The "Engine Maintenance Required" signal keeps coming on when I start my vehicle and the A/C is on. It is a fault of a code for the bypass coolant valve, which is in perfect condition. I just took my vehicle for the regular maintenance over the weekend. The regular "Maintenance Required" signal went off after picking it up. After an hour or two, the "Engine" signal reappeared. This is a common issue in the Toyota's and I shouldn't have to be financially responsible for a faulty code.

I am writing to formally report a serious safety concern regarding my vehicle’s airbag system following a recent accident. On April 22, 2026, I was involved in a significant collision while driving my Toyota Corolla 2022. The impact was severe enough that the other vehicle involved deployed its airbags. However, despite the force of the crash, the airbags in my vehicle did not deploy. I am extremely concerned that the airbag system may have failed to function as designed. Given that airbags are a critical safety feature intended to protect occupants in high-impact collisions, this raises serious questions about the reliability and safety of my vehicle.

The component that failed is the coolant bypass valve, which is part of the engine cooling system. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The issue was first indicated by an "Engine Maintenance Required" warning message that appeared on the dashboard. No prior symptoms were noticeable before the warning appeared. The warning came on suddenly during normal driving conditions. This failure poses a potential safety risk because the coolant bypass valve regulates engine temperature. If it malfunctions, it may lead to improper engine cooling, overheating, reduced engine performance, or sudden breakdown while driving. This could increase the risk of being stranded in traffic or experiencing a hazardous situation on the road. The problem has been diagnosed and confirmed by an authorized Toyota dealership, which identified the coolant bypass valve as failed and in need of replacement. The dealership provided a repair estimate of $775 prior to taxes and fees. The manager shared that it would be around $890+ after it is all calculated. The vehicle has not been involved in any accident related to this issue, but the malfunction was verified through dealer inspection. No police or insurance reports were filed, as this was a mechanical failure. Based on personal research, this appears to be a widespread issue affecting similar Toyota vehicles, including other Corollas and RAV4 models, where the same component has failed under similar conditions. In some cases, repairs have been covered by the manufacturer, indicating awareness of the issue. There are many groups on Facebook and Reddit where customers with the same make and model 2022 Toyota Corolla SE have had the same issue after 3 years of having the vehicle. In summary, while driving under normal conditions, the warning message appeared without prior indication. The dealership later confirmed that the coolant bypass valve had failed and required replacement.

Hello, on October 14th 2024 I reached out to Toyota over a “engine maintenance required” message on my dash along with a check engine light. I took it to the local toyota dealership in Downey CA. After testing the Engine coolant bypass valve B Control circuit high failed. Toyota replaced the valve on October 21st 2024. Issuing me a 1year/12,000 mile warranty. On Thursday January 15th 2026 the drive start control malfunction warning light along with a P26AE error code displayed. Upon testing the engine coolant bypass valve B control circuit high failed again. Speaking with Toyota my vehicle VIN is not part of the CSP service campaign they have for 19-23 Corolla models. I spoke with Toyota Corporate and they couldn’t/wouldn’t help. This is a severe safety risk as the valve failed at a moments notice with no warning or symptoms. Additionally it can lead to engine stall and catastrophic damage, risking other drivers if engine loses power. This is an ongoing and recurring issue with RAV4/Corolla/Cross models and Toyota is facing a lawsuit here in California from other drivers with the same problem. I would like for my VIN to be added to the safety recall as Toyota Knowingly replaced the Valve with the same defective part per the technician who fixed my vehicle the first time who warned me this was going to happen again. Thank you for your time and assistance in this matter.

Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I am submitting this email to formally report a potential vehicle safety defect involving my 2022 Toyota Corolla. Vehicle information: - Make/Model: 2022 Toyota Corolla - In-service date: 08/18/2022 My vehicle sustained significant wiring damage caused by rodents. Toyota has denied warranty and financial assistance, characterizing the issue as an “outside influence.” However, according to what I read online, modern vehicles —including Toyota models—use soy-based or bio-based wiring insulation, which is widely documented to attract rodents. The damage affected critical electrical wiring, creating potential safety hazards including loss of vehicle function and increased fire risk. This is not merely cosmetic damage but impacts essential vehicle systems. The foreseeability of rodent attraction due to wiring materials raises concerns of a design-related safety defect and failure to adequately warn consumers. Toyota has stated there are no recalls or customer support programs addressing this issue, despite recurring reports from vehicle owners nationwide. I respectfully request that NHTSA review this matter as a potential safety defect and consider whether further investigation is warranted. Thank you for your attention to this safety concern. Sincerely,

