ODI #11743915POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Shortly after purchasing my 2022 Ford Escape, I began experiencing hesitation during acceleration, loss of power, RPM fluctuations, loud howling and whining noises, grinding noises, exhaust-related rattling, coolant bubbling, and a strong sulfur/rotten egg odor. The problems were reported repeatedly to the selling dealer and Ford service departments. Despite multiple complaints, I was repeatedly told nothing was wrong with the vehicle. The vehicle continued to deteriorate and now struggles to accelerate and produces extremely loud noises during operation. The condition creates a safety concern because the vehicle does not respond normally when accelerating and may not be able to maintain speed safely in traffic. I also discovered an open safety recall involving a potentially cracked fuel injector that could allow fuel or fuel vapor to accumulate on the engine and create a fire risk. The recall remains incomplete because a remedy is not currently available. The vehicle has been inspected by dealership service departments and an independent transmission specialist. The problems have been ongoing since shortly after purchase and continue to worsen.

As I was driving, I heard a sliding sound and something bumping every time I braked. It was hard to tell where it was coming from, but It sounded like it was above the sunroof shade. When I stopped, I pushed the open button to open the shade and a large metal piece that goes between the sunroof glass pieces came crashing down. At the same time, the shade unhooked and snapped back into the headliner, making a hole in the liner and an incredibly loud noise. If my pets or a passenger were in the back seat, they definitely would have been hit by the metal piece and possibly the shade. The noise itself could have caused a crash had I been driving. There was no warning about this, and when I called the dealer, they said they hadn't heard of it. However, online, there are significant reports of this metal piece coming off in the Ford Escape, especially in the heat. It is only held on by double sided tape.

Nov 20,2025 Manufacturer Recall Number25SC4 NHTSA Recall Number25V789 Recall Status Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available We purchased our vehicle with the intent of using it for a daily work commute, the range of the battery being perfect for this. We now find that the vehicle is not 100% safe to charge or drive in the manner intended and no remedy has been supplied by Ford, nor is one expected. We were advised by Ford not to charge it at all lest it catch fire. After several months we were told to charge it to only 80% to avoid the possibility of a fire while driving or when parked and charging. After a checkup we initiated with our local Ford mechanics in early 2026, we were told that the car was now safe to charge 100% and the recall could be ignored. We believed this to be the case. However, while having our car valued for a trade in, a dealer told us that the car still had an open recall on the battery which should definitely not be ignored. Ford’s own website says no fix is expected, no parts are available and the fire danger is still present because the issue is battery related, not a software one. Samsung who manufactured the batteries recalled them in February 2025. [XXX] We are no longer able use the car as intended: 80% of charge moving a 440Lb battery leaves short of the 35 miles we expect. Not utilizing the entire range of the battery, has cost us money in the purchase of gas which we should not have incurred. The vehicle is stored in a garage adjacent to our home, and were it to catch fire, we would lose everything. We wish to sell the car, but feel we shouldn't with such a dangerous safety unresolved flaw. Our vehicle has decreased in value by 66% since 2022 which has impacted our trade in value severely. This car is a financial impediment a potential danger to our safety and home and a nightmare to own. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

While driving down the road my passenger went to open the sunroof. That involves retracting the shade first. While the shade was retracting I heard a pop and then a crunching noise. The shade then drooped into the back seat area blocking any vision to the rear of the vehicle. It also was quite startling and distracting while driving. Contacted the dealer and set an appointment to get it looked at. Brought the vehicle in for its appointment about a week later. Was notified that a trim moulding ( part # LJ6Z5450036A) that was held up by two sided tape fell off and caused the shade to jam up and break. The moulding had fallen off with the shade closed so there was no way to know it had failed. Was initially quoted $2500 to repair it. The vehicle was less than 60 days out of Ford’s 3 year 36000 mile warranty. I even have a Ford 8 year 75000 mile extended warranty but was told that trim pieces were not covered by warranty. I asked the dealer to contact Ford to ask for assistance in paying for the repair. Ford came back and offered to repair it for $498.38. I authorized that repair and received the vehicle back. Shade is now functional but it appears that there has been no improvement to the moulding to keep it from having a repeat failure. If the moulding had fallen with the shade open it could have possibly struck an occupant and caused issues if driving.

