VERIFYCriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Typical interval: 120,000 mi / 10 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify timing chain tensioner service history with the seller
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
VERIFYCriticalWater Pump
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 8 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify water pump service history with the seller
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
VERIFYHighTransmission Fluid / Service
Typical interval: 60,000 mi / 5 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify transmission fluid / service service history with the seller
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
VERIFYHighDifferential / Transfer Case Fluid
Typical interval: 50,000 mi / 4 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify differential / transfer case fluid service history with the seller
On 4WD/AWD vehicles, neglected differential or transfer case fluid causes metal-on-metal wear. Replacement costs $1,500–$4,000.
VERIFYHighCoolant Flush
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 5 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify coolant flush service history with the seller
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
VERIFYModerateSpark Plugs (iridium/platinum)
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 8 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify spark plugs (iridium/platinum) service history with the seller
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
VERIFYModerateFuel Injectors
Typical interval: 120,000 mi / 10 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify fuel injectors service history with the seller
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.

ODI #11180849SERVICE BRAKES

THE BRAKE LINES WERE CORRODED AND LEAKING IN AT LEAST TWO LOCATIONS. THE DEALER MASSEY CADILLAC OF SOUTH ORLANDO HAD TO REPLACE FROM THE REAR AXLE TO THE MASTER CYLINDER. THIS HAPPENED WHILE WE WERE DRIVING ON INTERNATIONAL DRIVE ON OUR WAY HOME TO MC.

ODI #11153726SERVICE BRAKES

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CADILLAC ESCALADE. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVELED TO THE FLOORBOARD WHEN IT WAS DEPRESSED. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS PUMPED EXTENSIVELY TO COAST THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THAT THE BRAKE LINES WERE FRACTURED, WHICH CAUSED BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK. THE DEALER (JOSEPH CHEVROLET, 8733 COLERAIN AVE, CINCINNATI, OH 45251, (513) 904-4110) WAS CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 86,000.

ODI #11120191FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

WHEN PASSING A VEHICLE, I PRESSED THE THROTTLE PEDAL COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR. AFTER PASSING THE VEHICLE, I REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE PEDAL AND THE PEDAL REMAINED STUCK FULLY DOWN WITH THE ENGINE AT FULL THROTTLE. I KICKED AT THE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES AND THE PEDAL POPPED UP. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES AND I TRY NOW TO NOT PRESS THE PEDAL COMPLETELY DOWN, BUT I ALWAYS WONDER IF AND WHEN IT WILL STICK AGAIN.

ODI #11006318FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

I WAS DRIVING THE CAR DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND THE LOW OIL PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND WENT OFF. I DROVE IT FOR 5 MORE MINUTES AND THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUT OFF ON ME AS I WAS DRIVING. THE CAR HAS 109,000 MILES AND WAS MAINTAINED REGULARLY. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC AND HE TOLD ME EITHER THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED OR REBUILT COSTING ME ANYWHERE BETWEEN $5000 AND $7000. NEEDLESS TO SAY I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED BY THIS AND WAS TERRIFIED THAT THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUT OFF ON ME ON THE HIGHWAY.

ODI #10156926EXTERIOR LIGHTING

NEWER MODELS OF VEHICLES SUCH AS THE CADILLAC ESCALADE, CADILLAC STS, BMW, NISSAN AND OTHER VEHICLES INCORPORATE LED (LIGHT EMITTING DIODE) TAIL AND BRAKE LIGHTS. IN SOME MODELS, THESE LED LAMPS ARE STROBED OR PULSED AT A RATE TO EFFECT A CHANGE IN BRIGHTNESS BETWEEN TAILLIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT INDICATIONS. THE STROBING EFFECT IS VERY DISTRACTING WHEN FOLLOWING THE VEHICLE ON BUMPY ROADS OR WHEN VISUALLY SCANNING THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING. THE STROBING EFFECT MAY CAUSE ACCIDENTS BY DRIVERS FOLLOWING SUCH EQUIPPED VEHICLES AND FIXATING ON THE STROBING TAIL LIGHTS. I RECOMMEND THE ESTABLISHMENTS OF FEDERAL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS INCREASING THE STROBING RATE OF SUCH TAIL LIGHTS SUCH THAT THE VISUAL DISTRACTION CAUSED BY THE SLOW STROBE LIGHT EFFECT IS MINIMIZED. IN PARTICULAR, I FIND SUCH LIGHTS VERY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE BEHIND. MY EYES ARE MORE SENSITIVE TO THE STROBING EFFECT THAN OTHERS. I SUSPECT I AM NOT ALONE IN THIS SENSITIVITY. *NM

The blue line shows 24 total NHTSA complaints filed over 11 years, with the worst year being 2016 (5 complaints).

The amber reliability line averaged 99/100 across the vehicle's life — relatively stable, with the lowest point of 90/100 in 2015.

Notably, despite 24 complaints on file, no recall has been issued — either the defect pattern has not met NHTSA's threshold for a formal campaign, or a recall may be forthcoming.

Red dots on the amber line flag 2 years (2007, 2015) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
