Critical Deferred Risk
Critical deferred failure risk — 4 safety-critical or high-cost components are past their service interval. Without immediate attention, repair costs will compound significantly.
No odometer data on record. Mileage is estimated at ~108,000 mi based on average annual driving. Items marked EST. OVERDUE may already be due — verify service history with the seller. Items marked OVERDUE are confirmed past-due based on vehicle age alone.
DUE SOONCriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Service interval: 120,000 mi · Est. ~108,000 mi (no odometer on record)
Schedule Timing Chain Tensioner service before 120,000 mi
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
EST. OVERDUECriticalWater Pump
Service interval: 8 yr · Vehicle age: 9 yr · Past due by age
Service Water Pump immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 8 yr interval
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
EST. OVERDUEHighTransmission Fluid / Service
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 9 yr · Past due by age
Service Transmission Fluid / Service immediately — already past the 60,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
EST. OVERDUEHighDifferential / Transfer Case Fluid
Service interval: 4 yr · Vehicle age: 9 yr · Past due by age
Service Differential / Transfer Case Fluid immediately — already past the 50,000 mi / 4 yr interval
On 4WD/AWD vehicles, neglected differential or transfer case fluid causes metal-on-metal wear. Replacement costs $1,500–$4,000.
EST. OVERDUEHighCoolant Flush
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 9 yr · Past due by age
Service Coolant Flush immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
EST. OVERDUEModerateSpark Plugs (iridium/platinum)
Service interval: 8 yr · Vehicle age: 9 yr · Past due by age
Service Spark Plugs (iridium/platinum) immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 8 yr interval
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
DUE SOONModerateFuel Injectors
Service interval: 120,000 mi · Est. ~108,000 mi (no odometer on record)
Schedule Fuel Injectors service before 120,000 mi
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.

Engine blew at less than 80,000 miles

ODI #11731050ENGINE

My engine starting making a knocking/ticking noise out of no where. I was traveling alone on the highway so I stopped to check it. I got to a gas station and google searched it and it came up that the LS 6.2 engine that is in my vehicle was recalled on other models because of this issue. I did have a mechanic look at it as well and he agreed it is that same issue that was recalled in other models.

ODI #11730014POWER TRAIN

The 2017 GMC Yukon has serious transmission issues that GM continues to ignore, and it is going to get someone hurt. I was stopped at a red light, and when it turned green, I pressed the gas pedal but the car would not move. I pressed harder, and then it suddenly lurched forward about 30 feet. If there had been a car in front of me, I would have hit them and likely caused injuries. When I took it to the dealership, they said it needed a full transmission replacement, which was not covered. I had to pay out of pocket. I was only about $10,000 outside the warranty when it failed, and GM refused to stand behind their product or help in any way. I was already financing the vehicle and should not have had to pay for a new transmission on a car that was less than four years old with relatively low miles. This is not just my experience. Many others have had the same issue. GM knows about it and chooses not to acknowledge it. They are lucky no one has been seriously injured or killed because of it. Going to attach all of the proof of people "coincidentally" experiencing the same issue.

ODI #11728048POWER TRAIN

The 8-speed automatic transmission (Hydra-Matic 8L90) on this 2017 GMC Yukon SLT 5.3L V8 has failed. This is a repeat failure — the transmission was previously rebuilt in 2020 under a GM recall/service action for the same known defect affecting this transmission type. The transmission has now failed again in 2026, approximately six years after GM's prior repair. Prior to failure, the vehicle exhibited hard shifting, shuddering during acceleration, and hesitation between gear changes — symptoms consistent with the known defect pattern documented across 2015–2019 GM vehicles equipped with this transmission. The failure was confirmed by a service center. The vehicle is currently not safely drivable. Safety concern: erratic and unpredictable gear changes, including sudden lurching and hesitation during acceleration, create a dangerous condition for the driver, passengers, and other vehicles on the road. GM has been contacted through their Customer Assistance Center (case opened). GM's initial position was that they cannot assist because the vehicle is out of warranty. However, this is a repeat failure of a previously repaired known defect. GM issued 13+ technical service bulletins on this transmission and has been aware of the root defect since at least 2018. A federal class action (Speerly v. General Motors, E.D. Michigan) covering this exact vehicle type and transmission has been certified and upheld by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. The prior GM repair did not remediate the underlying defect.

