Deferred Failure Risk
Components and defects approaching or past their known service milestones
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
On 4WD/AWD vehicles, neglected differential or transfer case fluid causes metal-on-metal wear. Replacement costs $1,500–$4,000.
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.
One failed component has created stress on connected systems. Repair costs compound quickly — a $500 fix can become $3,000+ if cascade damage is ignored.

NHTSA safety recall 25V-586 was issued on September 9, 2025. It has now been eight months without a resolution from the manufacturer, and per the FCA recall notice (accessed at [XXX] ) "The Fuel Delivery Module (FDM) on your vehicle may contain internal parts that can be affected by heat, which can reduce fuel flow and lead to a loss of drive power while driving. A loss of drive power can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning." This is a critical safety issue and the lengthy delay in providing a remedy puts lives at risk. I am writing to formally file a complaint regarding serious engine issues I have experienced with my Alfa Romeo vehicle. The ongoing mechanical problems have created significant inconvenience, financial hardship, and concerns regarding the safety and reliability of the vehicle. Since owning the vehicle, I have experienced persistent engine-related problems including [loss of power/engine stalling/check engine light/oil consumption/rough idling/etc.]. Despite attempts to address the issue through repairs and maintenance, the problem continues to occur. These recurring issues have negatively impacted my ability to reliably use the vehicle for daily transportation. In addition, I am concerned that these issues may reflect a manufacturing defect or unresolved mechanical problem that has not been properly corrected. I have made efforts to have the vehicle inspected and repaired, yet the condition persists, resulting in continued frustration and unexpected expenses. I respectfully request the following: * reimbursement for repair costs related to the engine issue * Documentation regarding any recalls, technical service bulletins, or known engine defects associated with this model * Assistance in resolving this matter promptly and fairly I would appreciate a written response outlining the next steps to resolve this complaint. I hope to settle this issue professionally without needing to escalate the matter further through consumer protection agencies, warranty enforcement, or legal channels. Please contact me at your earliest convenience regarding this matter.
I took the vehicle to Auto Zone for a basic diagnostic and it came back that the fuel pump is failing and defective. I only recently purchased the vehicle and found that there’s a recall on it for this reason. The yellow check engine light came on and it stalled while driving home.
Regarding a recall I was told the remedy would be available by now vin number Zasfaknn9j7b75385
I am reporting a safety issue with my 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio (VIN: [XXX] ). The vehicle has experienced repeated failures of critical lighting systems, including the headlights, brake lights, and turn signals, which have stopped working while driving. The issue began around 42,000 miles and occurred while the vehicle was covered under a Mopar Maximum Care warranty. There have been four repair attempts for the same issue. The problem was initially misdiagnosed as a headlight issue, but was later determined to involve the Body Control Module (BCM). I was also initially told this repair was not covered under warranty, which was later determined to be incorrect. Despite repairs, the issue has persisted. The vehicle also has an open recall with no available remedy. This creates a serious safety concern, as failure of headlights, brake lights, and turn signals increases the risk of an accident. I experienced an unexpected Loss of Motive Power (LOMP) event. Late afternoon traffic was fast, estimate 75-80 MPH. I attempted to change lanes get to the righthand shoulder and was very nearly involved in a high-speed collision with a semi-petroleum tank truck. He applied his brakes to avoid hitting me and started to jackknife, but regained control and continued. The truck missed by inches. At this point I had NO remaining power and was essentially coasting until I managed to cross the remaining two lanes of traffic to the shoulder emergency lane. I reset the error codes and continued home with no further occurrences. The incident produced the following warning lamps: Electronic Throttle Control Failure, Start/Stop System Failure and Check Engine, then a few seconds later the Limp Mode/LOMP event. I carry an OBD Scanning Tool with me to be able to clear the error codes when I encounter them. They are typically a cascading event that can result in LOMP. I have experienced a total of 26 of these error lamp events since 4/19/22 which have resulted in 3 LOMP's. The remaining 23 events I was able to reset before the inevitable LOMP. This is the first LOMP that nearly caused a fatal accident, the remainder I was able to safely find a place to stop to perform the resets. There is an active Manufacturer Recall Number93C, NHTSA Recall Number25V-586 that may cover this issue. The Recall Status is "Incomplete, remedy not yet available." The Alfa Romeo dealership has noted the P0191-00 error and replaced the fuel pressure sensor on 2/23/23, but this did not solve the problem. Owner's forums, and now the Manufacturer/NHTSA recall have reported this as a known problem, so I have been clearing my own error codes in order to at least have a car to drive. In my mind, this nuisance has now become a potentially very dangerous condition.

November 26th my car went into LOMP mode. But then restored itself. December 3rd my car went into LOMP mode again and had not recovered along with a slew of ALARMS. I have been using uber and rental cars since this issue. Highly likely this is a fuel pump issue but unable to determine as the authorized shop is 2hours away and the car will not make it there. I need a remedy I have been out of a car for months now and the recall has no remedy!

Subject: Safety Complaint – Open Recall with No Remedy Available I am filing a safety complaint regarding my vehicle, which currently has an open recall with no available remedy. Manufacturer Recall Number: 93C NHTSA Recall Number: 25V-586 VIN: [XXX] After learning about this recall, I have experienced the exact issues described. When the vehicle is exposed to very hot or very cold temperatures, the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) warning light illuminates, along with the check engine light and the auto stop-start warning light. When this occurs, the vehicle begins to sputter and loses power. It will not properly a-ccelerate and significantly reduces speed while driving. This creates a serious safety hazard, especially in traffic or at highway speeds. A sudden loss of power or inability to accelerate could easily result in a collision, potentially causing serious injury or death. There is currently no remedy available for this recall, yet the vehicle remains in operation on public roads. I do not feel the vehicle is safe to drive under these conditions. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this issue further and require the manufacturer to provide an immediate and effective remedy. Owners should not be placed in a position where they must operate an unsafe vehicle while waiting for a repair solution. Thank you for your attention to this matter. It's well known by Alfa Romeo/Chrystler, Stelvio owners and certified Alfa Romeo mechanics that the O-ring in the oil send/receive/turbo lines is faulty. Spewing oil into the engine compartment and engine components and accessories i.e., belts, brake components creating a major liability for Alfa Romeo. The smoke from burning oil is overwhelming and visible inside the cabin throughout the interior of this car. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD TO ALL ALFA ROMEO STELVIO OWNERS WITH THE 2018 MODEL.
I am submitting this complaint due to ongoing unresolved safety issues with my 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, VIN: ZASFAKAN6J7B95955. The vehicle has an open and unresolved safety recall under Recall Number 25V-586 / Manufacturer Recall 93C relating to the fuel delivery module (FDM), which poses a risk of engine shutdown and potential crash without warning. According to the notice, no remedy is currently available, yet I continue to experience serious electrical problems that align with the warning signs outlined. Specifically, my headlights have been flickering on and off while driving, creating hazardous conditions—this occurred again as recently as January 26, 2026. These issues are not isolated. I have evidence via Carfax history that the vehicle had documented electrical problems dating back to 2019. Despite notifying FCA (now Stellantis) and being offered a low-value settlement ($4,000), I formally rejected that offer due to the unresolved safety risks, recall status, and prior documented issues. A copy of the official recall letter from FCA US LLC and NHTSA status (marked “Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available”) are attached. At this time, I’m pursuing legal action under California’s Lemon Law and request that this complaint be recorded and escalated as this vehicle continues to pose a serious safety risk on public roads.
I am submitting this complaint regarding a manufacturer safety recall affecting my vehicle that has not been remedied and is creating a safety concern. My vehicle is subject to NHTSA Safety Recall 25V-586 (Alfa Romeo Recall 93C) involving a defective fuel pump / fuel delivery module that may cause loss of drive power while driving. I contacted an authorized Alfa Romeo dealership, and they confirmed that my vehicle is affected by this recall. However, the dealership informed me that Alfa Romeo has not yet released a final repair remedy and therefore they cannot perform the recall repair at this time. I contacted Alfa Romeo Customer Care and was advised that the dealership could run diagnostics and potentially perform a temporary or interim repair related to the fuel pump issue. When I relayed this information to the dealership, I was told that I would be required to pay out of pocket for parts and labor and wait for reimbursement once Alfa Romeo releases a final recall solution. I do not believe it is appropriate or compliant with safety recall requirements for a customer to be required to prepay for parts and labor related to a confirmed manufacturer safety defect. This recall involves a loss of engine power, which poses a safety risk while driving. At this time, no no-cost repair, interim fix, or alternative transportation has been offered, and I am being placed in a position where a known safety defect remains unresolved unless I pay out of pocket. I am requesting NHTSA review this matter, as the recall has been acknowledged but not properly supported with a no-cost remedy or alternative solution for the affected consumer.

