The same components appear in both official NHTSA recalls and owner-filed complaints — a double-confirmed failure signal.
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.

Rust on roof by the windshield
Yesterday March 25th 2026 I went to work and parked my 2017 Toyota RAV4 and about 30minutes later it was on fire in the parking lot. The fire happened around the battery area
PCS brake has enormously engaged twice. 1. small branch fell off tree on a dirt road. brakes engaged and should not have and almost caused vehicle to slide off a 1000 foot cliff. 2. auto braked with my dog was in car and broke dogs' leg and cost a 2,000 dollar vet bill. brakes where not needed i could have easily just did a slight steering adjustment to avoid collusion. the braking prevented that and almost was also almost rearended overall, the autobrake can be disabled with a lot of work on various menus. but comes on when the car is restarted. I do this every time i restart the car. I suspect a glitch or a low voltage caused it to come back on. Also trying to always remember to do it is difficult to do. I consider this auto brake to be a huge safety risk and could cause loss of life. I am so scared by this and afraid to dive the car now. may have to take a total loss on the car I just bought. Toyota dealers said they cannot reprogram the car to prevent this serious safety risk
While my child was sitting in his carseat, the foam head support detached from the plastic casing where it is glued together. This is not the result of any action on our part and the seat has not been in car accident. The glue just gave out.
I am the driver's husband and the driver was the only one in the car. I assist her to file this report The accident happened around 6 pm on 12.28.2025 My wife was involved in a single car accident in a parking lot. She made a left turn at the intersection of 192nd ave and 3rd st, and then entered into the parking lot from the north entrance. The car hit the curb as she entered the parking lot. Then the car (RAV4) started accelerating by itself, and was out of control. She cannot stop the car. To avoid going straight and hit the shops at the other end of the parking lot, she turned the wheel to one side. She hit a light post and then hit something else. The vehicle flipped over and landed on its roof. The vehicle was totaled. She was trapped inside the car unable to free herself until the ambulance, tow truck and the police arrived. By God's grace, she did not hit any other car or person and she only suffered minor injury. She was taken to the emergency room at Peace Health, examined and released after 3 hours. If you look at the RAV4, you cannot believe that she only suffered minor injury. Praise the Lord. She is still mentally shaken up by this traumatic event. Looking at the pictures of the damage to the vehicle, the car must have been traveling at a very high speed and there is no way that the driver stepped on the gas pedal intentionally. The insurance Company is Liberty Mutual Claim# [XXX] -XX The vehicle is considered total loss by the insurance company. EDR was inspected but data in the EDR was not collected. I suspect this incident was not caused by the driver, The data in the EDR will tell the true story. I asked Liberty Mutual to retrieve the data from the EDR to prove that the gas pedal was not depressed by the driver. If the car accelerated without the driver stepping on the gas pedal, then the vehicle has safety issues. I am waiting for Liberty Mutual to retrieve the data. My 2017 Toyota RAV4 suddenly caught fire while it was parked in front of my home. The vehicle was turned off and had been parked for several minutes. Without any warning, flames started in the battery area and rapidly spread, resulting in a total loss of the vehicle. The Wylie, Texas Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. Component or System Involved: Exact cause UNKNOWN. Fire appears to have originated from the engine compartment. The remains of the vehicle are available for inspection upon request by NHTSA, Toyota, or investigators. Safety Risk: This was a severe and unexpected fire with no warning and posed a serious risk to my family, neighbors, and surrounding property. The fire could have spread to my home and other vehicles nearby. It created a dangerous situation for anyone in the area. Reproduction / Confirmation: The problem cannot be reproduced because the vehicle is a total loss. No prior mechanical issues or symptoms suggested this could happen. Inspection Status: The vehicle has been inspected by the Wylie Fire Department, and my insurance company has opened a case and is investigating. Toyota USA has also opened a case (# [INSERT CASE NUMBER]) and is expected to review the incident. No final cause has been determined yet. Warning Lamps or Symptoms: There were no warning lights, messages, unusual smells, smoke, or performance issues before the fire. The vehicle showed no signs of trouble prior to the incident. Additional Details: I later verified that my VIN is included in an open recall related to potential fire risk. I believe this issue may be connected, but the cause is still UNKNOWN pending investigation.
While driving the vehicle on an uphill stretch of highway with cruise control set at approximately 65 mph, the vehicle suddenly slowed down without warning. A distinct clunk was heard at the same moment. The cruise control system attempted to restore speed, and the engine became noticeably louder, but the vehicle struggled to return to the set speed. The driver tapped the brake to disengage cruise control and manually pressed the accelerator to resume normal speed. The trip was completed without additional events. After parking, the check engine light illuminated and the cruise control system became disabled on all subsequent drives. No warning indicators were present at the time of the initial failure, and there were no vehicles ahead that would have triggered the collision-avoidance system. Two days later, the vehicle became an intermittent no-start and eventually failed to start entirely. The vehicle was towed to a dealership for inspection. Technicians confirmed an electrical malfunction and reported that the multiplex ECU was likely experiencing an internal short. A parasitic draw test showed an abnormally high current draw of approximately 113 mA, which disappeared when the dome-light fuse and later the multiplex ECU were disconnected. The failure is intermittent and appears to involve an internal electrical short within the multiplex ECU. The sudden loss of cruise control function, abrupt deceleration, and subsequent intermittent electrical behavior created a safety risk, as the electrical malfunction occurred without warning while the vehicle was in motion. The issue was confirmed by a dealership service department.
My 2017 Toyota RAV4 XLE is experiencing unsafe behavior with the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). When driving around modest or slight turns, the ACC frequently loses tracking of the vehicle ahead and suddenly accelerates, then harshly brakes once it reacquires the vehicle. This creates a jerking motion and significantly reduces my confidence in the system. On one occasion while traveling approximately 45 miles per hour on a slight curve, the ACC began rapidly accelerating toward the vehicle in front of me as if no vehicle was there, forcing me to perform an emergency manual takeover and disengage the ACC to avoid a potential rear end collision. This issue is repeatable and appears to be related to how the ACC detects vehicles ahead while cornering. I am requesting that this behavior be investigated as a potential safety defect.
The rear lift hatch on my 2017 Toyota RAV4 is not working properly. It can be raised without a problem most of the time but not lowered without a lot of effort and time. It might go down several inches and stop before going back up again causing me to have to start the process all over again. It definitely could present a danger if someone tried to force it up or down or if they got a body part under it while it was doing its weird motions. Plus it would not be safe to drive it unless it lowered all the way and latched. I did take it in to my Toyota mechanic who acknowledged the problem and said the only remedy was to replace parts at a cost of somewhere between $1200 and $1300. Since the issue with my rear lift hatch started a year ago, I have read numerous complaints from other persons who are having the same issue. My mechanic confirms that he has had a number of vehicles brought to him with the same or similar issue. I strongly feel that there should be a recall. I have been a loyal Toyota owner for many years and over the years have steered numerous persons toward purchasing a Toyota. My Rav4 is available for inspection if that is necessary.
My lift gate hinges on my trunk have both bent, making my trunk unable to open. This is a known issue that they have a lawsuit against them for. This is available for inspection upon request. This vehicle has been inspected and diagnosed at a certified toyota dealership. No warning signs.
The brake system on my 2017 Toyota RAV4 LE has repeatedly failed to provide normal stopping power, even after the replacement of pads and rotors in July 2025. This poses a serious safety hazard and may indicate a defect in the braking system.
While driving on or around 6/5/25, an active recall on my vehicle caused damage to my battery connections causing my vehicle to completely shut off while driving on an highway exit ramp. I almost lost complete control of the vehicle. Thankfully, the vehicle turned back on and I was able to get the vehicle to safety. I had to get the car towed and repaired. The repair was directly related to the damage from an active recall issue being open without remedy for over 3 years on my vehicle. When I asked Toyota for reimbursement of under $200 they refused. This is a safety issue beyond the recall and I am concerned this is going to happen to someone else and there are going to be deaths. Toyota needs to stand by their recall too and may the financial aspect correct with me. Other members of the public need to be aware of the issues beyond their recall that can affect their cars and that Toyota is requiring them to be responsible for the damage that was caused while waiting on a remedy to the recall.

I have put 45,000 miles on the vehicle and have had complete brakes and rotors replaced 3 times. The caliper hangs up every time. As it gets closer to replacement time, I have experienced times when I did not think my car was going to stop. Brakes are spongy and I feel like pushing the pedal down is not enough to stop the car. I have experienced this three times, and thankfully it has stopped in time to avoid collision.

All wheel drive disengages while driving. It has disengaged several times while driving up a steep hill in the rain resulting in loss of control of vehicle. First time car skidded into a ditch. Warning on dash said return vehicle to dealer. Vehicle has been returned 3 times. They blame the problem on a defect in the emission control system which turns off the AWD system when a leak in the vapor control system is detected. Dealer first replaced the fuel filler cap. That worked for a couple of weeks, then something under the hood which worked a few days. Now the car is scheduled for a gasket on the fuel tank to be replaced for $1,500! I am all for controlling emissions to the environment, but it should not be at the cost of safety. A fix is needed to separate the AWD from the emission control system. SAFETY FIRST!

Illegal odometer rollback performed at Fred Haas Toyota in Houston, TX. It was at around 86k miles when it left DonMcGill Toyota, then Fred Haas reported around 46k miles. I bought the vehicle in Michigan. It now currently has 120k miles. I am worried it may actually have 160k. I bought the vehicle for around 20k with all the taxes and fees.
11/1/23 recall for battery safety. Hold down clamp issue. I received an interim recall notification in 2023. I have called Toyota twice and they still don’t have a remedy. It’s been over a year and this is a safety/fire hazard. It’s unacceptable they have not arranged for a remedy over a year later.

I was driving in the free way, my 2017 Rav4 started shaking and then stopped. I looked at my dash board it says: "Charging System Malfunction". I confirmed that I have 1/4 tank of fuel (reading the gauge). I had my car towed to a mechanic. Troubleshot it, found out that car was out of fuel but the fuel gauge said: 1/4 tank of fuel left. Reported the problem to Toyota. I was told they recalled other Rav 4's , different years but not the 2017.
i have a 2017 rav4 with less than 60k miles and the factory back up camera stopped working

I have made numerous complaints with no real update. This is severely affecting my business as my car cannot be rented out due to an active recall.

My Toyota RAV4 was involved in an accident. My vehicle was rear-ended on [XXX], at the corner of [XXX] and [XXX] in Tucson, AZ. Because it was during rush hour traffic, I moved my vehicle to an adjacent parking lot. It was while I was in this parking lot that I experienced brake failure and I was unable to stop my vehicle. As a result, my car hit a concrete pillar in the parking lot. This automatically stopped my vehicle and resulted in front end damage to my vehicle. 911 was dispatched and a sheriff was called to the accident scene. My car was towed to a tow yard before the Toyota collision center could begin work on estimating the amount of damages to my vehicle for the front-end and rear-end damage. My insurance company totaled my vehicle. I contacted Toyota to notify them of this brake failure. I was notified by a third party to contact you to report this incident. There has been a recall on my vehicle (2017 Toyota Rav 4) since November 2023. It is now August 2024. I have not been able to drive my vehicle this entire time and Toyota had done nothing to help me. There is a safety concern with the battery catching on fire, so I fear that this will happen while driving it, so I decided to pay for a rental car while I wait for a remedy. I have been paying for a rental car since November 2023 and Toyota still has not found a remedy. Please help.

As the driver was making a right hand turn, the dash lights came on and the vehicle lost power. The driver was able to get the vehicle to roll to a stop in the middle of the road after making the turn. As the driver exited the vehicle to check the engine, the passenger stated smoke could be smelled coming into the cabin. Before the hood could be disengaged, flames engulfed the engine compartment and began raising above the hood of the vehicle. The occupants of the vehicle activated 911 and emergency personnel extinguished the fire. The fire was contained to the engine compartment. The vehicle does have a recall for aftermarket batteries causing fires. The vehicle was purchased on December 13, 2023 at which time the recall wasn't communicated by the independent dealer. Currently, there isn't a known fix for the recall.

This is in regards to Safety Recall 23TA13 "Certain Model Year 2013- 2018 RAV4- Potential Vehicle Fire related to 12-volt battery". This recall was suppose to have a solution "late June" Toyota has removed that verbiage once that date passed and we still don't have a resolution. Every day I'm concerned my car might just catch fire when going over a speed bump or hitting a pot hole. This issue has been known about since last November.

About two months ago (March 2024), a smell started to appear in the vehicle cabin whenever the vehicle is being driven. It became stronger over time and is particularly strong when the HVAC system was being used. I took the vehicle to a reputed independent repair shop who diagnosed the problem as leaking AC coolant within the passenger cabin. They gave a printed diagnosis that I then shared with Toyota because the vehicle mileage is under 35,000, for assistance in fixing this problem. However, Toyota North America manager Michael from their Corporate Headquarters in Plano, Texas informed me today (May 24, 2024) that Toyota does not want to help me with the repair because I had been using an independent repair shop instead of the Toyota dealership for regular maintenance on my vehicle. I am stuck with a vehicle that cannot be used due to a strong odor of AC coolant which is potentially hazardous. An internet search reveals numerous others who have experienced similar issues with their RAV4 vehicles, so it would be in the interests of the general public to report this to the NHTSA so that action can be taken if this problem is found to be widespread.

Vehicle has less than 50,000 miles. We purchased this vehicle new. Both inner CV Axles are leaking grease. I expected, for a Toyota brand, for these parts to last much longer. It is difficult to know how long these have been leaking, but suspect for quite some time. Meaning these parts have been quite defective for possibly over a year or two. If these were to dry out without knowing, the CV could completely lock up--very dangerous.
Driving along, and all of sudden engine shuts down. Message indicated a malfunction, showed picture of battery, and indicated to put vehicle in park, and restart engine. Did so, and engine started. Dangerous situation, but luckily traffic was light.
The batter recall was not fixed till April 2024 as mentioned by Toyota.
Toyota RAV4 sunroof shattered for no reason. Car was sitting all day under my carport. I opened driver door. Needed to go back in the house. I closed the driver door. Sunroof shattered. If I had been in the car, or driving, it could have caused very serious cuts, or a deadly accident. No warning signs at all. Car is presently at Clearwater Toyota being fixed. Insurance (State Farm) has been contacted and is taking care of my claim.
I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED IN JULY OF 2023. THERE HAD BEEN A PERSISTANT CLUNKING NOISE IN THE REAR WHEN THE ROAD IS BUMPY ALONG WITH SOME STABILTY OR SWAYING FEELING. I HAD IT INSPECTED BY INDEPENDANT MECHANICAL SHOPS. I WAS ADVISED TO REPLACE THE SHOCK ABSORBERS AND THE STABILIZER LINKS WHICH I DID. THE RT REAR SHOCK ABOSBORBER WAS BAD. MARCH OF 2024 I TOOK A ROAD TRIP TO FLORIDA. FIRST LONG TRIP SINCE REPLACING THE PARTS. ON THE DRIVE DOWN I WAS BY MYSELF AND FELT AS THOUGH THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE WAS SWAYING BACK AND FORTH A LOT WORSE THAN BEFORE CHANGING THE PARTS LISTED ABOVE. I THOUGHT MAYBE IT WAS THE CONDITION OF THE ROADS. ON THE WAY HOME MY SON WAS FOLLOWING ME IN HIS VEHCLE. HE HAD TOLD ME THAT WHEN THE "SWAYING" FEELING IS HAPPENING THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE IS MOVING SEPARATE TO THE FRONT. THE CLUNKING SOUND IS STILL THERE AND THAT STABILITY ISSUE SEEMS TO HAVE WORSEN SINCE CHANGING THE SUSPENSION PARTS PREVIOUSLY LISTED. THERE WAS A POINT IN DRIVING HOME IN THE RAIN WHERE I DEFINITELY FELT THE ABITLITY TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE WAS DIFFICULT AND DANGEROUS. I WILL BE TAKING THE VEHICLE TO BE INSPECTED FURTHER. I'VE READ INFORMATION ON A TOYOTA FORUM THAT THERE ARE OTHER OWNERS EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE. I DO HAVE VIDIO AND YOU CAN SEE MY BODY ROCKING BACK AND FORTH IN THE DRIVER SEAT WHILE IT'S HAPPENING AND THE HOOD SWAYING BUT AM UNABLE TO UPLOAD IT.

I received this recall notice several months ago, and the letter stated that the remedy would be available in middle of 2024. I have had an inspection that confirmed I have a replacement battery, not an original. If there is a potential that the vehicle could catch on fire, it seems as though waiting until the middle of 2024 is an unreasonable amount of time.

While we were driving in the mountains, the wiring harness shorted and fried all 4 of our front bulbs, causing us to have no visibility while driving on unlit back roads in Colorado. Toyota has a known TSB for this issue but claims it's not a safety issue, and has a kit to repair the issue, charging us $500 to install the kit. When asking about this 2 different employees explained it was a design issue with the car. Why is this not a recall? How is frying all my headlights not a safety issue?

Fuel pump has small leak causing evaporative emissions codes and fuel to accumulate on top of the pump. This is the same concern which there is a recall for the 2018 models and beyond. They equipment is the same between the years and 2017 should be included in the recall as well.

