vehicle off, waiting 10 minutes and using battery jumper, engine started and stayed running. This is concerning as the vehicle features an auto-start feature that can turn off my vehicle in traffic, and leave me stranded at an intersection or worse if the starter fails.
Vehicle on numerous occasions has had a complete electrical failure during an auto stop that has caused the engine to turn off and needed manual reboot several times for the car to restart.
With the auto start engaged, the car has stalled several times in the middle of intersections with my family in the car. Over the course of 12 months, this has happened 5-6 times. In each case, we have to shut the car off and try to frantically turn it back on. Sometimes this takes a few tries to get it to start. It’s frustrating that there is no option to permanently turn off the auto start feature. However, within the past 2 months, there have been 3 times that the car won’t start right away from an off position. It takes a few tries to get the engine started. The van is less than a year and a half old and only has 18,000 miles on it. This shouldn’t be happening, particularly in the middle of an intersection if I forget to turn the auto start off. Honda has not replied to my inquiries and the dealership can’t/won’t do anything about it because they can’t replicate this issue.
The vehicle stalled at a traffic light and would not go into park or shut down to restart for about a minute. There were no warning signs or warning lights. It is a safety issue due to this potentially happening in the middle of an intersection while waiting to turn. The vehicle is being taken to the dealership on Wednesday, July 1st.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey has experienced an intermittent failure of the Auto Idle Stop system on four separate occasions. While stopped at a traffic light, the Auto Idle Stop system shuts the engine off as designed. When I release the brake pedal to proceed after the light turns green, the engine fails to restart automatically. Instead, the dashboard lights illuminate and flash, and the vehicle displays the message "Press brake and START button." Pressing the START button once does not restart the engine. I have had to repeatedly press or hold the START button before the vehicle eventually restarts. During these events, the vehicle is completely disabled in active traffic and cannot be driven until it restarts. This has occurred four times, including while stopped at busy multi-lane intersections. The vehicle remained stationary after the traffic signal turned green while surrounding traffic expected it to move. This created a safety hazard because the vehicle unexpectedly became immobilized in an active traffic lane. I took the vehicle to an authorized Honda dealership. The service advisor acknowledged they are aware of similar complaints from other 2025 Odyssey owners but indicated Honda has not provided a definitive repair or service procedure. A diagnostic appointment has been scheduled. I have also found numerous reports from other 2025 Honda Odyssey owners describing the same Auto Idle Stop failure. In many of those cases, dealerships ultimately replaced the starter under warranty after diagnosis. The consistency of these reports suggests this may not be an isolated incident. I am submitting this complaint because this is a safety issue. A vehicle that unexpectedly cannot move when traffic begins to flow creates a risk of a rear-end or other collision.
while stopped at a redlight the auto idle stop engaged and engine shut off. When releasing the brake to accelerate the engine failed to restart and completely stalled in traffic requiring a manual restart. warning lights flashed on the dashboard. Then the same thing happend when stopped at a stopped sign.
When I came to a stop at a traffic light, the car shut off as expected. However, when I took my foot off the brake the car did not start up. I had to manually start the car. This happened 3 times earlier so I had the car in to Curtis Ryan Honda for service one week prior and they claimed the battery was defective and put a new one in. However, even after the new battery, it did it again yesterday. Each time it happens, the cars behind me get anxious and start beeping. I am afraid that I may be rear ended at some point if this keeps happening. I dropped the car off at the dealer again for them to take another look at it.
The auto start and stop feature failed on numerous occasions. So when I am in the middle of a road stopped waiting for a car to turn my van will autostop but then it fails to restart. This has caused me on numerous occasion to be stalled out in the middle of busy roads and intersections. I almost was involved in an accident that was a near miss luckily. I have young children and I fear for their safety in our van as this issue can cause a serious accident if not corrected.
When I come to a full stop and the Idle Stop feature engages, sometimes the engine will not restart. I get a message saying to press the button to start the engine, but it does not start after doing that either, so I have to shut the car off and restart it. There are a bunch of lights that flash when this happens.
My vehicle has failed to restart at intersections when the idle start stop feature is engaged. Have to put car in park and manually shut off car and restart the car to get it to restart. Get an error code for a little while about brake issue.
Van has repeatedly stalled during the idle stop restart process when stopped at a stoplight. The van will stall and the dashboard lights up with many symbols. To briefly include, a red exclamation, check engine and battery symbol among others. The car has to be completely shut down and restarted to turn over and function. Obviously an unexpected stalled vehicle in traffic is a significant and potentially injurious or deadly problem. This has been happening periodically since Jan 2026 on a 1 year old van with approximately 12k miles. I have asked the dealer to investigate and they claim no error codes and the battery is ok. I suspect either a starter, brake pedal issues, or software update is needed. I would encourage the NHTSA to issue a recall or service bulletin as a quick google search reveals this is a common issue on newer Odyssey vans. This vehicle is available for inspection upon request.
Our 2025 Honda Odyssey has now experienced three failures for the same defect, including two starter replacements within two weeks, without resolution. The most recent repair, overseen by Honda Tech Line, happened after the vehicle died June 2 while in traffic and it had to be towed to the local dealership using our insurance. On June 15 the vehicle died again, just five days after I picked it up with assurance that this issue was resolved, and it is was towed back to the dealership by Honda Towing. The repeated part swaps, without root‑cause diagnosis, clearly have not resolved the issue and have left us with a one‑year‑old vehicle that is unreliable and unsafe to operate. My minivan has failed in the middle lane of a major road while idling at a stoplight twice and in a parking lot once. All incidents were within 15 minutes of driving and 5 miles from my home. This is a critical safety defect and the repeated failures place this vehicle within the criteria that may qualify under Kentucky’s lemon law. We have not made that claim yet, but we are formally documenting the repair history and escalation. ———- -Starter failed and was replaced twice. This could have something to do with the auto start/idle system. -our one year old van is unsafe and unreliable. It died near a major intersection while idling at a stop light. I was in the middle lane and it wouldn’t restart for 5 minutes. I was very afraid my children and I would be rear ended. -the dealership has confirmed the problem, but they not been able to recreate the scenario despite it happening on 3 separate occasions. -Honda Tech Line has been directing the local dealer what to do after the first starter replacement failed. I filed a claim with American Honda. -no warning lights/lamps prior to failures
The van has intermittent warm-start slow cranking and occasional Auto Idle Stop restart failures. The van fails to start intermittently during auto idle stops. This puts the driver and passengers at risk by failing to drive right away. It causes a potential collision from the rear. It has not been reproducible by the dealer and was inspected by the dealer. No warnings were present prior to failure. This started happening about 2-3 months ago.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey fails to restart after the Auto Idle Stop (AIS) system engages at a complete stop at traffic lights and intersections. When I release the brake, the engine does not restart as designed. I am forced to shift into Park and manually restart the vehicle using the ignition button. This has occurred multiple times and is intermittent. I am aware of NHTSA engineering analysis EA25004 covering this exact issue on 2018-2025 Honda Odysseys. Honda TSBs A23-008 and A23-010 have not yet been applied to my vehicle. This defect creates a safety hazard as the vehicle is unable to proceed through an intersection when traffic clears. Additionally, after driving for 20+ minutes, if I stop the vehicle and then try to restart within 5-10 minutes, the restart is very slow, almost sounding like the battery is not strong enough to turn over. I have to turn off the vehicle and then press start a couple of times to get it to work. If i then proceed for another 5 or so minutes, turn it off for just a couple of minutes and restart, it is dead with no sound on the initial restart atempt and I need to try a couple of times. You ask for a date below. This has been recurring since purchased the car in September of 2024
While in traffic, the van goes into idle and then will not restart. This has happened to us at least 5 times. The frequency has increased and now occurs at least once a week. We are very much worried about how unsafe this is because we could be hit from any direction while in active traffic. We noticed NHTSA investigation (ID# PE25-03) is already underway and feel that the issues apply to our situation. We need immediate help please.
When the engine shuts off while braking at a light/stop sign etc occasionally the car will fail to turn the engine back on and the car will go in to park and the only way to get in to drive is to restart the car. This happens once or twice a month.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey Elite repeatedly shuts off completely while stopped, with the Auto Idle Stop feature engaged, and fails to restart on its own. The engine dies at a complete stop and will not restart until I shift the vehicle into Park and manually restart it. This has happened more than six times. It occurs only at complete stops such as traffic lights and stop signs. No warning light illuminates. This creates a safety hazard because the vehicle is dead and immovable in active traffic until I can restart it, exposing me and my passengers to rear-end collision risk. This matches the known Auto Idle Stop defect already under federal investigation for this vehicle.
Auto Idle Stop feature has caused the vehicle to stall / shut down at a stop light on several occasions causing hazard when we can't drive. Entire engine has to be stopped and restarted which is scary in heavy traffic.
-Defective Starter. -Starter randomly fails to restart vehicle after being warmed up. -When the DC motor internal copper windings get heat soaked after being driven and warmed up, the motor's internal resistance gets too high to draw sufficient current to turn over engine properly. This happens when intentionally shutting off motor (ie. getting gas, going into a store then coming out in a few minutes), the engine either will not crank at all, or cranks about two engine revolutions, will not start and then stops trying and remains in full accessory mode. It will not attempt a restart either. The only remedy is to fully shut down the vehicle, then try a fresh start after a few seconds. Sometimes it will start the engine, sometimes it will repeat the issue and you have to try again. This is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS when this problem occurs when the vehicle is at an intersection or traffic light, shuts itself off due to the auto-start/stop, then fails to restart the engine when expected when the light turns green. Especially at traffic lights if you're the first car in line., and especially if you're the first car to go with traffic behind and in a single lane of traffic. Having to totally shut the car down, then do a fresh restart while blocking an intersection with tons of cars behind and all waiting on your car to decide if it wants to re-start with cars flying around you into the shoulder or ditch to get around is an extremely dangerous position to be in, forcing other drivers into doing ridiculous things to get around you and WILL if not already cause major accidents. I believe Honda knows this is an issue. They are blaming bad batteries and alternators which can easily be ruled out with independent battery and alternator testing in the vehicle, while the problem of no/slow cranking remains. The problem IS defective starters, that have or will absolutely cause accidents by stranding vehicles in intersections because of failures to restart.
When at a stop, the van is supposed to start again. There have been at least 4 times now that it did not automatically restart. After the 3rd time, I was at the dealer for routine maintenance and mentioned it. He said if it does it again to let them know and they will need a full day to look at it. The most recent time I was at a major intersection in town at a red light. Light turned green and the van would not go. My adult son was with me and said it took about 30 seconds for me to get the van going again. It is scary because I live in a busy town. The service advisor said he has the same van and ALWAYS turns the idle stop to off when he drives. I try to remember to do it, but sometimes I forget. I am calling the dealer now but really don't want time without a vehicle.
After approximately 60 miles of highway driving, I was stopped at a stop light and the auto engine off feature automatically shut the engine off. When I lifted my foot from the brake pedal in attempt to accelerate forward, the van did not turn back on and a battery warning light showed on the dash. I attempted to restart the van without success x 2, it was not turning over. My van was stalled in the middle of the road, cars passed around on both sides. Upon my third attempt to restart the van, it did restart and I have had no further issues since. Though, I have been shutting off the auto engine off feature since that time. I understand there is a well known issue with the auto engine off feature of Honda Odysseys in this generation. I am respectfully advocating for a formal recall as a stalled van in the middle of traffic poses significant risk to the public.
This was an auto stop-start system failure. The Honda dealership in Frisco inspected and attributed this to battery life but did not guarantee this was the cause of the issue. There were no other signs of failure prior to the incident. A description of the incident is below. While turning right departing a parking lot, the vehicle auto stop-start enabled during the brief stop and the feature turned off the vehicle. When accelerator was pushed to proceed, the car started flashing lights with a warning message on the dashboard, the car was then automatically put into park by the system, and would not proceed to move without turning the vehicle off and back on. If this had occurred in another location, it would have been extremely dangerous as it took some time to turn the vehicle back on.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving off the expressway and stopping at a red light, the contact pressed the ECON button, and the vehicle failed to start. The contact opened the driver’s side door and press the start button to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was restarted and operated normally. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on two separate occasions. The cause of the failures were not yet determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure, and a service appointment was scheduled. The manufacturer was not yet notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 8,000.
