Deferred Failure Risk

Components and defects approaching or past their known service milestones

82/100
Critical Deferred Risk
Critical deferred failure risk — 4 safety-critical or high-cost components are past their service interval. Without immediate attention, repair costs will compound significantly.
No odometer data on record. Mileage is estimated at ~132,000 mi based on average annual driving. Items marked EST. OVERDUE may already be due — verify service history with the seller. Items marked OVERDUE are confirmed past-due based on vehicle age alone.
EST. OVERDUECriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Service interval: 10 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Timing Chain Tensioner immediately — already past the 120,000 mi / 10 yr interval
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
EST. OVERDUECriticalWater Pump
Service interval: 8 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Water Pump immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 8 yr interval
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
EST. OVERDUEHighTransmission Fluid / Service
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Transmission Fluid / Service immediately — already past the 60,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
EST. OVERDUEHighCoolant Flush
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Coolant Flush immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
EST. OVERDUEModerateSpark Plugs (iridium/platinum)
Service interval: 8 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Spark Plugs (iridium/platinum) immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 8 yr interval
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
EST. OVERDUEModerateFuel Injectors
Service interval: 10 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Fuel Injectors immediately — already past the 120,000 mi / 10 yr interval
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.

The painting on my 2015 Buick Encore started peeling about 2 years ago and has continued to worsen, and I am concerned about the longevity and overall appearance of my vehicle. As a loyal customer, I expect the paint job to last for a reasonable amount of time, and I believe this issue should be addressed by the manufacturer. I would like to request that Buick fixes this issue free of charge. I understand that my vehicle is no longer under warranty. This is particularly concerning as the peeling paint is affecting the resale value of my car, and I would like to maintain its value as much as possible. I understand that paint issues can occur, and I appreciate that this is not necessarily a reflection on the overall quality of the vehicle. However, I am requesting that Buick take responsibility for this issue and repair the paint free of charge. I believe that the paint peeling issue is covered under the vehicle's warranty, and I hope that I am hopeful that Buick will make every effort to keep this cost to a minimum and to ensure that I am not left out of pocket for a problem that is beyond my control.

My check engine light came on so I took it to a repair shop. They put it on their Diagnostic System Check Computer and the code #PO299 came up. After further inspection and investigation, the failed part is the Turbocharger- A1140104N. This vehicle's, vin number, model year and mileage qualifies it for warranty replacement and labor for the faulty part. However, because it is a Buick and not a Chevy the dealership is not authorizing the repair, even though it is the exact same system and part that is being replaced in the Chevy models. Without this part functioning properly, it affects performance and the car's ability to accelerate when needed which makes it a hazard to drive if you should need to accelerate quickly.

While at a stoplight, my buick encore's power steering just stopped working. I was only able to turn the steering wheel with great effort. The car would not go in reverse, although when pressing on the accelerator in reverse, the engine would rev. Shifting from drive to reverse also caused the car to jolt. The car is available for inspection. This has happened previously in fall of 2021, and the same exact thing happened, but this time while I was driving through an intersection. I was unable to steer and ran into a curb. My safety and safety of others was put at risk because I could have hit another driver or pedestrian The car has been inspected by a Triple A approved mechanic twice (once in 2021 and once now), and they have not found any problems with the car. Power steering failed when driving. I had another passenger with me and when avoiding a pothole in the road, the car went crazy and it took all I could to control the vehicle and NOT crash into anyone or another car! I am having nightmares of what could have happened to me and my passenger. On the next day, I tried to start my vehicle and the steeling wheel was locked. I had it towed to VIP near me. They did a diagnosis on my vehicle and claim that I need a new steeling column and the circuit board. They did further research and found that the 2015 Buick Encores have had a recall on the steering. They then mentioned that there was nothing more they could do and they advised me NOT to drive the vehicle as it was UNSAFE. I then had the vehicle towed to a dealer. The dealer (Jacks Chevrolet) claims that my car's VIN isn't included in the recall. My question is if my vehicle demonstrates the same characteristics, WHY isn't it part of the recall? My car is UNSAFE to drive! Jack’s Chevrolet in Saco performed a diagnosis, and the issue was with the battery. From what the contact was told, the power steering is electric, and the battery had tested bad (bad cell). And they stated the power steering is working properly. The contact stated after one event of driving the vehicle after the repair, the vehicle is again demonstrating an unreasonable risk to safety. The steering wheel is locked, and the steering is uncontrolled.

