Recent Owner Complaints

Direct reports filed with NHTSA by BMW X5 owners — 20222026 model years.

Steering04/20/2026

Reduced steering effort error message. No accident or injuries. Seems to be a known issue on BMWs. Likely covered under warranty but I feel should be reported

Electrical System04/18/2026

With 1900 miles since purchase, car became undriveable. Displayed warnings included “high voltage failure” and “drivetrain malfunction”. Car had to be towed to dealer.

Visibility/Wiper04/17/2026

Incident Description: While driving with my two [XXX] children and husband under normal conditions, the panoramic sunroof glass on my 2025 BMW X5 xDrive50e suddenly and unexpectedly shattered without warning. At the time of the incident: There were no weather events (no hail, debris, or extreme conditions) I did not observe any object striking the vehicle There was no prior damage to the sunroof The glass failure was abrupt and loud, sounding like an explosion, consistent with a sudden break rather than gradual damage. There were no warnings or symptoms or sounds of impact prior to the explosion. I immediately documented the damage with photographs taken at the scene, prior to any inspection or handling. Safety Concern: This incident raises serious safety concerns: The sudden shattering of the sunroof could startle or distract the driver, increasing the risk of an accident Broken glass could fall into the vehicle cabin, posing a risk of injury to occupants The unexpected nature of the failure creates a hazard at highway speeds This type of failure appears consistent with reports of spontaneous tempered glass breakage, sometimes referred to as “exploding sunroofs.” Manufacturer Response: The vehicle was inspected by the dealership, BMW of San Rafael, and escalated to BMW of North America. BMW determined that the damage was caused by “impact” and denied warranty coverage. However: No clear point of impact (such as a chip, crater, or penetration point) has been identified No foreign object residue or evidence of impact has been provided The determination appears to rely on a visual interpretation of crack patterns, rather than confirmed physical evidence Based on my observations, the fracture pattern appears irregular and distributed, including along the edges, which may be consistent with stress-related or spontaneous failure. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Structure04/17/2026

On April 15, 2026, while driving on the highway with my family in my 2025 BMW X5 (purchased new on September 25, 2025 from Principal BMW of Corpus Christi for approximately $75,000), the panoramic sunroof suddenly and violently exploded. The explosion sounded like a gunshot. Shards of glass sprayed throughout the cabin and got into our eyes. I was barely able to maintain control of the vehicle and prevent a serious accident that could have resulted in hospitalization or worse. Photos of the sunroof taken immediately after the explosion are attached to this email. These images clearly show the large shattered section, missing glass fragments, and debris inside the sunshade right after the failure. You can also see from the picture submitted from the front, the glass is pushed out from the car. This was an extremely dangerous safety failure that put my entire family at immediate risk. Because of this incident, I no longer feel safe driving the vehicle. I am now constantly on high alert, worried that the sunroof could explode again at any moment. This traumatizing experience has completely ruined my ability to enjoy what was supposed to be a luxury vehicle. Instead of the premium driving experience I paid for, I am left with fear and anxiety every time I get behind the wheel. This is not an isolated or “unheard of” incident. BMW has faced multiple reports and a class action lawsuit regarding exploding sunroofs dating back to at least 2017. Despite this known issue, when I contacted Principal BMW of Corpus Christi, the dealership claimed the problem was unheard of and showed absolutely no sense of urgency or willingness to address it properly. The service person took a quick look and told me that this incident has happened two other times within the last two months. Since the incident happened on 4/15/26 @ 6:35PM I was unable to speak to a service member.Service person told me to bring my car in for further evaluation on 4/20/26 since he’s only one working.

