Deferred Failure Risk
Components and defects approaching or past their known service milestones
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.
One failed component has created stress on connected systems. Repair costs compound quickly — a $500 fix can become $3,000+ if cascade damage is ignored.

Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2018 Ford Transit. It was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was a dealer sale. At the time of the purchase the mileage was 64,000 and at the time when the fraud was discovered the mileage was 364,00.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Transit. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was a misfire coming from the engine with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to several independent mechanics, where it was diagnosed with coolant intrusion into the engine, causing engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
1- THE TURBO HAS FAILED TWICE 2- CURRENTLY The torque converter has failed. The mechanic has claimed this is a common problem and recommends a complete transmission replacement. This is available for inspection right now. The problem was suspected by Dealer but independent center diagnosed. The vehicle made a terrible hum as if it was going to explode. We had it cleaned and it made it stop for 10 miles, then it resumed.
Rear-view camera displayed on rear-view mirror quit working, creating a blind spot behind the vehicle. No accident has yet occurred, but the danger is there. The vehicle is available for inspection. Ford has issued a recall for this problem for this year, make, and model vehicle, but Ford says that the recall is not extended to vehicles like mine that were manufactured in a plant not covered by the initial recall #25V270, which has recently been extended. My vehicle has not been inspected by any third party, nor has the problem been confirmed by any local dealer, althought I have spoken to my local dealer, Sarasota Ford, twice about this issue. No warning lamps or messages have been displayed in my vehicle. The camera just goes to a blue screen, especially when the weather is warm or in the heat of the day.
In hot or humid conditions, the 8 inch center display flashes on and off intermittently. This failure makes the backup camera unusable, which is a safety problem. It also makes controlling the navigation or radio very difficult. The dealer has looked at this vehicle problem a few times in the last five years and has been unable to duplicate the problem. I cannot force this to occur at the dealership service department. Because the weather condition needed to duplicate this problem rarely occur near my home getting service for this is very difficult. Once the heat or humidity has subsided via using the air conditioning, the problem goes away after an hour or so.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Transit. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40-60 MPH, the vehicle started vibrating abnormally and was almost uncontrollable. The contact held the steering wheel tightly. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the driveshaft coupling had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not included in a related recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 480,000.
09/18/25 As per conversation with Ford Customer Service; while the vehicle falls within the Mfg Date (Oct 19 2017) and Mfg Place (Kansas) listed on recall notice 25S89 AKA 25V572000, 25V270, the issue description -"rear view camera distorted or blank" is still not eligible because it falls outside of Fords approved/listed VIN numbers. Ford Customer Support recommended having the issue repaired at local dealer and pay out-of-pocket and 'hope' that Ford acknowledges this VIN as part of a 'possible' future recall. How can I/we/you be assured that Ford will review this particular issue and consider it for recall? Are there other vehicles like mine that have this ongoing issue that Ford has deliberately excluded?
Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2018 Ford Transit. The contact stated that upon taking the vehicle to the Ford dealer for service, the contact was informed that the vehicle was a Lemon vehicle, and that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was a dealer sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 33,135; however, upon retrieving the Carfax history report of the vehicle, the Ford dealer informed the contact that the vehicle mileage was 240,000.
