Critical Deferred Risk
Critical deferred failure risk — 3 safety-critical or high-cost components are past their service interval. Without immediate attention, repair costs will compound significantly.
No odometer data on record. Mileage is estimated at ~108,000 mi based on average annual driving. Items marked EST. OVERDUE may already be due — verify service history with the seller. Items marked OVERDUE are confirmed past-due based on vehicle age alone.
DUE SOONCriticalTiming Chain Tensioner
Service interval: 120,000 mi · Est. ~108,000 mi (no odometer on record)
Schedule Timing Chain Tensioner service before 120,000 mi
Worn chain tensioners cause timing chain skip or snap — common on GM 5.3L/6.2L, Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi EA888, BMW N47/N63. Listen for cold-start rattles.
EST. OVERDUECriticalWater Pump
Service interval: 8 yr · Vehicle age: 9 yr · Past due by age
Service Water Pump immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 8 yr interval
Water pump failure causes rapid overheating. If the engine overheats even once, head gasket damage is likely — turning a $400 part into a $3,000+ repair.
EST. OVERDUEHighTransmission Fluid / Service
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 9 yr · Past due by age
Service Transmission Fluid / Service immediately — already past the 60,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded transmission fluid destroys clutch packs and solenoids. CVT transmissions are especially sensitive — neglected fluid can result in a $4,000–$8,000 replacement.
EST. OVERDUEHighCoolant Flush
Service interval: 5 yr · Vehicle age: 9 yr · Past due by age
Service Coolant Flush immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 5 yr interval
Degraded coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks aluminum engine components. Can cause head gasket failure and water pump corrosion.
EST. OVERDUEModerateSpark Plugs (iridium/platinum)
Service interval: 8 yr · Vehicle age: 9 yr · Past due by age
Service Spark Plugs (iridium/platinum) immediately — already past the 100,000 mi / 8 yr interval
Worn spark plugs cause misfires that can foul and crack catalytic converters. A $150 tune-up can prevent a $1,200 catalytic converter replacement.
DUE SOONModerateFuel Injectors
Service interval: 120,000 mi · Est. ~108,000 mi (no odometer on record)
Schedule Fuel Injectors service before 120,000 mi
Dirty or failing injectors cause rough idle, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions. Cleaning costs $100–$200; replacement $800–$1,600.
CASCADECriticalFailure Cascade
Cascade already triggered — downstream damage likely in progress
Have a specialist inspect all systems connected to the failed component before purchase
One failed component has created stress on connected systems. Repair costs compound quickly — a $500 fix can become $3,000+ if cascade damage is ignored.

My airbag light came on. My vehicle has less than 100K miles on it. I took it to the Chevy Dealership that I purchased it from. The dealership indicated that the passenger side rail air bag is the issue. Apparently, that airbag is no longer available. If I wanted to repair it, they can't, because there is no airbag. As long as the airbag light remains on, NONE of my airbags will deploy. My car is now a useless lemon. I don't feel comfortable driving it in the condition it's in, but I have to commute to work.

My 2017 Chevy Cruze had the throttle body replaced by STG Auto Group in Montclair, CA. A few months after the repair, my car began shaking violently and then shut off in the middle of the street while I was driving on 11/17/2025 This created a serious safety hazard for me and other drivers. When I took the vehicle to a local auto zone once the vehicle turned on , they told me the throttle body “needs cleaning,” but a new throttle body should not get dirty within a few months. This suggests improper installation or a defective part. The problem returned even though the part was recently replaced. I immediately called the dealership who fixed it and the manager stated I’d have to wait to the following week for another inspection and that I can not be squeezed in . The vehicle is still unsafe to drive because it shakes and can stall unexpectedly. I am concerned because this issue has happened more than once and could have caused an accident. Apparently there is a TSB from GM regarding the end for updated/replacement of parts concerning the hydraulic piping, slave cylinder and accumulator. My clutch became spongy then stuck on the floor. This happened unexpectedly (reservoir full) while driving and almost caused an accident. Apparently GM doesn't take enough accountability to update the failure before or after failure. Reporting this hoping it will eventually force a recall!

ODI #11690501ENGINE

My turbocharger is failing. My car has 83,000 miles, but had to get a completely new engine at 37,000 miles. So the engine is less than 50,000 miles old. My check engine light has turned on and it’s is the turbo charger. General Motors has a Special Coverage Adjustment N232395330 that covers models with the same engine as the Chevy Cruze. However, because the model is not listed they are refusing coverage under this adjustment. The adjustment specifically covers the turbocharger, a component or the engine. But since my model is not listed it is not covered despite having the same engine. My turbocharger began failing while I was driving on the grapevine in California. Luckily I was able to make it to my destination but had it failed over the grapevine that would have put me and my passengers in an unsafe situation. It is unacceptable that an engine with less than 50,000 miles on it which has been maintained with frequent oil changes be having this issue yet not be covered under an SCA that acknowledges the issue just doesn’t list the model.

