Critical Deferred Risk
Critical deferred failure risk — 4 safety-critical or high-cost components are past their service interval. Without immediate attention, repair costs will compound significantly.
No odometer data on record. Mileage is estimated at ~132,000 mi based on average annual driving. Items marked EST. OVERDUE may already be due — verify service history with the seller. Items marked OVERDUE are confirmed past-due based on vehicle age alone.
EST. OVERDUECriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Service interval: 10 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Timing Chain Tensioner immediately — already past the 120,000 mi / 10 yr interval
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
EST. OVERDUECriticalWater Pump
Service interval: 8 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Water Pump immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 8 yr interval
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
EST. OVERDUEHighTransmission Fluid / Service
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Transmission Fluid / Service immediately — already past the 60,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
EST. OVERDUEHighCoolant Flush
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Coolant Flush immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
EST. OVERDUEModerateSpark Plugs (iridium/platinum)
Service interval: 8 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Spark Plugs (iridium/platinum) immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 8 yr interval
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
EST. OVERDUEModerateFuel Injectors
Service interval: 10 yr · Vehicle age: 11 yr · Past due by age
Service Fuel Injectors immediately — already past the 120,000 mi / 10 yr interval
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.
DEFECTCriticalKnown Model Defect
Failure timing unpredictable — defect may already be active
Volkswagen Dieselgate: TDI engines equipped with defeat device software to cheat EPA emissions tests
Documented systemic defect with class action or NHTSA investigation. These issues are often unrepaired at point of sale.
CASCADECriticalFailure Cascade
Cascade already triggered — downstream damage likely in progress
Have a specialist inspect all systems connected to the failed component before purchase
One failed component has created stress on connected systems. Repair costs compound quickly — a $500 fix can become $3,000+ if cascade damage is ignored.

I have been trying to get the recall fixed since I purchased my vehicle in July 2023. For nearly two years, I have received repeated letters from Volkswagen urging me to have the recall addressed. However, despite calling every two months to schedule an appointment, I am always told that the part is unavailable and that they have no estimated date for its arrival. I'm continually advised to call back in another two months. Last month, after calling dealerships more than ten times since purchasing the vehicle, I contacted VW Customer Service directly. They referred me to the Macon dealership, assuring me that they would assist in booking an appointment. Unfortunately, after speaking with Macon, I was once again told to call back—this time in October—when they might receive the necessary part. I am moving back to Canada at the end of August, and despite nearly two years of effort, my vehicle remains unrepaired. I am extremely dissatisfied with this situation, especially considering the severity of the issue. I live in Georgia, where the climate is hot and humid, and I avoid driving the vehicle out of fear that the airbag could deploy dangerously. Volkswagen has failed to support me through this process, and I am left with a potentially unsafe vehicle and no resolution in sight.

My car is subject to the Takata Air Bag recall. Due to the age of the vehicle, and the hot climate where I live (California), I am in fear for my safety especially with summer around the corner. "The Old Farmer's Almanac forecasts a "scorcher" with hotter-than-normal temperatures across most of the U.S., including California." Originally, I had a service appointment for 2024 but there was a shortage of parts. I showed up for my next appointment 6/4/25 to have the service done and was told that the parts are on back order nationally until at least September. Due to the nature of my situation, my case was escalated to their RCM where I was told that nothing could be done. I asked about a loaner vehicle or a rental reimbursement until the parts arrive and they told me it was not possible. I find this to be extremely unreasonable given the severity of the recall. There are deaths and serious injuries linked to this defect and I am in constant fear when I drive my vehicle. No one should have to knowingly take this kind of risk every time they commute to work. I have spoken to multiple agents and have reached a dead end. I hope that a solution can be found for my case.