My 2018 Ford Transit 250 experienced a failure of the Input/Turbine Speed Sensor in the 6R80 transmission’s mechatronic lead frame at approximately 60,000 miles. The failure was confirmed by an authorized Ford service department, which retrieved DTC codes P0715-00 and P0717-00. These codes indicate that the turbine speed sensor signal is lost, forcing the transmission into limp mode, causing loss of power and erratic shifting. This is a serious safety concern, it can occur suddenly while driving and results in loss of proper gear control. Relation to Recall 19S07 Ford has already acknowledged this same defect in other vehicles using the 6R80 transmission. In Safety Recall 19S07, Ford recalled certain 2011–2013 F-150, Expedition, and Navigator models due to failure of the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor in the 6R80 lead frame. The failure mode, symptoms, and remedy (lead frame replacement and PCM update) are identical. In my case, the failure is of the Input/Turbine Speed Sensor rather than the OSS sensor, but both are housed in the same lead frame assembly and both result in sudden sensor failure, limp mode, and unsafe driving conditions. Why Action Is Needed Despite the identical defect, Ford has refused coverage because my VIN is not included in Recall 19S07 and my vehicle is just outside the 5 year / 60,000 mile powertrain warranty. This exclusion leaves Transit owners unprotected even though we are experiencing the same premature failure Ford already acknowledged. Given the safety implications, I am requesting NHTSA to investigate whether Recall 19S07 should be expanded to include Ford Transit vehicles equipped with the 6R80 transmission. Summary Vehicle: 2018 Ford Transit 250, 60,000 miles DTCs: P0715-00, P0717-00 (Input/Turbine Speed Sensor failure) Component: 6R80 mechatronic lead frame (same part as in Recall 19S07) Symptoms: Limp mode, loss of shifting, unsafe drivability Ford refuses coverage despite identical failure acknowledged in other model
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Transit. The contact stated that while slowly driving into a parking space, the vehicle suddenly experienced unintended acceleration and crashed into another parked vehicle. During the incident, the brake pedal was pressed, but the vehicle did not stop. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. No injuries were reported and a police report was taken at the scene. Also, the vehicle later experienced the same failure. While attempting to park the vehicle again experienced unintended acceleration and drove forward, crashing into a second vehicle. During the crash, the two front occupants of the second vehicle had sustained undisclosed injuries that later required medical treatment. No further information was available. A police report was taken at the scene. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, who was unable to determine the cause of the second failure. The contact indicated that the failure had recently reoccurred for the third time. The cause of the failures was not determined. The manufacturer was not contacted regarding the failures. The failure mileage was unknown.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Transit. The contact stated while driving at 55 MPH, the vehicle suddenly started losing power, after driving over 200 yards, the vehicle became inoperable. The check engine and service engine warning lights were illuminated. The contact merged to the side of the road as a ramp was coming up and called AAA. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and was diagnosed with a timing chain and engine failure. The contact was informed by the dealer of an extended warranty; however, the warranty had expired two days prior to the failure. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The engine was replaced with a used engine, new timing chain, new gaskets, engine oil, water pump, rear sealant, coolant, and spark plugs. The vehicle was replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 156,206.
I finance this car 10/ 25/24. I found some papers inside the car that says the car was 300.0 miles. But i purchased to the dealer with 77.0miles, how can I know is was a fraud?
I was driving on a rural highway 55 mph when I heard a pop! I lost control and veered into oncoming traffic! I slowed down by tapping brakes and ended up back on the right side in the shoulder/ditch. The shoulder had new gravel so it slowed me down and grabbed a hold of what was left. Found the wheel out in the ditch a good ways from the car and also three lug nuts with bolts still attached and broken at the base in the stretch from the turn off to where the car stopped. Also found my brake pad near a lug nut in the median! Bolts completely broken at the base with lug nuts still attached. Wheel completely fine just not on car. Inside rim gouged out from riding on it after the bolts broke. Found a recall on Ford Transit for the 2019 version of this vehicle for the exact same problem. But since this is a 2018 Ford will not honor it. Cause appears to be a weakness in the alloy used which warps over time and then without warning causing the bolts to brake at the base and separate wheel from vehicle.
Exhaust manifold warped/broken stud causing exhaust leak.