This hasn't caused an accident or stranded me yet, but Ford won't do anything to help me avoid danger in the faulty vehicle they sold. There have been several recalls on my 2022 Ford Escape PHEV over the past year or so, including safety recalls. The number of recalls, requiring me to take the time to deal with scheduling, drop off/pickup the car, and being unable to use the car when it is in the shop for the recall rectifications seems excessive. Worse yet, they have safety related recalls from 2025 that still do not have a fix. I do not feel safe in my car. I went through the company's lemon recall process and they refused to repurchase the vehicle. People should expect a basic level of quality and definitely safety when buying a car. I will never buy another Ford and would never recommend that anyone else do so. This company no longer represents quality and they don't even care to try.

On March 31st, 2026, while traveling at approximately 60 mph on a major highway, the vehicle suffered a catastrophic engine failure without prior warning. The "Check Engine" and "Powertrain Malfunction" (Wrench) lights illuminated, and the vehicle experienced an immediate and total loss of motive power. This created a high-risk safety situation for myself (luckily my daughter was not with me at the time), I was forced navigate through high-speed traffic to the shoulder with no engine propulsion. Technical Confirmation: The vehicle was towed to Dick Smith Ford (Columbia, SC). A diagnostic scan revealed fault code P032F (Combustion Engine Producing Insufficient Torque). The dealership confirmed the failure was internal and required a total Long Block Engine Assembly replacement in accordance with CSP 23NC06 (Reference RO #259050). Failure of Previous Safety Recall: Crucially, this vehicle had already received the "remedy" for Recall 23S27 / NHTSA Campaign 23V440000 (Engine Fire Risk). Despite Ford's claim that the software update and grill shutter modifications mitigated the risk of catastrophic failure and fire, the engine still suffered a major breach and total failure at highway speeds. This demonstrates that the current recall remedy is insufficient to protect occupants from sudden loss of power or potential fire hazards.

I have had issues with my car since the day that I bought it. First, my car squealed every time that I backed up. I took it to my local Ford dealership 3 or 4 times without this ever being fixed. This then progressed to my brakes squealing anytime they’re used. I barely have 25,000 miles on my car. Additionally, I have had numerous occasions where my car will get stuck and not shift, not accelerate which is extremely scary when merging into traffic, the RPM’s will jump between 3,000 and 5,000 and stay there while I cannot accelerate or shift. The vehicle has had episodes of shaking while I am driving, and now there is a grinding sound when driving for unknown reasons. My car has also sounded like there is a hole in the exhaust, although there isn’t. I’m not sure what’s causing the noise. Now I have come to find out that there are two active recalls on my car; one for the PCM control module (NHTSA Recall Number: 25V-467, Ford Recall Number: 24S55), and the SYNC/ display software update (NHTSA Recall Number: 26V-123, Ford Recall Number: 25S06) which is a lesser concern. I called the dealer that I bought my car from and they can’t service my car for the PCM control module via an appointment until 4/24/26 (over a month from now when I don’t feel safe driving my vehicle). They said that I can drop my car off before 4/24 for about a week, but that they can’t provide a loaner. I can’t be without a vehicle. Per Ford there are not parts for a permanent remedy anyway, and this is only a temporary fix as it is, which I don’t have confidence in. That’s ridiculous because the recall came out 7/2025. It’s been almost a year. They also told me that the SYNC software update is only a customer satisfaction, not a recall, so they won’t fix it, which is incorrect. I called Ford customer satisfaction and was also denied a loaner car. The only option that I was given was the possibility of a buyback program, which didn’t sound promising. I’m stuck in a car that I don’t feel safe in.

The Incident: While traveling at highway speeds on a public freeway, the engine suffered a catastrophic failure and stalled without warning. This caused an immediate loss of propulsion, power steering, and power braking. I was forced to navigate the vehicle across multiple lanes of high-speed traffic with no engine power, nearly resulting in a fatal collision. Background and Safety Risk: This is the second terminal engine failure this vehicle has suffered in under 60,000 miles. The first engine was replaced by a Ford dealer at approximately 30,000 miles due to a similar failure. The replacement engine has now failed at approximately 53,000 miles. This vehicle is also subject to Safety Recall 25S76 (Fuel Injector/Fire Hazard). Current Status: The defect has been confirmed by a Ford dealership which previously performed a full engine replacement. The manufacturer has not provided a permanent remedy for the current failure or the active fire recall. The suspected malfunctioning component is the fuel injector(s), part of the fuel system(gasoline). The vehicle is currently in my possession and is available for inspection upon request. An independent mechanic believes the issue is injector-related and consistent with a known injector defect. The vehicle is subject to a fuel injector recall that wards of fuel accumulation on top of the engine, creating a risk of under-hood fire. In addition the vehicle experiences intermittent stall-on-start and engine shaking/misfiring during startup, which could leave the vehicle inoperable or unreliable, particularly in traffic or emergency situations. Yes. An independent mechanic has evaluated the vehicle and believes the symptoms are consistent with a fuel injector failure or fuel pressure bleed-down. The issue is intermittent and does not always reproduce on demand, which has made consistent replication difficult. The vehicle has not yet been physically inspected by the manufacturer. However, Ford Motor Company has an open case on this vehicle, and the VIN is listed under an injector-related recall/customer satisfaction program. No police or insurance inspections have occurred. No warning lights or messages have appeared. Symptoms include delayed starting, engine shaking/misfiring during startup, and stalling on the first start attempt, followed by normal starting on a second attempt. These symptoms began intermittently and have become more noticeable over time.