Summary Some replacement 12-volt batteries of the size specified for the subject vehicles have smaller top dimensions than others. If a small-top battery is used for replacement and the hold-down clamp is not tightened correctly, the battery could move when the vehicle is driven with forceful turns. Safety Risk The movement could cause the positive battery terminal to contact the hold-down clamp and short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.
--Battery terminal/wiring for negative terminal came into contact with the metal hold down clamp --Caused a two alarm structure fire and loss of two vehicles --Current recall in place but remedy of situation not available until 2024 --Current recall in place --Maintenance required light appeared and owner took vehicle in for service two weeks prior to the incident
Battery became disabled without any warning. Safety of driving down the road and battery stop working is an issue. I replaced battery through no help of Toyota. Only person to inspect was person replacing battery.
When the passenger front airbag deployed in an accident, a coil about 3 inches long and an inch wide was ejected from the airbag compartment and info the face of the occupant. Minor injuries sustained but was near the eye. The coil became embedded in the skin and the coil had to be removed.
I have a 2017 RAV4 Hybrid XLE that I bought brand New. I have done all schedule maintenance on it. I was driving to an appointment on 15 November 2023 and the vehicle all the sudden jerked violently side to side throwing me off the road. I brought the car to the shop thinking an alignment or something. My whole rear subframe was cracked, and by the driver side rear wheel bolt it was broke straight through where the tow bar connects to the subframe. The mechanic said it was from rust from living in the Northeast, and the salt from the road during winter months. The Mechanic said Even though I took care of the vehicle this was going to happen anyways due to the subframe suspension parts that Toyota puts in the RAV4. Being flung into a ditch coming off a highway is a dangerous situation, and could of cost me my life because Toyota wants to save money and put in parts knowing that the rust problem will and could occur. I did my research, and found out this has been going on since 2007 and there have been recalls on models all the way up to 2012. If this is a known thing then why is Toyota being allowed to still make a weak subframe. Does someone have to die for this to be stoped. I’m am asking for a recall on all models of 2017 Rav4 hybrids and on to fix this problem. I am lucky to escape with minor injures, but maybe the next person isn’t. Something has to be done.
The contact owns 2017 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated while driving downhill at night with the headlights illuminated, the windshield darkened, and the contact lost visibility of the roadway. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed the contact that the windshield was compliant to safety standards. The contact stated that he had contacted an unknown dealer, who informed him that the failure was related to the design of the headlights. Additionally, the contact stated that while attempting to turn the key in the ignition switch, the key would not turn and remained stuck. The contact stated that he continuously attempted to turn the key while wiggling the steering wheel, and he was able to turn the key in the ignition switch. There was no warning light illuminated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened; however, no further assistance was provided. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000.
I was driving my car when no warning lights came on the car started stalling and turning off and then sparks started to come out from the hood. I was able to get the car in a parking lot and when the hood was opened the battery clamp part came off and welded itself to the hood of the car. I had it towed to Price Toyota where they said the battery was fine and that the bolt was missing. They put the same clamp back on and presumed someone tampered with it. The only place that ever touched the battery was them back in June of 2022 when the first recall came out and they said it was fine. I do not feel safe driving this car, especially on a highway if the car stalled like that, I would have been killed. A bolt just doesn't come loose and fall off. Something caused it to loosen and in turn put my life and my kids at risk.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that condensation was present inside the vehicle causing the carpet to become moist and damp. The contact stated that the front and rear carpets on the driver's and passenger's sides of the vehicle were moldy. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that the vehicle was parked. The contact stated that upon shifting to drive (D) and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle lurched, accelerated unintendedly, and crashed into the base of a lamp pole; however, the engine continued to rev loudly. The air bags did not deploy. The contact depressed the brake pedal and while attempting to reverse away from the lamp pole, the vehicle unintendedly accelerated and impacted a curb. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, and the vehicle operated as needed. The contact then pulled into a parking space. The contact did not sustain any injury. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to an autobody repair shop, where the contact was informed that the vehicle was significantly damaged. The contact was referred to an auto collision center. The vehicle was towed to the auto collision center where repairs were made. The vehicle was the taken to the dealer, where the EDR crash data report was read. The manufacturer sent a letter to the contact, informing her that the cause of the failure could not be determined. The contact followed up with the manufacturer, but no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 24, 971.
Related to a car accident when getting hit in the front my air bags didn’t deploy . Only the driver side was hit pretty bad . Another car accident related to a tree branch no air bag deploy . I was told that you have to be hit in a certain way to deploy the air bags . Hearing that makes me switch from a Toyota to a Kia . I have my toddler .
The contact owned a 2017 Toyota RAV4. The contact stated that upon arriving at her destination and returning to the vehicle a short time later, she found it engulfed in flames. A witness had already notified local emergency services, who were able to extinguish the fire. The fire marshal was unable to determine the origin of the fire but concluded that the cause was a non-suspicious mechanical failure with the vehicle. A police and fire report was filed, and no injuries were reported. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and declared a loss by insurance. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 89,000.
The car was sitting in the driveway and caught fire around 11:29am. The car had not been driven or moved from the driveway for at least 2 days, and is up to date on all maintenance. The fire inspectors hypothesize the fire began from the battery and spread. After Googling, I have learned that Toyota Rav 4s from 2013 to 2018 had a large recall; 1.8 million vehicles taken because of the battery catching fire randomly. The remains of the vehicle are in the driveway of the residence. Both the police and fire department came to the scene. The safety of others was put at risk because it is only luck that nobody was in the car, or going to drive the vehicle as it caught fire randomly, bringing the residents of the home and owner of the car in extreme risk from both the fire and any explosions, damage to the house, and damage to others.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 mph, fire was detected near the engine and front of the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The fire department extinguished the fire. There were no reported injuries, crash,es or air bag deployment. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent towing lot. The contact called the local dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000.
POWER STEERING IS LOCKING UP, NOT WANTING TO TURN.
Multiple times when coming to a stop the vehicle is stopped and then the brake pedal depresses further on its own while at the same time the engine roars and the vehicle lunges forward about 4 feet. It almost put me in front of oncoming traffic. Also I felt like I had no control over the brakes. It happened 4 times and also did this while I was parallel parking and almost slammed into the parked car ahead of me. It was in the shop last month. The brake calipers were cleaned and the brake lines were bled. This vehicle only has 40000 miles on it. I took it back to Toyota again today to see if they can once again try to figure out what is causing this. When it surges forward it sounds like if your foot was on gas in park, only my foot was on the brake Im afraid to drive it.
225/65R17. I purchased 4 new tires on 02/24/23. On 6/27/23, I found my driver's rear tire was completely flat. I had the 'donut' put on and took to the dealers. There was a 'bubble' around the rim and the tire was replaced. The dealer explained it was likely due to hitting a curb or pothole which I took exception to as I had done neither. On 7/31/23, my passenger-side rear tire was almost flat and there was again a bubble near the rim. As well the front passenger tire looked mis-shapen. This time, I called a tow truck. The dealer refused to acknowledged that was a manufacturing issue and not a road hazard. Although many Continental tires were recalled, they said this wasn't one of them. They did not contact Continental only their service provider for road hazard. Replacing only the passenger rear tire was not a reasonable option. I chose to replace all 4 tires of another brand rather than fool around with what could be an exploding tire on the highway. Needless to say, no more continental tires for me and I will not use that Toyota dealership again either.
Side Airbag failure: (all air bags didn't deploy) As I was making a left hand turn, My vehicle was hit in my drivers rear quarter, just behind the gas cap. The impact spun the car over 90 degrees, causing me to hit the left side of my head against the side drivers window, causing a concussion and cervical strain. No airbags in the vehicle were deployed, yet the car was totaled. The car that hit me was traveling at a high rate of speed and the impact totally destroyed that vehicles front end displacing the engine. In my opinion the airbags malfunctioned due to the water damage caused by the rail leaks common to that vehicle (which I had the dealer fix previously). If the airbag in question was operational I would not have hit my head. (yes, I was wearing my seatbelt.)
Vehicle experienced an unexplained acceleration while at a complete stop with foot on the brake. This has happened several times.
I was in the third, leftmost, lane on an urban highway coming out of a gentle turn going about 40-45 miles an hour. There was a loud metallic clank or bang and the vehicle pulled sharply to the right. I hit the brakes hard, the vehicle crossed two lanes and came to rest on the shoulder about 18 inches from the concrete barrier, having turned about 170 degrees. There was very little traffic and so there was no accident or injuries but had there been normal traffic it would have been a disaster. There were no indicator lights showing any problem, I examined the tires and underside and could not see any damage. I was able to drive away from the site. I took the car in to my regular Toyota dealer (Toyota of Lincoln Park, they perform all my service) and they test drove it, examined it closely, checked the computer, and could find nothing wrong. No other parties have examined the car. However, I would be afraid to drive it and need to dispose of the car without exposing anyone else to what might happen.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the contact struck a sign on the side of the road causing front-end damages to the vehicle and the air bags did not deploy. The contact suffered a major injury to the chest from the seat belt and back pains where she was taken to the hospital and had to seek physical therapy. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer that stated that the damages were not severe for the air bags senor to deploy. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 48,408.
I was slowing at a stop sign and the car suddenly accelerated. My foot was not on the gas pedal but it continued to accelerate causing and accident at an intersection.
Even when properly aimed, with new headlight bulbs, visibility is poor at night. I recently had an incident while driving in town at less than 25 miles hour where I almost hit a deer that I could see on the side of the street, and this is actually not the first of many such incidents. I feel unsafe driving the vehicle at night due to the poor amount of light put out by the headlights. Toyota should offer to retrofit these with LEDS for people with issues. It's downrigtht scary, especially on poor lit streets or driving on the highway.
Vehicle surges when accelerating since it was new. Throttle goes dead where engine idles but now power at all. Does it from a standing start, does it on hills and when merging onto a freeway. Now it happens on cruise control, when set on 75 mph engine loses power and slows down to 45 for a few minutes then shutters and speeds back up to 75. This past month if you let the fuel get down to 1/4 of a tank it will happen all the time. On interstate this week it happened and slowed to 35 mph and wouldn't go any faster until more gas was added. No check engine light ever. Dealer has checked twice and says no codes found and can't get it to happen it's a intermittent problem. We almost got hit by a semi on the interstate this week week due to this happening and I was unable to get out of his way because I no throttle response at all.... But engine was idling that all. Had to turn the engine off for 45 minutes before it would have any throttle response at all. Drove down the emergency lane to the next exit and filled up with gas. Engine surged for next 60 miles home. This is a huge problem! I am going to my local Toyota dealer tomorrow to talk with them again about this problem. If they give me the run around again I am going to file a lawsuit against Toyota and the dealership!
As I drive about 70 MPH, the ABS and the brake lights come on and the car is momentarily out of control. As I grabbed the tearing and reduce the speed dramatically, the system correct itself and I am able to continue driving at a very low speed.
A fire occurred in the engine compartment of the vehicle while the vehicle was parked in a garage with the engine off. Fire patterns and physical evidence suggest the fire originated as a result of a high resistance connection between the positive battery terminal and conductor to the power distribution center. The battery is original. The vehicle has not had any repairs beyond normal maintenance. The vehicle was not involved in a crash.
Car will not start. Doesn't seem to be the battery. Got a jump start but same warning light illuminated.
Both of my headlights burned out at the same time. I was driving on a rural mountain highway at about 7:30pm and was using my adaptive headlights. They were working fine, I noticed no issues, until they both burned out at the same time. It was dangerous, there was no shoulder to pull over on, and a steep drop-off i couldn't see and no warning whatsoever I'd be in pitch black dark in the middle of the road. Thankfully there was very little traffic, it could have been much worse. My dash camera captured the event and I've shared it to YouTube. https://youtu.be/plJlQYcA8-A No indicator lights ever came on, before or after. I had to drive the last hour to my destination through the mountains in the dark with only fog and running lights. I had been to the dealership for scheduled interval maintenance just the week before. A multi point inspection evidently didn't catch that both headlights were about to go out at the same time. Bulbs? Wiring? Relay? Not sure what happened.
I WAS DRIVING COMING FROM THE STORE WITH MY GRAND KIDS AND MY TRUCK STALLED ON ME SO I TURNED IF OFF AND TURNED IT BACK ON BUT IT KILLED ON ME AGAIN AND THIS POINT MY GRAND BABY SAID HE SMELLED SMOKE SO I LOOKED UP AND THE HODD WAS SMOKING SO I GOT MY BABIES AND MYSELF OUT THE TRUCK AND RAN TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET AND THERE I WATCHED MY TRUCK START A FIRE SO I CALL THE POLICE AND THE FIRE PEOPLE , MY TRUCK WAS TOTALED I CONTACTED TOYOTA MAIN OFFICE TO LET THEM KNOW THEY SENTED OUR THEIRE PEOPLE TO LOOK AT THE TRUCK AND DECIDED THAT IT WAS NOT THERE FAULT AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO FOR ME , MY TRUCK CAUGHT ON FIRE I DID NOT SET IT ON MY FIRE MY GRAND KIDS WERE IN THAT TRUCK WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPEN HAD HE NOT SMALLED SMOED AND IT DID NOT STALL BUT CAUGHT ON FIRE WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT . Vehicle suddenly started to develop shuddering episodes that lasted 2-3 seconds, while driving at low speeds 20-50 MPH and between 1000-2000 RPM. Condition is intermittent, usually when the engine is hot and increasingly becoming worse and frequent. Took vehicle to local Toyota dealer and they diagnosed it with a malfunctioning Torque Converter and recommended replacement. No codes were reported during diagnosis. Toyota dealer mechanic promptly recognized problem as he encountered similar problems with other vehicles of same model. Mechanic reported of a known recall for models from 2009 to 2015, but not for later models. Transmission Control Module was reset by dealer's mechanic and condition improved but not resolved. Owner contemplating replacement of malfunctioning part to avoid catastrophic damages to vehicle's transmission and potential uncontrollable vehicle's behavior while driving.
This and other year model RAV4s have a known and reported issue of the tail light lenses not being properly sealed with and connected to the tail light housing. This is allowing water intrusion into the tail light and electrical system and vehicle body. This is the case with both of my tail lights on my 2010 RAV4. Water has been entering the tail lights where the lens is not sealed to the housing. The lack of plastic welding / sealant can be seen at the lens and housing. Water is intruding corroding the electronics and electrical connectors as well as portions of the body. The lenses are becoming deteriorated and discolored due to the water intrusion diminishing the effectiveness of the rear lighting. Of course, this is a safety issue as well as the corrosion of the electrical connectors and electronics within the tail light that may cause them to completely fail. Toyota knows of these issues but refuses to address them.
Went out to the vehicle one day to run an errand and the warning light came on and said Electrical System Malfunction. I took it into the repair facility and was told at first it was the battery then was told no it's the alternator. I remembered I had an extended warranty on the vehicle so I took it into the Dealership. They said it's the Wire Harness and it's not covered due to corrosion. I have put less than 20, 000 miles on this vehicle. This needs to be addressed by the Manufacturer Toyota. I am asking NHTSA to do a recall on this vehicle.
We owned 2 Toyota cars, highlander and RAV4( this is our second RAV4), we bought both time new, the first one after one year has some break and noise issues and my wife did not like it and we traded and got 2017 RAV4, from her experience, she did not wanted Toyota but different car, though I told her that it has longevity and she should get another Toyota and she agreed and gotten RAV4 2017 new car. However, this RAV4 cars have issues and my wife was right and I was wrong and will never buy RAV4 again. Today, in Portland, there is rain and raining and that small snow also now start melting with the rain, I parked my wife car in our driveway and went in, after lunch came back to drive, saw water was dripping, immediately looked for the sun roof locks, it was completed closed, reach my hand to the place where is the leak is coming, its from headliner areas by driver side where sun visor located. This is 2017 RAV4 with 26k mileage, I drop the car by the dealer where did we bought this car, their tech will be back on Monday, I cannot wait what they have to say for this obvious defect from the factories, I read more about it and there are a lot of this issues with RAV4 and needs factory attention for recall. MY MAIN CONCERN IS NOW: The real danger with this roof leak is not so much cosmetic , the real danger is damage to the airbags over the door and corrosion to the wiring harness, it should warrant recall!!
I have attached a letter that I wrote Toyota but did not mail. Vechicle is a 2017 Rav Hybrid. We bought it in CA April 2021 and it had 28230 miles. Car went to Renton WA in August, 2021. Vechicle was serviced a couple of times, but in October 2022, dealer gave us a bill for $9700 due to a faulty wire halter. The Toyota people said the car is out of warranty. Please read the letter with lots more details. Thanks.
The contact owned a 2017 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that while the wife was driving approximately 35 MPH, the odor of smoke was present inside the vehicle. After stopping to inspect the vehicle, smoke and flames were seen coming from under the hood. The fire department was called to the scene to extinguish the flames. During the incident, the vehicle was destroyed and later towed away. A fire report was taken at the scene. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000.
The door lock actuators failed I was locked out of my car
While driving at about 55mph on an open highway, the moon roof exploded. There was a loud explosion inside the car by my right ear. The noise was deafening and distracting and caused a momentary loss of concentration on driving, a situation that was very dangerous and could have resulted in an accident with serious injury. I immediately pulled over and checked the tires, the body and underneath the vehicle, finding nothing. When I began driving again, I heard a loud wind noise and other strange noises above me. I started to open the cover of the moon roof, but shards of glass fell on me, so I closed it again. Pulling over again, I climbed on the door threshold to look at the roof of the car. Unbelievable! It looked like a volcano with the glass pointing upwards around a big hole. Toyota Corp. is claiming it was caused by an outside source. That is definitely not true. I was in the car, nothing landed on the roof. The highway I was on has no bridges, no overpass, no multi-story buildings, no schools or no place that would enable someone to drop or throw a large item on top of a car. And, there was nothing on the inside cover except broken glass. The glass on the roof was definitely pointing upwards. The result of my research on exploding roofs shows that this problem has affected multiple car brands and multiple sun/moon roof manufacturers. I'm asking the NHTSA to help protect USA drivers. If there had been a warning that the roof could suddenly explode while I was driving, I definitely would have selected a car without a glass roof. If the cover had not been closed, I would have been sprayed with glass in addition to the loud blast. Because this is a major safety issue, I'm begging the NHTSA to look into the problem and at the very least immediately issue warnings so drivers of vehicles with sun/moon roofs will be aware that this could happen. It would be much better to find out what defect is causing this to happen before anyone is killed! The consumer stated he feels that moonroof exploding should be reinvestigated and deemed as a safety issue.
While driving the vehicle I smelled something burning and saw smoke coming out of the air vents. I immediately pulled to the side of the road and got out. I noticed fire and smoke coming from under the hood. I called 911 and the Fire Dept. arrived to put the fire out. It was towed to a nearby storage yard until the insurance company could be notified. After talking with and submitting photos to the insurance company the vehicle was considered a total loss. We are waiting to hear back from the insurance company concerning our claim. Upon researching engine fire related to defective battery in these vehicles I learned that almost 2 million 2013-2018 Toyota RAV4 have been affected. I am just thankful everyone was able to get out of the vehicle safely before it caught on fire.
