ODI #11744063STEERING

In May of 2026, I began experiencing vibration and steering wheel instability while going over bumps and while braking, as well as while changing lanes. This vibration and instability got progressively worse and concerning, therefore, I took the vehicle in to the dealer for diagnostic testing on 6/2/2026. The dealership diagnosed and informed me of the steering assembly failure. The rack and pinion assembly is the defective component. It is currently available for inspection as it has not been replaced yet. It may not be available by the time I receive a response, as the vehicle is deemed "unsafe to drive" by the service advisor, and I need the vehicle repaired. I imagine they will send the part back to the manufacturer to assess the premature failure of the steering assembly. It is a premature failure, as the vehicle's current mileage is 34,303, therefore it is not normal "wear and tear". The dealer service center technician has confirmed that there is "a lot of play" and the entire steering assembly needs to be replaced (see video and photo). To my knowledge, the component has also been inspected by Nissan Corporate Consumer Affairs as part of their Goodwill Assistance Program. However, they will not provide a report/documentation to confirm this, as it is an "internal review" and their policy does not allow them to provide this documentation to the consumer. Additionally, the inner tie rods were inspected due to NHTSA Recall: 23V-581; Nissan ID: R23B3, and replaced by the dealer service center on 1/14/25 as a result of the inspection. In my opinion, the defective inner tie rods contributed to (or were a direct cause of) the premature steering assembly failure, as they were on my vehicle for close to 3 years before being inspected and replaced as a result of the recall. I believe the bent tie rods put strain on the rack and pinion assembly, resulting in premature damage and steering assembly failure.

While driving in rush hour traffic, I heard an intermittent vibration/noise that seemed to come and go and became louder when I stopped. As I put my car in park when I got home, I heard a loud clunk and the battery light came on. When I popped the hood, we saw metal shavings flying around. The dealer diagnosed the alternator and provided a quote for replacement. I am concerned the failure could have caused a loss of power while driving and caused an accident in heavy traffic. The vehicle and component are currently at the dealership. I have a video of the metal shavings that I can provide if needed, but I am unable to upload to the website.

The contact owns a 2022 Nissan Sentra. The contact stated that while driving on several occasions at various speeds, the steering was difficult to maintain as the vehicle drifted and the steering wheel was stiff. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the front end needed to be aligned. The vehicle was repaired, but the same and additional failures reoccurred less than a year later. The contact stated that on several occasions at various speeds, the steering wheel began pulling and shaking, and she observed a loud noise emanating from under the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that both wheel bearings, the sway bar, and the front axle were damaged and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred approximately six months later. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the driver strut needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted, as the vehicle still pulled to the right and she observed a bumping noise near the front of the vehicle as if something was loose. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000.

1) within three months of vehicle purchase (and in perpetuity to-date ever since), the infotainment system intermittently causes static/crackling when connected to CarPlay. 2) within six months of initial purchase (and in perpetuity to-date ever since), also between each subsequent biannual oil change, electronic system would randomly notify that there was a malfunction with rear collision sensors or front collision sensors. Diagnostics being ran each time found no issues. Dealership workers suggested that it may have to do with the sensors being blocked by light, and that diagnostics found no resolve. 3) May 15, 2026, 3 years and 3 months after purchase, the vehicle suddenly wouldn’t start. I was able to drive home from work, and two hours later when I went to start the vehicle, it would click as if the electrical system was connecting online, but not detecting that I was pressing the brake pedal to turn the vehicle on. All interior lights were operational and stayed lit, suggesting that it likely wasn’t an issue with the battery itself or the starter itself… But potentially a connection issue between the starter and the mechanism that turns the engine. If this issue is also electrical, it suggests that the other intermittent issues may be related - warning signs that it would eventually cause the vehicle to be non-starting. As far as safety concerns with the issue, as it presented itself, not being able to detect vehicles with electronic malfunctions periodically can cause issues while driving; infotainment system failure can make any emergency calls requires a non-starter; and lastly, not being able to start the vehicle could lead to being stranded. 70+ complaints have already been issued regarding electronics specifically. It is noteworthy that I’ve also experienced issues with the CVT as it’s been described by other drivers, namely, that from what I’ve noticed, RPMs fluctuate widely when trying to accelerate between 30-40 and 50+ mph.