The 3rd brake light is known to leak on Chevy cars, which I found out when searching up the issues, which allows water inside trunk without your knowledge and does water damage to the battery and other electrical components that are located in the trunk that controls the dashboard, a/c, radio, power steering and probably even more. Safety risk: makes your dashboard stop working along with the power steering, while driving. There is another vehicle at the same dealer as mine right now with water in the trunk, it’s an impala. When you search up on the internet about dashboard not working along with radio and a/c there are quite a few different people pointing to the leaking 3rd brake light and water in the trunk damaging the electrical components in the trunk. The vehicle is at a Chevrolet dealer right now being fixed. No warning messages before it happened. I have only owned the car for 1 year bought it used June 2024. The bill I included is so far what they are saying needs to be fixed but I’m sure more to come as they get some components working.

The catalytic converter on my Chevy Cruze has failed several times over the course of almost 2 (two) years and required replacement. The most recent replacement was 3/17/2025. The vehicle had diagnostics performed each time. It is my understanding that the life of a catalytic converter is 10 years or more. So being replaced several times seems excessive in such a short amount of time. The safety of myself and others were at risk because issues with a catalytic converter can lead to engine problems, which could indirectly lead to an accident or injury. I received warning messages each time and took the vehicle in for diagnostics and repair. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives.

We believe the auto stop is malfunctioning. When stopping at a light the car will go into auto stop and then die. It won't restart without getting out of the car, alarming and locking it, then unlock and get back in. This is our second 2017 cruze hatchback, both purchased brand new. The first one was doing the same thing less than 2 months after we bought it. Dealership couldn't figure it out, we caused enough of a scene for them to put us in another brand new one. Obviously, a car randomly dying on the road is a safety issue. We did have our first one checked out by the dealership, Autonation Chevrolet Gulf Freeway in Houston, and they couldn't find anything wrong and couldn't recreate the issue, which is why they got us in a second one. This one didn't start doing this until a couple months ago, at at 8 years old. No warranty, and we haven't had it checked out by anyone yet. It's worth mentioning that we also had this issue with our 2017 Traverse, 3 years in. Same dealership, couldn't recreate the issue, we ended up trading it in. No lights or warning lamps of any kind appeared.

The shutoff feature that shuts the engine? down while at a full stop/red light, is defective. I was stopped at a red-light and the engine shutdown as a gas-saver feature and stalled and I had to put my car in park and restart it in mid traffic. I was rear-ended by the person behind me, who was a hit n run. This is an unsafe feature that has been put in many Chevrolet vehicles. I called the Chevrolet # and she told me, I had to pay for the $250 diagnostic test at a Chevy dealership and I told her, Chevrolet should be responsible for the failure to restart my engine car as it is a an unsafe feature installed by them and that that they should turn off that feature for free as I was hit from behind when the vehicle did not restart. I want Chevrolet to pay to have this unsafe feature removed without charging my for an expensive diagnostic system test. I as a consumer, should have that choice! I want that flawed feature turned off in my vehicle. IT'S UNSAFE.

Slave cylinder failure. At approximately 125,000 miles, the slave cylinder began to fail. Clutch pedal would only come back up about half way, and would need to be pulled the rest of the way up. Associated problem is difficulty putting car into gear. Took vehicle to dealership for other warranty work and asked to investigate. Dealership ignored request. Took back separate time for other faulty parts and was ignored again. Other part failure was turbo waste gate. Internal spring failure caused turbo waste gate to become stuck open, not allowing boost to build. Caused check engine light and severe lack of power. Replaced part with aftermarket, and problem disappeared. Investigation into cause revealed low quality spring that broke internally. Dealership visits within extended warranty period were ignored/ told could not replicate issue, despite suggestions of potential causes, including waste gate failure.

My 2017 Chevy Cruze engine failed with only 38,000 miles on it (Case [XXX]). After it happened, I read that this is a known problem (see link below). I hope that GM will consider a recall on this item in order to save others from this experience. When I contacted GM and Chevy about this in late August, I was hoping that GM would take full responsibility for what clearly appears to be a manufacturing defect in Cylinder 1. I was deeply disappointed that it took GM so long to respond to this request, and that the compensation was no more than the cost assistance that I was offered at the dealership originally. I will never buy a GM vehicle again, and will be sure to tell my friends and family about my dissatisfaction with owning a 2017 Chevy Cruze. When the clutch release cylinder leaks, you also lose brake fluid, and when the leak is bad enough, you lose your clutch and brakes.