Front brakes needed replacement at 40k miles. 24k miles later, I'm being told they need replacement again. At May 2022 ispection the measurements were 11/32 for all four brakes. Less than 6 months & less than 5k miles later, the right front is at 6/32, left front 9/32, rear are 11/32 & 10/32. I'm being told the right front pads & rotors are bad and the discs(?) are extremely rusty. How does this happen so quickly? Forums I've read say this is an issue with many 2017 RAVS. Apparently, Toyota used low-grade rotors on that model and year. I had complained of a slight grinding noise coming from the front wheels on several occasions only to be told they can't find anything. I've had no safety issues yet but this ongoing problem is unacceptable and may eventually result in a collision.
Although just aligned, steering consistently pulls to the right.
My vehicle is on it's 3rd replacement in less than 5 years because it randomly fails. It will not start. This is after I had recently taken my vehicle in for service, where the service technicians have checked the battery performance as "Good". There have never been any warnings before my vehicle would not start. Absolutely no symptoms prior to the failure. When I pressed the start button, the vehicle gave no indication that it would turn over. It's been a terrible inconvenience and very unsettling, because now that it's happened to me twice. The original battery and now the replacement in less than 5 years. I'm not sure when it will happen again.....it's so unpredictable. This last time, I was stuck in a parking lot and had to be towed to the nearest Toyota dealership.
While traveling around 40 mph on a roadway another vehicle ran a stop sign approximately 2 feet in front of my vehicle. This vehicle came onto the roadway from a side road at a sustained speed with no braking. I swerved to avoid impact and went over an embankment. The vehicle sustained extensive damage to the front and underneath. It is a total loss. The airbags did not deploy during the accident. There were also serious injuries to the driver and passenger. The driver sustained a broken neck in 4 places. The passenger sustained massive hematomas, a fractured arm, and 7 fractured ribs in the chest and separated sternum. There were no warning lights or messages displayed. An inspection has not been performed on the airbag system. The vehicle is currently located at the insurance company's salvage yard.
While driving the vehicle, the sun roof glass shattered. The cover of the roof was closed, so no glass spilled into the car, but could have been dangerous if it the cover was open.
6 months after warantee expired passenger front door lock actuator failed. Dor can only be locked /unlocked from manual rocker lock inside door. Electrick lock doesnt function. Within 6 months of that failure, drivers door developed same problem. Door can only be locked from inside and unlocked from outside with key.
Discoloration/fogging of tail light lens on driver side. Picture uploaded.
The driver owned a 2017 Toyota Rav4. The contact called on behalf of her son who was driving approximately 35 MPH when he lost control of the steering due to the functionality of the steering wheel and accidentally crashed into a pole. There were no warning lights. The 2 front and 1 side air bag deployed. The police and fire and ambulance arrived on the scene. The driver was transported to the hospital where he received a CT scan for his injury. There was a police report. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to a salvage yard. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 76,000
On Saturday, May 14, 2022, my vehicle burned. and has since been totaled. The car had been trouble-free since I bought it in 2018. I was so pleased with it that I had just paid off the balance on the loan the week before because I wanted to keep it for 10 years. Prior to it burning, I had just driven it a couple miles for the first time in 2 weeks (it had been parked in a friend's garage). There were no warning lights visible during that time. I got out of the car for 3 minutes and was about to get back in when I noticed white smoke coming out of the hood. Within 30 seconds the hood had become engulfed in flames. The entire front and interior of the car was destroyed in the blaze, which the Fire Department had to extinguish. No one was injured, but two cars on either side were damaged by the fire. The car had last been serviced by Headquarter Toyota in Miami on January 22, 2022. They had not done the government-recommended inspection of the engine area during the servicing.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) warning light would activate even though the air pressure in the tires were normal. The contact indicated that the failure also occurred immediately after refueling. No further information was available. The cause of the failure was not determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 30,000.
The contact owned a 2017 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated while driving at 10 MPH, the vehicle stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact veered to the side of the road. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle after several attempts. The contact saw smoke coming out from underneath the hood of the vehicle and immediately exited the vehicle. The contact then saw flames coming out from underneath the hood of the vehicle. The contact was able to extinguish the fire with the assistance of the fire department. There were no injuries sustained. A fire department report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot where it was totaled. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000.
Vehicle automatically slows down and shakes violently. We had it checked out at a Toyota dealership and they didn’t find any problems with the vehicle when they performed a diagnostic check. It continues to happen when vehicles is on the fwy. EV light appears on screen flashing on and off.
My mechanic showed me that the axle shaft assembly on my Toyota RAV4 is leaking grease and that, if not repaired soon, could be a safety issue when driving.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated while driving at 55 MPH, the vehicle started making a rumbling sound and was also shuddering. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact veered to the side of the road. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who test drove the vehicle, and the tires were balanced and rotated; however, the failure reoccurred while driving. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the engine block stabilizers needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the torque converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure had become significantly worse while driving between 25-30 MPH and 45-50 MPH. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 94,000.
on a nice clear spring day in california, driving on the 101 freeway my 2017 toyota rav4 xle sun roof just Exploded..no trucks around me...and no overpasses...it just exploded outwards i belive....no warning .....could have very easily cause a serrious accident/injury...some glass dropped on driver/passanger...dome rolloed off top of the car.
The axle broke while I was driving. I was on CA HWY 101 NB, it was a day after the rain so I was careful not to speed. As I was heading towards a decline the car made a loud pop sound that came from the rear left side. I looked back because my initial thought was the tire popped but as I looked at my rear view mirror the car veered rapidly to the left headed straight to the median. Safety at risk: I tried to break but it seemed like the breaks were not responding well. I turned the wheel to not hit the median and the car turned completely, facing traffic and sliding to the right side of the freeway where it stopped on its side. The car was checked and we have a letter from Toyota saying the part broke due to speeds over 80 mph. But I was not driving over 80, and and axle is probably not supposed to break at that speed. There were no warning lights, or symptoms. My vehicle seemed completely healthy.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota RAV4. The contact stated that occasionally the vehicle would not immediately start-up, or would take multiple attempts before starting. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, but the cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 66,000.
The shifter makes a irregularly rough shift out of park . It is available for inspection if possible. The safety of me or passengers has not been compromised. The problem has not been confirmed from any dealer or manufacturer. The shifter component has not been inspected or checked to confirm the issue or potential issue. There was no warning light to indicate a issue.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota RAV4. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the instrument cluster failed, which caused the speedometer and RPM gauge to be inoperable. Additionally, the power steering assist failed, and the steering wheel was locked up. The failure occurred on four separate occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and Toyota of Brookfield (20655 W Capitol Dr, Brookfield, WI 53045) however, the dealers could not duplicate the failure. Toyota of Brookfield informed the contact that there was a Manufacturer's Campaign Number: 21TG01 (Electrical System) associated with the VIN. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at Toyota of Brookfield. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.
I purchased my 2017 Rav-4, brand new off the lot the end of 2017. On October 2018 my car battery was dead. NO prior indications of problems, No indicator lights. I had it towed to the dealership, they stated it was a bad cell in the battery and installed a new one. Then on Nov. 2020, once again had a dead battery, again no prior warning. I called and got a jump, took the car back to the dealership, they checked it and said I must have left a light on all night because it was completely drained. They put a 3.5 hour charge on it, check the charging system and said all was fine. Then again on 10-19-21 the battery was dead again. At that point I was pissed and just went to the parts store to get a new battery. Upon opening my hood to replace the battery I found so much corrosion on the top of the battery, cleaned it off the best I could, upon disconnecting the battery positive terminal I found the post had lifted out of the battery causing the corrosion all over the battery. I went to the dealership, they told me they were not responsible for corrosion, they did what they call a corrosion maintenance to clean the terminal, offered me a $55 credit because they said the battery was 3 years old and they would have to prorate it. Which they hadn't as of 10-23-2021. It was a 84 month battery. While there they also said my oil pan gasket was seeping and would need replaced and the front brakes will need replaced soon. I haven't even had the car 4 years, it has 15,300 miles approximately. Definitely some problems with these cars and Toyota needs to take responsibility . I bought a extended warranty, but seems none of this is covered as they say it is normal wear and tear. Never had to replace brakes on a car less then 4 yrs old. After reading all the complaints, I guess I am lucky my car didn't catch fire.
The door does not lock/unlock when you press the button to unlock doors. The individual lock on inside needs to be manually pressed to lock and unlock. My Passenger side went about two years ago. And now the lever on my driver side is not working.
WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE ALL FRONT HEADLAMPS FAILED SIMULTANEOUSLY LEAVING ME IN THE DARK. DEALER NEXT DAY FOUND BOTH FRONT HEADLAMP BULBS HAD BOTH LOW AND HIGH BEAM FILAMENTS BURNED OUT! THIS MAY HAVE BEEN A CATASTROPHIC ACCIDENT BUT FOR MY FOG LIGHTS. HOW CAN ANYONE FEEL SAFE IN A VEHICLE IN WHICH ALL LIGHTS MIGHT FAIL WHILE DRIVING UNLIT CURVY ROADWAYS?
Upon starting the car at night both headlights failed to go on. Only the fog lights would work. Headlights failed in both auto and manual mode.
While driving around 70-75 mph, I took my foot off gas pedal to coast, the "EV" light came on and off for about "1/2 - 1" second several times. I experienced a strong shaking, vibration, and a feeling that the car may be broken out by itself. It was very noticeable and troubling. If I waited the second for the light to go off while coasting, then no problems. It is not easy to recreate it constantly, so when I tried to show the problem to some mechanics. It could not appear. I have found many same complaints online from many years ago. But it seems no solutions yet. Dealers usually says if they cannot see/experience it, they cannot consider it is an issue. So it seems no one takes any actions to try to solve this issue.
I bought my Rav4 in September of 2017 brand new and within 6 months I had a dead battery needing replacement so I replaced it via AAA. Since then, I have had the battery replaced an additional 3 times! I always serviced my car at the dealer and took very good care of it. Then after 50k miles, I started having odd lighting issues…both headlight bulbs had to be replaced within 3 weeks of each other and one high beam bulb, and then my tail lights went out! Then I would occasionally have trouble starting the car and with a natural gas smell, rotten eggs. Which could be a catalytic converter or fuel pump issue but can also be the battery. Well, my Rav was in the driveway with a dead battery and with no tail lights and had been sitting there for a month since I mainly drive our Sienna. My Rav just caught on fire and was completely destroyed. No one was hurt but if the Sienna had been out there it would’ve caught on fire and it burned the garage door…Rav totaled! I also had a very expensive brake job last year and think those are faulty too. But this fire….was bad and I can’t get a car of equal value with what i received for the total loss. What is Toyota doing about this? Less than 4 yr old well taken cared of Rav 4 XLE that I paid cash for and now can’t even replace with a Corolla! There were no warning lights ever, not even for the dead battery’s. And less than 6 months prior to the fire, it was serviced at my Toyota dealer and they said all was good. The firemen that came also told me that Rav4 fires have increased and I searched on Consumer Reports and sure enough…what was explained was a carbon copy of my experiences. Thank god no one was in it when it started, but the house could’ve caught fire as well. Toyota needs to do something for those of us who had their cars totaled due to fire…just the time invested finding a replacement is worth something….not to mention the time vested researching vehicles before I bought the Rav4. plus the depreciation, etc….
Recurring Problems with AWD Malfunction, Engine Light On. Contacted Toyota two month ago, No reply from Toyota; Description of Complaints: On March 19, 2021, I was driving my Rav4 (VIN[XXX] ) to go to Toledo Ohio. During the driving, the AWD System Malfunction/2WD Mode Engaged and the Engine Light came on (see attached). Interestingly, the warning lights came on and off three to four times and each time I felt a drag/hesitation as if the gear was changed from 4WD to 2WD (Exhibit 1) . It advised me to visit the Toyota Dealer. After arriving Toledo, OH I visited Jim White Toyota Dealer next morning and explained the situation. The dealership was very cordial and helpful. Unfortunately, they did not record any malfunctioning Code (Exhibit 2). While returning home on March 21, 2021, the AWD warning light did not come on. A few days later, these warning lights came on again, and that forced me to visit the local Toyota Dealer, Fitzgerald, for inspection again. They diagnosed the problem to Code P0456 (Exhibits 3-4). This code refers to “…that there is a small leak in the evaporative emission control system.” Today (05/31/2021), after two repairs at Fitzgerald Toyota, Gaithersburg, The "AWD malfunction came back on with the engine light on again. The code reads: P043Eand F;P2401,P2402 and P2419. Please ask Toyota to address this problem and make it as part of recall to fix this problem. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
We purchased this Toyota RAV4 car new in 2017, for our daughter. It has driven problem free, until the car was 3 years and 3 months old. At 3 years and 3 months from purchase, in October, 2020, my daughter took it into the Toyota dealership, in the morning, for a routine oil change. She hasn't had any problems with the car, and has only had it serviced at the Toyota dealership. She drove it in, and got a ride home, and was waiting for the call to come pick up her car. In the afternoon, the dealership called to say her 2017 RAV4 have severe engine damage from the batter exploding, while it had been sitting at the dealership. They told her it was 3 months past the warranty, and Toyota wouldn't pay for any repairs. It sat at Toyota for a week, until our auto insurance representative went and looked. He called us to say that: " he had never seen soo much engine damage." He told us that our auto insurance was -- "totaling the car, that the engine was unrepairable, and that they were going to take it to the auto dump." Our insurance company hauled it away, and determined its remaining value and paid us, in October, 2020. My daughter chose a new car, we purchased it for her, with the insurance money, covering part of the purchase. It cost us thousands more, to cover the cost of the new replacement car. I told my daughter that we had bought her a "dud of a gift", and would pay for the new car. Our auto insurance confirmed what the dealership said, that the battery had exploded.
ON RAINY DAYS, WHEN I AM STANDING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, AND STARTING TO GET OUT OF THE GREEN LIGHT, MY CAR BECOMES UNSTABLE, AS IF IT WERE GOING TO SKID. THIS HAPPENS WHENEVER THE STREET IS WET. REPORT THIS PROBLEM FROM THE FIRST INSPECTION OF THE CAR. AT THAT TIME THEY CHANGED AN AXIS, BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTS
VEHICLE ONCE STATIONERY PUT BACK IN DRIVE AND TRY GOING AHEAD MAKES A NOISE FROM THE FRONT RIGHT CV AXLE HAD TAKEN IT TO STEVEN TOYOTA VA, THEY CAME BACK SAYING IT'S A KNOWN ISSUE THROUGH TOYOTA
THE VEHICLE IS MAKING A LOUD NOISE. WHEN I GO TO TURN IT MAKES A CRACKING NOISE.
TOOK MY 2017 RAV4 LE TO TOYOTA FOR SHAKING/VIBRATING AT STOPLIGHT WHEN FULLY WARMED UP. IT DOES THIS EVERY TIME I STOP AT A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. THEY CANNOT FIND ANY FAULTS OR CODES RELATED TO THE ISSUE AND CLAIM EVERYTHING IS NORMAL. THE VEHICLE FEELS LIKE IT WILL STALL AT EVERY LIGHT. HOWEVER THEY DID TELL ME THEY WERE ABLE TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE ON ANOTHER VEHICLE ON THE LOT WITH SIMILAR MILEAGE, BUT THEY TELL ME THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. SEEMS TO BE ON ALL 2017 RAV4 LE'S NOT JUST MINE.
THREE DAYS AGO, I PARKED MY 2017 RAV4 LIMITED IN MY DRIVEWAY, STOPPED THE ENGINE, GOT OUT, LOCKED THE DOOR AND WENT IN TO MY HOUSE. SEVERAL HOURS LATER I WENT OUTSIDE AND FOUND MY RAV4 RUNNING. FOR HOW LONG I DON'T KNOW. I THOUGHT I MAY HAVE DONE SOMETHING INCORRECT. NOW BEING VERY CAREFUL ABOUT SHUT DOWN PROCEDURE, YESTERDAY I PARKED THE RAV4 IN THE SAME DRIVEWAY. TWO HOURS LATER, I WENT OUSIDE TO CHECK AND AGAIN FOUND THE RAV4 RUNNING, WITH THE LIGHTS ON. I FOUND SEVERAL REPORTS ON-LINE ABOUT OTHERS HAVING THE SAME EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR RAV4S. I CALLED SEVERAL TOYOTA DEALERS TO REPORT THE INCIDENT AND SEE IF THEY HAD EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM WITH OTHER CUSTOMERS. NONE DID. IT APPEARS THAT I CAN'T BE CONFIDENT THAT MY RAV4 WILL BE WHEREVER I PARKED IT WHEN I RETURN TO IT.
WHILE STOPPED AT A STOPLIGHT, MY RAV4 COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND THE DASHBOARD FLASHED THE WARNING "CHARGING MALFUNCTION; SEE OWNER'S MANUAL". I TOOK MY RAV4 TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY RAN A FULL INSPECTION AND FOUND ZERO ISSUES. IT HAS HAPPENED ONCE SINCE, AS WELL. I BELIEVE IT TO BE RELATED TO THE OVERARCHING TOYOTA RAV4 BATTERY/ELECTRICAL ISSUE AS LISTED IN OTHER COMPLAINTS.
ALL EXTERIOR LIGHTS: HEADLIGHTS, FOG LIGHTS, BRAKE LIGHTS TURN SIGNALS ETC. HAVE ALL BEEN REPLACED AT LEAST TWICE IN LESS THAN 4 YEARS AND 75K MILES OF USE. I WAS TOLD THAT PERHAPS THE PROBMEM IS THAT THE AREA AROUND TBE BULBS IS TOO SMALL CAUSING THEM TO OVER HEAT, WHICH COULD BE DANGEROUS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER PARKING AND EXITING THE VEHICLE, SHE NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE ENGINE THEN THE ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND THE INSURANCE COMPANY DEEMED IT TOTALED. THE CONTACT INFORMED THE DEALER JAY WOLFE TOYOTA OF WEST COUNTY ( 14700 MANCHESTER RD, BALLWIN, MO 63011) AND THE MANUFACTURER OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND SUDDENLY THE BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY. I COULD NOT STEER OR MOVE. AFTER A MOMENT I WAS ABLE TO START THE CAR AND PROCEED HOME. THAT WAS THE ONLY TIME IT HAS HAPPENED AND IT OCCURRED IN OCTOBER OF 2020. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC A FEW DAYS LATER AND THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM. INVOICE IS ATTACHED.
WHILE I WAS AT MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP THEY LET ME KNOW MY BATTERY KEPT COMING BACK WEAK . I HAVE ALSO NOTICED HOW MY CAR SEEMS TO ALMOST STALL OUT SOMETIMES WHILE DRIVING . IT HASN'T BUT THIS MAKES ME VERY NERVOUS WHILE DRIVING
PLEASE SEE ATTACHED SHEET FOR ALL THAT HAS HAPPENED SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR. I'VE HAD TO REPLACE THE BATTERY 2 TIMES IN 3 YEARS AS WELL. I HAVE NEW BATTERY AND IT BECAME CORRODED FAST. MY CAR KEPT TELLING ME THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND ALL OF THE FAILS LED TO THE TRANSMISSION ISSUES.
MY CAR WAS JUMPED STARTED BY AAA MY CAR SPARKED MY FUSR BOX WAS BLOWN OUT HAVE TO TAKE MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP MY FUSE BOX WAS BLOWN AND MY HEATER AND AIR BLOWER WAS NOT WORKING IT WAS AT MY RESIDENCE
VEHICLE HAS BOTH EXTREMELY POOR DOWNROAD AND SIDEROAD ILLUMINATION. VERY HARD TO SEE ANIMALS STANDING BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AT NIGHT, RESULTING IN SEVERAL NEAR MISSES WITH LARGE DEER. UPGRADING THE FACTORY BULBS MADE LITTLE TO NO DIFFERENCE.
THE 2017 RAV4 THAT I OWN BEGAN HAVING FUEL SYSTEM PROBLEMS IN JULY OF 2017. THE CAR WOULD STALL WHEN IT CAME TO A STOP OR IT WOULD STALL SOMETIMES WHILE DRIVING AND THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR WOULD THEN SMELL OF GASOLINE. I'VE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER 3 TIMES TO TRY AND RESOLVE THE ISSUE. FIRST THE DEALER CLEANED THE FUEL INJECTORS AND THROTTLE BODY AND A FEW WEEKS LATER THE PROBLEM RETURNED. ON THE SECOND VISIT TO THE DEALER I WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS FUEL IN THE CHARCOAL CANISTER. THE CANISTER WAS REPLACE AND LESS THAN A MONTH LATER THE PROBLEM RETURNED. I RETURNED TO THE DEALER IN OCTOBER OF 2020 AGAIN AND THEY SAID THE CHARCOAL CANISTER AGAIN HAS GASOLINE IN IT. THIS TIME THE DEALER REPLACED THE FUEL TANK AND CHARCOAL CANISTER. SINCE OCTOBER OF 2020 THE CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN ABOUT 1600 MILES AND THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN ON FEBRUARY 7, 2021. AGAIN THE DEALER FOUND GASOLINE IN THE CHARCOAL CANISTER. ON FEBRUARY 9, 2021 TOYOTA CORPORATE INSTRUCTED THEM TO AGAIN REPLACE THE FUEL TANK, CHARCOAL CANISTER ALONG WITH THE FUEL GAGE AND OTHER RELATED PARTS. I WAS ASKED BY THE DEALER IF WE WERE OVERFILLING THE FUEL TANK, I ASSURED THEM THAT WE WERE NOT AS WE DISCONTINUE ADDING FUEL WHEN THE PUMP SHUTS OFF AUTOMATICALLY. I WAS ALSO ASKED IF WE PARK THE CAR ON A SLOPE TO THIS I SAID YES BECAUSE WE LIVE IN A HILLY AREA. WE PURCHASED THE CAR IN JANUARY 2017 AND PARKING THE CAR ON A HILLY STREET WAS NEVER A PROBLEM. AT PRESENT WE ARE WAITING ON PARTS FROM TOYOTA.
