The infotainment touchscreen in my 2018 Subaru Legacy experiences “ghost touch,” where the screen registers inputs without driver interaction and becomes unresponsive. While driving, the screen changes settings on its own and distracts the driver. As a result of the touchscreen malfunction, critical safety features including Blind Spot Warning and Lane Keeping Assistance became disabled. This directly impacted safe vehicle operation. The issue was diagnosed by an authorized Subaru dealership, which confirmed the head unit is defective and requires replacement. Subaru previously issued a warranty extension for this known defect. Subaru of America denied goodwill assistance despite the safety-related nature of the defect.

My wife experienced an unintended acceleration in her 2018 Subaru Legacy. My wife had begun to slowly back out of a parking space in a school parking lot when her 2018 Legacy went into an unintended rapid acceleration in reverse. The car took off in reverse and did not respond to her applying the brakes. Somehow she managed to steer the car which was rapidly acceleration in reverse, virtually uncontrollable, and guide the car down a row of parked cars until she clipped the front of another car at the end of the row and her car came to a stop. Thank God there were no students in the parking lot at the time! The floor mats in our Legacy are Subaru mats that lie flat and in no way would affect the accelerator pedal. As the car was accelerating in reverse, and she had removed her foot from the accelerator onto the brake, the brakes did not slow the car. There is considerable damage to the right rear of the car and trunk. After the accident, when the car was restarted, the accelerator and brakes worked fine and she was able to drive it home from the scene. Thank god students were not in the parking lot! My head unit in my vehicle has now completely stopped working, I have explained that now my back up camera is now freezing and going black and that it poses a safety risk, but they are not helping me, all they keep telling me was the extended warranty for that specific issue expired in July of 2023. when I checked Subaru's recall website, they have completed out that recall in July of 2025, I have never taken my car in for this issue, I was also never aware of this recall. The infotainment head unit system and screen with the backup camera is completely malfunctioning. There have been instances where the screen glitches out while backing up and I have almost been in a collision. The head unit makes constant random noises, and screen pop ups that cannot be turned off. This makes for highly distracted and unsafe driving as it makes it quite difficult for the car user to maintain sole focus and attention to the roadways and driving. The extreme glitchiness and phantom touches/noises are just as a distraction and safety concern as driving while using a cellphone which is against the law. The infotainment unit should be fully recalled, not just have a warranty extension. The Subaru dealership has inspected the head unit and declared the failure that was part of a now expired warranty extension. The failures came without warning; however the glitches have gotten more frequent and worse over time.

Aug 2025: 2018 Subaru Legacy, 55,500 miles. ISSUE: Rearview camera froze with high-pitch sound for about 10-seconds, then shut off, while in Reverse. I was not aware immediately of this. Did not hit the cars behind me but definitely could have. Unknown if reverse lights affected. Based on online searches, rearview cameras not working is criteria for a recall. BACKGROUND: My main screen is affected by Subaru Screen Delamination (can't use touch at all). My exact model got an extended warranty, but I was not aware of this extension until after it passed. Subaru of America and dealers refused to service it unless I paid full price out-of-pocket. Fast-forward to now, reverse camera being affected. I also see mention online of emergency broadcast radio being blocked, since it does not stay on one channel, due to screen issues. I do not recommend Subaru (not the only issue I've had on a once new vehicle).

I am writing to raise a serious and ongoing issue regarding the infotainment system in my 2018 Subaru Legacy. The problem centers on the widespread and well-documented screen delamination defect, which has caused persistent and unsafe behavior in the vehicle’s head unit — a critical system affecting both usability and driver safety. In my case, the screen began delaminating around the 100,000-mile mark, just outside the warranty. Since then, the problem has progressively worsened and now renders the infotainment system unusable. The screen ghost-touches and rapidly changes menus, inputs, and radio stations, often without any driver interaction. This is not merely an aesthetic defect — it poses a substantial safety hazard and functional impairment. Most alarmingly: The radio will change frequencies automatically, sometimes switching away from AM emergency broadcast channels without warning or input. This poses a clear safety concern in weather-related or disaster scenarios when access to emergency broadcasts is essential. The screen unpredictably shifts menus and settings while driving, creating a visual distraction that competes with the driver’s focus on the road. This is an unacceptable risk in a vehicle designed with safety as a brand hallmark. Hands-free and navigation functionality are affected, which may compel drivers to interact with the system in motion — violating hands-free laws in many states and contradicting Subaru’s commitment to safe vehicle design. The issue is widely reported across Subaru owner forums, independent shops, and social media. It is linked directly to a known defect in the Harman-made infotainment units used in 2018 models and related vehicles. This is not an isolated or unique case. Despite this known problem, Subaru of America continues to decline support for owners affected outside the extended warranty period. Even though the issue eventually effects every single model. The navigation/radio screen stopped responding to touch but continues to randomly press buttons. While driving the car the touch screen is randomly calling people, changing radio stations, and messing with the lights and navigation. I reached out to Subaru to let them know what was happening and they claim it is a known issue but they haven't chosen to make a recall on it. They claim it is an issue on all of the vehicles from 2018/2019. They claim the screen is delaminating which is why it is causing random buttons to be pushed making the car extremely unsafe to drive. The distraction alone isn't safe but for me as an autistic driver the inability to turn it off is a huge issue. There is no work around available and it will just continue to make noises and randomly call people and mess with the interior of the vehicle. Working in the insurance industry I see the results of distracted driving and cannot believe this hadn't been recalled yet. There was no warning before this started. The touch screen was working fine on my way to work and then on my way home it started to go crazy. I was unable to use the touch screen installed in the car and am not able to turn it off. Subaru is aware of the issue and has not either created a safe way to disengage the part nor are they willing to replace the part.