My 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio experienced a complete electrical failure and will not start at all. The vehicle suddenly lost all functionality and remains fully inoperable. The dealership has had the vehicle for an extended period and has been unable to diagnose or repair the defect. This appears to be related to known electrical issues in 2018 Stelvio models, including BCM (Body Control Module) failures, wiring faults, and fuel system defects reported in recalls and TSBs. A no-start electrical failure is a serious safety concern because similar defects in this model have been linked to unexpected engine shut-offs. The vehicle has been out of service for over 30 days. This is a major safety and reliability issue. I am requesting that NHTSA review this defect, because the manufacturer has not provided a resolution.
The contact owns a 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving approximately 60-75 MPH, the vehicle shuddered and lost motive power. The driver was able to pull over to the side of the road. The check engine warning light and other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the residence. The contact stated that the vehicle was able to be restarted the following day, but the check engine warning light remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an Auto Parts Store, where it was scanned, and a DTC for low fuel volume was retrieved. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V586000( Fuel System, Gasoline), which the contact related to the failure; however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted and confirmed that the part was not yet available. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
I received a manufacturer recall notice (Recall 93C / NHTSA 25V-586) for my 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia concerning a defective rear fuel line quick connector that may leak fuel and cause an engine compartment fire. I contacted Alfa Romeo of Brandon (FL) several times to schedule an inspection and request a temporary vehicle as recommended by FCA. My service advisor, Lenny Patram, confirmed that the remedy is not yet available and advised me to wait for further notice. Despite expressing safety concerns, I was told that no loaner or temporary vehicle could be provided. This situation puts my safety and the safety of others at risk. The recall notice specifically warns that a fuel leak could lead to a fire, yet I have been advised to continue parking the vehicle outside and avoid driving it if possible. I rely on this vehicle for daily transportation and have not been offered any safe alternative or clear timeframe for repair. In addition to the recall, my check engine light has been on for several weeks, and the “A!” warning light appears intermittently. These indicators began appearing after I received the recall notice and may be related to the same underlying defect. The dealer has not inspected the vehicle because parts are unavailable. The issue has not been reviewed by the manufacturer, insurance, or any third party. The vehicle is currently at my residence and available for inspection upon request. Warning lights prior to failure: Yes — check engine light and “A!” warning. Reproduced/confirmed by dealer: No — recall acknowledged but not inspected. Component available for inspection: Yes.

I’m having fuel pump issues which it came to my knowledge there was a recall with no remedy
Battery has had repeated failures which have resulted in leaving driver stranded. Battery has been replaced 5 times since purchase in January 2021. Cause has yet to be determined.
The contact owns a 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The contact stated that while exiting a gated community at a slow speed, the vehicle started jerking while depressing the accelerator pedal. The battery warning light was displayed on the instrument panel when the vehicle lost all power. A tow truck driver attempted to jumpstart the vehicle, but the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where the battery was recharged; however, the failure returned within two hours after leaving the mechanic. The vehicle was towed to another independent mechanic, where the vehicle was diagnosed with a defective fuel pump. Upon investigation, the contact discovered that the vehicle was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V586000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, parts for the recall repair were unavailable. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure, and the contact was scheduled for an appointment for a diagnostic test. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but offered no assistance. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The low-pressure fuel pump (fuel delivery module) appears to be failing, consistent with Recall 25V-586 / Alfa Romeo Campaign 93C. This causes fuel starvation and loss of motive power. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The vehicle has experienced loss of motive power (LOMP) while driving. At times it jerks or hesitates when accelerating from a stop, and while climbing a hill it suddenly lost power, displayed a Service Electronic Throttle warning, and went into limp mode. This created a risk of being unable to accelerate safely in traffic, increasing the chance of being rear-ended or unable to merge. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. I described the symptoms to Alfa Romeo Service dept, and they told me it is related to the recall and that other customers have reported the same symptoms and warning lights. However, they advised that there is currently no remedy available, and I must wait for the fix before scheduling an appointment. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Not yet. Alfa Romeo advised that no remedy is available at this time, so the vehicle has not been formally inspected by the dealer or manufacturer. Advised not to drive long distances until fix determined. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes. Check Engine Light and Service Electronic Throttle came on as car lost power and entered limp mode with code P0299. Alfa Romeo Service Dept tech said these warnings match the recall. Rep said this shows how loss of motive power from fuel starvation manifests electronically & ECU interprets fuel starvation as underboost, which then triggers limp mode.
With temperatures around 90 degrees and engine is up to temperature the engine just stopped in the middle of the road blocking traffic This also happened 2 additional times and wouldn’t start for about 45 minutes. Recently paid $2,000 to replace the fuel pump and controller at a dealership. They told me there was no recall Had to wait 4 weeks for parts and didn’t know if they fixed the problem as there have not been any 90 degree days since the repair was done
2018 Stelvio Quad 7/2025 Taking off from a red light with multiple cars behind and beside me, my car lost power throwing multiple warning lights, swapped itself from "D" to "N" driving mode and had to be limped off the road and restarted. It would not swap modes from "N". Displayed "check engine light. Contacted my service manager, completed 10 restarts, issues cleared. Car would drive in all modes without issue. 2 weeks later having had no issues and assuming bad fuel, at the same light I was nearly rear ended because it did the same thing as before. There is a barrier to the left lane and I could not get my car out of the road. People were flying around, honking and yelling. After traffic cleared I was able to restart the vehicle. Called my service manager. 10 restarts cleared it and scheduled to bring it to Knoxville the next day. Obd reading indicated fuel starvation and delivery issues. The next day the dealership could not find an issue with the car. I took it home and drove it 2 more weeks without any issues until unfortunately, traveling about 70mph on the highway the lights came on again, same issue and lost power nearly causing an accident. Called the service manager. 10 restarts to clear it and drove it to the dealership about 100 miles away the next day using back roads to avoid the freeway. About 40 miles from the service center, it died while traveling about 30mph but thankfully, there were no other vehicles near me at that time and I was unfortunately prepared for the possibility. Once at the service center, it was determined that the fuel pump needed to be replaced and I paid significant money to have this part ordered and installed. I was without my car for about a week however this dealership does provide a loaner. I had the car back since mid August without any further issue - until last week, on start giving me the same dash warning lights, unable to swap from "N" mode. Called the service center and the coil pack was replaced yesterday.
Description of the Problem: While operating the vehicle, multiple warning lights illuminated including the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) warning light, the check engine light, and other unknown warning indicators. In addition, several warning messages were displayed, including “Service Engine Soon” and other unknown messages. When this occurs, the vehicle begins to overheat, the auto start/stop function becomes disabled, and the vehicle loses power and will not accelerate as expected. Component or System Failed / Malfunctioned: The exact component is unknown at this time. The failure appears to be related to the engine, powertrain, or electronic control systems. The vehicle and components are available for inspection upon request. Safety Risk: The vehicle’s failure to accelerate and overheating while in motion creates a serious safety hazard. This puts the driver and passengers at risk, especially if the loss of acceleration occurs in high-speed traffic, intersections, or on highways. Reproduction of the Problem: The issue has recurred multiple times. It has not yet been officially reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. Inspections: At this time, the vehicle has not been formally inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. Warning Lamps, Messages, and Symptoms Prior to Failure: The problem is preceded by the illumination of the ESC light, the check engine light, and other unknown warning lights. The messages “Service Engine Soon” and others appear immediately prior to or during the failure. These warnings occur before the loss of acceleration and overheating. Additional Notes: The failures are ongoing and have occurred more than once, raising concerns about reliability and safety.
The contact owns a 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The contact stated that the instrument cluster was inoperable. The vehicle was taken to an unknown local dealer, and it was confirmed that there was no warranty coverage on the vehicle for the failure. The dealer informed the contact about a seat belt recall that was completed, but the initial failure was not repaired. The contact stated that after refueling, the fuel light illuminated two days later. The contact stated that the vehicle also stalled while driving. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 44,000.
I own a 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio (VIN: [XXX] ) with approximately 102,000 miles. The vehicle recently experienced an electrical issue caused by a failed ground strap — a known problem in these vehicles that is widely reported by other owners. After the vehicle became inoperable, I observed smoke and visible signs of burned or heat-damaged wiring in multiple areas under the hood, including ground wires not located near the main strap and crumbling insulation on the ABS wiring in the front wheel wells. The vehicle was towed to an authorized Alfa Romeo dealership, where the ground strap was replaced. However, the dealer did not inspect or document the other visibly damaged wiring, despite my specific request and description of the safety issue. They claimed the vehicle showed no error codes and was safe to drive. My concern is that the failed ground strap caused additional electrical damage to safety-critical components like the ABS system, which may result in electrical fire, loss of braking, or other failures. Alfa Romeo appears to have updated the design of the replacement ground strap (now rubber-insulated), which suggests they are aware of the issue, but they have not issued a recall or TSB. I am filing this report to document the issue and request that NHTSA investigate. I believe this is a systemic problem that affects vehicle safety, and that Alfa Romeo and its dealerships are failing to address it adequately. I had my radiator fail, lost all fluid and had to be towed. The car has 73,000 miles on it, is well maintained and garage kept. Alfa has sent the dealerships a Service Bulletin item about the issue, but never contacted the consumers about fixing it proactively. My son broke down on a highway, was able to limp the vehicle to a parking lot where the car had to be towed. The repair was done by Alfa and cost almost $3,000 No issues showed up prior. Once the fail happened the car was
The car never showed signs of an issue, I got on the car with my two children, when I attempted to start the car. The engine started smoking and smelled like burned plastic. We got out of the car, the smoke went on for about 15-30 seconds. After that the car did not start. The engine's wiring was charred. I was informed by the dealer a ground strap failed. This ground strap is exposed to the elements at the bottom of the engine and it's prone to corrode, rendering it useless and causing the electrical wiring to overheat and potentially start a fire.