The piston in my front cylinder cracked while traveling causing safety issues including, inconsistent speeds, poor acceleration, engine cutting off while driving. Safety is compromised due to traffic behind me going speed limit or worse. First appeared 2 months ago. Mechanic could not detect anything on diagnostics. Then we took it to the Chevy dealer where purchased and after 5 days could not diagnose. They took it out 3x but could not duplicate symptoms. No lights flash, no warnings. Based off my mechanic's assessment and that of a Chevrolet dealership, one of the cylinders in my Chevy Cruze is no longer firing. The dealership believes at least one of the pistons needs to be replaced. The car is available for inspection. The car is unreliable to drive, as I drove up a freeway incline it slowed to a dangerously low speed for freeway driving. The dealership has confirmed they believe it is an issue with the piston but will not confirm without charging $2800 to dismantle the car and are not able to guarantee they will be able to fix the issue. Diagnostics were run on the car at Putnam Chevrolet in Burlingame CA. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to a major issue with the cars functionality. The issue first appeared June 15, 2023 without any warning. The engine light came on and the car was not functioning properly, plus a notification to "service Stabilitrek". I have found mention of the same problem on consumer forums. Cracked pistons are a KNOWN issue on this make and model but there are no recalls and the car is just outside of the warranty.

This put my safety in jeopardy as I could've have gotten hurt on the road and other safety if I got hit. Luckily, neither happened. Chevy Cruze 2017 manual transmission clutch pedal stuck to the floor while driving preventing changing of gears. Was able to lift pedal with toe, but was still not fully able to then depress clutch to get the car in gear. Pumping the pedal helped loosen and eventually allowed it to work normally temporarily. For the past year, occasionally the clutch would be slow to return after depressing, but did not cause any safety issue and since it could not be reproduced for dealer, no repairs were made. Having an experience of not being unable to change gears in traffic caused a significant safety issue, which will need to be remedied. First week of August 2022 the car finally gave out after diagnosis of faulty knock sensor. Was displaying knock sensor code intermittently and finally stayed on. Anyway first week of august it stalled completely at a stop sign and would not crank back up. I finally started checking relays and found the engine functions relay faulty by accident. My Chevy Cruze LT Hatchback has an acceleration issue. I’ve read blogs where people complain of the same problem. There is a delay from the time you press the acceleration peddle to when the vehicle actually responds. This is dangerous because in the time it takes for the car to respond to the acceleration, oncoming traffic could collide with me causing an accident. I’ve had more than a few ‘near misses’ because of this issues. Something needs to be done about this before someone gets killed over it.

I should have filed a complaint here after the catastrophic failure. The next time I may not be so lucky and it could cause loss of life. I was driving at approx. 65 MPH on the frwy when bang! An explosion under my hood that caused my car to jump over a lane, I slammed on the breaks, swerved but couldn't push the brake pedal down anymore. It felt hard and would barely move. i had no way to slowdown or stop! And traffic infront of me was slowing fast. I put all my weight on that pedal even tried pumping it, but it would only move alittle. Luckily the car in front sped up just enough for me to swerve onto the shoulder. As I slowed i could depress pedal alittle if I stood up on it out of my seat but stopping distance was like 15ft while maybe going 15 mph. This all happened in a matter of minutes i still dont know how I was able to avoid an accident. The engine sounded really rough. So I called the dealership they said to bring the car in. I had already spoke. With them that week due to traction control system and transmission causing instability and brake issues. I was mortified when I found out what happened I had cracked 2 pistons & the force was so strong it blew thru the membrane that seperates the break system, got oil in my break lines! This is a new car! Dealership said it was a known issue & GM determinedtitle was a design flaw. I had 2 pistons replaced and my break system flushed my car has never been the same. There's always something little and intermitten still with the transmission & Now the engine jumps while idling and stopped in drive it jumps so hard the car jumps fwd, feels like ill hit whats in front of me. I lost significant value at only 26,290 miles, i cant afford to trade it in on disability, covid turned into long haul covid, no affordable extended warranty. I have no piece of mind in a car I dont feel safe in. What happens when the pistons fail they didnt fix. How many injuries or lives must be sacrificed before they do something.

It may be a completely other situation but 1 month previous ~ 1000 miles previous, that same BOGUS stabletrac msg was displayed and the car went on limp mode. It is at risk of falling off into the road, makes the car less visible to drivers while braking, and obscures my view out of the back window, especially when it is raining, as I can no longer use the wiper. It is unable to be reattached without replacing the entire rear spoiler (approximately $1,000 repair according to multiple dealerships I have contacted, with photographs), and it is a manufacturer defect, not caused by outside force. Later assessment by trained mechanics determined the root cause was due to insufficient structural capability of engine pistons to withstand brief periods of LSPI. As evidenced by attachment 18-NA-171 and PIP5490, the vehicle manufacturer (General Motors) is aware of the insufficient design of the pistons, has re-designed them to withstand LSPI, however has not made an effort to notify me or replace the existing part to prevent damage to the vehicle powertrain and ABS. While this particular instance of piston cracking due to LSPI has only had a financial impact on myself, loss of ABS functionality and potential engine seizure at highway speeds have the potential to produce dangerous, if not fatal, conditions to other drivers with similar hardware.