ODI #11650977EXTERIOR LIGHTING,STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKESCRASH

The 2015 Volkswagen Beetle was in a minor accident that was rear-ended by another vehicle. No one was injured. The other party claimed responsibility and the vehicle was repaired and the other party paid for the repairs. The problem is with Volkswagen not having the OEM safety equipment available to complete the repairs. The specific part is a spoiler attached to the rear trunk lid that increases the visibility of the brake light built into the rear trunk lid. In traffic this vehicle has only two brake lights within the rear fenders lower to the ground. The spoiler attached above the brake light that is attached at the top of the rear trunk lid, sits above the tail lights and the brake light can be seen by the driver in the vehicle behind the VW. VW claims that this part is on backorder. It is not available within the United States. I believe Volkswagen is refusing to manufacture this critical safety part for repairs of their vehicle. I have been told by several dealers that this part is not available and is on back order. I have tried to locate this part from VW dealers in Texas and out of state also. They all tell me the same thing. Its on back order. I understand this vehicle model is out of production but is being reintroduced again in 2025. Volkswagen should be responsible for providing original parts, especially critical safety parts. Hopefully the NTSA can bring this problem to Volkswagens attention and they will make the responsible safety decision and provide a critical safety component of this vehicle to the customers of their company. Thank you.

ODI #11531943POWER TRAIN,ENGINE

Component or System Failure: The specific component that failed or malfunctioned in my 2015 VW Beetle 1.8T Classic PZEV is the timing belt, which caused bent valves resulting in the engine seizing up, rendering it inoperable. It is available for inspection upon request. Safety Implications: The failure of the engine posed a significant risk to my safety and the safety of others. When the engine failed while I was driving on the freeway, it resulted in a sudden loss of power and alarming knocking sounds. This sudden loss of power on a busy highway endangered my life and the lives of other drivers around me. Confirmation by Dealer or Service Center: The problem has been confirmed by a Volkswagen dealership. I had the vehicle towed to Bill marines Volkswagen dealership for diagnosis, and they assessed that the engine had "jumped time" and the valves were bent, rendering the car undrivable. Inspections by Manufacturer, Authorities, or Others: The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer or any other relevant authorities at this point. However, I have sought assistance and evaluation from a Volkswagen dealership, which is an authorized service center for the brand. They were the first to diagnose the catastrophic engine failure. Warning Lamps, Messages, or Symptoms: Prior to the engine failure, there were no warning lamps or messages indicating a problem. There were no noticeable symptoms or signs of an impending failure. The failure occurred suddenly while driving on the freeway, without any prior indication of trouble. Please let me know if there is any additional information or documentation required to assist with the investigation. I am committed to providing accurate and reliable information to support the resolution of this matter.

NHTSA, VW has informed me that there is recall on my car that could cause life-threatening injuries to me or my children who drive the car. I first heard about the recall of the airbag in January 2023 on the news. I have contacted my dealer 3 times to get the airbag fixed and they tell me each time that they do not have a solution to fix my car. I believe I have waited patiently for 6 months waiting for a fix while also driving an unsafe car. Shouldn't you do something about this problem?

This is a dangerous issue but VW is doing nothing but telling us, as required. So, what are we supposed to do? Drive an unsafe car or wait indefinitely for VW to get around to having a remedy? Neither seems reasonable nor acceptable. It's supposedly related to humidity and/or heat, and my car has lived most of its life in Hawaii and Arizona, so ... How can they just say, "Your car has a safety defect that may kill you, but we aren't prepared to do anything about it" and nothing else? Shouldn't they owe us all at least a rental until the car can be made safe? Furthermore, in the recall notice they sent today, dated February 2023, despite the recall actually being from 1/5/23, they say in the same paragraph, "Don't call the dealer, they can't help" and "As always, call the dealer for help." What? Insult to possibly severe injury or death, CARFAX notified us over a month ago, and LoJack did yesterday, and when I contacted the dealer over a month ago, they claimed there was NO RECALL, despite my giving them the recall info from your site (Manufacturer Recall Number 69EM / NHTSA Recall Number 22V945), and today they said there's only a PENDING recall. So, please, tell me what we are to do, let my son drive this car or just not have a car? Also, they say it can explode, sending metal fragments flying, but is this if and when it deploys (and fails) in an accident or just randomly, whenever, just driving along? Thank you for any information, guidance, and prodding of VW. This if not fixed very quickly will certainly end our long relationship with VW.

This vehicle experiences faults with the camshaft advance system randomly. At 70,000 miles this seems to be abnormal. At times upon start up or slow speed operation the vehicle will stumble, misfire and the engine may stall if the rpms arent increased. Fault codes indicate a faulty camshaft sensor or solenoid valve. VW tells me this isn't covered by any emissions warranty and could be caused by dirty oil. My own searches on the internet have found multiple complaints about this issue with the 1.8 and 2.0 engine. Camshaft timing most certainly effects emissions and this part in my opinion would be able to function properly between oil changes. A slow speed engine stall could be dangerous due to the lack of power steering .