Slipping Gears: Many Yukon Denali owners report experiencing unexpected gear changes or loss of power while driving. Hard Shifting: This problem manifests as harsh or abrupt gear changes, often accompanied by noticeable jolts when shifting from one gear to another. Unusual Noises: Grinding, whining, or clunking sounds when shifting There has been a class action lawsuit for this. I'm not sure why it has not been recalled in all states.

My truck lost power while I was driving. Took to a shop and they found that a had a bad lifter. I have all of my service records from the GMC dealership where I had my vehicle serviced on a regular basis.

ODI #11707478SERVICE BRAKESCRASH

This has been going on for a while now, but it’s getting worse overtime. If I push on my brakes more than twice the brake pedal locks up and I have to push extremely hard to get my vehicle stopped.. luckily I have never been going fast and had to worry about this. This is normally when I am pulling into a parking spot or I am backing up that I have to tap on my brakes a few times. A couple of times I have bumped the pole in front of my parking spot due to not having brakes. I just put in a general date as to when they started to get worse.

ODI #11707493ENGINE

I started noticing issues with my transmission around 55,000 miles on it. It first started with no noticing that it wouldn’t gear down when it needed to, and then when it finally did gear down, it would really jerk the vehicle. I started calling GMC then and questioning and putting in a claim. Just went back-and-forth four months. Now it was getting worse to where I could feel the transmission slipping it wouldn’t kick into upper gear or lower gear. Again, I was still calling GMC and reporting these issues. I was told to take it and have a transmission oil change, which I did costing me $300. I still noticed this problem and I continue to call. I kept being told that they would have somebody call me back which nobody ever called me back to find out specifics. I took it to a GMC garage have them put it on a machine, and I was told that it needed a new transmission and this wasn’t something GMC was covering. This new transmission cost me $6200 and was done on 1/5/25. Please remember this vehicle only had 64,000 miles on it, which is absolutely ridiculous to need a transmission at this mileage. I again had called in January 2025 reporting this and was told someone would call me back and never heard from them.

Sitting at stop light engine began running rough and smoke coming out. CEL came on and began flashing, pulled over and had it towed. Diagnosis was PO300 misfire, dead miss on cylcinder 4, cylinder plug 4 is fuel fouled, cois is fine has good spark- caused by failed lifters. Needs engine replacement. Vehicle always serviced, garage kept and in mint condition with 89K miles.

ODI #11704527ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

The contact owns a 2017 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that the lifters were previously replaced in 2021 at the manufacturer's expense. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the engine was running rough. The vehicle was taken to an unknown auto part store, where it was diagnosed with an engine cylinder malfunction. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was determined that the engine had experienced lifter failure or a more severe failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed by the dealer, and that the manufacturer might help in covering the cost of the repair. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: EA25007 (Engine, Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 81,638.

At parking lot speeds, there have been many incedents of brake failure, when pressing pedal to stop pedal pulsates and becomes very hard to stop the yukon. there seems to be a vacume or booster issue. Yukon will be fine for days then reaccure when slowing at stop sign or waitng at red light and moving foward in slow traffic to sign or llight and then in happens again. scary and unreliable when using brakes at low speed intersections or continous stop and go's

We noticed the passenger side taillight was out. It’s not a simple bulb replacement but an entire assembly. It was put back in place and it lit up again. A few weeks later it wasn’t working. Pounded and tapped on it and it works again. We're guessing there is some sort of short so we asked for an estimate on getting an assembly replacement when it was in for a regular oil change. Shocked that a necessary part would cost $1,112.77!!! Whatever happened to changing a bulb for a few dollars?

The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that assistance would not be provided because the warranty had expired. The failure mileage was approximately 78,000.

