Deferred Failure Risk

Components and defects approaching or past their known service milestones

66/100
Critical Deferred Risk
Critical deferred failure risk — 2 safety-critical or high-cost components are past their service interval. Without immediate attention, repair costs will compound significantly.
No odometer data on record. Mileage is estimated at ~84,000 mi based on average annual driving. Items marked EST. OVERDUE may already be due — verify service history with the seller. Items marked OVERDUE are confirmed past-due based on vehicle age alone.
MONITORCriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Service interval: 120,000 mi · Est. ~84,000 mi (no odometer on record)
Schedule Timing Chain Tensioner service before 120,000 mi
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
DUE SOONCriticalWater Pump
Service interval: 100,000 mi · Est. ~84,000 mi (no odometer on record)
Schedule Water Pump service before 100,000 mi
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
EST. OVERDUEHighTransmission Fluid / Service
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 7 yr · Past due by age
Service Transmission Fluid / Service immediately — already past the 60,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
EST. OVERDUEHighCoolant Flush
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 7 yr · Past due by age
Service Coolant Flush immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
DUE SOONModerateSpark Plugs (iridium/platinum)
Service interval: 100,000 mi · Est. ~84,000 mi (no odometer on record)
Schedule Spark Plugs (iridium/platinum) service before 100,000 mi
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
MONITORModerateFuel Injectors
Service interval: 120,000 mi · Est. ~84,000 mi (no odometer on record)
Schedule Fuel Injectors service before 120,000 mi
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.
CASCADECriticalFailure Cascade
Cascade already triggered — downstream damage likely in progress
Have a specialist inspect all systems connected to the failed component before purchase
One failed component has created stress on connected systems. Repair costs compound quickly — a $500 fix can become $3,000+ if cascade damage is ignored.

Engine and transmission disengaged from each other and I could no longer accelerate or keep speed. I had to pull over, turn off the car and turn it back on. February 14 early afternoon the car was just acting funny like I didn’t wanna go started jerking I pulled over on I-95 where the car continue to jerk and act funny so I cut the car off. Try to cut it back on and it wouldn’t crank up all the way, so I had to get the car to back to my address where I had a old mechanic come out to inspect with the problem. Engine light came on through some codes telling me it was ignition coils, and other things got those fixed same cold still appeared at the car inspected further, somehow some kind of way engine oil was in the connector to the ECM. Nothing ever been majorly wrong with the car maintenance and oil changes in engine oil just happened to be in the connector to the ECM. I recently bought a 2019 Nissan Altima SR and when I got it home I noticed the door locks weren't locking or unlocking on 3 doors! The salesman didn't mention any problems with the car and I inspected it and didn't notice this until I got it home. This is a safety issue and everything should work on a vehicle when one buys it. There were no warnings and I have a family with two teen kids and one drives. I've reported this to the dealer and they haven't responded yet. I don't feel safe in the car with this problem and I also saw this is a common complaint on different websites. I can't afford to shell out more money for a repair that should of been done before they sold it to me. There should be an immediate recall that nissan needs to address this.

ODI #11727623ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE

I’ve owned this vehicle since March 2023, and I have experienced several electrical issues. For instance, my car displays a malfunction warning and the check engine light multiple times throughout the month. When the engine malfunction warning appears, the engine will not accelerate, and if the vehicle is idling, it will shut off. I then have to restart the car. Another issue involves the door locks. I am sometimes unable to lock my doors using the key, or the lock will get stuck and not open. I have also seen other complaints reporting the same issue. This is concerning and poses a safety hazard.