In the interior of the car on the passenger side there are water droplets. The droplet has no smell. There is no evidence of pooling water when I opened the glove compartment. I felt as far a I could behind the glove compartment for moistener, I couldn’t feel any. However I just purchased new winter floor mats. As I was vacuuming my car out I noticed the carpet was wet. I just purchased the car on Sept 08,2025 and thought it may be damp from the car being shampooed. Once I place the rubber winter mats down is when I noticed the droplets. I’ve read there were recalls on the 2022 Sentra for similar issues of water droplets from possible air conditioner condensation. I suspect my car maybe experiencing similar issue. I noticed these droplet as a result on my air conditioner being on.

There are issues with the sensors. Specifically, the collision sensors. I have owned a 2022 Nissan Sentra for a few months now and multiple times have had the traction control malfunction warning, front collision sensor malfunction warning, and back collision sensor malfunction warning appear. In turn, this makes other safety features like the lane departure warning malfunction as well. This is a safety risk because first, the point of collision sensors is to minimize the risk of being in an accident. Second, if the sensors are corroding or have issues it can cause a fire or damage other aspects of the vehicle. I payed for multiple reports of the car. I assumed it was in an accident and the dealership did not disclose it. As the issue becomes more persistent it is clear that is what the car does. Malfunction.

ODI #11672907SERVICE BRAKES

I experienced a second brake booster failure within 1300 miles of the replacement. The booster should be available for inspection, but I do not have it. The dealership has it. On May 9, 2025, at 38,349 miles, my booster failed, experiencing a very loud audible boom and insulation hanging under my car. It was taken to a Nissan dealership and they verified it was something they’d never seen before. It was replaced, then on June 23, at 39,630 miles, it failed again. I had my 4 year old daughter in the car the second time and thankfully was able to stop, but it could have been catastrophic in heavier traffic or at higher speeds. It was inspected by a second Nissan dealership. They advised there was oil in my brake fluid, but did not advise how it could have happened. They also said they aren’t sure what caused it and they’ve also never seen this before. One failure is rare, a second within 1300 miles is extremely rare. The symptoms, I feel, began in January. During a warranty strut replacement, I advised that my brakes were doing something strange and I wasn’t sure if it was the brakes or transmission. I was recommended to have a cvt flush and brake fluid change. I feel this was the booster, but the dealership said there are no symptoms of a failing booster. If those were not symptoms of the booster, then the first symptom began around May 5. When I would start my car, I noticed the brake pedal was stiff until I started it. It drove normal until I pressed the brake while idling in my driveway preparing to leave and heard a loud boom, followed by a hissing sound coming from my brake and a very stiff pedal. My brake is still very stiff when I go to start my car (as if I’ve pressed the brake multiple times, but I am pressing it for the first time). This is potentially the first symptom I experienced before the first failure, it’s a symptom that has not gone away since the first failure. The first failure was also reported and the complaint number is: 11663673

ODI #11663673SERVICE BRAKES

On May 9, 2025, my car was idling in my driveway. I put my foot on the brake to leave and heard an explosion so loud it was mentioned in multiple Facebook groups and heard in at least 3 towns. There was insulation hanging from the bottom of my car. It has been towed to the Nissan dealership and they said my brake booster exploded and confirmed that they had never seen that before. I believe this is a safety issue as had I been on the highway it could have caused a fatal accident. It is still at the dealership so I do not yet have documentation or receipts, but I was told to submit a report ASAP.