My vehicle started making a knocking sound and eventually died on me. I barely made it to a repair shop to check out my vehicle, but had to get it towed back to my home from the repair shop after they told me my engine failed. This happened around 118,000 mileage. I found out that this issue is very common and needs to be addressed for this year and model vehicle. It could have ended very badly for me as I was on the interstate when it happened. Now, my vehicle is sitting and I am unable to use it. Engine would cost me over $12k for cost and repairs.

Yukon break tail lamp problems. Brake lights work intermittently. Very dangerous! The break lights will work intermittently and then work. The vehicle main information cluster randomly goes in and out and now has completely stopped working. This is the information display that shows Park, Nuetral, Drive, Reverse, Fuel gauge, digital MPH and other information such as oil tire pressure, turn signals, forward collision. Just knowing if the vehicle is in Park Reverse or Drive is a huge saftey issue. This seems to be a common problem on GM vehicles and i wcan't seem to find a recall issued for the saftey factor that the vehicle can be assumed to be in Park and it's actually in Reverse. The first time I noticed this problem was Sept. 05, 2020 but it had reset when I restarted the vehicle. The problem would resurface occasionally but always came back on when restarting the vehicle. But know it seems that restarting the vehicle is not fixing the problem and the screen has been blank for the last 3 days.

I was driving my car and it started making "clanging" and "banging" noises and jolting/jerking forward. It was scary to drive because of the noise and the jerking foward. I was afraid that my car was going to just stop working, I would get stuck/stranded somewhere or my car was going to blow up. I brought it in to the dealer two times. The first time they thought it was the battery so they replaced the battery but that didn't fix the problem. The second time I left it there for days and they told me that I needed a new transmission. The problem was reproduced and inspected by them. There were no warning lights or messages prior to the failure. The problem started on approximately January 6, 2025. Online, I have read from other sources that 2017 - 2020 GMC YUKONS are know to have transmission problems. My car only has 58,000 miles on it, has been serviced consistently, and should not need a new transmission at this low mileage point.( 150,000 to 200,000 is the norm for transmission replacement)

Not even 100,000 miles on it and the engine blew. Started with a lifter issue. Everyone I talk to with Yukons and GMC in general say it’s a problem. Just a search on the internet shows that they all have this issue… a well maintained car should not have this issue and it’s clearly a GMC issue and it needs to be fixed. The repair shop can’t even order me a new engine due to this being a real problem all over with GMC.

I am submitting this complaint regarding a persistent and significant transmission issue with my 2017 GMC Yukon Denali, which I purchased in June 2024. The transmission has been malfunctioning, causing the vehicle to jerk and hesitate, particularly during acceleration. This component is available for inspection upon request. Safety Concerns: This issue poses a serious risk to my safety and the safety of others on the road. The jerking and hesitation during operation can result in delayed acceleration or unexpected speed changes. These problems have occurred while merging into traffic and driving on highways, creating hazardous situations where immediate and reliable vehicle performance is critical. Reproduction and Inspection: The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by an independent mechanic who inspected the vehicle. The diagnosis identified a transmission malfunction, which appears consistent with reports from other owners of GMC Yukon models. However, the vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. Warning Symptoms: There were no warning lamps or error messages displayed prior to the onset of the issue. The jerking and hesitation began soon after I purchased the vehicle in June 2024 and have progressively worsened over time. I have discovered that GMC has issued recalls for similar transmission issues in later Yukon models (2021 and 2022). However, despite widespread complaints, earlier models like my 2017 Yukon Denali have not been included in these recalls. Given the safety risks associated with this transmission defect and the frequency of similar complaints from other owners, I urge the NHTSA to investigate this matter. Prompt action is essential to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers in affected vehicles and to hold the manufacturer accountable for addressing this defect.