Similar to Investigation PE24000, my 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio fuel pump failed during low speed driving in a parking garage. The car was rendered inoperable and would not restart. The engine failed while driving and only due to my low speed and lack of traffic at that moment, I was able to maneuver the car safely to a stop. The dealership identified the issue as relating to the fuel pump, vey similar to the Low Pressure Fuel Pump Assembly Failure investigation PE24000 run by investigator Arnaldo Torres Diaz. Just wanted to provide the information to encourage Fiat Chrysler to expand this repair into a recall for Alfa Stelvio models that also share the Alfa Giulia 2.0 liter four cylinder engine.
My 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio was diagnosed by a certified Alfa Romeo dealer with a major engine defect involving coolant mixing with oil. The diagnosis revealed internal failure likely stemming from the oil cooler or head gasket, and the parts estimate alone was over $17,000 — not including labor. The dealer confirmed the issue but stated no recalls apply and denied warranty coverage. The car showed early signs like minor overheating and coolant loss, but no clear warning lamps or check engine lights until the issue escalated. This defect significantly increases the risk of engine failure, overheating, or loss of power while driving — posing a serious safety concern. I have since discovered multiple other owners reporting the exact same problem in Alfa Romeo forums and consumer complaint sites. The dealer has confirmed the issue but refused support. I believe this may reflect a broader design flaw affecting many vehicles and should be investigated for potential recall.
The contact owns a 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The message "Electronic Acceleration Control Disabled" was displayed. The contact pulled over and waited a while before restarting the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the low-pressure fuel pump had failed. The contact was informed that the low-pressure fuel pump and module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired and remained with the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 13,500.
Car wouldn’t start, was able to jump start and take to dealer. Front ground straps at both steering knuckles have been shorted and melted leaving exposed wires. New headlamp to dash harness is needed due to complete short. This has caused electrical issues causing ABS/Power steering/auto stop lights to randomly come on and off. Unable to drive in case car stops operating while driving due to shortage. Alfa Romeo dealer has confirmed this issue. Lights did not appear until after this occurred. After researching online this appears to be a common issue reported among people owning this 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio due to the harness/straps/wiring melting and corroding due to design flaw. Quoted $6,450 for total repair.
Ground wire to starter had corroded and broke into. Wife tried to start the vehicle and saw smoke coming up out of the hood. This caused the main wiring harness to burn and wires to fall apart. The wires run from the front wheels up into the engine bay and throughout vehicle. The vehicle could have caught fire or could have possibly caused the brakes to fail while driving. I contacted Alfa Cares but they would not help cover cost (estimated approximately $9,000). This is not only a safety issue but a non maintenance for the customer issue. This isn’t a scheduled maintenance and is a product failure by the manufacturer. This issue should be a recall for both issues. This also caused all warning lights to come on the dash including steering, ABS, and about four other warning lights. Please consider this issue as a recall as Alfa doesn’t seem to care enough to take care of it and before someone gets hurt. The issue has been noted by an independent repair shop as well as an Alfa Romeo certified mechanic.
ABS module doesn’t work and only 2 wheels out of 4 have brakes. The car has only 55,000 miles! All 2019-2021 Alfa Romeo Stelvios have open recalls about ABS module, but mine is 2018, although the installed ABS is manufactured 2018-2023 (what includes 2019-2021 that have Recalls!). I was driving and almost killed a man who was running across the road because my brakes didn't work!!! I can't drive a car without brakes and feel safe! The problem was indicated by few independent service centers. Alfa Romeo dealer knows about this COMMON issue but doesn’t want to take responsibility for it! I’ve got warning lamps right after my brakes were broken. Not even before! The car was fully serviced on time in the dealership! BRAKE, ESC, AST, P! Also can get an invoice from the repair center if needed!
At a red light in a busy city, my car auto-stopped the engine. When trying to auto-start as the light turned green, the car started smoking and wouldn't move. When towed away and taken to the dealership, they said that the ground strap of the vehicle had corroded, shorted out, and melted a number of wires within the wiring harness. It is available for inspection upon request. This easily could have been a full electrical fire within the car, putting us in further mortal danger had we not shut the car off immediately. We also were in a highly congested area, and could have been hit while jumping out of the car for fear of smoke/fire. We could have been rear ended by traffic behind us as well. The dealership said that this is a common problem that I did not cause nor could have anticipated or prevented. I did my own research and have found many accounts of this exact same issue happening with this make and model of the car (2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio). There are accounts online that Alfa Romeo has since switched out the part in later makes of the car for one that is more protected and not prone to corrosion - it is clear that they know and have quietly acknowledged the issue. This is a common and reproducible problem. The car has only been inspected by the mechanics at a local repair shop and then at an Alfa Romeo dealership. The insurance representatives said that because this is a mechanical failure, it is not covered by insurance and therefore they have no need to inspect it. There were no symptoms prior to the failure of the ground strap and melting of the wires within the wiring harness. The car was functioning as normal up until this incident. It was well taken care of with regular maintenance and only had 48,000 miles on the odometer. It had never had any prior issues, mechanical or otherwise.
Sept. 9, 2024 - called local dealer to schedule repair. Parts were not yet available. Placed on a list for them to call when the parts were available. October 15, 2024 - called dealer again. No parts have been received. ETA unknown. Confirmed I was still on the list.
The engine has shut down in traffic on the following occasions: 1) July 2023 in The Woodlands, Texas. 2) Later that same day on [XXX] in Plantersville, Texas. 3) In August 2024, on [XXX] and 4) on [XXX] . My vehicle is available to the NHTSA upon request. On each occasion, except one, I was fortunate to be in the right hand lane and was able to pull over onto the shoulder before any could hit me. On [XXX] , near Richards, there was no shoulder and I was stopped within the single lane of westbound traffic. I was fortunate that traffic was light at that time and that it was daylight. After the first two incidents in 2023, I took it to Northside Imports in Spring, Texas (XXX) They were unable to duplicate the problem or determine what was the cause. On [XXX], I took the car back to Northside Imports and they determined that it needed a new fuel pump, seal and control module. (I was informed on Friday, [XXX] that the parts have been received and can be installed on [XXX].) Between the time that the fault was identified and the time the parts were available the car has failed on the highway twice, once on [XXX] and once on [XXX] . The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone but Northside Imports in Spring, Texas. There were no warnings in advance of the shutdown. I was able to restart the vehicle after a short period of time after disconnecting the battery. Each time, it restarted in "limp" mode. I went to start my car to head to work and the car did not start so i tried to start it again all of a sudden smoke started billowing out from the engine bay. it scared me bad i thought the car was going to catch on fire. I proceeded to have the car towed to the dealer where i was told that a ground strap on the transmission has failed causing the wiring in the engine bay ti burn up. I'm still waiting on a estimate of how much it will cost to repair the vehicle. i believe this is also a safety issue the car could have easily caught fire or died at a stop light causing a crash or road hazard.
We use our vehicle not only for our business but also share it on the Turo platform for rentals. Because of this recall our vehicle as been unlisted until the recall is fixed. It has now been over a month and we have received no solution to the safety recall issue. It’s not only costing us peace of mind as we need to continue using the vehicle ourselves but it’s also costing us money as we havnt been able to rent out the vehicle due to the safety recall not being addressed . We find this delay to be unacceptable

I was in the process of merging on the the express way when my vehicle threw a warning light, "service electronic throttle control" along with a "service engine" message and a check engine light. The vehicle went into a "limp" and had extremely poor acceleration, I was almost rear ended because the vehicle couldn't reach highways speeds fast enough. The vehicle has not yet been inspected my the manufacturer but I did some research on this issue and found it to be alarmingly common. There seems to be no clear answer to the reason for this and no sure repairs for the problem. This poses a safety risk to drivers as this problem seems to happen while accelerating. It can be dangerous if someone on the expressway is attempting to merge into 60mph traffic and hit "limp mode" at roughly 30. I believe an investigation need to be conducted regarding this followed by a recall of the affected part.
I have had a sudden loss of coolant causing the engine to overheat. I have never had a leaking issue. But after research I’ve learned this is a common problem with this vehicle. My vehicle began to lose power causing the car to lose acceleration in traffic causing other vehicles to suddenly avoid hitting me and others. The problem has been confirmed.