Fuel/Propulsion System04/04/2026

The electric A/C compressor on my 2022 BMW X5 xDrive45e (VIN [XXX] ) failed internally at approximately 59,000 miles, causing metal debris to circulate throughout the refrigerant system. The failed compressor and contaminated components are at BMW of Sterling (Sterling, VA) and available for inspection. This is a safety concern because the A/C refrigerant circuit provides thermal management for the high-voltage hybrid battery. BMW of Sterling's service advisor confirmed in writing that the A/C system is "a critical component of your vehicle's HV system," that there is no independent backup cooling system, and that the failure "can cause potential high voltage battery failures." Without active cooling, the HV battery is at risk of overheating, which could result in a thermal event. The failure was diagnosed and confirmed by BMW of Sterling. They categorized the repair as "EHV: FULLY ELECTRIC OR HYBRID VEHICLE DRIVETRAIN DIAGNOSTICS" with the complaint "HIGH VOLTAGE SYSTEM ERROR." The repair estimate is $11,356.59 and requires replacement of the compressor, condenser, all expansion valves, and a double system flush. BMW Service Information Bulletin SI B64 09 21 documents this exact failure pattern for the G05 X5 xDrive45e, and BMW created a dedicated repair kit (part 64 50 5 A5B 590) for it. This is my second major HV component failure. A battery cell replacement was performed under warranty in 2025. Both failures were confirmed by the dealership to be component defects unrelated to owner use. Prior to complete failure, a fan noise was present in the front driver's area for a period of time before it stopped, consistent with the compressor degrading before failing entirely. A high voltage system error was displayed. BMW NA (case #XXX) has declined warranty coverage despite the vehicle being within the 8-year/80,000-mile HV battery warranty. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Service Brakes /Forward Collision Avoidance04/02/2026

I was driving my 2022 BMW X5 on the highway at approximately 78 mph when the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly applied the brakes without any obstruction or vehicle in front of me. A warning appeared instructing me to release the brakes while driving. This created a dangerous situation and could have caused a rear-end collision. The vehicle has approximately 34,000 miles. This appears to be a malfunction of the automatic emergency braking system. This happened on 2 seperate occasions.

Unknown Or Other04/02/2026

My 2024 BMW X5 experienced a complete megatronics failure at 54,500 miles. The megatronics unit controls critical vehicle functions including transmission and engine management. This failure caused the vehicle to become completely inoperable — posing a significant safety risk. This failure occurred just 4,500 miles beyond the factory warranty on a barely 2 year old vehicle. A 2024 model year vehicle should not experience such a critical safety-related failure at this mileage. BMW Corporate has been unresponsive for 7 days despite opening case number XXX and promising a 3-5 business day response. I am requesting NHTSA investigate whether this is a widespread defect that may affect other 2024 BMW X5 owners. Incident Description: "Vehicle suddenly entered limp mode while driving at highway speed on XXX in [XXX] . This caused an unexpected and dangerous loss of power while surrounded by highway traffic creating a significant safety hazard. Vehicle was unable to maintain highway speeds and had to be carefully maneuvered to the shoulder of the road. Vehicle was subsequently driven to BMW Dealership in [XXX] where it was diagnosed with a complete megatronics failure." INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Electrical System03/31/2026

Since buying the car new we have had a constant problem of the "emergency call system malfunction" on the dashboard. We've been to the dealer several times for this and each time they say they've fixed it. Last time they told us they had replaced the TCU module, but in the last month the warning has re-appeared. It seems to have affected the GPS now. While driving on the freeway the map was showing us a mile away on surface streets, giving us guidance such as "stop at the stop sign ahead and turn left".

Tires03/25/2026

The front Continental PremiumContact 6 tires, size 275/35ZR22, DOT [XXX] , developed abnormal and premature tread/shoulder failure. The condition included splitting, tearing, separation along the shoulder area, and exposed internal cords. I first raised concerns about the tire condition at about 20,000 miles. An alignment was performed at 20,142 miles, but the condition later worsened. One of the front tires deteriorated while the vehicle was being driven, creating a serious safety risk. The condition was documented with photographs and dashcam evidence. The vehicle was not safely drivable on the affected tire. The full set was later replaced based on BMW’s recommendation, at a cost of $2,358.75. A warranty/defect claim was submitted through the BMW / Dealer Tire / Continental process, but I did not receive a clear manufacturer-level inspection explanation or meaningful response. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Power Train03/23/2026

Front Differential failed at 51,000 miles

Visibility/Wiper03/23/2026

I have owned my BMW for only 19 months and in that short period of time, I have had to replace my windhsield (with OEM BMW Glass) 2x due to small road debris impacts (normal gravel/sand) becoming major fractures in less than a day. I have been driving for 40 years and only replaced 3 windshields in my life--2 of them in the past 10 months in this brand new BMW. Same roads and weather I have driven on for the past 24 years, in the south [XXX] ) so no unusual road gravel of weather conditions. I have to believe that these windshields are somehow more fragile than they should be. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Power Train03/17/2026

Drivetrain malfunction reoccurring 2x in 45 days. First error message the dealer charged me 600 to fix. Bringing car in second time now. Unsafe to drive due to power cutoff. This is a PHEV. Car is under the original mfr warranty and less than 3 years old.