VEHICLES COMES WITH A ENGINE STOP ON/OFF THAT CAN'T BE TURNED OFF. WHAT THIS DOES IS THAT IT 'TURNS OFF' THE ENGINE WHEN IDLING TO SAVE GAS. WHAT HAPPENS IS THAT THIS ENGAGES EVEN BEFORE BRAKE PRESSURE HITS 100%. SO WHEN IN AN UPHILL OR DOWNHILL AND COMING TO A STOP THE CAR TENDS TO SHUT DOWN WHEN IT REACHES LOW SPEEDS. HOWEVER, WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE CAR STARTS ROLLING AND YOU CAN'T STEER CORRECTLY BECAUSE POWER STEERING IS TURNED OFF. THIS CREATES A SAFETY HAZARD BECAUSE IT ENGAGES BEFORE PRESSURE IS 100% CAUSING THE CAR TO SHUT DOWN EARLY AND YOU START ROLLING UNEXPECTEDLY WITHOUT ANY POWER STEERING. VEHICLE WAS APPROACHING A RED LIGHT IN A SLIGHT UPHILL. CAR ROLLED FROM :34-:50 SECONDS BACKWARD. I RE GAINED CONTROL OF NY CAR ONCE I LET GO COMPLETELY OFF MY BRAKE(THIS CAUSES THE AUTO STOP ON/OFF TO DISENGAGE)

THEN THE BRAKES WOULD NOT WORK PROPERLY. THE CAR SAID SERVICE BRAKE ASSIST, I HAD TO STEP VERY HARD ON THE BRAKE PEDAL REPEATEDLY TO TRY TO STOP THE CAR FROM HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF US. ONCE WE STOPPED AGAIN THE CAR SEEMED LIKE IT HAD DIED. I TRIED TO ACCELERATE BY STEPPING FULLY ON THE PEDAL AND NOTHING. THEN I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TRIED TO TURN OFF THE CAR BUT THAT DID NOT WORK EITHER. IT WAS NOT UNTIL THE 3RD TIME OF TRYING TO TURN THE CAR OFF THAT THE VEHICLE ACTUALLY TURNED OFF. WE WERE ABLE TO TURN THE CAR BACK ON AND AT FIRST NOTHING HAPPENED, BUT THEN THE CAR STARTED TO WORK AGAIN. WE FOUND ON GOOGLE THAT I SHOULD NOT LET THE CAR GO BACK INTO AUTO-STOP IN THE HOPE THAT THIS WOULD NOT OCCUR AGAIN SINCE WE WERE GETTING ON INTERSTATE 95.

THE FIRST INCIDENT OF THE CLUTCH PEDAL STAYING ON THE FLOOR WAS RIGHT AFTER START UP ON A WARM DAY. DEPRESSED THE PEDAL AND IT DID NOT RETURN UNTIL PHYSICALLY MANIPULATING IT FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. THE PROBLEM SEEMED TO GO AWAY FOR ABOUT A WEEK OR SO. THE SECOND TIME WAS WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGH SPEED ROAD (50MPH) WITH TRAFFIC LIGHTS. THANKFULLY THIS HAPPENED WHILE DOWNSHIFTING TO STOP AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, HOWEVER, IT TOOK A MINUTE OR TWO TO GET THE PEDAL TO RETURN TO SOME DEGREE AND GET SAFELY OFF THE ROAD ALL THE WHILE TRAFFIC WAS PASSING AT HIGHER SPEEDS. IF THIS HAPPENED ON THE FREEWAY, IT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS CRASH DUE TO THE LACK OF SHIFTING. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM, IT IS NOT THE FIRST THAT HAS BEEN REPORTED AND THERE IS A TSB REGARDING THIS ISSUE, PIP5558C. HOWEVER, THE TSB ONLY CALLS FOR 2 PARTS (FOR MY MODEL CAR- DIESEL) TO BE REPLACED, CLUTCH PIPE AND ELBOW, WHILE ALL OF THE CASES SEEM TO HAVE MORE PARTS NEEDING REPLACEMENT AFTER THE FIRST ROUND OF "FIXES", INCLUDING THE MASTER AND SLAVE CLUTCH CYLINDERS. THIS SHOULD BE UPGRADED TO A SAFETY RECALL DUE TO THE UNPREDICTABLE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM, THE FACT THAT YOU LOSE THE ABILITY TO SAFELY CONTROL THE SPEED OF THE CAR THROUGH SHIFTING AND THE FACT THAT SIMILAR PROBLEMS ARE BEING RECALLED IN EUROPE FOR THE INTERNATIONAL VERSION OF THE CAR. I STILL HAVE YET TO GET MY CAR BACK (WAITING FOR PARTS FOR A MONTH NOW) TO FIND OUT IF THIS PROBLEM IS FIXED OR IF IT WILL NEED MORE REPAIRS.