Randomly down shifts on its own while driving
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Transit. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, an abnormal squeaking sound would be emitted from the vehicle without warning. The contact stated that the sound went away upon the depression of the brake pedal. Since owning the vehicle, the contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer for an oil change, each time, the contact was informed that both the brake pads and rotors needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the clips needed to keep the brake pads in place fractured approximately 20-50 miles after being replaced. The contact stated that the brake pads and rotors had been replaced several times due to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and acknowledged the failure; however, no assistance was provided. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
With this vehicle when driving on highway or interstate once you go past about 40 miles the transmission begins to overheat and when it reaches a temperature of approximately 245° it will kick down into limp mode causing the vehicle to suddenly slow down in front of other traffic. You have to get over to the side of the road and let the transmission cool down before you can continue at a safe pace. This vehicle has been taken multiple times the transmission has been replaced twice. They have replaced the transmission cooler, they have an auxiliary cooler, and the problems still persist. This is very dangerous to be operating when it kicks down tent mode and gears down suddenly. It has been in Fords service shop for over seven months now and we just got it back with the new auxiliary cooler on it and it is still having the same problem.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Transit. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle made an abnormal whistling sound. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where an unknown sensor was replaced, and the check engine warning light was no longer illuminated. Additionally, the contact stated while driving 60 MPH with her husband and 5 children in the vehicle, they all started having severe headaches, were dizzy and her daughter 's ears were ringing. The contact stated that she pulled to the side of the road for a moment. Then she rolled down the windows and drove to the residence. The contact stated that her 5 years old and 8 years old vomited upon arriving at the residence. The contact and her family did not seek medical assistance. The contact stated that they were able to recover after 24 hours. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the exhaust manifold bolts were fractured, causing carbon monoxide to leak inside the cabin of the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they aware of the failure and that an improved part had been made. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
The contact's company owns a 2018 Ford Transit. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the tow company mechanic, where it was diagnosed that coolant intrusion in the engine had caused the engine to seize. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact to tow the vehicle to the dealer for diagnostic testing. Additionally, the manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
The vehicle goes into "limp" mode at random and without warning. The driver loses the ability to accelerate even though the engine remains on. This poses a serious safety risk to the driver, passenger and all other drivers on the highway when the driver has lost mechanical control and has to coast to the side of the road out of traffic. This began happening only after 37,000 miles. The throttle body was replaced, however, this is a reoccurring issue on other vehicles of the same type in my fleet posing a major safety threat to my employees and bystanders.
Hi, I bought this Ford 150 transit brand new back in 2018. About 6 months ago my rear camera is not working properly, sometimes the screen is dark or the view is real fuzzy hard to see cars when backing up. I called Ford corporation to see if this has a recall , but no such luck. They did file a complaint form of the issue. Will let me know when there is a recall. I'm worried that someday i'm going to back up and hit a car or a person, Also i do use this van for work to transport people. Its hard to see with a large full size transit van. I think this should be a recall for these transit vans its decently a safety problem. Please let me know. Thanks [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
We was going to a week long camp. The individual in the front passenger seat said to the driver that he was not feeling good and told the driver that he was going to take a nap. Before he laid back he looked in the back of the van to check on the kids. As he looked back one kid appeared to be having a seizure. So the driver immediately pulled over. I was following in another van. So I pulled over and went up to the van to see what the issue was and opened the side door. The kids was all hanging there heads sick and vomiting. We hurried and called 911 for help. When the medics got there they informed us of carbon monoxide poisoning. So we took the van to the next town and dropped the van off at the dealership and had to rent another van to go on with our trip. So on our way back home we picked the van back up from the dealership. It was after hours so we called ahead and paid for the repair. They replaced the rear door seal. How ever before we picked it up we purchased a co detector to put in the van. We went a very short distance and the alarm went off. so we had to travel the rest of the way home with the windows down approximately 10 hours. We now have the van at another dealership back closer to home. the dealership is now telling us there is a plug missing under the van and that we need to buy a tail pipe extension that ford has designed to get the exhaust fumes out from under the van. they are also telling us that the vehicle will not pass a state safety inspection with it dumping the exhaust fumes under the van and this will be repaired at our expense. Now my question is if there was not a design flaw why did Ford design a tail pipe extension? Also as i drive down the road I notice all the newer van have an extended tail pipe. Also would the tail pie not be part of the emissions and if it is why would this not be covered by the 8 year 80000 mile emissions warranty? this is a very serious situation. As we talked to a phyishion she said we was minutes from death
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Transit equipped with Michelin Tires, Tire Line: Agilis CrossClimate C-Metric, Tire Size: 235/65R/16C, and DOT Number: 1FK4107CX. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23T002000 (Tires); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
The cam phasers started giving us issues at 47,000 miles. At the time, Ford told us this was a normal thing with these vehicles and there was no concern. Now that I am at 103,000 miles, the phasers have gotten a lot worse where the vehicle stalls and misfires, along with a loud rattle at startup. Ford will not replace them under warranty now that I am out of warranty, even though I brought the vehicle in while it was in warranty and was told it was normal. This is an extremely common issue with the 3.5L Ecoboost engine, and something needs to be done about it. Ford already has a warranty extension program for the F150. They need to extend that to the other vehicles with the same engine that have the exact same defect.