Key was unable to move to turn engine off, and was stuck in ignition of my 2015 VW Beetle with under 60,000 miles on odometer. I sat in a parking lot for 15-20 minutes Googling recommendations about how to turn off my car! I am scheduled 7/27/21 at Cochran VW for an assessment of this issue. I have read online that there are numerous complaints of this issue and for many years now. There is currently a warranty extension for the steering lock assembly, but I am not sure that this will cover my issue. If this is a continuous issue over many years, how has there not been a recall? Thank goodness for Google and the numerous complaints about this issue (with numerous suggestions to shut engine off), or I’d still be in the parking lot at the grocery store. Sorry, I don’t have photos or documentation of my endlessly running car. I’ll have more information after the VW dealership diagnostics.

HE TOLD THEM THAT IT WAS OK BECAUSE ALL OF THE CAMERAS WERE LIKE THAT. WE HAVE OWNED CARS PREVIOUSLY WITH BACK UP CAMERAS AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM. THE CAMERAS WITH GPS DO NOT HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. THE DEALER TOLD ME I COULD PAY FOR A UNIT WITH GPS. I HAVE A HAND HELD GPS SO HAVE NO DESIRE TO PUT MORE MONEY INTO IT. I PAID EXTRA FOR THE BACKUP CAMERA AND DID NOT GET MY MONEY'S WORTH. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE SINCE THE BACK WINDOW IN THE CONVERTIBLE ALLOWS FOR ONLY LIMITED SIGHT.

PURCHASED A 2015 VW BETTLE FOR MY DAUGHTER. ONE REQUIREMENT WE HAD WAS A BACKUP CAMERA. TEST DROVE CAR IN A STORM AND TOOK IT HOME SAME DAY. THOUGHT CAMERA WAS DARK DUE TO THE WEATHER. WE WERE WRONG. PICTURE QUALITY IS VERY POOR. SCREEN IS DARK. BRIGHTNESS CAN NOT BE ADJUSTED. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. WHY HAVE A CAMERA ON A VEHICLE THAT IS SO POOR? SPOKE TO DEALERSHIP WHO MENTIONED BRIGHTNESS CAN NOT BE ADJUSTED AND TO SOMEONE ON VW CHAT WHO MENTIONED SAME THING. DEFINITELY A RIP OFF AND SAFETY ISSUE. VW SHOULD REPLACE THESE CAMERAS WITH ONES THAT WORK. OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE ABOUT SAME ISSUE.

THE BACKUP CAMERA ON MY 2015 BEETLE IS USELESS MOST OF THE TIME. THE IMAGE IS VERY DARK. I COMPLAINED TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE A SOLUTION TO THIS SAFETY PROBLEM,

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED MULTIPLE ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTIONS THAT INCLUDED THE VEHICLE SHUTTING COMPLETELY OFF, OCCASIONALLY NOT BEING ABLE TO START, ALONG WITH DOORS AND WINDOWS OCCASIONALLY NOT OPERATING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURES WERE DUE TO THE COMPUTER NOT RECOGNIZING THE KEY FOB. NO ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE EVENTUALLY SUFFERED A CATASTROPHIC COMPUTER FAILURE, WHICH COMPLETELY DISABLED THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPLACED BY THE MANUFACTURER WITH AN IDENTICAL VEHICLE. THE CONTACT CONTINUED TO HAVE THE ELECTRICAL FAILURES WITH THE SECOND VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START AND THE "IGNITION KEY WAS NOT IN RANGE WARNING" APPEARED ACROSS THE MESSAGE BOARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE IGNITION KEY BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,000.