Vehicle Malfunction Incident Report On [11/2724], while stopped at a traffic light, the vehicle experienced a sudden and significant loss of power and gear shifting capabilities. The engine accelerated, but the vehicle struggled to move and shift gears, making it difficult to cross the intersection. After a short distance, the vehicle accelerated again, but there was no forward movement. The vehicle was subsequently parked in a nearby neighborhood, where it became completely immobile. Attempts to engage reverse or drive were unsuccessful. The vehicle emitted a loud noise, and a check of the transmission fluid and other fluids revealed no issues. After turning the engine off and restarting, the vehicle was able to engage drive, but it was limited to second gear. The vehicle then lost momentum again, making it difficult to reach home. It is important to note that no engine light illuminated during the incident, and there were no visible fluid leaks. All routine maintenance has been performed according to the manufacturer's recommendations. A mechanic has inspected the vehicle and diagnosed potential transmission issues. Requested Action: We request a thorough investigation into the cause of this malfunction. We believe that a transmission issue is the likely culprit, but further diagnostic testing is necessary to confirm the exact problem. We have seen that this has been a reported issues with these vehicle and the manufacture has not done anything for recalls.

This happened 5 years ago but I never reported it. GMC 2017 Yukon. I put my SUV in park, and entered and exited it several times while parked in my driveway. When I went to grab my purse (standing at drivers side door, reaching for purse on passenger seat) the car rolled. I was on a sloped driveway. The car rolled backwards, and I tried to jam it into park more strongly, but it just made a grinding noise and kept going. I was knocked over by the car door, pulled under the car and ended up having my legs run over by the car. I sustained injuries which affect me to this day. I was transported to the hospital by an ambulance after a 911 call, so I presume there is a police report. I was injured and dazed. This happened on [XXX]. I am only reporting it now since I never thought about doing so before I read an article today about cars being recalled for this problem. If other people have my model of car and this is a problem, I would want them to know. I was thinking maybe I hit the gear shift with my purse and knocked it out of park, but this should not have happened without the brake depressed. I was standing next to the drivers side door when this happened. I did have the car taken to the dealership to be examined, and they said it was ok, but could not really explain how this happened. I still have this SUV but am very cautious about any situation where the car could roll when in park and cause injury. The car crashed into a tree and that stopped the rolling. Has there been other reports of this happening with this model of car? I would like to know, because if there is a problem that has come to light in this, I will get a different vehicle! They consistently break in 2 places, leaving the vehicle with no tail lights/stip lights. GM knows of the issue , but since it’s NOT CONSIDERED a Safety Issue, they do nothing. It’s clearly a safety issue, as following drivers may not see lights, on the rear. The engine light has come on spuradically for the last 1.5 years and has been consistently on since May of 2023. This starting approx. 95,000 miles. During this time after starting the Yukon it is chuggy and missing, as I drive off it jerks and darts forward. Seems to be when I stop and start to go this happens, again engine light is always on...sometimes flashing. Starting 9/19/23 (106,000 miles) when slowing down to turn into a parking lot the engine revved high, no movement with the touch of the gas pedal and suddenly takes off with a jerk and a squeal of the tires. VERY SCARY. Since then I have experienced this DAILY, at least once a day. So far it is when I am going slow, either taking off and accelerating or slowing down. The engine and RPMS rev up and go high with no way of moving when touching the gas pedal then suddenly jerks and takes off with the tires squealing. I am also experiencing the transmission shifting VERY hard, mainly when slowing down. I am feeling very timid and scared to drive this vehicle...this is a seriously dangerous situation and can cause a serious accident or life! I believe this fits into the description of the GM Class Action Lawsuit filed over transmission problems. When I previously talked to the dealership they kept saying that there was no recall for the problems and to bring it in. I am not going to continue to get things fixed that do not fix this problem, as I have already. First problem started back in May.. it’s went downhill ever since. Hard shifting was happening. GM dealer said I needed a new transmission. Found out from local repair shop that I needed a torque converter ($600) multiple transmission fluid changes (apparently many issues for A Lot of people) changed that. Then had to change Valve Body & TCM. ($540) everything started working but not 100% did a full tune up having multiple misfires constantly then shuttering when idle. Also replaced ECM ($200+)After changing all spark plugs, wires, oil, etc. the AC was having issues had been having issues for months. Kept adding Freon had to replace AC Condenser (works great now, was told by repair shop that’s also very common in these year models. Condensers are all weak in the same spot) just recently October 2022, my instrument cluster started going haywire. Gauges going off and on screens going blank. Had Alternator and battery tested both test fine. No loss of power but when hitting the start/stop vehicle would continue to run and lock and unlock when it wanted. Husband took the alternator out to have it tested again. They tested 3x 1st. Good, 2nd Error, 3rd Bad ( it was overcharging at 16.5V) replaced Alternator ($290) gauges still going haywire, like before it is only sometimes, when they do it’s bad bad.. but I can also drive to town and back 20-30 miles and not the first issue. Just left GM with a new Battery Distribution Fuse Block ($153) because of course it can’t just be a regular ($8-10) mega fuse, hopefully this will fix my issue. We pay too much money for this vehicle to have all of these issues & none be under warranty. I’ve been having the TAILLIGHT ISSUES as well ever since I purchased the car in 2018. When I received the recall on the taillight it was 6 years up to 72,000 & of course my vehicle had 79k miles on it at that time so that’s wasn’t covered.