ODI #11549826ENGINE

It seems like the 2015 Buick Encores are having a lot of the same issues. I do not see a recall for any of these issues. 1. loss of power when trying to accelerate. This has almost caused an accident for me. I had plenty of time to pull out, but my car wouldn't speed up. Thankfully the car coming up noticed I was having issues and slowed down. This also may affect the performance and fuel efficiency of the vehicle. No warning lights came on. It eventually corrected itself and I was able to accelerate. This has been an ongoing issue. Nobody seems to know what is causing this or how to fix it. 2. I start my car and put it into gear, and it shakes like it wants to stall. I quickly put it back into park and wait a few minutes before putting it back into gear. It also does this while I am waiting at lights at intersections. That is very concerning because if i stall mid intersection this could cause and accident and or injury to me or other motorists. No lights appear when this happens. Again, nobody knows why it does this or how to correct it. 3. Back of my car stared chipping paint for no reason. There was no trauma to cause this to occur. Apparently, this is another common issue with this car. I've read that there have been lawsuits against the company for using paint similar to what this is doing. 3. I had to replace my engine under two years of having it. It was still under warranty at the time, but I hadn't had the car very long at all.

The turbocharger on my car is failing and had a verified check engine light code PO299. The car is a 2015 with low miles, only 53k. This is an obvious manufacturer defect/defective product with an estimated cost of $1500.00 to replace, according to an ASE independent auto shop I use for all my vehicles. The car is unfortunately not under any warranty anymore, to my knowledge. There is no recall on this part but online on Buick forums and other credible sites, you will find owners of the same exact car reporting independently, the same failing part issues. I am the second owner of this car and bought it used in 2021 from Carmax. Since then, I have spent $$$ to fix random necessary repairs that are defects of the car but not on recall. Recently, the ac went out and that was over $500 alone. Prior to that an 02 sensor and sparkplug went out, etc. I want GM to reimburse me for the repair cost of the failing turbocharger on this low mileage vehicle as it is without a doubt, a manufacturer defect needing repair to prevent the engine from failure and a total loss! I contacted a GM/Buick agent and formal complaint and request for reimbursement. I am now waiting for up to two days for a "senior agent," to contact me back and discuss further options, if any. Until then, I am without a car with two kids at home and this defect is unsafe and a financial burden to me and my family. This is a known issue on this vehicle model and should be covered under a recall from GM!

I've had my car for 3 years. I've always kept up with it's maintenance. My engine/head gasket are blown and I found out this is a common issue with this car. The airbags also dont recognize when there are passengers in the car. I started my car up one morning in September and all of my lights started flashing. I immediately turned it off and towed it to my mechanic to find out that it pretty much has everything wrong with it. My car is barely above 80k

We have had problems with the air bags since the car was new. The SRS light would come on for a couple months then go off. It says it has a problem with the passenger presence module. Never had a recall but the dealer said that when we took it in for an oil change they updated the firmware on the air bag system. It never did work, it would sometimes work then not work. I took it back a few weeks ago and told them it still isn't right and I said since it is a safety issue they should cover it. They told me that since Ohio doesn't have auto inspections that they are not responsibile for taking care of it and I was looking at over 1000 to repair. That pissed me off so I took my car and left. I am taking it to a independent garage. I have had lots of problems eith this car and only have 42000 on it now. My last GM, next will be Toyota/