While driving straight on the highway on a sunny day the car left the lane on it's own, resisted attempts to get it back into the lane, and crashed into the concrete barrier after we swerved around and the car bounced around. Lane keeping assistance and automatic cruise control were active. The lane lines looked perfectly fine. A couple minutes before the accident the car left the lane unexpectedly but we were able to get back into it. Before going on the trip we took the car to the dealer and complained about issues with the car not starting after it shut off while idle at stop lights, or not starting properly, like engaging the parking brake and getting stuck, or starting and rocketing forward even when I only pressed lightly on the gas, leading to loss of traction. They checked the car and said everything looks fine and the tires have 5mm of tread and don't need to be replaced, and they rotated the tires and changed the engine oil. I'm not sure if the issue was with the power steering failing, or traction being lost, or the sensors having an issue causing the car to think the lane was somewhere else and not letting us leave where it thought the lane was. Driver has tons of bruises still and it's been over a week. The other 4 passengers seem ok. The insurance company said the car is totaled and is taking possession of the car. The only warnings lights or messages the car gave us before the accident were about the car having an issue starting back up when all the cars were beeping behind us when the light turned green, and messages about loss of traction, mainly after the engine started back up.
Engine fails to restart after the Auto Idle System shuts it down, leaving vehicle stranded in traffic. The issue is sudden and unpredictable, and may not appear in inspection. A stalled car in live traffic is a safety concern. The vehicle is at a dealer for diagnosis and repair. No warning appeared before the problem began happening. (About 5 times in 2.5 months.) Sometimes when it occurs, a brief error message seems to appear on the dash, but quickly disappears. It usually takes cycling through restarting the car to get going again. Not a good environment to stop and take video, although it's almost impossible to record.
Engine will fail to start when shut off to stop light or when shut off at anytime when engine is hot. Very dangerous situation. Acts like starter is dragging. There is a clunking in the steering column when making a turn mainly to the left that can be felt in the steering wheel. Driver seat is splitting open on the side. Keeps setting code p0441 for evap system..
I am reporting a critical safety issue regarding the auto-start-stop system on my 2025 Honda Odyssey. On June 15, 2026, the vehicle's engine shut off at an intersection as designed but failed to restart, stranding the driver in active traffic and presenting a severe safety hazard. I previously brought the vehicle to an authorized Honda dealership approximately two weeks prior to this incident after noticing early symptoms of this failure. At that time, the dealership diagnosed the issue as low battery voltage and replaced the battery; however, this repair did not resolve the underlying fault. The vehicle continues to unexpectedly stall during traffic stops due to the auto-start-stop failure, representing an ongoing and significant danger to the vehicle occupants and other motorists.
while running in expressway, van lost it's power and went to parking mode while driving x 3, have to turn on and off the engine in order to restart in the middle of expressway. this put myself, 2 toddlers, and other family member in the car to get hit by the vehicle that is with us especially in the express way, and could have resulted to death at worst. Luckily able to take to the dealer and they said that the battery was dead and not holding any charge at all, this happened 6/10/26, we bought the car 4/2025 brand new, and currently have 8500miles on it. Dealer replaced the battery the same day. there was no warnings on the dashboard that was telling us that the battery was getting low or having any issue. this incident could have killed us in an instant with no warning at all. this is very dangerous.
2025 Honda Odyssey has completely shut down at a traffic light and stop signs. This has now happened multiple times. When waiting at a red light the car fails to restart the car when I take my foot off the brake and I get a message “to continue to drive depress brake pedal and push switch” . The red battery light comes on and the car puts it self in park. The car fails to turn on or turn all the way off. The car is stuck in park in the middle of traffic.
Vehicle shuts off with with the start/stop feature. then will not restart the motor after taking foot off the brake causing a dead vehicle in the road with no warning. Then its a scramble to get it to restart and its difficult to start. this happens at random and seems like honda refuses to fix.
This event has happened multiple times in various situations. While sitting at a red light the auto idle stop feature was engaged and the engine turned off as normal. Upon lifting my foot off the brake, the car fails to restart leaving me stranded in the middle of the intersection. This caused an unsafe situation as I was unable to restart the vehicle until after a few tries, leaving cars having to navigate around me in busy intersections. I have also had situations where I was unable to start the car while in park. It would start after the second try. This car was purchased in Fall 2024 and started showing this issue less than 1 year after purchase. Given the age of the vehicle, it should not have battery or starter issues this early on in the lifecycle of the vehicle. Looking online, other 2025 Honda odyssey drivers have posted similar issues. At first I thought it was just a fluke, but lately I have been having more frequent occurrences. A recall must be issued on the battery/starter to prevent future accident that is just waiting to happen. Being stranded in an intersection is incredibly unsafe.
Electrical restart feature failures, battery dash indicator comes on and the restart feature won’t engage. This has happened on several occasions on busy roads with lights vehicle won’t move without manually turning off vehicle and putting into park to restart. Was almost rear ended by large truck after being unable to restart vehicle after being stopped at a red light.
While having the idle-stop system in use our van had shut off three times at a red light when we took our foot off the brake to press the accelerator. This left us at an intersection with a dead engine. Not knowing what was going on it took us a few moments to get the van turned back on and into drive. I had the van in for routine service and asked them to look at it with no issued found. It will go in again next week for additional checks. The only warning light is the battery icon comes on. Battery was checked at the dealer with no issues found.
2025 Honda Odyssey Auto Idle Stop fails to restart engine after automatic shutdown at intersections; vehicle must be restarted manually; safety hazard; repeated occurances; video documentation made. Reference: NHTSA EA25004
Bad starter. When utilizing auto start/stop, the engine would fail to restart at stop. The car would need to be shifted back to park, turned all the way off, and then back on to restart, resulting in a delay - an unsafe practice at an intersection.
Sitting at a stop light. The car stopped the engine with the auto start stop system. When I released my foot off the brake. The engine didn’t start back up. I had to put it in park. Press the start button multiple times and it finally barely started. This was in traffic right while the light turned green.
Had the starter & battery replaced November 2025. It’s now June 2026 and it still is having trouble starting. It will sometimes not start and then just make a clicking noise and all the lights in the dash come on and air, but engine won’t well start. Then you take foot off break, then turn it off and try again it will start. The dealership ran tests and said everything was fine. When we first had this problem the car would stall out and shut off in traffic.
Vehicle has auto start/stop and when shutting down at a stop will fail to start back up. Have to shut vehicle down completely and then try to start back up.
-Engine fails to restart on its own from a complete stop at a traffic light or road intersection with the AIS function engaged. -This issue presents a significant safety hazard for my two small children and me. On multiple occasions, we have been unable to move due to severe traffic congestion, leaving us vulnerable to aggressive and hostile behavior from other drivers. The resulting situation is both stressful and unsafe, particularly when traveling with young children. -Issue has happened several times -No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure -Reported the issue to the dealership as the vehicle is still under warranty. Per service technician, there is not alarms or issues with the vehicle. Nothing is being done by Honda to address this issue. Please help
Auto Idle Stop system engages (turning the engine off in highway traffic and at a red light or stop sign), the engine occasionally fails to restart on its own. I have to put in park and restart. Almost causing accident started when van had 25k now I have 46k on the odometer and Honda said no longer covered.
Engine start/stop feature is not working properly and it nearly caused a few accidents. I am getting rid of this car and going to purchase a Toyota Sienna. Android Auto doesn't work either which is a known issue as well and it is a basic safety feature to keep driver's attention on the road and not on their phones.
The vehicle’s auto stop-start randomly does not start the engine when releasing the brake. The vehicle is temporarily disabled on the roadway and it puts itself into Park. The vehicle requires intervention to restart the engine and the delay takes several seconds and poses a safety risk by blocking the roadway.
While the van is at a complete stop at the intersection it shuts off and behaves as if it needs to be restarted. A message appears instructing me to press the brake and push the start button to start the van. I took it to Honda, but they were unable to find the issue. They replaced the battery to see if that would fix the problem, but about a month later, it happened again.
Idle Stop issue- We were at a stop light and the engine idle stopped. When the light turned green and the foot was taken off the brake, the engine did not turn back on. We had to turn hazards on and turn van completely off. We tried several times to restart the vehicle and the engine did not respond. We finally got it to turn on a couple minutes later but the engine sounded as if it was struggling to turn on.
On three separate occasions — May 17, May 20, and May 29, 2026 — the vehicle's Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) / Collision Mitigation Braking System activated without cause while traveling at highway speed (one of these occasions was on an interstate). On each occasion, no vehicles, pedestrians, or obstructions were present ahead of or around the vehicle. The road was clear. The activation produced a large bright yellow dash notification and the vehicle's brakes activated. Minor children were passengers in the vehicle during these events. The vehicle has an active Florida Lemon Law case with multiple prior documented electrical nonconformities. When I attempted to schedule yet another service appointment to have THIS defect diagnosed, the dealer, who sold me the vehicle, refused to service the vehicle due to the pending lemon law status and directed me to contact Honda Corporate. When I asked the dealer to provide their refusal and the requirement for Corporate authorization in writing, they declined to do so. Honda Corporate has not responded in over 72 hours. Photo and video evidence of other nonconformities is available.
Auto Idle Stop (AIS) system fail to restart: The engine fails to restart on its own after a complete stop at a traffic light or intersection with the Auto Start/Stop function engaged, putting the driver in dangerous and panic situation.
Noise coming from front driver side suspension or steering column/components. The noise is very light, but sounds like a clunking/rattle and can be felt through the steering wheel. It is intermittent. Because I am unsure what is actually causing the noise, I cannot state whether it is actually part of the suspension system or steering column area. The dealership cannot replicate the noise, so it has been turned away twice now. Does not feel safe. Searching other odyssey forums, it is something that is reproduced by others who have bought a 2025-2026 Honda odyssey.
The Auto Idle Stop has failed to restart the car when stopped at a traffic light. This has happened twice now, and has caused me to become a road hazard as I am not able to get the car turned back on before the light turns green. This has happened twice in the past month (May 7 2026 and June 1 2026). Have not yet taken the car back to the dealer. No warning lights or anything came on prior to the incident. Just stopped at a light and the engine stopped, then did not turn back on when the brake pedal was lifted.
Car completely turns off when I’m stopped and idle stop has engaged. Seems to happen when the AC is running hard. Sometimes, the car turns back on by itself in seconds. Other times, I have to turn the car back on myself by pressing the “engine on” button, and I struggle to get the car to turn back on. Very dangerous to be obstructing traffic at busy intersections or on a busy highway when stopped while another car ahead is making a turn. I’m scared to drive this car with my children in it. It is a minivan! I understand this is a known issue under investigation by NHTSA, but I’m struggling to get my local Honda dealer to acknowledge and address it. This issue happens at least 1x a day when I’m running the AC.
While stopped at a red light the engine turned off with the engine restart function. When I released the brake the engine attempted to start and then completely stalled. I had to get the vehicle in park and restart the engine with took it a few attempts of pressing the start button. The has happened a few times with this vehicle. Dealers have been unable to replicate the issue to try to solve the problem.
The Honda Auto Idle Stop Start isn't working properly. I applied brake and car turned off, when I released the brake the vehicle did not start. Also vehicle seems hesitant to start at times.