Control throttle light resulting vehicle to go into a limp mode and power reduction.
Service electronic throttle control keeps going off and car goes into Lino mode and cannot go over a certain speed causing me to not be able to drive it
I have had several incidents with my Alfa Romero Stelvio losing power while driving, This problem has been going on for quite some time, i have had several parts changed out with the same results a few weeks or months later. I took the vehicle to Jim Ellis Alfa Romero for repairs and told them the vehicle was losing power while driving and was told that this problem has occurred on several Stelvios. I left my car with Jim Ellis and a few days later I was told all was good. I didn’t even get a mile away before I loss power again. I brought it back to Jim Ellis and left it again and a few hours later they called and said that the Stelvio needed a new turbocharger that would be $4000 plus installation fees. How is this possible if you told me you had taken care of the issue, and the car didn't even make it a mile.
The contact owns a 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The contact stated the vehicle lost functionality with the radio and the phone control. The contact stated that the front wipers became inoperable. The START/STOP function was also inoperable. The contact also stated that the heating and air condition controls and the backup camera were inoperable. The contact became aware that water was pooling inside the bottom of the liftgate while opened. The Auto START/STOP indicator light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where a diagnostic test was performed. The contact was informed that the backup camera connections and the electrical wiring harnesses were corroded. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V203000 (Structure) as a possible solution; however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 37,293.
Please see the following reoccurring problems with the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Auto on/off failure has failed 3 times resulting in the check engine light coming on and the vehicle citing service engine. Additionally, the DNA selector doesn’t work when this occurs. The vehicle has been inspected by Southern Alfa Romeo of Norfolk. However, the system reset itself before they inspected. As such they found no evidence of failure. However, within a week the system is back in fault mode rendering the vehicle unsafe to drive. I’ve noticed on several blogs that others owners are having the same problems with no relief from their service provider. Request a NHTSA review of this problem with a solution for correction. Thank you!!!
In December of 2023, the Ground cable/front body harness was melted due to the main battery ground cable from the transmission to the body being corroded and broken. This could have potentially caused car to catch fire. There was no warning light, the car simply refused to start and I could smell something burn. The car is barely 5 years old and driven for 50k miles. The car was last serviced in September/October of 2023 (where this strap issue was not identified, since this is something that is not serviced or expected to break) and has been in no accidents. I strongly believe that this is a faulty piece that alfa Romeo stelvios of that year have. I have heard of atleast 2 other stelvios with the same issue (after a simple google search on forums), however have really never experienced this issue in any other cars I have owned or known off- specially within the first 4-5 years. When I contacted Alfa, I was told that I am out of warranty, so they cannot help me. However, I wanted to raise this safety concern with them and requested if I could talk to anyone else and that request was denied. I am not reporting this because of I want reimbursement of the cost, but primarily so Alfa can investigate and perform a recall as a corrective action.
While I was driving the car suddenly stopped sending gas when pressing the gas pedal and put the can a neutral mode. This was the second time this happened. Luckily the first time I was in my neighborhood going slow. The second time was in the middle of the night pitch black on a busy road. I was stranding the middle of the road and almost got hit. I was so fortunate a cop was driving by an helped. This has been extremely unsettling as I have a 1 year old. Luckily he was in the car but I can’t imagine if I was driving with him on a highway. The first time this happened I went to the gas station to fill a gas station to fill up a gas tank and added it my car. The car said I had a quarter tank when it stalled, but when I added the gas I was nearly empty. I was able to drive it to Alfa and they said I didn’t need a need a new fuel pump but don’t run it under 1/4 tank. I bought the car with 30k miles and apparently the fuel pump was already replaced under warranty. The second time this happened was in Dec 2023 and my car won’t get looked at until Jan 30th, 2024. I read up and there are other complaints of the same issue. This has to be corrected or someone will secretly injured. I’m scared to drive the car and will ultimately sell it because it is NOT safe.
Was driving home with my fourteen year old daughter and started to smell a burning smell and began to lose power in the vehicle. Warning light came on that oil level was low. Pulled over as safely as I could on a busy four lane road and opened the hood and saw engine oil and coolant mixed and sprayed all over the engine. Car had never leaked any type of fluids prior to this incident. Had the car towed to one repair shop and was told it would need a new engine. Had it towed to an Alfa Romeo dealer two hours away and was told it needed a new engine too. Initial quote from dealer for a new engine and labor was $22,000. This car is barely worth $20,000. Third party warranty (I bought car used from a dealer) will only pay for gaskets. After weeks of warranty company asking for tear downs of engine and other things, price has risen to $35,000! While reasearching engine malfunctions on Alfa Romeo Stelvios, I have come across many people with similar sitations as mine. Engine replacements at 30,000, 40,000, 50,000 miles. My car has 39,000 miles. This should never happen to car with such low mileage. Called Alfa Romeo customer care and was told that previous owner was not compliant with maintenance and warranty was voided. How do they know that for sure? Just because you don't get your vehicle serviced at the dealership, your noncompliant? I believe that this needs to be looked at from a safety perspective that Alfa Romeo is not doing. During loss of power on busy road and only being able to go 10 mph, we could have easily been rear ended. This total abuse of negligence from Alfa Romeo to recall these engines and fix them, to the warranty company not paying for the engine replacement/repairs, and to the dealer that is charging this extreme amount of money for this. Car insurance will not pay for this as this is mechanical and was not involved in a collision.
When attempting to start the car using the push-button on the steering wheel, the engine did not crank and several system alerts were visible on the display (no warnings prior to this). Smoke began billowing from under the hood and left-front wheel arch after a few seconds. It was towed to the shop, the problem reproduced, and found to have a corroded main grounding wire going from the transmission to the frame. It is clear that the ground wire, which is not insulated or covered in any way, was not sufficiently grounding the electrical systems. Thus, the path of least resistance was the smaller gauge wiring in the electrical harness to include the ABS and starting/charging circuits which melted under the higher load. The extent of the damage is still being evaluated at the repair facility. This defect in the electrical circuitry could, at worst, have caused a fire, but thankfully just left us stranded. It is believed this problem could occur even while driving creating a serious condition and potential for an accident or injury.
Driving on highway lost full power of engine. Throttle body control message came on . Then steering wheel started to stiffen up . Terrible experience and scary lucky was able to gain control on vehicle and pullover . Reading reviews after getting this vehicle 2 years later that it’s common in most car of this make and very unsafe . Dealer doesn’t help and warranty is crap leaving you going to the dealer several times spending dollars on the same safety issue .
Engine blew at a bit over 40000 miles. There were regular oil changes and service done. The car of this quality and price should never have the engine blown at this amount of miles. It happened right after oil change and inspection, which confirmed everything was fine with the vehicle.
Vehicle stalled loss power on highway while driving 70mph almost got rear ended. Was able to exit highway and park vehicle. Shut it off for 10 minutes started back up put in reverse car would move at all put it in drive still wouldn’t move. This is very dangerous I couldn’t have been killed. Check engine light came on and stayed on. Stop/Start stated unavailable and service engine soon
The car will shut off in traffic out of no where. While driving the cars speed randomly will decrease to 15 miles and hour on the interstate almost causing a crash. When the cars speeds decreases randomly it does not all you to accelerate. Therefore the car is just going 15 miles an hour on a highway of no less than 65 miles. This has happened multiple times in the last 2 months. I see there was a recall of the same vehicles for the same issue a few years ago but this vehicle wasn’t listed yet it is experiencing the same issues. Have spent countless dollars and the problem is still not fixed
My car has had numerous issues/errors and drivabilty concerns over the last 3 years with the automatic torque vectoring (ATV) system. The vehicle has unstable/unusual driving when the system is malfunctioning and the system does not store any error codes when the car is turned off. The vehicle has been to 2 different dealers more than 6 times and they are unable to find the root cause. I have to drive straight to a dealer to have the codes read as soon as there is a malfunction because it all gets erased when the car is shut off. This is a safety issue that the manufacturer cannot figure out how to fix on my car.
Sunroof Exploding, I was driving down a smooth California freeway at about 70mph..It was about 72 degrees out, I had my A/C at about 65 degrees, Sunroof closed, along with all windows & all of a sudden, my Sunroof exploded..I had glass coming down on me & flying around cabin..I had a few small cuts, luckily I had big full sunglasses on, as 3 days before I had eye surgery..My car does not have a scratch on it as it is in mint condition, 39,700 miles on it..Nothing had fallen on sunroof, had not gone under overpass & something dropped! I know how a flying rock will travel, it follows the airflow..Look at the top of any car & you will find no chips or scratches from a rock..Yes, the front of your car or maybe a glancing chip on a windshield, but not on top of car! I have looked up on internet & have seen a good number of same problems with with Alfa Romeo & other brands.. I took my Alfa to my dealer who always services my car & they said, to bad, out of Warranty..It is your problem! Alfa Romeo says my car is 4 months outside warranty & will not cover the cost of the EXPLODED Sunroof Glass.. When is a Sunroof glass Exploding a warranty item? This is a design flaw / problem & EXTREAMLY dangerous when it explodes with no warning.. Talking to Larry Dominique, Senior Vice President of Alfa Romeo, they all say, never heard of this problem, when of course they DO!!! Alfa Romeo Not wanting to take care of my problem & saying they have never heard of it happening before & that it is out of Warranty is a VERY Dangerous Joke!! I am writing to you / NHTSA to get a response & this NEEDS to be investigated immediately!! you / NHTSA has been notified as of today April 13, 2023 at 2pm PT...My car can be inspected at anytime & pictures available. I want & deserve a response about my issue ASAP!
