Driving the car from Dallas to Santa Fe with our 20lb Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the dog put his paw on the Park button (just in front of the console cover and behind the shifter knob) and the car immediately went into a hard braking action. I almost lost control of the car when this happened; and at 75mph!!
I experienced multiple unintended gear changes while stopped in traffic in a 2026 BMW X2 xDrive28i (~11,800 miles, rental vehicle, prior usage unknown). The vehicle uses a small electronic toggle gear selector located immediately adjacent to the cupholders. Incident 1: While stopped with my foot on the brake, the engine shut off due to auto start/stop. When I released the brake, the engine restarted but the vehicle did not move forward and instead revved slightly. I immediately pulled the selector back and the vehicle resumed normal forward movement. I did not intentionally shift gears and believe the vehicle had unintentionally shifted into Neutral. Incident 2: While stopped with my foot on the brake, I reached for a drink in the cupholder. During this normal action, the gear selector was likely contacted unintentionally. The vehicle shifted into Reverse without my intent, confirmed by the backup camera activating. The vehicle did not move because I remained on the brake and recognized the issue immediately. Afterward, I tested this interaction in a controlled environment in my driveway. While stationary with my foot on the brake, repeatedly reaching for a cup caused the vehicle to shift into Neutral or Reverse multiple times without intentional input or clear tactile feedback. The selector’s location next to the cupholder and its sensitivity allow incidental contact during normal use. As a left-handed driver reaching across the console (with a wristwatch and jacket), contact may occur without awareness. This creates risk of unintended gear selection, unexpected movement, or failure to move when expected.
This vehicle was sold to me as new without disclosing the open recall. I purchased the vehicle on 08.01.2024. The recall was issued on 02.12.2024, five months earlier. This recall affects the electronic breaking system(s). There is no current fix/solution to the recall at this time. The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Act prohibits dealerships from selling new vehicles with active recalls.
While driving on the interstate, the drivetrain malfunction warning appeared causing the car to become "limp." This limp mode caused a sudden inability to accelerate in a lane requiring mobility to avoid collision with merging right lane traffic. If this car had not already been in the far right lane, it would have potentially cause a serious hazard in a high traffic area. Prior to this drivetrain warning, the vehicle had been serviced at BMW twice in the past 6 months. December of 2024 the battery was replaced. All 4 run flat tires were purchased new in April. By the end of April this drivetrain malfunction occurred requiring a tow back to BMW. Initially they diagnosed the battery as bad, though I informed them that shouldn't be happening since the battery was purchased just a few months prior. After more testing, I was informed that the battery is fine but the throttle body is draining it. This is a part that should last throughout the life of the engine. I asked if there was any way this could have been diagnosed during previous service, as this is a serious failure and had I not told them I already bought a new battery I would have had another incorrect diagnosis and further engine damage.