THE DEALER COMPLETED THE REPAIRS ON 7/23/2019 AFTER TWO ATTEMPTS AND MANY WEEKS OF WAITING FOR PARTS. THE PARTS THAT WERE REPLACE WERE THE CLUTCH PIPE, ELBOW, MASTER CYLINDER, AND SLAVE CYLINDER. WHILE THE CAR IS BRANDED A CHEVROLET, IT IS MATERIALLY IDENTICAL TO VEHICLES SOLD IN EUROPE AS EITHER AN OPEL ASTRA OR VAUXHALL ASTRA. THE ENGINE WAS MADE IN HUNGARY, AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS MADE IN AUSTRIA. SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THIS YEAR, VAUXHALL HAS HAD A RECALL TO REPLACE THESE SAME PARTS AND SOME OF THE HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM PARTS FOR THE SAME ENGINE/TRANSMISSION COMBINATION AS IN MY 2017 CRUZE DIESEL WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION. IT IS MY OPINION THAT OTHER CARS WITH THIS SAME ENGINE/TRANSMISSION WILL LIKELY HAVE THE SAME SOFT CLUTCH PEDAL WHICH COULD LEAD TO AN INABILITY TO CONTROL THE TRANSMISSION AND/OR BRAKES. I BELIEVE GM SHOULD BE COMPELLED TO RECALL THESE VEHICLES AND FIX THEM BEFORE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT OCCURS.

SAFETY ISSUE IS FUEL ECONOMY UNDER-PERFORMANCE. FUEL ECONOMY IS OVERALL 9%+,- 1% LESS THAN EPA ESTIMATES UNDER EACH RESPECTIVE DRIVING CONDITION, ACROSS ALL SEASONS, AND NOW OVER 22250 MILES DRIVEN. EXPERIENCE WITH FIVE PRIOR AND CURRENTLY OWNED GM AUTOMOBILES (2005, 2007, 2011, 2012, AND 2018 MODELS) IS THAT WE HAVE ALWAYS HAD FUEL ECONOMY PERFORMANCE MET OR EXCEED THE EPA RATINGS, CITY/COMBINED/HIGHWAY. BOTH OPERATORS USE CRUISE CONTROL UNDER MOST DRIVING CONDITIONS AT SPEED OF 25 MPH OR GREATER; AND HAVE BEEN DOING SO SINCE INITIAL PURCHASE OF THE 2017 CRUZE HATCHBACK PREMIER RS IN OCTOBER 2017. TIRES ARE KEPT INFLATED TO 35LB N2 COLD; TOP-TIER RATED GASOLINE IS USED FOR ALMOST ALL REFUELINGS. MULTIPLE SITE VISIT/REQUESTS TO TWO CHEVROLET DEALERS AND CONSUMER COMPLAINTS DIRECTLY TO CHEVROLET EXECUTIVE CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE TO ADDRESS THE UNDERPERFORMANCE HAVE RESULTED IN "NO ISSUE TO RESOLVE"/NO FAULTS FOUND BY DIAGNOSTIC TESTS (FUEL STOICHIOMETRY "NORMAL"), CHEVROLET CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE VERBAL COMMUNICATION WITH INTERMEDIATE RESPONSES BY PHONE OR EMAIL, REFUSING TO PROVIDE "CLOSURE" RESPONSES IN WRITING, THOUGH REQUESTED. THE NEXT MORNING EN ROUTE TO THE DEALER, THE WIPERS RETURNED TO THE OFF POSITION UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE TO DRIVE. THE WIPERS STUCK AGAIN SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE.

RIGHT AFTER I PURCHASED THE 2017 CHEVY CRUZE I NOTICED A SMALL DELAY WITH THE WIPERS WHEN THEY WERE IN DOWNWARD MOTION BUT REALLY DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING OF IT. HOWEVER, A MONTH LATER I'M DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY IN THE RAIN THE WIPERS FROZE IN THE UPWARD POSITION! PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE I'VE HAD. (NOTE: IT TAKES VERY LITTLE RAIN TO COMPLETELY BLOCK VISIBILITY WHEN DRIVING) THANKFULLY I WAS ABLE TO GET INTO THE RIGHT HAND LANE AND WAS ABLE TO GET US OFF THE ROAD. THE WIPERS REMAINED IN THE UPWARD POSITION FOR 15-20 MINUTES BEFORE FINALLY REACTING THE WIPER LEVER.