It will overheat and then come right down again. Thermostat was replace again and was doing good then the same issue keeps occuring. My car currently has 175000 miles. No warning lights come on when the vehicle begins to overheat

ODI #11724959ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

I am filing this complaint because the locking system on my 2019 Nissan Altima has been malfunctioning for a few years, and it has now become a serious safety issue. I first noticed that my back doors and my front driver-side doors would not lock or unlock when using the remote or the button inside the car. This is very concerning because it means my car is often unsecured when it should be locked, and there are never any warning lamps or messages to let me know the system failed. I have to manually lock and unlock the doors myself just to get them to work, which has happened multiple times while my kids were trying to exit the vehicle. The problem has recently gotten worse. Last week, I had an issue where the door would not open at all because the latch stayed engaged even though the door was "unlocked." I had to pull the manual lever multiple times before it would finally open. This constant locking issue is a major risk because it could prevent us from getting out of the car quickly in an emergency. The vehicle and these components are available for inspection, and I am taking the car to Nissan tomorrow to have the problem confirmed and inspected.

After the collision, he discovered the gas pedal had snapped off, causing the unintended movement. His vehicle was only traveling at 5 MPH or less at the time of impact, so the pedal breakage was not due to the collision. Stranded in the intersection, he was assisted by two individuals who pushed his car to safety. The police arrived, and a report was filed. My vehicle was taking to the dealership for an inspection for the nissan engine recall. During the inspection metal was found in my oil pan which the recall states they must repair or replace engine if any metal is found. I was told the engine would be replaced on 11/15/2025 but 2 days later 11/17/2025 I was contacted saying nissan denied my recall repair and to come back and pickup my vehicle. The recall states if any metal is found they must replace the engine but nissan refuse to fix the issue. The report they showed me Saturday stated oil was in my oil pan but now since they denied the recall the report was changed to nothing was found in oil pan. I notied the manager and after I mentioned that to the service manager they changed the report again stating metal was found.

ODI #11698682POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On August 30, 2025, while driving on the highway, my 2019 Nissan Altima displayed a “CVT (AT) Hot / Power Reduced” warning. Power was limited, but the engine did not shut off. I immediately scheduled service at Paul Miller Nissan in Fairfield, CT. At the September 2, 2025 visit, the repair order stated: “Customer states CVT (AT) Hot Power Reduced display in dash. All past codes stored; cleared all past codes stored.” No complete diagnostic test, CVT pressure test, or fluid inspection was performed. The dealership did not preserve the freeze-frame data from the TCM. I was told that no current fault codes were present and that the vehicle was safe to operate. Relying on the dealership’s professional assurance, I continued normal use of the vehicle. About a couple of weeks later, the vehicle began to jerk and lose smooth acceleration intermittently, worsening by the sixth week. I promptly returned for service. On October 21–22, 2025, the same dealership confirmed transmission codes P0776 and P17F0, diagnosing a CVT failure and recommending full replacement. When questioned about prior diagnostic data, the service manager stated that all data from the September visit had been cleared and that the freeze-frame information was deleted and no longer available. This handling contradicts Nissan’s standard CVT diagnostic protocol, which requires documenting stored codes, inspecting CVT fluid condition, and recording internal temperatures before clearing data. Nissan Consumer Affairs later stated their review relied solely on the dealership’s findings and that missing diagnostic data would not be retrieved. Since the confirmed failure, I have been forced to rent a vehicle at my own expense, exceeding $1000 to date. The vehicle’s reduced power and transmission failure created a serious safety risk, especially as I transport my children in this vehicle. The dealership’s erasure of diagnostic evidence prevented accurate evaluation and timely repair. The issue remains unresolved.

ODI #11698860AIR BAGS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCECRASH

The airbag system failed to deploy during a collision. The vehicle is currently in not my possession. The airbag control module, sensors, and airbags themselves can be inspected to determine the cause of non-deployment. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? My safety was put at significant risk because the airbags did not deploy during the impact. This increased the potential for serious injury to the driver and passengers during the crash, as the airbags are a critical part of the vehicle’s safety system designed to prevent head and chest injuries. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Not yet. The vehicle has not been inspected by my insurance and considered totaled. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? A police report was filed for the accident, and my insurance company has been notified. The vehicle has been inspected by insurance, but both parties have been informed of the issue and an inspection has been taken place 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lights or airbag system messages appeared prior to the crash. The airbag light on the dashboard was functioning normally before the accident, and there were no indications of a malfunction with the safety restraint system.