Engine fails to restart on its own from a complete stop at a traffic light or road intersection when the Auto Idle Stop function is engaged
The starter is failing and with automatic dial shut off it caused an issue while in middle of intersection waiting to turn. The car would not start and had issues. Took it into the dealership Wyatt Johnson in Clarksville, TN they said they could get it to show an 8volt which is a reduction and shows that it is failing, but said Honda would not replace until it fails in the dealership. This is a safety concern an [XXX] iles [XXX] rning of more electrical issues that a safety concern the sensors go off all the time in the rain and sometimes when in reverse in an empty parking lot. The doors do not always lock like they should and these are all electrical issues. Honda refuses to replace even though it shows signs of failure! The Auto Idle Stop (AIS) system malfunctions during normal driving. When coming to a stop, the AIS shuts off the engine as designed, but the vehicle then fails to restart when the brake is released. The vehicle shifts itself into Park automatically without driver input, either before or at the same time as a dashboard message appears instructing the driver to depress the brake pedal and press the start button. When the start button is pressed, the dash resets but the engine does not start. The only way to recover is to fully power the vehicle off and restart it, which is difficult and unsafe at a busy intersection or red light. This puts the driver and others at serious risk. The vehicle becomes immobilized in traffic with no ability to move it out of the path of oncoming or following vehicles, creating a risk of being rear-ended. The unexpected automatic shift into Park is also a vehicle control concern, as the driver does not initiate it. The problem is intermittent. The vehicle has been taken to an authorized dealer twice. On the first visit the dealer kept the vehicle several days with a loaner and attempted to replicate the issue but could not. On the second visit the dealer kept the vehicle one day and again could not reproduce it. A third diagnostic visit is scheduled, during which the service manager intends to drive the vehicle to attempt replication. As of now the failure has not been confirmed or reproduced by the dealer. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. No warning lamps appear prior to the failure. The only symptom is the automatic shift into Park and the dashboard message to depress the brake and restart, which appear at the moment of the malfunction. The first occurrence was at approximately 25,000 miles. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives.
The vehicle turned off at a red light and would not start up again.
The idle stop on my 2025 Odyssey sometimes does not turn back on when it turns off at a red light. I have to then completely turn off my vehicle and turn it back on in order for the vehicle to work again. Also, when first turning on my car sometimes It’s very laggy in fully starting. This is a great safety concern, especially when at a red light or at a stop sign when trying to apply gas and it doesn’t turn back on. This is a problem we’ve heard is being experienced by 2025 Odysseys. The dealership we took it to could not replicate the problem they said the battery was totally fine.
AIS system causes the 2025 Honda Odyssey Elite to stop and fail to restart when stopped at traffic light intersections—the car will not restart which is very scary in traffic with kids in the car. I had starter replaced at a Honda dealership, but the dealer could not say whether it was same part or upgraded part, which means the starter may overheat and shut down again because Auto Idle Stop. This began happening when car was less than one year old.
Stopped at light. Car turned off per the start/ stop feature. Removed foot from brake and pressed gas pedal, car started but brake light came on and continued to flash. Had to pull over and stop before light would stop flashing and go away.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed, however the auto idle did not function as intended. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed battery. The contact was informed that the battery needed to be replaced. The failure reoccurred. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle stalled, and the engine shut off. The contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. The contact stated that after several attempts, the vehicle started. In addition, the contact stated that when the auto idle feature was disabled, the failure did not occur. The vehicle was scheduled for diagnostic testing within the next few days. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 100.
Vehicle has stopped running multiple times while at stop signs or traffic lights when engine is at idle and not running. The vehicle has to be restarted to go after shutting off while in traffic. It is very concerning when this happens in live traffic. The dealer has had the vehicle for days and were not able to replicate what happened. Asked me for more information on what was being used when it happened. They say they ran tests and were unable to get any codes to show what might have happened. The only thing I have seen was reports that the idle stop feature was unavailable previously. Not sure when that happened? This has happened at least 6 different times, last time being May 8th 2026.
CMBS error again now having lane assist error
I have encountered several instances where the vehicle goes idle at a spot light as expected. However the vehicle fails to restart when letting off the brake. Instead, the vehicle shifts into park. Once the vehicle shifts into park, I am unable to shift into drive. I must restart the vehicle and try en shift into drive. This is extremely dangerous and has happened multiple times. This vehicle is one year old and has 9k miles.
The screen goes black, doesn't turn on, or it stalls out and will not let you do anything and has a hard time connecting to phones at all
I have a 2025 honda odyssey, I bought mine with 2 miles on it, it was rhe first vehicle ive owned that was new so we had something safe and reliable and this has been far from it. So far we have had 1.The USB port not working in the center console 2.Battery was draining and it was struggling to start, died at lights and barely turned back on 3. Door sensor on passenger side kept saying it was open when it wasnt 4. Air barely working 5. Wind sound whipping through the driver side 6. Raining in to the vehicle on the passenger side 7. Back passenger door wont shut it just keeps popping back open 12. Doors dont lock when you walk away 13. Passenger doors will unlock but driver side doesn't 14. The passenger door got stuck and we had to crawl through and push it open 15. The idle stop system frequently fails to restart the car after shutting down the engine at a stop light. In some cases the car is difficult to restart using the starter button. In other instances the car restarts and then dangerously lurches forward.
We've been experiencing issues with the Auto Idle Stop feature (the auto restart in particular). On multiple occasions, the vehicle will automatically turn off the engine while stopped in traffic, but will fail to start back up, requiring the driverto manually turn the vehicle off and back on via push button starter (sometimes multiple restarts is necessary to get it moving again). This seems VERY similar to the investigation referenced under - EA25004.
Auto start stop not working. This is happening quite a lot where there auto stop in activated and then the car wont start back. Resulting in the car having to be completely restarted.
Engine would not restart after the idle stop at a traffic light. I needed to put the car in park and turn the engine off and restart it. Shortly after this, at another traffic light, the idle stop caused a delayed restart of the engine and caused the vehicle to lurch forward suddenly. This has happened once before as well.
Back passenger side window broke while driving with no evident cause. Speed was between 25 and 35 mph, no other vehicles were present nearby, and no pedestrians were in the area.
While waiting at a red light with foot on the brake, the auto idle stop system shuts off the engine but fails to restart it when the foot is lifted off the brake, causing stalling. The vehicle has to be put in park and turned off completely and restarted before it will drive. This has happened twice, once on 5/1/26 and today on 5/7/26.
I was driving on the street about 15 miles per hour when the car sensor sensed something in front of my car and stopped automatically when there was nothing in front of me. Almost caused a rear-end accident, luckily, the car behind was able to stop
The vehicle's Auto Idle Stop system shuts off the engine at stop lights and other low-speed stops and, on multiple occasions, fails to restart, and the AIS disable button is sticking. We disable AIS every single time we drive the vehicle, and on multiple occasions the button has re-engaged itself mid-drive, meaning the safety hazard cannot reliably be avoided even with the workaround Honda recommends.
The car intermittently struggles to restart or dies and will not restart after stopping at a stoplight or stop sign due to the auto stop start. Even when the engine restarts after a stop, of often sounds like it’s struggling. The car has been taken into the dealership multiple times and the battery has been replaced twice. Honda dealer claims there’s no known issue despite numerous complaints online and report of a federal investigation into this issue with many Honda Odysseys and specifically the 2025 model year.
There is suspension noise coming from driver side when driving in low speed (10-30mph). You can feel it when turning and accelerating slowly. It started around 9000 miles after first service of the car. There was no noticeable noise before. Reported to dealer but they cannot fix it and told me everything looks normal.
When I am stopped at an intersection, my 2025 Honda Odyssey will often automatically stop the engine as part of its auto idle feature. However, three times in the last month, my car has stalled when it's time to start the engine. One time was on a highway when I was stopped at a light, and cars started honking and driving around me (including on the shoulder). Only after I turn the car off and turn it back on, can I start driving again.
The Auto Idle Stop feature caused the engine to shut down twice, both times at a stoplight
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently shut off in the middle of the road. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was immediately restarted and driven to the residence. Additionally, while at a complete stop at a red traffic light, the engine Auto START/STOP system failed to restart the vehicle after releasing the brake pedal. The contact pressed the Push to Start button to manually restart the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on several occasions. The manufacturer and the local dealer were notified of the failure. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The failure mileage was 18,266.
While idling, the engine shuts off completely and requires the vehicle to be shifted into park and restarted before operation can continue. On multiple occasions, the engine has struggled to restart and cranked for several seconds before turning over. Honda of Tomball in Tomball, TX currently has it. This defect creates a significant safety hazard because the vehicle loses power unexpectedly while in traffic. The vehicle is immobilized until it can be shifted into Park and restarted, leaving us vulnerable to collisions or other accidents, particularly in busy intersections or congested roadways, and creates a serious safety risk to our family, children, and our daughter’s service dog. The vehicle has been presented to HOT multiple times for diagnosis and repair. This defect continues to happen. HOT has inspected this during multiple repair visits. To our knowledge, the manufacturer has not directly inspected the vehicle. (I have requested it with both Honda of Tomball and Honda of America.) No warning lamps or dashboard messages appeared prior to the stalling events. The failure occurs without warning while the vehicle is stopped in Drive. The primary symptom is sudden engine shutdown, followed by difficulty restarting in some instances. This issue began shortly after delivery of the vehicle and has continued intermittently. First documented time of problem was September 2025. Most recent is May 2026.

The engine shuts off completely when at a stop after releasing the break pedal. This occurs when the idle auto start is on forcing me to restart the car multiple times with the engine button until it turns on and I am able to continue driving. This is a SAFETY hazard because it happens during traffic and an accident can occur. I have taken it multiple times to the dealer with no replication being able to be done.
The vehicle's auto idle stop system is malfunctioning, resulting in the engine failing to restart from a complete stop. This total failure has occurred on five separate occasions, including while stopped in active traffic intersections. Prior to these total restart failures, the vehicle showed the following symptoms: 1) Initially, the vehicle experienced rough engine idling, abnormal vibrations, and a raw gasoline odor after driving. 2) This progressed to a noticeable delay between releasing the brake pedal and the engine attempting to ignite, during which the starter sometimes sounded strained. 3) This has culminated in the current defect where the engine shuts off normally when stopped at an intersection, but completely fails to immediately restart when the brake is released. This defect completely immobilizes the vehicle in active traffic lanes, exposing us to an immediate and severe risk of a rear-end collision. When the engine fails to restart, the vehicle locks the transmission out of drive and triggers a warning on the dashboard. It is a highly hazardous situation, especially with a lot of distracted drivers on the roadways.
The auto-idle off feature - yes The stall happened in a situation where cars behind me would have expected me to start moving and could have resulted in a rear-end collision. The vehicle has stalled like this three times. The other two times were not in public or traffic situations. It has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center. It has not been inspected by anyone else. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the failure, only after.
I've had several incidents of my car stalling occur since the purchase of the vehicle over the span of 16 months, probably around a dozen times or so. I will stop at a stop light and the vehicle's idle-stop system does not function properly. The vehicle shuts off but does not auto-restart. When I try to manually restart, nothing happens. There have been times where it took several times before the vehicle started back up. Even more seriously, I've stopped in the middle of traffic and the same thing happened. We have had a couple of very scary incidents of cars having to move over a lane to pass our idle vehicle. Thankfully no car hit us due to our idled vehicle. We have owned this vehicle for less than 1.5 years and have had two battery replacements. I've also had the vehicle not start from my garage or parking lot. When I try to start the vehicle a second time, there are times where the start button feels very firm and doesn't push down easily. I have to push the start button several times before the vehicle starts. I'm grateful there have not been any major accidents occur but this is an extremely unsafe situation for the driver and their passengers.
Many, many times vehicle stop/start feature has failed to start car. Have been stranded at busy intersection having to put car in park and restart car. Extremely dangerous. Took car to dealer and they deny there are any problems.
Issue with the idle auto star stop. I was driving on the freeway traffic stoped and I press fully down on the brakes and the turned of in stop and go traffic. Took about 5 minutes press and depress the brake pedal for the system to active again.
Starter failed to resume engine operation when auto start/stop disengaged motor at a stop light. This resulted in the vehicle being briefly inoperable after the light turned green, requiring other motorists to go around and leaving the vehicle stalled until engine functionality was resumed. Issue was reproduced by dealership, starter motor was deemed defective and was replaced under warranty. Vehicle had rough starts when resuming from auto stop for at least a week leading up to this incident.
On multiple occasions our vehicle has turned off at a stop (auto start/stop) and failed to restart upon pressing the accelerator. It then takes several seconds to be able to restart and get moving.