MY CAR WAS BOUGHT NEW ON JUNE 24, 2017. IT HAD TWO TIMES SERIOUS GAS LEAKAGES. 4/29/2019, 1ST. TIME, MILEAGE WAS 9,967, I PAID $837.72, FOR REPLACING THE 'CHARCOAL CANISTER' AND I WAS TOLD IT'S NOT UNDER TOYOTA FACTORY WARRANTY BY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP & HEADQUARTERS CENTER IN DALLAS, TX. 7/01/2019, 2ND. TIME GAS LEAKAGE, MILEAGE WAS 10,691, MY CAR WAS TOWED TO THE SAME TOYOTA SERVICE FOR THE SAME GAS LEAKAGE ISSUE AGAIN... FINALLY, TOYOTA REPLACED 'CHARCOAL CANISTER' FOR THE 2ND. TIME, AND OTHER SYSTEM ASSOCIATED WITH THE GAS LEAKAGE WITH NO CHARGE. BOTH GAS LEAKAGE ARE ALL THE SAME, 60 DAYS APART, WERE ALL FROM THE REAR, BOTTOM, DRIVER SIDE OF THE CAR, THERE WAS A GAS PUDDLE ON MY INCLINED DRIVEWAY. AFTER I CHECKED TOYOTA OWNER'S WARRANTY RIGHTS NOTIFICATION BOOKLETS - FEDERAL EMISSION CONTROL WARRANTY ' 'CHARCOAL CANISTER' IS CLEARLY UNDER TOYOTA WARRANTY PARTS LIST ' WITHIN 3 YEARS OR 36,000 MILES. APPARENTLY, TOYOTA RAV4 HYBRID MODEL -'GAS LEAKAGE' CAUSED BY DEFECTED EVAPORATIVE SYSTEM, CAN'T PARKING ON INCLINED OR UPHILL DRIVEWAY WITH MORE THAN HALF TANK OF GAS. I CALLED AND SENT TWO CLAIM LETTERS DATED ON 6/25/2019 AND 8/26/2019, REQUEST TOYOTA REFUND MY $837.72 ' FOR 1ST. TIME REPAIRED COST THAT PAID ON 5/7/2019. TOYOTA HAS DECLINED MY CLAIMS, REFUSED REFUNDING MY PAYMENT OF $837.72, WE ARE VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH TOYOTA'S UNETHICAL, FRAUD NOTES ON THE INVOICE ' SO CALLED 'GAS IS OVERFILLED'. TOYOTA SHIRKS THE RESPONSIBILITY TO THE CUSTOMER IN ORDER NOT COVER THE VEHICLE DEFECTIVE. INTENTIONALLY VIOLATE THEIR WARRANTY POLICY. WE HAVE BEEN WRONGLY, UNFAIRLY TREATED. SO WE ASK THE NHTSA, PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS MATTER, MONITOR THE TOYOTA CORRECT THEIR MISTAKE, AND REFUND MY $837.72 ASAP. THERE ARE SOME OTHER SIMILAR GAS LEAKAGE CLAIM CASES OF THE RAV4 HYBRID MODEL. IT'S VERY DANGER TO DRIVE WITH THE GAS LEAKAGE, CAN GET FIRE. JUSTICE IS MATTERS.
LAST SPRING HAD $700.00 BRAKE JOB ON MY DAUGHTERS CAR AT TOYOTA DEALER WE HAVE DELT WITH FOR YEARS.I HAPPEN TO DRIVE IT ONE DAY AND FOUND BRAKES SPONGY AND WENT WITHIN ONE INCH OF FLOOR TO STOP. JUST DROVE AGAIN AND SAME PROBLEM !. IS THIS A DESIGN PROBLEM WITH MASTER CYLINDER !
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN ON A GREEN LIGHT AT AN INTERSECTION, ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO HIS VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES SUSTAINED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE WAS CONTACTED FOR THE OTHER INDIVIDUAL WHO WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT FROM UNKNOWN INJURIES. THE CONTACT HAD NOT SOUGHT MEDICAL ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A COLLISION SHOP BY THE POLICE DEPARTMENT. T MOSES TOYOTA (1433 MACCORKLE AVE, SAINT ALBANS, WV 25177, (304) 727-7777) WAS CONTACTED REGARDING THE FAILURE HOWEVER, INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VIN WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. THE CONTACT WAS REFERRED TO THE NHTSA AND THE MANUFACTURER FOR ASSISTANCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 68,240.
FROM A STOP OR SLOW MOVE, SOMETIMES WHEN I HAVE TO PULL AHEAD QUICKLY, AS TO GO BEFORE AN ONCOMING CAR, THE ENGINE WILL LOSE POWER AND NOT ACCELERATE AS INTENDED.
BACK HATCH IS FROZEN AND WILL NOT OPEN. AT FIRST IT OPENED A FEW INCHES, NOW IT DOESN'T OPEN AT ALL. JUST PURCHASED THIS USED VEHICLE IN JUNE! VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR.*JB
I HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING TO THE DEALER SINCE BUYING THE VEHICLE AND WHILE UNDER WARRANTY ABOUT THE BRAKES. I ALMOST GOT MYSELF KILL ON HIGHWAY I25 BECAUSE THE BRAKES FAILED TOTALLY HAVING TO RESORT TO PULLING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. I HAD TO WAIT FOR THE CAR TO SLOW DOWN TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY. THE DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE ME FOR THE REPAIR WHEN I HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING FOR MONTHS. IF I DIE, TOYOTA WILL BE THE RESPONSIBLE PARTY, I LEFT MY CART AT LARRY MILLER TOYOTA AND WILL ACQUIRE A LAWYER. I AM THE WIDOW OF A DECORATED MILITARY MEMBER. IF HE WAS HERE, NONE OF THIS WOULD BE HAPPENING. I LIVE ON A FIXED INCOME.
2017 TOYOTA RAV4 LE ISSUES. THERE IS QUITE A LOT OF ROAD NOISE ESPECIALLY DURING HIGHWAY TRAVEL. THE VEHICLE COULD BE INSULATED BETTER. THE PRIMARY ISSUE IS WITH THE WIPERS. THE SPEED SETTINGS ARE NOT REFINED ENOUGH. THE SETTING CAUSE THE WIPERS TO EITHER BE TOO FAST OR SLOW DEPENDING ON THE AMOUNT OF RAIN EXPERIENCE. ALSO, I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND WIPERS THAT DO NOT CAUSE THE ANNOYING LOUD STUTTER/RUBBNG NOISE. I HAVE TRIED ALL THE DIFFERENT TOP OF THE LINE BRANDS WITH NO SUCCESS. RAINX, MICHELIN, BOSCH, AND TRICO.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT, HE HAD REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES WITH ALL SEASON TIRES. HE STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 35 MPH ON A RAINY DAY, A TRUCK BEGAN TO MERGE INTO HIS LANE. AS THE CONTACT BEGAN TO VEER TO THE RIGHT, THE ANTI LOCK BRAKES ACTIVATED INDEPENDENTLY WHICH CAUSED HIS VEHICLE TO VEER INTO THE LEFT LANE AND HIT THE REAR OF THE TRUCK. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED UPON IMPACT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT NEITHER HIMSELF OR THE OTHER DRIVER SOUGHT MEDICAL ATTENTION; HOWEVER, THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE HAD RECENTLY STARTED TO EXPERIENCE PAIN IN HIS RIGHT CHEST. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AT THE SCENE. DUE TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT TOW YARD WHERE IT WAS DEEMED DESTROYED. THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER HAD YET TO BE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT BELIEVED THAT THE FAULTY ABS SYSTEM WAS THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 67,000.
WITH RAIN AND SNOW THE SENSOR START BEEPING AND WARNING OF OBJECTS IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WHEN THERE ARE NOTHING. DRIVING IN SNOW GETS THE SENSORS BLOCKED AND YOU CANT USE THE CRUISE CONTROL.
AFTER DRIVING FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES IN COLD WEATHER, WHEN THE VEHICLE STOPS AT RED LIGHT/STOP SIGNS RPM DROPS TO 400-500 RESULTING IN NOTICEABLE SHAKING LIKE THE ENGINE IS ABOUT TO STALL. I'M AFRAID THE VEHICLE MY STALL IN THE FUTURE.
MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ON NHTSA SITE (123+) OF RAV4 BRAKE PROBLEMS (EARLY REPLACEMENT AT LOW MILEAGE AND BRAKE FAILURES AT VARIOUS SPEEDS). TOYOTA HAS BEEN IGNORING THE ISSUE. WHY HAVE THERE BEEN NO RECALLS? OUR BRAKES ARE GOING SOFT AT 30,00 MILES (4 YEARS) AND THE DEALER SAYS WE NEED FRONT AND BACK REPLACEMENTS. OTHER COMPLAINERS NOTED THE NEED FOR FREQUENT AND REPEATED REPLACEMENTS.
MY HUSBAND HAD DRIVEN THE CAR AND HAD THOUGHT HE HAD PUSHED THE IGNITION BUTTON TO "OFF". HE THEN CLOSED THE GARAGE DOOR AND LEFT OUR HOME FOR A WALK. WHEN I CAME HOME A FEW HOURS LATER AND OPENED GARAGE DOOR THE CAR WAS RUNNING AND FILLING OUR GARAGE WITH CARBON MONOXIDE. THIS POINTS TO A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH OUR HYBRID TOYOTA , UNLESS THERE IS SOMETHING AMISS WITH OUR CAR, WHICH I DON'T BELIEVE IS THE CASE. SPECIFICALLY, THE ENGINE CAN BE LEFT ON AND THE CAR MAKES NO SOUND MUCH OF THE TIME WHEN IT IS PARKED. I CAN JUST IMAGINE A PARENT LIKE ME LEAVING AN INFANT SLEEPING AND UNATTENDED IN A CLOSED GARAGE WHILE THEY GO INSIDE. IF THE CAR WINDOWS ARE LEFT OPEN HOW LONG WOULD IT TAKE FOR A TRAGIC ENDING TO THIS SCENARIO.
TL* THE CONTACT'S PARENTS OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS AT A STAND STILL, WHEN HE NOTICED YELLOW FLUID UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER TOYOTA OF HOLLYWOOD FL LOCATED AT 1841 FL-7, HOLLYWOOD, FL 33021, (866) 332-6839, WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH NEEDING THE BATTERY TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT STATED THE BATTERY ACID LEAKED AND DAMAGE SEVERAL COMPONENTS UNDER THE HOOD. THE MANUFACTURER HAD BEEN INFORMED OF FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 15,087.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO OPEN THE TRUNK, THE HYDRAULIC CYLINDER FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE HYDRAULIC CYLINDER NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO CONFIRMED THE DIAGNOSTIC RESULT. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS NO WARRANTY ON THE PART. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
FAN BLOWER MOTOR FOR THE A/C BROKE DOWN AROUND 50,000 KMS, THIS IS A PREMATURE BREAK DOWN. I DID'NT GET A CHANCE TO BRING IT FOR REPAIR UNTIL MY ODIMETER REACHED 70,000KMS SO THE DEALERSHIP DECLINED THE WARRANTY REPAIR.
AUTO-HIGH BEAM DOESN'T FUNCTION NORMALLY AT TIMES. AUTO-HIGH BEAM ICON GOES OFF AT RANDOM, EVEN THOUGH THE LEVER IS PUSHED FORWARD AND THE HEADLIGHT STALK IS IN THE 'AUTO' POSITION. THIS CAUSES THE HIGH BEAMS TO BE INOPERABLE WHEN THE HEADLIGHTS ARE SET TO 'AUTO.'
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4 HYBRID. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT SUDDENLY ILLUMINATED, WARNING MESSAGES BEGAN TO DISPLAY ON THE DASH SCREEN; BEFORE WHITE SMOKE WAS PRESENT COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. MOMENTS LATER FLAMES WERE COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED TO THE SCENE AND EXTINGUISHED THE FLAMES. DURING THE INCIDENT, THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED AWAY. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE MANUFACTURER AND LOCAL DEALER LARRY MILLER TOYOTA (2465 48TH CT. BOULDER, CO 80301) WERE NOTIFIED OF THE INCIDENT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 66,500.
WHEN STARTING AND PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP LIGHT AND TURNING, THE CAR SUDDENLY STALLED IN A SUBURBAN SETTING. NO HYBRID BATTERY POWER OR GAS POWER WAS AVAILABLE. ALL DASH BOARD LIGHTS CAME ON. THIS WAS SUDDEN AND THERE WAS NO HESITATION ON ACCELERATION OR INDICATIONS OF PROBLEMS PRIOR. IN TRAFFIC, HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND RESTART IT. WORKED OK AFTER THAT. THE CAR HAS 29,000 MILES AND IS SERVICED REGULARLY.
IT WAS ABOUT 6:05 AM. I WAS DRIVING ON 288 HIGHWAY IN PEARLAND, TEXAS. THERE WAS LIGHT RAIN. I HEARD A VERY LOUD BANG ON THE ROOF AND SOUNDED OF GLASS SUBSTANCE RUNNING THE THE BACK OF THE ROOF. THAT NOISE FREAKED ME OUT, BUT I COULD STILL KEEP DRIVING TO MY WORK.
I CALLED UP TO MY DEALERSHIP BECAUSE MY AIR CONDITIONING HAS BEEN ACTING UP. IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY AFTER I'VE DRIVEN MY CAR FOR A LITTLE MORE THAN 30 MINUTES. THE AIR SLOWLY STOPS BLOWING OUT. WHEN TURNING THE AIR COMPLETELY OFF SOMETIMES IT WILL BLOW OUT FULLY AND OTHER TIMES IT WON'T BLOW OUT AT ALL. UPON SPEAKING TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY SAID THEY SEE THIS OFTEN AND KNEW WITHOUT A DOUBT IT WAS MY BLOWER MOTOR AND WANTED TO CHARGE ME MORE THAN $300.00
WHEN DRIVING AT 25 MPH TO 40 MPH MY VEHICLE STARTS TO SHUDDER. I CAN HEAR IT AS IF IT IS COMING UP FROM THE UNDER CARRIAGE. IT DOESN'T DO IT ALL THE TIME BUT IT OCCURS AT LEAST ONCE PER WEEK. THE SHUDDER OCCURS WHEN DRIVING ON A SUBURBAN STREET GOING STRAIGHT DOWN THE ROAD.
I HAD OWN 2017 TOYOTA RAV4LE FOR LESS THAN 3 YEARS AND LESS THEN 25000 MILE, WE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO HAVE A SCHEDULE MAINTENANCE. WE HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCE ANY PROBLEM AT ALL, OVERALL IT WAS GOOD DRIVING CAR. HOWEVER, ON 5/4/2020, I PARKED MY CAR AT PARKING LOT, TURNED OFF ENGINE. I HEARD GENTLE CLICK CLICK TWO SOUND, DO NOT REALIZED IT WAS FROM MY CAR (OTHER PEOPLE WAS UNLOAD STUFF). I OPEN THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR GET READY TO OFF MY CAR AND GO. I SMELLED RUBBER BURNING. I LOOK AROUND AND SEE MY ENGINE HAD LIGHT SMOKE CAME OUT FROM ENGINE, THEN BECAME DARKER SMOKE, AND FOLLOW BY FIRE. I CALLED 911, THEY SEND A FIRE DEPARTMENT TO PUT OFF THE FIRE FOR ME. MY TOYOTA RAV4 LE WAS ALL BURNED BY UNKNOWN REASON. I DO NOT SMOKE, I PAID OFF MY CAR AND I HAVE NO FINANCIAL GAIN TO HAVE CAR BURN. I JUST WANT TO WARNING OTHER OWNER, IT COULD HAPPENED TO YOU, I WAS LUCKY TO BE ABLE TO WORK OUT FROM MY BURNING VEHICLE. MY CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY, BUT TOYOTA DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT ABLE TO HONOR SUCH WARRANTY, ASKED ME CALL HEADQUARTER, I TRIED TO EMAIL BUT AFTER I UPLOAD PICTURES AND IT WAS SUDDENLY INTERCEPTED IN THE CLOUD-DISAPPEAR. I AM REPORT THIS INCIDENT TO WARNING OTHERS. *TR
WHEN APPROACHING A STOP SIGN I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD FORCING ME TO HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. SINCE I'VE OWNED THIS CAR, THIS HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES FORTUNATELY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT ONLY TWICE, 9/4/2018 AND 11/2 2019. IN BOTH CASES THIS OCCURRED ON A CITY STREET. I BELIEVE THE CAUSE OF THIS IS BECAUSE THE GAS PEDAL AND THE BRAKE PEDAL ARE TOO CLOSE TOGETHER . IF I DON'T APPLY THE BRAKES ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BRAKE PEDAL, I WILL HIT THE GAS PEDAL CAUSING THE CAR TO LURCH FORWARD. I HAVE A NORMAL SIZE FOOT - SIZE 10 SHOE. THIS IS AN UNSAFE CAR I DO NOT ALLOW MY WIFE OR GROWN CHILDREN TO DRIVE IT. THE CAR IS LEASED AND EXPIRES SEPT 1ST OF THIS YEAR. I CAN'T WAIT TO GET RID OF IT *TR
WATER PUMP LEAK I BELIEVE STARTED AROUND 21,000 MILES.ALONG WITH THE REPLACEMENT OF FRONT BRAKE PADS I COMPLAINED OF RIGHT FRONT SIDE OF CAR WITH SQUEALING NOISE POSSIBLE DRIVE BELT OR DIRTY ROTOR. AT ONE POINT BOTH FRONT ROTORS SLIGHTLY WARM TO TOUCH AFTER 45 MIN CITY DRIVE HOME, ANOTHER TIME RIGHT ROTOR HOT AND LEFT SLIGHTLY WARM. THEY REPLACED FRONT BRAKE PADS NOT CHECKING CALIPERS OR HOSE AND JUST PUT ON BRAKE PADS AND SAID RIGHT TIRE WORN AND REPLACED BOTH AND SAID IT WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM. AFTER A FEW DAYS TOYOTA REP AND TOLD HIM THE SAID INTERMITTENT SQUEALING SOMEWHAT GRIND NOISE WAS BACK. NOT TAKEN SERIOUSLY I REPORTED TO CORPORATE AND WENT TO ANOTHER DEALER TO DO DIAGNOSTIC CHECKING CALIPERS AND FOUND NOTHING. AROUND 50,000 MILES I FOUND POWDER NEXT TO DRIVE BELT. THEY DISCOVERED IT WAS A LEAKING WATER PUMP AND REPLACED MY PUMP AND DRIVE BELT. 41/2 MONTHS LATER THE CAR HAD SAME SQUEALING NOW RUBBER SOUND ADDED, STEERING STIFFER AND HISSING SOUND CAME FROM FRONT OF ENGINE AT LIGHT. TOOK IN AND COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG IN ENTIRE DAY 8 HRS. I DROVE AWAY AND BY THIRD LIGHT SQUEALING FOR 25 MINS AND NEIGHBORS HEARD ME COMING,ONE COUPLE REPORTED LOUD AT FRONT RIGHT TIRE. I REPORTED THAT IMMEDIATELY TO [XXX] AT PRECISION THAT MY CAR WAS WORSE AND TURNING STEERING WHEEL RIGHT AND LEFT IS NOW HAPPENING AS NEIGHBOR REPORTED BUT NO RETURN CALL. THIS CAR SOUND TYPICALLY HAPPENS AT BRAKING AT LIGHT AND HITTING GAS AT LIGHT ON CITY STREETS DRIVE AT 40-50 MILES PER HR.BUT USUALLY AT LIGHTS CAN HEAR. CALLED [XXX] AFTER LEFT SHOP CAR RIGHT AND LEFT TURNS SQUEAK WHEN TURNING STEERING WHEEL ONLY ONE DAY DID I HEAR TWO DIFFERENT SOUNDS WHIRRING NOISE AND HISSING SOUND 3 DAYS APART AT LIGHT STOPPED 3 WEEKS MY CAR, JUMPED FORWARD AT A STOP I'VE HAD IT ALIGNED NEW TIRES & STILL INTERMITTENT NOISE NOW WORSE DEC 2019 CHANGED WATER PUMP AND DRIVE BELT /SPRAYED ENGINE DOWN. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
2017 RAV 4 STRUCK A CONCRETE LIGHT POST IN PARKING LOT. CAR WAS MOVING FORWARD APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, IMPACTED DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT AND FENDER. AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. NO COLLISION ALARM SOUNDED. ENTIRE FRONT PANEL DESTROYED, MAJOR ELECTRICAL SENSOR DAMAGE, DRIVER'S DOOR UNABLE TO OPEN. HOOD DAMAGED. SUSPENSION BENT. DRIVER SUFFERED MAJOR BRUISING AND CHEST PAIN. BOTH ELBOWS IMPACTED SOMETHING IN COLLISION. *TR
DRIVER'S SIDE HEADREST RISES APPROX. 2-1/2 TO 3 INCHES FROM LOWEST POSITION DURING THE NORMAL COURSE OF DRIVING. I DO NOT ADJUST THE HEIGHT OF THE HEADREST, EVER, OTHER THAN TO CORRECT THIS UNUSUAL PHENOMENON. THIS HAPPENS CONSTANTLY AND REPEATEDLY IN AS LITTLE AS 10-15 MILES DRIVING OVER PAVED, SMOOTH ROADS WHILE DRIVING SPEEDS RANGING FROM 45-75MPH. HAS HAPPENED SPORADICALLY SINCE WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW, BUT HAPPENS REGULARLY AND CONSISTENTLY NOW. INTERESTINGLY, THIS SAME PHENOMENON HAS OCCURRED WITH OTHER TOYOTAS I PURCHASED NEW, NAMELY MY 2006 COROLLA AND 2008 COROLLA LE. NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT BEING A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE UNTIL I SAW IT RECURRING ON MY 2017 RAV4. DEALER IS EXPERIMENTING ON FIX BY REPLACING ADJUSTMENT BUTTONS ON BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER SEATS, AT MY EXPENSE (JUST RETURNED FROM LONG ROAD TRIP AND TOOK VEHICLE TO TOYOTA AT 264 MILES PAST END OF 36K WARRANTY) BUT COULD NOT HAVE SERVICED ON THE ROAD. UNFORTUNATELY, DEALER INFORMED ME THAT THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING OF THE INVESTIGATION PROCESS TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM AND MAY INVOLVE MORE EXTENSIVE WORK (ALSO AT MY EXPENSE) IF BUTTON REPLACEMENT DOES NOT WORK.
WHILE I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK ON THURSDAY, MARCH 5, 2020, I SMELLED SMOKE. I LOOKED AT THE TEMPERATURE ON THE DASHBOARD AND IT SHOWED THAT THE TEMPERATURE WAS A LITTLE BELOW THE MIDDLE LINE INDICATING THE VEHICLE WAS NOT HOT. I CONTINUED DRIVING FOR A COUPLE MORE BLOCKS AND CONTINUED TO SMELL SMOKE SO ATTEMPTED TO PULL OVER INTO A PARKING LOT. WHEN I TRIED TO PULL OVER, THE VEHICLE STOPPED ON ITS OWN SO I WAS HALF WAY BETWEEN THE STREET AND PARKING LOT. I SAW SMOKE COME OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. ABOUT TWO MINUTES LATER, FLAMES STARTED COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE.
DRIVERS SIDE DOOR LOCK STOPPED WORKING CAR ONLY HAS 37,000 AND IS 31 MONTHS OLD. DEALER WANTS $1000.00 TO REPAIR.
AUTO HIGH BEAMS STOPPED WORKING DEALER NEEDED TO REPLACE THE HEADLIGHT STALK ON STEERING WHEEL
I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT IN A LEFT HAND TURN LANE. A VEHICLE MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN ACCIDENTALLY DROVE HEAD FIRST INTO MY CAR. MY PASSENGER AND I HAD SEAT BELTS ON. THE APPROXIMATE SPEED OF THE OTHER CAR WAS GREATER THAN 10 MILES PER HOUR. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY DESPITE CONSIDERABLE FRONT END DAMAGE. A MESSAGE ON THE DASHBOARD SAYS "SRS AIRBAG SYSTEM MALFUNCTION. VISIT YOUR DEALER". I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE AIRBAGS WERE NOT DEFECTIVE. I HAVE READ THAT IF A VEHICLE IS STATIONARY AND THE SEAT BELTS ARE ON IT MAY NOT ACTIVATE. THAT IS OK - JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT IS THE INTENT.
ABH (AUTOMATIC HIGH BEAM) SYSTEM DISCONNECTS RANDOMLY AND SHUTS DOWN THE HEAD LIGHT HIGH BEAM. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE ABH INDICATOR ON THE DASH GOES DARK. ABH MAY OR MAY NOT COME BACK ON AFTER SEVERAL SECONDS. THIS HAPPENS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WITH NO OTHER VEHICLES OR LIGHTS AROUND. THIS IS A PROBLEM BECAUSE THERE IS NO QUICK WAY TO GET THE HIGH BEAMS BACK ON. THIS HAS HAPPENED SINCE THE CAR WAS ABOUT 2 YEARS OLD.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HER DAUGHTER WAS MAKING A TURN THE STEERING WHEEL CEASED AS WHITE SMOKE WAS SEEN COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP AS FLAMES WERE SEEN COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT'S DAUGHTER WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE WITH NO INJURIES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND EXTINGUHISED THE FIRE. A FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT STATED WAS AWAITING INSPECTION BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. THE MANUFACTURER THE DEALERSHIP WAS MADE OF AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED BY A DEALER OR INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, HOWEVER NO ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 57,000.
MY WINDSHIELD CRACKED TOOK TO DEALER THEY SAID IT WAS A PRESSURE CRACK HAVE BEEN HAVING ISSUES WITH MY WIPER BLADES JUMPING/CHIRPING! ALSO HAVING AN ISSUE WITH TRANSMISSION SLIPPING FROM TIME TO TIME! BREAKS BEEN REPLACED AND STILL HAVE A SQUEAL AND NOT WANTING TO STOP SOMETIMES HAVE TO PUSH PETAL TO FLOOR
BOTH IN MOTION/STATIONARY. WINDSHIELD AND RT. FRONT DOOR GLASS SHOW SIGNS OF DELIMITATION AS SEEN BY LOCAL GLASS REPAIR AND TINTING COMPANIES. BOTH BELIEVE THE VISUAL IMPAIRMENT WILL BECOME WORSE AS THE POLYVINYLBUTARETE GLUE SECTIONS BECOME CONNECTED IN A GROWING "SPIDER WEB" ARRAY ACROSS THE ENTIRE GLASS. ANY SUNLIGHT AT A 30 DEGREE ANGLE TO SOUTH TRAVEL CAUSES CONFUSION AS THE PHOTONS HIT THE GLUE AND REFLECT THE LIGHT. LOCAL GLASS TECH CALLS THESE "STARS".
THE HALOGEN BULBS IN THE RAV4 LE ARE SUBSTANDARD AND PRESENT A SAFETY HAZARD. AFTER A DEALER UPGRADE TO SOME BRIGHTER BULBS, THERE IS STILL VERY LITTLE SPILL TO THE SIDES OF THE ROAD. THIS PREVENTS ME FROM SEEING POTENTIAL HAZARDS LIKE DEER WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL NEAR MISSES WITH ANIMALS AND EVEN ONE WITH A PEDESTRIAN INSIDE THE CITY LIMITS BECAUSE I SIMPLY COULDN'T SEE THEM. HEADLIGHT AIM HAS BEEN VERIFIED AS CORRECT SO THAT'S NOT THE ISSUE EITHER. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION WAITING TO HAPPEN.
THE AIRBAGS ARE OFF AND I CANT TURN IT ON, EVERY WEEK TURN IT ON THE LIGTH FLAT TIRE AND THE TIRE ARE GOOD INCLUIDING EXTRA TIRE, AND MY BRAKES ARE DOING A EXTRANGE NOISE I CHECKED THE BRAKES AND ARE GOOD.
I WAS DRIVING ON I 10 SOUTHBOUND WITH MY TWO DISABLED CHILDREN. MY FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE BLEW OUT THE SIDEWALL IN 1-2 INCH CHUNKS. IT SOUNDED LIKE MACHINE GUN FIRE. I HAD TO SAFELY COAST TO THE SHOULDER HOLDING MY STEERING WHEEL FIRMLY AND PUTTING MY CAR IN NEUTRAL. I HAD AIR CHECKS AND BALANCING REGULARLY. I KEEP MY CAR IN A GARAGE WITH LOW MILEAGE. DISCOUNT TIRES CHECKED MY TIRES ON THREE OCCASSIONS AND TOLD ME TO GO TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR HELP. THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS RUDE AND DISMISSED MY CONCERNS COMPLETELY MAKING IT SOUND LIKE MY TIRES WERE WEARING AT A NORMAL RATE, WHICH IS NOT TRUE. I ASKED THEM TO HELP ME REACH OUT TO THE TIRE MANUFACTURER AND/OR HELP ME DETERMINE IF MY NEW RAV4 CAME TO ME WITH IT'S ORIGINAL TIRES OFF THE LOT. THEY DISMISSED ME AND I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO TOYOTA TO PURCHASE A NEW CAR AGAIN. BEWARE, ONCE THEY HAVE YOUR MONEY, IT SEEMS THEY NO LONGER CARE ABOUT YOU AFTER THE INITIAL SALE. I AM UNCERTAIN IF THIS IS THE CASE WITH ALL TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS, OR JUST OURS IN TUCSON, AZ, BUT PLEASE, BUYERS BEWARE! THEY ENDANGERED ME AND MY CHILDREN AND REFUSED TO ADMIT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THIS PROBLEM. THE ROAD I TRAVELLED WAS SMOOTH, I WAS TRAVELING AT 65MPH, AND I DID NOT HIT ANYTHING IN THE ROAD. MY SPINE IS A WRECK FROM THE JARRING... LEGS ARE BRUISED UP, TOO. THANKFULLY A STATE TROOPER ASSISTED US. STATE FARM ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE WAS ABSOLUTELY BOTCHED UP BY THEIR AUTOMATED SYSTEM AND DISPATCHED TO SOMEWHERE IN PHOENIX. SO GRATEFUL FOR THE STATE TROOPER AND DISCOUNT TIRES FOR THEIR CARE. TOYOTA NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS ISSUE AND THE TERRIBLE TIRES. THE MANUFACTURER NEEDS TO KNOW THIS IS A PROBLEM. MY LAST TIRES LASTED TO 60,000 MILES. NO REASON I SHOULD HAVE HAD TO CHANGE ALL 4 TIRES ON A NEW VEHICLE AT 19,000-20,000 MILES. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE HAS BEEN A SAFETY RECALL ON MY VEHICLE. TOYOTA SHOULD PAY FOR MY TIRES.
TRANSMISSION TORQUE CONVERTER SHUDDER AND SHIFT HESITATION - SHUDDERS BETWEEN GEARS, OCCURS BETWEEN ANY TWO GEARS BUT MOSTLY WITHIN THE 20-55 MPH RANGE. BEGUN MOST NOTICEABLY AT ~90K, VEHICLE NOW HAS 103K ON IT AND SHUDDER CONTINUES TO WORSEN AND BECOME MORE FREQUENT. BROUGHT IT BACK TO DEALER SEVERAL TIMES NOW AND THEY HAVE ADVISED MOST LIKELY TORQUE CONVERTER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED (APPROX $3-$4K REPAIR). SAME PROBLEM AS THE GENERATION BEFORE WHERE TOYOTA EVENTUALLY EXTENDED WARRANTY COVER FOR: HTTPS://WWW.TOYOHEADQUARTERS.COM/THREADS/2013-2015-TOYOTA-RAV4-TRANSMISSION-SHUDDER-WARRANTY-EXTENSION-ZH1.1148/PAGE-2