NHTSA Online Complaint Vehicle: 2019 Nissan Altima VIN: [XXX] Recall: R25B1 (NHTSA Recall No. 25V-437) Description of the Problem: My vehicle is affected by recall R25B1 (NHTSA Recall No. 25V-437) related to potential bearing failures in the 2.0L VC-Turbo engine. Nissan announced this recall on June 26, 2025, but the status remains “Incomplete – remedy not yet available.” I have contacted Nissan Consumer Affairs and local dealerships several times, but they confirmed that there is no repair or parts available. Due to this unresolved safety recall, my state’s DMV has refused to register my vehicle, meaning I cannot legally operate it. The contact owns a 2019 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the engine overheated and hot air came out of the vents, entering the cabin of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the coolant reservoir needed to be refilled. The dealer refilled the coolant reservoir. The failure persisted, and the vehicle was returned to the dealer, who then diagnosed that the radiator thermostat had failed. The thermostat was replaced; however, the failure reoccurred approximately 3 weeks after the repair. While driving approximately 30 MPH, the engine started to overheat, and the temperature gauge moved to "High". The vehicle stalled while on the side of the road and waited for approximately 30 minutes before being able to restart and drive to the residence. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the engine and failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. I have a 2019 Nissan Altima SR 2.5. I have currently had the car for about 3 or 4 years now. For most of the time I have had the car, the check engine light stays on. I have had it tested, and it always states that it is the Mass Air Flow Sensor. When sitting in park idling, it will "malfunction" and state that the engine is reducing power. During this, the automatic emergency brake warning light and the VDC light will come on. It's rare that it happens while I am driving but it has happened. I recently had the vehicle checked again and again it stated that the Mass Air Flow Sensor and the Grille Shutter Actuator were throwing codes along with some other minor items. I purchased the MAFS and replaced it in hope that this would correct a lot of the idling issues, however after a few days of driving the vehicle, it again has started to malfunction and idle harshly. I do know it typically happens in the morning recently, but I was also having issues with my battery draining for no reason. This car is a certified lemon. I currently don't know what to do, as this sight states I have no unrepaired recalls for this vehicle, and I currently owe too much money to trade it in.

I’ve been experiencing recurring issues with my 2019 Nissan Altima. The malfunction indicator light comes on randomly, often accompanied by several warning lights including the check engine light. When this happens, the car struggles to accelerate and feels like it’s stalling, creating serious safety concerns. I’m aware that there is an active recall for the same symptoms affecting the same model year of the Altima, but my vehicle is not included in the recall due to having the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine instead of the 2.0-liter VC-Turbo. I own a 2019 Nissan Altima S, and recently, all three door locks except for the front passenger door stopped responding to the key fob and the button on the door. From my research, it seems that the most common cause of this issue is a faulty door lock actuator. Many users on Reddit and other forums have reported that the door lock actuators in 2019 Nissan Altimas or new models 2020, 2021 and 2022 can fail, resulting in doors that won’t lock or unlock either with the key fob or even manually. This problem can affect one or multiple doors at a time and is often attributed to a defective actuator. Without warning, both sideview mirrors, plus the blindspot warning system began to not work. Mirror adjustments failed to work on both sides and also the blindspot warning light stopped working when a vehicle would pass. I proceeded to take my vehicle to Regal Nissan, Inc., located at 1090 Holcomb Bridge Road, Roswell, Georgia 30076, 770-998-8686 on December 19, 2023 at approximately 2:00pm, and was told by the Service Advisor, Deandre Gaines that they would not be able to look at it as the day was almost over and he scheduled an appointment for December 20, 2023 at 9:00am. Today, December 20, 2023, I attended my appointment arriving approximately 9:09am and spoke with Deandre Gaines. He told me that they would do a diagnostic check to find out what was causing this. I asked if the diagnostic check would be just for my arm rest where the control was or did he mean for the whole car, and he said no not the whole car only the arm rest, and he never stated the price. I told him that I would wait on the car, and proceeded to their customer waiting room. Once they were done, they tell me that the cost would be $175.88!!! I asked for what??? He tells me that because I have 39,747 miles and it is outside the the 36,000 mile warranty that this is what it cost for a diagnostic. I said, you never said the price!!! I had no idea that it would cost this much just for you to tell me this. He strong-armed me on the price. I then asked to speak to his manager (which I did not get his name) and the manager then said the same thing. I was so frustrated at how I strong-armed on this price. Deandre never stated the price. This is border line exhortation. He took my freedom away as a Georgia consumer by giving the price after the fact and not telling me the price before hand. This would not have been an issue if he had told me the price beforehand, as I would have had the choice to say yes or no. If additional documentation is needed, please let me know. ECM is causing my car to stay in a constant Malfunction state. The problem began in April 2023 and at first was intermittent. Now it stays in limp mode. The collision and traction control indicators stay on, as well as the check engine light. Two sensor codes came up and those were changed, but now the malfunction will not allow the codes to be cleared. This puts myself, passengers, and everyone else on the road in danger because when it malfunctions, it brakes without warning. Not to mention the amount of gas the car is using. The vehicle was inspected by a mechanic who stated it was the ECM causing it. This needs to be recalled.