I purchased a 2017 GMC Yukon Denali brand new off the showroom floor. I have maintained the services thru GMC dealership. I had to replace the struts and rear and front shocks due to hydraulic system leaking and locking up my brakes and causing extra pressure on my braking system to stop my vehicle. This cost me over $5000 to replace out of my pocket and I saw there was a previous recall in 2019 for similar problem but i was told my issues were not covered under the recall. I have also had to replace both taillights within 2years of purchasing my brand new vehicle and now they are out again. This will be my second time having to replace the LED tail lights that cost over $375 light which were stated as never go out of lifetime guarantee. You cannot just replace the bulb you have to replace the whole tail light which takes weeks to come in and then additional labor costs. The previous

My vehicle began shuddering during acceleration and would violently jerk forward after gas pedal was engaged with decreased power in forward acceleration and increase in rpm. This last a couple of weeks. Now, my vehicle is completely broke down and at a GM certified service center. The Service manager states torque converter completely went out and the transmission is burnt up. The mileage is at $61,000, so GM warranty won’t cover it and the company that holds the extended warranty I purchased hasn’t been able to be successfully contacted. There is a “service” bulletin but no recalls and a class action lawsuit (that I’m not a part of) but no recall. My vehicle completely lost power going 50mph on a busy road without warning. This needs to be a recall due to this dangerous circumstance.

Taillights and Brake light LEDs go out unexpectedly or work intermittently creating a safety hazard that drivers behind the Yukon are unable to see your taillights at night or when your braking causing Potential rear end collisions. LED taillights have both gone out. One was replaced by a "service bulliten" and it didn't cost us. The other recently went out at approx 80k miles. These are supposed to last the life of the vehicle. Replacement cost is $750. After doing research, there is a recall for 2015-2016 GMC Yukon taillights that are the exact same product. I contacted GMC and they refuse to replace the known defect part. The remaining class attached to the vehicle was all shattered. There was shattered class on the closed shade. We didn't know what happened. It was very traumatizing. THIS MEANS I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REGISTER MY VEHICLE WITH MY STATE AS IT WILL NOT PASS SMOG INSPECTION WITH A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO REGISTER IT DUE TO THE DMV CLOSURE FROM COVID-19. ITS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE A VEHICLE THAT CAN STALL AT ANY MOMENT AND IS IMPOSSIBLE TO FIX WITHOUT WAITING FOR PARTS. THESE PARTS ARE OBVIOUSLY ON BACK-ORDER SO LONG BECAUSE THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. I FOUND A SERVICE BULLETIN FROM NHTSA ( DCS5097 ) WHICH COVERS MY PROBLEM EXACTLY. BUT FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON, SPECIAL COVERAGE ONLY APPLIES TO 13 STATES. I BELIEVE THIS IS A MUCH MORE WIDESPREAD PROBLEM THAN THOUGHT AND I BELIEVE MY SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF THOSE AROUND ME IS AT RISK IF I DRIVE THIS VEHICLE. GM CANNOT AFFORD A RECALL BECAUSE OF THE SIZE OF THE PROBLEM, SEVERAL DEATHS WILL OCCUR UNTIL THIS ISSUE IS RESOLVED. THE ISSUE HAPPENS ON THE ROADWAYS

