Monitor Deferred Risk
The engine/powertrain system is the most-reported problem for the 2017 CHRYSLER 200 — 22 NHTSA complaints (51% of all filings). Prioritize it in a pre-purchase inspection.
⚠No odometer data on record. Items marked VERIFY below are age-based maintenance reminders — general guidance, not confirmed findings for this specific vehicle. Confirm actual mileage and service history with the seller.
COMMONLY REPORTEDCriticalEngine/Powertrain
22 owner complaints · 51% of all filings
Inspect the engine/powertrain system before purchase — the most-reported problem for the 2017 CHRYSLER 200
Owners of the 2017 CHRYSLER 200 report engine/powertrain issues more than most other systems. Complaints concentrated in one area often signal a systemic weakness worth a targeted pre-purchase inspection.
COMMONLY REPORTEDCriticalElectrical
10 owner complaints · 23% of all filings

Owners of the 2017 CHRYSLER 200 report electrical issues more than most other systems. Complaints concentrated in one area often signal a systemic weakness worth a targeted pre-purchase inspection.
VERIFYCriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Typical interval: 120,000 mi / 10 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify timing chain tensioner service history with the seller
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
VERIFYCriticalWater Pump
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 8 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify water pump service history with the seller
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
VERIFYHighTransmission Fluid / Service
Typical interval: 60,000 mi / 5 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify transmission fluid / service service history with the seller
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
VERIFYHighCoolant Flush
Manufacturer interval: 150,000 mi / 10 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify coolant flush service history with the seller
✓ per published maintenance schedule
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
VERIFYModerateSpark Plugs (iridium/platinum)
Typical interval: 100,000 mi / 8 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify spark plugs (iridium/platinum) service history with the seller
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
VERIFYModerateFuel Injectors
Typical interval: 120,000 mi / 10 yr · Verify service records (no odometer on file)
Verify fuel injectors service history with the seller
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.

SummaryChrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

We have an airbag warning light that keeps coming on. It's been reset by a repair garage, but has returned this week. ODI #11637865ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER

The car is constantly needs a jump start , and the pedal will not accelerate. I have had multiple diagnosis and they don’t know what it is- the cruise control component comes on at the beginning of the jump start until the car runs. Auto Zone and Midas has checked the battery, alternator, did a draw and they can’t find the issue. When driving the pedal will not accelerate- may have to pull over, and restart- then it works, until you disengage the car. They charged me over 30,000.00 dollars for this vehicle and I’m still paying on it and I can’t even drive it because I feel unsafe, especially with the pedal. It’s too cold to get up and jump start a car every morning. I’m paying 460.54 every month for a car that I don’t know that’s wrong with it- I purchase a warranty and though I didn’t hit the mileage they said it expired because it was for three years. This should be illegal. I really need to drive to get things done. There’s no lights coming to indicate a problem, please assist. it kept [XXX] cutting off and the cruise control, then it stopped. Tried to connect with Chrysler they said they were backed up, only speed issues, like accelerating faster than the mileage, now since it got cold - it won’t even crank up without a jump start, but all things checked and the mechanics can’t find the reason saying it’s electrical. Do you think Chrysler OS messing with my car because that’s dangerous and this is stressful- I’ll send the police report need to find INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

While driving down the interstate my car jumped a little then I could not go above 20 miles and hour. Once I arrived to a safe location I turned off my engine and then restarted. It seemed ok, but during the incident there was a flash on my dash that said "CHECK THROTTLE". I took it to a service station and they ran a code check on the vehicle. They stated the following: 1. ECM (Engine Control Module) 2. TCM (Transmission Control Module) 3. ORC (Air Bag/Occupant Restraint) My car is a 2017 Chrysler 200 VIN [XXX]. It has 55,600 miles on it, actual miles. Due to these error codes the mechanic stated I need to take the car to a dealership to have them fixed. I have been having trouble with my car for a while where it, most of the time, won’t start on the first try. I’ve been to my dealership multiple times and it just seems as if my car is declining after each session. I can’t even remote start my vehicle anymore. There will be times where I am stopped for a period of time and my car will stall and/or glitch out. The Stability Control and Electric Park Brake Trouble Indicators will come on as well as the Anti-lock Brake System Fault and Electric Power Steering Fault Indicators…All at the same time. I will be looking around for Auto Shops that I trust but later down the line, if there is no breakthrough, I will buy another vehicle.

