Critical Deferred Risk
Critical deferred failure risk — 4 safety-critical or high-cost components are past their service interval. Without immediate attention, repair costs will compound significantly.
No odometer data on record. Mileage is estimated at ~132,000 mi based on average annual driving. Items marked EST. OVERDUE may already be due — verify service history with the seller. Items marked OVERDUE are confirmed past-due based on vehicle age alone.
EST. OVERDUECriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Service interval: 10 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Timing Chain Tensioner immediately — already past the 120,000 mi / 10 yr interval
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
EST. OVERDUECriticalWater Pump
Service interval: 8 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Water Pump immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 8 yr interval
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
EST. OVERDUEHighTransmission Fluid / Service
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Transmission Fluid / Service immediately — already past the 60,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
EST. OVERDUEHighCoolant Flush
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Coolant Flush immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
EST. OVERDUEModerateSpark Plugs (iridium/platinum)
Service interval: 8 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Spark Plugs (iridium/platinum) immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 8 yr interval
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
EST. OVERDUEModerateFuel Injectors
Service interval: 10 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Fuel Injectors immediately — already past the 120,000 mi / 10 yr interval
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.

I am reporting a safety-related engine defect involving sudden internal engine failure, excessive oil consumption, persistent bearing knock, and overheating of the catalytic converter. The vehicle repeatedly triggered Bank 1&2O2 sensor fault codes due to oil blow-by and thermal overload. A certified mechanic documented the engine is failing internally and that the cat. converter has been damaged as a direct result of engine defect. The failure pattern is consistent with known Hyundai engine defect investigations involving bearing wear, oil consumption, stalling, and fire risk. The overheating cat. converter presents a significant safety hazard, including potential engine seizure. I purchased the vehicle used in March 2025. I am the third owner. Despite maintaining the vehicle responsibly (Regular oil changes), the engine failure progressed rapidly. Hyundai Motor America has denied a goodwill repair solely on the basis of mileage, even though the defect clearly originated long before my ownership and aligns with previously identified safety-related engine issues. Additionally, Hyundai's records show that this vehicle had an engine-related recall active during prior ownership period; the recall was never performed by the Hyundai dealership that sold the vehicle to the previous owner. This raises concerns about improper recall handling and whether the defect should have been corrected before the vehicle was resold. Given the safety implications, the documented defect pattern, and the unresolved recall history, I am requesting NHTSA's review of this matter. The engine failure poses a serious safety risk; Hyundai's refusal to address a known defect, the vehicle is unsafe to operate. Timeline: 2014 Hatchett Hyundai West, KS 17,665 mi.; 2017-H. I took my car to Gilroy Hyundai November 11, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. because my engine was not running normal, it shook lightly while driving at an incline and the engine light would not shut off. they charged me $284.99 to tell me what needed to be fixed, engine was not looked per Ernesto Garcia. Ernest told me they go by mileage, not actually checking the engine. He also stated that the mechanic drove it and it was fine. December 28, I was driving from Chico, CA back home to Morgan Hill, CA and the car shook and just died and left me on the side of Highway 505 Winters/San Francisco. I had it towed to Moorehead Automotive in Fairfield, CA and they said this car needs a new engine. I still owe 7,000.00 on this car and have had trouble with both Hyundai and Power (the additional insurance I purchased when i bought this car.)

I noticed the engine was losing oil constantly and the exhaust was emitting black smoke often, I had to refill the oil about once a month, eventually the car broke down and took it to a Hyundai dealership. They said they needed to perform a leakdown/compression test on the car, and $585 to perform a diagnostic. Then they said the leak down/compression test showed the exhaust valves had broken and they would need to do a long block replacement. Also mentioned they needed to have Hyundai allow them to release that long block as it is part of a recall on other vehicles. Later was told Hyundai did not approve it under the warranty.

Constant knocking noise under the engine which related to the Rod bearing recall. This car is a FIRE and SAFETY HAZARD waiting to happen. My outlets barely produce power, my lights flicker constantly, my battery has been replaced multiple times, as well as the HVAC once.

HVAC system wiring is melted, only works intermittently between knob #3-4. check engine light comes off and on for Wheel Speed Sensor (all 4) Invalid/No Signal. Fuses consistently blow. Multiple complains have been made by other 2015 Hyundai Veloster Turbo owners. In addition to these issues being a HUGE fire risk, there was a new fire risk safety recall issued in sept 2023 with no resolution. Hyundais only current resolution for this is to “park away from structures in the meantime”, and will send a letter out once resolved. The HVAC system has been replaced once prior.