The right side passenger door opens when driving. The door will not stay latched even when locked. I close the door, pull on it to ensure it is latched, but when I start driving, the door slides open. This is my family vehicle used to transport our children, and is a very dangerous situation.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Transit. The contact stated while driving into the driveway, the contact heard an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not under recall and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure was mileage 87,000.
On March 7, 2023, at approximately 1:45 PM, Bus 437 had caught fire in the engine compartment of the vehicle while sitting in the parking lot. The bus had just came off of a route minutes before & the driver had reported the dash tell tale (warning) lights had come on. The Operator switched the engine off and then noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment area prior to the thermal event. The fire caused significant damage & the vehicle is a total loss; the engine compartment, bus body, interior as well as exterior and top cap of the bus were affected. An independent firm was hire to conduct the fire investigation ( EFI Global, Inc.) & determined the source of the fire to be a power supply from the vehicles jump box; however our history with alternator failures & consumption of these components combined with my mechanical experience leads me to believe that the root cause of this has been overlooked and the alternator failures need to be further investigated for public safety reasons. I have engage the dealer principal (Creative Bus Sales, Inc.) who we purchased the vehicle from whom is working with Ford on this matter. The Alternator is the component that I want investigated & the one in question has not been removed from the vehicle however we did break down 3 alternators from our inventory of failed cores & the findings support my theory as the alternator (diodes) being the culprit of the failures. The cause of the fire is believed to be a situation created when the single alternator overheated causing the diode bridge to fail & alternator to ignite. We have experienced alternator failures on this group of buses since the vehicles inception into the fleet going back to 2018. 38 of these model buses were purchased & placed into service in 2018 & we have replaced 283 alternators since they were placed into service (very high consumption/failure rates).
This is an update on the same problem I reported a year ago...January 2022, it started to shudder during acceleration but it was intermittent. February 2022, it started to occur more. March 2022, it started to do it while cruising at a higher speed on the freeway. Then going up a steep hill one day, it started to shudder and could not exceed more than 30 mph up a very steep hill. The transmission is progressively getting worse...It seems to stay in 1st gear and then jump to 6th gear...and now I smell some burning...There is a recall on the Ford Focus transmission for the same reason...Although it may be a different transmission, the problem is a carbon copy of my Ford transmission...This should be a RECALL ISSUE because it is happening a lot in other documented cases. Please inform us of the steps to get this issue INVESTIGATED and RECALLED.
I ordered 195/75R-16C Cooper Hercules Terra Trac tires for two different vendors on Ebay. Four from one vendor , two from another. The two tires I got from one vendor, had a manufacturer date code of 2622, which is good. The other four tires had NO date of manufacture code anywhere on them!!! Isn't this against the law?
While I am driving, the battery warning light come up first, then the break system warning light come up, then transmission warning coming up. if I keep vehicle moving after while will get back normal. only when I stop the vehicle then vehicle will shut off can not start. Only when I jump start and will running for while.
Multiple occurrences after traveling on the highway and then slowing down or when coming to a stop, the vehicle autonomously makes one or more very hard downshifts. It is enough to unexpectedly propel the occupants forward in their seats/seatbelts. ...while driving approximately 35-40 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and went into limp mode. The shuddering and vibrations along with the slipping of gears and the inability to go uphill before it goes into limp mode...The vehicle would not accelerate above 20 MPH. There's a recall on the Ford Focus and the problem is a carbon copy. Reading about other Transit vans having the same problem, I felt that I should make you aware of the issue.
2018 FORD TRANSIT. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO DEFECTIVE SLIDING DOOR. THE CONSUMER STATED THE SLIDING DOOR WOULD BECOME STUCK. THE DEALER ATTEMPTED TO REPAIR THE SLIDING DOOR ON 5 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER WARRANTY
This is the second time this has occurred. The van lost sudden power causing me to almost be hit from behind a second time now. This is only 3 months after the initial occurrence. The Ford manufacturer is aware.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Transit. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35-40 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and went into limp mode. The vehicle would not accelerate above 20 MPH. The failure almost caused a collision. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 44,000.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Transit. The contact stated that the rearview camera would inadvertently turn blue while reversing. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who informed the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired under an unknown recall because the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred several times while reversing. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who informed the contact that they could not duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with NHTSA. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 26,000.