The issue began as air bubbles appearing on the center touchscreen. This has escalated to the screen having episodes of complete loss of control, it acts as if it’s rapidly receiving input and will change settings, perform or end calls, change what’s being displayed. We had the stereo volume turn completely up while on the highway with my [XXX] child in the car and I was unable to turn it down. For context, we are the original owners of the 2018 Subaru Legacy car (leased in 2018, and then purchased outright in 2022). At the time of the incident, the car was in pristine condition. We had the oil changed in accordance with the maintenance agreement during the lease, and then every 6,000 miles or whenever the dealership called us to bring in the car. The car had 39,000 miles on it at the time of the incident and had an oil change as recently as 2.5 months prior. While stopped in traffic, the car began making a sputtering noise and all the lights on the dashboard turned on at the same time. When pushing on the gas the car began rolling down the hill towards the car behind me. I put the car into park and then turned it off, and then waved traffic to pass me. After reinserting the key into the ignition, the car began to make the sputtering noise again, but I was able to move the car very slowly onto the shoulder of the road. The greatest danger is that this occurred in moving traffic. Thankfully, there was no harm done to me or anyone else. I had the car towed to the nearest auto mechanic shop. Initially, the shop informed me it was an issue with the spark plug, but upon further investigation, they told me the problem was with the engine and asked me to bring it to the dealership. The dealership is unsure of the exact issue, but stated that it was engine failure (more details in screenshots below). The technician has stated that we will need to completely rebuild the engine to fully identify and fix the problem.

This has happened on several occasions and with young children in the car, it can damage hearing, cause traumatic injury OR if in motion the driver can become quickly surprised or distracted and jerk the steering wheel or react to the jump in sound level that could injury passengers, or other vehicles occupied that may be nearby. The car (#1) came to a sudden stop on a freeway without the driver stepped on the brake pedal. Front dash cam video on car #1 is available. Car #1 was then hit from behind by another car (#2) which could not stop in time. However, the impact was not significant because car #2 was able to partially switch lane and only the corners of the bumpers of both cars made the contact. The sudden stop problem could NOT be reproduced afterward by the driver. No dealer/car shop has been contacted on this issue. Warning light(s) status on dashboard of car #1 was UNKNOWN . However, driver of car#2 did report seeing brake lights of car #1 before the impact. Car #1 had never been in an accident before. This was the first time the sudden stop issue occurred.

I have recently been made aware that it is alleged that this Subaru model is defective in such a way to precipitate early battery failure. I want my experience added to that of others. I have documentation of this battery replacement which I could supply upon request.

WHILE TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE, THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE FRONT WINDSHIELD BECAME DAMAGED FROM UNKNOWN REASONS AFTER EXPERIENCING A SLIGHT DIP IN THE ROAD. A CRACK FORMED AND EXPANDED TO OVER 12 INCHES IN LENGTH QUICKLY. ATTACHED PHOTO 20200829_164645 INCLUDED AS EVIDENCE. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS VEHICLE HAS EXPERIENCED FRONT WINDSHIELD DAMAGE. IT WAS REPLACED A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO WITH OEM PARTS (CARLEX GLASS) THROUGH MY INSURANCE. ATTACHED PHOTO SCREENSHOT_202... AS EVIDENCE. THAT INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AND ROAD DEBRIS STRUCK THE PASSENGER EDGE OF THE FRONT WINDSHIELD. A CRACK FORMED AND SPREAD TO THE MIDDLE OF THE WINDSHIELD. DUE TO HAVING EYESIGHT TECHNOLOGY THE FRONT WINDSHIELD IS IMPERATIVE TO SAFETY OPERATIONS AND NEEDS TO REMAIN FREE FROM DEFECTS, SINCE IT CAN CONTROL A VEHICLE'S ACCELERATION, BRAKING, AND STEERING CONTROL SYSTEM. I BELIEVE THAT THE FRONT WINDSHIELD GLASS BEING USED BY SUBARU (CARLEX GLASS) IS SUBSTANDARD AND CREATING A DANGEROUS CONDITION FOR DRIVERS WHO UTILIZE THIS TECHNOLOGY. IF A WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENT IS NEEDED, RECALIBRATION OF EYESIGHT TECHNOLOGY IS REQUIRED TO ENSURE SAFETY COMPLIANCE. THIS ADDITIONAL PROCEDURE CAN DISSUADE OWNERS DUE TO TIME AND COST; THEREBY, CREATING AN ADDITIONAL SAFETY PREDICAMENT BY HAVING DRIVERS OPERATE IMPERFECT VEHICLES. RESEARCH HAS INDICATED SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM VARIOUS INDIVIDUALS AND MULTIPLE SUBARU MODELS OVER A SPAN OF YEARS. I IMPLORE YOU TO INVESTIGATE IMMEDIATELY!