The contact owns a 2018 Alfa Romero. The contact stated that the vehicle was serviced and repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V205000. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph, the windshield wipers engaged without being activated, and there were unknown safety warning lights flashing on the dash, and the automatic starter was not working. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where the body control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and stated that there is a two-year warranty on the repair. The manufacturer provided no further assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 54,500.
Body control module While driving in rain, received multiple incorrect messages on dash screen, horn began to beep. Unable to turn horn off until parking and disconnecting the negative battery cable. Had body control module replaced. Two weeks later, driving in rain: multiple warning lights appeared. Monitor said passenger and driver doors were open-they were not. Gas gauge became 'unavailable,' displaying only empty tank. Lights flickered on and off in cabin. Dealer said this was never a recall issue. Alfa says it was but the recall 'expired, so not eligible to fix' This is recall number U36. Obviously still a problem.
Water discharge on the passenger side whenever the AC is switched on and the car is driving. The water leak led to electrical malfunction with electrical lights switching on even when the car is switched off or the lights switching off when the car is in motion. The water on the passenger side was a nuisance for a long time but when the electrical system went haywire, it became a safety risk especially during night driving when the lights may switch off abruptly. The water leak incident was first reported to the dealership on March 6th, 2021. We did not drive the car around much in the year due to covid. We subsequently reported the problem to dealership in March and May of 2022 (start of the summer months). The water leak continued to happen and we ignored it for a while until Aug 6th 2022 when we took a long trip and the passenger side was completely soaked. The electrical malfunction started happening sometime after. Eventually, on Sept 6th 2022, the car battery died as the lights were running throughout the night. The water leak incident has been looked by dealership and they did found dampness on the passenger side but could not recreate the issue. The car has been with dealership since Sept 7th 2022 for them to check for electrical and water leak issue. The videos of the incidents could be found here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/plin71ez82sflh3/AADR4qOJ744_dtoInw0y108Ha?dl=0
During the recent rainfall the front passenger side suffered a massive water leak, causing that side of the cabin to flood possibly causing water damage as well. This happened while the car was stationary and also while in motion. This also cause electrical failure to multiple components of the car including the infotainment system, headlights, indicators, engine stop/go among others.
I orchard my car used, but still under warranty. Within a week it has shut down with a service engine error. I was told it was the power control module (PCM) both times. There's no logical reason, I know of for a car with only 40K miles on it to have an engine failure such as the PCM. Both times both dealerships stated that the game was coming from the solenoids and having a misfire caused by the PCM.
THE FUEL GAUGE INSIDE THE CAR SHOWS WRONG READINGS AND YOU CAN RUN OUT OF FUEL
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 ALFA ROMEO STELVIO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT OCCASIONALLY THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOSS MOTIVE POWER AND FAILED TO ACCELERATE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY HOWEVER, THE FAILURE MOSTLY OCCURRED WHILE STARTING THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE LEARNED OF A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE DIRECT INJECTION WITHIN THE ENGINE. THE CONTACT CONTACTED FULLERTON ALFA ROMEO (1034 US-22, SOMERVILLE, NJ 08876, (877)463-1821) WHO STATED THAT THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AND CLEARED SOME UNKNOWN DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES. THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND OPENED A CASE. THE MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDED THAT A COMPLAINT BE FILED WITH NHTSA. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000.
ALFA ROMEO USA IS IN MY OPINION HIDING A CONSTANT PROBLEM THEY HAVE WITH STELVIOS. THE OIL TURBO LINE HAS A FAULTY ORING AND LEAKS OIL ONTO ENGINE WHICH CAUSES SMOKE THAT CAN NOT BE HEALTHY TO BREATHE IN. I HAVE TALKED TO SEVERA ALFA DEALERS IN SERVICE DEPTS AND THEY CONFIRM TO ME THAT THEY HAVE FIXED NUMEROUS STELVIOS WITH THIS PROBLEM. THIS SHOULD BE A NATIONAL RECALL FOR REPAIR AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER. I TUSUALLY HAPPENS CLOSE TO WARRANTIES EXPIRATION NEAR 50K MILES OR SHORTLY AFTER.
THERE WAS A ISSUE WITH MY VEHICLE TURNING ON FINE THEN ONCE I GOT DOWN THE ROAD IT STARTED TO NOT GO IT COMPLETELY STOPPED IN MID DRIVE ON ME AND THE ENGINE LIGHT AND OIL LIGHT GOING CRAZY. IT STARTED SOUNDING BAD THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES IT SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENING ON A 2018 THAT'S BEEN UP TO DATE ON MAINTENANCE. I TAKE THE CARE HOME PARK IT FOR A DAY THEN NEVER DAY CRANK IT UP IT CRANKS RIGHT UP AS IF IT DID NOTHING THE DAY BEFORE SOUNDS NORMAL RUNS FINE NO LIGHTS ON AT ALL BUT IT DID THIS 3 TIMES IN 3 MONTHS. SOMETHING IS DEFINITELY MALFUNCTIONING. I ALSO GOT IN A ALFA ROMEO GROUP AND 75 PERCENT OF THE PEOPLE HAS HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR VEHICLE RATHER IT BE THE CAR OR SUV OR YEAR THEY ALL HAD THE SAME ENGINE TYPE.
WHILE ON A HIWAY, WITH CRUSE ON, STOPPED FOR A RED LIGHT. WHILE STOPPED THE ENGINE SHUT OFF. I PUSHED THE STOP-START DISABLE BUTTION. THE CAR ACCLERATED INTO THE INTERSACTION BEFORE I BRAKED IT TO A STOP. LUCKELY THERE WAS NO ONE INFRONT OF ME AND NO CROSS TRAFFIC OR WE WOULD HAVE WRECKED. THE CAR THEN WENT BACK TO IDLE AND HAS BEEN FINE SINCE.
THE CAR WON'T GET UP TO SPEED LIKE IT POST TO. IT TAKES FOREVER FOR THE CAR TO GET UP TO 30MPHS. THEY SAY IT'S A OIL SENSOR PROBLEM.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 ALFA ROMEO STELVIO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN TO THE DEALER FIVE TIMES SINCE IT WAS PURCHASED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE OVER 40 MPH AND FREQUENTLY WENT INTO LIMP MODE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL AND CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE FULLERTON ALFA ROMEO DEALER LOCATED AT 1034 US-22, SOMERVILLE, NJ 08876, WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TURBO CHARGER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE PART WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED TO RETURN THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER. THE CONTACT WAS NOT SATISFIED AND REQUESTED A TRADE, WHICH THE MANUFACTURER REJECTED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 30,500.
DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, AROUND 65 - 70 MPH MY PANORAMIC SUNROOF EXPLODED.