2017 TOYOTA RAV4 TRANSMISSION GIVES UP AT 100K MILES.THE TOYOTA DEALER ASK ME TO $6000 FOR REPAIR.
AUTOMATIC HIGH BEAMS (AHB) MALFUNCTION. WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT THE AHB SYSTEMS OCCASIONALLY (EVERY ~10 MINUTES LATELY) SHUTS DOWN AND THE GREEN "AUTO HIGH BEAM" INDICATOR GOES OFF - RESULTING IN TOTAL LOSS OF HIGH BEAMS IN ALL AMBIENT CONDITIONS. THIS USUALLY LASTS ABOUT A MINUTE AND THEN THE SYSTEMS RECOVERS. THERE ARE MANY CASES OF THIS REPORTED ON THE INTERNET - WHICH CAN BE FOUND BY GOOGLING "TOYOTA AUTO HIGH BEAMS MALFUNCTION". THE ISSUE SEEMS TO AFFECT ALL TOYOTA AND LEXUS VEHICLES MANUFACTURED IN THE LAST ~3 YEARS AND EQUIPPED WITH AHB. LEXUS OWNERS SEEM TO BE ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY FIX THIS UNDER WARRANTY BY THEIR DEALERS - THE FIX IS CLEANING THE CAMERA LENS AND THE WINDSHIELD IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA. UNFORTUNATELY IT SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET THIS ADDRESSED BY TOYOTA. I HAD TWO DEALER VISITS AND TWO CALLS WITH TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE - EACH TIME THEY JUST TRY TO CONVINCE ME THAT "I AM USING IT WRONG". BY THE WAY I HAVE A VIDEO OF THIS HAPPENING AND SHOWED IT MY DEALER BUT WAS DENIED WARRANTY SERVICE NEVERTHELESS. A SIMILAR VIDEO AVAILABLE ON YOUTUBE - JUST SEARCH FOR "A_32T4QTX4M" THERE.
AUTO DIM HEADLIGHTS WORK WHEN THEY WANT TO IT HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM FOR MANY MONTHS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS AND DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE PEDAL TRAVELED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE DID NOT BRAKE IN A TIMELY MANNER. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. WHILE DRIVING 30 OR 50 MPH, THE RPMS ABRUPTLY INCREASED WITHOUT WARNING, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO JERK AND SHAKE UNCONTROLLABLY. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HUDSON TOYOTA (599 NJ-440, JERSEY CITY, NJ 07305, 201-713-5508) AND PAID TO HAVE THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED. THE DEALER INFORMED HIM THAT THE FRONT BRAKE PADS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THE REAR BRAKE PADS NEEDED TO BE CLEANED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURES CONTINUED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO ROUTE 22 TOYOTA (109 US-22, HILLSIDE, NJ 07205, 973-287-4741) WHERE THEY DID NOT HONOR HIS EXTENDED WARRANTY AND ATTEMPTED TO CHARGE $250 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND PROVIDED A CASE NUMBER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 17,500.*BF CONTACT STATED ENGINE CONTROL WAS REPLACED AND TRANSMISSION FAILURE WAS REPAIRED.*JB
WHILE DRIVING ON AN INTERSTATE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, I HEARD A LOUD BOOM. THEN, I COULD HEAR WIND THROUGH THE INSIDE COVER. THERE ARE PIECES OF BROKEN GLASS ABOVE THE INSIDE COVER. I HAD THE INSIDE COVER CLOSED WHILE DRIVING, SO THE GLASS DID NOT ENTER THE CABIN. REVIEW OF MY DASH CAM FOOTAGE DID NOT SHOW ANY VISIBLE DEBRIS OR ROCKS THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED IT. IT SOUNDED LIKE AN EXPLOSION AND NOT A CRACK.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. IN ADDITION, THE TRACTION CONTROL AND CHARGING SYSTEM MALFUNCTION INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO RESTART AND WAS TAKEN TO TOYOTA OF HOLLYWOOD (6000 HOLLYWOOD BLVD, HOLLYWOOD CA, 323-498-2260) TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE RESULTS WERE UNKNOWN. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 27,220.
I PURCHASED MY 2017 RAV 4 IN JULY 2017 WITH 125 MILES. AT 6,000 MILES MY VEHICLE REQUIRED NEW BRAKE PADS ( THE PADS WERE BROKEN IN HALF). TOYOTA OF NORTH HOLLYWOOD AGREED TO REPLACE THE PADS OUT OF COURTESY. THEY BLAMED IT ON THE WAY I DRIVE SAID TOTAL PERSON AT FAULT WAS ME. MY VEHICLE NOW HAS 34,000 MILES THIS WILL BE THE FIFTH TIME MY BRAKE PADS REQUIRE CHANGING. THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT MY DRIVING. I BELIEVE THE VEHICLE HAS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM. MY VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INVOLVED IN ACCIDENT.
IGNITION REMAINS ON WHEN I EXIT VEHICLE IF FORGET TO PUSH OFF BUTTON WITH MY KEY IN POCKET. CAR NOT RUNNING WHEN I LEAVE SO IT IS EASY TO FORGET AND ENGINE CAN/WILL RESTART AT LATER TIME. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST TWO TIMES IN DRIVEWAY. IF IN HAPPENED WHEN I PUT IN GARAGE AND WENT TO BED IN ROOM OVER GARAGE IT COULD PRESENT A CARBON MONOXIDE HAZARD.
TRAVELING ON A TRIP USING DRIVERS HEATED SEAT. IT GOT TOO HOT. I TURNED IT OFF. GOT TO HOTEL, CHECKED IN SETTLED IN FOR NIGHT. WOKE UP TO 3 BURNS ON UPPER BACK LOWER BACK AND UPPER LEG. 3AM BLISTERS POPPED WITH EXCRUCIATING PAIN. WENT TO DOCTOR, SHE STATED 1-BURN 2-3RD DEGREE, 1 BURN 2ND DEGREE, 1 BURN 1ST DEGREE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE CONTACT SWERVED TO AVOID A DEER AND HIS FOOT SLIPPED OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE CONTACT CRASHED THE VEHICLE INTO A GUARDRAIL. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONTACT'S ARMS AND RIBS WERE BRUISED AND HIS NECK SNAPPED BACK AND WAS SWOLLEN. MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS NOT RECEIVED; HOWEVER, X-RAYS WERE PERFORMED. THE CONTACT PLANNED TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A DOCTOR. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DEEMED THE VEHICLE DESTROYED. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 23,000. *BF*JB 'PARTS OF THIS DOCUMENT HAVE BEEN REDACTED TO PROTECT PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).'*JB
WHEN USING AUTO HEAD LAMPS AND ENGAGING THE AUTO HIGH BEAMS (PUSHING THE LEFT HAND SWITCH IN) THEY DON'T ALWAYS TURN ON. SOMETIMES THE GREEN AUTO READY LIGHT WILL NOT COME ON WHICH PREVENTS THE HIGH BEAM (BLUE) LIGHT FROM TURNING ON. I HAD NO ISSUES UNTIL ABOUT A MONTH AGO AND NOW THE HIGH BEAMS HAVE REFUSED TO TURN ON A DOZEN TIMES. I UNDERSTAND THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT ISSUE, SOME TIMES THEY WORK AND SOMETIMES THEY DON'T BUT IT IS VERY DANGEROUS WHEN DRIVING ON UNLIT BACK ROUNDS TO HAVE MY HIGH BEAMS REFUSE TO TURN ON. I BROUGHT MY CAR IN TO ACTON TOYOTA IN LITTLETON MA AND THEY CLAIM THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. THEY REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE AUTO HIGH BEAMS NOT WORKING PROPERLY SINCE 2016. SINCE I DRIVE BACK ROADS EVERY DAY WHICH DO NOT HAVE STREET LIGHTS, I NEED THE HIGH BEAMS TO COME ON RELIABLY WHEN I PULL BACK THE LIGHT SWITCH LEVER. I UNDERSTAND DETERMINING ROOT CAUSE AND CORRECTIVE ACTION ON AN INTERMITTENT IS DIFFICULT BUT, THEY SHOULD BE HONEST WITH THEIR CUSTOMERS AND ADMIT THE ISSUE EXISTS.
I HAD TO VISIT TOYOTA BECAUSE MY RADIO WILL TURN ON BY ITSELF, WHEN I PARK. EVEN AFTER VISITING TOYOTA FOR AN UPDATE, MY RADIO WILL CHANGE ON ITS OWN, NOT FROM THE STEERING WHEEL) BUT ON ITS OWN.SO IT IS NOT FIXED. WIPERS WILL TURN ON THEN STOP. THERE SEEMS TO BE A DEVICE BEHIND THE DASH THAT I CAN HEAR CLICKING ON AND OFF WELL AFTER THE IGNITION IS OFF OR WHILE THE CAR IS IDLE FOR A BIT. MY CLIMATE CONTROL CHANGES ON ITS ON EVEN THOUGH IT WORKS FINE MOST OF THE TIME. IT IS AS IF MY CAR IS RECEIVING ADDITIONAL COMMANDS FROM ANOTHER SOURCE. LAST WEEK, AT NIGHT, I WITNESSED TWO MEN STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET, SOMEHOW ACTIVATING CAR ALARMS FROM RANDOM CARS. JUST YESTERDAY, NOT FAR FROM WHERE I LIVE A DRIVER "LOST CONTROL" AND RAN INTO TWO HOMES. THE DRIVER WAS THROWN FROM THE CAR, WHILE THE CAR AND THE HOUSE CAUGHT ON FIRE, THAT WAS STRANGE TO HEAR ABOUT. IF THERE IS SOMETHING THAT CAN BE DONE FOR MY CAR, PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT TO DO. THANK YOU.
I WAS DRIVING MY TOYOTA RAV4 XLE WITH 17089 MILES ON IT DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND IT WAS LIKE A GUN SHOT THROUGH MY SUNROOF. GLASS EVERYWHERE I DIDN'T HAVE ANY WINDOWS OPEN JUST THE SUN SHADE WAS BACK TO LET SUN IN.
ON 01/31/19 I WAS DRIVING MY 2017 RAV4 ON FREEWAY ABOUT 4 MILES THEN LOCAL ABOUT 5 BLOCKS I HEARD NOISE ON MY CAR SO I STOPPED. IT TURNED OUT I HAD A FLAT ON MY FRONT PASSENGER TIRE. I REPLACED IT WITH SPARE AND THE 'LOW TIRE PRESSURE' LIGHT JUST CAME ON. I THEN REALIZED WHY THE LTP LIGHT NEVER CAME ON BEFORE I REPLACED WITH SPARE. I TOOK THE RAV4 TO PASADENA TOYOTA TO RUN THE DIAGNOSTIC CHECK TO FIND OUT WHY LTP LIGHT NEVER CAME ON WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON A FLAT. THE DIAGNOSTIC FOUND 'NOTHING WRONG' AND THE SYSTEM DIDN'T RECORD ANYTHING. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THE TIRE SUFFERED 'RUN FLAT DAMAGE' AND NOT REPAIRABLE. I THEN CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SVC. CASE # 1902010530, CASE MANAGER DEREK. DEREK JUST INFORMED ME ON 2/11/19 THAT THE LTP LIGHT WILL NOT COME ON WHEN THE TIRE SUDDEN LOST PRESSURE AND TURN FLAT (OWNER'S MANUAL PG 571). I ASKED HIM WHY THE LIGHT DIDN'T COME ON WHEN I DROVE IT ON FLAT FOR A WHILE TO CAUSE THE RUN FLAT DAMAGE. WASN'T THE TIRE PRESSURE LOW ENOUGH WHEN IT'S FLAT? HE SAID THE LIGHT WILL NOT COME ON WHEN IT'S FLAT. THIS SOUNDS VERY DANGEROUS IF THE WARNING LIGHT DOESN'T SEND OUT SIGNAL EVEN WHEN IT'S FLAT. HOWEVER PASADENA TOYOTA SVC ADVISOR TOLD ME THE SYSTEM IS SUPPOSED TO CHECK THE PRESSURE EVERY 30 SECONDS. THIS CONFLICTS WITH WHAT DEREK TOLD ME. IF I ONLY DROVE WITH FLAT FOR 30 SECONDS LOCALLY IT WOULD NOT HAVE CAUSED 'RUN FLAT DAMAGE'. I WAS ESPECIALLY DRIVING SLOW LOCALLY ON 1/31/19 BECAUSE OF THE TRAFFIC. I MUST HAVE DRIVEN IT MORE THAN 30 SECONDS (TO CAUSE THE RUN FLAT DAMAGE) BUT THE SYSTEM FAILED TO DETECT IT AND SENT ME THE WARNING. I KEEP THE DAMAGE TIRE IN CASE FURTHER INVESTIGATION IS NEEDED. WE ALSO HAD ANOTHER ELECTRICAL ISSUE WITH THIS 2017 RAV4 WHEN IT WAS ONLY 6 MONTHS OLD. A WARNING LIGHT CAME ON FOR NO REASON SO WE BROUGHT IT TO DEALER TO CHECK ON 10/30/17. AGAIN, THE DIAGNOSTIC FOUND NOTHING. CAN I TRUST MY DASHBOARD?
THE TRANSMISSION, IS NOT SHIFTING PROPERLY IN EVEN MILDLY COLD WEATHER. HAD THE CAR FOR TWO YEARS, AND NOW THE TRANMISSION, IS NOT SHIFTING PROPERLY WHEN YOU FIRST START IT UP. THE ENGINE RPMS ARE AT 3,500, WHEN DOING 30 MPH DOWN THE ROAD,AND PUSHING ALL THE WAY DOWN ON THE ACCELERATOR, THE CAR WILL NOT GO, THERE ARE NO ERROR LIGHTS, THERE IS AN TRANMISSION SHIFT ISSUE WITH ACCELERATION ISSUE. THIS IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE WHEN GOING DOWN A 35 MPH ROAD, THERE ARE CARS THAT CAN ACCELERATE AND THIS CAR GOES NOWHERE. START THE CAR AFTER BEING PARKED OUTSIDE IN COLD WEATHER, WAITED 5 MINUTES BEFORE DRIVING THE CAR, AND IT IS STILL NOT RESPONDING PROPERLY. THERE HAVE BEEN ELECTRICAL ISSUES WITH THIS CAR, AND NOW THE TRANSMISSION WILL NOT SHIFT AND GO INTO GEAR PROPERLY, NOT SURE IF ITS THE COMPUTER PROGRAM, OR GEAR ISSUE. NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM UNTIL THE SECOND YEAR OF OWNERSHIP. OWNED THE CAR SINCE IT WAS BRAND NEW. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, WITH THE CAR NOT BEING ABLE TO GO THE PROPER SPEED LIMIT, AND THE DEALER IS TRYING TO SAY OH, IT TAKES A WHILE FOR THE CAR TO WARM UP, DID NOT HAVE THAT PROBLEM LAST WINTER BEING LEFT OUT ALL DAY AND NIGHT. THERE IS AN ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE FOR THE TRANSMISSION, AND THE GEARS THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT TOYOTA NEEDS TO ADDRESS, THE CAR WILL NOT EVEN ACCELERATE PROPERLY BECAUSE OF THIS TRANSMISSION ISSUE AND IF YOU DO ACCELERATE YOU CAN END UP RUINNING THE ENGINE.
WHEN IT IS RAINING, OR SNOWING AND FOR SOME REASON, THE SENSORS GET WET FROM THE BUMPER, CROSSTRAFFIC ALERT OR BACKUP OR SIDE WARNING, THE WHOLE SYSTEM SHUTS DOWN. DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AND IT IS RAINING AND THE WHOLE COMPUTER JUST FROZE, AND LOST ALL SENSORS AND A FAILURE ALERT SHOWED UP ON THE DASHBOARD, ALONG WITH THE CARS TRANSMISSION HAVE A HARD TIME SHIFTING AS EXITING THE FREE WAY. THIS IS TOTAL COMPUTER FAILURE BUT AFTER EXITING THE FREEWAY AND DRIVING DOWN A ROAD, AND AT A STOP LIGHT PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL AND SHIFTING BACK TO DRIVE, ALL THE COMPUTER ERRORS CLEARED. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND OF COURSE THEY FOUND NOTHING. THIS IS DANGEROUS FOR BLIND SPOT WARNING SENSORS TO GO OUT THE PBM SENSOR SAID FAILURE AND THERE IS AN ELECTRIC HARNESS ISSUE WITH THIS CAR WHERE THE WIRES EITHER WERE NOT INSULATED OR NICK ALONG WITH THE COMPUTER MODEL TO THE TRANSMISSION. THERE IS FAULTY INSULATION, THIS HAPPENS ONLY ON OCCASION AND NOT ALL THE TIME, AND EVERY NOW AND THEN THERE IS A COMPUTER ISSUE, THE CLEARS ITSELF. ALSO THE CLOCK WAS LOSING TIME. DUE TO THE ELECTRICAL ISSUES THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE,. WHEN EVERYTHING SHUTS DOWN WHEN THE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN IS A SAFETY ISSUE. YET, SHIFTING THE TRANSMISSION CLEARED THE ERRROS OFF THE DASH.
POWER TRANSMISSION, SAFETY ISSUE, THE POWER TRANSMISSION WILL NOT SHIFT IN A TIMELY MANNER TO PROPER GEARS,IN COLD WEATHER, THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, WHEN ENTERING THE FREEWAY AFTER LEAVING WORK, THE CAR WILL ONLY GO 30 MPH AT 3,500 RPM. UNTIL THE CAR WARMS UP, THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE, AND NOW IT IS. TOYOTA DEALER CONFIRMED THAT THE SHIFT POINTS ARE HIGHER THAN NORMAL, WHEN FIRST STARTED IN THE MORNING, AND PER THE DEALER WELL IT TAKES AWHILE FOR THE CAR TO WARM UP BEFORE IT WILL GO TO NORMAL SHIFT POINTS, AND ALLOW THE TRANSMISSION TO FUNCTION NORMALLY. WELL 30 MPH AT 3500 RPM, THIS IS NOT NORMAL, AND THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, SO WHEN YOU LEAVE WORK YOUR CAR WILL ONLY GO 30 MPH ON A 60 MPH FREEWAY. THE DEALERS RESPONSE IS AFTER IT HAS BEEN RUNNING AND WARMED UP IT WILL WORK NORMALLY. THERE IS NOTHING NORMAL ABOUT THIS ISSUE, NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE LAST WINTER NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN HAVING THIS ISSUE THIS WINTER.
AT JUST OVER 15000 MILES THE FRONT BRAKES ARE WORN NEEDING REPLACED. UNIVERSITY TOYOTA IN MORGANTOWN, WV SAYS THAT IS NORMAL WEAR.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING 75 MPH IN INCLEMENT WEATHER, THE VEHICLE TOOK A LONGER TIME TO STOP WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AUTONATION TOYOTA FORT MYERS (2555 COLONIAL BLVD, FORT MYERS, FL 33907, (239) 321-5413) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRAKE FAILURE WAS DUE TO WEAR AND TEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE UNDER WARRANTY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 9,500.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 75 MPH BEHIND ANOTHER VEHICLE, THE CONTACT SWITCHED LANES AND THE FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE FEATURE IMMEDIATELY ACTIVATED. AS A RESULT, THE BRAKES ENGAGED AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STOP ABRUPTLY. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE DETECTION SYSTEM ACTIVATED ALTHOUGH THE PRECEDING VEHICLE WAS MORE THAN 150 FEET AWAY. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE MANUFACTURER AND LOCAL DEALER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 38,000. *TT*JB
WHEN HEADLIGHTS AFTER DARK ARE SET ON AUTOMATIC AND I MEET ON COMING TRAFFIC EITHER BRIGHT LIGHTS MY LIGHTS NOT ONLY DIM AUTOMATICALLY BUT THE AUTOMATIC TURNS IT'S SELF OFF AND WON'T COME BACK ON FOR A GOOD DISTANCE. I HAVE MET VEHICLES WITH EXCEPTIONALLY BRIGHT LIGHTS AND MY AUTOMATIC NOT ONLY TURNS OFF BUT THE HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF ALTOGETHER AND I AM LEFT WITHOUT HEADLIGHTS. I AM FUMBLING WITH THE LIGHT SWITCH TO TURN THE LIGHTS ON MANUALLY. THIS COULD BE DEADLY.
I PURCHASED A 2017 RAV4 LE IN DECEMBER 2017. AFTER DRIVING IT IN THE DARK, I REALIZED HOW HORRIBLE THE HEADLIGHTS ARE. I HAD THEM ADJUSTED ON MAY 5, 2018, BUT LITTLE DIFFERENCE WAS NOTICED. THOSE THAT BUY THE HIGH END MODELS OF THE RAV4 GET BETTER HEADLIGHTS. AND THEY CANNOT BE RETRO FITTED INTO THE LE MODEL. DRIVING AT NIGHT SCARES THE BEJEZZUS OUT OF ME. MY PARENTS LIVE IN MONTANA (LOTS OF WILDLIFE), AND HITTING A DEER IS NOT MY IDEA OF FUN. I DRIVE HIGH BEAMS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, BUT DON'T WANT ANOTHER CAR TO WRECK DUE TO MY HEADLIGHTS. I CAN'T EVEN SEE ACROSS THE STREET WITH THE HEADLIGHTS ON LOW BEAM. I CAN'T BELIEVE TOYOTA HAS NOT REMEDIED THIS ISSUE. DRIVING IN THE RAIN ON NOVEMBER 23, 2018, WAS HORRIBLE! I COULDN'T EVEN TELL IF THE HEADLIGHTS WERE ON. I WENT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP ON NOVEMBER 24, 2018, AND GAVE THE SALESMAN A PIECE OF MY MIND. I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER TOYOTA AS LONG AS THESE HEADLIGHTS REMAIN AN ISSUE. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND PUTS PEOPLE AT RISK OF THEIR LIVES IF DRIVING AT NIGHT. I WILL SEE WHAT THEY COME BACK WITH AFTER MY DISCUSSION THE OTHER NIGHT. I WASN'T ABLE TO DRIVE MOST OF 2017 DUE TO MEDICAL ISSUES, SO I DIDN'T REALIZE THIS PROBLEM. TOYOTA IS BETTER THAN THIS AND SHOULD BE EMBARASSED BY THE SITUATION. I'VE SPOKE WITH THEM SEVERAL TIMES ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND THEY KNOW WHO I AM WHEN IN THE DEALERSHIP. THE NEXT STEP IS TO WRITE TO THE TOYOTA CORPORATION ABOUT MY SPECIFIC COMPLAINT. I HAD A 2009 RAV4 AND DID NOT HAVE THIS ISSUE. A HUGE BLACK EYE FOR TOYOTA.