After two or three hours driving in the high way show in the dashboard panel "TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED" and lose power it means "traction" driving from 60 MPH goes under 40 MPH
MULTIPLE OCCURRENCES AFTER TRAVELING AT FULL SPEED ON US HWY 76AND THEN SLOWING DOWN OR WHEN COMING TO A STOP, THE VEHICLE AUTONOMOUSLY MAKES ONE OR MORE VERY HARD DOWNSHIFTS. IT IS ENOUGH TO UNEXPECTEDLY PROPEL THE OCCUPANTS FORWARD IN THEIR SEATS/SEATBELTS. AFTER HEARING ABOUT THE POSSIBLE REOPENING OF THE F150 RECALL AND READING ABOUT OTHER TRANSIT VANS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, I FELT THAT I SHOULD MAKE YOU AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THANKS, [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).”
THIS VEHICLES ARE BUILT WITH TWO WENT OPENING ON TOP OF THE ENGINE HOOD. THIS WENT OPENINGS ARE FOR HEAT SYSTEM TO SUCK THE AIR IN FOR HEATING OR DEFROSTING. PROBLEM WITH THIS OPENINGS THEY ARE GETTING BLOCKED WITH SNOW OR ICE IN SNOWY WEATHER AND AREN'T ALLOWING ENOUGH AIR TO ENTER IN TO A VEHICLE TO HEAT IT. YOU CAN SOLVE THIS TURNING THE SWITCH TO INTERIOR CIRCULATION BUT AT THAT TIME ON THIS OPTION DEFROST FUTURE GOING OUT AND THERE IS NO WAY TO DEFROST WINDOWS BASICALLY IF THE WENT OUTSIDE ON TOP OF THE HOOD FROZEN OR BLOCKED WITH SNOW. THIS CREATES DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. I REALIZE THIS IN THE LAST BIG SNOW STORM ON NORTHEAST WHERE WE GOT LOT OF SNOW. COMPANY LIKE FORD MOTOR SHOULD NOT MISSED SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
DIESEL ENGINE FAILS CATASTROPHICALLY ON HIGHWAY IN MOTION--FIRST A BLOWN PISTON AT 78K MILES, TURBO FAILED WITHIN 5K MILES OF ENGINE. PRIOR TO THESE FAILURES, BOTH THIS TRUCK AND IT'S TWIN(BOUGHT IDENTICALLY TOGETHER) DEVELOPED LEAKS IN THE RADIATORS...SAME LOCATION. THE SISTER TRUCK IS NOW AT A FORD DEALER WITH A BLOWN ENGINE

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 FORD TRANSIT VAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SHOULDER HARNESS WAS IMPROPERLY MOUNTED TO THE SEAT AN NOT TO THE A-PILLAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT DESIGN FAILED TO ALLOW THE PASSENGER TO EXIT THE VEHICLE QUICKLY IN THE LIKELIHOOD THERE WAS AN EMERGENCY. GAUDIN FORD (6625 ROY HORN WAY, LAS VEGAS, NV 89118, (888) 301-4776) CONTACTED THE DESIGNER OF THE CONVERSION VAN AND STATED THE CONTACT'S CONCERN. THE DESIGNER AND THE MANUFACTURER REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE. HE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 9,500.