ODI #11444990POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE

For years now, my car has randomly, without notice, stalls, says “Shift To P” and goes limp. There’s nothing I can do in that moment besides try to get to safety before the car stops in the middle of the road. I’ve brought it in multiple times with no change or information as to what’s causing it. One dealership claimed I just needed an oil change which it didn’t but to prove my point, I brought it in after it stalled 2-3 days after an oil change. At this point, there’s been zero help or care. It’s only a matter of time until it causes an accident. Other owners definitely have this issue as well since they’re reported on here too. Any help? Or do all of us just lose money or potentially more…?

I TURNED ON MY EMERGENCY BLANKERS THE 2ND TIME IT HAPPENED, AND I LET OTHER DRIVERS KNOW TO GO AROUND ME BECAUSE IT TOOK A LITTLE LONGER TO RESTART. I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE BRAND NEW IN 2017 AND STARTED EXPERIENCING ISSUES WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR. THE CAR HAS CUT OFF MULTIPLE TIMES WHILE DRIVING, WITHOUT WARNING, IN THE MIDDLE OF RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. IT ALSO FREQUENTLY STALLS. I'VE TAKEN MY VEHICLE TO 3 DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS IN 2 DIFFERENT STATES AT LEAST 10 TIMES. TWO OF THE THREE DEALERSHIPS CLAIMED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS SOME SORT OF FUSE UNDERNEATH THE DRIVER'S SEAT. AFTER THE CAR CONTINUED TO SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING, I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS DUE TO LOW OIL. I'VE CALLED CHRYSLER'S HEADQUARTERS WHO HAS GIVEN ME A FREE OIL CHANGE PACKAGE AND INSTRUCTED ME TO RETURN TO A DEALERSHIP EVERY 500 - 1000 MILES FOR AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. THEY KNOW THAT THE CAR IS BURNING AN UNUSUAL AMOUNT OF OIL WHICH IS A CLEAR INDICATION THAT THERE'S A PROBLEM. INSTEAD OF ISSUING A RECALL, THEY CONTINUE TO PUT LIVES IN DANGER BY GIVING THEM BACK THEIR DEATH TRAP OF A CAR AND INSTRUCTING THEM TO CHECK AND GET FREQUENT OIL CHANGES. I'M GUESSING THEIR HOPE IS TO KEEP THE OIL CHANGES GOING UNTIL THE WARRANTY RUNS OUT. SOMEONE'S GOING TO LOSE THEIR LIFE OR GET SERIOUSLY INJURED IN THESE CARS, I JUST PRAY THAT IT'S NOT ME.

A MULTITUDE OF DIFFERENT ISSUES WITH THE TRANSMISSION; TRANSMISSION WILL EXPERIENCE DELAYED SHIFTS (OR DELAYS WHEN SHIFTING INTO REVERSE, DRIVE OR ANY OTHER GEAR THEN VEHICLE WILL CLUNK INTO GEAR), HARSH SHIFTING, RANDOM DOWN SHIFTING WHILE DRIVING AND SLAMMING INTO GEAR, SQUEAKING NOISE WHEN SHIFTING FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE. TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICING WHERE THEY LOOKED OVER, THEY NOTICED THE ISSUES AND RAN SOFTWARE UPDATES ON MY SHIFTER AND FOR THE TRANSMISSION. THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTED SO THE TECH CONTACTED FCA AND THEY INFORMED THE DEALERSHIP THAT "IT'S SUPPOSED TO DO THAT." THIS IS NOT THE NORM OF ANY TRANSMISSION.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 CHRYSLER 200. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS AND DECELERATING, THE VEHICLE STARTED TO PULL AND ALL THE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. IN ADDITION, WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER WITHOUT WARNING. ONCE RESTARTED, THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO DRIVE NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT IT NEEDED AN OIL CHANGE. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TAKEN TO POSNER PARK CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM FIAT (LOCATED AT 42650 US-27, DAVENPORT, FL 33837, (863) 438-3333) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BATTERY FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,428.