AFTER IMMEDIATELY TAKING IT IN AT THE LOCAL CAR DEALER, SERVICE AGENTS CLAIMED THAT A "RODENT" HAS CAUSED THE DAMAGE. AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH, WE HAVE DISCOVERED A NATIONAL CIVIL SUIT AGAINST SUBARU. APPARENTLY THEY ARE USING BIODEGRADABLE MATERIALS ON THE WIRING OF MANY NEW CARS THAT ATTRACTS SQUIRRELS AND MICE. WE HAVE LIVED AT OUR CURRENT RESIDENCE FOR OVER 35 YEARS WITH NUMEROUS CARS IN THE DRIVEWAY WITHOUT THIS PROBLEM. CONSUMER REPORTS ON JULY 10,2017, REPORTED THAT THEY HAVE UNCOVERED VARIOUS TECHNICAL BULLETINS FROM FORD, GM, HONDA, TOYOTA, AS WELL AS SUBARU CONCERNING THIS ISSUE. DEALER, AT THE MOMENT, REFUSES TO FIX IT WITHOUT EXTENSIVE COST TO US. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR--DRIVING IT WOULD NOT ONLY BE UNSAFE BUT ILLEGAL SINCE THE AIR BAG AS WELL AS THE SEAT BELTS SHOW A MALFUNCTION. FIXING IT MAY NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM ON PERMANENT BASIS.
ODI #11048499VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
OUR RECENT PURCHASE OF A 2018 SUBARU LEGACY HAS LEFT US WITH A VERY UNHAPPY REALIZATION. WE HAVE A SUBARU OUTBACK AND LIKE THE CAR BUT VERY UNHAPPY WITH THE CRUISE. WE DID NOT REALIZE THE CRUISE CONTROL ADVANCES 1 OR 5 MPH RATHER THAN THE CONVENTIONAL CRUISE OF 1 MPH. WE HAVE FOUND THIS FEATURE TO BE NOT ONLY ON SUBARU BUT MANY OTHER MAKES OF VEHICLES. FROM RESEARCHING ONLINE AND TALKING TO OTHERS HAVE FOUND WE ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES THAT DO NOT LIKE IT AND FEEL IT IS UNSAFE. THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A REASON TO ADVANCE 5 MPH RATHER THAN 1 MPH. WHEN USING THIS TYPE OF CRUISE IT IS NECESSARY TO WATCH THE SPEEDOMETER, RATHER THAN PAYING ATTENTION TO THE ROAD, TO GET TO THE ANTICIPATED SPEED AND THEN QUICKLY SET AND HOPE YOU LOCKED-IN THE DESIRED SPEED. IF THE DESIRED SPEED IS NOT REACHED THE FIRST TIME THEN IT IS PUSHING THE CRUISE AND HOLDING IT, HOPING THAT IT ONLY ADVANCED 1 MPH RATHER THAN 5 MPH, OTHERWISE IT IS CANCELING AND TRYING AGAIN. WE CONTACTED SUBARU ABOUT THIS AND WERE TOLD THAT IF THERE ARE ENOUGH COMPLAINTS THEY WOULD CONSIDER A SOFTWARE UPDATE. IT WAS ALSO EXPLAINED THAT WE WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IF WE WERE TOLD THIS BEFORE THE PURCHASE OF THE CAR. WE LOOKED AT THE WEBSITES FOR THE SAFEST VEHICLES AND SUBARU IS AT THE TOP OF THE LIST BUT THIS TYPE OF CRUISE CONTROL TAKES AWAY THE SAFETY; EVERYONE IS PREACHING TO REDUCE DISTRACTIONS WHEN DRIVING BUT TAKING AWAY THE CONVENTIONAL CRUISE CONTROL AND IMPLEMENTING SUCH A DISTRACTION DEFEATS THE PURPOSE. WE HOPE THIS COMPLAINT LEADS BACK TO VEHICLES HAVING CONVENTIONAL CRUISE CONTROL AS THE STANDARD EQUIPMENT.