WHEN THIS PROBLEM FIRST OCCURED IN MY CAR, NONE OF THE GAUGES ON THE CAR WORKED. ALL WERE INACTIVE INCLUDING SPEEDOMETER, GAS METER, CAR TEMP, AND RPM METER. THE AIR CONDITIONING WAS NOT WORKING AND THE RADIO WAS NOT WORKING EITHER. AT THIS TIME THE CAR WAS RUNNING, AND I WAS ON A HIGHWAY. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP IMMEDIATELY TO HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED. A FEW DAYS LATER MY CAR WAS RETURNED TO ME AND LESS THAN 100 MILES LATER THE CAR MALFUNCTIONED AGAIN IN THE SAME MANNER. MY CAR WAS THEN HELD ON TO FOR A WEEK AND A HALF WHERE THE DEALERSHIP WAS ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE MALFUNCTION AND REPLACE A FEW MODULES. THEY CLAIMED TO HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM, AND FOUR DAYS LATER THE CAR MALFUNCTIONED AGAIN, THIS TIME WAS DIFFERENT BECAUSE THE ACTUAL ENGINE TURNED COMPLETELY OFF AND THEN BACK ON AGAIN. THIS WAS SURPRISING TO ME AND LUCKILY I WAS PARKED WHEN THIS OCCURRED. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR FOR REPAIRS AND I HAVE STILL NOT RECEIVED A SOLUTION. THIS HAS ALSO BECOME A SAFETY HAZARD TO MYSELF AND DRIVERS AROUND ME.

ALMOST 6 MONTHS TO THE DAY OF PURCHASE, I WAS PLANNING A TRIP THAT REQUIRED 3.5 HOURS OF HIGHWAY DRIVING. THE DAY BEFORE MY TRIP, I HAD AN UNFAMILIAR ALERT, SO I TOOK IT TO AUTONATION UNDER WARRANTY. THEY FOUND THE CAR HAD BEEN IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT WHERE THE FRONT END HAD BEEN "STRAIGHTENED" AND ADVISED ME NOT TO RISK DRIVING IT ON THE TRIP. A MAJOR ACCIDENT WHERE THE FRONT END HAD TO BE STRAIGHTENED WAS NOT DISCLOSED TO ME. AUTONATION TOLD ME TO GO TO OFFLEASEONLY, BECAUSE THE WARRANTY WAS VOIDED BY REPAIRS NOT BEING DONE BY A CHEVY DEALERSHIP. AUTONATION SHOWED ME, WHILE ON THE LIFT, THE EVIDENCE. I CONTACTED OFFLEASE AND THEY DID NOT EVEN LOOK AT MY VEHICLE AND TOLD ME THAT THEY COULD NOT HELP ME. I SENT PHOTOS AND THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT HELP AND SAID I SHOULD CONTACT CHEVY CORPORATE OFFICES AND FIGHT FOR THE WARRANTY. I RETURNED TO AUTONATION AND PAID A DIAGNOSTIC FEE OF $175.73 AND GOT SPECIFICS ON COSTS WHICH I SHARED WITH OFFLEASE--$2500 FOR MECHANICAL REPAIRS AND STRUCTURAL REPAIRS WOULD START AT $1500 WITH NO GUARANTEE THE FRONT END WOULD BE AS SAFE AND THAT CORRECTING THE SHODDY WORK ON THE FRAME COULD DEGRADE ITS STRUCTURE AND STABILITY. AUTONATION SAID THAT THEY ARE NOTORIOUS FOR SELLING CARS LIKE THIS. OFFLEASE REPRESENTATIVES DECLINED TO WORK WITH ME. I PROVIDED WITH THE RECOMMENDATION BY AUTONATION THAT OFFLEASE SHOULD CLAIM A LOSS THROUGH THEIR INSURANCE AND REPLACE MY CAR. OFFLEASE DECLINED AND REFERRED ME TO PEPBOYS FOR REPAIR, BUT WHEN ASKED THE ESTIMATED COST, THEY NEVER RESPONDED. I ONLY DRIVE IN TOWN. I HAVE HAD TO RENT/BORROW A CAR FOR TRAVEL TO EXTENDED DISTANCES TO AVOID THE FEAR. OFFLEASE CLAIMS TO INSPECT VEHICLES WELL & CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS; BUT THEY HAVE SHOWN NO INTEREST IN MY SAFETY.

THIS VEHICLE WAS IN AN ACCIDENT AT NIGHT DUE TO THE "AUTOMATIC" LIGHTING SYSTEM EITHER WAS NON OPERATIONS, NOT FOCUSED IN THE CORRECT DIRECTION OR NOT BRIGHT ENOUGH. THE CRUZE VEHICLE WAS DRIVING SOUTH BOUND TO A LIGHTED INTERSECTION FROM A STOP SIGN A BLOCK AWAY. THE NORTH BOUND CAR WAS AT A STOP WAITING FOR THE LIGHT TO TURN GREEN. UPON TURNING GREEN AND AFTER VIEWING THE OPPOSITE LANE TO YIELD, THE NORTH BOUND CAR PROCEEDED TO TURN LEFT AND DID NOT SEE THE CRUZE UNTIL IT WAS ALREADY IN A TURN AND LATER STATED THAT THE CRUZE CAME OUT OF NO WHERE. THE CRUZE WAS TOTALED. THE WITNESS TO THE ACCIDENT, ANOTHER NORTHBOUND CAR, STATED THAT THE NORTH BOUND CAR WAS GOING EXTREMELY SLOW AS THE LIGHT JUST TURNED GREEN. IT IS NOTED THAT THE 2016 VEHICLES WERE RECALLED FOR THE EXACT SAME ISSUE.