21,000 MILES MAY 2 2020 WHILE EXITING MY NEIGHBORHOOD, ELECTRONICS FAILED AGAIN AND THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE ANYMORE; I WAS STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF A HEAVILY TRAFFICKED US HIGHWAY, WITH THE RISK TO BE HIT BY OTHER CARS. THE CAR WENT INTO THE NORMAL DRIVE MODE AND I WAS NOT ABLE TO SWITCH TO ECONOMIC OR DYNAMIC DRIVING MODE ANYMORE, CAR WOULD NOT RUN OVER 40MPH. ALL KIND OF WARNINGS STARTED SHOWING UP ON THE DASHBOARD. I HAD TO STOP/START THE CAR A FEW TIMES, AND IT RESUMED FUNCTIONING. CURRENT MAJOR FAILURE-30/05/2020, CANNOT SAY THE CAR MILEAGE BECAUSE THE DASHBOARD SCREEN TOTALLY BLACKED OUT, 2020. ALL CUSTOMIZED CONTROLS SETTINGS WENT BACK ON FACTORY SETTINGS AND THE CENTER DASHBOARD ON THE DRIVER SIDE IS COMPLETELY BLACKED OUT. CAR IS BLOCKED IN NORMAL DRIVING MODE WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY TO SWITCH TO DYNAMIC OR ECONOMIC MODE. ESC WARNING IS ACTIVATED ON THE DASHBOARD. *TR
THIS CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT MORE THAN 8 TIMES WITH CRACKED RADIATOR, ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS AND RECALLS. IT HAS COME TO A DEAD STOP ON MAJOR HIGHWAY AND ALMOST KILLED US
WITH ONLY 11,000 MILES THE VEHICLE HAS RECEIVED FOUR MAJOR REPAIRS, TWO INCIDENTS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. 1. BLIND SPOT MONITORING SYSTEM; ONE DAY IN REPAIR SHOP 2. NO RADIO OR NAVIGATION SYSTEM; ONE DAY IN REPAIR SHOP 3. SEIZING-UP OR LOCKING OFF RIGHT-REAR BRAKE PAD THAT GRINDER INTO BRAKE ROTOR. THIS MADE STEERING DIFFICULT. VEHICLE WAS IN REPAIR SHOP FOR ONE WEEK. 4. MALFUNCTION OF START & STOP SYSTEM, AND ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL WHILE DRIVING IN RUSH HOUR INTERSTATE TRAFFIC; NEARLY DISABLING VEHICLE INTRAFFIC. SPEED LIMITED WAS REDUCED TO 25MPH IN A 65MPH HIGHWAY. CAR WAS DISABLED FOR A FEW HOURS BUT ERRORS MYSTERIOUSLY WENT AWAY. DURING THIS EVENT WE DISCOVERED THE ALFA ROMEO IN OUR RESIDENCE CLOSED WITH NO NOTIFICATION. IF VEHICLE REMAINED DISABLED THE NEXT OPTION WILL BE TOO TOW THE VEHICLE TO OMAHA, NE.
ON MAY 9, 2018, THE VEHICLE UNDERWENT THE RECALL #U36/NHTSA18V-205 TO SEAL THE POTENTIAL WATER INTRUSION THAT WOULD AFFECT THE BODY CONTROL MODULE. HOWEVER, ON DECEMBER 16, 2019, A NOTICEABLE AMOUNT OF WATER WAS LOCATED ON THE PASSENGER FLOOR BOARD AND AFTER DRIVING FOR 20 MINUTES ON THE FREEWAY AT 65 MPH, WE EXPERIENCED WHAT WE FOUND OUT TO BE LATER WATER INTRUSION THAT AFFECTED THE BODY CONTROL MODULE. AS RECALL #U36 DESCRIBES WE EXPERIENCED THE FOLLOWING ISSUES: 1) THE TURN SIGNALS SPONTANEOUSLY ENGAGED AS WELL AS DID NOT ENGAGE WHEN REQUESTED, 2) THE FAN DID NOT OPERATE, 3) THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT AND REAR DOORS WOULD LOCK/UNLOCK RANDOMLY, 4) A WARNING SYMBOL DISPLAYING ON THE DASH INDICATING THAT THE PROXIMITY SENSORS ARE NOT FUNCTIONING, 5) A WARNING SYMBOL DISPLAYING ON THE DASH INDICATING THAT THE PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT ENGAGING WHILE DRIVING WITHOUT PROMPT FROM THE DRIVER, 6) THE HEADLIGHTS WERE RAPIDLY ALTERNATING FROM HIGH BEAMS TO LOW BEAMS, 7) COMPLETE LOSS OF HEADLIGHT FUNCTION DURING HOURS OF DARKNESS. BASED OFF OF THE AFOREMENTIONED INCIDENT, IT APPEARS THAT EITHER: 1) THE RECALL WAS NEVER PERFORMED ON MAY 9, 2018 AS INDICATED ON THE SCANNED INVOICES OR 2) THE RECALL THAT WAS PERFORMED ON MAY 9, 2018 WAS NOT PROPERLY COMPLETED. ON JANUARY 3, 2020, THE DEALERSHIP CONSIDERED THE VEHICLE FIXED BY ONLY REPLACING THE BCM. THE DEALERSHIP FAILED TO IDENTIFY THE LOCATION OF WHERE THE WATER ENTERED THE VEHICLE CABIN. THEREFORE, THEY FAILED TO FIX THE UNDERLYING PROBLEM THAT CAUSED THE DAMAGE TO THE BCM AND FUTURE DAMAGE CAN BE EXPECTED TO OCCUR FROM WATER ENTERING THE VEHICLE CABIN.
ALPHA ROMERO WHEN DRIVING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, ACCELERATING AND BRAKING OCCUR TOGETHER AND OFTEN, THE ENGINE WILL CUT OFF AND ALL SYSTEMS BECOME INOPERABLE. STOP/START SYSTEM FAILURE SYMBOL APPEARS ON SCREEN. THIS WILL OCCUR WHEN STOP/START SYSTEM DESPITE HAVING DISENGAGED BY PRESSING BUTTON ON DASHBOARD. IT TAKES SEVERAL SECONDS FOR THE ENGINE TO COME BACK ON. DURING THIS INTERVAL, THE CAR CAN NOT BE CONTROLLED. CAR IS MOVING BUT CAN;T BE CONTROLLED BY DRIVER. ALPHA ROMEO CUSTOMER CENTER IS AWARE OF PROBLEM BUT SAYS THERE IS NO FIX AVAILABLE AT THIS ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE KNOWN ABOUT IT FOR SOME TIME. IN MY OPINION IS THIS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND AN IMMEDIATE RECALL IS NEEDED TO PREVENT SERIOUS INJURY/DAMAGE. RECALL IS NECESSARY TO FIT THIS PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY. THIS HAS HAPPENED MORE THAN ONCE.
THERE'S A PROBLEM CALLED ETC ERROR. IT HAS HAPPENED 5 TIMES SINCE 9500 MILEAGE. AND NOW CAR HAS 15900 MILEAGE. EVERY TIME IT HAPPENED WHEN I WAS ON HIGHWAY TRYING TO ACCELARATE. WHEN THAT PROBLEM OCCURED, I SUDDENLY LOST POWER AND HAD TO PULL OVER IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. THEN I NEEDED TO SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE AND RESTARTED, AFTER THIS ACTION POWER WAS BACK ON WITH ENGINE CHECK LIGHT ON, TOO. AND CAR WAS DRIVEABLE WITH AUTO START/STOP AND REMOTE START UNAVAILABLE. I WENT TO DEALSHIPS 3 TIMES. FIRST DEALSHIP CAN'T NOT LOCATE THE PROBLEM AND JUST RESET COMPUTER. SECOND DEALSHIP FOUND ONE PROBLEM AND REPLACED A PART. BUT AFTER A COUPLE THOUSANDS OF MILES, THE PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN. I HAVE TWO VIDEOS, BUT THEY ARE TOO BIG TO UPLOAD.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 ALFA ROMEO STELVIO. THE CONTACT SATED THAT THE FORWARD COLLISION DETECTION SYSTEM FAILED. WHILE DRIVING OVER A BRIDGE, THE AUTOMATIC BRAKING SYSTEM ENGAGED INDEPENDENTLY WITH NO HAZARD AHEAD. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL DETECTION SYSTEM ACTIVATED INCORRECTLY. THE SYSTEM DETECTED A VEHICLE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AND ENGAGED THE BRAKING SYSTEM AS IF THE VEHICLE WERE IN FRONT OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURES OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THOMPSON MASERATI ALFA ROMEO (303 SWAMP ROAD, DOYLES TOWN, PA 18901, (215)348-0056) TO BE DIAGNOSED, BUT NO ERROR CODES COULD BE FOUND. THE DEALER REALIGNED THE SENSORS, BUT THE FAILURE WAS NOT CORRECTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,500.
I WAS DRIVING SOUTH BOUND ON THE 605 IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME BROKE AND AS I ENGAGED IN THE BRAKE IT BECAME UNRESPONSIVE AND SPED UP AFTER I ENGAGED THEM. CAUSING MY VEHICLE TO COLLIDE WITH TWO OTHER VEHICLES
DRIVING DOWN A STRAIGHT ROAD (THANK GOODNESS), NO TRAFFIC CLOSE BY, NO OVERPASS AND GOING ABOUT 45MPH. I HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE A SHOT GUN IN MY CAR. I HEARD AIR AND LOOKED UP AND MY SUN ROOF WAS BUSTED. NO WAY ANYTHING HIT IT. I WAS ON TOP OF A BRIDGE WITH NO WALKWAY AND A RIVER ABOUT 5 STORIES UNDERNEATH. I WAS SCARED TO DEATH AND MY POOR DOG IN THE BACK IS STILL TRAUMATIZED. I PULLED OVER AND THE SUNROOF WAS BUSTED ALL AROUND THE EDGES AND A BIG HOLE IN THE MIDDLE PROTRUDING OUT TOWARD THE SKY (NOT INWARD LIKE SOMETHING HIT IT). YOU CAN SEE FROM THE PHOTOS. HAD ROADSIDE SERVICE TOW IT 1HR 45 MINS TO THE DEALERSHIP. OF COURSE THEY ARE SAYING THAT IT IS AN INSURANCE THING AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. THEY AREN'T EVEN ACKNOWLEDGING THE FACT THAT THIS HAPPENS. THEY ARE SAYING THAT THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENING. THERE IS A ALFA ROMEO FORUM AND I SAW 4 DIFFERENT INSTANCES IN THAT ONE FORUM JUST TODAY. THE PICTURES ALL LOOK LIKE MINE WITH THE EDGES OF THE SUNROOF ALL BROKEN AND A BIG HOLE IN THE MIDDLE PROTRUDING OUT. IF I HADN'T OF HAD THE SUNSHADE DOWN, THEN GLASS WOULD HAVE RAINED DOWN ON ME AND I THINK I WOULD HAVE WRECKED. RIGHT NOW OUR INSURANCE ISN'T EVEN WANTING TO GIVE US A RENTAL B/C THEY SAY IT IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT AND THEY NEED TO PAY FOR IT. I SAW THAT THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT ON HYUNDAI DUE TO THE SAME ISSUES. HOW CAN THE US NOT HAVE BETTER REGULATIONS THAT THIS. IF I WEREN'T GOING SLOW ON A PERFECTLY STRAIGHT ROAD, AS SCARED AS THAT SHOTGUN SOUND MADE ME, I CAN TOTALLY SEE HAVING AN ACCIDENT. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT NEEDS ADDRESSING OR A WARNING TO THE PUBLIC THAT THE SUNROOFS ARE NOT SAFE.