REGARDING 2018 FORD TRANSIT XLT 15 PASSENGER WITH ECOBOOST ENGINE. THE FACTORY INSTALLED AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM DOES NOT HAVE THE CAPACITY TO COOL DOWN THE VAN'S CABIN, IN SOUTHERN STATES LIKE SOUTH FLORIDA, WHERE THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE REACHES 85+ DEGREES FAHRENHEIT DURING A SUNNY DAY THROUGH MOST OF THE YEAR, THE VEHICLE'S A/C SYSTEM SIMPLY FAILS TO PROPERLY COOL DOWN THE CABIN. SEVERAL CASES HAVE BEEN OPENED WITH FORD MOTOR COMPANY, AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE FORD DEALERSHIPS FAIL TO EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM. THEY RUN THEIR DIAGNOSTICS TOOLS, AND ALL THE COMPONENTS ON THE SYSTEM ARE WORKING AS INTENDED, EXCEPT THAT IT DOES NOT PROVIDES SUFFICIENT COLD AIR TO MAKE THE PASSENGERS SAFELY AND COMFORTABLY RIDE THE VAN. UN FORTUNATELY, THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT THE OWNERS DON'T DISCOVER UNTIL AFTER THEY HAVE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND DRIVEN IT FOR A WHILE. FORD IS NOT PROVIDING ANY SOLUTION WHATSOEVER TO THE PROBLEM. AND THIS ISSUE MAY BE AFFECTING ALL OWNERS OF THE SAME VEHICLE WITH SIMILAR TRIMS AND SPECS. ADDITIONAL TESTING AND CERTIFICATION OF THE ISSUE BY INDEPENDENT CERTIFIED VEHICLE A/C TECHNICIANS AND ENGINEERS ARE BEING GATHERED. FURTHER LEGAL ACTION MAY FOLLOW.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 FORD TRANSIT. WHEN IT RAINED, WATER LEAKED INSIDE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND DAMAGED THE COMPONENTS. WHEN THE CONTACT STARTED THE VEHICLE, HE HEARD AN ABNORMAL KNOCKING NOISE. THE CONTACT ALSO NOTICED THAT THE SEPARATOR FROM THE TOP OF THE HOOD TO THE WINDSHIELD HAD SEPARATED, ALLOWING WATER TO FLOW INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE CONTACT EVEN NOTICED THAT THE ROOF INSIDE THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WAS WET AND THERE WAS WATER ON THE FLOOR. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 32,000.
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON AND ENDED UP BEING MALFUNCTIONING CATYLYTIC CONVERTER. FORD TRANSIT ECOBOOST 3.5 350XLT 21000 MILES APPROX. NOT SURE WHY OR HOW BUT FORD DEALERSHIP REPLACING PARTS.
1. RAIN SENSING WIPERS WORK INTERMITTENTLY BARELY WHEN DRIVING. TOLD BY SALES MANAGER THAT "THEY WORK BUT IT ISN'T A PERFECT SYSTEM" 2. A.M. LIMITED RECEPTION IN WIDE OPEN AREAS IN MULTIPLE LARGE POPULATION AREAS. SITTING OR DRIVING BOTH. TRIED TO USE FOR 530 A.M. ROAD INFORMATION & WOULDN'T WORK. 3. BODY ROOF SEAL CAME LOOSE FROM ROOF DRIVING HOME IN COLD WEATHER. 4. TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR FAULT GOES OFF AND ON WHILE DRIVING. 5. SEAT BELT HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT TAB ON FRONT PASSENGER SIDE FELL OFF. NOT COVERED BY FORD BECAUSE IT IS PLASTIC. 6. CUSTOMER CONNECTION POWER POINT ON DRIVERS SEAT PEDESTAL MISSING A MOUNTING NUT FROM FACTORY. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE POWER POINT IS NOT FACTORY BECAUSE WE CONNECTED INTO THE PORT AS IT WAS DESIGNED FOR. STUD THREADS ARE STILL UNMARKED (NEW). THIS ALLOWS THE LOWER SECTION OF CCP TO BE SLIGHTLY LOOSE. 7. AC VENTS ON MAX BLOWING OUT 65-70 DEGREE AIR AT IDLE IN 80 DEGREE OUTSIDE AMBIENT TEMP. (KNOWN ISSUE) 8. OVERHEAD A/C LOUVERED VENTS ARE BREAKING INTERNALLY WHEN ADJUSTED. ONE ENTIRE VENT FELL OUT WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD ONTO MY CHILD'S HEAD WHO COULDN'T TOUCH IT. NOT COVERED BECAUSE THEY BROKE BUT THEY AREN'T A MECHANICAL FAILURE. DAUGHTER HAD SCRATCH ON HER FOREHEAD WHERE IT HIT HER. 10. OPENED UP HEADLAMP LENS TO UPGRADE THE LIGHTS AND THE LOW BEAM PIG TAIL ON BOTH LIGHTS ARE ALREADY DETERIORATING FROM THE LENS HEAT. LIGHTLY TOUCHED EACH OF THE LOCKING CLIPS AND WITHOUT LIFTING EITHER ONE AND THEY FELL OFF. HIGH BEAM WHICH ARE USED MUCH LESS HAVE PERFECT LOCKING TABS STILL. REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN CONTINUITY TO THESE LIGHTS. 11. LAST WEEK A PLUG IN THE DRIVERS DOOR THRESHOLD OVER FRAME BOLT TRIPPED ME WHEN IT CAME UP AS I WAS STEPPING OUT. SECOND TO FALL OUT. ALL THIS TOLD TO US UNDER THE 36K BUMPER TO BUMPER YET DEALER IS WILLING TO CHARGE ME FOR THE DEFECTIVE PARTS.