ON 4/25/18 WAS TRAVELING A COUPLE OF HOURS OUT OF TOWN FOR A MEETING. WHILE ACCELERATING (UP AN INCLINE) FROM A HWY WORK ZONE OF 50 MPH, I TEMPORARILY LOST: ALL DIAL READINGS, POWER STEERING AND ENGINE SOUNDED STUCK IN A LOWER GEAR. A FEW SECONDS LATER, REGAINED EVERYTHING, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND ON STAR PINGED TRANSMISSION ERROR/ TAKE IN FOR SERVICE WITHIN 1 DAY. DEALERSHIP RECEIVED U0073 CODE AND IDENTIFIED 2 LEAKS FROM AIR CONDITIONER. THEY SUSPECTED THE LEAKS WERE AFFECTING THE SENSORS. ON 5/5/18, WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, JUST 1 MILE FROM LEAVING HOME - THE SAME THING HAPPENED AS ABOVE + TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON TEMPORARILY WITH POWER STEERING LIGHT. UPON PULLING OFF THE ROAD, TURNING THE CAR OFF, SITTING A MINUTE AND RESTARTING, EVERYTHING CAME BACK AND ONLY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT LIT. THE DEALERSHIP (WHO HAVE FABULOUS CUSTOMER SERVICE) IDENTIFIED A DIFFERENT SET OF CODES AND ENDED UP REPLACING "THE BRAINS" OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. ON 5/9/18, DRIVING 35 MPH DOWN A SLIGHT DECLINE- AGAIN LOST ALL DIAL GAUGES, POWER STEERING, TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON AND TRANSMISSION SEEMED TO BE STUCK IN LOW GEAR. THIS CONDITION CONTINUED FOR A NUMBER OF MINUTES. I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT ON A HILL (NO FUN TO COAX THE CAR UP), TURNED THE CAR OFF, TURNED IT ON, AND STILL POWER STEERING, TRANSMISSION AND GAUGES AREN'T WORKING RIGHT. SINCE HOME WAS 1 MILE AWAY, I HEADED THAT DIRECTION AND AFTER 1/2 MILE EVERYTHING RESOLVED + CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BACK ON. THE DRIVE THAT NIGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP WAS SPECIAL. 50% OF THE TIME THE POWER STEERING WAS ON AND OFF ALONG WITH INABILITY TO ACCELERATE, ESPECIALLY UP HILL. THIS TIME 5 DIFFERENT ELECTRICAL CODES WERE IDENTIFIED. SO FAR, DEALERSHIP HAS RECHARGED THE BATTERY AND ARE DRIVING THE HECK OUT OF IT TO SEE IF MORE CODES POP UP. THEY DO NOT YET FEEL IT'S FIXED. WAS THERE A BAD BATCH OF 2015 ENCORES?

THE CAR HAD BEEN PARKED IN AN UNHEATED GARAGE FOR MORE THAN 24 HOURS. I STARTED IT, PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, AND PUT IT IN GEAR (R). THE CAR LUNGED BACK AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. MY FOOT WAS STILL ON THE BRAKE. TO AVOID HITTING A VEHICLE BEHIND IT IN THE DRIVEWAY, I SHIFTED TO DRIVE (D) AND THE CAR IMMEDIATELY STARTED FORWARD STILL AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. THE BRAKES DID NOT SLOW THE CAR DOWN. I BUMPED THE FRONT WALL OF THE GARAGE AND AGAIN SHIFTED INTO R. THE CAR STARTED MOVING BACK AGAIN AND THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK. I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND THE CAR BEGAN SLOWING AND CAME TO A STOP AFTER BUMPING THE VEHICLE ABOUT 20 FEET BEHIND IT. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL THE WHOLE TIME. I CHECKED FOR OBSTRUCTIONS AROUND THE BRAKE PEDAL AND FOUND NONE. AFTERWARD, WHEN I STARTED THE CAR AGAIN, IT DROVE NORMALLY WITHOUT TROUBLE. THERE WAS NO APPARENT DAMAGE TO THE CAR AS A RESULT OF EITHER COLLISION BUT THE GARAGE WALL SUFFERED SOME MINOR DAMAGE.

OUR CAR WAS BARLEY MOVING AS WE MADE DROVE IT INTO OUR DRIVEWAY. WE HAD LOST ALL ACCELERATION. OUR CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP ON 9/13 . WE WERE TOLD WE WERE "JUST OVER THE WARRANTY MILEAGE ALLOWED 70,000 AND HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR . WE ASKED GM TO CONTRIBUTE SINCE WE WERE BARLEY OVER THE WARRANTY MILEAGE ALLOWED".WE PICKED UP OUR CAR AFTER THE ORIGINAL TURBO WAS REPLACED ON 9/23 AND AGAIN THE CAR BEGAN MAKING NOISES ON THE CUESTA GRADE. AGAIN WE STARTED TO LOSE THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE AND HAD TO DRIVE THE HIGHWAY AT A LOW SPEED TO MAKE IT HOME WITH THE CAR MAKING TERRIBLE SOUNDS AND NOISES . THIS SECOND TURBO HAD FAILED . WE HAD THE CAR TOWED BACK TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP ON 9/24. AFTER ABOUT A WEEK THE DEALERSHIP CALLED AND EXPLAINED THEY HAD INSTALLED ANOTHER TURBO WHICH HAD FAILED AGAIN AND THEY WERE WAITING ON PARTS TO REPLACE IT WHICH WOULD BE THE 3RD TURBO TO BE INSTALLED IN OUR CAR BESIDES THE ORIGINAL ONE THE MANUFACTURER INSTALLED . EACH TIME THE DEALERSHIP STATED ADDITIONAL THINGS WERE HAPPENING TO THE CAR WHEN THE TURBO WAS "GOING OUT" .WE RECEIVED A CALL ON 10 /9 (OVER TWO WEEKS FROM THE TIME THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP) THAT THE TURBO WAS NOW REPAIRED AND WE COULD PICK UP THE CAR. WE ARE VERY CONCERNED FOR OUR SAFETY WITH THIS CAR. WHEN THE TURBO GOES OUT IT CAN CAUSE A WREAK SINCE WE HAVE TO TRAVEL ON THE HIGHWAY AND CUESTA GRADE AS WE LOSE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE.