WHILE DRIVING A VERY DISTRACTING 'WARNING MESSAGE' WILL APPEAR ON THE INFORMATION SCREEN WHICH TAKES THE DRIVERS FOCUS AWAY FROM THE ROAD FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD. THIS IS ESPECIALLY DISTRACTING AT NIGHT SINCE THE MESSAGE WILL LIGHT UP THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE TO THE POINT OF AFFECTING VISIBILITY. THIS MESSAGE MUST BE ACKNOWLEDGED TO REMOVE IT FROM THE INFORMATION SCREEN. PHOTOGRAPH IS ATTACHED WHICH ILLUSTRATES VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION AT THE TIME THE MESSAGE WAS GENERATED DISTRACTING THE DRIVER SEVERELY. THE MESSAGE SAYS, "TAKING YOUR EYES OFF THE ROAD TOO LONG TOO OFTEN COULD CAUSE A CRASH RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH TO YOU OR OTHERS. FOCUS YOUR ATTENTION ON DRIVING". THIS IS QUITE IRONIC AS IT IS AN EXTREME DISTRACTION THAT TAKES TIME TO READ. THIS IS A RANDOM OCCURRENCE THAT MAY HAPPEN SEVERAL TIMES IN A DAY OR ONCE IN A WEEK.

THE HEADLIGHTS ARE VERY DIM ON THIS VEHICLE. THIS IS A BRAND NEW CAR BUT IT IS THE LS MODEL WHICH DOES NOT HAVE SEPARATE DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS. INSTEAD OF DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS, THE HEADLIGHTS ARE ON ANYTIME THE IGNITION KEY IS IN THE RUN POSITION. WHETHER OR NOT THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH IS SET TO "AUTO" OR THE HEADLIGHTS ARE TURNED ON MANUALLY MAKES NO DIFFERENCE IN HEADLIGHT INTENSITY. I'VE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY CLAIM THAT THEY CANNOT FIND THE PROBLEM. BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. WHEN I DRIVE ON HE FREEWAY AT NIGHT I CAN TELL THAT THE HEADLIGHTS ON NEIGHBORING CARS ARE BRIGHTER. I AM OFTEN FORCED TO USE THE HIGH BEAMS WHEN THERE ARE NO OTHER SOURCES OF ILLUMINATION. I WONDER IF THE LIGHTING "COMPUTER" IS SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE POWER OF THE HEADLIGHTS. I'VE NOTICED THAT CHEVY CRUZES WITH DISCRETE DT RUNNING LAMPS (LEDS) STILL UTILIZE THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS (PROJECTOR BEAM) BUT IN A DIMMED MODE. MY VEHICLE HAS OLD FASHIONED HALOGEN HEADLIGHTS. I NEED TO DETERMINE IF THE LIGHTING COMPUTER IS DIMMING MY HEADLIGHTS BECAUSE IT CAN'T DIFFERENTIATE NIGHT FROM DAY. THIS PROBLEM PERSISTS AT ALL TIMES. IT COULD BE THAT THIS VEHICLE MODEL HAS POOR HEADLIGHTS. I'VE OWNED AND DRIVEN MANY CARS OVER A LONG STRETCH OF TIME. BUT RARELY HAVE I DRIVEN A VEHICLE THAT HAD SUCH POOR HEADLIGHTS.

I DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING OF IT UNTIL THE FOLLOWING DAY WHEN I WAS DRIVING IN TO WORK AND THE PULLING CONTINUED, WITH MY STEERING WHEEL SLIGHTLY WOBBLING. I LEFT WORK FOR AN APPOINTMENT A FEW HOURS LATER AND AS I WAS DRIVING MY STEERING WHEEL STARTED SHAKING MORE VIOLENTLY. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OFF AT THE FIRST AVAILABLE EXIT, WHICH WAS LUCKILY THE ONE FOR MY FATHER'S WORK. I DROVE TO HIS PLACE OF EMPLOYEMENT WHERE HE CAME OUT TO CHECK TO SEE IF MY WHEELS/TIRES WERE OK. HE FOUND THAT ALL LUG NUTS ON ALL FOUR TIRES HADN'T BEEN PROPERLY TIGHTENED AND WERE ONLY "FINGER TIGHTENED." ONCE HE WAS SURE TO PROPERLY TIGHTEN ALL LUG NUTS I LEFT AND RETURNED TO THE HIGHWAY TO GET TO MY APPOINTMENT. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS NO LONGER SHAKING, AND WHILE IT CONTINUED TO PULL SLIGHTLY, IT WAS NOWHERE AS SEVERE AS IT WAS PRIOR TO THE LUG NUTS BEING TIGHTENED. MAJORITY OF DRIVING WAS HIGHWAY.