WHILE DRIVING AT SLOW SPEEDS THE TRANSMISSION WILL SUDDENLY SHIFT EXTREMELY HARD INTO FIRST GEAR WHEN WHILE LIGHTLY INCREASING SPEED. THE TRANSMISSION WILL SHIFT EXTREMELY HARD INTO FIRST GEAR WHILE GRADUALLY COMING TO A STOP. OCCASIONALLY WHILE DRIVING SLOWLY (PARKING LOTS) THE TRANSMISSION UPSHIFTS TO SECOND GEAR CAUSING THE CAR TO LURCH FORWARD NEARLY CAUSING A COLLISION. THIS IS A CONTINUING PROBLEM THAT CANNOT BE REPAIRED AT THE DEALERSHIP.

I PURCHASED MY 2017 YUKON DENALI IN 2017. SINCE THE DAY I BOUGHT IT I HAVE NOTICED A PROBLEM WITH APPEARS TO BE THE TRANSMISSION. I WILL BE AT A STOP THEN I ACCELERATE AND THE CAR HAS A HARD SHIFT FORWARD. IT TENDS TO PULL FORWARD ALL OF A SUDDEN BUT VERY VIOLENTLY. I HAVE TAKEN IN MY YUKON TO THE TWO GMC DELERSHIPS IN MY AREA SEVERAL TIMES. THEY HAVE SERVICED IT AND EVEN PERFORMED A TRANSMISSION FLUSH BUT STILL THE PROBLEM HAS ALWAYS CONTINUED. I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS YUKON PROBLEM FOR TWO YEARS NOW. ITS SO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE.

I HAVE TAKEN IT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIME FOR INSPECTION. THE FIRST TIME INVOLVED A REPEATED VIBRATION WHILE DRIVING. THE RESOLUTION WAS TO CHANGE OR FLUSH THE TRANSMISSION FLUID TO GET RID OF ANY METAL SHAVINGS. SINCE THEN I'VE TAKEN IT BACK INTO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE WITH REPORTS OF JERKING, A DELAYED START WHEN ACCELERATING, AND MOST RECENTLY A LURCHING WHEN SHIFTING BETWEEN REVERSE AND DRIVE. EACH TIME THEY HAVE SAID THIS IS NORMAL.