REAR BRAKES AND TIRES FOR TWO OF OUR 2018 FORD TRANSIT VEHICLES ARE NEEDING TO BE REPLACED WITH LESS THAN 10,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLES. WE ALSO SEEN THIS OCCUR WITH ONE OF OUR 2016 FORD TRANSIT -- REAR BRAKES HAVE BEEN REPLACED TWICE WITHIN 32,000
AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS OF 75 MPH WITH A 30 DEGREE CROSSWIND AND GUSTS EXCEEDING 40 MPH, THE FRONT DOOR ON THE LEE SIDE FLEXES AND THE TOP OF THE DOOR OPENS. THIS DEFORMATION OF THE DOOR INDICATES A POTENTIAL FOR THE WARPING OF DOORS OVER TIME OR IN THE WORSE CASE, THE DOOR COMPLETELY OPENING TO THE DETRIMENT OF DRIVER AND PASSENGERS. TRAVELING NORTH WITH GUSTY WINDS FROM THE SOUTHWEST THE PASSENGER FRONT DOOR FLEXED OPEN AND TRAVELING SOUTH WITH A GUSTY SOUTHWEST WINDS THE DRIVER DOOR FLEXED OPEN. (OCCURRED FEBRUARY 2019 ON A SUNDAY)
I OWN THIS CAR 3 MONTHS, AND 2 WEEKS AGO MY WILL HAB IN RATE SAIDE WAS BROKE AND AFTER 2 WEEKS MY LEFT SIDE BROKE, SO DENGER IF IS WILL GO OUT IN ROAD . PROBLEM IS MY TOO FRIEND HAVE SAME TROUBLE.
BATTERY KEPT DRAINING-FOUND OUT 2 BATTERIES UNDER THE DRIVER'S SEAT AND THE FUEL IS PUT IN AT THE DRIVER'S SEAT DOOR. THE DOOR MUST STAY OPENED DURING FUELING. ALSO, THE BATTERY DRAINING AND NUMEROUS REPLACEMENTS FOUND DUE TO INCORRECT WIRING AGAIN. THIS IS A CONVERSION VAN BY EXPLORER, AND WE'VE ALREADY HAD ANTIFREEZE LEAKAGE WHICH IS STILL A PROBLEM WITH THE SMELL. THE VEHICLE IS STILL AT REPAIR SHOP IN MILLERSVILLE FOR ANOTHER MONTH. MVA INVESTIGATOR KEVIN CHUBB DIRECTED US TO INVESTIGATE THIS FUEL SYSTEM AND BATTERY SYSTEM PLACEMENT FOR INSPECTION. HE FELT AS WE DID THAT IT IS A HEALTH AND SAFETY HAZARD.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 FORD TRANSIT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WIRING WAS WORN AND BEING EATEN BY RATS. AS A RESULT, THE ENGINE HAD TROUBLE STARTING, BUT THE VEHICLE COULD STILL BE DRIVEN. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FAIRLANE FORD (14585 MICHIGAN AVE, DEARBORN, MI 48126, (313) 846-5000) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE WIRING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE WIRES WERE MADE OUT OF SOY AND ORGANIC BIO PLASTIC. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 67,700.