The car I bought in February in a used car lot was, per the salesperson, in excellent condition, had recently done oil changes, and had allegedly no failures. After less than 3k miles, I got stalled on the freeway with a knocking noise; Frank Hyundai mechanics diagnosed it with a CVV oil sensor red flag. I then paid for the repairs after getting denied from both my Hyundai warranty and my extended warranty. This was neglect when I drove that car for just a few months, like a weekend car, less than 3k miles. The car was still stalling on the freeway, shooting smoke, and the check engine light came on. I miraculously made it in one piece to work; however, the car had to be towed back to Frank Hyundai, where, to this day, they still have not been able to repair or precisely diagnose my vehicle, so I have been without my vehicle for almost a month and a half. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one with this problem; I think it's unfair to pay for the past owner's negligence.

I bought this vehicle from a used car lot in February 2023, not 2022, and drove it under 3k miles; when I took it, it had 86k miles, and the check engine light came on. I took it to FRANK HYUNDAI, where, to this day, have not been able to help me; all this time, I, the consumer, had to chase down the repair guy assigned to my car and, only to be vaguely told it was sludge and metal shedding. It might be my misuse or neglect when I had driven the damn thing before even recommended servicing or an oil change was needed. I also called Hyundai Motors corporate, where a case manager suggested a goodwill repair, but nothing had been done. I would appreciate any help NHTSA could provide as there are campaigns on this model car with engine rod failures, and the damn extended warranty should apply to subsequent owners.

This happens randomly, no warning, no special conditions, just out of nowhere, and for no reasons. Since I bought the car in September of 2020 (used, as is) it has done it now 7 or 8 times, with tonight being the most recent occurrence. Engine failure outside of normal warranty period. However oil consumption is the cause. Hyundai allows for 1quart of oil loss every 1000 miles. There should be no oil loss. Before I could get an oil consumption test my motor started knocking. The dealership was supposed ask for goodwill assistance but never did. They found no compression in cylinder 4 and stated since it wasn’t a rod bearing failure they would not cover it. Also they are using third party BBB to turn down complaints which should be a violation of the consumers rights. They are paid by Hyundai to reject claims.

Three times now my 2015 Veloster has been in the shop for the same issues. Loss of power while driving. They did software update first time. That was a year ago. It has been actiing sluggish since. Then two weeks ago my husband was driving it made a loud noise and the power went to limp mode and engine light came on. Took 4 hours for a tow truck to pick up him and my car. I took it to the shop again, they had it for almost 2 weeks. Told me the spark plugs were bad. They replaced them. That didn't help. Then they said the Catalytic converter was bad. So they replaced that. I picked it up today 4/20/23 at 2:00pm. I then drove 7 miles from the shop and heard a loud noise and the power reduced to 20 MPH I could not go any faster it was in limp mode and I crawled it back to the dealership. I told them I got an extended warranty 3 years ago and I got notified my car would need a new motor. They told me it would take a long time to get a motor and they were sure it was not my motor. I can't afford a tow truck bill again and I can't afford to keep fixing things it may not need they are just guessing. They told me it may take awhile this time because they have no idea what is wrong with it. But it was scary doing 45 mph with speed of traffic and just lose power. My husband was doing 65 MPH when it happened to him. I have babied my car since new and I only have 60,000 miles on it. I hardly have broken it in. I don't know what to do now. I don't want this to happen and have and accident because of it or a fire. I have grandkids in my car with me and I don't feel safe anymore.