THE CAR WAS PURCHASED NEW. THE BACKUP CAMERA ON THE VEHICLE IS VERY DARK AND NOT SAFELY USABLE. EVEN ON SUNNY DAYS THE IMAGE IS VERY DARK AND OBJECTS CANNOT BE SEEN WELL ENOUGH TO MAKE BACKING UP SAFE. THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER ON THE SAME DAY OF PURCHASE FOR REPAIR. WAS INFORMED THAT A SLIGHT ADJUSTMENT WAS MADE BUT NOTHING ELSE COULD BE DONE AND THAT MY VW CAMERA WAS COMPARED TO OTHER BEETLES IN THEIR LOT AND THEY WERE ALL THE SAME WITH LOW IMAGE. THE ADJUSTMENT MADE NO DIFFERENCE IN THE CAMERA IMAGE. IT IS STILL DARK AND NOT SAFE TO USE. I HAVE REGISTERED MY COMPLAINT WITH THE LOCAL DEALER AND WITH VW, INC. I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE.

ODI #10716820UNKNOWN OR OTHER

THE BACKUP CAMERA ON THE VEHICLE IS SO DARK TO BE ALMOST UNUSABLE. IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE A SAFETY DEVICE, BUT YOU CANNOT IDENTIFY WHAT IS IN YOUR PATH. IT HAS BEEN BACK TO THE DEALER FOR THIS AND THEY CANNOT FIND A FAULT OR A WAY TO ADJUST THE IMAGE. THEY CONTACTED VOLKSWAGEN TECH SUPPORT WHO OFFERED NO SOLUTION AND DO NOT SEEM TO BE INTERESTED. I HAVE ASKED TO CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN DIRECTLY, BUT THEY HAVE NO WAY FOR THE CONSUMER TO DO THAT. THIS CAR HAS THE "PREMIUM 8" RADIO AND NO NAVIGATION. IT APPEARS TO BE AN ODD COMBINATION AS I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO LOCATE ONE FOR COMPARISON WITHIN A 50 MILE RADIUS. AGAIN, THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE BACKS OVER A CHILD OR SOMETHING ELSE.

ODI #10701312VISIBILITY/WIPER

THE BACKUP CAMERA ON THE BEETLE DOES NOT WORK. THE IMAGE ON THE SCREEN IS TOO DARK TO SEE ANYTHING. THE ONLY TIME YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE BACKUP CAMERA IS IN FULL SUN, AND THEN IT IS STILL DISTORTED AND UNABLE TO USE. I KNOW THAT 2018 THAT ALL CARS ARE SUPPOSE TO HAVE A BACK UP CAMERA, BUT IF A CAR ALREADY HAS THE SAFETY FEATURE SHOULD IT NOT WORK PROPERLY? MY THEORY IS THAT THEY ARE TRYING TO TEST THE SYSTEM TO SEE HOW MUCH THEY COULD GET AWAY WITH. TO HAVE THE CAMERA IN PLACE, BUT ONLY MEET THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OF THE LAW. BUT THIS IS NOT USABLE. I HAVE TAKEN THE BEETLE INTO 2 DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS, ALL THEY HAVE DONE IS VISIBLE COMPARISON WITH OTHER BEETLES. THEY SAY THAT IT MEETS ALL TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS, AND THERE IS NO FIX. *TR

Chart Analysis

The blue line shows 99 total NHTSA complaints filed over 11 years, with the worst year being 2023 (44 complaints).

The amber reliability line shows an improving trend — scores have risen from the earlier years toward 67/100 more recently, suggesting the most serious issues are older and may have been addressed through repairs or recalls.

Notably, despite 99 complaints on file, no recall has been issued — either the defect pattern has not met NHTSA's threshold for a formal campaign, or a recall may be forthcoming.

Red dots on the amber line flag 2 years (2016, 2025) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.

Transmission – DQ200 7-Speed Dry DSG
COVERAGE:5 years / 60,000 miles (extended program — verify with dealer)

The DQ200 dry 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission exhibits shuddering, jerking, bucking at low speeds, and mechatronic unit failures. VW acknowledged widespread issues and extended coverage on the mechatronic unit and clutch pack under a customer satisfaction program.

HOW TO CLAIM: Visit a VW or Audi dealer and request mechatronic unit inspection and DSG software update 0AM. If shuddering or harsh engagement persists after the software update, the mechatronic unit or clutch pack should be replaced under warranty.

Coverage eligibility depends on your VIN, original sale date, and current mileage. Always verify with an authorized dealer or manufacturer customer service — programs may have been updated since this database was compiled.