SEVERAL SPOTS ARE OCCURRING AT JOINTS OF DOOR OPENINGS AND ALSO ON THE ROOF WHERE THE PAINT IS NOT ADHERING PROPERLY OR IS ACTUALLY BEING RUBBED OFF WHEN THE DOORS ARE CLOSED AND THE VEHICLE IS AN OPERATION. THE PAINT JOB ON THE CEILING WELDS IS NOT SMOOTH. IT APPEARS THAT THERE IS SOME BUBBLING OR CHIPPING GOING ON AFTER ONLY A FEW MONTHS.
CLOTH HEADLINER AT SLIDING DOOR WILL NOT STAY UNDERNEATH THE DOOR GASKET.
WHEN THE VAN IS STATIONARY AND RUNNING FOR 10-15 MINUTES, HALF OF THE CARGO FLOOR (BEHIND THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER SEATS) REACHES A TEMPERATURE OF 125-130 DEGREES. A TEMP GUN WAS USED TO DEMONSTRATE THIS SAFETY HAZARD. I MADE MENTION OF THIS TO AN AUTOBODY SHOP WHO SUGGESTED HAVING THE DEALERSHIP TAKE A LOOK SINCE THAT DOESN'T SOUND RIGHT. WHEN THE DEALERSHIP IN WEST PALM BEACH (AL PACKER, 561-689-6550) LOOKED OVER THIS, THEY STATED THIS IS AS DESIGNED AND IT MATCHES A FEW OTHER FORD TRANSITS THEY CHECKED. THEY SAID NOTHING CAN BE DONE TO ASSIST ME EVEN THOUGH THIS IS A CLEAR SAFETY HAZARD AS A TEMPERATURE OF 130 DEGREES CAN CAUSE FIRST DEGREE BURN IF IN CONTACT FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS (SEE ATTACHED IMAGE REFERENCES). WHEN I SPOKE TO FORD MOTORS (800-392-3673), THEY SAID IT'S UP TO THE DEALERSHIPS TO SPEAK WITH THE ENGINEERING DEPT IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE INTO ANYTHING AND THAT THEY ALSO CANT DO ANYTHING BESIDES ADD COMMENTS TO MY CASE NUMBER (15138348) WHICH WOULD BE SUPPLIED TO THE SERVICE DELIVERY MANAGER I ALREADY WORKED WITH (STEVEN THOMAS). THIS IS A BRAND NEW VEHICLE (2500 MILES SO FAR) AND I'VE NEVER SEEN OR HEARD OF ANY WHERE IT'S EXPECTED TO WORK WITH A FLOOR SPACE THAT GETS 130 DEGREES HOT. I'M LOOKING TO GET FORD TO AGREE TO A SAFETY RECALL TO ADDRESS THE INSUFFICIENT HEAT SHIELDING WITH THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER.
Component Failure Cascade Risk
Known patterns where one defect leads to more severe downstream failures
▸ Head gasket failure and engine overheating — EGR cooler failure is the leading cause of catastrophic engine failure on diesel engines
▸ Loss of brake assist and ABS in emergency — can significantly extend stopping distances
Complaint & Reliability Timeline
Annual complaints (blue) vs. composite reliability score (amber) — recall years marked in red
The blue line shows 55 total NHTSA complaints filed over 9 years, with the worst year being 2023 (10 complaints).
The amber reliability line is declining — recent years score around 51/100, lower than earlier in the vehicle's life. This pattern indicates issues are accumulating over time rather than being resolved, which is a concern for used buyers.
The recalls (red dashed lines) were issued in the same year or before complaints peaked, suggesting the manufacturer identified and acted on the defect relatively quickly.
Red dots on the amber line flag 2025, a year when complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
Manufacturer Extended Warranties & Special Coverage
1 known program match this vehicle — verify current eligibility with dealer using your VIN
1.5L and 1.6L EcoBoost engines in select Ford vehicles develop a cylinder head crack that allows coolant to enter the combustion chamber without visible external leak. This can cause engine stalling, misfires, and severe damage. Ford extended coverage under Customer Satisfaction Program 15B22 and related programs.
Coverage eligibility depends on your VIN, original sale date, and current mileage. Always verify with an authorized dealer or manufacturer customer service — programs may have been updated since this database was compiled.