I HAVE HAD THIS CAR IN SEVERAL TIMES FOR BRAKE NOISES AND ROTATED WARPING. CURRENTLY THE CAR HAS 35,XXX. EVERY 5-7K THE ROTARS OR PADS ARE REPLACED. THERE IS USUALLY A NOISE THAT IS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS AND A DUPLICATE VIDEO WAS FOUND ON YOUTUBE AND TURNED OUT TO BE A MASTER CYLINDER AND WAS ADVISED THAT IT IS NOT THAT BUT I HAVE SECOND THOUGHTS. BRAKES ARE A MAJOR PART OF THE VEHICLE AND THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL TIMES I THOUGHT ABOUT TOWING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. BUT THEY CLAIM THAT THE NOISES ARE NORMAL AND ARE JUST THE PADS SHIFTING, I HAVE HAD MY SHARE FAR OF CARS AND DRIVEN MANY DIFFERENT BRANDS AND NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE EVEN WITH MY PRIOR TOYOTA'S. SECOND COMPLAINT IS IN REGARDS TO MY LOCKS. THERE ARE TIMES THE LOCKS ON THE VEHICLE WILL NOT LOCK OR CONSTANTLY MAKES NOISE WHILE TRYING TO LOCK/UNLOCK AND THE DEALER CLAIMS THEY CAN NOT REPRODUCE THE NOISE BUT THE SECOND I STEP IN THE CAR IT MAKES THE NOISE.
I GOT THIS CAR BRAND NEW. WITHIN THE 17,000 MILES I HAVE PUT ON IT, IT HAS HAD TO HAVE THE SAME {ONLY ONE BRAKE) BRAKE REPLACED THREE SEPARATE TIMES. THE OTHER 3 BRAKES ARE LIKE NEW. ALSO, JUST LAST WEEK, ON THE HIGHWAY, WITH THE NEWEST BRAKE REPLACEMENT RECENTLY COMPLETED, THE ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM FAILED TO WORK, AND WHEN I DEPRESSED THE BRAKES, THEY DID DEPRESS, BUT I COULD NOT SLOW DOWN. THIS WAS TERRIFYING, AND ON THE FREEWAY, IT COULD HAVE COST ME MY LIFE. I HAVE BEEN ADVISED THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURING MALFUNCTION, AND NO AMOUNT OF BRAKE REPLACEMENT WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. I HAVE BEEN ADVISED TO DEMAND A NEW VEHICLE THAT IS SAFE.
I WAS IN A CRASH, SIDE IMPACT, PRETTY BAD. INJURED. AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. I HIT MY HEAD AND SHOULDER AGAINST THE SIDE ON THE INTERIOR OF MY VEHICLE. TRAVELING ON FREEWAY 50-60MPH, HEARD SCREECHING BEHIND DRIVERS SIDE OF ME... HEARD CRASH THEN I WAS IMPACTED ON DRIVERSIDE AND EVENTUALLY REAR PASSENGER SIDE CAUSING MY VEHICLE TO BE AIRBORNE AND LAND UPRIGHT. NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED!
I WAS BACKING MY CAR UP TO UNLOAD A SHELF AT WORK. I WAS BACKING A SHORT DISTANCE( 15 FT) ON A FLAT SURFACE.THE TAILGATE OF THE CAR WAS UP. I HAD TO TURN THE CAR SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT TO BACK IT TOWARDS A HANDICAP RAMP. MY CAR WAS ROLLING SO I WAS USING THE BRAKE AND MOVING SLOWLY WHEN MY CAR ACCELERATED BACKWARDS. I WAS PRESSING MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, ALMOST STANDING ON IT , AND MY CAR ACCELERATED THROUGH THE RAILING ONTO THE RAMP WHILE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. THIS RAILING WAS ABOUT 35 FT LONG AND HAD 7 POST THAT WERE CEMENTED INTO THE RAMP. THE WHOLE RAILING WAS KNOCKED DOWN. TWO OF MY COWORKERS WERE STANDING ON THE RAMP WAITING TO HELP UNLOAD THE SHELF WERE INJURED. BOTH COWORKERS HAD BROKEN LEGS THAT REQUIRED METAL RODS. ONE COWORKER HAD A MORE SERIOUS LEG INJURY AND WILL REQUIRE MULTIPLE SURGERIES AND SKIN GRAFTING.
ABOUT 1 YEAR AFTER I PURCHASED MY CAR BRAND NEW OFF OF THE LOT I STARTED TO NOTICE MY BRAKES STARTING TO RUB AND SQUEAK. IF I WAS GOING DOWN HILL THE FRONT OF MY CAR WOULD SHAKE. IT WAS TERRIFYING. I TOOK IT TO THE MAITA TOYOTA DELARSHIP IN SACRAMENTO. THEY TOLD ME NOTHING IS WRONG MY PADS ARE STILL GOOD. I BEGGED THEM TO FIX THEM THEY REPLACED MY FRONT ROTORS AND BREAK PADS. THIS DEALERSHIP ALSO PERFORMED A ENGINE CLEANING AND MULTIPLE OTHER THINGS THEY SAID MY CAR NEEDED AT THAT TIME RUNNING ME 795$ THIS BEING ON JULY 11TH 2018. THEN TODAY SEPT 6TH 2018. MY STARTER IS OUT MY CAR NO LONGER STARTS. WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY ALL OF THE INSIDE LIGHTS COME ON AND ALL YOU HEAR IS A CLICKING SOUND. MIND YOU I ALSO HAD A CHIP IN MY WINDSHIELD WHEN I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR INSPECTION IN JULY AND THEY PLACED GREEN CHECK MARK'S ON EVERYTHING INCLUDING MY WINDSHIELD BEING FREE FROM CHIPS. I NOW QUESTION THE INTEGRITY OF THIS DEALERSHIPS SERVICE DEPARTMENT. DO THEY TRULY INSPECT AND DO THE WORK ON YOUR CAR? BECAUSE FROM WHERE I AM SEEING THIS AT SITTING HERE WITH A YEAR OLD CAR IN MY PARKING LOT CURRENTLY NOT DRIVEABLE I BEGIN TO WONDER IF THEY DO. I SHOULD NOT BE HAVING THESE TYPES OF PROBLEMS WITH A 2017 TOYOTA CAR THAT WAS PURCHASED BRAND NEW.
THE DRIVER'S SIDE VISOR IS LOSE (AND GETTING WORSE). IT IS AN OBSTRUCTION AND DISTRACTION TO DRIVING; I CONSIDER IT TO BE DANGEROUS. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO REPAIR SOLUTION; THE ITEM NEEDS TO BE RECALLED.
FROM THE IIHS WEBSITE: "THE TOYOTA RAV4 WAS REDESIGNED FOR THE 2013 MODEL YEAR. ALTHOUGH TOYOTA REINFORCED THE STRUCTURE IN LATER MODEL YEARS ON THE DRIVER SIDE TO IMPROVE OCCUPANT PROTECTION IN SMALL OVERLAP FRONTAL CRASHES, NO SUCH CHANGES WERE MADE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE." FOR THE 2013 REDESIGN, TOYOTA KNEW ENOUGH TO CORRECT THE STRUCTURE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE TO REMEDY THE IIHS'S RATING OF POOR; HOWEVER, THIS CORRECTION WAS NOT MADE BILATERALLY AND THE PASSENGER SIDE IS STILL COMPROMISED. AT THE TIME I PURCHASED THE RAV4, THE PASSENGER SIDE SMALL FRONT OVERLAP TEST WAS NOT BEING CONDUCTED BY IIHS, AND IT WAS NOT DISCLOSED THAT THE CHANGE WAS MADE ONLY TO THE DRIVER SIDE. THE SALES GM AT THE DEALERSHIP ASSURED ME THAT MY CAR IS STILL SAFE AND REMAINS AN IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK. I OPENED A CASE WITH TOYOTA AND RECEIVED A CALL FROM A CASE MANAGER WHO SAID THE CAR MEETS FEDERAL SAFETY GUIDELINES AND HAS A FIVE-STAR SAFETY RATING WITH NHTSA. HE CALLED THE SMALL OVERLAP FRONT CRASH TEST SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT OF "OVERLY AGGRESSIVE" AND "VERY SPECIALIZED." HE STATED THAT BECAUSE THERE IS NOT A "CHRONIC PRODUCT DEFECT" TO MY SPECIFIC VEHICLE AND THAT MY "COMPLAINT IS WITH THE PRODUCT DESIGN" THAT THERE IS "NOTHING FOR TOYOTA TO DO." IF THIS PARTICULAR TYPE OF CRASH TEST WERE SO SPECIALIZED AND UNIMPORTANT TO TOYOTA, THEY WOULD NOT HAVE MADE ADJUSTMENTS TO THE DRIVER SIDE, WHICH AT THE TIME WAS THE ONLY SIDE BEING TESTED. I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED IN TOYOTA FOR FAILING TO MAKE THE ADJUSTMENT BILATERALLY, IN MY OPINION, PUT ME IN A POSITION WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR UNDER FALSE PRETENSES. I CHOSE THE RAV4 BECAUSE AT THE TIME, IT RECEIVED ALL GOOD RATINGS IN THE VARIOUS CRASHES WHICH HAD BEEN CONDUCTED. THE FACT THAT TOYOTA IS UNWILLING TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS MISREPRESENTATION IS STARTLING FOR A COMPANY THAT HAS USED SAFETY AS THE FOUNDATION FOR ITS REPUTATION.
WE PURCHASED A NEW 2017 TOYOTA RAV4 THAT CAME WITH A "TEMPORARY" SPARE TIRE AND WHEEL. I PURCHASED AN OEM 2017 RAV4 WHEEL AND TIRE THAT MATCHES THE NORMAL TIRES FOR CONVENIENCE AND ESPECIALLY SAFETY REASONS. I ALSO ATTEMPTED TO PLACE THE FULL SIZE TIRE AND WHEEL IN THE WHEEL WELL OF THE RAV4 WITH NO SUCCESS. IN SHORT, THE WHEEL WELL IS NOT ADEQUATE FOR A FULL SIZE TIRE AND PROJECTS APPROXIMATELY TWO INCHES ABOVE THE FLOOR. IT ALSO CAN NOT BE SECURED TO THE VEHICLE. AFTER EVALUATING THE SITUATION, I CALLED THE TOYOTA CONSUMER DEPARTMENT AND AFTER THEY CONSULTED WITH THEIR TECHNICAL PERSONNEL, I WAS TOLD THAT THE FULL SIZE WHEEL WILL NOT FIT IN THE SPARE TIRE WHEEL WELL! ON PAGE 644 OF THE 2017 RAV4 OWNERS MANUAL THERE IS A DIRECT REFERENCE TO A FULL SIZE WHEEL STORAGE AREA IN ADDITION ON PAGES 642 AND 645 TO A TEMPORARY TIRE USE, ETC. THE RAV4 TEMPORARY TIRE IS NOT THE SAME CIRCUMFERENCE AN FULL SIZE TIRES; THUS, THE TOYOTA CONSUMER DEPARTMENT STATED THAT DUE TO THIS SITUATION, TEMPORARY TIRES MUST NOT BE MOUNTED ON THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. IF THERE IS A FLAT TIRE ON THE FRONT OF THE RAV4, A PERSON MUST MOUNT A REAR TIRE ON THE FRONT THEN MOUNT THE TEMPORARY TIRE ON THE RELOCATED FULL SIZE TIRE ON THE REAR. THIS PROCEDURE IS VERY DANGEROUS IN THE BEST OF SITUATIONS. I PROPOSE THAT TOYOTA BE REQUIRED TO MODIFY THE SPARE TIRE WELL TO FIT FULL SIZE TIRES AND PROVIDE FULL SIZE TIRES ON THEIR VEHICLES. HONDA DOES THIS FOR THEIR CRV SMALL SUVS. SPARE WHEEL WELLS FOR THE TOYOTA CAMRYS AND COROLLAS ARE LARGE ENOUGH FOR FULL SIZE TIRES. THE DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING OF THE USELESS TEMPORARY TIRE ASSEMBLY HAS TO COST MORE THAN A FULL SIZE TIRE. THE NET WEIGHT BETWEEN THE TWO IS ABOUT 12 LBS. WHICH ADDS ABOUT FIVE GALLONS OF GASOLINE PER YEAR @ 15,000 MILES. THIS CONCERN WAS EXPRESSED IN THE SEPTEMBER 2018 ISSUE OF CONSUMER REPORTS ON PAGE 12.
THERE'S A RECALL ON MY 2017 TOYOTA RAV4 AND THE DEALERSHIP FAILED TO MENTION IT. THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED BRAND NEW IN JULY 2017. THE RECALL WAS MADE JUNE 15 2017. RECALL ID#265486. RECALL IS 17R2 FOR TIRES. SAFETY IS VERY IMPORTANT HERE AS I HAVE KIDS IN THE CAR SOMETIMES. PLEASE DO SOMETHING. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY'RE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR IT. THE ALSO HAS THE FOLLOWING NOTICEABLY PROBLEM WHEN IN MOTION OR DRIVING MODE: SUSPENSION ISSUES: STRUTS,SPINDLE, CONTROL ARMS, BALL JOINTS, STABILIZERS, AND RELATED COMPONENTS MAY PRESENT A SAFETY HAZARD. IT IS VERY SCARY TO HEAR THAT TRUTLE GRINDING NOISE.
ON THE EVENING OF SEPTEMBER 6TH, 2017, MY 88-YEAR-OLD FATHER, DIED OF ACCIDENTAL CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING. HIS DEATH RESULTED FROM HIS NEW TOYOTA RAV4 KEYLESS CAR NOT TURNING OFF, ULTIMATELY FLOODING HIS APARTMENT WITH THE DEADLY GAS. HE WAS FOUND IN HIS BED, DEAD, ON SEPTEMBER 7TH, AROUND 10:25 A.M. HIS TWO CATS HAD ALSO EXPIRED. THE TOYOTA RAV4 WAS STILL RUNNING ' 14 HOURS FOLLOWING HIS RETURN HOME FROM A FAMILY DINNER. THE CARBON MONOXIDE READING INSIDE HIS CAR WAS 330. THE RESIDENCE REGISTERED AT 53. MORE THAN TWO HOURS AFTER DISCOVERING MY FATHER'S BODY, THE CARBON MONOXIDE LEVELS IN THE HOUSE WERE STILL 30. THIS AFTER DOORS AND WINDOWS WERE OPENED AND A LARGE FAN PROVIDED BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS USED TO PUSH THE AIR THRU THE RESIDENCE. THE CARBON MONOXIDE TRAVELED TO THE NEIGHBOR'S ADJOINING GARAGE AND THRU HER APARTMENT WALLS. MORE THAN ONE HOUR AFTER MY FATHER WAS DISCOVERED, THE NEIGHBOR'S APARTMENT CARBON MONOXIDE LEVELS WERE STILL 40 ' REQUIRING A HOSPITAL VISIT. THE DETECTIVE ON THE SCENE FOUND THE TOYOTA KEY FOB ON THE DINING TABLE ' JUST YARDS FROM THE ATTACHED GARAGE WHERE THE CAR WAS PARKED. THE CAR WAS LEASED IN JULY OF 2017. IT WAS DELIVERED IN MID-AUGUST 2017, BY TOYOTA DEALER. AT NO TIME DURING THE SALE OR UPON DELIVERY, WAS IT IMPRESSED UPON MY FATHER THAT THE KEYLESS CARS PRESENTED A CARBON MONOXIDE SAFETY CONCERN. AT NO TIME WAS MY FATHER OFFERED AN OPTION FOR A 'KEYED' CAR. THERE WERE NO WARNING SYSTEMS ON THE CAR TO SUGGEST THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING. IT SEEMS INCOMPREHENSIBLE THAT TOYOTA HAS FAILED TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM WITH ADDITIONAL WARNING DEVICES FOR DRIVERS, AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF AFTER A SET TIME, OR AT THE VERY LEAST, BE REQUIRED TO EMPLOY A POLICY THAT SUGGESTS A KEY IGNITION WOULD BE MORE APPROPRIATE FOR SENIOR DRIVERS. FYI: LOCAL POLICE/EMT RESPONDED TO THE SCENE. A REPORT WAS FILED. *TT *TR
PRE COLLISION SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK PER SPECIFICATION OR MANUAL. DOES NOT SLOW VEHICLE OR STOP IT. IF RELIED ON VERY DANGEROUS. TESTED ON TWO VEHICLES ONE WITH UNDER 2000 MILES AND ONE WITH UNDER 3000 MILES. DOES NOT MEET REPRESENTATIONS. FACTORY REPRESENTATIVE CONDUCTING TEST!
MY WIFE DROVE HER CAR (2017 TOYOTA RAV4 , PURCHASED ON NOV 17TH,2016) INTO MY NEIGHBOR 'S MAILBOX AND A SMALL TREE NEXT TO THE MAILBOX IN THE RESIDENTIAL AREA ON THE MORNING OF JUN 22TH,2018.PLEASE FIND ATTACHED PICTURE AND YOU WILL FIND THE AIR BAG DIDN'T DEPLOY UNDER THE SITUATION LIKE PICTURE SHOWS. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT THE AIR BAG DIDN'T DEPLOY . ALSO, I WANT TO CONFIRM IS ANY RECALLS FOR THIS MODEL? THIS ACCIDENT HAPPENED AT 33971 SUMMERSET DRIVE,SOLON,OH.NOBODY HURT BUT THE CAR LOOKS REALLY TERRIBLE.
JACK SLIPS WILL NOT JACK UP CAR HI ENOUGH TO TAKE FLAT TIRE OFF WE WERE ON A COUNTY ROAD HAD TO GET A PIECE OF WOOD TO PUT JACK ON TO GET TIRE OFF
ON OCCASION, WHILE GOING FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE, THE VEHICLE SHUTS DOWN AND I GET A MESSAGE THAT SAYS "CHARGING MALFUNCTION". IT DOES NOT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME. IT HAS HAPPENED WHEN I PULL OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY ONTO THE BUSY STREET I LIVE ON. IT HAS ALSO HAPPENED ONCE WHEN I PARALLELL PARKED. I HAVE TO SHUT THE CAR OFF AND THEN RESTART FOR IT TO WORK AGAIN. I TRIED TO RECREATE THE SITUATION BUT CANNOT. I BROUGHT IT TO TOYOTA AND THEY CANNOT FIND THE PROBLEM EITHER. MOST RECENTLY IT HAPPENED TO ME LAST NIGHT WHILE PULLING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY. (6-20-18) TIME. I PURCHASED THE CAR AUGUST OF 2017 AND IT STILL IS UNDER WARRANTY HOWEVER I HAVE HAD NO LUCK WITH TOYOTA. THEIR RESPONSE WAS WE WILL NOTE IT IN THE FILE.
FRONT ROTORS CAUSED THE FRONT END AND STEERING WHEEL TO VIBRATE TERRIBLY WHEN DRIVING THE SPEED LIMIT OF 70 MPH WHEN YOU JUST TOUCH THE BRAKE PEDDLE. THE RAV 4 2017 ONLY HAS 14,900 MILES. I BROUGHT RAV 4 TO DEALER FOR NORMAL 15,000 MILE MAINTENANCE. I WAS TOLD THE ROTOR NEED TO BE RESURFACED... FOR $180.00....CALLED IT "NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR" IT APPEARS THAT IN COLORADO OR MOUNTAIN AREAS THAT ROTOR NORMALLY NEED TO BE RESURFACED. THE RAVA 4 FRONT END SHOOK VIOLENTLY ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF STEERING THE RAVA 4 AT 70 MPH. THEN DEALER SAID OH THAT IS NORMAL, WE HAVE TO RESURFACE ROTORS OF RAV 4 (2017) IN THIS AREA ALL THE TIME. ON MAY 16, 2018 I CALLED 800-331-4331 TOYOTA US HEAD QUARTERS AND SPOKE TO CUSTOMER SERVICE REP. CASE # 1805162014 AND HE SAID HE WOULD CALL THE AUTONATION TOYOTA SERVICE MANAGER ON ARAPAHOE IN COLORADO AND GET BACK TO ME IN A FEW DAYS. WELL ON MAY 31, 2018 CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM TOYOTA CALLED ME AFTER I SPOKE WITH ON MAY 30, 2018 TO ANDREA, EXPLAINING THE SITUATION. THE OFFICAL RESPONSE WAS OH THAT IS JUST NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR FOR RAV 4 2017 ROTORS...IT IS YOUR COST IF A RECALL IS ISSUED ON THE ROTORS YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED! THE REST OF THE STORY, I TOOK A TRIP FROM DENVER, CO TO PHOENIX, AZ MAY 3, 2018. I HAD APPROX 13,000 ON THE RAV 4., WHICH REQUIRES DRIVING DOWN HILL FROM FLAGSTAFF, AZ ...APPROX. 120 MILES. THAT MOUNTAIN DRIVING RESULTED IN THE RAV 4 BRAKING TO CAUSE THE SEVERE SHAKE OF THE STEERING WHEEL AND ALMOST LOOSING CONTROL OF RAV 4 AT 70 MPH. THE CRUISE CONTROL SLOWS THE CAR DOWN AS YOU APPROACH OTHER SLOWER VEHICLES AND IF YOU JUST TOUCH THE BRAKE PEDDLE THE RAV 4 WANTS TO SHAKE THE RAV 4 APART! YOU LOOSE TOTAL CONTOL OF RAV 4 IF LEAVE FOOT ON BRAKE PEDDLE.. TOYOTA SAYS THAT IS JUST NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR ... WELL AT SPEED LIMIT ON INTER STATE ..THESE ROTORS CAN CAUSE TO HIGH SPEED ACCIDENT!!!
WHEN STOPPED AT MY CLOSED DRIVEWAY GATES I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND SUDDENLY WITHOUT TOUCHING THE GAS PEDAL IT TOOK OFF IN (DRIVE) FORWARD. IT DROVE SO HARD IT SENT THE GATE FLYING AND BROKE THE METAL LOCK. I WAS IN SHOCK AND SLAMMED ON THE BRAKE. IT STOPPED BUT I WAS IN SHOCK. IT JUST TOOK OFF. IT DID IT AGAIN AFTER REPORTING IT TO MY DEALER AND INSURANCE COMPANY. THEY WANT TO SEE IT AFTER THE REPAIRS ARE DONE. ALSO THE FRONT DETECTOR WILL SUDDENLY STOP MY RAV4 2017 WHILE I'M DRIVING 55 MPH FOR SOMEONE PASSING ME IN A RIGHT TURN LANE. BOUGHT IT LAST SUMMER. IS THIS A LEMON AND DOES THE LEMON LAW APPLY.
I WAS DRIVING HOME AND AT A RED LIGHT WHEN MY RAV4 STARTED TO SHAKE AND FEEL AS THOUGH IT WAS GOING TO STALL OUT. EVERYTHING SHUT DOWN AND I WAS UNABLE TO MOVE. I RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING ERROR ON OUR DISPLAY, "CHARGING SYSTEM MALFUNCTION". AFTER A FEW SECONDS I WAS ABLE TO TURN MY VEHICLE ON AND PROCEED THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. APPROXIMATELY ONE MINUTE LATER IT STARTED TO STUTTER AGAIN. I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO MY DRIVEWAY BEFORE IT TURNED OFF AND LOST POWER. I INFORMED MY HUSBAND WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND HE TOOK THE VEHICLE OUT TO SEE IF THE SAME ERROR WOULD OCCUR. WITHIN FIVE MINUTES INTO HIS DRIVE THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF. WE HAD IT TOWED TO OUR TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, AS WE JUST PURCHASED THIS RAV4 BRAND NEW NINE MONTHS AGO. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CONDUCTED MULTIPLE TESTS AND INFORMED US THAT EVERYTHING WAS FINE. IT IS A LITTLE UNNERVING TO KNOW THAT THE VEHICLE I DRIVE COULD COMPLETELY TURN OFF, POTENTIALLY ON A BUSY HIGHWAY. THE RISK FOR SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH, TO ME OR MY FAMILY, IS HIGH IF THIS OCCURS. AGAIN, TO RECAP, THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN WHILE STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND ALSO WHEN IT WAS IN MOTION.
