Deferred Failure Risk

Components and defects approaching or past their known service milestones

48/100
Warning Deferred Risk
5 maintenance items are approaching or past their service milestones. Address these before purchase or negotiate the cost into the sale price.
No odometer data on record. Mileage is estimated at ~84,000 mi based on average annual driving. Items marked EST. OVERDUE may already be due — verify service history with the seller. Items marked OVERDUE are confirmed past-due based on vehicle age alone.
MONITORCriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Service interval: 120,000 mi · Est. ~84,000 mi (no odometer on record)
Schedule Timing Chain Tensioner service before 120,000 mi
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
DUE SOONCriticalWater Pump
Service interval: 100,000 mi · Est. ~84,000 mi (no odometer on record)
Schedule Water Pump service before 100,000 mi
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
EST. OVERDUEHighTransmission Fluid / Service
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 7 yr · Past due by age
Service Transmission Fluid / Service immediately — already past the 60,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
EST. OVERDUEHighDifferential / Transfer Case Fluid
Service interval: 4 yr · Vehicle age: 7 yr · Past due by age
Service Differential / Transfer Case Fluid immediately — already past the 50,000 mi / 4 yr interval
On 4WD/AWD vehicles, neglected differential or transfer case fluid causes metal-on-metal wear. Replacement costs $1,500–$4,000.
EST. OVERDUEHighCoolant Flush
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 7 yr · Past due by age
Service Coolant Flush immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
DUE SOONModerateSpark Plugs (iridium/platinum)
Service interval: 100,000 mi · Est. ~84,000 mi (no odometer on record)
Schedule Spark Plugs (iridium/platinum) service before 100,000 mi
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
MONITORModerateFuel Injectors
Service interval: 120,000 mi · Est. ~84,000 mi (no odometer on record)
Schedule Fuel Injectors service before 120,000 mi
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.

While driving the car the start loosing power and attempts to shut down, other time the steering wheel locks up up and im unable to turn steering wheel. The check engine light comes on and turns off. The dealer/ Car repair shop has been unable to reproduce issue and unable tell me what this issue is. No accident has resulted from this as of yet. But car has some kind of malfuctioning issue.

See attached document for complaint.

ODI #11721921STEERING

Steering wheel frozen in position on morning cold start below 20 degrees Fahrenheit even when car is put in drive. I must warm the cabin for 15 minutes to thaw the steering column or manually pull down on wheel to loosen the column. Below 10 degrees, steering wheel is firm and power steering does not return wheel to original position going around turns unless physically coaxed. Problem goes away at warmer temperatures or if cabin stays warm. Chevy dealership replaced steering rack under warranty and recommends steering column kit be replaced. Will replace column by next fall. Problem started at around 60,000 mi. No warning lights or error codes when frozen.

I was in an accident and the seatbelt pretensioners activated but my airbags did not deploy. When i got my vehicle inspected the shop noticed my airbag system needed to be replaced saying the airbag diagnostic module, right & left front air bag impact sensors needed to be replaced. The impact of my vehicle was very minor and could not have damaged the airbag diagnostic module internally. I do believe this was a preexisting issue and it has just now been noticed when my car had to be thoroughly inspected.

At roughly 90,000 miles, the turboboost charger went out in this vehicle and needed to be replaced. After speaking with my mechanic and other Chevy owners, it is a common issue in these vehicles, with many needing to be replaced well before the 90,000 mile mark that I hit.

The turbocharger gave code P0299 then more extensive look when you try to increase speed the turbo will not boost to allow you to go. 40-45 miles is the highest you can go . Dealership said there we complaints and recalls. The recalls are for 2017 and 2018 chevy trax. 2019 having the same issue..