Description: Subject: Formal Warranty Claim – Spontaneous Glass Breakage and Request for Immediate Assistance Serious and unexpected failure involving my vehicle, a 2025 Honda Odyssey Elite (VIN: [XXX] ), currently with approximately 26,000 miles. On April 19, 2026, I submitted an initial complaint to Honda concerning what appears to be a spontaneous breakage of the rear side (fixed quarter) glass. The vehicle was parked overnight in driveway when the glass shattered without any known impact, external force, or evidence of vandalism. The fracture pattern is consistent with spontaneous tempered glass failure originating from the edge, which raises concerns of a potential manufacturing defect or internal stress within the material. On April 20, 2026, I presented the vehicle in person at my local Honda dealership for inspection and assistance. To date, no action has been taken, nor has any resolution been provided. This lack of response is unacceptable given the safety implications. Due to safety concerns, the vehicle is currently not in use and remains parked. I am unwilling to operate the vehicle in its present condition out of concern for further damage or risk. As a result, I am experiencing a significant disruption to my daily activities and mobility. Accordingly, I respectfully request the following: 1. Immediate review and approval of this issue under Honda’s warranty as a case of spontaneous glass breakage. 2. Prompt authorization for repair or replacement of the damaged glass at no cost to me. I have photographic documentation available. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] ?VIN: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Idle start stop system was engaged at stop light. When I released the brake the van engine should have restarted - however the van completely died at this point. I had to wait about 10 seconds and then restart the entire car while sitting at the stop light. Very dangerous - the vehicle has also done this when at a stop light but cut off after I started to make a turn - leaving me in a dead vehicle in traffic's way -
When Idle start/stop function is engaged and then goes to restart, the engine hesitates or fails to restart all together.
I purchased a new 2025 Honda Odyssey XLE in February 2025 and soon noticed a clunking noise coming from the front suspension whenever I hit bumps. I contacted the dealership, and they scheduled an appointment. After inspecting the vehicle, they told me they could not find anything wrong. However, when I left the dealership, the noise was still there. The issue has since gotten worse. The clunking noise can now be heard when starting the engine, during transmission downshifts, and over even small bumps in the road. It feels like something in the suspension is loose, and I believe it is unsafe to drive. I am requesting that the vehicle be bought back. The dealership where I purchased the vehicle is 380 miles away, and I am currently on military orders, which makes it difficult for me to return to that location.
This is the second time I have taken it to the dealership. When sitting at a stop and the automatic stop and start happens, it acts like it does not want to crank back up. Last time the dealership said it was the battery; they replaced the battery, but that has not fixed the issue. if I am at a stoplight and it does not start back, that is not a good feeling my wife now does not want to drive the van anymore because of the seriousness of this issue as well has having young children in the car. This is a van that was bought brand new and has been in the shop more than it has been driven.
When I am stopped at a stop light or in traffic my auto start fails and kills the electric in my vehicle when I push the pedal to go. This has happened several times and in one instance, almost caused me to be rear ended. It took several attempts to restart the car all while other cars are buzzing past me. It is currently at the Honda dealership for the 4th or 5th time for this same issue. My battery was replaced all ready thinking that was the solution, but it was not. I personally know of two other people having this exact issue with their vans.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the idle stop feature turned off. The contact stated that the parking brake unexpectedly engaged, and the vehicle shut off with the message “Idle Stop Not Available” displayed. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. Additionally, shifting the vehicle out of park became difficult, and the contact had to wait an extended period before the vehicle could be restarted. The contact stated the failure would not occur while the idle stop feature was engaged. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer informed the contact that the failure could not be duplicated. The contact was advised to return the vehicle if the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired, and the dealer refused to disengage the idle stop feature. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 23,000.
Multiple times since purchasing the vehicle, the engine fails to restart after the automatic idle stop feature engages at red lights or stop signs. When I release the brake to resume driving, the vehicle attempts to restart but makes a struggling or grinding noise and then stalls completely, similar to a dead battery. The vehicle becomes unresponsive and does not restart immediately. I am forced to turn the car off and attempt to restart it multiple times, often waiting several minutes before the engine turns back on. This has occurred in traffic, creating a safety hazard due to vehicles behind me and my inability to move the car. The issue appears to be related to the automatic idle stop/start system and may involve the starter or battery failing to properly restart the engine.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that after coming to a complete stop, the Auto START/STOP feature engaged, causing the vehicle to idle, the transmission shifted to park(P), and the engine failed to restart independently, and the vehicle turned off unexpectedly. The battery warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was restarted. Additionally, the vehicle made a clanking sound while driving over a bump or while making a turn. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and it was determined that the battery had low voltage, and the contact was advised to deactivate the Auto START/STOP feature. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: EA25004 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000.
Engine Shutoff/Idle Stop Failure: The vehicle fails to restart after the automatic idle stop engages in traffic, requiring a manual restart. Electrical System Malfunctions: car dying at stoplights, loss of power, and, in some cases had to restart in "limp mode" where the vehicle is restricted to 1st gear, not very safe on major highways. Reported this to Honda during service on 3-16-26, they didn’t find anything? Has happened 7 times since it was serviced.
This is the fifth time the auto engine shutoff failed to restart after I stopped my car at a stoplight or traffic. This results in potential rear ended accident as one time it stopped in the middle of traffic on the freeway, another time the car behind me at a right turn light that turned from red to green almost rear ended me. No, I brought the car to Honda dealership and they said no problems. But this auto engine shutoff that failed to restart has occurred fifth times. Vehicle has been inspected by dealer and unable to reproduce because they didn’t drive it and step on the brake and have it stopped in middle of traffic. There was an engine warning light that occurred twice but disappeared after 1-2 days before my scheduled dealership appointment. I mention this to dealer. The failure happens suddenly without warning once I step on brake without turning off the auto engine shutoff which I sometimes forget because it is every single time I turn the engine off the auto shutoff would reset. I called Honda America back in January 2026 when I had this problem. I changed my car battery already and so it is not a car battery issue.
My van seems to struggle when traveling longer than 80 miles. I stopped on a trip at a rest stop and it would not restart. I had to get jumped and I purchased a new battery. I took my van into Honda and both batteries tested fine. No code is being produced though the dealership was able to replicate the issue once. After longer trips while using the air conditioner also have an issue with the auto/stop start not reengaging after being at a stop light. The dealership told me nothing is wrong a battery terminal was loose after they kept it for a week which I do not believe.
The issue involves a malfunction of the auto start/stop system in my 2025 Honda Odyssey, where the engine fails to automatically restart after coming to a stop. The vehicle instead requires a manual push‑button start to regain engine function. The vehicle and all related components are available for inspection upon request. This failure created a significant safety risk, as the vehicle became unexpectedly inoperative in active traffic. Losing propulsion at intersections or stop‑and‑go conditions exposes occupants and surrounding drivers to the risk of a rear‑end collision or being stranded in a hazardous location. The problem has not yet been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center, but it has occurred during normal operation. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or other third parties regarding this specific failure. There were no warning lamps, messages, or prior symptoms before the failure occurred. The issue first appeared without any advance indication.
On 4/4/2026, my child sustained a serious finger injury involving the power sliding door. The child activated the power sliding door using the interior door button. While the door was closing, the child’s hand remained on the front (leading) edge of the sliding door where it meets the door frame (B-pillar). The child’s finger became caught between the closing door and the frame. The power sliding door continued to close completely and latched shut on the child’s finger. At no point did the door stop or auto-reverse, and there was no noticeable slowing, hesitation, or warning indicating obstruction detection. The door operation sounded normal during closing. The child’s finger remained trapped until an adult manually opened the sliding door to release it. The injury involved a finger amputation involving the distal portion of the finger with an open fracture and nail involvement, requiring emergency room treatment. Emergency department records document a diagnosis of fingertip amputation, with radiology findings noting a soft tissue amputation defect and concern for distal phalanx (tuft) fracture of the affected finger. Follow-up evaluation on 04/06/2026 confirmed the severity of the injury and resulted in an urgent same-day referral for orthopedic/hand surgical evaluation.
2025 Honda Odyssey has been stalling due to Auto Idle Stop (AIS) failure to restart at traffic lights or stop signs. Engine fails to restart automatically and car needs to be manually restarted with push-button off/on switch. No apparent fix issued by Honda.
Upon coming to a complete stop, the engine has failed to reengage causing the car to stall in traffic. The car has restarted after being turned off and restarting but with traffic moving all around us and cars behind honking because they think we are failing to go. If we happened to stop in an intersection it could be even more dangerous. This has happened 3 times so far I. The past couple of months. At first I thought we accidentally pressed a wrong button or did something that caused the engine to stall, but upon research and talking to others with Hondas this appears to be a known issue. I am taking the car to the dealership on 4/10/26 to get looked at. There was no warning light or error messages prior to to happening. We bought the car new and it has only 10,000 miles on it.
The Auto Idle Stop system on my 2025 Honda Odyssey fails to restart the engine when the brake pedal is released quickly after a full stop. When this occurs, the vehicle stalls completely in traffic and must be manually restarted by the driver. This has happened multiple times and is reproducible. The failed component is the Auto Idle Stop/engine restart system. The vehicle is available for inspection. My safety and the safety of others has been put at risk multiple times because the vehicle stalled at traffic lights in active traffic, leaving me unable to accelerate through an intersection. The problem has been confirmed by Honda Marysville dealership. The dealer stated they could not repair the issue and advised me to modify my driving behavior as a workaround. No repair was performed. The vehicle has been inspected by the selling dealership. A message appears during the failure telling me to restart the car. The problem first appeared within the first year of ownership on a brand new vehicle with basically zero miles at purchase. The cause appears to be a defect in the Auto Idle Stop restart system that fails under specific braking conditions.
When stopped at a red light, the vehicle’s auto off system turned the engine off. When the light turned green and I removed my foot from the brake, the engine stalled and would not restart. I pushed the start button several times, put the vehicle in park, pushed the start button a few more times, and finally got it to restart. Luckily, this happened leaving my neighborhood and not in a more precarious situation. This has happened approximately 20 times now. I’ve had the vehicle inspected by the dealer. They could not replicate the issue, but acknowledged that Honda knows it is an issue. They aren’t willing to fix it until there is a recall on the vehicles. In the meantime, I have a one year old vehicle that sputters and struggles to restart more often than not. I have had the vehicle stall like this after the auto off system turned the engine off when trying to merge into traffic on the interstate. I had a near miss to an accident at that time because the vehicle stalled and would not restart.
This vehicle comes with idle stop. Many times especially at red light, the idle stop switches off the engine but then it does not restart automatically. We have to switch off the car and then restart it again. This takes some time. In the meantime, it is the panic with cars honking behind us.
I was stopped at a stop light and the idle stop function activated, turning off the engine, as designed. However, when the light turned green and I released the brake, the vehicle stalled out. I had to completely turn off the vehicle and restart it.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey has had trouble turning on since it has been about 9 months old. It doesn't always turn on from being off. It doesn't always turn on when the vehicle is already on and the auto-start-stop system turns the engine off. More often than not it struggles to start but eventually does. I took it in for service and the dealership replaced the battery. It continued to not start. The new battery did not improve the symptoms. I scheduled another appointment for service and the dealership kept lying and gaslighting me into believing that they did something to improve the symptoms. They claimed to have updated the computer system software/firmware versions. I asked which ones were updated and they said that none were, it was all up to date. They claimed to have "reset" the auto-start-stop system. I asked how that would improve performance when the vehicle doesn't start from being off as well. The vehicle is unsafe to drive. It turns off at stop lights, stop signs, in medians when I am trying to make turns. The engine not restarting in parking lots from a complete stop is also very concerning. I hate and fear my Honda and I am scared to drive it. I have taken it to multiple dealerships to get it fixed and none will do anything. I have a video recorded after this occurred at a red light. The video shows the status of the vehicle and attempts to restart it. This was recorded February 19th 2026.