IT IS DISGUSTING THAT AUTO MANUFACTURERS DON'T GIVE A SPARE OR RUN FLATS ON A CAR TODAY. I WAS ON I95 WITH MY FAMILY WHEN MY NEW ONE DAY OLD CAR HAD BLOWOUT AT 10PM AT NIGHT. ALFA ROADSIDE TOOK 6 HOURS TO FIND US. THIS IS SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE I WAS STUCK SIDE OF THE BLACK DARKEN HIGHWAY WITHOUT SPARE. THE SEMI TRUCK PASSING 12 INCHES AWAY FROM MY CAR DOING 80+ MPH. HOW IS IT IN 2019 MANUFACTURERS CAN SELL A CAR WITHOUT A SPARE OR EVEN FLARES. THE WORST PART ALFA OFFER SPARE AS OPTION BUT SINCE MY CAR CAME WITHOUT IT I CAN'T ORDER A SPARE NO WHERE. ALFA DON'T OFFER TO SENT A SPARE AFTERMARKET. TIRE RACK TOLD ME THAT THEY DON'T HAVE OR ARE AVAILABLE SPARES THAT FIT MY ALFA STELVIO. A SPARE TIRE KIT WEIGH 20 LBS AND HOW MUCH GAS CAN A PERSON SAVE. I WAS TOLD IT IS MPG THING. I AM IN THE DOGHOUSE WITH MY FAMILY AND I HAVE TO BUY ANOTHER FULL SIZE WHEEL AND TIRE TO USED AS MY SPARE. THE CAR HAS 20 INCH WHEELS AND TAKES UP 1/2 TRUNK SPACE. IF I PUT ON ANOTHER ALFA SMALLER RIM LIKE 18 TO SAVE SPACE I WAS TOLD BY MANUFACTURERS MY WARRANTY IS VOID! I HAVING MY COUSIN IN ITALY SENT ME A DONUT SPARE FOR EMERGENCY. THE SPARE IS FROM ALFA ROMEO STELVIO TI MADE IN ITALY WHEEL THAT HAS SPARES INCLUDED AND SELL AFTERMARKET. THE DEALER SAYS IF I USED I LOSE MY WARRANTY. SAFETY ISSUES BEING STRUCK ON I95 WITHOUT A SPARE. HOW CAN NHTSA MAKE MANUFACTURERS GET AWAY WITH THIS IN 2019. SPARES ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY OTHER SAFETY FEATURES
HELLO, I BOUGHT AN ALFA ROMEO STELVIO 2018 ON DECEMBER 31ST 2018, PRE-OWNED WITH 4800 MILES. AT 7900 MILES THE BRAKES WARNING CAME UP, I TOOK THE CAR AT THE ALFA ROMEO DEALERSHIP. THEY REPLACED THE REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS, THEY ALSO MADE ME PAY FOR IT SAYING IT WASN'T UNDER WARRANTY, WHICH I DON'T UNDERSTAND BECAUSE ALFA ROMEO WARRANTY FOR THE BRAKES SERVICE IS UP TO 12,000 MILES OR 1 YEAR ( THE CAR NOW HAS 8100 MILES). WHILE AT THE DEALERSHIP THEY ALSO DID EARLIER THE 12 MONTHS SERVICE. AFTER SCANNING THE ENTIRE SYSTEM I'VE BEEN TOLD THAT THE CAR WAS IN GREAT SHAPE. I PICKED UP THE CAR FROM THE DEALERSHIP, AND I WAS DRIVING BACK HOME, AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 60 MILES, THE ENTIRE ELECTRONIC STARTED TO ACT REALLY WEIRD, I WAS GETTING COUNTLESS WARNINGS ON THE DASHBOARD, THE TURN LIGHTS STOPPED WORKING, ALL LIGHTS AROUND THE CAR STARTED RANDOMLY FLASHING, THE CAR STOPPED ACCELERATING, AC SYSTEM STOPPED WORKING THE WINDOWS GOT FOGGY I COULDN'T SEE ANYTHING, I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY RUNNING 60/70 MILES/HOUR, ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT WHILE TRYING TO PULL THE CAR OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THIS IS A BIG SAFETY/RELIABILITY CONCERN OF MINE, THE CAR TOTALLY STALLED WHILE RUNNING AT 60/70 MILES/HOUR ON A HIGHWAY, PUTTING MY SAFETY/LIFE AT BIG RISK. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. I'M SERIOUSLY THINKING TO HAVE THE CAR REPLACED OR REIMBURSED. IS THERE ANY KIND OF ACTION I CAN TAKE WITH ALFA ROMEO USA TO HAVE THE CAR REPLACED/REIMBURSED? BEST REGARDS, *TR
11/10/18 PICKED UP NEW CAR FROM THE DEALER 11/12, 11/13,11/14, 11/15, 11/19 CAR STARTED & HAD NO ISSUES. 11/20/18 CAR DID NOT START, ENGINE LIGHT INDICATOR IS ON. HAD ROAD SIDE ASSISTANCE BOOST BATTERY. UNSUCCESSFUL. CAR TOWED BACK TO DEALER 0N 11/21/18 11/23 CAR RETURNED, DROVE CAR 11/26/18 WITHOUT ISSUES. 11/27/18 CAR DID NOT START, ENGINE LIGHT & OIL LIGHT INDICATOR ON, CAR TOWED BACK TO DEALER. 12/4/18 CAR RETURNED TO ME AND WORKING. DROVE CAR ABOUT 10-15 MILES, WHILE DRIVING I NOTICED THE ENGINE LIGHT INDICATOR WAS ON WHILE DRIVING. CALLED DEALER WHILE IN CAR, AND DEALER INSTRUCTED TO RETURN CAR SAME DAY. I DID NOT STOP OR TURN OFF THE CAR UNTIL I ARRIVED AT THE DEALER ( SAME DAY) I DROVE UP TO SERVICE DEALER PARKING LOT AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. WHILE WAITING,AT DEALER THE STAFF INFORMED THAT THE CAR DID NOT START, AND THEY HAD TO PUSH THE CAR INSIDE OF THE SERVICE AREA. AS OF THIS REPORT, I DO NOT HAVE A WORKING CAR.