ODI #11153101SERVICE BRAKES

MY HUSBAND AND I WERE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 70 MPH WHEN HE NEEDED TO SLOW DOWN AND NOTICED THE BRAKES ON THE YUKON WERE NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. MORE SPECIFICALLY, THE BRAKES WOULD NOT FUNCTION THE FIRST 3-4 TIMES WHEN THEY WERE APPLIED OR TAPPED, BUT THEREAFTER THE BRAKES WOULD BECOME HARD AND HE HAD TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AS HARD AS HE COULD BUT WITH LITTLE TO NO STOPPING ABILITY. THE 'BRAKE ASSIST' LIGHT CAME ON. HAD WE BEEN IN ANY TRAFFIC OR ON A SHORTER ROAD, WE WOULD HAVE SURELY CRASHED INTO SOMEONE AND IT COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC CONSIDERING WE LIVE IN DALLAS WHERE THERE IS A LOT OF TRAFFIC. THIS DAY WE WERE VERY LUCKY! GM HAD ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN #PIT5361B WHICH AFFECTED MULTIPLE YEARS AND CLASSES OF VEHICLES TO INCLUDE THE 2015 YUKON. GM ACKNOWLEDGED THAT 'A CUSTOMER MAY COMMENT ON A HARD BRAKE PEDAL OR THAT INCREASED EFFORT IS NEEDED TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL.' AS EVIDENCE OF THE DEFECT, GM NOTIFIED ITS DEALERS, 'WHILE PERFORMING NORMAL DIAGNOSTICS, FLUID MAY BE FOUND IN THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND/OR THE BOOSTER VACUUM LINE.' HOWEVER, WE CALLED MULTIPLE DEALERSHIPS WITHIN THE DFW AREA AND THEY ALL DENIED KNOWING ANY ISSUE WITH GM BRAKES FAILING OR THE VACUUM PUMP. INTERESTINGLY, THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT ON THIS VERY ISSUE AND GM ALSO ISSUED A SERIES OF SERVICE BULLETINS TO ITS DEALERS REGARDING THE BRAKE DEFECT, WITH THE LATEST BULLETIN DATED MARCH 15, 2017, TO INCLUDE THE 2015-2016 YUKON. OURS IS JUST A 2017, 1 YEAR OUTSIDE OF THAT. WHO IS TO SAY THIS YEAR ISN'T AFFECTED CONSIDERING PAST HISTORY OF THE BULLETINS. IT WAS THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY AND NO DEALERSHIP COULD EVEN GET TO IT BESIDES NOT KNOWING OF ANY 'ISSUE', EVEN THOUGH IT'S ALL OVER THE INTERNET.

IT IS SO ROUGH THAT IT FEELS LIKE SOMEONE MAY HAVE RAN INTO THE YOUR BACK BUMPER. IT IS ALSO BAD ENOUGH THAT IT STARTLES THE DRIVER AND COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE. GM IS SAYING THAT THIS IS NORMAL FOR THIS EIGHT SPEED TRANSMISSION. IF MY CAR, THE ONE I'M DRIVING NOW, HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM I WOULD DEFINITELY REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. THIS IS A 2017 DENALI WITH LESS THAN 5000 MILES ON IT. Chart Analysis

The blue line shows 191 total NHTSA complaints filed over 10 years, with the worst year being 2025 (40 complaints, including 1 crash report).

The amber reliability line is declining — recent years score around 21/100, lower than earlier in the vehicle's life. This pattern indicates issues are accumulating over time rather than being resolved, which is a concern for used buyers.

The recall (red dashed line) followed the first complaints by 2 years — a typical response window; neither unusually fast nor a pattern of denial.

Red dots on the amber line flag 4 years (2019, 2022, 2024, 2025) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.

GM AFM/DoD Lifter Special Coverage
Engine – Active Fuel Management Lifters (5.3L / 6.2L V8)
COVERAGE:10 years / 150,000 miles from original sale date

Active Fuel Management (AFM) lifters on 5.3L EcoTec3 and 6.2L V8 engines collapse prematurely, causing a metallic ticking noise, oil consumption, and potential engine damage. GM issued Special Coverage #N202338470 and related programs for affected vehicles.

HOW TO CLAIM: Visit any authorized Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, or Cadillac dealer. Provide your VIN — the dealer will confirm coverage via GM's warranty system. Repair includes lifter replacement and sometimes oil consumption correction.

GM 8-Speed Transmission Shudder Special Coverage
Transmission – 8L90 / 8L45 8-Speed Automatic
COVERAGE:7 years / 100,000 miles from original sale date

8-speed automatic transmissions (8L90 and 8L45) exhibit a shuddering or shaking sensation during light acceleration, especially at highway speeds. GM issued multiple TSBs and extended coverage programs. The fix involves a fluid exchange with a revised fluid formulation and, in persistent cases, torque converter replacement.

HOW TO CLAIM: Contact your GM dealer with your VIN. Multiple TSBs address this (PIP5353, PIP5555, etc.). If the fluid exchange does not resolve the shudder, the torque converter should be replaced under warranty.

Coverage eligibility depends on your VIN, original sale date, and current mileage. Always verify with an authorized dealer or manufacturer customer service — programs may have been updated since this database was compiled.