Vehicle failed to restart after Auto Idle Stop engaged while stopped in traffic. The engine shut off as expected but did not restart when releasing the brake pedal. A warning message appeared briefly on the dashboard but could not be fully read due to traffic conditions. The vehicle remained unresponsive until I shifted into Park and manually restarted the engine. This has occurred intermittently. The vehicle was previously evaluated by a dealer for the same issue, and the battery was replaced at approximately 15,000 miles. The problem has continued to occur after battery replacement. This creates a safety concern due to inability to move the vehicle in active traffic.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey has failed multiple times in the middle of the road when coming to a complete stop. Auto idle engages and when I try to press the gas the car malfunctions. I have to turn off the car and turn it back on again for it to start. Also at times the interior of the car will start to smell like gas.
At a stoplight vehicle turned off and gave a battery light and vehicle lost all power and placed vehicle in park. A warning message came up very quickly about something wrong with the auto start/stop system on display. Vehicle remained off until after opening door and pressing engine start stop button multiple times along with depressing and releasing brake pedal multiple times. This occurred the first time in late February 2026 then again on 3/21/26. Vehicle has 46,880 miles currently.
Auto off system malfunctioning at stoplights. Happened 4 times in 10 days. Remove brake to accelerate and van is no longer in drive. Dash says to depressed brake to engage drive. Do this and will not go into drive. Need to turn vehicle off and back on to be able to place van in drive. One time it would not engage in drive and was able to depress brake and get back in drive but dash kept flashing “brake.” Afraid I will get rear ended at a stoplight
I’m experiencing issues with the Auto Idle Stop system. The engine fails to restart on its own after a complete stop. I get an error message and I have to manually restart. This has happed at stoplights and in the middle of an intersection during heavy traffic which is a big safety issue.
After a drive, shut it off, walk back to car within 2 minutes, car wont start. It cranked but failed. Never happen in cold start, but always after a drive. Happen about 8times in 9,000 miles and is more and more frequent now.
the car will shut off at stop lights and randomly not start back up when the light turns green, then it will take a few minutes to start back up using the push button, this ONLY occurs with the automatic start stop feature of the car my wife drives the car with our two young children and being stuck in intersections randomly is not safe for anyone ,. we have told the dealer about the issue and they have failed to duplicate the issue and said nothing is wrong,
After stop at traffic light with air conditioning on, the auto idle stop system engaged. When the brake was released, the engine stalled, able to be restarted after 5-10s. Problem exactly matches NHSTA investigation EA25004.
Auto Idle Stop has malfunctioned several times causing me to get stuck at an intersection with warning lights flashing causing me to manually shift to “park” or shut down entirely to get it to restart. I was in the vehicle with my three kids and the light turned green and I could not move in heavy traffic. We took the vehicle into the Honda for service and they replaced my battery and did a full system check and battery reload test. Since replacing the battery, it has happened three times in 2 months. The remote start will not start when I try to get vehicle to start when outside the vehicle.
When stopped, my 2025 Honda Odyssey often fails to restart after the auto-idle stop engages. The engine stops, and fails to restart, and lights flash on the screen. I have to then turn the car all the way off, and on again, a process that can take upwards of 15 seconds. The issue happens daily. It will happen on the highway. Additionally, the button to disable the auto-idle engine stop is unreliable and sometimes doesnt work
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. While the contact’s wife was stopped at a red light, the Auto START/STOP feature engaged, and the engine failed to automatically turn off as designed. The brake pedal was released, and the vehicle completely shut off. The vehicle was restarted, and the vehicle operated normally. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not yet contacted. The contact was informed of NHTSA Action Number: EA25004 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the investigation. The failure mileage was approximately 23,000.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while stopped at a traffic light, the vehicle unexpectedly shut off. An unknown flashing warning light was illuminated, and the vehicle was manually restarted. This failure occurred frequently. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 30,000.
This vehicle is a 1 year old (2025) Honda Odyssey with roughly 11,000 miles. On two separate occasions now, the auto start-stop feature has caused the engine to die altogether. On both occasions, the vehicle stopped at a red light in a busy intersection, the auto start-stop feature turned off the engine (intentionally), but when the light turned green and my foot came off the brake and onto the gas pedal, the vehicle died entirely. A number of lights and an error message illuminated on the dash board. From my online searches, it seems as though this is a very common issue. 1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Auto start-stop / engine. No not available. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Having your vehicle die at a busy intersection or stop sign is a huge risk. It can cause others to try and swerve around you, or it can cause someone not paying attention to rear end you. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The vehicle will be brought to the dealer in the coming days. Unfortunately this is my only vehicle and I cannot afford to lose it for an extended amount of time, therefore I have to prolong inspection and servicing. The issue has happened to me twice, and has happened to countless others online. According to others on the internet, the dealers are typically slow to address this issue, and even when "addressed" the issues seem to continue. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No, see #3. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warnings prior to the engine cutting out altogether. Only a message after the failures. In both cases I do not remember what the messages said because I was scrambling to restart my car in a busy intersection.
What happened? While driving my 2025 Honda Odyssey, the engine failed to restart during an Auto Idle Stop event at a 4-way stop/intersection. When releasing the brake to take my right-of-way, the engine stalled completely. The vehicle became immobilized, the power steering went heavy/stiff, and the brake pedal became difficult to depress. I had to manually cycle the ignition by shifting to "Park" and pressing the "Start" button multiple times to regain power while traffic was waiting. This has occurred twice. What component or system failed or malfunctioned? The Auto Idle Stop (AIS) system and the Starter/Charging System. A service technician recently documented a "slow crank" during routine maintenance, suggesting the battery is unable to handle the restart load. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The vehicle stalled during a right-of-way transition (green light/4-way stop). This created an immediate risk. The loss of power steering and the stiffened brake pedal could have made the vehicle nearly impossible to maneuver manually on an incline during the failure. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed? A dealership technician confirmed a "slow crank" symptom during a multi-point inspection, though they could not reproduce an issue. The battery tested good. Were there any warning lamps or symptoms before failure? Yes. A "slow crank" was noted by a technician when attempting to start my vehicle to check my vehicle mileage. During the stall itself, a red exclamation point warning appeared on the dashboard.
I see the NHTSA is aware of the issue with Honda Odyssey AutoStart failing to restart the engine which causes the car to need to be restarted fully while stopped in the middle of traffic. I had this issue many times, my car was serviced with a new battery and 2 months laters its starting again. As an aside one of the front parking sensors will randomly go off which can often cause me to turn off the array. Cleaning didnt help.
Vehicle stalled and shut down in traffic after the Auto Idle Stop function engaged at a red light turning the vehicle off and attempting to turn back on. All warning lights flashed. Vehicle would not turn on until after multiple attempts pressing ignition. This has happened multiple (3-4) times over a few months period. Honda dealership was unable to recreate incident but did identify difficulty with engine starting (i.e. slow crank) when manually turning on ignition; however, diagnostics found no issues.
With adaptive cruise control engaged and set on any of the four options, my odyssey’s speed slows down for a short time period then speeds up again as I approach the vehicle I intend to pass. This happens when my odyssey is about a car length behind the vehicle I intend to pass. This happens when I’m passing a vehicle on the left or right side. This doesn’t happen every time I pass a vehicle with adaptive cruse control engaged. I had this odyssey in a Honda dealership shop today, February 26, 2026, to hopefully fix this issue. I can’t confirm this but was told by the service agent at the dealership that when this happens, the brake lights will turn on. The fix the dealership service recommended was to set the adaptive cruse control to the minimum following distance setting. I’m going to quote the service technician’s written comment word for word. “Have found this to be a pretty normal symptom of the adaptive cruse system.” I take that as meaning, the service technician has seen this before and it is normal for this vehicle. If this is “normal”, there is a major safety issue with this odyssey. On the way home from the appointment at the dealership service department I had the adaptive cruse control at it’s closest following setting. I passed a vehicle on the left and this issue happened again. When I got home, I called the service manager and told him my odyssey did have the same issue of slowing down even though the adaptive cruse control was set to the closest following distance setting. One more thing to note, the service technician did take my odyssey for a test drive and did experience and there for confirm the above stated issue with the vehicle slowing down. I did speak with the service manager at the Honda dealership about this issue. He was unaware of any other vehicle with this issue and said he would check into it and get back to me. I purchased this odyssey new on January 16, 2025. This problem existed since the day I have owned it.
i bought this van brand new for over $53000 and it has been hesitating to start for months. i had the battery tested and came back good. The van hesitates to start and sometimes i have to redo the push button because it fails to start the first time. Yesterday, 02/23/2026 the van left myself and the kids stranded at walmart. it would not start for anything yet the lights and radio work and acted like it was not the battery. i had to call my husband to come get us. we went back hours later to jump it and it started. something is faulty with the started or electrical system to start it. i have another appointment to test the battery and i know its going to test good because i just had this done a month ago and it still hesitates to start. i am not impressed at all and readying online that i am not the only one having this problem. it needs looked into.
Over a period of the last several months when the auto idle stop engages at intersections (red lights, stop signs, etc) the vehicle will intermittently fail to restart. The vehicle stalls entirely and goes into a state where you are unable to restart the vehicle for anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes. This is a very dangerous situation and each time have had other motorists honking and frustrated that the vehicle is not going when the light turns green. The vehicle is currently at the Honda dealership for the third time to attempt to repair this issue. The first time it was returned to me and I was told no issues found, the second time (after multiple more failures on road) was told the battery was faulty. The battery was replaced but the failures to restart continue. I can see that there are many claims of this same issue with Honda, however in our experience with this vehicle, very little has been done by Honda to solve this major safety issue.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey features a standard Auto Idle Stop system designed to improve fuel efficiency by shutting off the engine when braking to a stop. While intended to restart upon releasing the brake, my 2025 models have reported issues with failing to restart or stalling.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The failure had occurred while driving from a stoplight, while the auto idle system was enabled. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The contact was advised that a diagnostic test was needed to determine the cause of the failure. The failure had occurred three times; however, the failure had not reoccurred after turning off the vehicle. The dealer informed the contact that the failure might not be duplicated. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 12,549.
Vehicle lost full power all dashboards went blank. When tried to turn off the vehicle switch didn’t turn it off after multiple attempts at complete stop on the busy road vehicle managed to turn off restart system and turn it back on
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 MPH, the vehicle experienced a loss of automotive power. The failure was intermittent. No warning light was illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000.
The idle stop feature sometimes fails to reengage / restart the engine. One time, the van failed to restart and the vehicle completely locked up while I was in an exit ramp to the freeway. I had to turn the van off and turn it back on to get it to shift into drive and go. Similar events have happened a number of times, since the summer of 2025. We have taken it to the dealer twice now, and have been told to "monitor" it. We found the NHTSA report #EA25004 and believe this is the issue we are experiencing. Occasionally, the idle stop will restart, but it's a very violent restart (car sputters and chokes in restart, sounds like it might stall). The car will make a warning light flash and give an error message, but it always clears too quickly to read it.
Complaint Description: While driving my 2025 Honda Odyssey, the Auto Idle‑Stop system engaged in the middle of an intersection at a traffic light, shutting the engine off as designed. When I released the brake pedal, the engine failed to restart, leaving the vehicle stalled in traffic. The dashboard displayed warning indicators including the battery light, and the only way to move the vehicle was to turn off the car completely several time and try to manually restart the engine. This issue has occurred multiple times and poses a serious safety risk, especially when it happens in intersections or heavy traffic. I almost got hit by an oncoming car! On each occasion, surrounding traffic was forced to maneuver around my vehicle, creating the potential for a rear‑end or a side collision. this has been happening for a long time now and these instances are occurring almost weekly at this point. They are increasing. I have seen that other 2025 Odyssey owners are reporting the same issue — engine shuts off after Auto Idle‑Stop activates and will not restart — sometimes requiring a full restart and causing dangerous traffic situations on carfax.com. Based on similar NHTSA‑documented complaints and investigations into Honda Auto Idle‑Stop restart failures, this appears consistent with a known defect pattern involving stalled engines and failure to restart after idle‑stop engagement. (lawinfo.com and edmunds.com) The dealership has already replaced my low pressure fuel pump and state that they are fulkly aware of the issue and have not provided a permanent fix, and the problem continues to occur unpredictably. My wife and 4 children are in this car all the time. This defect could easily lead to an accident if the vehicle becomes immobilized in moving traffic. I am reporting this to ensure it is documented as a potential safety defect requiring investigation and mitigation.