One of the first things I've noticed about my car is in the summer, when it's at least 75 degrees, my transmission will hesitate while speeding up. In march of 2024, my check engine light came on, i brought it into chevy and they said i needed a new turbo, so i asked them about a loaner car in the meantime while it gets fixed, they said no. they were on backorder for my turbo. So they told me to keep driving it while the part gets delivered. I did that. Eventually my turbo came in, brought my car in, they took it, put a new turbo in. When I went to get my car, I test drove it on the highway, speeding up slowly, and while doing that, I blew my engine. I lugged it back by going 20 mph back to the shop, luckily it was just off the highway. I brought it back and told them something happened, they checked it out and let me know that my engine, exhaust and all the needed components are broken. They finally decided to give me a loaner car, although I did have to fight for it a little bit at the end of my car getting finished, they wanted me to pay $1200. I refused as them having me drive my car while its broken is not a good idea and not my fault that it blew. I argued my side and got it down to $600. the next month on the 16th, i stopped to get gas and when i left the gas station, while speeding up, my car comes to an almost dead stop, so i pull it over, all lights on dash flashing, and car will not turn over. got it towed and they changed battery. a year later, my check engine light comes on again, I scan the code, it's the turbo. But it goes away. In January my temp sensor went out and my car said it was overheating as I was driving on the highway with no dash lights. 13th of february, my engine light came on while on my way home. I brought it to a local small shop Where they told me I need a new turbo again.

This 2019 Chevrolet Trax has had the same dangerous and expensive problem twice: In 2022, when the car had just over 35,000 miles, it started to lose acceleration, especially at highway speeds, slowing it to a dangerously slow pace in traffic. At a later time, the check engine light came on. Culver City Chevrolet replaced the turbo charger under warranty. In late January and early February, 2026, after only about 25,000 miles of use since the repair, the car exhibited similar failure to accelerate on the highway and in local traffic and the check engine light came on. It requires a new turbocharger again at a cost of approximately $3,500. The 2019 Chevrolet Trax is not trustworthy for safety with this recurring issue.

Bought 6/17/2023 with 81k miles (1.4L turbo). By ~7/1/2023 it ran rough and hesitated after refueling. Firestone (Brick, NJ, 7/5/2023 at 82,090 miles) said radiator leaking; keep topping off; noted open Chevy “special coverage” bulletin. Over ~2 years kept adding coolant (high consumption). Rough running worsened. Lester Glenn Chevy (Toms River, NJ, 10/20/2025 at 122,815 miles) replaced the evaporative emissions purge valve under special coverage N212338400; fixed post-refuel roughness but not overall rough running. Regular oil changes; last 10/1/2025 at 121,872 miles. Codes then: P0171, P0299, P0300, P0442, P0449, P0496. On 11/27/2025, at ~60 mph uphill on the Garden State Parkway, engine shook, dash showed “Engine Power Reduced/Service StabiliTrak” (CEL blinking), lost acceleration. Pulled over and towed; white smoke at tailpipe. Tow driver suspected coolant ingestion/head-gasket failure needing engine replacement. Odometer: 124,180. Traded in on 11/29/2025 at Automotive Avenues (Wall, NJ); no manufacturer/police/insurance inspection.

Started my car and it made a noise that didnt sound good. Took it to Van Chevrolet and they said it was my turbo. My car is under 100,000 miles, 2019, and giving the code that should qualify it on the recall list. They are trying to charge me 4000 to fix and have not given a rental which is about to make me lose everything.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the connector for the A/C unit had failed and needed to be replaced. The independent mechanic became aware that the wire for the A/C unit was burned, causing the A/C unit to malfunction. The A/C resistor, connector, and A/C blower motor were replaced. The contact stated that the resistor and connector had been burned 3 times and needed to be replaced again. The failure persisted, and the A/C unit continued releasing the burning odor. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and opened a case. The manufacturer referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was 71,200.

The turbocharger in this vehicle cracked at around 50,000 miles and my mechanic predicts it will happen again after another 50,000. This makes the vehicle unable to accelerate at unpredictable times, making the safety of the driver of the vehicle, as well as others on the road, compromised. My mechanic believes this is a common problem with GM vehicles of this engine size. Please advise. Thank you.

Turbocharger was replaced in October 2024. Now it is bad again as confirmed by the dealership. Check engine light was on. They had it in their repair shop and did a diagnostic test. Car stalled in the middle of the highway. The 2017 & 2018 Trax with the same engine have a recall for the turbocharger. The dealership would not honor the parts warranty because they said it was low on oil. No check oil light came on.