We purchased the vehicle in March 2022 and in May 2022 the engine light came on and there was knocking in the engine until finally the engine quit while driving. Upon inspection of the engine it appeared to have blown as there was oil all under the hood. The car was towed and serviced at a Hyundai dealer and I was told it needed a new engine. They put another engine in the car. We got the car back December 31, 2022 with the "new/used" engine and that night the engine overheated and had to be towed back to the dealer that did the repairs costing almost $10K. They repaired the engine again, saying that they put another engine in and we got the car back in late February 2023. April 2023 the car engine light came on again and the car began to smoke. My son had been driving, pulled into our driveway, popped the hood to see why it was smoking and the car then caught fire! My son could have been seriously hurt or even worse! The car has been inspected by our insurance company and is now claiming a total loss. I have since emailed the pictures of the car to the service manager at the dealer where the work was done and he is claiming that he can't tell by the pictures what caused the fire. There were no issues with my car prior to bringing it to this location and no warning lights were appearing on my dash to alert me of any problems. Now that they claim that they have completed replacing my engine, they are claiming that the alternator on my car is now damaged and needs to be replaced for $535.15, and if I do not replace it my car will not start without a jump start. Before bringing my car into this location there was no problems getting my car to start. The representative I spoke to claimed the part no longer works because the engine is new and the preexisting parts are old so they will most likely be damaged now because they are unable to work with the new engine. Again there were no issues with my car outside of the recall. It was running perfectly with no issues before I brought it to this service center and the only reason I brought it in was because I got the recall notice in the mail. Along with this issue they have had my car for since May 20th and it is now October 1st, because of this new issue they still have my car even though they claim to have completed the recall service. They wanted to keep looking for the problem but I told them no, just put it back together that I wasn't going to pay them to search for their defect. I have since been told by someone who claimed to be a mechanic for Hyundai that it is a computer chip problem that requires them to pull a lot of things on the dash to replace the chip and it is not cheap. I have a Hyundai Veloster 2015 base (dual-clutch transmission) that has 152,000 miles. I’ve regularly kept up with maintenance. Fully synthetic oil changed every ~5k miles. About a month ago it got a brand new battery and a new alternator. I have some issues related to the transmission. My owners manual regarding transmission fluid says: TRANSMISSION FLUID: -Checking 6-speed automatic transmission fluid: The automatic transmission does not have a transmission fluid dipstick. Refer to your scheduled maintenance information for scheduled intervals for fluid checks and changes. Your transmission does not consume fluid. I’ve recently experienced intermittent issues with the transmission failing to engage 1st gear from a stop. I have a code P073F as well as P0420 that’s been intermittent for months. (I know that’s the cat converter) The engine revs but does not accelerate at all from a stop on occasion. It happened three times in the week. Also have issues with clutch (DCT) overheating. When this occurs, I will see the current gear that I am in (usually D but it has occurred in all others except P, N, and R) begins to flash (usually three times) with a chime warning noise. Restarting the vehicle resolves the issue occasionally. Then, a few days ago, after coming off of the highway I was no longer to get the car to go faster than around 20 to 30 mph and began to hear a loud clanking/metallic sound seemingly from the engine. The gear indicator began blinking rapidly and continued to blink in every gear in D as well as S and even when I put the vehicle in park. After turning it off and waiting about 10 mins I turned it on and the “P” was no longer blinking. Decided to test driving it through the parking lot and began blinking again pretty much as soon as it shifted gears and began to hear a metallic noise again. I suppose that I assumed it being a closed-circuit or “sealed” transmission meant there wasn’t maintenance to be done on it.

When it does, my gauge cluster will not register RPM's. After several more restarts (usually 6), the RPM's will finally register but my car will not go into Drive or Reverse. Several more restarts and my car will finally go into gear. This usually occurs over a 20 minute period.

The engine in my 15 Veloster is going out at only 140,00 miles despite tedious care and up keep. I've had a issue of rough idling, loss of power to the engine including a back fire. The engine makes a distinct ticking noise when the accelerator is pushed down. I have paperwork from a mechanic that reports these problems and them looking at it. They told me to take it to the dealership. I took it to a Bachman Hyundai and they said it definitely had connecting rod bearings issues. They were surprised it wasn't under recall. As was I when I saw online from multiple sources, that "2015-2016 Veloster, 2012 Santa Fe, 2011-2013 Sonata Hybrid, and 2016 Sonata Hybrid vehicle" had this recall. My VIN is not applied to this recall however. I have contacted Hyundai Customer care and they refuse to give me a explanation of this reasoning. I asked if they were made in different plants. He gave me no straight forward response, and declined my request to speak with a supervisor with more information. The dealership will not replace the engine, and I will not pay over 6,000 to replace a engine that "can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash." This event happened multiple times but off and on. When I took it to the dealership they didn’t experience the issue so they couldn’t resolve it. I had a case against Hyundai but they didn’t care. From the Whistleblower that just came out against Hyundais safety protocols I have a firm belief Hyundai knew that there engines were faulty and my life was almost taken. My 2015 Veloster Reflex has been at Alan Jackson, Jackson TN. for 45 days. The vehicle was serviced there for campaigns/recalls. The primary complaint, engine failure while I was driving down Highway 70, the engine completely shut off, a defective engine, a product which Hyundai is at fault. The defective engine is consuming 1 quart of oil per 80 miles. I asked the service department to start the oil consumption test, Brian the lead technician, responded "You need a new engine." This safety hazard and economic burden has yet to be resolved. The Veloster is kept and maintained in immaculate condition. While the vehicle is only garage kept, it is now in the elements without protection, remaining on the lot of the service department for over 45 days, which is not in good faith a suitable resolution period. I commute 100 miles round trip for my profession as a University Professor in Microbiology for the University of Tennessee. My 2015 Veloster Reflex is my primary mode of transportation to various satellite and main campus obligatory profession duties. I am without transportation due to Hyundai's negalence in properly addressing these chief safety hazardous engine failures/massive oil (synthetic) consumption which is now blowing through my catalytic converter, exiting through my exhaust tips, turning them black and splattering oil along my rear bumper. The original case manager, Jose, failed to respond to this safety hazard in the 10 business days which Hyundai has set forth, as well as, when Jose would tried to be reached on my behalf, Jose was never available, in addition too, his voicemail was always full, which meant I could not leave a message. Again, is this how Hyundai's customer care is really showing through their actions that they do care?