Since purchasing this vehicle brand new off the truck, we have had it back at the dealership multiple times ,we've taken it for the plug in console not working for firesticks, a sensor not working on the passenger side door and claiming it to be open, the sliding door not working correctly, the doors locking and refusing to unlock, battery draining, ac not working, stalling, dying at lights, slamming on its own brakes with nothing around, transmission acting weird, it putting itself in to sport mode, transmission sticking, doors not unlocking or not locking, sensors going off, random errors on dash, screens not working, Car play not working, suspension popping, steering being wiggly and loose, brakes squeeling. Today we were told by the dealership "he saw the damage that is resulting in needing to replace the steering column. With that being said, it is considered a safety hazard to drive this vehicle with the condition the steering column is in." This is after multiple times of saying nothing is wrong to we have to charge the battery to you need a new starter to this.
I brought my van in for service because, when stopped at a traffic light, the vehicle enters automatic shutdown as designed; however, when I release the brake, the engine does not restart. Instead of restarting automatically, the vehicle remains off, and I have had to perform a hard start because it will not crank on its own. The van is a brand-new 2025 Honda that was purchased new. After inspection, I was informed that the battery would need to be replaced. During the same visit, I also reported a vibration issue. After checking this, I was told that the vehicle needs new shocks and that the tires show wear. I was further informed that the tires will not be covered. Given the age of the vehicle and the fact that it was purchased brand new, I am concerned about the need for a battery replacement, suspension repairs, and tire wear at this stage, as well as the decision not to cover the tires.
The CMBS braking system is completely faulty. It regularly brakes for shadows on the ground, going up hills, or for no reason at all. There have been SEVERAL near misses where cars behind me have almost rear ended me because of this cars erratic braking. I have a neck injury from this most recent episode of the car slamming the brakes for no reason.
Auto Start/Stop system engaged, when given gas the engine did not start. Battery light came on and had to turn off and on the vehicle to start the engine. EA25004 - Investigation [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The vehicle completely stalled, we believe it’s related to the engine in reference to the idol on and off mechanism. We began to drive forward and the auto on off starter caused the car to completely shut down and freeze in an intersection.
Idle Stop Failure. This has occurred many times. Presents itself as: Failure to restart upon releasing the brake. Rough restart. Sometimes have to completely turn off car and restart.
My Odyssey has a no-restart issue related to Auto Idle Stop. Engineer did not restart at red light and I had to push the button twice. We were caught in traffic and was not safe.
The car stopped while driving in the middle of the street and would not turn off or on.
The vehicle experiences abnormal vibration and shaking felt from the rear during braking at moderate to highway speeds. The condition does not occur during steady driving and is isolated to braking events. An authorized dealership inspected the vehicle and documented rear brake rotor thickness variation but no repair was performed. The issue has continued and raises concerns about braking stability and safety, especially at higher speeds.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while stopped at a traffic light, the contact released the brake pedal and depressed the accelerator pedal; however, the vehicle failed to respond. The contact believed that the failure was related to the gas saving feature. The vehicle then stalled, but was able to be restarted. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 11,390.
When the Auto Idle Stop is engaged, I have now had 3 instances of the engine completely stalling when at a stop. Not only has the engine stalled, but I have difficulty getting the engine to restart. It has been very scary, as it has left me disabled at busy intersections while I struggle to get my van to start so I can move and pray nobody hits me while I sit there. I've even had to open the driver's door to get the van to restart. We've made a habit of manually turning the auto idle stop feature off every time we drive it. This problem has not occurred when the feature is turned off. The first incident of this was several months ago, and I already took it to my local dealer but they couldn't replicate the issue and did nothing about it.
Over the past month, I have experienced several incidents where my 2025 Honda Odyssey’s Auto Idle Stop (AIS) system failed to restart the engine after stopping at traffic lights. Each time, the engine did not turn back on when I released the brake, leaving me stalled in traffic and prompting error messages on the dashboard. There is currently no way for owners to permanently turn off this feature. When I took my vehicle to the dealership, I was told my starter was already having issues despite the car having less than 10,000 miles on it. This ongoing problem has made me concerned for my safety and the reliability of my vehicle.
My van is a 25 Odyssey Elite with 18K miles. On several occasions, when I have been stopped at a stoplight and the idle function is activated, the vehicle doesn't auto restart and often it must ben put back into park and restarted. This has worked with a bit of effort. It typically is not just a push of the button but rather some sputtering, several attempts at pushing the ignition button and then and eventual start. Today I had it happen again and had a challenge getting it restarted and this time I noticed that the battery red light came on along with some other warning lights (I don't remember which ones as I was panicking to get going an not hold up the line of cars behind me.
In January 2025, we drove to Florida from Michigan. When I started my car every signal light came on. It would not allow me to shut down. We drove it to Orlando Honda and they said the sensor light was covered with road salt. It was very scary. In November 2025 we were driving home in a snowstorm. The sensor in the front got covered and shut down the speed control, warning lights of crossing lane, detecting cars on right or left. I get told every time can’t duplicate. The automatic bright lights got stuck on after only a month of having this car. Dealership says it was off. Well it wasn’t and they still do not work. Speed limit sign on dashboard will go up to 85 miles per hour this is in a 25 mile area. Again they say can’t duplicate. Brakes feel mushy to myself and husband. Again we’re told there is nothing wrong with it. When the speed controls are set there is at least 2 miles difference with my Waze speed and the vehicles speed. I’m told this is normal. Well it’s not. Something is wrong with the electrical system. I owned a Honda Odyssey before and I never had any issues with that one. We’re getting ready to drive to Florida and I’m terrified the system will shut down again. I was told that having road salt on a sensor is not a warranty issue. Well, it is because of poor design. I’m also afraid once this vehicle is no longer under warranty I will be paying $ for this poor design. I’m not happy and now wish I had my old one back.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey has been completely shutting off after the stop-start shuts the engine off. When the car actually “stalls” is when I let off the brake and it’s time to start going. Then I hear a ding, the dash lights come on, and I have to frantically hit the ignition button. This is happening at stop lights where there is the risk for other cars to safely go when the light turns green. I have to completely shut off the car and restart the engine while traffic is going on green.
Vehicle shuts down and will not restart. So far this has happened three times. After a long delay, took foot off gas, held brake and pushed start and would not start. On third attempt vehicle was very labored on start
I stopped at a stoplight and the auto shut off took place, when i tried to take my foot off the brake to start the car, the car did not restart. I stalled at the light with cars behind me and my children, the dash displayed a message saying system problem and flashed I did not get a photo . I shut the car off with the brake and the start button and tried starting it twice, Finally the car restarted and I drove home. Something is wrong with the AIS and it put us in danger
Idle stop engine turned engine off at a stop light. When the foot was removed from the brake pedal the engine struggled to start up. It took several attempts to get the engine to start up. This has occurred before and the dealer replaced the battery. However, it is now happening again. There were no warnings .
My wife and I purchased a new 2025 Honda Odyssey Van as it currently has about 11,000 miles and we both have noticed a front end vibration/rattle/noise that can be heard and felt in the steering wheel at varying speeds in the front suspension which leads me to believe as an engineer there are issues with sway bar end links, bad strut mounts, or loose control arm bushings that are especially noticeable over any bumps. This issue could pose a serious safety issues in dealing with failed suspension or steering that could cause a potential wreck or loss of control of a vehicle and result in a product liability suit for all parties involved especially given suspension and steering are considered critical auto parts in nature. The problem has been reproduced with my making an appointment at Watermark Honda located at 3201 Park Ave, Paducah, KY 42001 on November 19th, 2025 with the Master Service Tech Caleb Buchanan and Service Advisor Harley Littrell both driving the vehicle and acknowledging the noise and vibration. I also have any recorded video while driving at 5-10 mph in the parking lot of Watermark Honda that was shared and viewed by Harley Littrell. The vehicle was inspected with some strut bolts and other front end component bolts being torqued down the same day with the issue not being resolved. Harley/Caleb noted that they were dealing with the same issue on another 2025 Honda Odyssey on the lot to be sold and they were trying to address issues. As of follow-up appointment on 12/11/25, Harley noted this van had several front end parts replaced and it still made noise with this van not being able to be sold to the public. I was advised by Harley to contact American Honda and to file this report. See uploaded video below.
Dear NHTSA, I am submitting a safety complaint regarding my 2025 Honda Odyssey, which has been diagnosed with a transmission failure requiring full replacement due to faulty internal seals. The vehicle is less than one year old, and this type of premature failure raises serious safety concerns. I first became aware that something might be wrong during a routine oil change on November 11, when technicians noticed signs that the transmission might be leaking or malfunctioning. I continued to monitor the vehicle, and on November 28, I was informed that the entire transmission must be replaced due to faulty seals inside the transmission assembly. A critical component like the transmission should not fail this early in the life of the vehicle, and a structural defect such as faulty seals may indicate a manufacturing issue that could affect other vehicles of the same model and year. Information from the dealership: SHEEHY HONDA OF ALEXANDRIA Diagnosed transmission failure caused by faulty seals Recommended repair: Complete transmission replacement Explanation: Premature failure of internal transmission seals leading to fluid loss and unsafe operation Repairs completed so far: Diagnostic inspections confirming failure This vehicle is used to transport children, and a sudden transmission failure presents a significant safety risk. For a new vehicle to require a full transmission replacement within its first year of use is highly concerning. I am requesting that NHTSA review this issue to determine whether other 2025 Honda Odyssey vehicles may also be experiencing similar premature transmission failures. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I can provide repair documentation, inspection notes, photos, or any additional information upon request. Sincerely, Allison Epps 334-464-0233 alijepps@gmail.com Vehicle: 2025 Honda Odyssey
. When auto start/stop engages at stoplights and fails to restart radomaly but not always, the vehicle remains stationary and blocks traffic lanes when battery light turns on. This creates hazardous conditions where other vehicles must maneuver around a stalled vehicle in intersections, risking rear-end collisions and traffic disruptions. Dealer was not able to replicate Issue as this, i expeted this becouse happens randon times maybe based on weater or after driving for longer peroids . Dealership's only recommendation was to manually disable auto start/stop every time the vehicle is operated. This is unacceptable for a new vehicle and defeats the purpose of this safety
Stopped at red light. Auto start/stop engaged. Light turned green let off of brake and pressed gas. Engine did not start. Couple seconds later engine started.
Blind Spot Monitoring System does not register vehicles sometimes. Sometimes when passing a vehicle, light does not illuminate. Sometimes cars will pass the vehicle and light does not illuminate.
When the vehicle is stopped, and the auto-shut off engages, the vehicle will turn off, and the vehicle has to be restarted. Quite dangerous when in traffic and the vehicle is dead due to the auto-shut off not starting again. The fix is believed to be an updated starter engine computer and starter motor.
Category: Structure / Water Leak / Electrical System Risk Vehicle: 2025 Honda Odyssey Description of the Problem: My 2025 Honda Odyssey has a repeated and serious water leak issue that affects the driver-side floor area. I first discovered the leak on October 30, 2025, with the driver-side carpet and foam padding completely soaked. The dealership (Sloane Honda in Philadelphia) kept the vehicle for two days but claimed they could not find any leak. On November 19, 2025, the same leak occurred again, with even more water present under the driver-side carpet and foam. I have photos and videos showing significant water accumulation. This presents multiple safety hazards: Potential electrical short circuits in wiring under the carpet Mold growth affecting occupant health Floorboard corrosion Impaired vehicle operation The vehicle is currently back at the dealership, and Honda has not provided a proper resolution. This is a recurring structural defect that poses a safety risk and should be investigated.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact was unable to pull over to the side of the road. The contact turned on the hazard lights. The contact waited to restart the vehicle and after several attempts the vehicle restarted. The contact stated that upon depressing the brake pedal and pushing the Start button, the brake pedal was stiff while the start button made an abnormal beeping sound. The message "Press the Brake Pedal and Push the Start Button," was displayed. The contact was able to continue driving; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal. The failure had occurred four times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed; however, the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle remained at the dealer undiagnosed and unrepaired. The contact no longer felt safe driving the vehicle and left the vehicle at the dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 18,886.