ODI #11663664POWER TRAIN,ENGINE

October 2024 the turbocharger was replaced. A few weeks ago check engine light came on. Bad turbocharger again while I was on a highway the car stopped running. Dealer said they will not replace it under the parts warranty. They said it was 3 quarts low on oil and I need to show receipts for last 3 oil changes. From previous times there they knew my son is a mechanic & did oil changes. They wanted me to call my son to ask him how much oil he put in after looking online it is a very common problem with the Chevy turbochargers. It will but an excessive amount of oil and cause it to be black and sludgy. I emailed the general manager. He never responded. I also filed a complaint with GM and consumer protection. When they replaced it in October it was still under the extended warranty. It is now over the 100,000 miles. However, I think a turbocharger should last more than 6 months. I could have been killed on the highway while broken down due to a part they know is defective. Instead they treated me like trash. It is not the first time they have done this to me. The car already has a new radiator, transmission, faulty turbocharger, and something with the valves was fixed. The car is a lemon. I just want them to be held accountable since they know this is a common occurrence with the Chevy turbochargers

Then some days passed and my vehicle started to slow down drastically on a highway (speed limit of 65) and my car would struggle to accelerate and so I was forced to switch from the middle lanes on the left to the lane all the way in the right, it was very difficult to do so as cars were passing me at high speeds. My car was struggling to accelerate and the engine started running rough. The engine light then came on. So I got it checked ant a local service center and I was told my turbocharger had to be replaced as it malfunctioned somehow. I can’t drive my car as it would be traveling way below the speed limit. I did not bring it to my dealer yet.

The infotainment screen has done this to me twice now, once at the end of June 2023 and just on July 8, 2023. I have had issues with the infotainment center before but heard nothing back about it. I took my car to the dealership and showed them the pictures of what is going on with my screen and they said it may need a new touchscreen, my car is only 4yrs old!! The issues with the car happen when attempting to go over 40mph. After maybe 10-15min of driving, if attempting to go over 40mph, the car starts making a clinking sound, a lot of exhaust smoke comes out the back and there is a general inability to accelerate without the engine sputtering which even happened at lower speeds once it has already started to happen. The check engine light come on when this occurs. Our safety does seem to be at risk as we cannot seem to keep up with traffic speeds and would likely cause an accident if we remain on the road while the car is exhibiting these conditions. After I told the dealership about how long in driving it takes to recreate the problem, the dealership that currently holds the car(Jennings Chevrolet in Glenview, IL) were able to reproduce the problem. My parents and I went on Feb 16th, 2023 to Napleton Hyundai in Glenview and bought the car used and after 2 days of driving, my parents were having issues with the car and being able to accelerate. At the time it was diagnosed as a catalytic converter and flex pipe problem. Those items were backordered and were not able to be replaced until 2 months after our original complaint. During those 2 months of waiting, my parents were instructed not to take the highway and not to exceed 40mph. Upon getting the car back on April 26th, it took merely 4-5 more days for the problems to come back again. We also found that on Dec 17th, 2022, the previous owner took the car in with the same problems and after getting an estimate, declined service and took the car back Dec 28th, 2022. The vehicle has been looked at by Napleton Hyundai in Glenview, Jennings Chevy in Glenview and prior to our ownership, Anderson Chevy in Chicago. Anytime the vehicle exhibits the above mentioned problems, the check engine light does come on and usually in addition to the issues listed above, the car seems to be low/out of oil. At this time, we are told the cars issue is the turbo.

Just financed this car on the 18th of February the engine light is constantly coming on and staying on now also the stable light keeps popping on the car is sputtering and shaking and can barely get up speed when driving it's making a funny noise

ODI #11511236ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Upon acceleration above 40 mph, the car starts studdering with little power on acceleration. Releasing and pressing the accelerator until it starts picking up speed. This behavior worsened as the day went on. I had to put my emergency flashers on, while entering the highway ramp. Then it will pick up speed, just not rapidly as normal behavior on the accelerator. The stabletrax light came on, the engine light, tread lights. Then it drives normal until the next time.

The stable link light came on with the engine light and showed the car symbol with tread lines. This is the second time the stable link came on since my ownership. On accelerating the gas pedal, the car starts to studder, and the engine will not pick up speed on the highway. So cars are held up behind you, until it accelerates slowly to the highway speed limit. Between 44mph it starts studdering of power. It feels like a safety issue. It has started studdering at 35mph. I checked for recalls and found a lot of Chevys have this issue, but a different make and model.