2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Touchscreen/Infotainment Display randomly shut down while driving without warning and no longer functions. This could not be reset by holding the power button or disconnecting the vehicle battery. The backup camera still works, and the radio can be heard when the power button is pressed, but the display remains on a black screen and none of the controls on the steering wheel or headunit work. At night, the lights on the buttons for the multimedia display turn on and off every 10 seconds which is extremely distracting and has the potential to cause an accident. This defective part serves as a safety issue, as this is where critical maintenance and hybrid battery power related errors displayed. In addition there are many critical controls locked behind the screen related to door locks, hybrid battery usage, and other vehicle controls, as well as personal data that may now be at risk and unable to be able to be deleted. Vehicle was inspected by a Lia Toyota of Rockland Dealership Service department and determined to be a faulty display, requiring a compete unit replacement. The quoted cost is $2500, and despite my car having only 35500 miles, this is not covered under any warranty due to being outside the 36 month time window. I almost rolled into the car in front of me. At first, I thought maybe it was just me or the shoes but then I noticed the clutch felt like it was getting stuck while pressed. When I tried changing gears, it made a metal-on-metal scratching noise. When I was coming to a stop, the car wouldn’t slow down properly because the clutch wasn’t responding. I couldn’t press it in, and since there were pedestrians nearby, I had to slow the car down by shifting gears without using the clutch and pedestrians got anxious and mad around me because they had to speed up to the safe side, pulled to the side and checked the pedal, thinking maybe something was in the way, but when I pumped it a few times, it started working again. for a moment. Then at another red light, the clutch pedal went soft and wouldn’t engage again. I couldn’t move the car. Eventually, it turned off, and I managed to get it into first gear and restart it, but the car jumped forward as soon as it started. I kept pressing gas and going, but I couldn’t shift into second gear anymore. Traffic was building up and I barely made it to a safe spot near a crosswalk. It felt unsafe to drive. Toyota defectively designed and/or manufactured coolant bypass valves ("the Defect") that prematurely fail. When the Defect manifests, coolant leaks out of the closed-loop coolant system. This adversely impacts the ability of the coolant system to properly regulate the temperature of the engine, and can lead to engine overheating, stalling, increased emissions and catastrophic engine failure. In addition, the leaking coolant can leak into the surrounding engine components, including the electrical system, and damage those components. The leaking coolant can also corrode the sensor on the coolant bypass valve, which causes it to remain stuck in the "open" or "closed" position and thus impedes its ability to properly direct coolant throughout the engine, thereby impeding the ability of the engine to operate within the appropriate parameters. When the Defect manifests, it also causes a message to appear on the dashboard over the speedometer, which states: "Engine Maintenance Required" and "Visit Your Dealer." The message cannot be dismissed or otherwise removed from the dash of the Class Vehicle by the operator of the Class vehicle, and instead must be brought to a dealership or to a mechanic. The message is distracting and obscures a significant portion of the speedometer. blocks other important, safety-related messages that are intended to display in the same area of the dash occupied by the message. Cars system reads “engine maintenance required” due to coolant bypass valve, car is only at 42,000 (6,000 miles past warranty) was told it’s not covered under powertrain warranty and was charged almost $1000 to get it fixed

When traveling via highway at approximately 60 MPH, the right front tire struck a small pothole. The vehicle continued driving normally until stopping at a light. Thereafter, the front right wheel started making rhythmic vibration noises while vibrating extensively, transferring to the steering wheel. Upon visual inspection, nothing appeared wrong. After driving several miles, the vibration died down to a small trickle and now remains along with humming at faster highway speeds. This imitates a broken wheel bearing that occurred on the left front tire, but the Toyota dealer has refused to acknowledge any issue let alone inspect it. This sudden - yet entirely associated with driving - impact clearly caused damage to the wheel bearing and will accelerate its failure. If this occurs at such a rate the bearing fails upon contact with such driving conditions, drivers may lose ability to control their car altogether. A similar issue occurred and was remedied by the dealer for the left wheel. This could be a design flaw resulting from placing too large of tires and too stiff suspension for the Corolla, resulting in mechanical damage whilst driving in normal conditions, which could lead to the failure of steering related mechanical components. The end result of which could be death. Such theories have not been investigated. No warning lamps displayed at any time.