The first incident was November 2021 with 24,163 miles. The dealer performed a zero-point reset. The second incident was January 2023 with 53,665 miles. The dealer again performed a zero-point reset but charged $170.03 to repair. The dealer told me this is not covered by my extended warranty. The dealer told me if it happened again they would have to replace the sensor and it will cost approximately $1000 - and it is not covered by my Nissan VSC extended warranty. Now it malfunctioned for the 3rd time in May 2023 with 57,155 miles. This appears to be a known issue for Nissan with TSB NTB19-071. I am frustrated that Nissan is asking for payment to replace a faulty sensor that affects air bag deployment in an accident. I believe this is a safety issue that Nissan should pay to replace. My ask is for Nissan to recall these vehicles or voluntarily replace the faulty sensors at no cost to the vehicle owner.

Please note that I have my car regularly inspected for oil changes and maintenance. The adaptive cruise control stopped working August 2022. The car displays "malfunction" on the dashboard. This was inconvenient and at first intermittent, but I did not think it was putting any persons safety at risk. I went to a local Nissan dealership in NJ and they stated it would cost $600 to replace, but no safety issues. Therefore I did not get this fixed at the time. On March 14 2023, I was merging onto a highway in daylight around 4pm. It had started flurrying, but no changes in visibility. There was no car immediately in front of me. The collision warning suddenly came on and the emergency brakes were activated while attempting to accelerate onto a 65 mph highway in NJ. It was extremely startling. It certainly could have caused an accident, especially when vehicles are accelerating to merge onto a highway. I was fortunate that there was no car immediately behind me. On April 26 and 27 2023, the emergency brake was activated again due to a collision warning while in a parking garage. The only correlation I can think that ties these occurrences is when driving from a shaded to sunny location. All three times it also occurred during acceleration. This new problem is quite concerning and dangerous.

My fiancé and I were driving late at night on a straight, one lane road going just over 40 mph with NOTHING in front of us. For no reason the pre-collision front sensor went off indicating we had the potential of hitting the vehicle in front of us even though there was nothing there. Moments later the dashboard went white showing a red triangle and the automatic braking system came on engaging all the brakes and abruptly reducing the vehicle's speed to approximately 15mph before it disengaged. That this time we had no control over the speed of the vehicle and could only steer the car to the side of the road. Had another vehicle been behind us there would have been an awful accident where us and the driver behind us would have been injured as there is no way anyone could have anticipated such an inappropriate speed change at that time. I brought the vehicle into the dealership days later. They could not duplicate my concern. They found past trouble codes of C1A16 & C1A17 on the vehicle's history. They recommended calibrating the distance sensor and road tests but were not confident this would fix the problem and stated a new sensor may need to be purchased. Upon experiencing this traumatic event in my Nissan vehicle I posted my experience on Facebook and had 3 people I personally know reach out to me saying they experienced similar events in their Nissan. The Nissan Infotainment System Crashes when connected to Apple Carplay when you receive a call from Microsoft Teams, or attempt to make a call from Microsoft Teams. This is a significant Safety Hazard as many individuals travel via Car for their Jobs and many Companies heavily utilize Microsoft Teams for Meetings, especially as a result of the Pandemic. The transmission failed /malfunctioned. It’s available for inspection upon request. My safety and the safety of others was put at risk when the vehicle stalled at a traffic light or in the middle of traffic. Took the vehicle to autozone to be scanned and they confirmed it was the transmission. The vehicle has not been inspected by the dealer yet because I would have to paid between $200-350 to have the vehicle towed to the dealership where the vehicle was purchased which is two hours away. The local dealership charges $130 to diagnosis my vehicle. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the failure. The CVT message appeared on my dashboard after the vehicle stalled and would not accelerate more than 5 miles or would not move at all upon acceleration of the gas. In addition to the current transmission issue, I have also had the brake light switch adjusted twice. The failure of the brake light switch drained the vehicle battery resulting in having the battery replaced as well.