I NOTICED THERE WERE RECALLS FOR THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS AND I HAVE SEEN ALL OF THESE HAPPEN TO MY VEHICLE BUT THEY HAVEN'T BEEN FIXED. CRUISE CONTROL WONT COME OFF UNLESS YOU HIT THE BRAKES 5 OR 6 TIMES AND RANDOMLY SPEEDS UP WITHOUT SHIFTING. WHEN THIS STARTED HAPPENING MY GAS MILEAGE WENT WAY DOWN AND THE ENGINE LIGHT KEEPS FLASHING. THE CODES COMING UP ARE CYLINDER MISFIRE AND AIR FUEL RATIO. I HAVE TALKED TO SEVERAL PEOPLE WHO SAID THEY HAD A SIMILAR ISSUE AND THEIR DEALERSHIP FIXED IT. I WAS TOLD THERE WERE NO RECALLS AND NOTHING COULD BE DONE. NOT HAPPY

THE ENGINE STALLS WHEN COMING TO A STOP SUCH AS A STOP LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. THE ENGINE ALSO STALLS AND SHUTS OFF WHEN ACCELERATING AFTER STOPPING. IT STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION WHILE TURNING OUT OF MY APARTMENT COMPLEX INTO A BUSY MAIN ROAD. I WAS ABLE TO COAST OFF OF THE ROAD AND TRIED TO RESTART. UPON TRYING TO RESTART IT HESITATED TO TURN OVER AND START. IT TOOK ABOUT 2 MINUTES BEFORE IT FINALLY STARTED AND IT DIDN'T WANT TO ACCELERATE. THERE WAS NO WARNING THAT IT WAS GETTING READY TO STALL. AFTER IT STARTED UP AGAIN A MESSAGE CAME UP SAYING THAT THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE NEEDED TO BE SERVICED. THIS MAKES THE 3RD TIME IT HAD STALLED BUT THE 1ST TIME IT HAS GIVEN ME ANY KIND OF INDICATION WHY.

MY CHRYSLER 200 STARTED SHUTTING ITSELF OFF WHILE DRIVING. THE LIGHTS AND RADIO STAY ON BUT THE BRAKES AND STEERING ARE MANUAL. THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT I WAS LOW ON OIL AND THAT THE CAR IS EQUIPPED WITH A SAFETY FEATURE TO SHUT THE CAR OFF WHEN OIL IS LOW. THIS CAR IS 10 MTHS OLD AND ONLY 11K MILES. IT CONTINUED AFTER THAT VISIT AND AFTER SHAMING CHRYSLER ON TWITTER, THEY OPTED TO REPLACE THE MOTOR. THE PROBLEM IS THIS CAR SHUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING. THE ENGINES ARE THE SAME AND THIS PROBLEM WILL KILL SOMEONE. THE AUTO IS NOT EQUIPPED WITH A LOW OIL LIGHT AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD TO CHECK OIL EVERY MONTH! I AM PICKING THE CAR UP TODAY WITH AN ENGINE THAT IS NEW TO THIS CAR BUT, I AM PETRIFIED TO DRIVE IT. IF IT SHUTS OFF ON THE FREEWAY, HOW AM I TO GET OVER BEFORE I GET HIT. CHRYSLER STATES THAT IS NO PROBLEM IF THIS ENGINE IS FAULTY BECAUSE THEY WILL COVER UNDER WARRANTY. WHAT WILL IT TAKE-SOMEONE DYING? I DO NOT WANT TO BE THAT PERSON. SINCE I AM GOING TO GET THIS DEATH TRAP I CALLED TO MAKE SURE THEY FIXED THE CRUISE CONTROL. DEALERSHIP STATED THAT THE CAR IS NOT ON RECALL. FROM ALL MY RESEARCH ALL 200'S ARE ON RECALL. SO, NOW I HAVE A CAR THAT WILL TURN OFF WHEN THE OIL GETS LOW (WITH NO WARNING LIGHT TO TELL YOU OIL IS LOW) AND I CANNOT USE THE CRUISE CONTROL.