A Terrifying Ordeal and a Broken Promise: M.A’s Story A Known Danger Ignored In August 2025, M.A, a [XXX] woman living with Multiple Sclerosis, received a letter from Ford Motor Company. It was a recall notice for her 2022 Ford Escape, warning that a defect in the turbo system could cause engine fires. Despite this known danger, the letter contained a chilling instruction: there was "no recommendation to stop operating the vehicle." Trusting the manufacturer, M.A continued to drive her car—her essential link to independence. A Nightmare on the Road Two months later, in October 2025, that trust nearly cost M.A her life. While driving in Windsor, Ontario, she saw smoke, then flames erupt from under the hood. In a horrifying instant, the engine compartment burst into fire. Paralyzed by panic—a "brain freeze" moment where she couldn't even unlock her door—she was trapped. Only with the help of bystanders was she pulled to safety, where she watched helplessly as her car and everything she owned—clothes, jewelry, two laptops, an iPad, and three suitcases—were consumed by flames. Physical and Emotional Devastation The fire was extinguished, and the car was towed away, but the damage to M.A’s life was just beginning. The traumatic event triggered a severe relapse of her Multiple Sclerosis, worsening her physical disability. The profound stress and sadness have been overwhelming. She is now without a vehicle, struggling daily with lost mobility and independence. Abandoned by the Company at Fault When M.A contacted Ford for help, seeking accountability for the defect they had already acknowledged, she was met with indifference. Vehicle: 2022 Ford Escape VIN: [XXX] Dealer: Westfield Ford, Countryside IL Problem: Rear light repeatedly fails even after multiple repairs; vehicle becomes unsafe and illegal to drive. The rear tail light on my 2022 Ford Escape has failed repeatedly since early Spring 2025. The dealer (Westfield Ford) has attempted repairs 5 times, including replacing bulbs and diagnosing the wiring/computer system. Each repair fails again shortly after. On June 12, 2025, the dealer refused to provide a loaner for a safety repair, forcing me to rent a car at my own expense. On October 9–10, 2025, I left the car again for diagnostics and had to pay for Uber rides because the vehicle could not be legally driven with the light out. The dealership now says the computer module (BCM) is defective, but they still refuse to open a warranty claim, so no repairs have been completed. The vehicle remains unsafe to drive due to loss of exterior rear lighting. This defect makes the vehicle non-compliant with FMVSS lighting standards and creates a serious safety hazard for nighttime or low-visibility driving. I am filing this complaint because the defect is ongoing, Ford and the dealer have failed to resolve it, and the car continues to have a recurring lighting failure that affects road safety. The 2022 Ford Escape has an optional "Panoramic Vista View" sunroof with shade. This is a very large/long shade. A bar breaks in the sunroof mechanism that falls down onto the shade. This part could intrude into the cabin. The results are sagging and "bunching up" as the sunroof shade unfurls down onto rear passengers, including infants, children.