So my Manual Heater knob randomly stopped working as I was driving on 6/4/21 around 11 am as I was about to do an errand run for my family. I was told from a friend that there was a TSB issued on it and looked it up. I went to my local dealership Island Hyundai Staten island explained what was going on and they told me because it is a TSB and not a recall you will be responsible for the cost of repair. I told them why should I when this is a defective situation out of my hands I shouldn't have too.

I HAVE REPORTED AN ISSUE TO RONNIE FREEZE, SERVICE MANAGER AT O. B. , MS. HYUNDAI IN APRIL 2015. LESS THAN 3 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE. I HAD ENGINE AND STARTING FAILURE FOR 15-25 MINUTES AFTER A CHECK SENSOR CODE POPPED UP. I GAVE THIS CODE TO SERVICE, AND ALL THEY COULD SAY WAS, 'WELL, I NEVER HEARD OF THAT'. LET ME KNOW IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. AND IT DID, AND I REPORTED IT, AND... NOTHING. SAME OLD THING, DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT COULD BE. WELL AFTER THE THIRD TIME, I BEGAN TO FEEL THE CAR RUNNING STILL EVEN WHEN THE KEY WAS REMOVED. SOUNDS CRAZY BUT I HAD MULTIPLE FAMILY MEMBERS WHO WITNESSED THIS ISSUE. SCARY THAT I REPORTED THIS ALSO, BUT NOBODY KNEW ANYTHING TO DO. MR. FREEZE AT OLIVE BRANCH HYUNDAI ACTED LIKE I WAS CRAZY. I KNOW WHEN THERE IS AN ISSUE AND I SAY THAT I HAVE HAD ONE SINCE I SIGNED PAPERS ON 01/23/2015. I AM EXTREMELY LUCKY THAT A FIRE HASN'T STARTED WITH MY VEHICLE APPARENTLY NOT COMPLETELY SHUTTING DOWN. I FEEL THAT SOMEONE HAS KNOWN ABOUT THE CURRENT SITUATION WITH THE ENGINE AND I ALSO FEEL THAT I PURCHASED A LEMON THIS TIME WITH HYUNDAI. I LOVE MY CAR AND TRULY HATE THE FEELING OF NOT KNOWING IF I WILL BE SAFE THE NEXT TIME I GET IN MY VEHICLE TO DRIVE ANYWHERE. I FEEL THAT A SATISFACTORY RESPONSE IS NEEDED IMMEDIATELY FROM HYUNDAI AS TO WHAT I SHOULD EXPECT FROM THEM. I NEED ANSWERS RIGHT AWAY. IT HAS BEEN TOO LONG OR HYUNDAI TO DECIDE WHAT THE SOLUTION WILL BE. I NEED A RESPONSE FROM THE COMPANY NOW! I NO LONGER PUT 100% TRUST IN HYUNDAI. WHAT COULD THE RECALL COVER? A REPLACEMENT ENGINE, AND REPLACEMENT ROD BEARINGS, AND EVERYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DAMAGED? I FEEL LIKE HYUNDAI HAS FAILED MAJOR BY NOT DOING ANYTHING TO REMEDY THE DEFECT IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME!! I DON'T HAVE A SAFE CAR TO DRIVE ANYWHERE NOW. I WANT ANSWERS.

The blue line shows 133 total NHTSA complaints filed over 12 years, with the worst year being 2021 (30 complaints).

The amber reliability line is declining — recent years score around 28/100, lower than earlier in the vehicle's life. This pattern indicates issues are accumulating over time rather than being resolved, which is a concern for used buyers.

The red dashed line marks recall issuance — the first recall came 5 years after owners began filing complaints, a lag that indicates the manufacturer was slow to formally acknowledge these problems.