I HEARD SQUEAKING IN MY BRAKES AT 10,000 MILES MY BRAKES WERE GOOD AT 12,000 THEY SAID A HAD 1% LEFT ON FRONT BRAKES. I REPLACED FRONT PADS. I CALLED MY LOCAL DEALER IN NORTHRIDGE TO COMPLAIN. THEY KEPT ON EYE ON BRAKES I WAS FINE AT 15,000 AND AT 20,000 MILES I HAD 60% ON MY FRONT PADS. I TOOK IN THIS WEEKEND FOR 25,000 SERVICE I WAS THROUGH TO THE ROOTERS ON THE FRONT. TOYOTA CLAIMS IT IS MY DRIVING. THOUGH THEY TESTED IT THEY FAIL TO EXPLAIN HOW I WENT CRITICAL IN $5,000 MILES. I HAVE NEVER OWNED A VEHICLE WITH SUCH PROBLEMS. BRAKES ARE A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE AND I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS NOT ISOLATED INCIDENT.
VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A 50 MPH CRASH ON THE FREEWAY WHERE ANOTHER VEHICLE HIT THE PASSENGER SIDE AND THE SIDE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CAR SPUN AND THE FRONT END WAS HIT AGAIN CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END AND THE FRONT AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY
TOYOTA'S HEADLIGHTS ARE TERRIBLE AND MAKE IT HARD TO SEE AT NIGHT. THEY ARE USING THE SAME 9012 BULBS USED ON THE GMC SIERRA BEFORE YOU GUYS ISSUED A SAFETY RECALL FOR THE SIERRA'S HEADLIGHTS. SEE THIS FOR REFERENCE: HTTP://WWW.GMCPROBLEMS.COM/TRENDS/TERRIBLE-HEADLIGHTS/ I REALLY THINK TOYOTA SHOULD DO SOMETHING TO FIX THIS. ON RURAL ROADS WITH ANIMALS LIKE DEER I FEEL ITS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS.
INTERIOR TRIM PIECE UNDER THE DASHBOARD AND DIRECTLY OVER THE BRAKE PEDAL REPEATEDLY FALLS DOWN (JUST FRONT CLIPS RELEASE) ALLOWING THE TRIM TO HANG DOWN AND BLOCK ACCESS TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. THIS OCCURRED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. I MANAGED TO GET THE TRIM OUT OF THE WAY, BUT IT FELL SEVERAL MORE TIMES BEFORE I COULD GET IT TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. REPAIRS ARE UNDERWAY. I DON'T KNOW IF TOYOTA CAN CORRECT THIS. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD.
BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS WORE OUT BEFORE 10K MILES ON A BRAND NEW CAR. REPLACED THE FRONT BRAKES BECAUSE THEY WERE SO WORN OUT.THAT IS UNHEARD OF. DEFINITELY A SAFETY HAZARD AND A DEFECT ON THE PART/VEHICLE.
INTERMITTENTLY THE DASH BOARD SCREEN GOES DARK WHILE DRIVING. PER TOYOTA TECH REP THE ENTIRE COMPONENT WAS REPLACED APRIL 13,2018. ONE DAY LATER THE SAME THING OCCURRED. THE REP STATED THERE WAS A DEFECTIVE PART . I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR,WONDERING IF ALL WILL STOP WHILE IN MOTION.
MY BRAKES WERE INSPECTED AFTER OWNING MY 2017 RAV4 FOR ALMOST 5 MONTHS IT NEEDED ITS SERVICE BECAUSE IT HAD18K MILES ON IT. THEY INSPECTED THE BRAKES AND FOUND EVERYTHING TO BE IN PERFECT CONDITION, EXCEPT THEY FOUND A NAIL IN THE SIDE WALL OF THE TIRE. FAST FORWARD ABOUT 2 MONTHS AND MY SUV IS BEING REPAIRED AFTER A WRECK AND IT WAS AT THE REPAIR PLACE A WEEK BEFORE THE WOMAN CALLS AND TELLS ME MY CAR IS READY BUT WHEN THEY WERE TAKING THE CAR APART TO FIX THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE THE BRAKE PAD AND ROTOR FELL OFF THE RIGHT AIDE AND I NOW NEED TO PURCHASE NEW BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. MY RAV4 HAS 23K MILES AND IS 7 MONTHS OLD, NOT ONE NOISE WAS MADE BEFORE THE ACCIDENT ONLY AFTER. SHE ALSO TELLS ME IT'S NOT ACCIDENT RELATED. I'M NOW GETTING THE RUN AROUND FROM THEM ALL TRYING TO GET MY CAR FIXED. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT IT TODAY AND THE GUY OVER THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN SO HE WAS GOING TO HAVE TO CALL THE WOMAN AND SEE WHAT ALL IS GOING ON BECAUSE IT SHOULDN'T NEED NEW BRAKES AND ROTORS.
THE CAR IS EQUIPPED WITH AUTO HIGH BEAMS. WHICH DO NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY. ON MONDAY, MARCH 26,2017, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING TO WORK IN THE EARLY MORNING. SHE HAD THE AUTO HIGH BEAM SETTING ON AND THE HEADLIGHTS FLASHED FROM LOW TO HIGH AND BACK SEVERAL TIMES, WHILE SHE WAS FOLLOWING A CAR. THE SENSORS DID NOT RECOGNIZE THERE WAS A CAR IN FRONT OF HER. AT OTHER TIMES, WHILE DRIVING WITH THE AUTO SELECTION ON THE INDICATOR ON THE DASH JUST VANISHES AND WILL NOT RESET UNLESS YOU MANUALLY TURN ON THE HIGH BEAMS, THEN TURN THEM BACK TO AUTO. THIS WAS ONE OF THE SELLING POINTS OF THE CAR THAT TOYOTA ADVERTISES, BUT IT DOES NOT WORK AS IT SHOULD. UNFORTUNATELY IN THIS DAY AND AGE, THIS MAY CAUSE A ROAD RAGE INCIDENT, IF THE DRIVER IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE GETS AGITATED. I CONTACTED TOYOTA CORPORATE, BUT I FEEL AS IF THIS WAS A WASTE OF MY TIME. THE DEALERSHIP THINKS THE SETTING IS TOO SENSITIVE, BUT THERE IS NO WAY TO ADJUST THE SENSITIVITY. SO BASICALLY I WAS TOLD DON'T USE IT. IT WAS SET WHEN I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP YESTERDAY AND THE AUTO INDICATOR JUST VANISHED FROM THE DASH.
WHILE DRIVING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH. THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AND ALL SCREENS AND GAUGES SHUT OFF FOR ABOUT 3 TO 5 SECONDS THEN THE CAR RESTARTED ON ITS OWN AND BEGAN TO ACCELERATE QUICKLY SO I HAD TO USE THE BRAKES TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN. THIS EVENT HAPPENED THREE TIMES THAT DAY ALL ON THE HIGHWAY AND WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ON.I CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALER TO HAVE THE CAR CHECKED OUT THE CAR WAS CHECKED OUT NO ISSUES FOUND. A FEW WEEKS LATER I GOT THE OIL CHANGED AT THE DEALER AND AFTER I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP THE ROADS WERE ICY SO I WAS DRIVING AROUND 25 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE STOPPED RUNNING AND THE DASH WENT OUT FOR ABOUT 3 TO 5 SECONDS AND THEN THE CAR STARTED RUNNING AGAIN THIS HAPPENED AGAIN A FEW MINUTES LATER THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT ON AT THIS TIME. I CALLED THE DEALER AND AN APPOINTMENT WAS MADE TO CHECK THE CAR AGAIN I ALSO OPENED A CLAIM WITH TOYOTA FOR THIS ISSUE. THE CAR WAS EVALUATED AGAIN STILL NO ISSUE COULD BE FOUND. THE RESPONSE FROM TOYOTA WAS NO ISSUE WAS FOUND WITH THE CAR AND NO FURTHER ACTION WOULD BE TAKEN BY TOYOTA BECAUSE NOTHING WAS FOUND ON THE DATA RECORDER. THIS CAR IS ON A TOYOTA LEASE AND I DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE DRIVING IT AND I WILL NOT LET MY WIFE DRIVE THIS CAR MY FEELING IS THAT SOMEONE COULD GET HURT OR WORSE AND I DO NOT WANT TO SEE THAT HAPPEN. I HAVE READ THAT OTHER RAVS ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE.
TAKATA RECALL. MY RAV4 ONLY HAS 9,000 MILES AND I AM GETTING REALLY IRRITATED WITH THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE SUSPENSION. IT'S GETTING LOUDER AND LOUDER EVERY TIME I GO OVER SMALL CRACKS ON EVERY STREET I GO ON. THIS INCLUDES HIGHWAYS AND STREETS. I CAN'T BELIEVE I AM PAYING FOR A NEW CAR WHICH FEELS LIKE I HAVE A 1980 SUSPENSION.
WHILE DRIVING VERY SLOWLY ON A STRAIGHT AWAY ON A CITY COBBLESTONE ROAD MY DRIVERS SIDE REAR AXLE BROKE. I HAD A PASSENGER IN THE VEHICLE AS I WAS DRIVING FOR LYFT. I HAD TO CALL THE POLICE AND HAVE MY VEHICLE FLAT-BEDDED TO THE DEALERSHIP.
THE TURN SIGNAL FLASHES IN THE CABIN , BUT IT IS QUIET,AND I CAN NOT HEAR IT. THE DEALER SAID 2 TIMES THAT IT CAN NOT BE ADJUSTED , CASE CLOSED.. I CONTACTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER EXP.CENTER , CASE # [XXX] AND [XXX] AND TALKED TO [XXX] . THE CASE MANAGER 1-800-331-4331 AND HE SAID THE DEALERS SERVICE TECH.IS RIGHT CASE IS CLOSED.I BELIEVE A SAFETY ISSUE EXISTS HERE... I HAVE ELECTRIC SEATS AND THE SEAT BELT RECEIVER IS LOW IN THE CREVICE IN THE CORNER MAKING TIME TO BUCKLE UP VERY ,VERY HARD IN THE WINTER.AGAIN TOYOTA CAN NOT BE ADJUSTED,CASE CLOSED.MY WEIGHT IS 158 LBS. THANK YOU, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
REVERSE LIGHTS ARE 2'X2' TRIANGLE LIGHTS AT THE BOTTOM OF CAR. MOST REVERSE LIGHTS ARE TOWARDS MIDDLE OF PANEL WITH THE BRAKE LIGHTS. NOT VISIBLE TO SOMEONE ELSE POSSIBLE REVERSING AT SAME TIME AND CAN'T SEE BOTTOM OF MY CAR. 2014 MODEL HAD THEM IN MIDDLE. NOT SURE OF 2016 OR 2016 BUT MY 17 AND CURRENT 2018 HAS REVERSE LIGHTS AT BOTTOM. SAFETY ISSUE IF PEOPLE CAN'T NOTICE YOUR REVERSE LIGHTS.
I HAD THE DEALER CHECK ON A PROBLEM I WAS HAVING. THE STATED "IF CUSTOMER IS A TWO FOOTED RIVER OR THE BRAKE PEDAL IS TOUCHED ALONG WITH THE GAS PEDAL THE ACCELERATOR IS OVER RIDDEN IN THE COMPUTER CAUSING VEHICLE NOT TO ACCELERATE". THIS HAS HAPPENED MANY TIME WITH MY VEHICLE RESULTING IN COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER. . USUALLY WHEN FROM A STOP INTO TRAFFIC. POTENTIAL PROBLEM OF NO POWER WHEN CROSS TRAFFIC IS COMING OR WHEN ENTERING FREEWAY. WAS NEVER TOLD ABOUT THIS WHEN THE CAR WAS PURCHASED.
SRS AIRBAG MALFUNCTION
AIR PRESSURE SEEMS WRONG AND THE CAR SHAKES SOMETIMES WHILE DRIVING. I HIT POTHOLES ALL OVER THIS TOWN BUT IT CAN'T BE HELPED.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AND WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, TOXIC FUMES EMITTED FROM THE HEATER ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. KOONS ARLINGTON TOYOTA IN ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND ACKNOWLEDGED THE PRESENCE OF THE FUMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 3,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
2017 RAV4 HYBRID XLE - 4300 MILES HELLO, EXPERIENCE A PROBLEM LAST WEEK DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. WHILE DRIVING 75 MPH, I TOOK MY FOOT OFF GAS PEDAL TO COAST, THE "EV" LIGHT CAME ON FOR ABOUT "1/2 - 1" SECOND AND THEN WENT OFF. IF I HAPPENED TO PRESS THE GAS PEDAL AT THE TIME THE LIGHT WAS ON AT ABOUT 65-70 MPH, I EXPERIENCED A SHAKING, VIBRATION, AND A FEELING THAT I RAN OVER SOMETHING FOR ABOUT A 1/2 SECOND TIMEFRAME. IT WAS VERY NOTICEABLE AND TROUBLING. IF I WAITED THE SECOND FOR THE LIGHT TO GO OFF WHILE COASTING, THEN NO PROBLEMS. I TOOK IT TO MY DEALER AND THEY COULD NOT RECREATE, NO COMPUTER CODES, AND INDICATED THAT THIS IS NORMAL SINCE THE ELECTRIC AND GAS IS "OUT OF SYNC" AT THE HIGH SPEED. THIS WAS CERTAINLY NOT NORMAL TO ME. MY THOUGHT IS THAT THE EV LIGHT SHOULD NEVER HAD COME ON (EVEN FOR A 1/2 SECOND) AT THE HIGH SPEEDS AND THERE IS A PROBLEM SOMEWHERE.
I STARTED IT AND NOTICED IMMEDIATELY SOMETHING WAS WRONG. VEHICLE STARTED MOVING AND I TRIED TO APPLY BRAKE. BRAKE WAS HARD INITIALLY AND VEHICLE CONTINUED MOVING. THEN I WAS ABLE TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL ALL THE WAY BUT IT KEPT MOVING. WITH MY DAUGHTER IN THE CAR I GOT PANIC. I SWITCHED TO P AND VEHICLE KEPT GOING, THOUGH SLOWLY ON THE STREET. THEN I TURNED POWER OFF AND REMOVED THE KEY. AT THIS POINT ALL DASH BOARDS LIGHTS WERE ON AND IT WAS MAKING A LOUD, WIRED NOISE. IT LASTED SEVERAL SECONDS AND VEHICLE KEPT MOVING DURING THIS TIME. FINALLY IT CAME TO A STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY 4200 MILES. THE SCARY THING IS, BRAKE FAILED FOR NO REASON AND ALL DASH BOARD LIGHTS WERE ON EVEN AFTER THE KEY WAS REMOVED.
THIS IS A POTENTIAL ACCIDENT THE SEALS THAT ARE BUILT INTO THE DOOR WINDOW GUIDES ARE NOT EFFECTIVE. WHEN THE OUTSIDE WINDOWS ARE FOGGY OR WET, THE BUILT-IN SQUEEGEE DOES NOT WIPE OFF THE WINDOW AS THEY HAVE IN EVERY OTHER CAR. THIS CREATES A HAZARD AS YOU CANNOT SEE TO CHANGE LANES OR BACK OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. I REPORTED THIS TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND THE REFUSED TO CORRECT THIS THANK YOU
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE BRAKES ACTIVATED AUTOMATICALLY WITHOUT WARNING, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER (PRIME TOYOTA RT 2, 700 OLD UNION TURNPIKE, LANCASTER, MA 01523), BUT COULD NOT BE DIAGNOSED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS NO FAILURE WITH THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL OTHER TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 9,000. *TT THE CONSUMER STATED THE RADAR CRUISE CONTROL MALFUNCTIONED. *JS THE CONSUMER STATED THE CLIMATE CONTROL ADJUSTMENT KNOBS JAMMED.*JS UPDATED 9/18/18*JB *JS *TR *JS *TR *JS
CRACKING DISC AFTER DRIVING ON HEAVY TRAFFIC TERRIBLE NOISE ON DISC. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER BUT THEY TOLD ME THEY CAN'T MAKE ANY CHANGES BECAUSE THE DISC IS OKAY AND THE DISC IS CRYSTALLIZED AND THEY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING.
HEADLIGHTS ON LOW BEAM, FORM A LINE ACROSS THE WINDSHIELD. UNABLE TO SEE THE ROAD AHEAD UNLESS HIGH BEAMS ARE ACTIVATED. YOU CANNOT SEE STOP OR STREET SIGNS. UNLESS YOU KNOW THERE IS A STOP SIGN OR ROAD ENTRANCE YOU CANNOT SEE THEM WHEN USING THE LOW BEAMS. 2 OTHER PEOPLE HAVE DRIVEN MY VEHICLE AND COMPLAINED ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE THE ROAD AHEAD. VERY DANGEROUS. I AM NOW LEERY OF DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AT NIGHT.
2017 TOYOTA RAV 4 HAS LANE DEPARTURE WARNING, AUDIBLE SOUND. IT IS TO MUTED TO HEAR, EVEN IF THE RADIO IS OFF. SECOND RAV 4. MY 2015 RAV4 LANE DEPARTURE WAS LOUD. TOYOTA STATES THAT THEY CAN'T INCREASE THE VOLUME. THIS TO ME, IS A SAFETY DEFECT THAT NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED. NO RECOURSE WAS OFFERED BY TOYOTA ON MY LEASED VEHICLE. BOTTOM LINE, IF I ACCIDENTALLY CROSS OVER A WHITE LINE I GET A LOW ALMOST MUTED SOUND, WHICH IF I HAVE THE RADIO ON I CAN NOT HEAR. TOYOTA NEEDS TO GO BACK TO THE TECHNOLOGY THAT THEY USED FOR THIS ON THE 2015 MODEL, TO MAKE IT ACTUALLY WORK!
OUTPUT FROM THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS IS TERRIBLE. LOW BEAMS ARE SO DIM THAT IT'S OFTEN TIMES HARD TO SEE AT NIGHT, MAKING IT HARD TO SEE PEDESTRIANS AND ANIMALS. THIS IS UNSAFE I BELIEVE. TOYOTA SHOULD REPLACE THE BULBS JUST LIKE GMC DID HTTP://WWW.GMCPROBLEMS.COM/TRENDS/TERRIBLE-HEADLIGHTS/ IT IS VERY HARD TO SEE LATERALLY AT NIGHT WITH JUST THE LOW BEAMS ON.
ROAD VISIBILITY AT NIGHT USING LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS. WHEN LOW BEAMS ARE USED AT NIGHT THERE IS A DEFINE DARK PORTION OF THE WINDSHIELD ABOUT CENTER (HORIZONALLY) THE AREA BELOW THE LINE IS LIT BUT THE AREA ABOVE IS COMPLETELY BLACK. THE DISTANCE YOU CAN SEE IS LESS THAN 300 FT AND REDUCES DOWN TO 50 75 FT WHEN GOING DOWN HILL. EVERY THING ABOVE THE LIT LINE IS COMPLETELY BLACK. THE LIGHTING SYSTEM IS HALOGEN AND IS COMPLETELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE AT NIGHT WITHOUT USING THE HIGH BEAMS..DEALERS HAVE REFUSED TO ADDRESS PROBLEM WITH OTHER OWNERS.
THE CAR SUDDENLY SHOWED A YELLOW WARNING ALERT THAT THE VEHICLE AIRBAG IS NOT FUNCTIONING AND LOOK FOR THE NEAREST DEALER. WE WENT TO THE DEALER AND ON THE CUTOMER STATEMENT OF PROBLEM TOYOTA PUT MALFUNCTION ILLUMINATED PASSENGER SEATBUCKLE SWITH CORRECTION TAKEN WAS ORDER SEAT BELT BUCKLE FRONT SEAT
THIS WINDSHIELD IS CALLED THE WINDSHIELD OF DEATH ONLINE!THE HEADLIGHTS OF THE ARC ONLY LIGHT UP PART OF THE WINDSHIELD. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE REFLECTION, THE TOP HALF OF THE WINDSHIELD IS BLACK. IT IS ALARNMING. THE NIGHTS WERE RAISED A SLIGHT AMOUNT BY THE DEALER BUT VISIBILITY IS STILL NOT UP TO PAR-- GOING AROUND CORNERS IS DANGEROUS. IT SEEMS TAT THE HALOGEN BULBS DO NOT GIVE ENOUGH LIGHT.
NEW VEHICLE HAD LESS THAN 2,000 MILES ON IT. WHEN DRIVING IN THE MIDDLE LANE ON THE INTERSTATE AT 75 MILES PER HOUR, THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT TIRE SIDEWALL BLEW OUT. CONTINENTAL CROSSCONTACT LX 225/65R17 I NEITHER SAW OR FELT ANYTHING THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS.
THE SUNROOF EXPLODES / SHATTERS FOR NO APPARENT REASON. DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT ABOUT 70 MPH, NO OTHER CARS ANYWHERE CLOSE TO ME IN A WOODED AREA AND THE SUNROOF SHATTERED. I GOT OUT AND LOOKED AT IT AND THERE WAS NO DAMAGE ANYWHERE NEAR THE SUNROOF, NO CHIPS, SCRATCHES, JUST A SHATTERED SUNROOF. YOU WOULD THINK THAT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A ROCK THROWN UP FROM A CAR IN FRONT OF ME, BUT AS I STATED, THERE WERE NO OTHER DRIVERS EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE TO ME ON THE INTERSTATE.