ONE DAY IN JANUARY THIS YEAR, I FELT A VIBRATION IN MY STEERING WHEEL. I BROUGHT MY CAR TO A TIRE SHOP FOR ALIGNMENT AND WHEEL BALANCING BUT THE PROBLEM WAS UNSOLVED. TWO WEEKS AGO WHEN I OPENED THE DMV RENEWAL FORM, I SAW THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR MY 2022 NISSAN SENTRA. PER NHSTA RECALL NO. 23V-581, IT STATES THAT THE MANUFACTURER MAY HAVE INSTALLED A CHEAP, WEAK OR SUBSTANDARD TIE RODS. AS A RESULT, THE STEERING WHEEL MAY BE OFF CENTER AND EXPERIENCE VIBRATION WHICH IS EXACTLY MY PROBLEM. I BROUGHT TO A DEALERSHIP AND THEY WERE ABLE TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE TIE RODS. HOWEVER, THE VIBRATION IN MY STEERING WHEEL REMAINS. I BELIEVE THAT OVERTIME, THE SUBSTANDARD TIE RODS ORIGINALLY INSTALLED BY THE MANUFACTURER MAY HAVE AFFECTED AND/OR DAMAGED ALL OTHER COMPONENTS RELATED TO STEERING. IF THEY HAVE INSTALLED THE RIGHT PARTS THEN I SHOULD HAVE BE HAVING THIS PROBLEM AND NISSAN SHOULD BE LIABLE FOR THIS MATTER. It has not been confirmed by a dealer, due to the fact they said im not on the list for recall, but am having the same exact problems as other 2022 sentras that have been recalled. They want to charge 230 dollars just for a diagnostic. No warning lamps or messages appeared. I was told I would receive an a call regarding the results to determine if Nissan was at fault ( this makes no sense since there’s an open recall and the tie rod is bent/broken). I’ve yet to hear from Nissan Consumer with the results. I’ve left 2 messages and no one has returned my call. The dealership is charging a daily storage fee, car/insurance payments are being made on a vehicle that’s not in my possession. My daughter has to pay for Uber rides for her classes at the school where she has to do observations for her degree. She has to pay for grocery delivery. Additionally, my daughter is a recent kidney transplant recipient. She has doctors appointments she must attend. Without a vehicle, I have to go to a different city to pick her up, take her to the appointment and bring her back. Which means I have to take off from work ( loss wages/ or use vacation time) which I shouldn’t have to, until this issue is rectified. I understand the protocol and we’re not the only consumers with issue, but over a month is ridiculous.

No software update was ever offered to me, all things I complained about were consistently denied. Nothing was done to repair this electrical problem or glitch while my car was under warranty -prior to hitting 30,000;The drive car door will sometimes stick and will not open - i will have to exit on the passenger side. To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the ongoing safety issue with the 2022 Nissan Sentra, NHTSA Recall Number 23V-581. This recall, which has been open since August 2023, poses a significant safety risk to drivers and other vehicles on the road and their passengers. What is particularly concerning is that similar issues were reported in the 2021 Nissan Sentra models, indicating that this problem has been persistent and ongoing. Despite this, no estimate for a remedy has been provided, leaving affected vehicle owners in a state of uncertainty and potential danger. Furthermore, the fact that the 2024 version of the Nissan Sentra is already in sales without any reported similar problem suggests that Nissan has found a solution for the new versions. This raises questions about why no action has been taken to address this critical safety issue in previous models. It is imperative that Nissan takes immediate action to rectify this issue for the 2022 Nissan Sentra models. Owners should not have to wait any longer for a solution, especially when the safety of themselves and others is at stake. The apparent lack of commitment by Nissan to address this issue promptly and effectively is deeply concerning and must be rectified without delay. I urge the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to request a deadline commitment by Nissan on finding a solution to provide a safety remedy as soon as possible. The safety of drivers must always be the top priority.

On [XXX] my son [XXX] took the Nissan Sentra in for service at Coggin Nissan for a routine oil change. My son told me before I made the appointment for service that he thought that some of his fluids may be low because the steering felt weird. I requested that the steering and other fluids be checked as well as the tire pressure. After the service on the Sentra was completed service we were provided with their recommendation for additional services. They listed that the all four tires were worn and needed to be replaced which I thought was odd. They also recommended an alignment and replacing the brakes pads. There was no mention of any other services being required or any mention of a recall. Before leaving I asked the gentleman at the counter if the fluids and tire pressure had been checked and he said they were and that they do a multi point inspection on all vehicles being serviced. I also mentioned to the gentleman that my son was still having problems with his battery, and it was brand new. The gentleman stated that the batteries are not made the same as they used to be and don’t last us long. On Saturday [XXX], just a few days after having the car serviced my son [XXX] was taking his girlfriend home at around 10:30 pm and was driving on [XXX] before getting on [XXX]. He was having issues with his steering and was unable to steer, losing control but was somehow able to pull in to the parking lot of a bank. I leased a 2022 Nissan Sentra in February 2022. About two months after leasing the vehicle, I started having problems with the car battery. The car battery would die for no reason at all. I didn't leave anything on the battery would just die. I could be driving and stop and the battery would go completely dead. I've had to get my car jump-started by strangers and through my insurance company roadside so much so that my insurance company cancelled my roadside assistance coverage. I took it to the Nissan dealership several times and each time they said the battery was perfectly fine and they didn't find any issues. However, my battery kept dying and I would be stranded for long periods of times. This continued for months. It got to the point where I had to purchase jumper cables and then a portable charger. I finally contacted Nissan Consumer Affairs about the battery (Case# [XXX]) and they told me to take it to the dealership to be serviced. I made an appointment on 05/23/23 and this time the battery failed and they replaced the car battery. I wish I could say that this was the end of the problem but I was having the same issues with the new battery too. Same as before, several times. Once I stopped at gas station after getting gas the car wouldn't start the battery was dead and I had to get a jump. The car battery was still dying for no reason until another issue with the steering and tie rod occurred on [XXX]. Something in the vehicle is causing the battery to drain. This shouldn't be happening. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