The vehicle intermittently fails to restart after the auto start/stop stopped the engine. This happened several times when stopped at a traffic signal, nearly causing an accident when cars behind expected to move after the traffic signal turned green. There were no warnings or indications prior to the failure to start. Multiple attempts to restart the vehicle failed until at least a minute or so had elapsed. The vehicle has also intermittently failed to start after being parked for a few minutes after being driven for 20 minutes or so. The starter has generally sounded weak when starting, and when it fails to start it sounds like the engine tries to start turning for a fraction of a second before it stops trying to crank the engine. It almost seems like the start duration is too short or the ECU thinks the engine has successfully started when it hasn't. I brought the vehicle into the dealership to have this checked, and they replaced the battery saying it was bad. However, the failures to start continued to happen shortly after. I returned the vehicle to the dealership to be checked again. They have not yet identified anything that could be causing the issue. They claim the battery and starter test good. Based on similar complaints, it seems that this is an issue with many of these vehicles. Honda needs to identify the root cause of this failure to start issue.
COMPLAINT: 2025 HONDA ODYSSEY AUTO START/STOP SYSTEM FAILURE Component Failed: Auto start/stop system fails to restart engine after automatic shutdown. Vehicle available for inspection. Appears related to investigation INOA-EA25004-10033. Safety Risk: Vehicle has failed to restart approximately 12 times since May 2025, all at intersections with active traffic. When auto start/stop engages at stoplights and fails to restart, the vehicle remains stationary and blocks traffic lanes when lights turn green. This creates hazardous conditions where other vehicles must maneuver around a stalled vehicle in intersections, risking rear-end collisions and traffic disruptions. Dealer Confirmation: Yes. Authorized Honda dealership tested battery (good), contacted Honda customer support directly. Honda acknowledged the issue but provided no diagnostic solution or repair procedure. Dealership's only recommendation was to manually disable auto start/stop every time the vehicle is operated. This is unacceptable for a new vehicle and defeats the purpose of this factory system. Manufacturer Inspection: Authorized Honda dealership consulted with Honda customer support. No fix or remedy provided. Warning Symptoms: None. No warning lamps or dashboard messages appear before or during failure. Auto start/stop system operates normally until restart phase, then engine fails to restart. First occurrence May 2025. Problem occurs intermittently.
When’s stopping the vehicle it shut off and stall to come back on or cut off completely and when i try to restart the vehicle it take several attempts before coming back on. It happens often if i dont turn off the the auto feature
6 month old new Car stalled out at red light Took a few minutes to restart Think it had to do with idle start/stop
With vehicle auto start/stop feature enabled, vehicle just shuts off when attempting to start back up after shutting off at a stop light. It has happened multiple times and recently it even happened with the auto start/stop feature turned off. Took it to the dealership and they tested everything to include the battery and they weren’t able to duplicate it. A review of forums showed other people with the same issue and it is pointing to a faulty starter, but no recall has been issued yet.
When car is stopped it completely shuts off, goes into park and does not restart. This has happened 3 times, twice at an intersection and once as I slowed to a stop sign. The car didn’t restart and I had to push the engine start to restart the car. This was dangerously because it has happened while I stopped but also while I was slowing down at an intersection, the car would abruptly shut off. When this happens warning lights on the dash appear but go away once I restart the engine.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey has been completely shutting off after the stop-start shuts the engine off. When the car actually “stalls” is when I let off the brake and it’s time to start going. Then I hear a ding, the dash lights come on, and I have to frantically hit the ignition button to restart my car. This happens intermittently, without warning. I've been stuck at redlights afraid I will be rear ended because all of a sudden I can't move forward at a green light. My and others safety is at risk. Honda does not allow the start/stop to be disabled by default. It has to be disabled, manually, by the driver, every single time the car is restarted. So you can't just ignore this problem by shutting off the feature when the feature won't allow itself to be shut off by default.
The Idle Stop feature failed to restart the engine when I released the brake after having stopped at a traffic light. Eventually restarted after more than a minute of manually pressing the ignition button.
I came to a stop at a stop sign. Then "auto off" shut off the engine. Next, the vehicle went into park. A message came on screen telling me to press the brake and the start button. Doing so had no effect. Cars behind me started honking. After repeatedly stabbing the start button and opening and closing my driver's door, the vehicle eventually rebooted, and the engine started as normal. This caused a dangerous situation where other cars went into opposing traffic to get around me.
Auto start/stop functionality has resulted in vehicle stalling mid traffic as vehicle does not start and shutdowns. This has occurred in multiple occasions and most recently almost caused an accident with my family. We sent to dealer who checked battery and stated to issues. There were no warnings and dealer was unable to reproduce as they didn’t drive the vehicle. I have concerns with this new vehicle after finding other reports of this issue.
The car stalled then stopped when I was at a traffic light, I had to press the start engine button multiple times to restart the car. This issue has occurred 3 times within the last two months.
My car has been dying when I stop at stoplights. We took it into the dealership and they said the battery was sending error messages. So we replaced the battery. It is doing it again. Sometimes it starts but it is getting progressively harder to restart it. It is dangerous to be stalled at an intersection. The car is not even a year old.
I am having issues with my auto start/stop, also, occasionally has issues starting from a cold start! I was at a red traffic light, and once the light turned green I went to go and my car died. I had to put it in park and try and restart it and it took me three times for it to restart. Everybody was honking at me. This is a safety issue.
Hand control device for disabled drivers is correctly installed under the stearing wheel and works as intended. However, device has several very sharp right angle and corner points that, in the event of a collision, the sharp (not rounded) areas would severely damage driver's knees.
The idle stop system is malfunctioning. I had it inspected once previously and now trying to get it inspected again for the same occurring issue. The dealership continues to tell me to turn off the idle stop feature on the vehicle. My safety was put at risk because of the vehicle stalling and not kicking back on while being stopped at a redlight on a busy 4 lane highway multiple times now. The first time, I was by myself. The second time, my 8-month-old was in the vehicle with me. This causes a lot of panic as there are impatient drivers around me since I am unable to move my vehicle. I fear that this could happen on a freeway if there was construction, an accident or even while trying to turn in an intersection and getting hit because I can’t move my vehicle and often have my two small children with me. The first time the idle stop stalled, it occurred twice in a week. The first time was rather quick, and the engine kicked over quickly so I did not think anything more of it. The second time which happened a few days later (9/17/25), took about 5 minutes to get the engine going again and moving on the road (4 lane highway). I took it back to my local Honda dealership where they performed a diagnostic test and discovered the battery had dipped down to 7.22V when trying to restart, the battery failed the battery test and ended up being replaced with a new battery. The idle stop issue has now happened for a third time (10/21/25), with the same issues occurring and I am waiting to be able to get back into Honda. The vehicle has only been looked at by my local Honda dealership. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other notifications prior to the failure. I received a warning on the dashboard after the events occurred on how to start the vehicle. This is very disappointing as a new Honda owner. My husband and I decided on Honda over other car companies due to their reliability and this has now become a constant worry.
Honda Odyssey EX-L sport 2025 has been facing the issue of idle stop not working causing engine to stall, engine failing to restart, shutting off completely during mid traffic especially during adaptive cruise control operation. This is causing an unsafe driving situation. While this issue was reported to Scott Clark Honda multiple times and they have claimed to fix this issue in Aug 2025, the issue continues to exist and root cause hasn't been fixed. This seems to be related towards the on-going investigation by NHTSA. Please help to resolve at the earliest since no further support is being received from Honda.
Since July 4, 2025, this can has intermittently shut off and stalled on me, my wife and my family and has refused to start. It has now been back to the service department of Trust Honda of Palmdale 4 different times for the same problem and the battery has been replaced on this van back in July. Most recently, it stalled just two days ago in rush hour morning traffic on the 405 Freeway going South in the San Fernando Valley. The display on the dash read “dead battery “. It took over 20 minutes for the van to start and my wife was able to move it off of the freeway to a safe location.
2025 Honda Odyssey EX-L My concern and issue is that the 2025 Honda. On 18 October 2025 the Honda Odyssey shuts down by its self after stopping at a red light. I believe it has something to do with the feature of auto start/stop system. This has happened multiple times. The vehicle sporadically fails to restart after coming to a complete stop. The engine shuts off as expected at a stoplight, but when I release the brake, the vehicle hesitates to crank over or start which has left me stalled in traffic numerous times. No warning lights or messages ever appear prior to the issue. This issued has left me in the middle of the road numerous time with traffic behind me. This takes a couple of minutes to restart the engine because the vehicle lights are turned on and it appears that the Odyssey doesn't have enough power to turn on the vehicle. But after multiple tries the Odyssey finally turns on. This is extremely dangerous because it can cause another car rear ending us and injuring my family.
Description of the Problem I am filing this complaint regarding a serious safety concern and poor quality repair on my 2025 Honda Odyssey, which I purchased new less than one year ago. 1. Engine Auto Idle Stop / Starter Failure Issue The vehicle suddenly shut down when the “Auto Idle Stop” feature was activated. This incident occurred multiple times, and I was unable to restart the engine until several attempts later. This creates a dangerous situation, especially in traffic or intersections. When I contacted the dealer, they confirmed that the issue is caused by a starter motor failure, and the replacement part will not be available until early November — meaning I must drive for over a month with this feature turned off. Many other owners have reported similar problems online, which strongly suggests a potential defect that should qualify for a safety recall. 2. Water Leak and Poor Quality Repair My vehicle also experienced a water leak from the roof area. The dealer attempted to fix it by simply applying sealing material on the roof molding (see attached photos). The repair looks extremely unprofessional, and I requested them to properly replace or reinstall the roof molding, but they refused. This type of repair is unacceptable for a new vehicle of this class and price. 3. Honda’s Unsatisfactory Response I contacted Honda Customer Service (1-800-999-1009) and spoke directly with a representative. However, I was told that: They cannot extend the warranty. They cannot offer any compensation or goodwill service. They cannot provide me with a record or copy of our phone conversation (even though they recorded it). They will only repair the starter once parts arrive. I explained that I have already spent time, fuel, and lost work hours visiting the dealer multiple times, yet they refused any support. Safety Concern and Requested Action The engine shut-off issue clearly affects vehicle safety and could cause accidents in traffic. I request that NHTSA inv
When I stop, they start stop, turns the engine off, but when I release the brake, the engine struggles to turn over and sometimes doesn’t and I have to put it in park to restart it. I have taken it to the dealership already once, but they said they weren’t able to reproduce it. I will be taking it back to the dealer to try again.
The issue involves the auto start/stop system on my 2025 Honda Odyssey Touring. When the feature is turned on, the vehicle intermittently fails to restart after coming to a complete stop. The problem does not occur when the start/stop system is disabled. During normal driving, the engine shuts off as expected at a stoplight, but when I release the brake, the vehicle hesitates or fails to crank, leaving it stalled in traffic. The Honda dealership confirmed the issue and stated that the starter motor needs to be replaced. The van has approximately 9,300 miles. No warning lights or messages appear before the failure. The problem occurs only when the start/stop system is active. This presents a safety concern, as the vehicle can lose power and fail to move when traffic lights change or when merging, increasing the risk of a rear-end collision or blocking intersections. The vehicle is currently being inspected and repaired by the Honda dealer and is available for inspection upon request.
Two concerning and dangerous malfunctions are occurring. 1.)When car is stopped at a light for more than 45 seconds the car engine shuts off, when I press on the gas the dashboard lights up and displays a battery light and advises me to restart the car. The car struggles to turn over. 2.) The car struggles to start on initial start as well. The dealership replaced the battery and it continues to happen, they advised me to disengage idol stop every time I start my vehicle to save the starter and prevent the car from stalling. This is obviously a problem with the Honda idol start that needs to be addressed. There are multiple threads in online forums about this issue with Honda.