PARKED VEHICLE. WHILE VEHICLE ENGINE STILL RUNNING AND PLACED IN PARK, I REMOVED MY DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELT. WITHIN 10 SECONDS OF DOING SO, THE PANEL FLASHED THAT THE AWD WAS DISABLED, THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE WARNING INDICATOR STATED TO "HAVE PARKING BRAKE SERVICED" I HAD NOT ENGAGED THE ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE MANUALLY, BUT ATTEMPTED TO REVERSE THE VEHICLE, ONLY TO FIND THE PARKING BRAKE HAD ENGAGED ON IT'S OWN. I WORK IN AUTOMOTIVE WARRANTY, SO I LOGGED INTO MY WORK ACCOUNT AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH A SHORT IN THE ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE SYTEM AND IS RELATED TO THE SEAT BELT. I PLACED VEHICLE IN PARK, CUT THE POWER TO THE ENGINE, WAITED FOR A FEW MINUTES, REPLACED MY SEAT BELT AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE. ALL THE SAME CODES FLASHED ON THE PANEL FOR A ABOUT 20 SECONDS, AND THEN CLEARED. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE ON THIS VEHICLE AND HAS AN EPA ISSUED FOR THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SHORT FOR THE PARKING BREAK AND ABS SYSTEM. NOT SURE WHY THERE ISN'T AN OFFICIAL RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE AS IF IT WERE TO OCCUR WHILE DRIVING, INJURY WOULD MOST LIKELY OCCUR WHEN PARKING BRAKE SYSTEM SELF ENGAGES.

FEBRUARY 23, 2018 MY VEHICLE DID AN UPDATE THAT NIGHT; THAT AT WHEN IT STARTED. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP THE SAME NIGHT AND TALK WITH EMIL THE FINANCE MANAGER. HE TOLD ME TO BRING IT IN THE NEXT DAY. WHICH WAS FEBRUARY 24, 2018. MY I WAS TOLD IT WAS READY ONE WEEK LATER SO I GO TO PICK IT UP. THE PROBLEM WASN'T FIXED. I LEFT IT THERE. I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM MELINDA SAYING A TECHNICIAN DROVE MY CAR AND THE TRANSMISSION SLAMMED SO HARD THE TECH THOUGHT IT FELL OUT THE VEHICLE. SO MY TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED. SO I PICKED MY CAR UP APRIL 2018; ONE WEEK LATER IT IS JERKING AS I DRIVE DOWN A HILL. THEM AGAIN IN A FLAT PARKING G LOT. SO I CALL THE DEALERSHIP TO RETURN IT AND THEY CAN'T GET IT TO DUPLICATE WHAT OT WAS DOING. SO MELINDA CALLS AND TELL ME TO PICK MY CAR UP AND IF O KEEP HAVING PROBLEMS RETURN IT. MY CAR IS STILL JERKING AND AT 38-42 IT CHANGES GEARS ROUGHLY. *TT

Chart Analysis

The blue line shows 43 total NHTSA complaints filed over 8 years, with the worst year being 2018 (11 complaints, including 1 crash report).

The amber reliability line averaged 96/100 across the vehicle's life — relatively stable, with the lowest point of 92/100 in 2018.

Notably, despite 43 complaints on file, no recall has been issued — either the defect pattern has not met NHTSA's threshold for a formal campaign, or a recall may be forthcoming.

Red dots on the amber line flag 2 years (2018, 2019) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.

Chrysler/Jeep ZF 9-Speed Transmission Extended Coverage
Transmission – ZF 9HP 9-Speed Automatic
COVERAGE:5 years / 100,000 miles extended on transmission components

The ZF 9HP 9-speed automatic transmission fitted to many FCA vehicles experiences harsh shifts, hunting between gears, shuddering, and occasional complete loss of drive engagement. FCA/Stellantis issued multiple software updates and a class action settlement that included extended warranty coverage on transmission hardware.

HOW TO CLAIM: Visit a Jeep, Chrysler, or Dodge dealer with your VIN. Request the latest TCM/PCM software calibration update (multiple TSBs issued). If the software update does not resolve the issue, request transmission replacement under the extended coverage. Reference class action settlement if applicable.

Chrysler 2.4L MultiAir Engine Oil Pressure Extended Coverage
Engine – 2.4L MultiAir (Tigershark) Oil Pressure System
COVERAGE:Varies — confirm with Stellantis dealer by VIN

2.4L Tigershark MultiAir four-cylinder engines develop oil pressure problems due to oil pressure switch failures and oil pickup tube issues, leading to low oil pressure warnings, engine ticking, and potential bearing damage. FCA issued technical service actions and special coverage programs.

HOW TO CLAIM: Visit a Jeep, Chrysler, or Dodge dealer. Request an oil pressure system inspection and verification of any open special coverage under your VIN. TSB 09-002-16 and related bulletins address oil pressure switch replacement.

Coverage eligibility depends on your VIN, original sale date, and current mileage. Always verify with an authorized dealer or manufacturer customer service — programs may have been updated since this database was compiled.