I am writing to formally demand immediate action regarding my 2022 Ford Escape, VIN [XXX] a 0% financing plan and Ford’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Since purchase, the Escape has suffered serious safety defects, including gasoline fumes inside the cabin, burning odors, and repeated performance failures tied to the fuel system. On [XXX] and again on [XXX], the vehicle flamed up while being driven, requiring emergency intervention to extinguish. In August 2025, Ford issued Safety Recall 25S76, admitting that these vehicles may suffer fuel injector cracking, fuel leaks, and under-hood fires while being driven. Ford further admitted that no permanent repair remedy exists. The interim software update provided does not correct the defect. As a retired U.S. Army Combat Medic and Purple Heart recipient, I live with PTSD triggered by vehicle fires and explosions. The Escape’s condition has placed me in a state of medical crisis, making it impossible for me to safely operate the vehicle. FORD HAS DISCONTINUED THE LINE. Sunroof sunshade snagged on a plastic plate that is attached to the underside of the roof, between the sunroof and the panoramic glass over the back seat. it is a cosmetic element. The plastic plate is held to the roof with pins and double stick adhesive pads. The adhesive on the pads failed causing the plastic plate to drop away from the roof, held by the plastic pins. On closing the sunroof the returning sunshade again engaged with the plastic plate dislodging it. Sunshade retaining clip on the passenger side, completely snapped off from the travel bar when it engaged the poorly attached plastic plate and the sunshade disengaged from the motor track and snapped into the slot at the back of the roof. Vehicle has an issue with braking system. When attempting to stop, the brake pedal required much more force to be applied that subsequently increased stopping distance. However, this condition occurred to the owner of the vehicle as well as the vehicle owner's son (that is in the auto industry as an insurance adjuster). The entire panel and screen goes off and on countless times when driving. Cannot see speed or anything when panel shuts off. Makes it even more dangerous at night. It is also very distracting. The problem has been confirmed by FORD and dealer. They still can’t fix it. They have had our car for almost 2 months with no resolution. It started first with screen powering off and on countless times and then the entire panel. I have been told so many different times things. I have requested documentation and they will not provide me with anything other than vague emails with no answers. I was told several things: wrong part installed by Ford, severe wiring issue, wrong program possibly installed when trying to resolve the issue. The car was even pulling to the right and left but they said that had nothing to do with panel but just a dirty sensor, which I don’t know if I believe or not. They also stated the first issue had nothing to do with the recall even though it sounds and appears very similar. Me not being a mechanic, they can tell me anything. What I have not been told is what the problem is and we do not feel safe taking the car back but Ford is offering us nothing other than empty, vague answers. April 2024 - While driving to work, I stopped at a stop sign. When I went to turn, the car went into neutral. I had to turn the car off and restart before I could change the gears. I took it to the dealer who stated they could not get the vehicle to replicate what happened and to keep eye on it. November 22, 2024 on my way home as I was exiting off the highway, the vehicle starting lunging then shifted into neutral on its own. I was able to stop and put it back into drive. When I tried to drive, it went back into neutral and started lunging forward. I could not get it back into drive but was able to go in neutral 5 mph and made it home. Once in the driveway, I tried to backup and it would not reverse. I turned off the vehicle and restarted it several times and was able to back up then drove straight to the dealer. They did a diagnostic and said the transmission needed replaced. This should not happen on a 2 year old vehicle. I noticed on your website 9 recalls for 2022 Ford Escapes. The only recall I received was for the doors. I took my vehicle in to have those fixed and those have been on backorder since April. My driver's side has only 1 hinge holding it on. I pray it doesn't fall off while driving.

Powertrain malfunction/ reduce power. My safety was fine, it just gave me really bad anxiety when the the gears shift shifted on its own. The problem was finally fixed it started literally less than five days after I bought my car and I bought my car brand new it took the dealership almost 2 years to believe me on what was wrong with it then of course I try to get blamed when I showed them proof on my phone that it was popping up a different times in the last two years. Yes Yes it started 3/27/22 - 2/01/24 Now I feel like I’m having problems with my brakes sometimes I feel like I gotta press on my heart to get them to stop and then it’s like my car is delaying when it’s stopping. Yet I checked to see if my car had any new recalls and nothing’s coming up. The powertrain malfunction didn’t even come up as a recall yet I had Ford fix it.

Rear brakes squeak/moan when in reverse. The recent TSB from Ford states this is a recurring issue with Escape owners. My vehicle underwent the fix (which should have only taken 0.70 hours, but took 3 hours on a scheduled appointment), only to get the vehicle back and the sound is even louder than it was before. Vehicle went back in for said concern. They installed a brake muffler piece to help muffle the noise. However, whatever was done has now made the brakes loose and the peddle needs to be pushed almost to the ground. So again, the fix isn't the actual fix. Upon getting my SUV back within 2 days it continues with that horrendous noise backing out, slowing down, coming to a stop and stopping. Took it back again and they changed a rotor. The service department is closed on the weekends. Immediately upon getting my vehicle it does it again, but it was a Friday. This time, I take my SUV into the dealership and explain what it's doing. They have a tech take a ride. It makes a faint noise, of course, but he heard it. Now my vehicle the brakes are squealing so loud that you would think I would need new brake pads. My vehicle goes back into the dealership for the 3rd time on Thursday! The service department is absolutely clueless on how to fix this issue! Absolutely clueless!