If the car is standing in sun on a very hot day, upon starting the engine it will start beeping with all these errors blinking and disabling these controls. Once the engine runs for 15,20 minutes and the car cools down, the warnings disappear too.
Three times now since buying my van about 6 months ago brand new, I come to a stop light, the engine turns off, but then it won't come back on when the light turns green. I have had to put my hazards on while I frantically push the start button multiple times. Eventually it will start up but takes 1-2 minutes. I brought it into the dealer the first time and they blamed it on a weak battery. After it happened 2 more times, they are replacing the starter but I'm afraid that's not going to fix it. While I wait, i just have to turn off the idle start/stop button every time I start my van.
THE AUTO STOP/START OR AUTO IDLES FEATURE ON THE CAR keeps stalling after the car stops AT THE RED LIGHT. It can cause a rear collision.
Idlestop fail to restart engine multiple occasions at busy intersections.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that after opening the electronic passenger side sliding door, the door failed to electronically close while pressing the close button. The contact exited the vehicle and manually closed the door. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 3,000.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the Engine Auto Start-Stop system failed to operate as needed. The contact stated upon coming to a stop, the engine shutoff; however, upon releasing the brake pedal, the contact became aware that the engine failed to restart as designed. A message of a systems failure was displayed, and an image of a pedal and the Push to Start button were displayed. The contact was able to manually restart the vehicle immediately. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring and had worsened. The contact stated that the vehicle could only be manually restarted after 10 minutes, nearly causing a crash. The dealer was contacted, and an appointment was scheduled for a diagnostic test. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 16,000.
The idle engine feature is defective. Often, when stopped and the engine goes idle, it will not restart when the driver releases the brake. The van stalls, and the driver is forced to move the vehicle into park and start the engine again. This is dangerous and stressful because the driver behind you expects you to go, especially when the light turns green, but you are stalled, potentially leading to rear-end accidents.
Vehicle stalled on a highway after an idle stop event at a stop light. Vehicle went to PARK. Required a full restart by operator to go when light changed and traffic was flowing in other lanes. Dealership examined next day and indicated battery was good. Voltage dropping to 8V to 10V when starting. Recommended to disable idle stop each time vehicle is started. A new starter was authorized and placed on order.
Vehicle shut off and put itself in park leaving a stop light. Was hard to restart.
Brand new vehicle and system shuts down a few times when in idle mode..(stoplight, stop sign) then I need to restart the car again.
The moonroof on my 2025 Honda Odyssey spontaneously exploded while I was driving it on [XXX] between New Orleans and Slidell, LA. The date of the incident was [XXX]. I was traveling at about 65 mph, the outside temperature was 93 deg F and the sky was clear. The highway was smooth and there was no construction in the area which would have produced loose pebbles or rocks. The explosion was like an artillery piece had fired overhead. I was lucky to have maintained control of the vehicle and the moonroof sliding cover was closed preventing broken glass from showering down on my wife and me. The next day I brought the car to the dealership (Royal Honda, Metairie, LA)to report the defect and to have the car repaired. I was told by the dealer that the manufacturer does not inspect failures such as this one and that Honda declined to repair the damage under warranty even though the minivan had less that 4,000 miles on it and 3 months old. My wife was driving our 2025 Honda Odyssey on [XXX] on a neighborhood road around [XXX]. She came to a stop sign and stopped to turn right. Upon accelerating to turn right, the emergency braking system activated slamming on the brakes and bringing the vehicle to an immediate stop. There were no other cars, pedestrians or other obstacles with any line of sight. The sudden stop caused her to whiplash hurting her shoulder. We brought the vehicle to Joyce Koons Honda of Manassas. They downloaded the data and confirmed that the emergency braking system had activated but there were no reason codes given. They couldn't find any other issue and test drove the vehicle for 10 miles with no incident. My wife was really shaken up by the incident and refuses to drive the car until an actual cause is found and fixed. At a stop, the fuel save system shut the car off. When you take your foot off the brake the van fails to restart. If you try to restart using the push button the car will still not start because the transmission is still in drive. Then it takes awhile to get the transmission into park/neutral and then the van will start. The problem is intermittent 3 times in the last 2 months. No accidents just blocking traffic. My wife doesn't like that.
After going into Auto-idle at a traffic light. The engine did not turn back on when accelerator was pressed. Even after a restart. It took about 30 seconds.
I think there is a problem with the Auto Idle Stop system that has resulted in the starter needing to be replaced. But, the dealership says nothing is wrong. The Auto Idle Stop malfunction lights up when I let off the brake. I have gotten in the habit of turning off the AIS every time I started the car. However, it still is hesitating to start, which leads me to believe the AIS has killed the starter.
Van completely shut down while in an intersection and the battery light came on. It was hard to restart. Took it to the dealership and they cannot find the problem.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the vehicle had a new feature that, when the vehicle was at an idle stop, the engine would shut off automatically, and while the vehicle was stopped for several seconds. The engine was supposed to restart automatically when the driver released the brake pedal. The contact stated that on two occasions, the engine shut off and failed to restart. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, no cause for the failure was found. The body control module was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000.
Normal speed of 25mph on a clear warm day with no road obstructions when the BRAKE System Indicator (Red) illuminated. I pressed on the brake and had severe resistance and was barely able to stop the car. Two more indicators illuminated. One I believe was the Vehicle Stability Assist and the other I don't recall. The screen flashed "Call your Dealer". The Owners Manual states "Have your vehicle repaired immediately." The vehicle was hauled to Southeast Honda. Codes UO416-680416-F8, U0418-68, U3000-49I. The Brake Booster was replaced. I am concerned that an in-experienced driver traveling at interstate speeds might have a fatal issue.
I am reporting a recurring issue with my 2025 Honda Odyssey, which exhibits difficulty starting the engine. Approximately two months after purchasing the vehicle in Dec 2024, the original battery failed and was replaced under warranty. However, the vehicle continues to experience problems when attempting to start. When I press the start button, the engine hesitates, cranks slowly, or feels as though it nearly fails to start. This issue occurs intermittently, regardless of weather conditions or the duration the vehicle has been parked. No warning lights or error messages have appeared on the dashboard The problem has occurred multiple times, most recently on Friday August 15th 2025, and creates a safety concern, as the vehicle’s unreliable starting could leave me stranded in potentially hazardous situations, such as remote locations or adverse weather. I have not yet had the vehicle inspected by a dealer for this specific issue, but I plan to schedule a service appointment to diagnose the problem. The prior battery replacement suggests potential issues with the electrical system, starter, or related components, possibly linked to the auto start/stop system currently under NHTSA investigation for 2018–2025 Honda Odyssey models. Additionally when driving down the road especially at low speeds the engine hesitates as if it’s not getting enough gasoline. Lastly the AppleCarplay screen and all other associated screens randomly go out. I have been to the dealership 3 times for repairs and they give me the run around saying they don’t notice anything so Honda won’t pay for anything and send me on my way.
On two separate occasions the vehicle’s engine has turned off when stopped as part of the Auto Idle Stop feature and then did not restart when I took my foot off the brake and pushed on the gas pedal. I was stuck in traffic frantically trying to get the van to restart and eventually was able to get it. This is a new van I’ve had less than a year. I took it to the dealer after the first incident and described the problem. They kept it for more than a day troubleshooting and didn’t find a solution. Verbally they recommended using the button that turns off the Auto Idle Stop feature that must be pressed each time the van is started to turn the off the feature. I’ve done that most of the time since, but I happened to forget this week and then it happened a second time where I was unexpectedly stuck in traffic with the engine not coming back on.
We get a warning light saying "Adaptive Cruise Control System Problem". Van has 4200 miles and it happens during hot days, usually at lunch time. I took it to dealer "Honda Cars of Rock Hill, SC" but they told me there is no code showing up in the Van. I emailed honda America with video but so far no response. The system just goes crazy, beeping and the cruise control is no responsive to cancel button or anything. We are not even using the adaptive cruise control when this happens. After you drive for a while, it goes away, like nothing happened. But when another hot summer day comes, around lunch time, it goes... it does it pretty much during high temps. never in the evening or night time. here is link to YouTube video I sent to Honda: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
While driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicles emergency avoidance system activated and applied the brakes very heavily. We were nearly hit by a vehicle behind us, which nearly caused multiple accidents. There was nothing in front of us, and the road was co.pletely clear in front of us.
The auto on/off while idling will randomly fail. The car stalls, all emergency lights turn on and the car won’t start for a few minutes. This has occurred at stop lights and in traffic after coming to a complete stop and the car turns off when idling. The car is only 6 months old. The first occurrence happened at the 3 month mark and has become more persistent. I’ve had my battery checked and that was not an issue.
On two differed occasions the AIS system failed and left my car disabled at an intersection. I was sitting at a traffic light and the car died when I took my foot off the break and attempted to proceed through the intersection. Additionally, I have a faulty seat/seat belt. The seat does not register an occupant or indicates the occupant is not buckled in when they actually have fastened their seat belt.
On June 14th 2025, I reversed up my driveway, uphill, shifted to neutral to allow the vehicle to roll downhill a bit so I could straighten it out. While rolling forward, the transmission was jammed into park with no warning or interaction from me, causing my head to sling forwards in a whiplash fashion from the abrupt change in inertia. This was both harmful to me, to the transmission, and is a major defect. Engaging a transmission into park while moving is reckless, harmful and extremely dangerous. The failing component is most likely the transmission control unit and is available for inspection upon request, but has not been inspected by anyone other than myself. The problem is reproducible by me.
I am an engineer and my respect of the laws of probability makes me a cautious driver. I've had m+y 2025 Honda Odyssey for six months, but only driven it 500 miles since it cannot be trusted. I stopped at a light waiting to safely make a left hand turn. I began my turn with enough time for two vehicles to follow me. After pressing the accelerator the vehicle slowly responded. The stall left me in the intersection, so I accelerated hard to avoid being killed. The sudden acceleration was difficult to control and almost resulted in me going off the road. I've come to learn this resulted from a Honda design decision. They have a feature called "Auto Idle Stop" that is ON BY DEFAULT. I was never informed of this feature and believe this was a reckless, or should we say reckmore, decision. This was clearly a deadly design decision. The USG must fix this. In addition, the USG should charge the engineers, and their management, for reckless endangerment.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that upon opening the electronic tailgate, the contact noticed 2 inches of water at the bottom of the interior of the trunk. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that a musty odor was emitting from the vehicle. No cause for the failure was found. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact stated that the carpet in the back interior has mold. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 2,500.
While driving in a construction zone, the vehicle's lane departure system jerked the wheel and almost made me leave the lane Very dangerous. Same vehicle, the A'C was found not operating and a dealer diagnosis found that the system was overfilled and that an electrical connection was not hooked up from the factory. Same vehicle, body panels are not properly aligned from the sliding door to the passenger side door, gap is almost 1/2 inch.
While driving vehicle, the sunroof exploded. I had to fabric inner aspect closed so glass did not enter the vehicle. My [XXX] was in the 2nd row and would have had glass in her face if I had been driving with the fabric part open. Honda is fixing the sunroof currently but I feel unsafe driving with it now. I was on a side street with no overpass near, no cars around and no other vehicle to throw rocks. It simply exploded. Complaint & Reliability Timeline
Annual complaints (blue) vs. composite reliability score (amber) — recall years marked in red
The blue line shows 447 total NHTSA complaints filed over 2 years, with the worst year being 2026 (380 complaints, including 2 crash reports).
The amber reliability line is declining — recent years score around 68/100, lower than earlier in the vehicle's life. This pattern indicates issues are accumulating over time rather than being resolved, which is a concern for used buyers.
Notably, despite 447 complaints on file, no recall has been issued — either the defect pattern has not met NHTSA's threshold for a formal campaign, or a recall may be forthcoming.
Red dots on the amber line flag 2 years (2025, 2026) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