The Automatic Emergency Braking System continuously brakes and slows the car down when driving. One particular incident happened on 6/15/2021 when I was travelling at 45MPH and there we cars behind me. The system beeped as if it detected a crash and then stop the car. There were no other cars in front on me and I almost got into an accident because of the sudden braking. There were no warning lamps, messages, or anything else that would prompt the vehicle to immediately break. It has done this 3 more times in the last two weeks and its hazardous to me and other drivers on the road. Now every time I put my vehicle in drive it says AEB malfunction and the vehicle no longer detects forward collisions or any passengers. I haven't taken the vehicle to the dealership yet; however, I had an oil change and when the dealer inspected my vehicle they said everything was in good shape. I'm not sure how this was missed.

Dealership states they suspect "there's not many AWD Altimas to cause a recall." The fact that both vehicles utilize the same exact AWD system including the same cuppling with the same part # should warrant a recall across all vehicles utilizing that system , not just one .

The Check engine light came on and I took it to Nissan dealer. My car is at 39,000 mileage. On the previous Nissan Altima (2016) I had, the same thing happened while I was driving from Minnesota to Louisville. We almost crashed at Chicago due to some engine issue. When I arrived to Louisville, KY, I stopped by Nissan dealership and ask them what happen and they told me it will take up to two weeks to fix but recommended to get a new vehicle. I had no choice but to change to a new 2019 Nissan. Now the same thing is happening to this new Nissan Altima and Nissan is not willing to fix the issue without charge. This is very frustrating. I been having issue with the door not unlocking with a remote and they fixed it once and now I have the same issue they are willing to fix again. But My main concern is not the door but the engine light they refuse to fix. Please help.

THE FIRST TIME IT WAS JUST ME IN THE CAR WITH VERY LITTLE TRAFFIC AROUND ME, WHEREAS WITH THE MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE THE TRAFFIC WAS HEAVIER. I HAD MY MOTHER AND 2 YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE BACKSEAT, WITH A TRUCK THAT LOOKED LIKE A F-150 NOT FAR BEHIND ME. MAY 1ST, 2019 I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT A RATE OF 70 MILES PER HOUR ON INTERSTATE 25 IN DENVER, COLORADO AND THE CAR COMPLETELY STALLED OUT. THE COMPUTER SCREEN INSTRUCTED ME TO SHIFT THE CAR INTO PARK. IT TOOK ME APPROXIMATELY 3 MINUTES TO GET THE CAR TO START AGAIN VIA THE PUSH TO START BUTTON. THIS WAS OCCURRING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSTATE DURING HEAVY VOLUME OF TRAFFIC. DEALERSHIP CLAIMS IT WAS NOT NORMAL BUT COULD NOT TELL ME WHY. JUNE 26TH, 2019 THE VEHICLE AGAIN STALLED OUT WITHOUT WARNING WHILE I WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH ON COLORADO BLVD. IN DENVER, CO. THE VEHICLE AGAIN PROMPTED ME VIA THE COMPUTER TO SHIFT THE CAR INTO PARK. I THEN SHIFTED AND PUSHED THE PUSH TO START BUTTON AND IT DID RESTART. BOTH INSTANCES THE CAR WAS IN MOTION AT HIGH SPEEDS, ONCE WAS HIGHWAY THE OTHER A BUSY STREET. I WAS GOING STRAIGHT BOTH TIMES. I WAS BREAKING SLIGHTLY BOTH TIMES. COMPLETELY UNSAFE VEHICLE.