We purchased the vehicle around December of 2021, around July of 2022 the vehicle started stalling while driving; at first it started at slow speeds driving in the neighborhood, then started happening about 4-5 times a week. Essentially, you could be driving at forward speeds of 10-50 mph, and the car would stall, intermittently a message would appear on the display with a warning sign and “Vehicle Stalled Stop Safely”. However, with each stall the warning may or may not appear. Then this started occurring at highway speeds up to 75 mph, with same intermittent warning. At time of stall you lose all power, steering gets stiff, and pressing accelerator does nothing. The warning only appears after the stall, so at that point you have lost power to the engine. We took the vehicle into Reed Nissan for service, they stated diagnostics showed no errors, we cannot help. Upon another stall, we took it to Universal Nissan, same comment, no diagnostic codes, so they cannot help, they did keep the car for the day to do an extended check, but said they found nothing. On the way home, the car stalled again. We contacted Nissan Consumer Affairs and we are still waiting to hear from Nissan. This vehicle is NOT safe, and will potentially cause an accident resulting in serious injury or death.

At approximately 1400 on 08/07/2022 just past the intersection on ayers and the SPID access road, I was driving at about 30 MPH with my grandfather in the front passenger seat and my younger sister in the rear driver's seat in my 2022 Nissan Sentra. When passing the turn-around in the left lane of the access road, I suddenly felt the car lean towards the driver's side and then the airbags deployed on the driver's side, pushing my vehicle into oncoming traffic, towards a truck passing in the right lane of the access road, and I also felt the car drifting towards oncoming traffic as well; at the time I felt the drift of the vehicle, I had not hit any objects or debris in the road and I did not collide with the curb. To avoid getting hit by the truck, I forced the wheel against the airbag and drift of the vehicle, scraping the front-driver's side tire on the curb while the truck passed. I then turned the wheel towards the right lane in an attempt to get put of the road and avoid getting hit or causing an accident. During the maneuver to the right lane, I pulled the vehicle as far onto the curb as I could because there was no marked breakdown lane, and the vehicle would not move anymore. I then assessed to ensure that my passengers were unharmed, but my grandfather complained of pain to his abdomen, my sister complained of a burn injury to her L upper arm and I was suffering from tinnitus. After confirming no one was severely injured, I called my parents and asked them to come and pick up my sister and my grandpa while I tried to figure out what I needed to do about the vehicle. While on the phone with my parents, a bystander came up to my car and asked if we were alright and told us that he had already called 911. We told him no one was badly injured. The throttle body has been replaced already, they reset my RPMs a different time, and just replaced the entire transmission. It's a brand new 2022 Sentra and only had 14 miles on it when I bought it in March. I should not have had the transmission replaced already on a brand new car. Even with the transmission being replaced the car is still wanting to stall out. This makes for very unsafe driving and could lead to an accident as well. It also has acceleration issues when pressing the gas pedal it doesn't want to go then out of no where speeds up real fast. The car has not been inspected by anyone except those at the Nissan dealership where it was purchased. There were no warning signs before the malfunction. In the middle of me driving the car slowed downed and would not allow me to accelerate to match the speed of the other vehicles around me (70 MPH). As I continued to push the gas the lights on the dash lit up and said malfunction.

ODI #11457486AIR BAGS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

Airbag warning light on after purchase. Took vehicle to dealer, repalced an airbag sensor, did not remedy problem. Needs airbag control module, that has an unknown eta for replacment. For issue with auto breaking and foward collision, was merging on freeway, and while accelerating, the dashboard warning lights activated, and the center dash communication area notified me of an error in the system

Chart Analysis

The blue line shows 80 total NHTSA complaints filed over 5 years, with the worst year being 2022 (22 complaints).

The amber reliability line averaged 90/100 across the vehicle's life — relatively stable, with the lowest point of 88/100 in 2024.

The recall (red dashed line) followed the first complaints by 1 year — a typical response window; neither unusually fast nor a pattern of denial.

Red dots on the amber line flag 2024, a year when complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