After having my car for 6 months it began making a terrible noise first thing in the morning when I back out and apply the brakes. It is a bad groaning/moaning noise. When I took it in for service to the dealer they said they could not replicate the problem. The noise continued and I took it again for its regular scheduled maintenance and was again told they could not replicate the noise and that they checked the brakes and everything is fine. It is not fine...I am waiting to the brakes to fail it sounds so bad.

I used to drive my Ford Escape just perfectly and I was happy. I liked it. One day in December 2022, I drove my car normally and perfectly during the day. Then, after work, I went to do my shopping. After I finished shopping, I drove my car again. I changed the cruise control settings. After less than a mile, I was tuning left at low and normal speed less than 10MPH. Suddenly, I found the car accelerated on its own and I lost the control of the wheel. I did not feel the pedals under my feet, no resistance. Every thing was out of my control. Then, the car hit a tree. Fortunately, no injury, I had a pain lasted for weeks, but no injury. There are huge smokes, but no fire. The car was declared as a total loss, and I lost a lot of money. After that I was curious what happened to me. I found complaints about Ford Escape, in which the drivers stating the same experience as mine. The accelerated on its own after adjusting the cruise control. That’s inspired me to complain and warn other driver about the safety of this car. I don’t know the main reason the car accelerated, but I hope it will be investigated. However, I found that Ford has a recall in the last week of November (a week before my accident) related to fuel injection. I searched again and I found that the problems on car’s computer, fuel injector or ECU could lead to uncontrolled amount of fuel passing to the engine and may cause acceleration or burn. I am very lucky that the acceleration didn’t hit people or the car burnt from speed and heat. Again, I don’t know what happened, but I hope it will be investigated to safe lives of others. Photos can be supported upon request. The car is now with the insurance company.

There is an issue with the brakes and brake dust covers the wheel. The brakes have been squealing when pressed since the vehicle was leased. Each time I inquired at the dealership I was told it was because the brakes were new. Since they brakes continued to squeal after months, I asked service to look at them for me. They did, and said everything looked fine. As of now the front driver side wheel is completely covered in a black substance. Possibly brake dust and the brakes still squeal. The overall braking performance on my new Escape has left me very concerned about the safety and dependability of my brakes. The brakes are unreasonably loud and down right startling, especially at low speeds. They often times feel, react, and sound as if they are wet; even when they are bone dry. My brakes will often times stop the vehicle abruptly and feel too grabby while making a loud noise. The brakes are also producing an excessive amount of brake dust on the wheels. I had my vehicle checked out by a Ford dealer, and they confirmed this is "normal" for this type of vehicle and that no fix is currently available. A simple internet search revealed many others who are experiencing the same problem. Something is really not right here.

ODI #11479944VEHICLE SPEED CONTROLCRASH

On June 21 Inn the afternoon my wife and I were driving on I-94 near Minneapolis, MN in a rental car. Suddenly the car started accelerating on its own – and the acceleration was aggressive (“pedal to the metal” type acceleration). I hit the brakes but nothing happened. As the car continued to accelerate I pumped the brakes taped on the accelerator and hit the ignition switch but nothing would slow the car. I could see congestion further ahead of us with slow moving vehicles and all lanes occupied. I started looking for an escape route – one that would hopefully enable us to survive while not hurting/injuring others. To my right I saw a an entry or exit ramp and on the other side of the ramp was an embankment. I turned toward the embankment, crossing the ramp and going up the embankment not knowing what was on the other side of it. I must have been going at least 100 mph when I topped the embankment. As we went over the embankment I looked down and saw a parking lot that looked vacant. It seemed to me that the parking lot was 6-8 feet below us (the EMT later said it was 10-12 ft). We both lost consciousness when we hit the ground in the parking lot (and the air bags deployed). When we regained consciousness we had hit an object in the parking lot. The rescue squad arrived soon thereafter. An hour earlier that afternoon I was adjusting the cruise control when suddenly the car accelerated unexpectedly. I hit the brakes and the cruise control went off as it should. I then attempted to adjust it again and again the car accelerated unexpectedly. This time when I hit the brakes the car continued to accelerate. I pumped the brakes but the acceleration continued. The car finally stopped accelerating when I turned the cruise control off. I wondered if I should continue using the cruise control since it had malfunctioned but decided to try it and it seemed to be working so I continued on using the cruise control. In hindsight that was a serious mistake.