My daughter was driving yesterday when the steering wheel locked suddenly. She was sideswiped by another vehicle that hit the wheel well and forced the steering to work again. The occupants of the other vehicle did not pull over so she drove on to my work where she broke down crying and explained what happened. I took the car in yesterday to diagnose any issues with the car and was told that this is a feature that Toyota has when the car hits something like a pothole at faster speeds. My daughter could not have been going terribly fast considering it was 5:00 p.m. in Los Angeles on Olympic Blvd. during the height of rush hour; however, most concerning is I was told that according to diagnostics this is the third time the car had done this due to "aggressive acceleration". They told me that the jolt from the other car hitting the wheel well must have reset the sensor so the steering wheel could start working again. They said this is a normal safety feature on all Toyota hybrids. I asked for more clarification on what exactly we should do to prevent this happening in the future and they said to accelerate slowly so the sensor has time to keep up. This seems like an incredibly unsafe feature. I emailed Toyota's corporate office for clarification but received nothing to date. I am extremely nervous to drive my car and especially to have my 16 year old daughter drive it! I do have the diagnostic printout the Toyota Service Department gave me yesterday and am happy to share if you would find it useful.

I was driving on expressway to Sharonville, OH on Wednesday, Oct 5 2023 and it started to rain so I tried to put on my wipers and they did not work. I tried to see if they were stuck and by cleaning them but still did not work. I could not see that well, luckily I had rain x on the front windshield so the rain would wash off. I called Toyota in Sharonville area and they told me to bring it in the next morning. I went to the park and then started the wipers and they started back up again. Toyota in Sharonville told me they could do anything unless they saw it not working. This has happen before a couple of times and I reported to Elizabethtown, KY where i get my free maintenance for 2 years. They told me the same thing there that they could not do anything unless they saw them not working. I looked it up on a website and it showed they can do a non functional diagnostic/repair which would test the switch, relay and wiring to see if they are working properly. This is a safety problem which could have caused me an accident without visibility to see where I am going. I have about 2 years left on my bumper to bumper warranty and would like this problem fixed.

I bought my car Toyota Corolla coss has three months with 3,700 miles on it. and has had two times problems. The first time, on February 28 2023 at 8 a.m., I was at a traffic light stop my car about 15 seconds later when I heard a warning beep. The message read "low steering power," low battery, and then steering lock. I tried to turn off the engine button, but there was no response. I pressed it three times, put the handle stop on the park, and then started it again. My car was parked in the middle of the road, causing a traffic jam behind me, and I couldn't get out because it was dangerous. The second time in March 10.2023 3pm. after the stop at the light and anything like first time... It was rainy both times. I'm worried it's dangerous on the highway. It was raining and I had my wipers on and my stop and start system on. I haven't reported it to Toyota dealership. Both of them are in the middle of the road. I'm not sure if there are any defects in this car. Thank you!

There has been several instances where I’m trying to cross a divided Highway and the accelerator doesn’t respond. I’ve had three near death experiences. There’s been other times where it will just shut off and restart without a warning. It’s been in my driveway thankfully. When I pull out in front of someone, it doesn’t respond either. I have had the pedal all the way down to the floor and it wouldn’t go for about 5-6 seconds

I drove .01 miles and stopped at the entrance gate. My windows were dirty, so I used my wiper lever to spray washer fluid on the windows. I pulled out onto traffic after cleaning the window. Due to the space between the wiper control and the manual paddle shift lever ( I think) The lever was hit by my hand ( I think)? or it was a malfunction? so when I pulled out into traffic I was not in any gear and could not accelerate , the car acted like a slipped transmission. Traffic was bearing down on me and the car speed was only 20 miles per hour. I could not accelerate . After I was able to proceed to a turn lane, I tapped the paddle lever and the car acted normal.

please see report number 11479072 for the other information. not once person except the man i talked to there on the phone asked me if the heater went out as well and IT DID! so not only did i lose the ac i lost heat which is what i guess makes this a real problem for everyone. as its friday, after hours i have to wait until monday to contact toyota to get an appointment to confirm the heater doesnt work but just like i confirmed the ac doesnt work, when i say theres no heat, theres no heat. and the condenser is literally located right behind the front grill. there is no way to fix this on my own and i cant repair it because i was told if i drive off the lot it could literally happen again. anyone who has a toyota corolla should be specifically told about this FAILURE of a design thank you!