ON SEPTEMBER 21, 2018 WHOLE COOLER ENGINE FLUID WAS FLUSHED INSIDE IN THE PASSENGER SIDE CAR. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED ON 09-19-2018. THE RECALL HAD BEEN SEEN SINCE 09-14-2018. THE CAR WAS SOLD TO US WITH A SAFETY RECALL WITH SAME VIN NUMBER
AFTER FUELING UP THE FUEL TANK, THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN ON THE HIGHWAY AND SMOKE BEGAN TO EMIT OUT FROM THE VEHICLE'S HOOD. THE DRIVER WAS NOT ALERTED THERE WAS ANY ISSUE FROM THE VEHICLE'S DASHBOARD INDICATOR/WARNING LIGHTS. THE DRIVER PULLED OVER ON THE HIGHWAY SHOULDER AND THE VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE UNTIL THE FIRE/POLICE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED ON SCENE. *DT UPDATED 10/22/18*JB
I GOT MY ALFA ROMEO STELVIO IN NOVEMBER 2017 AND LESS THAN A YEAR, IT GOT TOO MANY PROBLEMS, SOME OF WHICH ARE SERIOUS N GOOD HELP FROM DEALERS. PROBLEMS: 1.FROM MONTHS, I WAS GETTING ALL LIGHTS OUT INDICATIONS WHERE ALL LIGHTS WORK, WHEN I PUT INDICATOR ON IT GIVES ANNOYING SOUND IN CAR. (THIS HAPPENS WHILE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION & STATIONARY) 2.WHEN IT RAINS OUTSIDE, WATER LEAKAGE IN CAR NEAR FRONT SIDE PASSENGER LEGS ' (THIS HAPPENS WHILE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION & STATIONARY) 3.VOLUME IN CAR RAISES AND HIT MAX AUTOMATICALLY. (THIS HAPPENS WHILE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION) 4.IF I TURN OFF CAR AND GET DOWN WHILE I WAS ON CALL, STILL MEDIA DOES NOT GO OFF UNLESS I MANUALLY DISCONNECT MY PHONE FROM CAR BLUETOOTH. 5.PARKING BREAK GETS AUTO RELEASE WHEN I PRESS ON ACCELERATOR. 6.ONE MORE HUGE STUPID ISSUE FROM ALFA ROMEO. WHILE I WAS DRIVING, I GOT INDICATOR SAYING ENGINE ON/OFF BUTTON NOT AVAILABLE AND WAS HONKING BY ITSELF AND THAT TOO WHEN I WAS DRIVING. WHEN I PULLED OVER FROM TRAFFIC & TURN OFF VEHICLE THEN IT GOES INTO PANIC MODE. THIS IS SO STUPID N SERIOUS. (THIS HAPPENS WHILE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION & STATIONARY) IMPORTANT NOTE: I UNDERSTAND MOST OF THE ABOVE STATED ISSUES WERE PART OF RECALLS (U34 & U36). STRANGE THING IS WHEN I CHECKED WITH DEALER & ALFA ROMEO PREMIUM CARE, AS PER DOCUMENTATION THE RECALL FIXES WERE DONE ON MY CAR. WHICH MEANS THE RECALL FIXES WERE NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO FIX THE ISSUES, WHICH CAUSED FOR RECALL AND AS STATED BY THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA) THESE ISSUES WILL INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH. SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT WITH MOST RATED MOTOR TREND OF THE YEAR ALFA ROMEO. AM JUST GIVING RECENT DATE WHEN HAPPENED, BUT THIS IS HAPPENING FROM LONG AND NOT PROPER SUPPORT FROM DEALER TO FIX IT. WHEN LAST TIME IT HAPPENED I WENT TO DEALER AND LEFT CAR WITH THEM. VISIBILTY WIPER/OTHER PARTS AFFECTED TOO.
THE FORWARD COLLISION WARNING SYSTEM ACTIVATED FOR NO REASON. AS I WAS STARTING TO ACCELERATE FROM A TRAFFIC LIGHT ON A CITY STREET IT CAME ON SUDDENLY AND RAPIDLY DECELERATED THE VEHICLE. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS BEHIND ME.
WHILE I WAS DRIVING 15 MPH ON A PRIVATE ROAD, I SUDDENLY LOST POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES. I MANAGED TO BRING THE CAR TO A STOP, BUT I COULDN'T ENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE, SHIFT OUT OF DRIVE, OR TURN THE CAR OFF. THE ELECTRONIC SHIFTER, ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE, AND ELECTRONIC STARTER WERE ALL UNRESPONSIVE. I SAW NUMEROUS WARNING MESSAGES ON THE DASHBOARD. ONE OF THEM SAID "SERVICE SHIFTER. CONTINUE IN D. DO NOT SHIFT OR TURN ENGINE OFF", BUT IT DIDN'T TELL ME WHAT I COULD DO TO RETURN THE CAR TO A SAFE STATE. I KEPT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND CALLED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. I ASKED THEM WHAT MY OPTIONS WERE, AND THEY TOLD ME THAT I COULD WAIT UNTIL THE CAR RUNS OUT OF GAS. I'M NOT SURE WHAT I DID, BUT I EVENTUALLY GOT THE CARE TO SHUT OFF, BUT IT STAYED IN NEUTRAL, SO I STILL COULDN'T TAKE MY FOOT OFF OF THE BRAKE. EVENTUALLY A TOW TRUCK ARRIVED AND GOT THE CAR IN TO PARK BY ENTERING THE CARGO AREA BY CLIMBING THROUGH THE BACK SEAT,DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY, AND RECONNECTING IT.
DEPRESSED BRAKE CAME TO A STOP THEN ENGINE REVVED UP AND CAR TOOK OFF WHILE FOOT ON BRAKE HAD TO ENGAGE CAR INTO PARK TO GET IT INTO STOP VERY DANGEROUS THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES REPORTED TO DEALERSHIP AGAIN SECOND TIME I'VE REPORTED TO NHTSA CAR NOT SAFE TO DRIVE
SOMETIMES WHEN BRAKES ARE INITIATED THE ENGINE ACCELERATES AND SPEEDS UP
I BOUGHT MY 2018 STELVIO IN DEC 2017. I THOUGHT IT WAS ODD THE CAR NEEDED A SOFTWARE UPDATE ONLY ABOUT THREE DAYS AFTER HAVING IT - NOW AFTER RESEARCHING I'VE LEARNED MANY PEOPLE HAVE BROUGHT THEIR NEW ALFA ROMEOS IN FOR "SOFTWARE UPDATES" RELATED TO ALL THE SENSORS AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS. MY CAR CURRENTLY HAS ABOUT 5K MILES ON IT AND IN THOSE MILES I HAVE EXPERIENCED ON ABOUT 3 OR 4 OCCASIONS A WARNING MESSAGE ON MY DISPLAY THAT READS "GEAR SELECTOR MALFUNCTION" OR "AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE". THE MESSAGE ALSO TELLS ME FOR BOTH ISSUES NOT TO SHIFT OUT OF "DRIVE". AFTER ABOUT 10 SECONDS THE ERROR WENT AWAY. I THOUGHT IT WAS A FLUKE BECAUSE DURING THAT MOMENT I NEVER FELT ANY DIFFERENCE OR EXPERIENCED ANYTHING STRANGE. HOWEVER, I WAS IN A COLLISION WITH A STATIONARY OBJECT (A METAL BARRIER POLE IN A PARKING LOT). I PUT THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE, THE VEHICLE INDICATED IT WAS IN REVERSE AND THE REAR CAMERA DISPLAYED ALONG WITH THE OVERHEAD PICTURE OF THE VEHICLE WITH THE SENSOR LAYOUT. I PROCEEDED TO BACK UP BY PUSHING THE THROTTLE AND THE VEHICLE LAUNCHED FORWARD WITH A HUGE AMOUNT OF FORCE. I STRUCK THE POLE. NO ONE WAS INJURED. NO PROPERTY DAMAGE OTHER THAN TO MY VEHICLE. INITIAL ASSESSMENT IS METAL BUMPER REPLACEMENT, RADIATOR AND COOLING. BUT AIRBAGS NEVER DEPLOYED. HOWEVER THE SENSORS NEVER INDICATED I WAS NEAR AN OBJECT EITHER WHILE I WAS CLEARLY IN REVERSE. AFTER RESEARCH I FOUND THERE HAVE BEEN A SLEW OF ELECTRICAL ISSUES AS ALFAS ARE DRIVE BY WIRE AND USE SENSORS AND SOFTWARE TO RUN THE VEHICLE AND PEOPLE ARE REPORTING BAD BATTERIES WHICH ARE CAUSING FAULTS. I BELIEVE MY FAULT HAS TO DO WITH A BAD BATTERY WITH LOW VOLTAGE AND MY SENSORS AND SOFTWARE ARE NOT UP TO DATE WHICH I SHOULD BE NOTIFIED ABOUT. I'VE FILED AN INSURANCE CLAIM HOWEVER I WOULD LIKE ESCALATE THIS INCIDENT TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE FOR MYSELF AND OTHERS AND TO PREVENT FUTURE OCCURRENCES.
Component Failure Cascade Risk
Known patterns where one defect leads to more severe downstream failures
▸ Head gasket failure and engine overheating — EGR cooler failure is the leading cause of catastrophic engine failure on diesel engines
▸ Engine oil starvation leading to bearing failure — blocked oil cooler is fatal to the engine if not addressed immediately
▸ Engine stalling at speed — fuel delivery failure can cause sudden loss of power in traffic or on highways
▸ Loss of brake assist and ABS in emergency — can significantly extend stopping distances
Complaint & Reliability Timeline
Annual complaints (blue) vs. composite reliability score (amber) — recall years marked in red
The blue line shows 112 total NHTSA complaints filed over 9 years, with the worst year being 2025 (27 complaints).
The amber reliability line is declining — recent years score around 35/100, lower than earlier in the vehicle's life. This pattern indicates issues are accumulating over time rather than being resolved, which is a concern for used buyers.
The recalls (red dashed lines) were issued in the same year or before complaints peaked, suggesting the manufacturer identified and acted on the defect relatively quickly.
Red dots on the amber line flag 2 years (2019, 2026) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