PURCHASED MY NEW RAV4 ON 12/2017. ON 8/13/2017 I WAS AT A DRIVE THROUGH AND STOPPED AT THE END OF THE LINE AND THE SERVICE BRAKE WHEN I PRESSED THE PEDDLE THE BRAKE WAS FIRM AND STOPPED CORRECTLY. THE LINE MOVED AND I LIFTED MY FOOT OFF OF THE SERVICE BRAKE AND THE LINE STOPPED AND I APPLIED THE SERVICE BRAKE PEDDLE AND HAD TO PRESS THE PEDDLE FURTHER THAN I PRESSED THE PEDDLE THE FIRST TIME I STOPPED IN THE LINE. WHILE STOPPED IN THE LINE THE SECOND TIME THE RAV4 STARTED TO ROLL FORWARD AND I HAD TO PRESS THE SERVICE BRAKE EVEN FURTHER TO GET THE RAV4 STOP. THE LINE MOVED FORWARD AND I LIFTED MY FOOT OFF OF THE SERVICE BRAKE PEDDLE AND THE LINE STOPPED AND WHEN I PRESSED THE SERVICE BRAKE PEDDLE THE SERVICE BRAKE PEDDLE WENT TO THE FLOOR AND DID NOT SLOW UNTIL I STRUCK THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. AFTER THE ACCIDENT MY SERVICE BRAKE PEDDLE WAS VERY SPONGY AND SLOW TO RESPOND WHEN PRESSING THE SERVICE BRAKE PEDDLE. I TOOK MY RAV4 ON 8/14/2017 TO LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO HAVE MY SERVICE BRAKES CHECKED. WHEN I TOOK THE RAV4 IN I DID NOT HAVE ANY PAPER WORK TO SIGN. THE AFTERNOON THE SERVICE ADVISOR SAID MY RAV4 WAS READY. WHEN I WENT TO GET MY RAV4 THE SERVICE ADVISOR SAID NO CODES AND DID NOT GIVE ME ANY PAPER WORK AND I DID NOT SIGN ANY PAPER WORK. WHEN I GOT IN TO DRIVE THE RAV4 AWAY MY SERVICE BRAKE PEDDLE WAS FIRM NOT SPONGY AND RESPONDED QUICKLY AS VERY LITTLE MOVEMENT TO PRESS THE SERVICE BRAKE PEDDLE TO STOP THE RAV4. MY SERVICE ON THE TOYOTA WEB SITE SERVICE HAS NEVER REPORTED THE SERVICE EVEN TODAY. I CALLED THE TOYOTA AND TOLD THEM OF THIS SITUATION AND THE TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME TO BRING MY RAV4 BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP ON 8/24/2017 AND HE WOULD DOWNLOAD THE EVENT RECORDER AND DID ON 8/31/2017. NO ISSUES WAS REPORTED ON THE EVENT RECORDER. LETTER SHOWED NO REFERENCE THAT I HAD MY SERVICE BRAKES CHECKED ON 8/14/2017. SERVICE BRAKE IS SPONGY WHILE STOPPED NOW.
THE LANE DEPARTURE WARNING TONE CANNOT BE HEARD WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THERE IS NO WAY TO INCREASE THE VOLUME OF THE WARNING TONE AS THE CONSUMER. TOYOTA KNOWS THIS IS A PROBLEM (SEE PG 258 OF OWNER'S MANUAL) BUT REFUSES TO FIX. THIS IS A RISK TO PERSONAL SAFETY.
I PURCHASED A NEW 2017 TOYOTA RAV4 IN APRIL AND THIS INCIDENT HAPPENED IN AUGUST. WHILE DRIVING ON I15, I HEARD A LOUD EXPLOSION LIKE A TIRE BLOWOUT FOLLOWED BY SOUNDS OF BREAKING GLASS AND THEN WIND. MY SUNROOF HAD "EXPLODED". I PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND EXAMINED THE ROOF. THERE WAS NO INDICATION ANYTHING HAD STRUCK THE GLASS OR MY VEHICLE. THE INSIDE "VISOR" WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME AS WAS THE SUNROOF. I HAD NOT PASSED UNDER ANY OVERPASS OR OTHER OVERHEAD STRUCTURE I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE NEAREST DEALER AND THEY REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO TOYOTA. TOYOTA DENIED THE "WARRANTY" SINCE I COULD NOT "PROVE" THE GLASS HAD NOT BEEN STRUCK! THE DEALER REPLACED THE GLASS AT NO COST "ONE TIME WARRANTY". I AM CONCERNED THIS PROBLEM WILL REOCCUR SINCE THERE WAS NO CAUSE DETERMINED. PHOTOS ATTACHED
WE RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4 LE. THE FIRST TIME WE DROVE THIS VEHICLE AT NIGHT WE WERE SHOCKED THAT, WHEN USING LOW OR HIGH BEAMS, A DARK AREA APPEARED ACROSS THE ENTIRE WINDSHIELD OBSTRUCTING OUR VISION. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE AT NIGHT AND FEEL SAFE. WHEN YOU GO UP AND DOWN SMALL HILLS, THE DARKNESS MOVES UP AND DOWN AS WELL, AND IS VERY ANNOYING. WE CONTACTED THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THIS WAS THE WAY THE CAR WAS MADE. THEY WOULD DO NOTHING AND,IN FACT, TOLD US THAT THEY DIDN'T OWN THE CAR ANYMORE AND THAT WE SHOULD COMPLAIN TO TOYOTA; THAT IF ENOUGH PEOPLE COMPLAINED PERHAPS THEY WOULD HAVE A RECALL. FRANKLY, WE ARE AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE AT NIGHT.
AFTER SITTING AT A RED LIGHT ON A CITY STREET, I MADE A LEFT TURN. WHILE TURNING THE DRIVER'S DOOR POPPED OPEN (IT MADE A POPPING SOUND). IT WAS AJAR, NOT FULLY OPEN. I WAS ABLE TO CLOSE IT BACK WHILE CONTINUING TO DRIVE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE WINDSHIELD DARKENED AND MADE IT DIFFICULT TO SEE THE ROAD. THE CONTACT CHECKED THE OWNERS MANUAL AND FOUND THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EQUIPPED WITH SAFETY SENSE, WHICH DARKENED THE WINDSHIELD AT NIGHT TO PROTECT THE DRIVER FROM THE GLARE OF ONCOMING HEADLIGHTS. THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALER WERE CONTACTED (PIERCEY TOYOTA IN MILPITIS, CA) WHERE THE SALES MANAGER STATED THAT IT WAS NOT A KNOWN ISSUE. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO GET ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 350.
MY 2017 RAV4 IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AT NIGHT. THE CAR IS A LEASE AND WAS BRAND NEW WHEN I GOT IT. IT HAD LESS THAN 100 MILES, WHEN THIS STARTED HAPPENING. WHEN I HAVE MY HEADLIGHTS ON AT NIGHT THEY SEEM TO CAP OFF. THIS ALLOWS ME TO ONLY SEE THROUGH THE BOTTOM HALF OF MY WINDSHIELD. THE UPPER HALF GOES PITCH BLACK. IT IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE BECAUSE IT IMPAIRS MY VISION. THIS IS A REOCCURRING EVENT AND HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION. IT STARTED IN NOVEMBER OF 2016, AND I HAVE STOPPED DRIVING AT NIGHT BECAUSE OF HOW DANGEROUS IT IS.
BREAKS FAILED WHEN BACKING OUT OF PARKING SPACE AND FAILED IMMEDIATELY AGAIN WHEN TRYING TO PULL BACK INTO PARKING SPACE AFTER CAR HIT A CAR AND THEN HIT A CART CORRAL PUSHING THAT INTO ANOTHER CAR. AS A RESULT 3 CARS INCLUDING OURS WERE DAMAGED.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING AT UNKNOWN SPEEDS, THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVELED TO THE FLOOR WHEN DEPRESSED AND THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALER (PERFORMANCE TOYOTA LOCATED AT 5676 DIXIE HWY FAIRFIELD, OH 45014) WHERE IT DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRAKES MET TOYOTA SPECIFICATIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,400. UPDATED 11/02/17*LJ CONSUMER STATED THE DISTANCE THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVELS BEFORE THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED TO STOP THE CAR. DISTANCE IS INCREASING AS WE PUT MILES ON THE VEHICLE. THE BRAKE PEDAL WILL CONTINUE MOVING TOWARDS THE FLOOR AFTER STOPPING. AS IN A DRIVE THRU LINE. BRAKE PEDAL IS SOFT AND SPONGEY. MIMCS AIR IN BRAKE LINE. UPDATED 10/4/18*JB
AS I WAS APPROACHING THE MAIL BOX AREA IN MY APARTMENT COMPLEX AT APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, I PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE TO TURN INTO THE PARKING AREA IN FRONT OF THE FOUR METAL MAILBOXES AND PUT THE VEHICLE IN "PARK" WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LURCHED FORWARD AND JUMPED THE SIX-INCH, BRICK-PAVER CURB. I CRASHED INTO THE MAILBOX STRUCTURE, COMPLETELY UPLIFTING THE BASE THAT WAS BOLTED INTO THE CONCRETE AND HIT A WOOD TRASH CONTAINER HOLDER. I DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL HARDER BUT MY VEHICLE WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN OR STOP AND I ALSO COULD NOT CONTROL THE STEERING. I CONTINUED UP A HILL (AT 45-50 MPH) CONSISTING OF TALL GRASS, WILDFLOWERS, ROCKS, ETC., ACROSS A WALKING PATH OF WOODCHIPS AND MULCH, THEN DOWN THE HILL (STILL WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE) GRAZING THE BRANCHES AND LEAVES OF A SMALL TREE BEFORE COMING OFF THE SIX-INCH CURB AND BACK ONTO THE STREET, WHERE I HIT A LIGHT POST. I MANAGED TO LIFT THE PARKING BRAKE, SLAM ON THE BRAKE AGAIN AND THE VEHICLE ROLLED TO A STOP. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED.
PURCHASED NEW 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. WITH LESS THAN 1000 MILES ON THE CAR, I HAD A FLAT TRAVELING ON THE TOLL ROAD. SPEED LIMIT WAS 70MPH. I WAS ON THE TOLL ROAD FOR ABOUT 20 MILES. THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE HAD A LARGE SIDEWALL HOLE. I TOOK THE TIRE BACK TO THE TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THEY GAVE ONE QUICK LOOK AND I WAS TOLD THAT "NO WARRANTY WAS ON THE TIRE BY TOYOTA OR BRIDGESTONE." I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO REPLACE THE TIRE AT MY OWN EXPENSE. SEE ATTACHED PICTURES OF THE TIRE. I HAVE THE TIRE IN MY POSSESSION IF SOMEONE WISHES TO INSPECT IT FOR MANUFACTURER FAILURE.
WHILE PULLING INTO TO A PARKING SPACE,MY CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND JUMPED THE CURB CAUSING THE CAR TO HIT A TREE,CAUSING ALL AIR BAGS TO GO OFF. I WAS ASKED IF I HIT THE GAS INSTEAD OF THE BRAKE. THIS HAPPENED SO FAST THAT I SUPPOSE ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE BUT I REALLY DON'T THINK THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED. IS THERE A WAY THAT THEY CAN TELL WHAT HAPPENEED?
PURCHASED CAR FROM ST. CHARLES TOYOTA IL ON JULY4, 2017 VIN [XXX]. PURCHASED AND PICKED UP 2017 RAV4 LE FROM THEM ON JULY4TH (BETWEEN 11AM - 3PM). DROVE CAR FROM ST. CHARLES TO PEORIA IL. TODAY ON JULY6 RAV4 HAS 194 MILES. LATER CAME TO KNOW THAT THEIR SERVICE DEPT. WAS ACTUALLY CLOSED ON JULY 4TH. IDENTIFIED THREE PROBLEMS. WHILE DRIVING, ENGINE TEMPERATURE GAUGE SWAYED LITTLE RIGHT FROM MIDDLE POSITION. WAS CURIOUS AND CHECKED DIPSTICK TODAY ON JULY6 AND FOUND ENGINE OIL DIP STICK AT ABNORMAL LOW LEVEL. PICTURE ATTACHED. BRAKE PEDAL FELT SPONGY, FELT A DRAG IN BRAKING WHEN I APPLY BRAKES. FOUND WATER DRIPPING DOWN ON GROUND WHILE A/C WAS RUNNING IN PARKED POSITION. WATER DRIPPED ON GROUND LITTLE OFF FROM FRONT AXLE. RECORDED WATER DRIPPING. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
THE CAR IS A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4 XLE AWD. THE CAR WAS A REPLACEMENT VEHICLE FOR A 2015 TOYOTA RAV4 XLE AWD THAT HAD NON REPARABLE ELECTRICAL ISSUES AND WAS REPLACED BY TOYOTA BY AN ARBITRATION DECISION. THE FIRST DAY I DROVE THE CAR THE PASSIVE SAFETY SENSE SYSTEM ACTIVATED WHILE ON THE FREEWAY WHEN A CAR PASSED ME ON THE LEFT SIDE. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS BEHIND ME OR THEIR WOULD HAVE BEEN AN SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I TRADED THE CAR OFF 9 DAYS LATER AT A LOSS DUE TO COMPLETE LACK OF TRUST IN ANY TOYOTA PRODUCT. THE MANUFACTURER AND THE DEALER TREATED BE HORRIBLY ON THE PREVIOUS CAR THAT I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER TOYOTA AGAIN EVER.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE HEADLIGHTS MALFUNCTIONED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS DID NOT PROVIDE ENOUGH LIGHTING TO ILLUMINATE THE ROAD AHEAD. IN ADDITION, THE AUTO HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS WERE INTERMITTENT IN ILLUMINATING THE ROAD AHEAD. HOSELTON TOYOTA OF EAST ROCHESTER, NEW YORK WAS CONTACTED ON DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. ON THE FIRST OCCASION, THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED IN THAT MANNER AND INFORMED THE CONTACT TO GET USED TO THE WAY THE HEADLIGHTS OPERATED. THE DEALER'S REGIONAL SERVICE MANAGER AND TECHNICIAN WERE CONTACTED A SECOND TIME AND THE HEADLIGHTS WERE ADJUSTED SLIGHTLY. HOSELTON TOYOTA WARNED THAT ANY MORE ADJUSTMENTS WOULD BLIND ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 6,000.
THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS WITH STRANGE LETTERS AND IMAGERY.
THE SUNROOF EXPLODED WHILE I WAS DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED IN HIGH WINDS. NO OBJECT OR DEBRIS STRUCK THE VEHICLE. THE SUNROOF SIMPLY EXPLODED, LIKELY FROM AN UNDETECTABLE DEFECT IN THE GLASS AND AIR PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL, COUPLED WITH TORSIONAL OR AIR PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL FORCES CAUSED BY THE WIND. THE GLASS OF THE SUNROOF EXPLODED OUTWARD, WITH MOST OF THE GLASS BEING THROWN OUT AND BEHIND THE VEHICLE, AND SOME LANDING ON THE SLIDING SUNSHADE THAT COVERS THE SUNROOF, THAT WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME. THE GLASS CLEARLY SHATTERED OUTWARD, AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE IMAGES TAKEN IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARD, ATTACHED.
THE COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK. HAS NEVER WORKED SINCE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED ON APRIL 1, 2017.
THE DASH LIGHTING DURING CERTAIN DAYLIGHT CONDITIONS IS UNREADABLE, OR REQUIRES EXCESSIVE STARING TO DETERMINE QUANTITIES SUCH AS VEHICLE SPEED, FUEL AMOUNT, AND OTHER QUANTITIES ON THE MULTI FUNCTION INFORMATION DISPLAY (MFID). WHETHER IT IS UNREADABLE DEPENDS ON THE ANGLE OF THE SUN RELATIVE TO THE VEHICLE.THE INABILITY TO QUICKLY SEE WHAT IS INADEQUATELY DISPLAYED FORCES THE DRIVER TO EITHER GUESS THE SPEED OR TO STARE TOO LONG IN AN ATTEMPT TO ASCERTAIN THE SPEED. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. (I BELIEVE IT AFFECTS OTHER TOYOTA MODELS AS WELL AS MY RAV4 EV). *JS *JS
THE LIGHT FOR "SRS AIRBAG SYSTEM MALFUNCTION" WILL INTERMITTENTLY GO ON WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY OR COUNTRY ROADS. THE LIGHT WILL GO OFF ONLY ONCE THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF.
WAS DRIVING AND THE PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM PICKED UP A CAR IN THE LEFT HAND TURNING LANE WHEN I WAS GOING STRAIGHT AND BROUGHT MY CAR TO A DEAD STOP. HAPPENED A SECOND TIME- SAME TRIP, DIFFERENT LOCATION. NO PRE-BRAKE OR WARNING, JUST BROUGHT MY CAR TO A DEAD STOP WHEN PASSING A CAR IN A TURNING LANE TO MY LEFT AND THERE WERE NO VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME EITHER TIME- MY CAR WAS IN MOTION. 55MPH THE FIRST TIME, 45 MPH THE SECOND. BOTH TIMES GOING STRAIGHT. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAD A SAFETY INSPECTOR FROM TOYOTA COME OUT AND RUN TESTS- THEY GAVE ME MY CAR BACK AND SAID I WOULD HAVE THE RESULTS OF THE TEST WITHIN 30 DAYS. MY CONCERN IS WHY THIS HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE AND WHAT WAS DONE TO ENSURE IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN. I BOUGHT THE CAR ON 2/4/2017.
UNABLE TO HEAR LANE DEPARTURE ALERT MOST OF THE TIME. DEALER SAYS IT CANNOT BE ADJUSTED, CONFIRMED BY TOYOTA.COM.
HALOGEN PROJECTION HEADLIGHTS ARE UNSAFE. THEY DO NOT ILLUMINATE THE SIDES AND UPPER PART OF THE ROAD AND CAUSE A MOVING LINE IN THE CENTER OF YOUR FIELD OF VISION WHERE THERE IS DARKNESS ABOUT THE LINE MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE CLEARLY AT NIGHT USING THE LOW BEAMS. ON A DOWNHILL, THE AREA OF ILLUMINATION IS CUT OFF AND UNSAFE - HAVE TO USE HIGH BEAMS IN ORDER TO SEE THE ROAD. THIS LINE ALSO BOUNCES AROUND WITH THE BUMPS ON THE ROAD AND CAUSES ME TO GET NAUSEOUS WHEN DRIVING WITH LOW BEAMS AT NIGHT. THIS WAS NOT A ONE TIME INCIDENT: THIS HAPPENS WHEN DRIVING THE CAR AT NIGHT SINCE I HAVE OWNED THE CAR. *TR
I WAS DRIVING AND TAKING A TURN AND AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN RESULT IN A MINOR ACCIDENT. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON CRUISE CONTROL AT THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT OF 65 MPH, MY RAV 4 CAME TO AN ABRUPT DEAD STOP WITH NO WARNING. THERE WAS NOT A CAR IN FRONT OF MINE, BUT A CAR WAS STOPPED IN A MEDIAN TO MY LEFT FACING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF MY CAR. I COULD ONLY ASSUME THAT MY RAV 4 APPARENTLY SENSED THAT CAR WHEN IT CAME TO A SUDDEN DEAD STOP. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS HAPPENING TO MY CAR AND THOUGHT THE ENGINE HAD SHUT OFF. A PASSENGER WITH ME, WHO IS A WITNESS TO THIS EVENT, IS AN OWNER OF A RAV 4 SE WITHOUT THE SAFETY SENSE/PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM. WE WERE SHOOK UP BY THIS BECAUSE HAD THERE BEEN A CAR OR SEMI TRUCK TRAILER BEHIND US, WE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR EVEN KILLED. I REPORTED THIS INCIDENT TO THE DEALER, TOYOTA OF WARREN, WHERE WE PURCHASED THE NEW CAR, AND AFTER A DAY IN SERVICE, THEY SAID THE CAR WAS WORKING FINE WITH THE SENSORS ALIGNED CORRECTLY. I WAS TO LET THEM KNOW IF THIS SITUATION OCCURRED AGAIN, AND IT DID. IN ANOTHER INCIDENT, AGAIN WHILE USING THE CRUISE CONTROL AND WITH NO CAR IN FRONT OF MINE, A CAR IN THE PASSING LANE WENT BY ME AT APPROXIMATELY 80 MPH TO MY 65 MPH. MY CAR CAME TO A DEAD STOP. THANK GOD THERE WAS NOT A CAR BEHIND ME AT THE TIME, OR A SERIOUS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE OCCURRED. AFTER DOING RESEARCH ON THIS SAFETY PROBLEM THAT WE EXPERIENCED, WE FOUND A NUMBER OF REPORTS CONCERNING THIS VERY SITUATION HAPPENING WITH THEIR RAV 4'S COMING TO SUDDEN STOPS FOR NO REASON. THESE REPORTS OF THIS VERY PROBLEM WERE REPORTED TO TOYOTA WITH NO RESOLUTION. THESE OWNERS ALSO SOLD THEIR CARS AT A LOSS BECAUSE OF SAFETY ISSUES. ACCORDING TO THESE REPORTS, TOYOTA DOES KNOW THAT A PROBLEM EXISTS, BUT IS NOT BEING ADDRESSED. *TR
LANE DEVIATION WARNING IS NOT AUDIBLE WHEN VEERING EITHER RIGHT OR LEFT AT SPEEDS OVER 32 MILES PER HOUR AS STATED IN THE OWNERS MANUAL. OUR 2015 TOYOTA RAV 4 LANE DEVIATION WARNING WAS LOUD AND CLEAR.
The blue line shows 300 total NHTSA complaints filed over 11 years, with the worst year being 2024 (47 complaints, including 4 crash reports).
The amber reliability line is declining — recent years score around 14/100, lower than earlier in the vehicle's life. This pattern indicates issues are accumulating over time rather than being resolved, which is a concern for used buyers.
The recalls (red dashed lines) followed the first complaints by 1 year — a typical response window; neither unusually fast nor a pattern of denial.
Red dots on the amber line flag 10 years (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2026) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
2GR-FKS and related 3.5L V6 engines exhibit excessive oil consumption due to piston ring design. Toyota issued Special Service Campaign SSC 80G extending warranty coverage for oil consumption diagnosis and piston ring replacement where consumption exceeds 1 quart per 1,200 miles.