I was traveling on the interstate through Missouri through to Kansas to get back to California on July 5, 2022 in my brand new just got april 18 2022 toyota corolla hybrid when the entire electrical panel went out on my car. i was driving the speed limit on the interstate with the AC on in 109 degree temps when the whole electric panel went out it was out for about ten minutes before it came back on and when it did i had no AC. i was literally in the middle of the desert, there were no stops coming up, no towns, no shade, nothing! and thank god i had just dropped my nine year old son off in indiana or he could've died with me. the AC condenser on this car is located RIGHT BEHIND the front grill of the car, which has over one inch openings in it and toyota is specifically not covering this part under warranty because they know this is a faulty design. i understand and have been told that AC is a luxury but its not for that one week old baby that is going to be traveling with their family is this car and they have no idea that a PEBBLE (is what toyota told me knocked my ac out in the desert!) is going to knock their AC out and that baby will die. Toyota needs to recall this car or put a screen behind the grill i dont care but the public needs to be made aware how easy it is for the AC to be knocked out. additionally the toyota dealership here said that they can repair it for 1400$ but there's nothing to stop it from happening again as soon as i drive off the lot because there is nothing protecting the condenser. i have a brand new car that is broke and cant be repaired and toyota has told me they stand by their design and IF THEY decide to do a recall i will be notified. please notify the public about this! it is hot everywhere and children will die. i cant even go back to pick my son up and now have to fly him out because i dont have AC in my brand new car. like seriously! think of the children and the people who have no idea how easy it is to go out! thank you!

Vehicle's cruise control got stuck and would not turn off by the brake, the cruise control off button. The only way it would shut off is by swtitching the car into “B-(Low Gear/Engine Braking). Was cruising at 70 mph, and then the cruise control kept speeding the vehicle up to 100 mph, until I switched it into the “B”-(Low Gear/Engine Braking). Now if I wasn’t familiar with this type of car this could have been a tragedy that could have taken place on August 01, 2022.

I did ask service department at dealership where I purchased to have it looked over. Nothing. I feel I could easily be hurt.

Rain water accumulates in the doors of a brand new car that is only 4 weeks old. The only official fix, according to Toyota and NTSA, is to remove the plugs at the bottom so the water can drain out every time it rains. This is not a fix. The water should not be accumulating in the door at all. Over time, the repeated water accumulation will cause mold, mildew, rust and damage the electrical system. This is absolutely absurd.

After 2 months of purchasing the car , interior dashboard wrinkled and below the steep compartment . A week or so the door locks is not functioning all the time. Then after 3 weeks the black door strip is drooping . I emailed the branch manager and took it to the service depot. They said chemicals due to detailing the car . No one will detail the car of 2-3 months old Newly bought . Then they when they told me to bring again for the door is no longer functioning and the door strips and why the car is falling apart. There was 2 wreaks of rain so I did not car wash the car as I always do . They noticed moisture of the oil on the window outside .That the rubber does not like oil . I anoint the car with few sprinkles for decades on previous cars , Datsun, Nissan and Toyota . They said that caused it and I have to pay for the repair I told them I got Toyota Corolla for 10 years and I do what I do in the car and Nothing like this happened. Why now ? I bought the car 4-5x for the door locks and the 2 other issues they kept on putting in their work order summary - door locks functioning at this time ???? It never did function correctly and it never functioned at all on the 3rd , 4th and 5th time . Then they just give me the work order 2x instead of 4-5 different days of work orders in different months I am stuck .Car insurance does not pay because Toyota said chemicals and the other insurance said it wa not caused by accident . Someone opened the car mistakenly when I was texting because it has to lock manually and (I forgot )for almost a month now . I will email you the work orders next time . Please help .ASAP. Thanks .

Soon after purchasing my car, there was a chip and crack in the windshield that had no known cause or occurred when it was not being driven. A couple months after that, there was a rock thrown up getting onto the highway that should not have broken the glass because it did not hit hard enough to typically break the glass and I also have a glass protectant on my windows. I fear there may be a defect in the glass used for the 2021/2022 Toyota Corollas because my friend with the same car, but year 2021 complained of the same problem. It should be investigated. Now I have to replace a windshield and pay a deductible because it is not covered under the extra services that I purchased for dints and dings.