Air conditioning compressor failed, took to a GM dealership service center and was informed that the AC compressor failed at a weld joint, most likely due to an improper weld. This happened during the intense heat wave this summer (Tennessee Summer 2022) and my air conditioning failed, causing incredibly hot climate conditions in the car, which I had no substitute that I could drive during 100 degree weather. Symptoms had occurred previously, beginning as soon as I purchased the vehicle (but did not realize it was a symptom until the unit went out.) I smelled a chemical smell anytime the air conditioner was running and just believed it to be a normal occurrence, as well as any time I went a long distance using the ac, it would stop working. I brought this to a dealership but they were unable to recreate the problem due to the length of time that it took for the problem to occur while driving, so was never completely investigated. The air conditioning completely failed on a long distance drive from Memphis, TN, to Houston, TX.

Yesterday at the 10 week mark of the odor occurring on a daily basis of using the heater blower fan it stopped working leaving no option to get any heat in the vehicle cabin. I was told it was when the car was turned sharply. I have talked to several people and I was told that did not sound right. A sharp turn should not make the frame crack. I wanted the frame changed. They said they would weld it and it supposedly be good as new. I do not feel comfortable driving a vehicle with a welded frame. I think it is a safety risk for me or anyone else to drive it. I WAS TRAVELING IN MY CAR ON THE FREEWAY. TRAFFIC CAME TO A DECELERATION VERY QUICKLY AND SUDDENLY. I WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN IN TIME TO AVOID THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, HOWEVER I WAS STRUCK FROM BEHIND. THE DRIVER BEHIND ME MUST HAVE SWERVED ALSO TO TRY TO AVOID HITTING ME DIRECTLY FROM BEHIND. SHE HIT MY REAR DRIVER SIDE. THIS ACTION CAUSED MY CONTROL ARM, STRUT TOWER, ROTOR, WHEEL AND ALL OTHER ASSOCIATED PARTS TO DETACH FROM THE VEHICLE. THIS ALSO CONSEQUENTIALLY CAUSED THE BRAKE HOSE TO BE RIPPED FROM THE ASSEMBLY RESULTING IN POOR BRAKE PRESSURE. I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SHOULDER WITH HYDRAULIC BRAKES ALONG WITH THE USE OF MY EMERGENCY BRAKE. VERY MINOR INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED FROM THIS INCIDENT, HOWEVER, THE SITUATION COULD HAVE RESULTED IN SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH. I HAVE NOT EXISTING RECALLS FOR THE PARTS THAT FAILED, HOWEVER, THERE IS A RECALL ON THE FRONT CONTROL ARMS ON THIS VEHICLE.

I OWN A 2019 CHEVOLET TRAX...I HAVE TAKEN IT BACK THREE TIME FOR THE SHREAKING SOUND EVERY TIME I GO IN THE DRIVE WAY AND RIDE ON THE STREET. I TOOK A SALEMAN WITH ME ON THE RIDE AND HE HEARD IT.. BUT WHEN HE TOLD ME TO GO TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THEY CLAIM THEY DIDN'T HERE IT...EVEN WHEN A TECHNICIAN WENT WITH ME HE SAID HE DIDN'T HERE IT BUT I DID...I ASK HIM DO HE WANT TO DRIVE THE CAR, BECAUSE IT WAS COMMING FROM THE DRIVER SIDE, HE DIDN'T WANT TO..WE WENT BACK AND HE TOLD THEM HE DID'T HERE ANYTHING. BUT YET THE SALENAN HEARD IT...THE NOISE GET ON MY NERVE SO I TURN THE RADIO UP NOT TO HERE IT. I TRADED THAT CAR FROM A 2017 RAX TO A 2019 TRAX, I WOULD NOT REALIZE I WOULD HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM..THE 2017 WAS NEW JUST LIKE THE 2019, BUT THEY FOUND OUT ON THE NEW 2017 IT WAS THE STRUTS THAT WAS BAD...I REALLY HATE THAT CAR..THE 2019 WAS VALUE AT 10,000 DOLLAR WHEN I TRIES TO TRADE IT END. AND I OWE 24,000.00. IT HAVE 12,000 MILE ON IT. IT DON'T DRIVE SMOOTH AT ALL. IT SHAKE SOMETIME WHEN I AM ON THE HIGHWAY..I KNOW IT HAVE A RECALL ON IT. BUT OF COURSE THEY SAID MIND WASN'T AFFECTED. BUT THAT NOISE I HEAR IS COMMING FROM THAT PART THEY CHECK ON...I TOLD THE SALEMAN, I GUESS THE NOISE OR WHATEVER I AM HEARING GOT TO GET WORST LIKE THE OTHER TRAX THAT I HAD....BEFORE THEY DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT...IT IS HARD TO TRADE IN BECAUSE I AM UPSIDE DOWN ON IT. THAT TO MUCH OF A DIFFERENT TO. PUT ON ANOTHER CAR...THE CAR IS ALWAY IN MOTION. I AM REALLY SCARE THE CAR IS GOING TO BREAK DOWN ON DRIVER SIDE WHERE I HEAR THE NOISE..IF THE 2017 HAD STRUT PROBLEMS. THIS 2019 MIGHT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM

I PURCHASED A NEW 2019 CHEVY TRAX AFTER TRADING IN MY 2016 TRAX. I HAD BEEN DRIVING IT FOR ABOUT TWO WEEKS WHEN MY RADIO, TURN SIGNAL, PHONE CALLS AND ONSTAR (NOT SURE ABOUT BACK UP CAMERA) WAS AFFECTED BY SOME GLITCH. THE SOUND WENT AWAY FROM MY TURN SIGNAL, ALL THE RADIO CHANNELS, NO SOUND BUT COULD RECEIVE PHONE CALLS AND TRIED TO CALL ONSTAR PER SALES REP TO DO A DIAGNOSIS BUT THE CALL COULD NOT BE HEARD. THE ONSTAR CALL COULD NOT BE DISCONNECTED. THE EVENTUAL FIX TO THIS WAS I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THE SALES REP DID A FACTORY RESET IN THE SETTINGS. THIS BROUGHT IT BACK. I HAD A SIMILAR ISSUE IN MY 2016 TRAX THAT BLACKED OUT THE SCREEN COMPLETELY AND TOOK AWAY ANY SOUND FROM IT AND MY SIGNAL. IT EVENTUALLY CAME BACK AFTER A SHOP PLAYED AROUND WITH IT. SECOND ISSUE WHICH FELL UNDER A WARRANTY REPAIR WAS THAT I NOTICED NOT LONG AFTER BUYING THAT THERE WAS A HIGH PITCHED SQUEAL COMING FROM MY DRIVERS SEAT WHEN STOPPING AND HITTING BUMPS. I THOUGHT AT FIRST THE SPRINGS NEEDED BREAKING IN. IT ENDED UP BEING THE BOLT AT THE BACK RIGHT OF THE SEAT THAT ATTACHED IT TO THE FLOOR. COME TO FIND OUT IT WAS CROOKED AND COMPLETELY STRIPPED WHICH WAS CAUSING THE SEAT TO BOUNCE AROUND. IT WAS ALSO FOUND OUT DURING REPAIR THAT A SECOND BOLT WAS STARTING TO DO THE SAME THING. THIS WAS A BRAND NEW VEHICLE STRAIGHT FROM THE FACTORY. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE DEPT THAT VEHICLES FROM THE FACTORY AREN'T STATE INSPECTED. THIS SEEMS TO BE AN UNSAFE METHOD.

THE DEALERSHIP PLILIPS CHEVROLET IS SAYING THE DIAGNOSTIC TESTS DID NOT DETECT A PROBLEM. S I JUST IMAGINED THE TERRIFYING ORDEALS THAT I ENCOUNTERED. I NOW HAVE TO GO BACK AND GET THIS CAR AND DRIVE IT BRILL IT HAPPENS AGAIN. THE WEATHER IS ABOUT TO GET BAD SO WHAT IF IT HAPPENS AND PUTTING THE CAR IN DRIVE DOES NOT STOP IT.