1. THE VEHICLE ROLL BACKWARDS IN UNPREDICTABLE WAYS EVEN ON SMALL INCLINES WHEN FOOT IS TAKEN OFF THE BRAKES. AT TIMES VEHICLE WILL GO FORWARD AND AT OTHER TIMES IT WILL ROLL BACK ON THE EXACT SLOPE. WE WERE TOLD BY BUICK DEALERS THAT THE MANUFACTURER DOES NOT SEE THIS AS AN ISSUE. HOWEVER, BOTH MY WIFE AND I HAVE BEEN STARTLED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS IN WAYS THAT WE HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE. WE CONSIDER OURSELVES TO BE VERY SAFE DRIVERS AN HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR OVER 20 YEARS IN THE US WITH NO ACCIDENT CLAIMS. NONE OF THE VEHICLES WE HAVE OWNED OR DRIVEN HAD BEEN THIS DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, WE HAVE COME CLOSE TO HITTING STOPPED VEHICLES BEHIND US AT TRAFFIC SIGNALS. 2. IN ADDITION, REAR VISIBILITY THROUGH THE SMALL WINDOWS IS CHALLENGING WHICH IS FURTHER OBSTRUCTED BY COLUMNS. 3. ALSO, REAR VISIBILITY THROUGH THE REAR VIEW CAMERA IS POOR UNDER NORMAL DAYLIGHT CONDITIONS DUE TO THE POOR RESOLUTION. AS A RESULT OF THE ABOVE POINTS, IT'S VERY UNNERVING WHEN ONE IS CAUGHT ON THE DRIVER SEAT WITH THE VEHICLE MOVING BACKWARDS UNEXPECTEDLY. FINALLY, THE INEVITABLE HAPPENED. THE VEHICLE MET WITH AN ACCIDENT AS A RESULT OF THIS. THE VEHICLE WHICH USUALLY GOES FORWARD WITH FEET OFF ACCELERATOR ON A MILD SLOPED DRIVEWAY IN FRONT OF OUR HOUSE, ROLLED BACKWARDS IN THIS PARTICULAR INSTANCE. THE STARTLED DRIVER ERRED ON THE SIDE OF SAFETY BY PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL TO MOVE THE VEHICLE FORWARD SINCE THERE WERE CHILDREN PLAYING AROUND. HOWEVER, WITH LIMITED ROOM TO MANEUVER, THE VEHICLE ENDED UP HITTING OUR GARAGE DOOR. THE REPAIR HAS BEEN ESTIMATED AT $6000 +. $1500 FOR THE GARAGE DOOR. I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR AND MY LOCAL GMC BUICK DEALERSHIP TELLS ME THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE SENSOR BECAUSE THE MECHANIC THAT WORKED ON IT SAT IN IT AT 220LBS AND IT TURNED ON FOR HIM JUST FINE. PLUS THEY SAID THEY ARE RECEIVING NO ERROR CODES ON IT. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS VEHICLES AIR BAG WHEN AN AVERAGE SIZE PERSON WEIGHING OVER 130LBS CANNOT RIDE IN THE FRONT SEAT WITHOUT AIRBAG PROTECTION. THERE HAS TO BE A FIX TO THIS AS IT'S EXTREMELY DANGEROUS FOR A PASSENGER UNDER 200LBS TO RIDE IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT WHILE THE AIR BAG IS OFF! I DROVE SIDEWAYS UP AND THEN CONSEQUENTLY DOWN THE HILL AND CURVY ROAD, VEERING INTO THE OPPOSITE LANE MANY TIMES DURING THE DURATION OF MY DRIVE HOME. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO ONCOMING TRAFFIC, I TRIED TO STAY IN THE CENTER OF THE ROAD UNTIL I REACHED FLAT ROAD WITHOUT INCLINES, DIPS AND CURVES, WHEN I WAS ABLE TO SLIDE BACK INTO MY LANE. MY VEHICLE WAS CONSTANTLY PULLING ITSELF OFF THE ROAD AND HEADING TOWARDS THE GUARDRAILS. THE AWD DID NOT RECOVER AND I HAD NO CONTROL OVER MY VEHICLE. I JUST BARELY MANAGED TO GET THE VEHICLE UP THE LAST INCLINE AND INTO MY STREET/DRIVEWAY. THE NEXT MORNING, THE AWD WAS RESTORED. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THAT MY AWD DISABLED. THE FIRST TIME IT DISABLED WAS EARLIER THAT YEAR, APPROXIMATELY JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2016, DURING A SNOWSTORM ON MY MORNING COMMUTE UP THE SAME ROAD. EMERGENCY FLASIHING LIGHTS DID NOT WORK GMC DEALER TOLD US A WELD ON THE BATTERY FAILED CAUSING BATTERY WIRE TO SHORT. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY SOME POWER WORKED, BUT THERE SHOULD BE A BACKUP SOURCE FOR EMERGENCY FLASHING LIGHTS.