I PULLED INTO MY CAR PORT AND NOTICED THAT MY CAR HAD ALREADY SHUT OFF, NOT KNOWING THAT IT WAS STILL IN DRIVE. I LEFT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, TOOK OFF MY SEAT BELT AND OPENED MY DOOR TO EXIT. THE CAR STARTED AND LURCHED FORWARD AS I WAS PARTIALLY OUT OF THE VEHICLE. MY WIFE WAS STILL IN THE VEHICLE AND MANAGED TO GET IT INTO PARK BEFORE I WAS RUN OVER AS IT WOULD HAVE ALSO HIT MY MOTORCYCLE THAT WAS PARKED IN FRONT OF IT. I FIND THAT THE CAR HAS A "AUTO STOP" WHICH TURNS OFF THE ENGINE WHILE YOU ARE STOPPED AND IN GEAR, THEN THE ENGINE STARTS AUTOMATICALLY WHEN YOU REMOVE YOUR FOOT FROM THE BRAKE. ANY OTHER TIME YOUR CAR WILL NOT START WHILE IN GEAR BUT WITH THIS IT STARTS IF YOU WANT IT TO OR NOT, EVEN WHEN IN GEAR GETTING OUT OF THE CAR CAUSING INJURY OR DEATH. I MYSELF SUFFERED SOME BRUISING AND MINOR CUTS.

ALMOST NEW VEHICLE (304 MI WHEN RENTED FROM HERTZ IN SAN ANTONIO, TX, 751 WHEN RETURNED). ON FREEWAY NEAR LIMIT SPEED (70 AND 75 MPH), COASTING DECELERATION (TO 60-65?) FOR SLOW TRAFFIC AHEAD, TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFTED ON ITS OWN, CAUSING RAPID DECELERATION (EST. 10 MPH MORE), ACCELERATOR NOT EFFECTIVE FOR ~2 SEC. OCCURRED TWICE IN ABOUT 1 HR. FIRST EVENT -- HEAVY TRAFFIC, TRAFFIC AHEAD SLOWING FOR TRANSITION RAMP CURVE, SLIGHT UPHILL CURVE. IF THROTTLE WAS APPLIED, IT WAS VERY LIGHT TO STOP DECELERATION AND MATCH SPEED OF TRAFFIC AHEAD. SLOWING ON DOWNSHIFT WAS ENOUGH TO CAUSE VEHICLE BEHIND ME TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION (BRAKE AND QUICKLY CHANGE LANES). SECOND OCCURRENCE, MINIMAL TRAFFIC, LEVEL, STRAIGHT 2-LANE FREEWAY, COASTING TO WAIT FOR TRUCK PASSING ANOTHER TRUCK. WHEN LANE CLEARED, APPLIED SIGNIFICANT THROTTLE. I THINK ALMOST IMMEDIATE DECELERATION. DECELERATION AND LAG TIME TO ACCELERATION SEEMED SIMILAR TO FIRST ASSURANCE. I WAS TOO DISTRACTED BY THE EVENTS TO LOOK AT TACHOMETER, BUT I SUSPECT ENGINE AUTOSTOP ENGAGED DURING THE COASTING AND DOWNSHIFT WAS RELATED TO RESTART OF ENGINE. NOT SURE BUT THINK I HIT CANCEL ON SPEED CONTROL RATHER THAN BRAKE FOR BOTH EVENTS. BEST GUESS, EITHER BAD SOFTWARE (NOT ACCOUNTING FOR THE SPEED OF VEHICLE AND ALLOWING ENGINE SHUTDOWN), OR HARDWARE FAULT RELATED TO REPORTING VEHICLE SPEED. I EXPECT MULTIPLE SIMILAR TIMES I COASTED TO SLOW, BUT UNCERTAIN IF DURATION OF COASTING WAS THE SAME, SO WOULD WONDER IF IT COULD BE AN INTERMITTENT HARDWARE FAULT, OR COMBINATION OF FACTORS I'M NOT THINKING ABOUT.

Chart Analysis

The blue line shows 199 total NHTSA complaints filed over 11 years, with the worst year being 2020 (34 complaints, including 1 crash report).

The amber reliability line is declining — recent years score around 22/100, lower than earlier in the vehicle's life. This pattern indicates issues are accumulating over time rather than being resolved, which is a concern for used buyers.

The recall (red dashed line) followed the first complaints by 2 years — a typical response window; neither unusually fast nor a pattern of denial.

Red dots on the amber line flag 5 years (2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2025) where complaints included crash events — these are the highest-severity incidents in the dataset.