WHEN USING THE WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUID IT BARELY SHOOTS OUT. IT ONLY COVER 1/4 OF THE WHOLE WINDSHIELD. THIS BECAME VERY DANGEROUS WHEN I WAS DRIVING BACK HOME IN THE HIGHWAY WHEN LOVEBUGS COVERED MY WINDSHIELD.

WHILE DRIVING ALONG A HIGHWAY IN THE MIDDLE LANE, MY FIANC HEARD A LOUD NOISE THAT SOUNDED LIKE A LOUD BANG. HE THOUGHT SOMETHING HAD FALLEN ON TOP OF THE SUNROOF BUT FOUND IT STRANGE BECAUSE THERE WAS NO TREES AROUND FOR THAT TO HAPPEN. WHEN HE STOPPED AND GOT OUT OF THE CAR, HE FOUND THAT THE ENTIRE WINDSHIELD HAD SHATTERED INTO LITTLE PIECES. LUCKILY HE WAS NOT INJURED AND NO GLASS CAME THROUGH THE CAR BECAUSE THE SHIELD WAS CLOSED. THERE WERE NO DENT OR IMPACT MARKS ON THE SUNROOF OR ANY PART OF THE CAR. WHEN WE HAD A MECHANIC LOOK AT IT, HE TOLD US THAT THE BREAK BAND FROM THE INSIDE AND WAS ALMOST 'PUSHED UP' IN A WAY. NISSAN HAD DENIED OUR CLAIM, AND PAYING THE DEDUCTIBLE AND GETTING IT FIXED, I STILL HEAR A RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM ABOVE.

CAR ENGINE RUNNING PARKED IN DRIVEWAY. I WAS IN THE HOUSE. SON WAS ON PORCH. YELLED THAT CAR WAS MOVING. WHEN IT SAW THAT IT WAS BACKING UP I RAN TO TRY TO STOP IT. THE CAR BACKED DOWN MY DRIVEWAY, WHICH WAS FLAT WITH NO INCLINE, TO THE STREET, ACROSS THE STREET AND INTO THE NEIGHBOR'S HOUSE. THE STREET IS QUIET A BIT HIGHER THAN DRIVEWAY BUT IT SEEMED TO PICK UP SPEED WHEN IT WENT OVER IT. I REACHED IT RIGHT AS IT HIT THE NEIGHBORS HOUSE. I CALLED POLICE DEPT. VEHICLE WAS IN PARK THE ENTIRE TIME. I TOOK IT TO NISSAN DEALERSHIP BUT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING THAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED IT TO DO THAT. IF MY HANDICAP SON HAD BEEN GETTING IN VEHICLE WHEN THIS OCCURRED IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED HIM SERIOUS INJURY AND COULD HAVE CAUSED ANYONE THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN PASSING ON THE STREET OR IN THE NEIGHBORS YARD TO BE INJURED. NEIGHBOR IS AN OLDER MAN AND HE WAS QUITE SHAKEN UP. THE IMPACT SHOOK HIS HOUSE QUITE A BIT. I HAVE BEEN AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. WILL SUPPLY POLICE REPORT WHEN IT IS AVAILABLE FROM THE POLICE DEPT.