ODI #10745133SERVICE BRAKES

ALMOST EVERY DAY THE 1 ST & 2 ND TIME THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED THERE IS A GRINDING NOISE & IT FEELS LIKE THE BRAKES ARE GRABBING. ON MY CAR IT SEEMS TO BE COMING FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE.MY CAR PARKS IN THE GARAGE. 1 ST TIME DEALER SAID THERE WAS A BIT OF RUST ON THE CALIPERS THEY CLEANED THEM UP..NEXT MORNING SAME THING..2 ND TIME BACK TO DEALER THEY SAID IT'S PROBABLY CONDENSATION & IT'S ALWAYS GOING TO BE THAT WAY..MY RESPONSE WAS THAT'S UNACCEPTABLE & I WILL CONTINUE TO BRING MY CAR BACK TILL ITS FIXED.THEY LATER TOLD ME THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THIS PROB..GM IS MONITORING & WORKING ON THE FIX.

ODI #10723516SERVICE BRAKES

NEW BUICK 2015 ENCORE 1. APPYING BRAKES WHEN BACKING OUT OF GARAGE CREATES A SHRILL SQUEAL. 2. WHEN SLOWING FOR THE STOP SIGN AT THE END OF THE STREET, APPLYING BRAKES MAKES A MOANING SOUND AND SLIGHT VIBRATION. 3. WHEN I APPLY BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AT ABOUT 5 MPH SUCH AS STOPPING AT AN INTERSECTION, THE BRAKES 'GRAB' RATHER THAN SLOWING SMOOTHLY. ALL PROBLEMS HAPPEN IN THE MORNING AFTER THE CAR HAS SET OVERNIGHT, AND THEY USUALLY GO AWAY AFTER DRIVING ENOUGH TO USE THE BRAKES A NUMBER OF TIMES. LAST WEEK I DROVE IN A HARD RAIN FOR 20-30 MINUTES GETTING HOME. PARKED CAR OVERNIGHT. BRAKE WORKED WITHOUT THE ABOVE PROBLEMS FOR THE NEXT TWO DAYS, THEN STARTED AGAIN. DEALER SAYS THEY (GM) ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM ON SOME 2015 ENCORES AND ARE "WORKING ON IT" BUT IT IS SAFE, AND MIGHT BE A FEW MONTHS BEFORE A FIX.

Chart Analysis

The blue line shows 122 total NHTSA complaints filed over 12 years, with the worst year being 2019 (17 complaints).

The amber reliability line shows an improving trend — scores have risen from the earlier years toward 51/100 more recently, suggesting the most serious issues are older and may have been addressed through repairs or recalls.

The recalls (red dashed lines) followed the first complaints by 1 year — a typical response window; neither unusually fast nor a pattern of denial.

Red dots on the amber line flag 4 years (2017, 2018, 2020, 2021) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