I BECAME AWARE OF THE AUTOMATIC WINDSHIELD WASHER PROBLEM WHEN I TRIED TO CLEAR OFF DUST AND GRIME FROM OUR NEW 2019 NISSAN ALTIMA WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. WHEN I ACTIVATED THE WASHERS TO CLEAN THE WINDSHIELD, THE WASHER FLUID BARELY SPLASHED ONTO THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD. I HAD TO REPEATEDLY ACTIVATE THE SYSTEM TO EVEN GET THE WINDSHIELD PARTLY CLEAN. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY TO GET THE PROBLEM FIXED. TO MY CHAGRIN, I WAS TOLD NO ONE ELSE HAD COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND THAT THE WASHERS OPERATE AS THEY WERE DESIGNED TO DO. BUT I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THE PLACEMENT OF THE WINDSHIELD WASHER NOZZLES UNDER THE HOOD RESULTS IN THE FLUID STREAM HITTING THE UNDERSIDE OF THE HOOD FIRST AND THEN IT ONLY PARTLY HITS THE WINDSHIELD ABOUT 1/3 OF THE WAY UP ON THE WINDSHIELD. I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND AN INEPT DESIGN FLAW BECAUSE THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY CANNOT ADJUST THE FLUID STREAM TO SHOOT UP ON THE WINDSHIELD THE WAY EVERY OTHER CAR IN THE WORLD DOES. I HAVE TO LIVE WITH A BARELY CLEANABLE WINDSHIELD BECAUSE SOME DESIGNER NEVER TRIED OUT THE WASHERS IN THE REAL WORLD. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS SAFETY PROBLEM.

DEFECTIVE REARVIEW 'ANTI-GLARE' MIRROR HARDLY REDUCES ANY LIGHT AT NIGHT FROM VEHICLES BEHIND THE CAR. ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE WITHOUT DISTRACTION OR BLINDING LIGHT. THIS IS A DEFECT IN MANUFACTURING AND SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH A DESIGN THAT REDUCES LIGHT AT NIGHT. AS IS, THIS IS A DANGEROUS DESIGN, WHICH CAN CAUSE A COLLISION DUE TO THE BLINDING LIGHT THAT IS NEARLY UNCONTROLLABLE. YOU CAN SEE FROM THE PHOTOS THE MIRROR IS FUNCTIONING BUT IT'S ABSOLUTELY A TERRIBLE DESIGN THAT ALMOST DOESN'T REDUCE LIGHT AT ALL.

Component Failure Cascade Risk

Known patterns where one defect leads to more severe downstream failures

CriticalEGR issue detected

Head gasket failure and engine overheating — EGR cooler failure is the leading cause of catastrophic engine failure on diesel engines

HighFUEL PUMP issue detected

Engine stalling at speed — fuel delivery failure can cause sudden loss of power in traffic or on highways

HighABS issue detected

Loss of brake assist and ABS in emergency — can significantly extend stopping distances

HighDEF issue detected

Engine derate or no-start condition — DEF system failure puts vehicle into limp mode limiting speed to 5mph

Chart Analysis

The blue line shows 221 total NHTSA complaints filed over 9 years, with the worst year being 2025 (40 complaints, including 2 crash reports).

The amber reliability line is declining — recent years score around 10/100, lower than earlier in the vehicle's life. This pattern indicates issues are accumulating over time rather than being resolved, which is a concern for used buyers.

The recalls (red dashed lines) followed the first complaints by 1 year — a typical response window; neither unusually fast nor a pattern of denial.

Red dots on the amber line flag 8 years (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.

Nissan CVT Extended Warranty (Jatco JF016 / JF017)
Transmission – CVT (Jatco JF016E / JF017E)
COVERAGE:Extended to 5 years / 60,000 miles; some class action settlements provide additional coverage

Nissan's Jatco continuously variable transmissions (CVT) suffer from overheating, shuddering, sudden deceleration, and premature failure. Nissan extended the CVT warranty following class action lawsuits. In some cases the warranty was extended further to 84,000 miles for documented repeat-failure vehicles. A class action settlement (Ponzio v. Nissan) provided additional reimbursement rights.

HOW TO CLAIM: Contact Nissan Consumer Affairs (1-800-647-7261) and provide your VIN to check for any CVT extended warranty applicable to your specific model year and variant. Ask the dealer to check for any open special coverage authorizations in their warranty system.

Coverage eligibility depends on your VIN, original sale date, and current mileage. Always verify with an authorized dealer or manufacturer customer service — programs may have been updated since this database was compiled.
